I've been out there and seen the things she's made

Mythal didn’t feel right about keeping Luceam here. He hated to think it and didn’t dare speak it any more than he had but he was concerned about her adverse reactions to the planet. Adding in the addition of the fairy princess who didn’t offer much help but chose, instead, to make snide, unneeded comments. It seemed like a mixing pot of bad ingredients that was going to result in a massive, devastating culmination. He wasn’t going to force the girl back to Earth but he was going to keep an eye on her, probably throughout the night. The trio of operating team members, Serilda, Akeya and himself, agreed that setting out recording devices was the best option for their first night. The dragoness stated that in addition she would be outside the ship as well to keep a solid watch on the movements and environment of the nocturnal cycle. It was a good idea; her senses would serve better respect to the meticulous and possible dangerous conditions they could experience rather than bland technology. “If you’re good by yerself, I’ll make sure everythin’ inside stays calm,” he said, unafraid to throw a glance in Luna’s direction. The best option was to have eyes both on the outside elements and the ones inside as well.

They had a little time to prepare but not as much as they had expected. Soon the sun’s rays were creeping away and the onset of darkness rode into take its place. The scientists were brought inside along with Serilda, Mythal and Luna and they went about their predetermined business. The full night hadn’t even truly fallen before several of the scientists had begun voicing their displeasure over Luna’s continued presence. Her words hadn’t fallen on deaf ears and a group of the crew approached Mythal as he was standing outside the room, clearly on a mission.

“You said you can extract her from the planet without injuring her, correct?” The elected leader said as they stopped before the Darkness King.

“Yeah…” Mythal responded slowly, turning his head to look at the group.

“In all honesty, her remaining on this mission seems more of a hindrance than a benefit. We had been told she was an expert in nature and remedies but her actions today speak of a woman unhinged,” the scientist continued, analytically listing reasons for their trek here.

“I’ll admit her actions were a bit… crazed, but I’m not going to throw her back to Earthland willy nilly. I’d need to talk to Serilda at the very least – I’d rather not bother Akeya while she’s keeping an eye outside.” Not even proper nightfall and already having to deal with issues.

“Do what you must. But know that our continued research could be affected by her. Words are words but clearly this world is affecting her in a negative fashion. We worry that action will soon come before speech and then all of our lives could be in danger.” With that, the scientist nodded at his fellow compatriots and the group turned and headed back to their duties.

“Shoulda seen this comin’,” Mythal said with a sigh. He stood up and made his way to the lab that Serilda had made her home. She was planning on watching some of the nocturnal action for awhile before she got some rest. Mythal would probably tag in when she started to lose steam, adding an extra set of eyes to the activities from a different viewpoint. He walked in as the rest of the scientists were bustling around her, going about their own business while also occasionally glancing at the screen. “Hey,” he said as he came up beside her, leaning against the closest table. “So I just had a parlay with a few of the scientists here. Apparently they’re not comfortable with Luna remainin’ here. They’re concerned about her actions getting’ more hectic and her endangerin’ the rest of us. I hate to admit it but frankly, they gotta point. I like the girl but her actions and words today were worryin’. And if this planet really feels as wrong as she said it is, it could affect her worse. I’d rather not fight one of our own on a planet that we don’t know all about. If she decides to use her plant magic, it could cause a ripple effect.” He sighed softly. “What do you think?”

Post by Akeya 3rd July 2019, 6:06 pm

The light was dying and the dark was growing. Although even during the day this planet had significantly less light than Earthland. Luceam (or was it her companion? Or both?) had been correct in their assessment that this world was one where the element of dark was more dominant than the element of light. Earthland had been fairly balanced, although from Akeya's senses the night back home had always had its fair share of light as well due to the moon and the many, many stars. Here it was the other way around: the nights were truly dark, and while there was a sun during the day its light could not banish all the shadows. For most people from their homeworld that would make this a bad place, but for herself (and Mythal she was pretty sure) it was quite comfortable.

Holding up one invisible claw she let the darkness flow through it. She may have both light and dark inside of her, but she'd spent so long being a creature of dark that she still felt a comfort from this world at night, where there was no question whether the light or the dark was in charge. All the scientists had long since gone inside, their artificial observation technology installed so they could collect data from the safety of the shuttle. Nothing they'd seen so far in this world suggested that the shuttle was in any danger.

And if there was something which could harm the shuttle Akeya would take care of it. If there was something out there which could force her to retreat she would almost certainly have felt its power already even from a fair distance, so either it didn't exist, was too far away to be a threat or was hidden somewhere where it most likely wouldn't come out just to bother these aliens from another planet.

Of course Seridia and Mythal were inside as well. Although both of them had more raw power than Akeya they'd apparently deemed her more suitable for this position, or at least suitable enough. Whether it was because they thought she'd do the best job or because she'd volunteered first and they didn't think all three of them needed to be outside was a secondary concern. For now it meant that Akeya had the outside world for herself while they took care of any issues that might arise inside the shuttle. Like with Luceam: she'd come along because she was good with nature, but it looked like this planet, Constantine, had turned out to be even more alien than anticipated. So alien that someone attuned with nature couldn't bear it. An unfortunate turn of events, but there wasn't much they could do about that. And it brought the threat of Luceam herself becoming a threat to the expedition. Akeya was no naive optimist: she'd seen how the pink-haired fairy and her summoned friend had been behaving. There was definitely a non-zero chance that they'd become a serious threat.

It was a good thing the other two capable mages were inside to deal with that if it were to go wrong. Luceam could wreak a lot of havoc if not contained.

Akeya herself cracked her knuckles as she could see many tiny figures fly upwards in the distance, quickly forming a dark blanket covering an already dark sky. Standing there on top of the shuttle she watched as more and more of the little batlike creatures poured forth from their underground homes, more and more and yet more, more than you could have thought the entire planet to hold. Enough that the blanket of flittering bodies quickly expanded to cover the entire sky, and the dragoness was sure that they covered the sky everywhere else as well. Something you'd never see on Earthland: a natural tiny predator, so numerous that they could envelop the entire world with sheer numbers. Narrowing her eyes she watched as they whirled around high above, a chaotic mess which somehow was even more messy than a sea of writhing worms. Those weren't nearly as fast as these things turned out to be. They weren't so fast that a mage like Akeya couldn't outspeed them, but they were definitely showing off that kind of movement speed that you needed to be airborne for if you didn't want to rely on trickery.

As she tried to keep track of individual bodies Akeya considered whether there was anything else to be done here. The batlike creatures appeared content to stay up in the air for the most part: they only occasionally flew down in swarms, gathering around whatever prey hadn't managed to make itself scarce. Their hunts were brief and to the point, critters quickly torn apart and devoured by a multitude of tiny fanged mouths. A whole flock had approached the shuttle at first, but they'd quickly gone back up once they'd fgured out that this strange thing wasn't edible in the slightest. The dragoness had been completely ignored, her form fully blended into the world so there was not even a physical presence for them to track.

Should she just stand here and watch these things fly about for the remainder of the night? It definitely was one option, but it felt like she wouldn't be making use of this opportunity... The scientists wanted samples, any form of data they could get their hands on. It was a desire that Akeya could easily sympathize with. She too had a great thirst for knowledge and understanding. In which case rather than just standing here... maybe she should help collect some data on how these air piranhas dealt with a hostile intruder.

