    Job Details:

"Character counts most when duty calls."

Serilda walked through the halls of Sabertooth’s guild, her boots clicking softly on the stone ground with each step. She walked with and air of confidence -- though not necessarily arrogance. With her back straight, shoulders back, and chin up, Serilda held herself like a woman that was both aware of her surroundings and unafraid to greet them. Her hands rested comfortably at the small of her back as she walked, and there wasn’t a single wrinkle in her pressed and uniformed attire. Her long white hair had been drawn up into a tight bun, save for a swath of bangs that framed one side of her face.

Beside her sounded the gentle pitter patter of paws. The hound was a rare breed of wolf known as a Star Wolf. She was just at the tail end of puppyhood, mostly grown but with a bit of maturity left to do. Her fur was thick and black, save for a spattering of cream colors on her face, paws, and down the length of her spine that closely resembled stardust. She walked obediently beside Serilda’s heels, her head turning this way and that to observe the world around her without straying to investigate, though the wizard could sense the wolf’s flares of curiosity from time to time.

They were on their way to the main meeting hall in the guild to meet with another member of Sabertooth for a job. Serilda had been asked to accompany this other wizard on a mission to reclaim some item of importance that had been stolen from the company that owned it. Normally, the job was reserved for Sabertooth members that were higher ranks than her, but it seemed the woman had been making enough of a name for herself that they thought she was ready to be tested on something potentially more dangerous. She didn’t have all the details yet. All she knew was that this other mage would greatly benefit from having a bit of help on the job, even if she was a couple ranks below him. With any luck, maybe she’d even learn a thing or two by working with him.

The Voidwalker didn’t know much about her upcoming partner aside from the fact that he was new to Sabertooth, despite his rank. He had joined not long after she had, but as far as Serilda was aware the two of them had never met nor spoken before. It was a large guild, both in population and in a physical sense. There were plenty of wizards that Serilda had yet to meet.

As she entered the large common area, the noblewoman paused to look around the room in an attempt to spot anyone that seemed to be waiting for someone.

Sabertooth. Despite having joined it, Chiyuki had known little of it besides the basic premise of their order. They were the golden standard of well-to-do men and women who abided and upheld the law when they needed to but were reputed and revered by all who'd cross their path. It was a substantially moderately populated guild, by despite having so many faces to recognize, there was always one familiar smile or perhaps a way of speech that any resident of Ace of Spades could recognize. "Your neighborhood Sabertooth Wizard," one might say. "What good people they are!" another might. It was, probably, the one legal guild with a history with the least amount of histrionics or devasting incidents were done by themselves or done upon them.

But their reputable profile among the community was not the reason for Chiyuki's enlistment. What is was, however, was a mystery to even his fellow guildmates. He was a mysterious man who always lounged and slept closest to wherever the food and drinks were and were always last to leave if there was ever a time where members had to. He was easily recognizable by his apple-red shock of hair that never seemed to be combed or well-kept, yet none had ever approached him, and he would never approach anybody. Chiyuki and his reasons were as much of a mystery to the world as it was to Sabertooth.

Today, Chiyuki had decided to take a job request. But even then he hadn't really taken one more than he was assigned one, since most days, balmy and cool, windy and dry, he had loitered about the guildhall doing nothing but eating up their resources, fueled by an insatiable hunger that, apparently, upset many of the cooks. He'd eat messily and clumsily but never managed to leave the place with traces. When morning struck and Chiyuki returned to the taverns, he was promptly, and somewhat indignantly, denied service until he had complete a job.

And so, by the tables closest to the Guild Hall common area, the messy-haired redhead dozed noisily at his seat, arms folded over the table and his sharp face ducked underneath. He wore a striped dress shirt and black dress pants of the same fabric and looked more like a civilian who worked in an office cubicle more than a wizard. He was, supposedly, waiting for a wizard of a lower caliber to accompany him of his task. Unfortunately, should she arrive, he would not be waiting, for he slumbered peacefully until some man, woman, or anything in between could stir him.

"Character counts most when duty calls."

Serilda knew nothing about the person she was supposed to be meeting outside of the fact that it was a man who went by the name “Doppo”. As far as what he looked like, however, she was completely in the dark. There were a couple people sitting off by themselves, including one guy dozing on a table, but no one appeared to be expecting anyone.

After a few moments of glancing around, she found a spot with a couple of guild members she did know and approached them. After bringing it up, one of them mentioned that they hadn’t met the guy yet but they had seen him and knew who he was. The wizard looked around the room and pointed him out as the man that was sleeping by himself across the way. Thanking the others, Serilda moved over to where he was sitting.

