Traitor. A word that had been reverberating around the dark haired teenager’s mind ever since she had left her homeland. She felt as though it was being whispered from every corner, almost as though the word was written on her forehead. A ridiculous notion of course but one that she struggled to get out of her mind. There was no way back now and Mischa would never again stand in that cold and horrible country of her birth. It had taken her so long to see it for what it truly was but there were some things that just couldn’t fail to open one's eyes. Her family had been in raptures since the victory over Bellum but their only daughter had not shared an iota of their joy. She’d seen the exact scenes as they had but her reaction had been one of sickening repulsion. To see such a loss of life had shaken her to the core and that was the moment when she knew that what she’d been taught about all her life had been complete and utter horse shit. Her family were maniacs, believing in a regime that would only bring death and destruction to every corner of the world. Pergrande was not fighting to protect their own land, they were simply a war machine which desired to take everyone else’s. It was not a cause that she could believe in and that was when she’d vanished without a trace and on a path that she’d never imagined.

A long and winding path that had led her to the very doors of the Rune Knights themselves. She was about to perform an act that her family would no doubt consider to be a grave act of betrayal but surprisingly enough, that barely even registered with Mscha now. She’d had plenty of time to consider her options during her journey and more than enough to bolster and harden her resolve. The young woman had been training for years in order to fight for a cause that she believed in although she’d never thought that it would end up being the exact opposite one of which she’d expected it to be. She was going to throw it all in the face of Pergrande and do her damnedest to set things right, no matter what it took. Her homeland was a cancer, one that needed to be treated with aggression and forcefulness.

Without a moment’s hesitation, the young woman would push open the large door and enter the building, her eyes naturally glancing around as she headed towards the reception desk. Mischa attempted to force down any nerves she had but now that she was actually here, they were beginning to fester and not just because of the chance she’d be turned down either. She knew that there was bound to be a great deal of suspicion regarding her attempting to join and honestly, the teenager had no idea as to what the reaction would be to her request. She could end up in a prison cell for all she knew but that was a possibility that the brown eyed girl had considered. Better to rot in a prison cell then fight for a cause that she no longer believed in.

Once she reached the receptionist, the woman would look up at her. “May I help you?”

Mischa took a deep breath and answered honestly, knowing that this could all go south quite quickly. “My name is Mischa Amasova and I’d like to join the Rune Knights.” Her accent was a dead giveaway as to where she came from.

The receptionist paused for a moment before replying, her tone a touch more sharp. “Wait here a moment.”

The ball was well and truly out of her court now and with a nod, Mischa would stand aside to allow the receptionist to speak to those behind her.

Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
    “Ma’am, are you free?”

Serilda didn’t glance up from the paperwork on her desk even as the intercom interrupted her train of thought. “I’m going over a report. Is there a problem?”

“Valorie asked us to contact you. There’s a woman at the front desk that’s inquiring about joining the Rune Knights. A… Pergranti woman.”

Blinking her eyes, the field marshal lifted her head to stare at the little speaker. “You’re sure?”

“Her accent is unmistakable. She says her name is Mischa Amasova. I know you don’t normally get involved with recruitment efforts, but…”

“No, you did the right thing. Please have her escorted to one of the interviewing rooms. I’ll get Mythal and be right down.”

    “Understood, ma’am.”

Serilda was already closing her files before the call ended. With the press of a button, she reached out to Mythal’s extension, waiting for the beep that indicated he’d picked up. “Hey, I need you down at the foyer to help me with interviewing a new recruit. Possible Pergranti defector. Can you spare the time?” Presuming he could make himself available, Serilda would finish locking all of her sensitive reports in a drawer so she could make her way downstairs.

Meanwhile, back in the foyer, Mischa would be led to a small room that was furnished with a table and chairs on either side of it. They would offer her a clipboard with a couple forms, and a writing instrument to fill it out with. She would find a station against the wall that would dispense drinking water into a throw away cup, should she find herself thirsty. The woman would only be alone for a few minutes before there was a knock at the door.

The noblewoman entered with a small but kind smile, stepping inside and leaving room for Mythal to come in behind her. “Thank you for your patience. It was Mischa, correct?” Serilda was dressed in a basic Rune Knight uniform, the black outfit crisp and perfectly tailored. The only indication of her station on the outfit would be the laurel leafed pin on her collar. Approaching the table, she offered her hand to shake. “My name is Serilda, the field marshal for the Rune Knights. This is Director Mythal.” Stepping aside, Serilda pulled back one of the chairs and sat down in it.