Calling her shadow blade to her hand she twirled it around several times before suddenly lashing out with it, the string that connected it to her clawed hand rapidly extending as the dark dagger shot upwards into the sky until it buried itself into one of those many, many bats. Forcing the string to shorten Akeya quickly reeled her prey in, but she also saw that her dagger was being followed by a good portion of the dark sky carpet. They still couldn't find her, but at the very least they were reacting to one of their own suddenly being struck down and pulled down to earth.

With a single swipe Akeya released the dead bat, letting it fall to the ground as she grabbed her dagger with her actual hand rather than just letting it dangle from the black string. Spreading her wings she jumped, turning into a streak of darkness that shot away into the air before she allowed herself to materialize even as she began to repeatedly attack with her dagger. Like a whip with a very sharp tip the weapon flew forth ripping through several of the dark bats at a time as they all began to home in on Akeya. Her response, of course, was to begin flying around, outspeeding them even as she kept lashing out again and again and again. However speed could only bring her so far when the threat was closing in from every single angle, more and more bats descending from their skywards patrol to instead attack this intruding dark dragon, who so boldly was attacking them as if their numbers meant nothing to her.

    Seri Banner
Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
Xiuhcoatl and Gren had wandered over to her at some point, the two wolves eager for attention. They had been extremely well behaved during the entire trip, and though they were curious about the world outside they had not left the ship yet. Serilda and Mythal had agreed that it would be best to keep them inside the first day or two until they knew it was safe to let them out. Since they had been a bit neglected that first day, Serilda made sure they were let into the lab with her so she could give them some affection while she observed the cameras with the scientists.

She had finished her tea and was running a hand gently through each of their coats when Mythal came in. Looking up at him from where she sat, she listened carefully as Mythal explained that some of the other scientists had expressed their concern to him about Luna’s further involvement in the mission. He asked for her opinion and she sighed softly. “No, they’re right. Everyone knows it. Hell, I’m pretty sure Luna knows it. It was a mistake for her to come, though I know her heart was in the right place. She doesn’t like to back down once she’s committed to something, no matter how difficult it is for her, and I respect that about her greatly. But… In this instance, I don’t think it’s healthy for anyone that she remain here, least of all herself.”

Serilda excused herself to the scientist she had been sitting beside, promising she’d be back in a couple minutes. The man nodded idly, not really listening to her as his eyes were glued to the screens. She stood and walked with Mythal toward Luna’s room, the hounds following beside their masters. Given Luna’s frantic state, she didn’t want the other slayer to have to confront the fairy alone about this. Luna would probably take it easiest coming from Serilda anyway.  “Will you be okay doing this? You said earlier that it might drain all your power…” He could probably just go outside afterward and soak up some of the darkness to recharge, but she still didn’t want him to have to overexert himself so soon into the heart of the mission.

Ultimately, it was decided this would be the best course of action. Serilda normally wouldn’t have confirmed the decision without hearing from Akeya too, but the dragoness was doing something much more important and Serilda was fairly positive that whether or not Luna stayed would be of no consequence to the twilight mage. She was an extremely pragmatic woman that would probably just prefer to have potential hazards out of the way, anyhow.

Before long, Luna had been safely transported back to Earthland. Serilda made sure Mythal went straight to bed so he could start to recover his strength, and returned to the lab with Xiuhcoatl still at her side. By the time she returned, several of the technicians were gathered around the monitors and chatting excitedly to one another. “What’s going on?” she asked as she approached.

“Akeya is fighting the bats,” one of them told her without looking up. “At first we thought she was being attacked, but they don’t entirely seem to be aware that she’s there. They only started acting up after a few of them had been killed.”

Serilda nodded. “That makes sense. She can manipulate her body to blend in with light and darkness to the point of becoming intangible, so there really wouldn’t be much for them to sense. Do we know why she started fighting them?”

He shook his head. “No, it seemed unprompted. She does seem to be pretty focused on reaching the objectives of our mission here though, so maybe she’s trying to learn more about them by engaging them?”

“Possibly.” It was really anyone’s guess at that point. Serilda could go outside and ask her, but if the other woman was in the middle of trying to do something she didn’t really want to interrupt her. Akeya was obviously holding her own, which was of no surprise. If the fight became too much she’d likely come back inside.

“At least we’ll have a lot of creatures to dissect in the morning. That will help tremendously.” The man paused with a frown. “Then again, maybe not…”

Serilda could tell by his wary expression that he was thinking of Luna. “Don’t worry. Mythal used some of his magic to return Luna back to Earthland. She will not be here for the remainder of the mission.” All the scientists present looked greatly relieved by that, and the excitement once again returned to their faces as they realized they could look forward to doing their jobs unhindered. “In fact, Akeya’s efforts may be able to help you sooner rather than later.”

The Voidwalker reached out with her magic and took hold of several of the diseased creatures that Akeya had already slain. About of a dozen or so of the corpses lifted gently off the ground and were pulled through into the ship easily as Serilda shifted the spaces between the molecules of their body to let them pass the thick walls without resistance. Within a matter of seconds, the scientists had a small pile of freshly killed alien creatures to examine in as much depth as they desired.

It was like watching children in a candy store as they eagerly got their gear together and split off into smaller teams to start doing their research. Serilda stayed with them for several hours, observing the scientists at their work as well as continuing to monitor Akeya just to make sure nothing else happened that the dragoness would need assistance with. Eventually, sleep called to her. Giving one last final check on everyone to make sure everything was in order, she bid them all goodnight and returned to her room to sleep next to Mythal until morning.

Post by Mythal Ragnos 12th August 2019, 7:30 pm

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

Mythal had silently agreed with Serilda; Akeya probably wouldn’t truly care one way or another about Luna’s fate, so long as it didn’t impede her mission. There was very little point to take the matter up with her, as her job on the outside was arguably more important than this anyways. Bothering her with the politics of the ship’s demeanor could honestly hinder more than help. So he chose rather to take it straight to Serilda, if only to have a sounding board. The two of them had a fairly similar way of thinking when it came to things like this. And as he stood there and explained the situation to her, he could see her gears already working in tandem with his own.

The truth of the matter was Luna had come to be a help and, instead, the world had warped her. Her connections to the planet, both Earthland and this one, had driven her emotions into a solid and confusing craze. It didn’t help that her spirit seemed to lack any sense of properness or charm that could offer any sort of endearment to their opinions. Princess of whatever she was, her words had only made matters worse in the long run. That and Luna’s hardly veiled threatening words. She was a danger to herself and to the rest of the crew and it was better they send her home now rather than have to deal with her physically later. Who knows what this planet would do to her magic, should she try to access it.

He nodded along with Serilda. “Then I guess it’s decided.” With that set, the Field Marshall removed herself from the room to accompany him to Luna’s room. It was both a strategic move as well as an empathic one. On the one hand, having the two of them there would prevent her trying to harm him while he summoned up the strength to cast the spell. And if she felt he was acting as a threat, he had little doubt she would do so. But there was also the fact that Serilda was the one that Luna was closest her. They had worked together on a job before, had formed a bond that had lasted until this moment. He didn’t suspect it was going to shatter at all after this but there would probably be some… tension. Despite her mannerisms here, he felt that Luna was someone who took great pride in being able to hold herself up to standards. This would be a blow.