She got a brief chance to look at him, or at least what she could see of him. Lots of bright red hair adorned his head and he wore clothes that had more of a business look than anything else. “Doppo..?” Serilda didn’t yell his name, but she did speak it loud enough to rouse most people from a light sleep.

This guy did not appear to be sleeping lightly, though. He was pretty deep in slumber. Realizing that speaking wasn’t going to be enough, Serilda placed a hand on his shoulder and shook him a little. If that didn’t work she would shake a little harder. Never violently, she was trying to be as gentle as possible. But if they were going to do this job he needed to be awake for it, assuming whatever his magical skill set was had nothing to do with sleeping.

When he was finally awake, she would pull her hand back. “I apologize for waking you. Are you Doppo?” Assuming he confirmed his identity as the person she was supposed to be meeting, the woman held out a firm hand for him to shake by way of greeting. “My name is Serilda Sinclair, and this is my hound Xiuhcoatl.” She gestured to the wolf that sat obediently at her feet, looking up at Chiyuki with big, curious dark eyes. Her tail swished a little with interest as she wondered if this strange man was to be a new friend or not, obediently waiting for Serilda to guide her on how to treat him.

“I was asked to help you with a job. When did you want to head out?”

A verdant field of grass and daisies against a cerulean sky seeming to continue on forever. The wind was soft against his skin and great oak leaves could be heard rustling against each other in the near distance. Lakes of glistening water stared into the sun, and the sun would stare back, and despite the comforting heat of its rays, the water felt cool against his fingers as Chiyuki ran through it. A splash against his shins as he hopped from stone to stone against the lake and the gentle flutter of a white, small butterfly compelled him to frolick with it. All of the acuity of his senses were stimulated with the greetings of nature against his body, naked like a babe. It was a rather delightful vision, but all seemed to vanish when a stern grasp of his shoulder shook him to wake, and all memory of it with it.

Chiyuki, puzzled, raised his head to stare listlessly at the table. He'd do this for several moments before he'd turn to face a rather pretty woman with a well-kept shock of beautiful, silver locks. Her eyes were sharp, and her attire even sharper. She radiated the energy of a self-confident woman who walked the planet with a strong, yet gentle footing. His gaze would not express his listlessness any differently when he stared at her with weary, drooping eyes, but a modicum of bewilderment smeared across his expression just enough to make it noticeable. Eyes wandered down to the large beast that idled at the woman's side. It was a stunning animal, with fur like tar and eyes like pools. Chiyuki's cheeks became a peachy-red once admiring her.

The messy-haired redhead brought his attention back to the Serilda Sinclair, who offered an outstretched hand to him. He'd look at her seemingly soft hands with an acute puzzlement before his face would suddenly flash with a brief moment of clarity, finally reaching to weakly return the shake. ". . .Nice to meet'cha. . . Linda," he'd say softly, tonelessly, and wasn't certain of how he should greet her in general. With a weak, shaky grip that could've been broken should a soft wind blow upon them, the towering man cowered in the shadow of a shimmering woman. His countenance continued to be listless, eyes twinkling but void of any spectacular emotion. He fixed his eyes down at the beast once more, blushing again.

"Character counts most when duty calls."

It took several shakes to wake the man, an in another frame of mind Serilda might actually have been a little amused by that. As of right now, however, she was in job mode which meant that she was all business and professionalism. He looked up at her through groggy eyes, like he was still waking up even though he was already roused. For a moment she wondered if he’d even heard her.

He looked at Xiuhcoatl, who tilted her head curiously, ears perked forward. Clarity mostly dawned on him as he returned her handshake a bit weakly and confirmed he’d only half heard her when he called her Linda. “Serilda,” she corrected him, though not unkindly. Not everyone was good with names at the best of times, let alone when having just woken up from what had clearly been a very deep sleep.

Doppo once again looked down at Xiuh, his face turning about as red as his hair. Why was he blushing at her wolf, she asked herself in bewilderment? “She won’t hurt you,” Serilda assured him, her best guess that maybe he was intimidated by the creature. “She’s very well trained and has a sweet disposition.” Seriously, what was with this guy?

“Do you need a minute?” she asked, wondering if he could use some time to wake up in full so they could discuss the mission. “Maybe a coffee or something?”

Taking Down the Mechanical Giant Empty Re: Taking Down the Mechanical Giant

Post by DOPPO 30th December 2018, 11:37 am

Chiyuki would continue to look at the dark beast with a small, admiring gaze. He had quite the infatuation with animals, but this particular critter had such striking features: dark, thick fur, a seemingly wet nose that glistened in the bright lights of the tavern, and a rich stare that captivated the redhead, and it was no surprise that this may have bewildered the woman who couldn't guess the thoughts of a man so soft-spoken and unfamiliar. But, his captivation was not without attention to the owner of Xiuhcoatl, Serilda Sinclair, who was also rather striking, but not so much that she'd keep Chiyuki's attention for very long.