“We understand that you’ve come today looking to join up with the Knights. Normally Mythal and I don’t handle the interviews for new recruits, but at the risk of sounding… indelicate… we were notified by the front desk staff that you might be from Pergrande. Naturally, with the current state of the world, it calls for a little extra precaution. I hope you understand.” Serilda did her best to convey that, while they certainly needed to do their part to vet the woman, they weren’t there to treat her with hostility or make assumptions about her. If this was some kind of attempt at infiltration, they would find out soon enough. Otherwise, Serilda had no intention of treating her as some kind of enemy of the state until given reason to do so.

Mythal was just getting into the swing of his training when his receiver beeped. The tome he had taken from Izrael was hovering in the air in front of him, brimming with dark energy as the Darkness Slayer studied the incantations within. He was just finishing with a single word when the call came, the Director of the Rune Knights glancing over in the direction of the receiver. With a sigh, he stepped back from the book and it instinctively closed, floating down to rest on the top of his desk. He pressed the button to receive and his fiance’s voice came through the speaker immediately. She needed help in the foyer with a new recruit. Before he could say anything on the matter, she clarified that it seemed the person was a Pergranti defector. His eyes narrowed slightly. “Yeah… I’ll meet ya down there,” he confirmed before pulling his finger off the button.

Mythal had been involved in a lot of the recruitment lately. Between Shane returning to the bullshit that was Morgaine’s recruitment, he thought he’d seen it all. But apparently he had thought like an idiot. He sealed the tome shut with a wave of his hand and then melted it into the shadow of the desk, causing it to disappear completely. Making sure the rest of his office was secured, he headed down to the foyer to meet Serilda. Once they came together, it was off to the interview room that Valorie had brought the woman to. Serilda entered first, followed by Mythal, who closed the door behind him. Unlike Serilda, Mythal was not dressed in his Rune Knight uniform. He was in his usual garb; a tailored vest covering a white-gray dress shirt that had been rolled up to his biceps and a pair of black slacks.

Serilda introduced herself and Mythal, the latter giving Mischa a quick upwards nod as he leaned against the wall behind Serilda, tucking his arms together over his chest. His fiance sat down and outlined the situation. No doubt Mischa would have expected this; one doesn’t wander deep into the territory of their home country’s enemy without having thought about such things, or so he hoped. Serilda knew how to approach the topic with care and empathy, which is why she normally handled most of the talks. “For the sake of bein’ open and honest, it’d be in your best interest to tell the truth. If ya lie, I’ll know. We ain’t here to persecute you or anythin’. But we gotta be careful, ya know?” Mythal spoke up. In most instances, he kept his ability to detect lies a secret, so as to glean the fallacies and honesty that came from those he spoke to.

This was an unusual case. And no doubt they would be asking a lot of Mischa if she was truly, earnestly here to help. It was that reason alone that Mythal decided to be just as open and honest as they were expecting from her.

Following the Rune Knight who’d come to lead her away without a moment’s pause, Mischa couldn’t help but take another glance at her surroundings. It was a beautiful building and the impression it gave off couldn’t have been any different to those of her homeland. There was a cold and almost robotic vibe there and it was one of many things that the teenager was more than happy to see the back of. One wrong word could end up bringing a ton of trouble and she’d ended up in a spot of bother more than once for that very reason although when she thought about it now, she realised that it’d been down to one simple fact. The dark haired woman had never truly believed in the words of her nation and it had simply been her own way of trying to rebel. Well, now she could rebel in the most effective way possible by leaving all that crap behind.

Once she’d been left in what appeared to be an interview room of some kind, Mischa wasted no time in filling out the forms that she’d been handed, her right hand shooting back and forth across the pages. It was frankly a perfect way to help ease the nerves that were continuing to build up inside her and the fact that she hadn’t been thrown straight into a cell had done the world of her good for her. That alone gave her hope that perhaps there was a chance for her to start again and to use her talents for what they had meant to be used for. To protect those in need, not as a means to harm them. For a brief moment, an image of herself on the fields of war filled her mind, one where she’d completely given in to her own rage and anger, unleashing hell on those around her. It lasted no longer than that but enough for a shiver to travel down her spine. She knew all too well that if she’d remained in Pergrande, that could well have been her fate and what a sickening one it was.