The Voidwalker turned to him, asking if casting the spell will cause any problems. “Probably just tired. In time, bein’ able to create these portals will be easy. But I haven’t quite figured out all the mechanics to it yet, so it takes a lot of effort and stress to pry it open. From what I’ve seen, it seems that the remnants of the dark magic that live in Kingdom Darkness are part of our world. Pro’lly because they formed when everythin’ formed. They aren’t anymore toxic than anythin’ else in the world, but they are still there. After our little door hoppin’ adventure and my absorbin’ some of the magic there, I can sense ‘em. As I practiced, I found I could even manipulate ‘em. Surprisingly they’re all connected too; kinda like strings in a web that expands the cosmos. So with a bit of a push, I can open doorways between ‘em. It’ll just be a matter of makin’ a big enough one for ‘er.” It sounded complicated and truthfully it was, to a point. Sensing the spots was one thing but being able to interlock them and open pathways was something else. After months of training he could do that fairly easily but expanding the size of one portal meant he had to expand the size of the other. One couldn’t walk through a portal human sized on side and try to squeeze out one fit for a mouse on the other. That kind of magical output was a lot at this point. He chuckled. “I’ll just need to sleep in pitch black to juice myself up after this.”

When they reached the room, things were calm. They explained everything to Luna and she seemed to understand it or, at the least, she wasn’t going to fight it. She didn’t offer much in terms of conversation. They escorted down into the side room where Mythal had discovered the connection aboard the vessel. Just as he’d explained, opening a portal between the two points – on the ship and in the base on Earthland – was easy. But just as he had done earlier, he had only managed to open one that maybe a cat could squeeze into. It took several minutes of focus and effort for him to open it further, inching it wider and taller with every passing second. It felt like he was trying to expand several rubber bands with each hand. But once it had reached peak sustainability and size, they were able to get Luna through without issue.

Just as he had expected, he was exhausted after the ordeal. Closing the portals felt like the first breath after being underwater for several minutes. He took a long moment to just catch his breath before he got to his feet. Serilda ensured that he got to bed, clearly taking the first shift within the ship. He didn’t fall asleep as quickly as he would have liked – after such a strenuous effort, his mind was racing. His senses were dulled slightly but not enough that he couldn’t feel movement on the outside of the ship. Akeya had started picking apart the swarm and then launched herself headfirst into battle. A part of him wanted to get up and go out to help her. There were a lot of those things outside, enough that his entire world felt like it was flapping. But he also knew going out there as he was would be dangerous.

In the end, he decided against it. And once he had made that choice, his mind and body finally find a comfortable place to put the lights out and fall into slumber.

Post by Akeya 17th August 2019, 3:08 pm

Akeya was actually learning quite a lot from engaging the dark sky piranhas. For one thing it quickly became clear that they didn't have anything going for them other than a decent speed, sharp teeth and sheer numbers. Those were enough that they could deal with any normal intruder but it meant they were horribly outclassed by anything which had an answer to straightforward physical attacks. They did not appear to possess any magic beyond the natural amount which was tied to being a living entity. They didn't turn invisible in the darkness, they had no magical attacks, in short as successful as they were on this planet they were about as ordinary a creature as you could imagine. The dragoness suspected that they'd remain the dominant lifeform until the first creature appeared which couldn't easily be torn apart.

Their attempts at eating Akeya were largely met with frustration. They'd surrounded her properly so she couldn't just keep flying about, but when they all charged in to dig their sharp fangs into her skin the assassin had released a burst of light which sent them reeling, in the confusion escaping from their cage made of bodies and flying away even as she cleaved several more into pieces with her dagger and string. By this point a fair amount of them were already lying died on the ground, where they most likely would remain until morning when the scientists could gather as many as they wanted and research them thoroughly. It was somewhat unfortunate that Akeya couldn't expose the bats to a wide variety of different effects to see how they reacted to different stimulus.

So far their bodies had reacted as she'd about expected from a biological carnivore of their size. Blunt trauma didn't do much because most of the force ended up just throwing them through the air. Even if she tried to crush them against a solid surface their bodies were compact and sturdy enough that it required more force than it was worth. Piercing and slashing attacks were a lot more efficient, especially since once their wings were torn they quickly fell down to the earth. Which also allowed her to learn that once these creatures lost their ability to fly there wasn't much else they could do. Similar to the bats on Earthland they had no capability of serving as earthbound predators.

Releasing another burst of light to once again scatter the sensitive flutterers Akeya considered what to do next. Given the amount of bats there were in the air she could keep killing them all night and still not have put a dent in their overall population. Most mages, even the very strong ones, would run out of stamina before they'd created a safe haven. The only reason she was managing was that she was regaining her energy as quickly as she expended it, the darkness around her effectively giving her unlimited stamina. Even so it'd get rather boring if she spent the entire night doing nothing but running around and slashing at the sky piranhas.

Time to experiment with another trick.

Dismissing her shadow blade she closed both clawed hands, clenching her fists and then opening them to reveal two spheres, one dark and the other light. They both emanated their respective element strongly, the air between the dragoness's hands quickly becoming a battleground between light and dark. Spinning around she launched both spheres into the sky, the dark and the light both intensifying at a rapid pace until half of the area was consumed by a deep darkness and the other illuminated by a brilliant light. Moving into the area where the light was dominant she could see that all the bats were trying to hurry over to the dark side, in accordance with their nocturnal lifestyle. However those who had been in the light zone at first quickly became infused with light themselves, glowing even as they flew into the dark where they disappeared.

    "Contrast."

For the next part of her experiment Akeya once more clenched her fists, this time sending the command for both of the spheres to expend all the energy she'd put into them until they dissipated. The sky returned to normal, although all objects (including the bats) were now either glowing or surrounded by a cloud of dark.

    "Conflict."

With that command all the bats found themselves rapidly pulled towards a point in the middle, glowing and obscured alike. Despite their best attempts whatever force was pulling them didn't relent, and where they met they quickly began to fall apart. Where a bat infused with light and a bat infused with dark met the two opposing elements forced one another out of existence, along with the bats. In short order there was actually a sizeable emptiness in the sky, the area in which all the bats had been negated in the conflict between light and dark.

As amusing as it had been to watch it happen, it didn't actually provide much data other than that the bats didn't show any special reaction. The light bats definitely had been uncomfortable with their condition but it had appeared to be the reaction of a creature which had a biological sensitivity to light, with no deeper source behind it. The dragoness summoned her shadow blade again as more bats descended from the sky, her miniature extinction event only having slowed down the onslaught for mere seconds before they resumed their relentless assault on the intruder.

She'd try to kill as many of them in as many ways as she could think of, and then go intangible again and wait out the rest of the night. She might be able to keep going but it'd become both boring and pointless eventually.

The next day the ground was littered by a wide variety of corpses. The bats had been bludgeoned, crushed, stabbed, slashed, hacked, ripped, pierced, and had various other physical types of injury inflicted on them. Beyond that there were bats who had parts of their bodies literally consumed by darkness, bats which had been burned to a crisp by concentrated blasts of light, and there were some bats which were still squirming and twitching as minor amounts of light and dark had invaded their bodies which were still conflicting with each other, like two virusses fighting over which one would kill the host. Akeya's research had been very thorough and without a single shred of mercy.

