Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
Well, this was certainly going to be a risky mission.

Ever since the disastrous events of Joya, the continent of Ishgar had been thrown into political turmoil. The attempted peace treaties between Bellum and Pergrande had failed catastrophically thanks to the unfortunate intervention of several known and unknown individuals that were against the treaty, and by the time the literal dust had settled the country of Joya had been almost completely wiped off the map. The death toll was staggering, and Serilda had barely slept since. She and Mythal had been pouring over all sorts of reports and organizing investigation after investigation to get to the bottom of a very tragic and complicated situation. It was a slow and stressful process, only made harder by the fact that three fourths of the nations of Ishgar had understandably closed their borders, Fiore included.

Yet, that did not stop the rest of the world from turning, and there was still other work to be done that didn’t have the time or luxury of waiting for politicians to sort themselves out. That was how Serilda had found herself in a region of territory between Hosenka and the forests of Sakuramori, approaching the guild hall of one of the newer legal guilds known as Luminous Rose. A job opportunity had been directed to her, and while Serilda didn’t have a whole lot of time these days to take on missions that weren’t related to Rune Knight matters she understood why she had been approached for the work. A team of expeditioners had gone missing deep in the frozen wastes of Iceberg, and the individual that had funded the mission feared the worst. Unfortunately, between the dangerous, frigid climate, the hostile barbarians that called the country home, and the general state of the world, the number of mages powerful and qualified enough to launch a rescue mission were few and far between. And given Serilda’s particular type of magic, her status as a Goddess of Ishgar, and her political influence, she was a natural choice for the job.

However, she was not going to be running it alone. The client had hired a second mage that was a member of Luminous Rose to accompany Serilda. The field marshal had never met the individual and knew very little about her, but it seemed the other woman’s power was also nothing to scoff at, and between the two of them the client felt that the pair would be more than enough to get the job done. So Serilda had sent a message to the guild to the attention of one Fortunita letting her know that Serilda would meet up with her at Luminous Rose. Given that the women were essentially going to have to sneak across the border illegally, it seemed wise to start in an area that wasn’t as crowded or heavily watched as Era where the Rune Knights were located, so she was more than happy to make the quick journey.

Most of her travel was cut by simply teleporting to Hosenka, which was a town that Serilda spent quite a bit of time in. From there, she simply walked the rest of the way to the guild. Since this wasn’t an official Rune Knight mission, Serilda had foregone her uniform that day in place of one of her personal armor sets. She wore a pair of leather pants below a loose fitting white blouse with long sleeves. The blouse was tucked into a leather underbust corset that was secured in place with a steel belt encrusted with jade stones. She wore thick leather gloves and boots, and strapped on either hip were her two scimitars, the swords secured in simple but high quality sheathes that masked their enchanted energies. Her long white hair was pulled back into a loose bun at the base of her skull, and she walked with a confident, upright stride that spoke to her noble upbringing and her position as a leader of high note. Beside her walked a beautiful large wolf with thick fur as black as the night sky with cream colored dusting throughout the coat that made the creature appear to be covered in stardust. The wolf trotted obediently by Serilda’s heel without a leash, alert to the world around her with a calm and collected eye.

Gently making her way into the entry foyer of the guild, Serilda took a moment to stop and take in her surroundings, observing the space and the various people gathered there. Then, she made her way over to whatever would seem to serve as an official greeting area for guests and waited politely to get someone’s attention. “Good afternoon. My name is Serilda, and I’m here to meet with one of your members, Fortunita. She should be expecting me…”

Finding the Lost Empty Re: Finding the Lost

Post by Fraag 13th February 2022, 7:23 pm

As someone who had sufficient power to be regarded as powerful, even if she wasn’t currently known around Fiore, the name Fortunita had begun to get around. As one of the most powerful members of one of the most prominent light guilds in the country, even though she was a relative newcomer, it was not long before she began garnering a bit of attention, seeing as the strong would always be attention magnets. While notice was placed on the evil ones in fear and apprehension, eyes were just as equally laid on the good, to be sources of inspiration and hope, as well as a bulwark against the power of evil. Which was why it had not been particularly surprising that the young Pergrandian mage had received a request from a client, expressing hope that she would be available for a rescue mission. From the details of this mission, it was to be carried out in Iceberg. At present, the Ishgaran continent was in a lot of turmoil, and the gears of full-scale war were turning, with the precursor of hostilities being nations closing their borders, Iceberg included. This meant that getting into the country would have to be a relatively illegal act, especially as the institutions replying to this quest were Fiorean, which was currently at variance with Iceberg, as far as the political weather was concerned.

There were a number of advantages to be had, though. First off was that the people of Iceberg were not known to travel about much. As such, there was the hope that even if the Fiorean mages had to speak to anyone, they would not be able to geographically place their accents. If they could, Nita’s accent was unmistakably Pergrandian, and even though she had yet not chosen what side of the war to fight in (the realization that she would have to do so soon had been a major source of distress for her), Pergrande was an ally of Iceberg, and as such, she was sure she would not be regarded with so much hostility. But perhaps her greatest ally was her natural proficiency with languages, which had resulted in her having a grasp of at least every major spoken Ishgaran language by the time she encountered the Primordial that gave her her powers. From there, learning became even so much easier, and by this time, she could speak each one of these languages with native-born fluency, even if her Pergrandian lilt remained. As such, she was hopeful that she would be able to defuse any potential issues with the natives, and cover up for the mage with whom she was going on the quest.

And speaking of the other mage… Nita had almost died from shock after receiving a message from no other person than the Field Marshal of the Knights of Fiore herself, informing the Luminous Rose mage of the time and place of their rendezvous, as they were to be partners on this mission. That she would be not only meeting, but working with Serilda Sinclair had turned Nita into a nervous wreck for a good portion of the time between when she received the message, and the start of the mission. Yet, Nita was no incompetent buffoon, and she had been able to summon enough willpower to do the extra preparation and reading necessary to equip herself with whatever resources and knowledge she would need for this particular mission, which was probably going to be her greatest challenge yet. And just as the case with days marked on the calendar, time passed inexorably like it always did, and the day arrived.

Nita had headed to the waiting area of the guild hall, dressed a lot more modestly than she normally would, for the only reason that the mission was going to be staged in Iceberg, and even though she was sure that she could cope in her usual choice of attire, thanks to the optimum physical condition that her powers provided her, cold did have the habit of casting lethargy on the muscles, and Nita was not interested in even the slightest disadvantage. Still, she wouldn’t appear as though she was dressed for winter, except for the large thick overcoat she had draped over her shoulder. Finding an inconspicuous corner in the room in which to wait, and one that faced the doors of the waiting area, Nita seated herself at a table and kept her gaze on the door, after she had told those at the reception that she was expecting a visitor. She did not wait for up to a minute before someone walked in, immediately gaining the attention of everyone in the room. Nita did not have to be told that that was one of the Gods of Ishgar who had just stepped in. She gulped quietly. Alongside the woman was a wolf, most definitely Serilda’s companion. Nita had seen wolves before, but she had never seen any of the sort. She rose, just as the person whom Serilda accosted pointed in her direction. As her green and cerulean eyes met the icy blue of Serilda’s, the young Pergrandian paused, or more correctly, froze. Not because she was scared, but because of the renewed realization that she had the attention of one of the most prominent mages of Fiore, possibly Ishgar. Then she realized her mouth was agape, and vanished from sight, reappearing in front of Serilda, in a burst of shadow and brightly glowing runes.

”Hiiii!” she said half-cheerily, half nervously, and then paused. Shit, she was making a fool of herself. This was a soldier, and soldiers always seemed to be stoic and measured. She couldn’t remember how many times she had cursed the day she had absorbed the Primordial’s essence far away in Pergrande, but she had that occasion to blame for her apparent flightiness. She had been so much more capable of keeping herself in check before that incident. And yet, to be fair, if the incident had never occurred, perhaps she would never have had the opportunity such as this to work with one of the Gods of Ishgar, and leader of the Rune Knights, no less. ”Uh, sorry. I mean, it’s an honor to meet such an illustrious personage as yourself, ma’am. I am the one you’re looking for. Call me Nita. It’s much shorter and more convenient than ‘Fortunita’. I’m ready to depart when you are, ma’am.”

It calls us back to who we truly are.
It wouldn’t take long for her mission companion to show herself. The person behind the counter pointed toward where Fortuna was approaching, Serilda’s gaze turning to meet a pair of mismatched colored eyes. The woman was paused in her tracks, staring at the field marshal for a moment with her mouth open. Fortunately for the Luminous Rose mage, Serilda was accustomed to people occasionally acting odd around her due to her status, so she was able to maintain an even expression even as the woman disappeared and rematerialized in front of her with a cheery, if somewhat giddy, greeting. Serilda could see the woman visibly check herself as she tried to reign herself back, apologizing and speaking to the Goddess of Conviction a bit more formally.