Her thoughts were soon enough interrupted as the door opened again and a pair of Rune Knights entered, a woman followed by a man. Mischa was uncertain as to what was to happen next but much to her delight, the woman soon spoke in a kind tone, which did wonders for the defectors nerves. Her shoulders relaxed slightly and she felt rather more at ease. “Yes Ma'am, Mischa Amasova.” She replied in a respectful tone and as the woman approached her with an extended hand, introducing herself and the Director, Mischa outstretched her own and gladly shook the Field Marshal’s. “A pleasure to meet you both.” She briefly pondered about whether she should be so casual, given her situation but honesty was the way to go and her words were genuine.

Taking a seat opposite the Field Marshal, Mischa listened intently as both Rune Knights spoke. There was no hint of surprise in her body language as they spoke about their suspicions regarding her homeland. She’d made no effort to hide the fact and although it’d been suggested to her to perhaps alter her voice through magical means, the black haired woman had been adamant in not following that advice.

“I understand completely and it’s true that I come from Pergrande.” She answered honestly. “My family are as loyal to the flag as you could and every one of them would be willing to put their life on the line to aid the cause. Most of them are in the forces and I have no doubt that as soon as they realise that I’m gone, they’ll be hell bent on smashing my face in if they get the chance. I have no place among them anymore, I left it all behind.”

Mischa was pleasant and respectful enough, shaking Serilda’s hand and greeting them both. It was certainly a far more casual interaction than most would probably expect, but she saw no reason to crucify the woman without provocation. Mythal spoke up, telling the potential recruit outright that honesty was the best policy as he would be able to sense any lies from her, taking his own steps to assure her that this was all just a formality to cover their bases. As long as she told the truth, everything would be fine.

The woman stated that she understood, admitting to her nationality. Serilda listened attentively as Mischa explained that she came from a family of extremely devout Pergranti citizens that would happily give up their lives in support of their nation. Most of them were members of Pergrande’s army, and she suspected that her defection was going to be ill received – to put it mildly. She claimed to have left all of them, and her country, behind.

Serilda didn’t bother looking over toward Mythal for any kind of confirmation. She knew that he would speak up if anything were a falsehood. Instead, she pushed the interview along. “That can’t have been an easy decision,” was her gentle response, the weight of Mischa’s confession not lost on her. Clearly something had happened to spur her toward this decision, but whether the woman saw eye to eye with her family or not, it was still her family. Being enemies with those who raised you and were raised alongside you wasn’t an easy situation to compartmentalize, nor the myriad of emotions that surely went along with it.

“I guess I should start with the obvious question: Why? Pergrande is very well known for its… nationalism. I’m sure you’re giving up much more than just your family. I imagine the country will revoke your citizenship, for one thing, as well as putting you on a number of wanted lists. If they ever find out that you came to us, it’s almost certain that they will condemn you with even greater vigor. I wouldn’t normally ask about something that I’m sure is deeply personal, but we have to understand the journey that brought you here if we’re going to entertain what is, at its heart, a defection.”

It was the question that she’d been expecting and yet despite knowing that, Mischa still found herself needing some time to put the answer into words. There were many moments during her life where she’d found herself asking why her family believed so strongly in the mantra of her nation. There was no room for debate with her parents nor her brothers and any attempt at doing so had usually ended up being rather brief. For years, the young woman had simply thought that there was something wrong with her, that she was just stupid for not being able to fully believe as her family did. She’d asked herself why multiple times and the answer never came. Still, despite her doubts, she’d signed up for the forces like her brothers and gone through the rigorous testing and training, in order to hopefully find what she’d thought had been missing.

The truth, however, came to her far more recently and as that memory flashed across her mind, she finally replied. “It was my family's reaction to the latest battle that caused me to realise that what I’d been training for wasn’t the defence of my country but simply the destruction of others. I’d always believed that it was defence that we were being trained for rather than blind war but I suppose that I’d just been naive all along. My own parents were jumping around for joy when the pictures of the battlefield were shown to the nation. It sickened me to my core and was the straw that broke the camel's back. It wasn’t just them though, it was the country as a whole. Everywhere I looked, men and women revelled in the destruction of so many innocent lives. I suppose I’ve never fully understood the hatred that Pergrande has for the magical world, as I’ve honestly not felt that same sense of loathing. I was always the one in my family to ask why we believed as we did.”