The twilight dragon herself was back on her spot on top of the shuttle, waiting for the other people of the expedition to finally come out now that the sun was up. It had been at least half an hour since the skies had been cleared out: despite Akeya's enthusiastic approach she'd been correct in assuming she wouldn't put a dent in the population. Even as she saw them depart for their caves she noted that there wasn't a visible difference in how many there were. Trying to get rid of them and let the world evolve without their oppressive dominance would be a project which most likely would take months or even years. And it wasn't the goal of this expedition anyway. Maybe something to consider down the line...

She shrugged and looked down at the shuttle. The sun was already visible above the mountains, weak as it may be compared to the sun back on Earthland. It was still enough to ensure that no bat would voluntarily remain out in the open, so it was safe for the scientists to come out. Although she suspected that either Serilda or Mythal would emerge first to help confirm that it was indeed safe at this point.

Staring off into the distance Akeya tapped one clawed finger against the hard surface of the shuttle as she wondered how to proceed next. The scientists would have little trouble processing the bats now they had so many specimen to choose from, but what else would they want to take a look at?

Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
Morning came quicker than she would have liked, but Serilda roused herself around dawn regardless. She was tired, but surely not as tired as Mythal or Akeya were. Both of them thus far had expended a lot more magical and physical energy than she had, where most of the energy she’d spent had been mental and emotional due to the confrontations of the previous day. She felt weary, but nothing she wouldn’t be able to push through.

Letting Mythal sleep longer, she got up and got dressed, doing a quick morning routine for hygiene before venturing out of the room. The scientists had traded shifts at some point during the night, a fresh crew examining the dead bodies of the bat creatures that Serilda had managed to pull into the ship for them. They were eager to get outside to see what else Akeya had revealed, but had wisely waited until the coast would be cleared for them.

Serilda could already sense that the fighting outside was over. There were no longer any creatures swarming the outside of the ship, and Akeya herself had resumed her perch up top. The Voidwalker floated up through the roof of the shuttle and out into the open until she was standing next to the dragoness. In her hands were two steaming mugs of liquid, a coffee for herself and either a coffee or tea for Akeya, depending on what the noblewoman would have observed her preference to be during the months they’d been traveling together.

“Mythal used his magic  last night to help Luna get back to Earthland,” she told the other woman as she offered her the cup. “I apologize for not consulting you before we made that decision, but what you were doing out here was more important at the time. And frankly, I figured you’d be in favor of it after everything yesterday. We shouldn’t have to worry about anymore complications on that front. Mythal may be asleep for a while longer though as he recovers some strength.”

The marshal gently blew the steam from the top of her cup and took a sip from it, letting the hot drink wake her up a bit. Her blue eyes roamed over the scene before her. The ground around the shuttle was absolutely littered with alien corpses, as was the top of the shuttle itself. “You seem to have enjoyed yourself,” Serilda remarked with a wry smirk. “The scientists were too excited to sleep last night, so I pulled in a few of the corpses for them so they could get a head start on their research. Don’t suppose you learned anything interesting while fighting them?”

She would drink her coffee in attentive silence as Akeya passed on anything the dragoness felt important to relay. Most of it likely wouldn’t be anything that would effect Serilda directly as the creatures that had survived the encounter with Akeya had already retired underground to hide from the sunlight. They wouldn’t return until darkness set again, but at the very least she could pass along any findings that Akeya had to the scientists for her.

Once they were done chatting, Serilda told her, “You’ve been a huge help with all this. Why don’t you go get something to eat and some rest? You and Mythal have been pulling most of the weight so far, it feels like. I’ll take point for a while so you guys can rejuvenate.” Though Serilda knew it wasn’t necessarily her fault that she hadn’t gotten to do a whole lot since they landed the day before, she didn’t want Akeya or Mythal to feel like they were doing the majority of the grunt work. She could certainly handle watching over everyone for a couple hours by herself, especially since it seemed like not a lot really went on here during the daytime.

Before long, the shuttle door was open and the scientists had their tables and equipment outside again, eagerly inspecting everything that Akeya had left for them. For the most part, Serilda let them do their own thing and did not bother them, since there was little she could to do contribute to their research. Instead, she left Xiuhcoatl and Gren outside to keep an eye on the crew while Serilda finally took some time to do a bit of exploring herself. She didn’t stray too far, but she did want the chance to see this new and strange place with her eyes rather than just her magical senses.

She decided to help out by looking around for samples of the local flora. There wasn’t a ton of greenery on this planet, but to her that just made whatever plant life did exist there all the more important and interesting. Every time she came across a new patch of flowers or a different type of bush, she used her magic to carve a section of it out of the ground, roots and all. It didn’t take very long for her to have a trail of plants floating behind her. She also tried to look out for any bodies of water, taking samples of the ones she came across and putting it in little jars.

As she was moving around, she kept her Void senses active for anything out of the ordinary. Only once did anything feel different enough to cause her to stop and peer out in the distance. Whatever was there wasn’t close enough for her to get a solid read on from this far. Briefly she thought about checking it out, but figured it was best to wait for the others. She had already ventured further than she’d intended to.

Serilda returned with her gifts, sending the crew into another excited tizzy as they eagerly collected the goods she found. She stayed by the ship from there on out until Mythal and Akeya were up and about, ready to do some more work. “I may have found something, but I’m not entirely sure,” she told the both of them. “I sensed something far to the east while I was gathering some of the plant life. I’m not entirely sure what it was… the structural shape of it just didn’t match the rest of the planet’s layout. Either it’s a natural formation we haven’t come across yet, or it’s some kind of man made structure.”

Man made wasn’t necessarily the right term, since they knew nothing about any sentient life so far in the area, but the others would understand what she was getting at. “I wanted to see what you guys thought before running off to look into it by myself.”

    Better safe than sorry.

Post by Mythal Ragnos 25th April 2020, 4:18 pm

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

Mythal was a heavy sleeper and he was not an early morning person. It was one of the defining differences between himself and Serilda and when one could find him early in the day, he certainly didn’t have the look of one that was enjoying his time up and moving. He was especially tired after a night of utilizing a spell he had only experimented with. He passed out quick and hard, sleeping deeply for the first time on their six month trip. He didn’t even budge as Serilda got herself up and prepared for the day, showering and dressing herself before departing to oversee the culmination of the night’s activities.

He wasn’t sure how long after she had gotten up and left that he began to stir. Groaning, he rolled over and flung a hand in the direction of her body, only to find it empty. He opened a single eye to find the bed empty, wondering where she could have gone. Then he remembered where he was and groaned again, pushing himself up into a sitting position. Yawning, he brought his hand up and flexed the muscles beneath it, including his magic. The pool within had filled overnight and he was back up to full strength. That was a relief. With a sigh he flung his legs over the side of the bed and stood himself up next to the bed.

He reached out with his senses, searching through the shadows of the ship and outside. Though the sun was out, he could feel the lumps of mass that littered the ground all around the vessel, bodies of the creatures that Akeya had slain over the hours of nighttime. Clearly she had done the proper work she had intended and then some. No doubt the scientists were in a pleasant tizzy over all the testing material. They probably wanted to get back outside and search for more subjects to study.