After only a brief moment, Serilda’s blank expression broke to allow for the tinies of smiles. “A pleasure to meet you, Nita,” she replied, offering a firm handshake. “Please, call me Serilda. My wolf here is Xiuhcoatl.”

Once introductions were over, Serilda took a brief glance around to make sure no one nearby seemed to be listening in before turning back to Nita with a somber expression and speaking again in a hushed tone. “As I’m sure you’re aware, things are tense across Ishgar. What we are about to do is going to violate a lot of international laws during a time of declared war. Considering my status as leader of the Rune Knights, as a Fioren noble, and as a God of Ishgar… it goes without saying that this is an incredibly dangerous mission, politically speaking. It is imperative that we not be caught. If I am identified, the consequences could be catastrophic.”

More than anything, Serilda did not want to make the state of the world worse. Unfortunately, there were lives to save, and she knew that if she tried to seek out an exception from Iceberg for a border pass it would be denied, as the barbarians of the frozen wastelands would not view this rescue mission as a viable reason to cross the border. She would still wind up having to sneak in anyway, and all she would have done in the meantime was waste time. The field marshal would rather just get in and get out as quickly as possible, so she could get back to Mythal and their daughters, and back to the political cluster fuck that she was doing her best to try to resolve.

We should get moving, Victoria said, the old woman’s voice sounding within Serilda’s head. The nephilim with whom Serilda shared a soul, an immortal that was half demon half angel, was eager to press onward. While Victoria was fascinated and invested in the bureaucratic unrest throughout Ishgar, even she needed a break from the doom and gloom – something they had been experiencing a lot of lately, even before the tragedy of Joya. A crisp jaunt through the tundras of Iceberg would do the trick to shake things up a little. Serilda admitted to herself that she likely needed the change of pace as well.

Serilda continued on. “Anyway… I can get us inside the country undetected. From there we’ll just need to do our best to stay out of sight as much as possible. Shouldn’t be too difficult since they don’t have to many large cities, but if we sense any nomads nearby be warned in advance that I may disguise myself.” Presuming that was settled, the field marshal turned and extended a single hand. The air before them began to ripple like waves on a pond as a nearly invisible portal opened up just beyond the reach of her fingers, the space shimmering ever so gently with a faint dusting of starlight. With one final glance at Nita to make sure she was ready, Serilda led the way through the gateway and to the frozen landscape that awaited them beyond.

Despite the fact that she wasn’t wearing a jacket or really anything heavier than a long sleeve shirt, she seemed unbothered by the sudden change in temperature and atmosphere. If anything, Serilda could feel herself becoming invigorated with energy. The two women were presently surrounded by ice, snow, wind, and frost, the four elements which Serilda could control and consume as a slayer. She took a moment to survey the land around them for several hundred meters, her Void Sense reaching out to touch the world as she sought to confirm if there was anyone nearby. Thankfully, all she sensed were various animals native to the land. Xiuh lifted her nose and sniffed the air carefully, doing her own scan for any potential threats, her thick long coat keeping her warm though it was quickly becoming stuck with bits of snow.

Raising her face to the sky, she checked the position of the sun. “We’re still a little ways off from the coordinates we were given, but from here it should be a straight shot east.” Once Nita was ready, she would start walking in the direction of their destination. Seeing as how they had at least a short trip to go, and there was no one else around them, Serilda feld safe at least engaging in conversation with her companion for the time being. If anyone or anything came there way, she would sense their presence through the Void before they got close enough to be a concern. “So, how are you enjoying Luminous Rose? I regret that I haven’t had much of a chance to learn much about your guild since its inception. Things have been a bit hectic for me the last year or so. If my memory serves me, your members are dedicated to increasing your strength for the betterment of yourselves and your surroundings. Is that correct?”

Finding the Lost Empty Re: Finding the Lost

Post by Fraag 17th February 2022, 1:11 pm

Nita was quite sure that she had fallen lower in the eyes of her partner on this most important quest, when she noticed the fleeting, minuscule but present smile on Serilda’s face. The Pergrandian took the proffered hand, noting the firmness of the Rune Knight’s handshake. Well, it was to be expected from someone such as the Field Marshal of the Rune Knights. It seemed impossible to imagine someone with a more flighty behavior as the head of the elite militaristic group that guarded Fiore with a passion. Of course, there were most definitely people who were charismatic enough to be able to pull such a thing off, but Nita was not so confident that she fell into such a category. She turned her eyes to Serilda’s beautiful companion and nodded at the wolf with a smile. Of course, while first impressions often lasted rather long, they were not always accurate, and Nita’s first impression was that Serilda Sinclair was a hard woman. Still, the guild master obviously had her heart in the right place, with her statuses of leader of the Rune Knights and Goddess of Fiore speaking unworded volumes on her behalf. Perhaps it was personal rectitude of Serilda’s that made the Luminous Rose mage uninclined to try to prank her, as she tended to normally attempt on people who seemed so stiff. Besides, whether she was aware of it or not, Nita wanted to impress her partner, and Serilda did not seem the sort to be amused by practical tricks.

As Serilda glanced around, Nita immediately understood that it was business time. No one was close enough to eavesdrop; even someone with Slayer enhanced senses would have to still be a telepath of sorts in order to hear what the white-haired woman was saying to her blonde partner. Of all people, Nita was very much aware of the political matters in Ishgar, being somewhat personally invested in the matter, thanks to her apparently divided loyalties as Pergrandian by origin and yet a mage of Fiore. She especially understood the importance Serilda placed on not being recognized. As a very popular figure across the continent, not just in Fiore, chances were very real that a random passerby could easily identify the Field Marshal just by looking at her. And since Iceberg, a long standing ally of Pergrande, was thus contrary to Fiore interms of political alignment, Serilda was, in every sense of the word, crossing into enemy lines, in order to save the lives of endangered people, who politically were her enemies as well. Yep, if Nita respected her then, the regard she had for the Ice Queen had increased even more. ”Noted,” the Pergrandian replied. ”While I’m certain I personally might not need them, disguises can never be overrated. Now, let’s go break some rules!” Okay, that last part may not have been the most perfect thing to say, but they were actually going to break some rules, weren’t they? Nita thought it was most productive to not get beat up over such things.

As Serilda created the portal to lead the questers into Iceberg, Nita thought of how it was apparently more… ergonomic, for lack of a better word, than her own. Hers involved a bit of swimming, literally, which many would probably not find comfortable. It was also pretty to look at. Nita was sure her portals looked, at the very least, ominous, but she was probably so used to them by now that they didn’t bother her. Serilda’s portal was also impressive in that if one didn’t pay attention, they would miss it. Which would be great for wherever they had to pop out of, though given Iceberg’s population density and the inclemency of its all year round weather, it was not too likely that they would emerge in any area with a reasonable amount of people in it. Still, it wasn’t always Iceberg that people would have to teleport to from time to time. Nita followed the snow haired mage through the portal, and emerged into a cold, pale, stark landscape. The wind was blowing, but not strongly enough to create a blizzard or make hearing difficult. Still, cold was worse when the wind blew strong, and even though Nita was sure she could have survived without the thick winter coat she wore, she was glad that she had brought it along. It would be a little difficult for someone who had grown up in warmer climes to be able to determine the time of day, and thus the cardinal points from the sun’s position in the sky, but Pergrande was nothing, if not cold, and as such, Nita was able to easily deduce how far along the day had gone, and the direction east, where the mission coordinates lay, according to Serilda. It was good that the sun was quite visible, so they would not run the risk of straying off their intended direction without the aid of a compass, if the sky had been overcast. Nita nodded at her companion, and the trek through the cold lands began.

Frankly, the Pergrandian was surprised that Serilda seemed interested in knowing a bit more about her. Surprised, but not at all displeased. She turned to look at Serilda, then smiled and shrugged, before turning back to look ahead with the smile still on her face. ”Well, it’s fun. Gives a lot of room for flexibility and growth without too many restrictions. I’d never had issues with regimented society until….” there was a pause as the smile turned a bit sad. ”Well, let’s just say the freedom is great for me now.” There was another pause. ”Ah, I don’t mean that discipline and order are wrong, but to each their own, yes? In any case, the answer to your question about our guild would be a yes. We seek to grow stronger for the major purpose of protecting those who can’t protect themselves and to shine as beacons of hope, so that people may fear the darkness less and aspire to be greater for the good of themselves and their societies. We won’t stop until we’re the strongest there is! I’d probably have joined the Rune Knights because of the selfless ways you put yourselves out to protect the people of Fiore from dark mages and other criminal forces. But…” she chuckled, ”I wouldd probably have gotten court martialed countless times for uniform infractions.”

Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
Luckily, Serilda’s partner seemed to understand the importance of making sure that the Field Marshal’s presence remain unnoticed during their foray into enemy lines. Nita expressed that she was not in as much of a need for discrepancy, but as far as she was concerned one could never be too prepared, and she ended her reply by excitedly declaring that it was time to break a few rules. The white haired noble woman only blinked at Nita for a moment before her slight smirk returned, this time a touch deeper and more wry than her previous one. “Indeed. I suppose that is the gist of what we are doing. Doubt my fiance is going to let me live it down, either.”

Shaking her head, she opened the portal and they were off, both women being solidly deposited in the frozen wastes of Iceberg. They had a bit of a trek to get closer to their destination and in the meantime, since they were well out of earshot of anyone else, Serilda felt it wouldn’t hurt to get to know her companion a little. After all, there was a very real possibility that they would be engaged in combat beside one another that day, so the more they could do to be comfortable and trusting of one another the better as far as she was concerned. So she elected to ask Nita bit about her guild as an ice breaker – pun intended – and while her gaze remained on their surroundings she listened attentively to the woman’s response.

Nita shrugged a little before smiling and admitting Luminous Rose had been a fun guild to be a member of so far. They were given the freedom to act as they saw fit without too many restrictions, and there was a somber pause as the woman was on the cusp of speaking toward a more delicate topic before she simply glossed over the details and told her that liberty was a blessing she wasn’t taking for granted. Serilda nodded her understanding without prying for any details She had dealt with enough slaves and people in similarly cruel and indentured lifestyles to recognize when someone was hinting at having a similar past. The Sinclair noble family was a bit infamous among Fioren royalty for their stance against slavery and tyranny. Hell, even Serilda’s future sister-in-law Mercury had only herself just been freed from a lifetime of cruelty and fear and bondage, something none of them had been aware of until only a few weeks prior.

The blonde seemed to think that she was implying that laws and order were a chore and quickly corrected herself, though in truth Serilda hadn’t taken her comment that way. After all, Luminous Rose was a legal guild so certainly they followed at least the most basic guidelines for contributing to society rather than being menaces. From there, Nita confirmed that Serilda’s summary of the guild’s goals was more or less correct, its members seeking to improve their strengths in order to better their chances at helping society prosper. She admitted that she may have joined the Rune Knights due to their focus on hunting dark mages and protecting the people, but most likely she would have been court martialed for dress code violations.

That got a short but genuine laugh from the Field Marshal as she walked, Xiuhcoatl trotting happily and obediently at her heels through the snow. “It’s possible, though that would really be dependent on which of our branches you joined. Our special operations forces are often tasked with working under cover, so they are rarely in uniform outside of formal functions. But for everyone else, yes I do tend to be pretty strict about the uniforms. As the military face of the country, it is important that we not just act with professionalism but present ourselves that way in all other aspects as well, lest we not be taken seriously by our enemies or even our allies.”

“I have to admit, there are some days I do miss being a guild mage, though,” she confessed. “I was a bit of a late bloomer when it came to my magic. I didn’t start showing signs of having magical abilities until about… Oh, maybe five or six years ago? At least, nothing anything easily recognizable. My goal was always to join the Rune Knights eventually, but once I learned I was a mage I adjusted my career path and joined Sabertooth first, hoping to hone my skills with them before entering the military. Sadly, I was only with them for a short while before the Rune Knights and the Magic Council were attacked in Era by a dark guild that managed to all but cripple the Knights. Myself and Mythal – my fiance, and the now Director of the Knights – both happened to be in the area and lended ourselves to the fight even though we were still just civilians and guild mages at the time. I guess we made an impression, because when the Council had to elect new authority I was put in charge of the entire army from the start. It wasn’t quite how I had pictured my enlistment, but here we are I suppose.”

The story, of course, was a lot more complicated than that… but considering that Serilda knew next to nothing about Nita and the woman was a complete stranger, she wasn’t about to get into all the political nuances from that day, nor share her and Mythal’s suspicions about the questionable morality of certain Council members. Instead, she decided to turn the discussion elsewhere. “Please don’t think me rude, but I couldn’t help but notice your accent. Are you from Pergrande?” Despite the fact that Pergrande was essentially an enemy nation for Fiore at the moment, Serilda’s question was posed more from a place of curiosity rather than wariness. “I’d be interested to hear your thoughts about the state of everything right now between Pergrande and Bellum, if you are willing to share them. It has been a very tedious and… tense... situation to navigate, to say the least. I hear a lot of comments from Fiorens and Bellians every day, but I don’t get too many opportunities to hear from Pergrandians that are citizens rather than political authorities.”

Finding the Lost Empty Re: Finding the Lost

Post by Fraag 3rd March 2022, 6:09 pm

The Pergrandian mage smiled when she heard Serilda’s short but actually amused laugh. She felt this was deserving of bonus points, for making the silver-haired woman laugh, though whatever these bonus points were supposed to do, she could not say. Maybe they would serve as reputation points. That was it! She would put it in her resume when she got home: Made the Field Marshal of the Rune Knights laugh. Yeah, that would most probably raise the value of her resume by leaps and bounds. Nita walked alongside Serilda, listening quietly as her companion recounted how she became the leader of the Rune Knights. It seemed as though the Field Marshal had already had her work cut out for her, and had followed her intention to join the military with unwavering determination. It wasn’t too strange to imagine the silver-haired woman as a Sabertooth mage before becoming a Rune Knight. And even though the manner of her becoming a Rune Knight was not at all what Serilda had expected, it had happened. In Nita’s opinion, there were four types of people: those who desired something and attained it, those who desired but did not attain, those who did not desire but attained, and those who did not desire, and did not attain. Of course, the most fortunate seemed to be the first and last categories, and the third category could discard what they had attained if they desired it… or not. Nita realized that some situations weren’t that simple. For instance, there could be a ruler who never wanted to inherit the throne, but due to politics, destiny, or some other iron-gripped bully of circumstance, had found themselves wearing the crown. And if they dropped the rulership, there would be war or some other terrible disaster that ensured they had to remain in their position to avert it. In the end, perhaps the apparently most unfortunate of the four categories was not so bad off. Because when looked at from a particular angle, one would realize that everyone in the first category (the most blessed of the lot, being those who desired and attained their desire) had, at some point in their lives been in the place Nita presently was: the place of desire without attainment.

If there was anything that had surprised the Luminous Rose mage, it was hearing that Serilda had come late into the use of her magic, a realization that made Nita’s eyes widen involuntarily. It was quite interesting to see that even the most dissimilar people were likely to have mutual meeting points. Nita herself was a relative newcomer to the field of magic, having been actually born without the ability to use it at all, just like the average Pergrandian. She wasn’t even an Esper, though she had actually hoped many times before that she was. Now she thought about it, the Pergrandians would say that the mental powers possessed by Espers was not magic, but Nita, having seen a little of all the things magic was capable of, was inclined to disagree. However, she was sure there would be no point arguing that matter with anyone. Still, she said nothing, just being content to listen, until Serilda accurately placed her accent and asked her if she was Pergrandian. Well, it wasn’t too unexpected. Someone as internationally famous as the Field Marshal would surely be well-traveled, and would have most certainly interacted many times with many world leaders and important members of society. At this point, Nita’s respect for Serilda grew even more, as she realized that there would be a lot of political juggling and hoop jumping that the snow-haired warrior would have to be managing. Nita wasn’t very convinced she would be able to bear the rigors of politics, but then, most people were stronger than they thought. In any case, Nita had no reason to not answer Serilda’s question, besides, from the latter’s expression and tone of voice, she merely seemed to ask out of curiosity, and there was a lot of wisdom that was revealed in seeking the opinions and views of those of a different persuasion than yours.