Serilda corrected the groggy man rather matter-of-factly, sure to make him certain of her name. But despite Chiyuki's efforts to listen, her corrections went from one ear throughout the other and he'd nod with a lackluster enthusiasm, sure that he had gotten it correct this time, "Hilda," he'd resolve tonelessly, the twinkle in his baggy eyes elucidating his genuine effort. But whether he was a bad listener or simply weary was hard to tell.

The pretty-faced woman mentioned the beast's nature and how it posed hardly a threat, if at all, to the man. As she spoke, Chiyuki would stare at Serilda with his usual indifferent expression but was just as confused as she was when she'd mention this. While the beast was certainly stunning, he, in fact, cared little about its temperament or what danger it posed. If he was void of common decency, his pale hands would've thrust forward to restlessly stroke the beast's head, then its neck, all the way to its hips in one large stride. He had wondered just how soft its fur was, or if it was thin and bristly instead, and if the nose was wet or if it were all some clever deception of its appearance. The ideas began to flush his cheeks again in the shadow of his hair.

At the mention of coffee, however, Xiuhcoatl and the flustering questions that came with her became no more than an afterthought. Food and drink were activities and concepts that invigorated him more than an animal could, and yet he'd look relatively depressed despite his indifferent expressions. He'd rub the nape of his neck pitifully, "They said they wouldn't serve me until I completed a job or two. . ." Chiyuki sighed and lips would morph into a tepid frown, nothing more than general unhappiness for most, but his eyes quivered as if he were about to sob. But this would quickly sharpen into a displeased glare, and his arms would fold over his chest indignantly, "What kind of wacky-tacky-shit service is that. . .? I'm not a glutton, I didn't eat that much. . ." he'd curse under his breath, and while it was difficult to hear, it wasn't so difficult to surmise that something questionable was being said. Chiyuki was certain that his appetite was normal, despite the cooks' accusations and claims of his "eating inhuman amounts of food."

"Character counts most when duty calls."

    Hilda?

Serilda just blinked at the man for a moment, her face expressionless and void of any emotion, even frustration. His tone was as even as her own, but there was a slight glisten in his eyes when they met hers. It was reminiscent of a lost puppy that was just so happy to be acknowledged. The woman sighed inwardly, deciding it wasn’t worth trying to correct again. Once was okay, but being persistent about it would just make both of them look like jackasses.

“Sure,” she said, rolling with the incorrect name. Serilda explained about Xiuh’s kind nature, which didn’t really seem to phase the man one way or another -- only serving to make the noblewoman all the more confused. He certainly perked up when she mentioned coffee, though. Well, maybe perked up wasn’t the right phrase. He showed some kind of emotion, though it was more mournful than anything else as he explained the cooks refused to serve him until he completed some work.

As Doppo muttered under his breath about the shit service, Serilda once again sank briefly into her own mind to wonder what the hell she’d just gotten wrapped up in. What kind of behavior did it take to reach a point where a member of the guild was refused service at their own guildhall? She quickly pushed these thoughts from her mind for now. They didn’t really matter. What mattered was that she needed to get this man up and moving so they could do this job they’d been assigned, and if that meant getting him a coffee then that’s what she’d do.

“One moment.” Motioning for Xiuhcoatl to stay, she left the hound with Doppo for a minute or so and moved over to the counter where one of the kitchen staff was waiting to take orders. “Good morning. May I order a coffee, please?”

The man smiled and nodded. “Sure thing, Lady Serilda. What size?”

She turned and looked back at Doppo briefly. “Better make it a large.”

He followed her line of sight and frowned a little. “Is it for that Chiyuki fellow? He did tell you we cut him off, right?”

“Yeah, I was going to ask about that..?”

The server scoffed under his breath. “You should see the way that one eats. I don’t think he has a stomach so much as a black hole. The bottomless pit just hangs around and eats insane amounts of food all day and hasn’t taken a single job since he got here. We started running out of food for the rest of the guild, so he’s not allowed to eat anymore of our supplies until he’s done some work to merit being a member.”

Serilda frowned a bit in thought. “I see.” Her face was once again unreadable, and it was hard to tell if she was showing displeasure over the idea of her partner for the day being a lazy mooch or with the server for refusing to serve one of the guild’s own. Probably both. “No matter. I was assigned a job with him today and he’s having a hard time being coherent. I’ll take one for him at my expense, and a second for myself.”

He nodded. “Sure thing, miss. Just one moment.” Serilda placed the appropriate amount of jewel on the counter for him, and a minute later she had two large coffees in to-go cups. Unsure if he preferred cream or sugar, she placed a couple packets of both on top of the lid and walked back to where Doppo and Xiuh waited.