No point in wasting anymore time sleeping then. The Darkness King walked into the bathroom and took care of his morning routine, whatever that could be called. He honestly just mimicked what Serilda did, finding her method easier to follow and, arguably, healthier. He dressed himself quickly and walked out of the room, grumbling as he pulled on the rest of his clothes. He passed by several members of the team, excitedly chattering about one result here or one testing method there. It was all sciency junk that he didn’t understand even a little bit. He simply accepted that their happiness was good for the mission.

Yet Mythal couldn’t help but feel wrong about the planet as a whole. His senses weren’t strong enough to encapsulate the entire world but there was something about its soil, the very earth that made up the crust. It was like it had been corrupted right down to its roots. As much as Luna’s explosions had been jarring, it was clear that they had come from somewhere. She had been relatively off base from the beginning but it wasn’t until she went running wildly outside that her entire mood took a vast left turn. And given that her magic involved being connected to the ground, she probably absorbed what was there.

He could feel it too, to a point. It was some kind of sequence, some kind of rhythm within darkness -- his main element. Given time, he would probably be able to manipulate it as well, should he choose to. But he didn’t want to spend too much time on this planet. Already he had decided to work on mastering the portals, so that they could get back to Earthland sooner rather than later. A quick escape once all the tests were done. He was certain that when they arrived back and he revealed his ability to zip back and forth with ease, the company would ask that he take them back to the planet. That would be a solid no -- as far as he was concerned, they could get their samples and then leave this planet to rot. It had already been doing so for longer than they knew.

Mythal stopped off at the cafeteria to grab a quick bite to eat and then headed towards his training room. As he downed his coffee, he turned on a single overhead light in the room near the center of the room. That left the rest of the room in darkness, which was exactly what he wanted. With a wave of his hand, he pulled the pitch towards the cone of light, combining it in a ball in the center of the circle of illumination. His fingers splayed outwards as he took a mental hold of the swirling orb, manipulating it until it was a perfect ball. From there, he closed his eyes and reached back into his mind, remembering the sensation of the connection point in Magnolia. The frequency resonated in his mind and he pushed it towards the ball of darkness, forcing the strange addition into its mass.

The orb shifted and lifted up, purple and black magic dancing within the oval shaped portal. It was still small but as he focused harder on it, it began to grow larger. He grunted softly from the strain but kept on pushing, wanting to make it as large as possible. Soon enough a full sized human could walk through and from there, he worked on stabilizing the connection. Molding the shape wasn’t nearly as bad as maintaining the connection to Earthland. But now that he had done it once, he understood the feeling much better. After several minutes of solidifying the portal, he finally released it, letting the darkness seep back into the rest of the room.

Mythal made his way outside, walking by every scientist on board as they siphoned in and out of the ship. Serilda was there, watching over the bustling men and women as they explored all the new samples they were receiving. “ ‘Ey,” he said, walking up beside her and sliding a hand over her back. “Looks like these guys are feelin’ pretty good about everythin’,” he said, glancing around. “Like kids at Christmas.”

He waited there with Seri until Akeya joined them and then the Voidwalker revealed that she had picked up on something in the east while she was gathering plant life. Her senses had picked up a strange shape that didn’t match the rest of the planet’s layout. She had opted to wait for them rather than explore it by herself. “Smart. I don’t trust anythin’ about this planet so better to work in a group. I’m ready whenever -- these guys seem to be runnin’ on automatic at this point,” he mentioned, gesturing to the scientists around them.

Post by Akeya 26th April 2020, 12:08 pm

Akeya had an acute awareness of everything that was occurring around her, the light and dark combining to create a nearly perfect three-dimensional image of the area. As such she didn't give any sign of surprise or startlement when Serilda phased through the shuttle to join her on top of it, the dragoness just turning her head and nodding towards her fellow space explorer to acknowledge her. Her emerald eyes quickly focused on the cup of tea that Serilda was holding and she accepted it without hesitation when offered. "Thanks." She'd been able to recharge most of her energy by absorbing the light and dark of this world, but a little bit of tea could never hurt. Especially since neither light nor dark really did the job of quenching your thirst under normal circumstances.

As Serilda explained that Mythal had sent Luna back after the two of them had come to the agreement that it was probably better for everyone involved the dragoness shrugged. She had to admit that having to deal with the fairy's breakdown the first day had delayed their work here a bit, and she didn't doubt that Luna was also happier being back home in a world she was properly attuned to. This world definitely wasn't like Earthland. "Probably for the best. Even if she tried to set aside her discomfort it'd most likely still distract her and make things more difficult for all of us. Although that does mean we're now lacking in healing magic should someone get injured." Part of the fairy's task had been to keep everyone in good health after all. It was rather ironic that she was the one who had to be sent back for mental reasons. "I wasn't planning on being reckless before, but you should update the scientists on that front." People could start behaving in very stupid ways if they thought that they didn't have to worry about the consequences.

She remained silent for a while after that, drinking her tea and staring into the distance. She'd had plenty of time to get used to the view, but it was still worth seeing. Everyone else seemed to be mildly to strongly creeped out by this alien place, but Akeya mostly just found it intriguing. And the near-permanent darkness was rather comforting. "I'm not one for mindless slaughter, but there's some cathartic release to be had in cutting loose occasionally. Especially against targets nobody cares about." She frowned briefly as she considered what to say in her head, then began to speak again. "Honestly once you've figured out their main traits that's about all you need. They're small, fast, and numerous, but they're about as fragile as a bat back home. Their bodies are reasonably resilient towards blunt trauma but they're cut and pierced just fine. They don't appear to have any real magic and are incapable of threatening anything which they can't bite." She raised her free hand and one of the corpses nearby was lifted by its own shadow, after which Akeya threw it into the distance. "Fangs sharp enough to pierce through the suits the scientists use to survive in this environment, small enough that they can move in large numbers without getting in each other's way, fast enough that most creatures can't outrun them. They behave less like individual organisms and more like parts of a single whole. Kind of like the insects back home. Oh, and apparently they don't eat their own dead." That last part was at least somewhat interesting, since it implied that either they never needed to eat their own dead to survive or something made eating their bodies a bad decision.

"Of course you should still stay hidden at night. All their numerous weaknesses don't matter if there's so many of them that you might as well call the amount infinite. To move about at night you either need a way to not be detected, be too difficult to kill, or use a virus-like attack which propagates freely." She herself had primarily relied on the fact that she was both good at being stealthy and turning intangible. If it wasn't for those two things she'd probably have been in serious trouble. "Not that the scientists need to be reminded."

When Serilda suggested that Akeya go and recover from a night of activity the dragoness considered the offer for several seconds before nodding. "I suppose I might as well. There shouldn't be anything dangerous around here right now but with how alien this world is you should probably still remain on guard." Given her own and Serilda's respective sensory abilities the odds of being caught by surprise were extremely low, but there wasn't any reason to run the risk. Neither of them was the lazy type who'd let themselves get ambushed just because they couldn't be arsed to keep an eye out.

Giving Serilda a final nod Akeya disappeared, reforming inside the shuttle using one of the numerous shadows present. Returning the empty cup to the cafeteria she moved to her room, laying down on her bed and closing her eyes. She didn't have time for a full eight hours of sleep but with Serilda keeping watch and Mythal most likely waking up soon she could afford a couple of hours. Within no time at all she'd drifted off, or at least so far as she was capable of drifting off in an alien environment. A part of her would always be wary in situations such as these.