She paused briefly, her sunny disposition darkening just a touch. “After that, I couldn’t stomach even remaining in Pergrande, let alone fighting for them. My naive way of thinking was shattered and I felt nothing but guilt for even being attached to the country. I wanted out and that was what finally led me to leaving the country for good. I suppose that it was always going to be the result, now that I think back to the arguments that I used to have with my family. I’ll never fight for them again and will do everything in my power to defend the innocent from them. For now their target may be Bellum but sooner or later, they’ll want the rest of Earthland too. That’s what I’ve learned about them and I refuse to let it happen, even if it means that I lose my life. Better to die for a good cause then live fighting for a bad one.”

Briefly, Mischa glanced at both Serilda and Mythal, before finishing her answer. “I’ll follow whatever ground rules you lay down and will do whatever is necessary to prove my loyalty to the Rune Knights and Fiore as a whole.”

After Mythal had said his piece, he fell quiet. Mischa stated that she understood where they were coming from and opened up a bit about her family, the dedicated Pergranti group that they were. Unsurprisingly, they were as fired up about the war as the rest of the Empire was. Worse was that they were all involved in the forces to a point and once they understood where Mischa had run off to, there wouldn’t even be a pause in their composure before labeling her traitor and enemy. It was heavy to hear, turning one’s back on their own flesh and blood for what some would consider the highest of treasons. Serilda voiced her sympathies for her choice and started in on the only question that mattered; why had she abandoned her family and run off to Fiore? It seemed to go against any kind of survival instinct that most people would have and yet here she was, defecting.

It took her a moment to consider her words fully, or perhaps she was just still emotionally invested in the choice, as she had every right to be. When she finally did speak, she remarked on the latest battle and how it had opened her eyes to her nation’s goal; destruction, not protection. She had been training with the armed forces under the assumption that they would hold the line against any kind of Bellian assault. Instead, she could only watch on in horror as her family, her fellow comrades, all celebrated at the, no doubt, horrific images shown from the battlefield. It made her sick to her stomach and as she watched on, she began to understand the deep rooted hatred for magic and those that wield it that was embedded in the country as a whole. Mischa never understood it, even before the war, and admitted that she was always asking why they were so hardlined against magic.

Once the realization had dawned upon her, she knew it was impossible for her to remain. She would never be able to shake the guilt of what her country had done, nor hide how she truly felt from her fellow Pengranti nationalists, let alone her own family. It made her painfully aware of what her fate may have been the entire time, given how she had felt beneath the surface. With the pain and guilt had come purpose and she now wanted to do everything she could to protect the world from Pergrande’s march of destruction. As she saw it, Bellum was only the first stop on a world domination tour, her belief backed up by her own upbringing and education and she had every intention of stopping it. She was even willing to stake her life on it, if it came to that.

Finally she looked up and stated that she would follow whatever restrictions or rules they put in place, so long as she got the chance to prove her word. Mythal considered for a long moment, crimson orbs steadily focused on her before he finally spoke. “Words and feelin’s like that… I don’t think I even needed to check ya to see if you were lyin’,” he said softly before taking a deep breath in. “For the sake of bein’ open and honest, the Rune Knights are doin’ everythin’ they can to end this war sooner rather than later. We want to stop as much bloodshed as we can. Unfortunately that’s gonna bring us into conflict but our primary goal is protectin’ lives, not takin’ ‘em.”

He glanced at Serilda briefly before he continued. “I think, for the sake of protectin’ ya, it’s best we put in some ‘restrictions’, mostly blocks on certain information avenues, nothin’ too important really. Not because we don’t trust ya but there are a lot of people here that lost friends in Joya and in Bellum already. They may not take it too kindly for someone from Pergrande bein’ in the Knights. But that’ll go away, once they see ya are earnest in yer goal. But best to be safe for them and for you. Just… let us know if anyone gets too in yer face. I’m sure you can handle yourself but I’d rather avoid a situation if we can.”

“Other than that, I think yer fine. And if I’m bein’ honest, I’m impressed you took such a stance. It ain’t easy to turn away from all ya ever known, even if you know it ain’t right. I can only name a handful of people that’d do the same. So good on ya.”