”It’s that obvious, huh?” the blonde mage said with a wistful smile. ”Well, really I must say that I’m quite frightened about the present state of the world. To put a few things in Perspective, most citizens of Pergrande, myself included, have been raised to be rather patriotic. I mean, I’d even joined the military, although my intention was more aimed at international diplomacy, rather than warfare itself. It had been my desire to end the hostilities between Bellum and my country, because the fighting claimed my parents, and a good number of people I know. There is nothing pleasant about war. Only the leaders have some degree of insulation from it, because they’re expected to command from the comfort and safety of home. While most Pergrandians believe our grievance with Bellum is justified, I don’t believe most of the common Pergrandians jumped for joy when they heard the declaration of war. From experience, a good number of folk living at the border are tired of war, but they hope Pergrande will win, because we have a lot of faith in our military might. I suppose it is why the government of Pergrande was so quick to declare war. I find it surprising though, because if anything, from the disaster at Joya, Pergrande seemed to come out of it better than Bellum did, as I heard in the news that the envoy of Bellum was assassinated in the crisis. And I personally believed that Bellum was going to be the one to bare fangs, only to hear Pergrande’s declaration of war on the news. I love my country but…” there was a pause, as Nita stopped walking, unconscious that she had stopped, as her pain-filled eyes stared out across the bleak vista of ice, snow and whispering winds around them, ”but I don’t know if I can take their side in this war. Even though Pergrande seems to be much less inclined now to punish magic users who side with them, and I am most desirous to re-ingratiate myself with my homeland, I cannot fight for a cause that deep down I have no ability to justify. But is the cause of Bellum right? The charter of the Luminous Covenant sounds fair and just, but in the thick of war, no one remembers fairness and justice.”

Nita suddenly realized she had been crying when she felt the cold more strongly on the rivulets of moisture on her face. She shook her head, hurriedly wiped her eyes with her sleeve with a sniff, and resumed walking. ”Sorry, I’m embarrassing myself, when there are more important things to do. We should keep moving.”

Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
It seemed that Nita was inclined to simply listen while Serilda did a bit more talking than she usually did. It was certainly a reflection on how hectic her life had been lately, that any reprieve from the rigors of political conflict was welcome, even in the ears of a complete stranger. She and Mythal certainly did their best to make some down time for one another to keep themselves sane, but even with the occasional dinner night out or giving themselves a few hours to relax it was difficult to keep from certain topics of conversation popping up. Between everything with Bellum, Pergrande, Joya, and dozens of other in between troubles, as well as being new parents, they barely had much time to spend with their friends these days, either. Their only saving grace was Patricia, the engineer that was currently living with them under the protection of the two mages, who had really stepped up to make herself a veritable aunt and made quite a bit of effort to be more than just a passive long term guest.

So, it was nice to interact with a fresh face, one that wasn’t immediately involved in everything else that was going on around her. Not only that, but Nita was someone who had a connection to a nation that Serilda had less influence with, and while she did not wish to drag the woman into the politics she couldn’t let the opportunity pass her by to hear from a citizen of Pergrande and get some different perspective. As such, when it came Nita’s turn to talk, Serilda remained silent and attentive to her words to make sure she was doing more than just listening, but truly hearing what the woman would have to say.

With a wry smirk, the blonde woman admitted that she was afraid about the current events. As she explained, Pergrandians were raised from a very young age to be extremely patriotic, which was no surprise. Most people that knew anything about Pergrande’s history knew that most of their people were very enthusiastic about their beliefs. Nita explained that she had even joined the military at one point, though her aim was slightly adjacent to the methods of the rest of the nation’s army. She had wanted to help end the bad blood between them and Bellum due to how the hostilities had claimed a number of people that she loved and cared for over the years and it had brought her to the conclusion that war was not going to fix anything. That went doubly when the leaders of her unit often sent the lower ranking soldiers into the thick of the fray and avoided it themselves – along with the consequences of their decisions.

Serilda frowned in distaste at that knowledge. The noblewoman was unfortunately in the minority when it came to that kind of thing. She had been raised to be the type of leader that commanded with respect, not fear or arrogance. Even before Serilda had taken over the Rune Knights, she had carried out her noble duties alongside those under her care and protection, getting her hands dirty and undertaking quite a bit of grunt work where most other dignitaries in her position would turn up their noses and scoff at the mere thought of “lowering” themselves to such a level. And while she was well aware that she and the rest of her family did not handle commoners the same way that most other nobles did, it still disappointed and angered her to know that it wasn’t the norm.

As Nita explained, the vast majority of Pergrande viewed their stance against Bellum as justified, but even then she didn’t exactly feel that the day to day citizens were exactly eager for an all out war. In fact, she felt that most of the people that lived along the border were exhausted from the decades and centuries of tension that had already been present before the official war had been declared. Still there was hope that Pergrande would win, as they were a proud people that believed in the strength of their military. What struck the woman as curious, however, was how quickly Pergrande had been leaning further into hostilities when in fact it had been Bellum that had suffered the greater loss.

There was a weighty pause as the woman put some thought to her words before admitting that she wasn’t sure if she could side with her country, as much as she loved her heritage. There was some growth on Pergrande’s side when t came to mages that had proven themselves to be earnest allies, but at the end of the day she simply did not see a point to the continued conflict and could not in good conscience condone it. At the same time, that didn’t mean she was on Bellum’s side of things either. Serilda’s companion began to shed a few silent tears, reaching up to wipe them away before apologizing. “There is nothing you need to apologize for, Nita. Our current mission may be of more immediate urgency, but this conflict is one of the most important events of our time, and it should be viewed as such. If anything, I should apologize; it was an insensitive question. I am sincerely sorry. I did not mean to make you upset… but I do appreciate your honesty. It has given me valuable insight.”

Regardless of apologies, it was an appropriate time to let the subject drop, and as such Serilda did not pursue further dialogue on the matter. The pair walked a bit further as the field marshal contemplated the Pergrandian’s words until her thoughts were interrupted by movement a couple hundred meters out. Xiuhcoatl stopped, the large wolf raising her snout to the air and sniffing it before letting out a low growl. Serilda, too, stopped to peer in the distant direction where the wolf was eying. Focusing her magic, she sharpened her Void sense to pinpoint the movement that was heading their direction, using her abilities to feel the shape of it. “We are being hunted,” she told Nita. “A large feline of some kind.” While a natural predator wasn’t exactly ideal, it was far better than running into other people out here.

Not wanting to waste her magical energy, Serilda withdrew the scimitars that were sheathed on either side of her hip. One was silver in color that glowed with an ethereal blue light. The other was as black as night, almost seeming to soak up the light around it. If Nita were capable of sensing such things, she may also notice that the first sword had a strong holy aura while the other was reeking of demonic power, the two blades practically antitheses of one another in every way. “Here it comes.” No sooner had Serilda given the warning than a snow leopard leapt out from behind some brush and charged them head on, aiming to make a meal out of whichever one it could get its paws on first.

Finding the Lost Empty Re: Finding the Lost

Post by Fraag 13th March 2022, 9:29 pm

While Serilda had seen her question as an insensitive one, given Nita’s emotional response, the Pergrandian mage did not feel that this was the case. If anything, the Field Marshal’s question had made her internally face a question she had been personally avoiding ever since the Bello-Pergrandian War had begun in earnest. And while many people liked to prioritize comfort over many other things, it was neither comfort that got the job done when something needed doing, nor did comfort get anyone far in life, unless said person had been shielded and spoilt all their days, and expected to exist in such a state until they died. The difficult question of where she stood in the war had been triggered by a question of identity. And Nita had realized, and now understood that she would have to figure out who, or what she truly was, in order to be ready for the future. Because she had had that premonition for a long time now, that she would eventually find herself on the field of battle, whether she desired it or not, and most times, when Nita had premonitions or gut feelings that something bad was going to happen, she wasn’t wrong. The details were never what she expected, though. Facing the question of who she was and where she stood now meant that when the question arose again, she would have a ready answer for it. For such questions arose unsought for, and at times when mental fortitude was most needed. Being unprepared could be disastrous, fatal even.

”It wasn’t you that made me upset,” Nita replied with a smile. ”I’ve had my own internal battles for a while. Your question reminded me that I need to sort myself out on time. You have my thanks, Serilda.” The two mages trudged in silence through the snow, until Nita detected Xiuh stop, sniff the air, and begin to growl. There was definitely movement; something was slinking around, hunting them, as Serilda stated. The Rune Knight then drew two swords from their sheaths, and prepared for battle. Nita took a moment to observe the swords, while her psychic sense kept tracking the beast as it tried to circle them so that they would be downwind of it. She liked the shape and feel of the silver one; it reminded her a little of her magic, to which she was beginning to get used to. The other sword, not so much. It felt a little uncomfortable, but certainly not anything strong enough to bother her. It did remind her of her giant sword, Sirius, when the blade was in Godslayer mode. As though in response to Serilda’s preparation for battle, Nita squatted and gathered snow in her hands, compacting the droplets of frozen water to make a snowball. Then she rose and prepared herself, looking as serious as she could afford, as though she had a dangerous weapon in her hand.