A while later she woke up again, quickly checking the outside to get an idea of what time it was. It was still day, with plenty of time left, although on this strange world even noon wasn't very bright. It was a peculiar sensation, that she could be here day and night and never have to face the kind of light that Earthland was exposed to on a daily basis.

Getting out of bed Akeya didn't waste much time with preparations, focusing on taking a quick shower before heading out. Light and dark were enough sustenance for her, and tasted better than the space food that the scientists had prepared for this expedition.

Exiting the shuttle the twilight dragon rejoined Serilda and Mythal, tilting her head as the void mage explained that she'd noticed something odd to the east. The idea that it was manmade was... well, she was rather skeptical. They'd landed at a location with plants, plenty of space and access to water. If there was no sign of civilization here she somewhat doubted there'd ever been a lifeform on this planet which had advanced enough to create lasting artificial structures. However even if that was the case it was still something unusual that Serilda had found, and thus worth investigating.

"The scientists should remain happy as long as they've got specimen to study, especially with the plants that Serilda added to the mix. I agree that we should check this out as a group. I'm sure that if something happens here at the shuttle at least one of us can return in time to help out." One nearly universal ability that powerful mages such as the three of them had was the ability to cover distance very quickly, one way or another, whether it was through teleportation, portals or simply moving very fast.

Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
The dragoness took the cup readily with a word of thanks, with Serilda merely giving the woman a small smile in reply. The noblewoman explained the decision that they had come to in regard to Luna, and Akeya merely shrugged and agreed that it was likely the best solution on all fronts, even if it left them without a focused healer. While the dragoness stated that she hadn’t made plans to take Luna’s healing abilities for granted, it was probably best that everyone be more vigilant about their safety from here on out. Serilda nodded. “You’re right. I’m sure most of them have already considered that, but it doesn’t hurt to have a meeting with them about it and make sure we’re all on the same page. I can do some healing here and there, but certainly not to Luna’s abilities.”

She sighed and rubbed her head a little. It would have been nice to keep the healer but after everything the day before Serilda was glad the woman was gone, now. She had been the one that Luna had focused most of her anxieties on, and while the Voidwalker didn’t mind being support for an ailing ally, it wasn’t a situation that she readily knew how to deal with, and it had left her tending to and essentially babysitting the fairy while the others had focused on the mission. While it certainly wasn’t as bad as yesterday, she still had a lingering headache from it all. With any luck that would go away after the coffee set in.

The two were content to stand in relative silence with one another, taking in the early morning view and enjoying their warm glasses. When Serilda mused over Akeya’s handiwork with all the slain critters around them, the dragoness admitted that while she wasn’t the type to get any kind of kick out of a senseless massacre, there was something soothing about being able to let everything go from time to time, particularly if it didn’t harm anyone or anything that held any real significance. There was a brief pause as Akeya considered her words before passing along her observations on the little beasts. They were fast and traveled in impossible sized packs, but easily slain through piercing attacks. They seemed to carry no trace of magic, and outside of biting they were relatively harmless all things considered.

Serilda listened to the woman’s overview with the occasional thoughtful nod, thinking how much they reminded her of piranhas in the ocean. The most interesting note was Akeya’s statement that none of them had eaten any of their dead. Were they poisonous, perhaps? Or maybe the creatures weren’t that desperate for food. It was hard to tell, particularly when these were the only such creatures they’d seen since arriving on the planet. What did they eat? Clearly not plantlife with all those sharp teeth. There had to be something else living on this planet for them to devour. Shrugging the thoughts off, she took in the dragoness’ suggestion that they should still stay indoors at night. Even if these bat-like creatures were easily slain, their numbers alone and the speed at which they moved made them a very serious threat.

The suggestion that Akeya take the time to get some rest was accepted after some thought, the dragoness advising that it would still be best to remain alert despite the daylight hours seeming to be safer than nighttime here. “I’ll do my best,” Serilda informed her with a small, somewhat playful smile. “Enjoy your rest.” Akeya nodded to her and then was gone, leaving the Voidwalker alone with the scientists for a time. She helped them get set up and then had flown around collecting bits of plants and dirt and such for them, keeping an eye on everything without just standing around. It was nice to get some actual work done, and despite the dangers that clearly existed on the globe the work itself was quite relaxing.

Shortly after she had returned, Mythal emerged and made his way over to her. Serilda smiled as he ran his hand idly against her back. “Good morning,” she told him softly, giving him a small kiss. The darkness slayer commented on how much the scientists were bustling around, as excited as children at Christmas. Serilda chuckled. “It’s certainly amusing, in a wholesome way. They get so much enjoyment out of such simple things, but are able to turn all of that into impactful data that I could never replicate if I tried.” Science was an intricate and difficult field of study. As simple as their work appeared on the surface, she knew that there was years if not decades of study and experience at work before them.

She waited until Akeya was present with them as well before bringing up the odd shape she’d observed off to the east that didn’t feel like it belonged with the rest of the terrain. Both of the darkness mages agreed that it was worth checking out as a group, and that the scientists would probably be fine here on their own as long as it was daylight out. They had plenty to go over between Akeya’s slain beasts and Serilda’s plants, and if anything did come up one or more of the three of them could get back near instantaneously if need be. Since they were all in agreement, Serilda excused herself to go let the scientists know what the plan was and where they were going, reminding them to be extra careful now that Luna was gone and to go inside the ship and shut the doors immediately if anything happened.

Once that was done, the three of them were off toward the east with Serilda leading them into the direction of the odd shape she’d felt, curious to see what it was. It would be embarrassing if it turned out to be nothing, of course, but better safe than sorry. As they got closer, her Void Sense was able to pick the feature out more clearly. Was it a building of some kind? Soon it came into view, and as they touched back down to the ground Serilda couldn’t help but for her pale eyes to go wide with wonder. “Oh wow…” she breathed.

It appeared to be a temple of some kind, carved directly out of the stone hills. Aside from spots where it had been touched by natural decay, its structure was smooth and almost peacefully symmetrical, standing two stories high from what they could see of the front with pillars and arches and alcoves having been chiseled into its architecture. The decorations carved into it appeared to be fairly simple; with no remarkable symbols or markings to denote the original crafters. The scientists were going to lose their minds. With them in mind, she took her iLac out of her pocket and swapped it to the camera. While she certainly had no reception this far away from Earthland, she had still seen it prudent to bring the device if only for its ability to take pictures, which she did now so that they could have something to bring back to the rest of the crew upon their return.

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

Serilda had certainly been up and about while he had taken his time getting up. She’d gone out and accumulated some of the local flora for the scientists, to which they had eagerly gobbled up into their observations and research. He found her outside, watching the scientists bustling around the place with the excitement of children in a toy factory. He walked up and gave her a gentle kiss before pulling back to look around the place. He remarked about their excitement and the Voidwalker chuckled, musing over the fact that such happiness came in such a state of hard work. He nodded along as she said there was no way she could replicate what they would certainly find. “Yeah I ain’t about this science stuff. Pro’lly because I never went to like… school for it. Gren taught me the best he could but only so much one man can do with his own limited education.” Gren had been a Rune Knight through and through and he was far more on the soldier spectrum than anything else.