And then came the cat, just as Serilda issued her warning. Snow leopard, its white fur coat useful for granting it natural camouflage in this frozen terrain. It flung itself at the two mages, snarling and extending its claws. Nita responded by flinging the snowball into its face. Normally, such a flimsy missile was meant to just spatter against the snarling leopard, and in the worst case scenario, temporarily impede its vision. However, this was not the case. The snowball struck the cat with unnatural force, enough to kinetically stop its midair approach, as if it had been smacked with something heavy that had absorbed the kinetic energy of its jump. It twitched a bit where it had fallen, and then remained still. Of course, a snowball could not have stopped the leopard in flight, much less kill it. Nita had used her Divine Arms spell, which had the technical advantage of requiring no magic power to cast, making it very efficient in battle, especially in one in which there was no known duration of time in which hostilities were expected, and as such, conservation of energy was the wisest course of action. ”It might be profitable to skin this thing and make a loincloth out of its pelt,” the Pergrandian joked, poking the dead cat with her boot. Leopards hardly ever hunted in groups, so it was not likely that the cat’s tag team partner would be anywhere about, or show up any time soon.

Wolves, however, were a different matter. A distant howl carried on the wind, and a closer one answered it. The wolves were closing in gradually. Soon, the grey coats of the wild dogs would be seen, as they warily tried to surround the mages, snarling as they did so. ”It seems the creatures here are rather hungry,” the Pergrandian said with a sigh and a shake of the head. ”Why can’t you guys be like Xiuhcoatl here? I blame this on very poor home training. You should be ashamed of yourselves.” Of course, whether the wolves understood or not, they didn’t seem to care about good behavior and its rewards. Meat would be a sufficient reward for them this evening. A reward that they would very likely not have. Certain that Serilda would not need any assistance, Nita stood so that she was back to back with the Field Marshal. This way, there would be no incoming attacks from behind, although even those were made much less effective by the powerful senses of the two mages. A big grey brute with snapping claws lunged at her, and she simply kicked it in the side of its head, the attack strong enough to break its neck. Another tried and suffered the same fate, as did the next two which tried to attack at the same time. After a few minutes of the wolves failing spectacularly to succeed in their hunt, the animals suddenly stopped for a moment, then broke off, fleeing. And the reason for their escape was just as easily sensed as it was seen: two huge primates in white shaggy coats traversing the landscape with speed, charging towards the mages, their eyes bloodshot with rage, and fangs bared.

”Apes! Of all things, it just had to be apes! I refuse to take this seriously,” Nita said, though her battle-ready stance betrayed that she was not being truthful about tackling the ape problem with due diligence.

Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
Serilda was keenly aware of Nita as the guild mage gathered up a ball of snow from the ground, and while it was certainly strange the voidwalker didn’t put too much thought into it. After all, there was an infinite number of magics in the world that did all sorts of odd things, and perhaps Nita had some kind of ability to control snow like Serilda did. She would not have to wait long for confirmation on that assumption, for as soon as the leopard jumped out into the open, the blonde mage hurled the snowball at it with such force that the creature dropped dead in one hit like a baseball pegging a bird in flight. “Nice shot,” Serilda said, easing up her stance for the moment and approaching the carcasse while the other woman tapped it with her boot. “It does feel wasteful to just leave it here.. But it’s not worth the time or effort. Consider it a free meal for other animals in the area that might otherwise have a difficult time finding food in this climate.”

As if that were a cue, a group of wolves in the distance let out a howl, causing Xiuh’s ears to perk up in a mixture of interest and wariness. The creatures were already close enough that it would do no good to try and avoid them. They already had their scent and would continue to track them, even in this weather. So instead the two women squared off against one another’s back so as to be able to address the wolves when they arrived on all sides, with Xiuh crouched low beside Serilda, a loud growl of warning rumbling from her throat toward her distant kin. Despite the aggressive intentions of the pack, Serilda didn’t really wish to hurt them. Much like the leopard, they were merely innocent creatures trying to survive in a harsh environment, and given that Serilda had grown up with a mother that raised wolves for a living, the voidwalker admittedly had a bit of a soft spot for them.

Unfortunately, the beasts weren’t giving her much of a choice. As the creatures attacked, Serilda moved swiftly, unhindered by the snow at her feet as she deftly ducked and danced around the clearing to avoid the wolves’ snapping jaws, piercing them through one at a time with precise strikes of her blades that put the canines out of commission one at a time. Xiuh did her part as well, lashing out at the other wolves if they got too close to Serilda and keeping the pack back. The fight lasted only a couple minutes before the wolves broke off and ran at the knowledge of an approaching predator, which drew Serilda’s attention immediately. There wasn’t much out there that wolves would be so easily intimidated by, but a quick glance was all it took to see the two large primates charging their way.

This was just getting ridiculous. They had a job to do and fighting off all the wildlife in the area was going to take far more time than they had to spare. With a grim expression, Serilda released her hold on Malice, the black sword continuing to hover in the air besides her as the voidwalker reached out a hand toward the approaching vulcans. Taking control of the empty spaces between the atoms of each creature, Serilda commanded them to expand and push away from one another. The resulting effect was that both of the vulcans exploded instantly into a mist of bloody viscera, their bodies torn apart on a molecular level before the creatures could even process the ending of their lives.

“My apologies,” the noblewoman relayed to her companion as she once more took Malica back in hand and relaxed her posture. “I don’t mean to be so violent, but we can’t afford to have our time wasted like this.” The longer the expeditioners had to wait out for rescue in this climate, the less likely they would be to survive – assuming they hadn’t already died in whatever attack their client had heard before communications with the team had been lost. They needed to get moving if there was any hope of finding their charges alive. Taking only a moment longer to make sure neither Nita nor Xiuh had sustained any major injuries, they once again continued along their route toward the last known coordinates of the group.

After a little while longer of traversing the lands, they came across the spot where the expeditioners had lost contact with their home base. Much of the evidence of the battle had already been covered by a thick layer of snow, but not enough to completely hide the scene. There were spots of blood and destroyed and abandoned equipment laying haphazardly about. Unfortunately, there were also a couple of bodies. “Damn,” Serilda swore softly as she got to work trying to uncover as much as they could.

By the time they could gather all the evidence together, there were a total of four corpses laid out before them. Serilda could only frown at the bodies in thought. “Where is everyone else?” While finding four dead bodies wasn’t a good sign, it wasn’t even half of the research party that had been sent into Iceberg. Even more concerning was the fact that the wounds on the victims, which had been perfectly preserved thanks to the cold, were not consistent with natural predators like Nita and Serilda themselves had fought not so long ago. “What the hell killed these poor people..?” Their bodies looked as though they had been crushed beneath the weight of something large and heavy, and the bludgeoning pattern was not consistent with anything that Serilda had ever encountered before.

    It is time, Serilda.

The noblewoman’s frown increased tenfold, her nose wrinkling with disgust. It’s just so fowl, she informed the Seal in half-assed protest.

Be that as it may, you cannot continue to deny the powers you received from me, nor can you continue to behave like a child. I will no longer continue to perform this task for you. It is something you need to learn to do yourself. Like it or not, you are a blood mage, and the abilities you inherited will aid you. Do you wish to save these people or not?

Serilda hated when Victoria was right. With a resigned sigh, Serilda knelt beside one of the recovered corpses. “Please forgive me, Nita. This is going to be… well, disgusting.” Pressing a couple fingers to one of the wounds on the body beside her, Serilda gathered up some of the dried blood with her finger tips before raising the digits to her face. With only a long enough pause to visibly grimace about what she was about to do, the noblewoman placed the digits in her mouth and consumed the crimson plasma. All at once, images and visions came rushing through her mind as she sifted through the memories of the person that had been killed, looking for the most recent ones to provide an answer as to the cause of death.

When she finally found what she was looking for, the voidwalker slowly opened her eyes and looked down at the corpse with a piteous expression. “A frost giant,” Serilda said quietly before turning her gaze up to Nita. “These people were attacked by a frost giant.”

Finding the Lost Empty Re: Finding the Lost

Post by Fraag 17th April 2022, 8:02 pm

Although Nita could easily track what Serilda was doing with her heightened magical senses, she turned to look at the Field Marshal of the Rune Knights, when the latter released her black sword, which hung in the air, as though being held by a loyal vassal waiting to return the weapon to its mistress, or even use it in her defense. But it wasn’t the floating sword that Nita was most interested in. It was Serilda’s stance that informed the Pergrandian that something worth documenting was about to be revealed. And while an outstretched arm, with the fingers of its hand splayed in a given direction, seemed to be a worthy sign that a spell, most likely dramatic, was about to be cast, Nita sensed that her companion was more of the ‘no frills’, ‘less showing off’ sort. A dramatic gesture from a relatively undramatic person was bound to produce a spectacle for the annals. It was somewhat like a particularly serious person suddenly cracking a joke. Unless the joke cracker was extremely hopeless at delivering punchlines, the resultant joke would be sure to carry, along with the expected jollity, a sense of awe. Awe at seeing the unexpected, which was what Nita suspected was about to occur.

And it did. What were hulking, living, raging, savage masses of muscle and animalistic fury suddenly changed into a shower of guts, gore and garish grandeur. More spectacular than the Luminous Rose mage had expected, and while it did look rather messy, Nita was certain that it was a rather effective way of stopping the gigantic primates. ”Wow,” Nita said, awestruck by the sudden spectacle of carnage before her. ”Eww, but wow.” She grinned as Serilda apologized for the carnage and shook her head. ”No need to be worried about me. I’m above 18, so the sex, violence and strong language doesn’t need censoring.” Of course, she was just joking, comparing Serilda’s destruction of the Vulcans to movie ratings. No matter how old a person was, seeing such garish things could leave lasting scars on the mind. But in spite of Nita’s appearance, she had actually seen a lot; some things even worse than what Serilda had done to the two hapless apes. While there was really quite a lot of blood (and that was to be expected, given the large size of the Vulcans), Nita was quite understanding, and even approving of the swift massacre. Every second spent without rescuing the victims could result in more of them, if not all of them, dying. She was not sure she would easily forgive herself if there was no one to be saved by the time they found the missing expeditioners.

After gratefully affirming that she had not been injured in the wolf attack, Nita continued to tag alongside Serilda, as the two made their way to the campsite where communications had been last made with the home base. It was a mess. And a bloody one too. The Pergrandian mage’s heart sank as she studied the scene before her. But there was no time to mope; they had to figure out what exactly had happened, and on doing so, find out perhaps if there were any survivors. Nita helped Serilda with gathering the fallen, and Xiuh’s nose proved incredibly useful in the unpleasant but necessary exercise. There were four dead bodies here. Not enough. Perhaps what was most unsettling were the wounds borne by the corpses. It was almost as though something heavy had been dropped on them. Despite her initial flippancy at the mess Serilda had turned the Vulcans to, Nita realized that she could not stare at the corpses for long. Perhaps it was more of the fact that four human lives had been lost, and the Pergrandian suspected that it was more likely due to murder than accident.

Nita turned to look at the Goddess of Conviction who was apologizing for something the blonde mage could not yet identify. ”Why are you—oh…” she said, as she saw the Rune Knight taste the blood of the dead. Well, that was freaky, but Nita was sure she understood. She did after all have a form of scrying with which she could determine events that had happened in the future, and while it didn’t seem to be as visually bothersome as Serilda’s, it could get quite tacky when dealing with the dead, as was the case here. At least the bodies weren’t zombiefied. Nothing was worse than zombies. Nita stood silently, watching as Serilda stayed kneeling beside the corpse, eyes closed as though she were praying. Then the Field Marshal opened her eyes, a look of sorrow on her face, as she identified the cause of the deaths. A frost giant. It all became clear. These people had been trampled and smashed by the frost giant, and the rest that were missing had been probably taken away by the monster. Why the frost giant would leave the corpses here was a bit puzzling, but it suggested something to the Pergrandian. ”Your divination makes a lot of things much clearer, Serilda,” the blonde mage stated pensively, as she watched her companion. ” My suspicion is that the frost giant must have taken the other explorers from here to its lair, but it left these four bodies here because they were killed when it attacked the camp. Now I’m no expert in giant behavior and customs, but I suspect that in a land as cold as Iceberg, warm blood would be quite the commodity. With these four already slain, by the time the giant had returned to its lair, they would already be frozen. With the living, one can expect them to remain warm, but if I am correct, then they might already be lining the giant’s stomach. We need to know which way the giant went. I guess this is where I should prove useful.”

Unlike Serilda, Nita avoided the bodies, instead checking around the camp for apparently random pieces of debris. She found one that seemed suitable for her task, and picked it up, concentrating as her mind began to track its history, as she utilized her Aspect of Knowledge powers. ”A sword handle this is, obviously…” the young woman said as she frowned at the redundancy of her supposedly special ability telling her what a normal child could easily discern. But she still persisted. With sufficient concentration and patience, she would be able to step beyond the obvious, and draw out what was concealed by the murky mists of time. ”Ah!” She turned sharply in one direction, and stared out into the apparently bleak wasteland. ”This belonged to one of the dead. He was stationed for guard duty, then the giant came from the north… this is sickening.” She let the sword handle slip from her hands, as she turned to face Serilda. ”The giant went in a roughly north-northeast direction,” she said pointing. ”It came from that direction as well. Poxy bastard came during a wicked blizzard, so these poor fellows were practically blind to it until it attacked. Shall we set out? I guess we’ve found all we need here with which to continue, and the sooner we can get to deliver that giant its comeuppance, the safer our explorers might be. I just hope they’re all still alive.”

Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
Serilda truly was not one for great shows of power. Magic had its uses, of course, and there were often times where a display of might and bravado were appropriate, but overall that simply wasn’t who the woman was. On any other day, she would have preferred to handle the fight in a way that showed a bit more respect to her opponents, but the truth was that they simply did not have that luxury. The longer they were delayed, the less likely they were to find survivors. Every minute counted, and she could not afford patience, for their sakes. So she called upon the more crude and frightening aspects of her Voidwalking, tearing the vulcans apart atom by atom before the beasts even had a chance to act, and apparently leaving her companion in a state of awe.

Nita brushed off the apology, assuring Serilda that she was an adult, and as such things like sex, violence and strong language need not be restricted. If this interaction had occurred only a couple short years ago, the field marshal’s response might have been more rigid and diplomatic. The last several years, however, had brought a number of people into her life that had taught her how to loosen up without necessarily changing who she was. As such, there was the barest of smirks on her face as she used her magic to clean the gore off of her blades. “I prefer to avoid public displays of all three, when possible. With any luck, there will be no need for further violence – though if things go wrong, I am confident that a strong language advisory will be inevitable.” Her blue eyes flicked over to Nita with a brief but playful glance.

They carried on until they located the campsite and the massacre that awaited them there, the sight sucking the lighthearted humor out of them both. If Serilda noticed that the mage had a harder time observing the fallen humans than she had witnessing the destruction of the earlier vulcans, the Voidwalker didn’t comment on it. She understood. It was always different when it came to people. The only reason Serilda herself was handling it so seamlessly was just because she had, unfortunately, been desensitized to human death a long time ago. Not that it was ever easy, of course. She had simply mastered how to compartmentalize. She’d had to. As a police and military woman, death was a phenomenon that she was exposed to on a regular basis, and between the various skirmishes and full blown wars that she had been a part of since before she was a part of the Rune Knights, Serilda had long since lost count of how many people she’d had to kill in the line of duty.

It was only thanks to her lifetime of training in discipline that she was able to overcome her disgust for Victoria’s magic to do what needed to be done, and with a quick apology in advance to her partner, Serilda consumed the smallest amount of blood from one of the victims and filtered through their memories enough to discover what fate had befallen the camp: a frost giant. Nita gave brief consideration to the revelation, her mind clearly working toward determining their next steps in light of the news. She theorized – and Serilda agreed – that the remaining expedition members had likely been dragged off to whatever served as the beast’s home, which suggested that they were alive. Or at least, they had been after the initial attack. Otherwise, why would the beast have left behind ones that had died? It was highly likely that the giant saw an opportunity for warm blood and had elected to make the most of it. From there, whether or not there were still survivors would simply depend on the giant’s self control when it came to food.

It was vital that they know what direction the giant went, and sadly enough time had passed since the expeditioners were attacked that fresh snow had long since covered the tracks. Luckly, this was where Nita seemingly would be able to discern a heading for them. Serilda nodded in acknowledgement to Nita as the woman began to search for whatever it was she needed to perform the task she had in mind, watching the woman curiously out of her peripheral vision. At the same time, she used her magic to cast a small spell over the bodies of the victims they had found, banishing them to a temporary pocket of the Void where they would be easily reached by her upon their return to Fiore; their families deserved to have something to bury, after all. When that was completed, she gave her full attention to her partner, silently observing as Nita attuned to a blade plucked from the rubble.