They didn’t have  to wait much longer for Akeya to join them, allowing Serilda the opportunity to explain about the strange structure she had seen to the east. That was curious enough to investigate and it made sense that the three of them lead the charge. No doubt if they brought it up with one of the head scientists, they would argue that someone from their foundation should accompany them. They seemed fairly foolhardy when it came to their studies. But putting any other lives in danger -- especially ones that didn’t possess the level of magic the three of them did -- would have been a waste and irresponsible. Akeya stated that should anything happen at the shuttle while they were gone, she was sure that at least one of them could return before matters took a turn for the worse. “Agreed. My portals ain’t exactly the most stable at the moment but I can still move pretty quickly if it comes to it.” The magic he had from Kingdom Darkness would give him quite the boost should he have any need to make a hasty retreat.

Serilda took a moment to go and let the scientists know where they were headed. With a moment for just the two of them, Mythal took another look around and snorted softly. “Seems like you certainly had some fun last night,” he remarked to Akeya, turning to look back at her. “Kinda sad I missed it. Unfortunately I was a little tapped out by the time I coulda come out. I’m assumin’ that Seri told you everything about Luna.” Counting that Akeya confirmed she already knew, he would nod softly. “Not a happy thing to do but… I ain’t about addin’ anymore needless danger to our mission than this planet is already offerin’.” Between the bats and whatever was lying within the tunnels of the planet, anything else piling upon them would prove to be a nuisance at best.

Once Serilda returned, it was time to head to the east. The Voidwalker led the way, guiding them through her senses while Mythal and Akeya followed directly behind her. His own senses expanded downwards through the crust, seeking the tunnels he had felt before. Already he could feel the thousands upon thousands of bat creatures as they hung from the ceiling, resting after a long night of roaming. He was honestly surprised at just how many he felt, considering that Akeya had claimed so many during her evening hunt. Then again, who knew how long these things had been nesting within the confines of the planet, reproducing over and over again. It was  highly likely that they were the apex creatures on this world, if only for their numbers alone.

Soon enough the object that Serilda had sensed came into view and the trio set down to take it in from ground level. It was certainly man-made, or some kind of sentient species at least. There was no denying the fact that it was etched into the hillside with tools and designs that came from an intelligent species. It had certainly survived for quite some time, as pieces of the structure had crumbled and decayed with age. But other than that, a lot of the foundation and pillars remained as smooth as the day they were carved. It was intricately forged, with several arches and divots manufactured right into the stone. The more decorative carvings -- the symbols and ideograms -- were archaic and were certainly easy enough to mark without complicated turns or movements.

As Serilda took out her iLac and proceeded to snap some pictures, Mythal wandered over to the building and looked it up and down. “Some kind of temple,” he mumbled as he looked upwards at the two-story building, eyes scanning the surface for anything that stuck out. He couldn’t spot anything beyond the designs themselves so he took a few more steps inward, letting his senses reach deep within. The inside of the temple felt different than the rest of the planet but he couldn’t quite tell why. Even his nose picked up on a scent that he couldn’t quite distinguish. It felt and smelled wrong but no less than the rest of the world. Maybe, it being a man made structure, the essence of the world had seeped into the architecture and infected it. It was carved out of the stone from the world after all.

“If we let the scientists study this, we may want to be careful,” he said, turning to Akeya and Serilda. “I dunno why but this thing just feels… off.”

Post by Akeya 14th May 2020, 4:58 pm

With all three of them in agreement that they could return with haste if something happened at the shuttle there was nothing stopping the three of them from going out and investigating Serilda's findings. Well, other than that the void mage first had to go and inform the scientists that they had to go out and investigate something, but that shouldn't take too long. The dragoness folded her arms as the other female mage left her and Mythal behind for the moment, turning her head to look at the darkness mage as he commented on her performance during the night. "It was definitely an enjoyable experience. And yes, she did. It's not very surprising that you'd be tired after that." She lifted one hand to trace a circle in the air with her clawed index finger. "Portals are certainly convenient constructs of magic but even those have their limits. Frankly it's already an impressive feat that you could connect with Earthland at all, much less create a passage large enough for Luna to pass through. Akeya herself didn't use portals, but she did know quite a lot about them. They were a very popular topic amongst mages and commoners alike, and thus there were many scrolls and books covering them.

Although she lifted her shoulders in a rather dismissive manner when her companion called the event sad. "Given how she reacted to being on this planet it would most likely be more tragic if she had been forced to remain here. The biggest issue is that we now have to ensure that everyone remains careful enough that we don't risk regretting sending away the dedicated healer of our expedition. So far it looks like the bats are the biggest threat of this planet to the point of suppressing everything else, but I prefer to err on the side of caution."

Once Serilda returned the twilight dragon readily followed her, using her own senses to scout the area as well. Her dual nature allowed her to track both light and dark, which meant she had a pretty good sense of her surroundings, and over a large distance as well. It didn't take long for her to also take notice of the odd shape that Serilda had picked up on, the dragoness raising her eyebrows in surprise. Even from a distance she could tell that the regularity, the sharpness of the angles...

It looked like her initial assumption that it couldn't have been manmade might have been wrong after all.

When they reached the construction hewn out of the side of the hill itself Akeya stepped forward, her emerald eyes scrutinizing every nook and cranny, taking note of the decorations as well as the architecture. It wasn't unlike what one might find on earth, although it also had its own uniquely distinct style. She wasn't an engineer or an architect, but she was learned enough that she could already draw several conclusions from what she could see here.

"I agree." Her first words were a response to Mythal as he stated that there was something off about this scene. "I can't make out what exactly it is either, but there is a sense that there is something here which isn't... supposed to be here. Or maybe it's not supposed to exist at all." Her gaze travelled up at the archs and various other pieces of architecture that helped give life to the nicely symmetrical building. Albeit worn down by time. "Whatever it was that made this it must have been remarkably similar to the sapient lifeforms on Earthland. The scale and shape suggest that it can't have been too alien at least. However the architecture is different from anything back home, and we should be the first expedition here. Yet there are no other signs of civilization in the area..." Her brow furrowed as she considered all this, the tip of her tail twitching behind her. "Even aside from that strange offness there's just something strange about all this." Maybe other travellers had built this? But even then you would have expected some signs of civilization... had everything else been worn away by time? Had they simply been looking in the wrong place?

"However for now let's carefully explore it. We can't just send the scientists in here without knowing what they'd encounter." A part of Akeya would rather just stay away from this place, but her job wouldn't let her get away that easily. Taking a deep breath she began to make her way inside if neither of the other mages had any strong objections to the idea.

At least none of them would be bothered by the lack of light inside.

"If either of you wants to take the lead, be my guest." The insides were built the same way as the outside, and were as spacious as you'd expect of a temple of this size. It started out as a single tunnel which led deeper into the hill, but then opened up into a large room with multiple paths leading into several directions. To the sides there were hallways with doorways lined up, but ahead there was a larger opening which led deeper into the darkness.

"People lived in the sidewings, but there's something strange up ahead... I think it might have been the place of actual worship but something seems to be messing with my perception abilities." Indeed, the depths of the temple didn't want to be explored by someone who just looked at it from the outside: visions from what was inside were fuzzy at best and distorted at worst. That power which made Akeya and Mythal both feel like something was off was strong here, filling the air with an ominousness which couldn't be easily explained or ignored. Like the feeling that you knew someone was standing in front of the door leading to your bedroom but you didn't know who or what or why. But then much, much worse.