Using whatever magic trick the Luminous Rose mage had at her disposal, Nita was able to ascertain that the weapon had belonged to a member of the camp that had been on guard duty, who had witnessed the giant approaching from the north. Based on everything she saw, she believed their quarry had left in a general north to northeastern direction, having used the cover of a snowstorm to mask its approach until it was too late for the camp to defend itself. Serilda nodded. “It may have even caused the storm. I know little of frost giants as well, but it stands to reason that their names are derivative of magical capabilities, as much as their preferred climate.”

Nita suggested they continue on, eager to increase their chances to save as many lives as possible, and Serilda was in full agreement. They carried on for some number of miles, and the whole while Serilda kept her Void Sense stretched to its furthest reaches, searching for anything that might resemble the shape of a hulking frost giant. As long as they could get close enough to the right area, that was all she needed to pinpoint a more definitive destination. And sure enough, as they moved along she felt something along the distant edges of her senses that gave her pause. She came to a slow stop, turning her head to peer in the direction of a low mountain range to the east and focusing her magic out as detailed as she could get it.

“I may have something,” she informed Nita, a slight frown of consideration on her face. “There’s a lot of movement out there. Multiple creatures, but… their body mass seems to be made almost entirely of ice. Elementals of some kind, maybe? I’d dismiss it but beyond them, further up the mountain side, there is the opening of a very large cavern. Large enough for a giant, I am sure, though I don’t sense anything inside at the moment. The cavern extends beyond my senses. I’d have to get closer to see any further, and to do that we’d have to get past these other ice creatures…” Wordlessly, she looked over to Nita to get the woman’s thoughts on how they should proceed.

Finding the Lost Empty Re: Finding the Lost

Post by Fraag 7th August 2022, 8:00 pm

Even though Serilda managed to maintain her calm and graceful poise, the Rune Knight showed that she was not without a sense of humor. Nita mentally bumped the Field Marshal some rungs higher on whatever scaling of respect she had for the snow-haired woman. Although the realization that Nita had just insinuated that she was fine with seeing… improper happenings in public made the Pergrandian’s cheeks slightly flush. She’d simply used the ‘sex, violence and strong language’ as a metaphor for her being mature enough not to be bothered by the gore, and Serilda knew that, but the older woman’s response made Nita realize that she herself might seem somewhat lewd to the soldier. And even though Serilda seemed to be the sort of person not to judge others so superficially, the fact that, contrary to public opinion, Nita was a lot more innocent than she let on was the ironic twist here. She giggled nervously and rubbed the back of her neck. ”Ah, I most definitely agree with the private situation stipulations,” she attempted to clarify. Still, she saw the twinkle in Serilda’s eyes with the brief glance the Rune Knight cast her way. It was interesting how she’d been a little bit scared of this woman before now. True, given the Goddess of Conviction’s prowess in battle and her reputation, the Rune Knight deserved to be feared. But Nita was really beginning to like the person she really was.

Moving forward, with the two mages carefully examining the devastated camp site, and gathering the corpses of the slain, Serilda cast a spell on the bodies, and they vanished. Nita wasn’t too surprised, seeing as she was aware that her partner possessed powers that involved manipulation of the powers of the void, thanks to the transportation method that had gotten the two women to Iceberg. It was a good call, what Serilda did, seeing as the dead bodies would most likely be ravaged by prowling snow carnivores, if they were left behind. It was impressive to note that animals in the snow seemed to have even adapted teeth for tearing frozen meat off bone. It would be very unlikely to find the corpses, by the time they returned. But the fact that the mages had met corpses unbothered as of yet by the local fauna was a good thing, because it indicated that the frost giant’s murder of the unfortunate individuals in the camp had been recent. The suggested likelihood of the frost giant having caused the storm did make a lot more sense, given that not only would the storm have easily hidden the approach of the giant, but it would have also made following by conventional tracking methods a problem. Nita had to admit that she felt proud of her magic in times like this.

In any case, now was not the time to gloat. People needed saving. Even though the general direction of the frost giant’s departure was known, its exact location was not. It would probably take a bit of time to locate the monster, especially if the creature may have decided to change direction for whatever reason. It would not be above the beast to do so, seeing that the frost giant did seem intelligent, much more than the average hunter that roamed the frigid icescapes of the land of the Vikings. The trek through the snowy wastes resumed, and though the two mages and the wolf moved rather quickly, for a bit of time there seemed to be nothing of note to be had. Nita kept her senses peeled, but there seemed to be nothing but wind and snow for miles in all directions. Until Serilda slowed down. Give the Rune Knight’s effective nature, she was not stopping in vain; she had found something. Nita followed the direction of the Marshal’s gaze to the chain of mountains lying eastward. According to Serilda, things were moving in the distance. Probably ice elementals. That sounded dangerous. Even though these creatures were more spirit than flesh, that did not make them any friendlier than the Vulcans that had been encountered some time ago. To get past them, there would definitely be another battle, but it was one that had to be fought. Nita waited until Serilda was done talking, then she nodded. ”Get closer we must,” she replied. ”But I suspect that presently we may have the element of surprise, given that the ice elementals would probably have been on their way to attack us by now if they were aware of our presence. We should try to creep closer and get an idea of their numbers, then ambush them. If we can take them out all at once, that would be great. If we cannot, an ambush will give us a much needed advantage in the battle to come.”

So saying, Nita began moving in the direction of the mountain range, trying to maintain speed while moving stealthily. She had no idea whether the ice elementals had senses analogous to mammals, or if they were even mammals for that matter. It was very likely that they would be something she had never encountered before, so it was best to be as prepared as possible. Her plan was not to come as close as possible, but to approach until she was able to get a reading on how many there were. It seemed that there were six of them. And if she had expected them to be strange, she was not disappointed. Like snowflakes, no two of them were the same. Ranging from anthropomorphic forms to floating chunks of crystals in the air, they just seemed to be idly milling about, doing nothing. Nita drew a black card, which summoned to little white guns, before turning to Serilda. ”I think attacking from two different angles will be strategically advantageous. I’ll change direction to a few hundred meters to the north, and start sniping at them. They’ll most likely move in my direction, which will give you the time and space to launch your own attack from another direction. Two ambushes at once, if I may say so. If any more still remain after our initial assault, it’s lasers blazing time.”

Waiting to hear Serilda’s thoughts about the ambush, Nita selected a position that seemed advantageous to her purpose. Then using her Misere spell, she teleported some distance to an outcropping or rock to the north. Her little derringers transformed into a hi-tech sniper rifle, as she laid flat on the rock and took aim at the biggest elemental. With the lay of the land, unless anyone was looking for her, it would not be very likely that they would see her, at least until she fired. And her sniper was designed to be quiet, so they wouldn’t be able to initially tell the direction of her attack from sound alone. The young Pergrandian took careful aim as she exhaled, lining up her target within the scope of her firearm. Then she pulled the trigger. There was a faint plink, and a small erosion of snow erupted from the creature’s head. A perfect headshot. It was still alive, though. The elementals immediately whipped themselves into a frenzy, as they sought their hidden attacker, who aimed another shot.

Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
If it was ice elementals – and Serilda was fairly confident that it was – it would be interesting trying to fight them. A large portion of her magic was ice based, and she imagined that the elementals would have resistances to ice and cold much like she did. Perhaps she could still over power them, but she suspected that her cold magic would be of little use outside of protecting herself. Either way, Nita was right: They had surprise on their side and it would be a mistake to not use it.

With a nod of agreement, Serilda changed course alongside Nita and the pair began to make their way toward the elementals as quickly as they could without drawing attention to themselves. Thankfully, the snow hid much of the noise they made while moving. The Voidwalker put a bit of focus into sensing the shape and makeup of the elementals as they got closer. They were all vastly different from one another in form, but all of them were composed of a thick ice that Serilda had never encountered before. It felt strange to her senses. What do you think, Victoria?

She could feel the thoughtful frown of the Seal within her mind. I’m not sure. This ice is peculiar. The logical choice would seem to be fire, but… my instincts tell me it won’t be as simple as that.

Serilda’s attention flicked to Nita as the woman summoned a couple firearms and suggested a two front ambush, with her taking a spot a few hundred meters out to serve as a distraction while Serilda swooped in to deliver some punishing blows. With any luck that would be enough to take them all out, but if not then surely they would be able to handle the rest in due time. “Very well. Let’s give it a shot.” As Nita used some of her magic to teleport away, Serilda quietly moved in closer, Xiuh hot and silent at her heels. The princess would wait until her companion opened fire and drew the attention of their foes toward herself, and then she stepped out into the open behind them.

    “Xiuhcoatl: Flamme!”

The wolf planted its feet and howled. Suddenly, its fur began to glow with the yellowy-white hot light of a star and a coating of fire cloaked the creature, the bright flames flicking to and fro in the wind. Utilizing her Void magic, Serilda scooped up the fire into a twisting cyclone and hurled it at the nearest couple of elementals, who had stopped in their tracks to turn in surprise at the secondary attack. The inferno swallowed two of the elementals and Serilda held the fire in place. She could feel that the creatures were, at the very least, incapacitated while being consumed by the flames, but something felt wrong. She couldn’t feel them diminishing.

After a moment, Serilda dismissed the spell and allowed the fire to fade away, and sure enough the creatures were still whole. They had not melted even the slightest bit. She grit her teeth and growled lightly in annoyance. If they weren’t susceptible to fire, then she was just going to have to shatter them. Once more she reached out with her Voidmagic, seeking purchase for the space between the molecules of their bodies, only to be stumped when she found none. The ice of their forms was so tightly compacted that there wasn’t even the faintest sliver of a crack that she could force a wedge of space between. It was baffling and unprecedented, and if Serilda had any less discipline she would have stood there entirely flummoxed long enough to give the enemy an opening. Thankfully, she had been through much tougher training than that. If she couldn’t destroy them with her Voidwalking then she would simply try to bludgeon them to death.

Three elementals rushed her, the two she had attacked and one that had been nearby. Serilda used her swords to fend off two of them while one attempted to go after the wolf. Xiuh’s flames were enough to at least keep the creature at bay, but it was little more than a stalemate. The field marshal’s swords were useless against the elementals as well, even with magical enhancement. Serilda’s gaze panned around as she sought for anything that could be of use until her eyes lit upon a boulder buried halfway into the ground. Perhaps the answer was something less sophisticated than magic? She had no other options, so it was time to try something more rudimentary.

    “Maze!”

A woman materialized in the area at Serilda’s behest. Mazikeen was dressed in what could best be described as street fighting garments, with dark flesh and long dreads with beats in them. “What you need, boss?”

    “Just keep them busy!”

“Can do!” Almost in perfect synchronization, Serilda created an opening to slip away from the elementals even as Maze shoehorned herself into the spot that Serilda had just left, taking over the fight in a flurry of martial prowess.

From there, Serilda flew up a few dozen feet into the air where she hovered out of immediate melee range and could focus on the task at hand. Reaching out with the Void, she took hold of the boulder and yanked it out of the ground, high up into the sky. With one hand raised up toward the rock to hold it in place, her other hand stretched out to the crater it had left behind. Serilda ripped all the empty space out from between the molecules of the ground, widening the hole slightly as it compressed tightly together and the surface was hard as a diamond. Then, she did the same to the boulder itself, the rock shrinking until there was no space left between the atoms that formed it.

“Lead them to the crater!” Serilda watched and waited as Maze and Xiuh both maneuvered their way around the battlefield until they were standing in the crater with the three elementals around them. Then, with all of her might, she threw the hardened boulder back down to the ground with as much speed as she dared. Before it could hit the surface, she wrapped her magic around Maze and the wolf and pulled them out of the way. The boulder slammed into the ground directly on top of the three elementals, who were instantly flattened and shattered by the impact between the two hardened surfaces. The mountainside shook from the tremor that the impact caused, though thankfully Serilda had hardened the ground enough that it didn’t split and give way to the gigantic rock. And though the were too high up the mountain for it to really affect them, she could feel a couple small avalanches begin to roll down the hill below them and on some nearby peaks.

Confident, at least, that her elementals were handled, she snapped her gaze toward Nita to see if she needed assistance.

Finding the Lost Empty Re: Finding the Lost

Post by Fraag 8th September 2022, 8:12 pm

Serilda approved of Nita’s plan, which, in the blonde mage’s opinion, was quite a morale booster from the Rune Knight. Even if others would probably consider it vain, the fact that someone as celebrated as the Director of Fiore’s primary military force would ask her opinion on the strategy to use to engage the enemy, and accept her choice of what to do was uplifting. Nita waited until Serilda had stopped moving towards the unaware forms, taking that as a sign that Serilda was now waiting for her shot, before she pulled the trigger. Even though the fired shot had nailed its target perfectly, she would probably have to take another shot as it was still alive. Even as the ice elementals began to work themselves up, the leader of the Rune Knights and her canine companion stepped into the open. At a command from the snow-haired mage, the wolf let loose a reverberant howl, as it seemed to set itself alight with the radiance of a star. Without coming in contact with the fire, Serilda directed these brilliant hot flames onto two of the elementals, who seemed to have momentarily forgotten the threat created by the presence of their distant attacker.

While Nita was quite interested in finding out what would become of the ice elementals, she was not so undisciplined that she would leave off doing her job of attacking the elementals in order to know how they fared against the brilliant flames of Xiuh. Quickly lining up the same elemental she had hit before in her sights, the Pergrandian pulled the trigger again, the faint ‘plink’ of the gun informing her that she had loosed another high-powered bullet. The struck creature shattered like glass, on taking the second hit, but Nita did not have the time to celebrate the kill. For even as three of the creatures made of ice swarmed after her colleague, the last two elementals that remained seemed to be more avidly searching for her. Then by some strange, eldritch sense that Nita had no idea how it functioned, one of the elementals turned in her direction. Or at least it seemed to; it was difficult to say, when the creature in question seemed to lack a face. In any case, by the way it seemed to frantically demonstrate, it seemed to have found her. Immediately, it began flowing in her direction. Since she was close to three hundred meters away, Nita was simply going to attempt to keep shooting at it until it drew close enough, if ever it managed to come near, but the second elemental seemed to disintegrate into snow. While the Pergrandian was not too conversant with the powers of these creatures, something told her that the one that had just disintegrated had not died. The sudden feel of cold emanating from behind her made Nita realize with shock that the creature had manifested itself right behind her, managing to cover the distance between herself and it in such a short matter of time.

    ”Teleportation?!”

Even though Nita was young, she had been in her fair share of battles. Also, she did presently have a goddess of war fueling her combat abilities, so she was no wash over in combat. A mixture of battle reflexes and her Aspect of Knowledge informed her that an attack was imminent, and the young mage quickly rolled to the side, as a giant club smashed into the earth where she had just been less than a second ago. It seemed that this creature could make its ice plastic, allowing it to mold its form into varying shapes and structures. Quite a useful ability. There was, however, no time to admire it. Even as she ended her roll, lying on her side, Nita pointed two little white guns at the creature, and pulled both triggers at the same time. Knowing that she could not fight close range effectively with her M.A.D.A.M.s in Penetrating Enquiry form, Nita had transformed them back to their base state, in order to engage the present threat. Her fired shots found their marks, causing the elemental to reel backwards, and giving Nita enough space to roll onto her back and do a kip up into standing position. She reloaded the guns in record time, and emptied them into the elemental again, just before narrowly dodging a lance of ice thrust at her. Its companion had arrived. Nita’s guns transformed again, this time into ornate flintlocks, and she crossed both arms, so that she was pointing her guns at her targets which flanked her on either side, before pulling the triggers. The first elemental, which she had already shot twice before, juddered violently before exploding into chunks of inert snow and ice, but the second one came on relentlessly, swiping at her.

Nita performed a graceful side flip over the creature’s attacking limbs, aiming at it with both pistols while upside down and emptying one firearm into the elemental. The recoil of the shot sent her into a half spin, so that she landed backing the ice monster, but even as her feet were about touching the ground, she fired with the second gun, its own recoil serving to reduce her forward motion and stabilizing her. It was likely that fire wouldn’t melt their ice, as she had seen with Serilda’s case. In any case, as far as the Field Marshal was concerned, she seemed quite in charge of her own situation, even if she was facing off against three elementals. Nita had no idea where the girl with braids had come from, though. A summon, perhaps? In any case, Nita was not going to get distracted by Serilda’s own affairs, seeing as she knew the soldier would be more than capable of taking care of herself. Having lost the advantage of long range, Nita felt her guns were no longer of much advantage, and sent them back to her dimensional armory. With the damage her guns had inflicted on this second elemental, it was still in fighting form, but it would probably not take too much to destroy it. The elemental lunged at her, but Nita flipped over it, extending a hand at what seemed to be its head as she crossed directly over the creature. ”Night God Shard!” A long, jagged spike of wood burning in violet flame materialized and skewered the ice elemental to the frosty earth beneath. As Nita landed spryly, she noted that, just like the others, the being disintegrated, instead of melting. Weird stuff.

Turning in the direction of her partner, she held up both hands in a thumbs up sign. ”I’m good. Shall we proceed?”