Akeya wouldn't be very surprised if the first scientists which came this far would promptly turn around and walk away again. She actually liked this planet but even she was getting the shivers from this place. It felt wrong, and she didn't say that quickly. "Some of this architecture does remind me a lot of descriptions of ruins on Earthland, but there's always a little something to it that makes it different. It's... disconcerting."

    Seri Banner
Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
As Akeya and Mythal busied themselves taking in the sight of the odd structure, Serilda worked on collecting some physical evidence of it to take back to the scientists. She took several shots of the full front of it, wanting to ensure that she took clear enough photos. Then, she flew up and gave the same treatment to the sides and the top, getting as much as she could to show the way the building bled back into the rock formation that it had clearly been carved from. After that, she took a couple quick shots close up of some of the shapes and runes and any other parts of the exterior that looked interesting. Truthfully Serilda really didn’t know what to look for, as she wasn’t an archeologist herself, but she at least tried to cover as many bases as possible.

Mythal and Akeya both voiced their thoughts over the wrong feeling that they were getting from the place, with the latter going into more detail about it. The dragoness explained that to her it felt as though something about this didn’t seem to belong here, perhaps wasn’t even supposed to exist. Serilda frowned and looked back upon the structure as Akeya went on, saying how the structure was clearly similar to stuff that existed on Earthland, and seemed to have been build with humanoid shape and sized creatures in mind, though the architecture itself was still much different than anything Earthland natives had been known to make. But what was weirder to the twilight dragon was how there was no other evidence of sentient life on the planet, just this singular, man made structure in the middle of nowhere.

Yet even more than that, she was getting the sense that there was something off about it, same as Mythal. In fact, the dragoness seemed… not scared, but perhaps a bit unsettled? It was certainly a reaction that Serilda had never seen in Akeya before, which gave her pause for concern. The darker haired woman wasn’t what she would call reckless, but she was certainly confident in herself and her abilities to the point where Serilda had yet to see her really bothered by anything. The noblewoman herself didn’t quite get the sensation that Akeya and Mythal were, which probably had more to do with her lack of affinity to darkness like the two of them had. She certainly felt a bit unsettled by the structure, but it was more of a gut feeling than a magical one. There was something she sensed though that continued to draw her attention to a singular point within the structure, some phenomenon she couldn’t quite put her finger on.

Akeya suggested they venture inside to see what was there, stating that it would be ill advised to allow the scientists in here blindly. “Agreed,” Serilda said, slipping her iLac back in her pocket and following the dragoness into the entry area of the temple -- or whatever it was. Temple seemed most likely, though what it was there to revere or worship was beyond her ability to guess at the moment. It was completely black inside with no lights to illuminate the way forward, but that wouldn’t stop any of the three of them from being aware of the general surroundings. Mythal and Akeya were attuned to darkness and it did not blind them. Serilda, while her eyes were certainly blind without a light source, was more than capable of sensing the shape of the world around her by reading the molecular space of matter, allowing her to be keenly aware of the shape of the building and everything in it as though she could see it.

The invitation was extended for one of them to take the lead if they desired, further cementing Serilda’s mental conjectures on Akeya not quite being comfortable with what they were dealing with. Not that the noblewoman blamed her. Her own gut was throwing up a number of red flags, but years of military discipline shoved the sensation down to a place where she could ignore it for the time being. They were currently in a large room that gave way to a line of other doorways leading out to other parts of the temple carved through the bedrock, as well as a more prominent door directly ahead of them that seemed to set a more ominous path toward whatever it was that was drawing Serilda’s attention. Akeya must have felt it too, voicing her thoughts that it might be some place of worship but that there was something interfering with her ability to actually perceive what was beyond.

Serilda frowned. They were certainly sensing the same thing, but with different outcomes. “There is definitely something further ahead,” she said, staring down the hallway despite not being able to visibly see through it, doing her best to examine it with more focus through her Void Sense. “I can feel… an object of some kind, but it’s odd. I can’t actually discern its shape, and it feels… Empty? I’m not sure how else to describe it. It feels like a yawning in my magic; like a blind spot of some kind that feels both smaller and bigger than it should.” She’d never sensed anything like it before, and she made no effort to hide the concern in her voice about it. After a moment, the Knight told them, “I’ll take point. Whatever it is we’re all sensing is clearly central to this place, and I at least have a sense for its location. And since my magic is heavily defensive, I’m probably the better person to risk in a potential trap of some kind.”

Assuming that was agreeable for the two of them, Serilda tapped into her magic and set up a few of her defensive wards on herself. She’d also offer to do the same with either of them if they wanted some extra defensive insurance on top of their own abilities. “Better safe than sorry.” Once that was settled however everyone wanted, she’d withdraw both of her scimilars and carefully began to lead the way forward. Moonlight gave a very faint glow, but the darkness in the temple was so permeating that the sword’s light was barely visible through it, like the darkness was sucking the light away before it could really get the chance to exist. In her other hand, Malice blended in so deeply with the atmosphere that Serilda almost wouldn’t have known it was there if she couldn’t feel it solidly in her hand, the sword a near antithesis of Moonlight in its aversion to light.

As they walked, Serilda’s senses were on high alert for details on a molecular level, doing her best to be on top of any potential triggers and trap mechanics around them. If there were traps with magical triggers that would be a different story, but with any luck hopefully Mythal or Akeya would be able to make up for what she lacked in that particular department. The temple continued to feel like it was just rooms and hallways carved into solid rock, however. Aside from the perplexing phenomenon that they moved toward, and the fact that the temple was entirely out of place against what they’d observed of the planet so far, nothing else was really out of the ordinary or immediately alarming.

“We’re getting close, I think,” she told them after a minute or two of meticulous trekking. “The shape is still fuzzy, but getting more clear the closer we get. I think it’s a rectangular block of some kind, but it’s huge.” Sure enough, after a few more feet they entered an immensely sized room that stretched out for at least a hundred meters on either side and boasted an equally impressive vaulted ceiling. The architecture of the temple continued in this room with various pillars and symmetrical carvings and layouts, but despite its size the room was almost empty. There lay only one object of note at the center of the gargantuan room: An immensely sized obelisk. It was taller than it was wide, rectangular in shape, and as black as the darkness that permeated the rest of the chamber. It was also floating a couple feet off the ground.

This close, the object was starting to be a bit dizzying to her. Serilda shook her head with a frown, trying to clear the lightheadedness. She slowly approached the thing a little closer, though still keeping a respectable distance from it, and focused her magic on it to try studying it some more. The effort heightened her disjointed equilibrium, but she pushed through it stubbornly. “Whatever this thing is,” Serilda told them, her voice quieter than she meant it to be. They would probably be able to hear the strain in her words as she struggled with the irritation the thing was giving her.  “It’s doing a number on my Void Sense. I’m getting a bit of vertigo. It almost feels like…” She paused in thought, trying to describe an entirely new feeling. “I’m not sure. Like it’s bigger inside than its exterior suggests? That’s the only way I can think to explain it. It’s solid all the way through but the space inside feels almost infinite.”