“Shall we?” she asked the man, offering him the cup from a distance where he’d have to actually stand up and start moving to take it from her.

Taking Down the Mechanical Giant Empty Re: Taking Down the Mechanical Giant

Post by DOPPO 31st December 2018, 2:20 pm

It wasn't particularly uncommon for this to happen to him—eating, feasting, gorging himself, or however one might phrase it, at some restaurant and quickly being banned or shunned by the owners. It seemed as if nothing could quell his insatiable appetite besides an empty wallet. So when Sabertooth cooks would serve members, asking for no more than a jewel, Chiyuki was quick to indulge himself. It wasn't the reason he had joined their order, no, but it was one of the things that kept him in the tavern for so long.

With nothing more than an almost-empty bag of crab and cheddar flavored chips to sustain him, the sulking Chiyuki lazed about the guildhall until he had convinced himself to do this job with the allegedly disciplined Hilda Sinclair.

Chiyuki had been staring at the black beast while Hilda would excuse herself for what she'd consider "one moment" until she had returned with something astonishing—a coffee. Now, if this Hilda Sinclair woman wasn't already charming, the bitter smell of coffee in a thick paper to-go cup would've convinced any starving man that she was worth some amount of attention. His face perked up like sickly puppy's, his baggy eyes gazing wearily and somewhat sympathetically, and then his face lit up when he'd realize that the coffee was for him.

The redhead shuffled over to her with an unfaltering gaze towards the cup, and with both hands gently took it from her grasp. "Thanks." he'd murmur, still rather monotonously and without looking at Hilda. Chiyuki would then quickly remove the lid, a notable pop! following, and poured all the sugar and cream she had brought for him into the brown liquid. From the paper cup to his mouth, the coffee disappeared in only a fraction of the time it took for Hilda to garner it. The cup was reasonably large as well and still he had been consumed faster than it would take for someone to savor the flavor—he didn't even mix the sugar and cream in thoroughly. He accomplished all of this with sluggish, ghoulish movements but with such speed and celerity that it might've been hard to believe that someone so slow and weary could be doing it with such haste and accuracy.

A deep, unsatisfied sigh exhaled from him and the look on his face seemed to reflect that. As if it were saying, "Oh, that was not enough! How could there be so little?" But no, instead, he'd say, "That was good." Again, tonelessly. He'd look at Hilda now, trying to express some sort of acknowledgment, but his face would screw together and brows would scrunch and would end up looking more indignant than anything.

Chiyuki caressed the cup gingerly in his hands, looking at Hilda more fixedly this time, "If you don't want yours, then. . ." he started, his gaze shifting down to her own cup.

Taking Down the Mechanical Giant Empty Re: Taking Down the Mechanical Giant

Post by Serilda Sinclair 1st January 2019, 12:04 pm

"Character counts most when duty calls."

As Serilda busied herself with putting a couple creamers into her coffee, she could only watch as Doppo dumped everything she’d brought him into his own cup and then downed it in practically three gulps without even bothering to stir it. She watched the entire spectacle with a straight face, her expression as unreadable as ever while she stirred her coffee and observed his mannerisms.

Securing the lid back on, he finished his drink and told her in a most unenthusiastic tone how he had enjoyed the drink. Serilda might not have believed him if it weren’t for the fact that he did seem a bit more attentive now, with his eyes if not his voice. He looked down at her own cup and indicated that if she wasn’t going to drink it he would happily do so for her. Her blank, slightly pensive expression didn’t change as she lifted her cup to her lips and took a delicate sip that was probably just painstaking to behold for the strange man.

“They’ll have more on the train,” she told him simply. The destination of the job was far enough out that they were going to have to take transportation to get there. Serilda was willing to extend herself a little bit to try and get this sluggish man going so they could do this job, but she wasn’t the type to fully bend over backward for a friend, let alone a complete stranger. He was clearly aware of what he needed to do if he wanted to eat and drink here at his heart’s content. Whether or not he cowboyed up to do it or not was his own business.

She, on the other hand, was going to go do her job. Not wanting to be late for the train, she looked down at the wolf. “Xiuhcoatl, Hæl.” The hound happily jumped up to her feet and trotted next to Serilda as the woman turned and made her way out of the mess hall, lightly sipping her coffee. She didn’t turn to see if Doppo would follow, though she did keep her Void senses on him to see if he would sit back down or actually walk after her.

Taking Down the Mechanical Giant Empty Re: Taking Down the Mechanical Giant

Post by DOPPO 1st January 2019, 4:07 pm

Chiyuki watched Hilda drink and savor her coffee with a grave expression in which she would meet with her still indifferent one. His countenance contained a look of some modicum of disgruntlement but no more so than his awe for the woman: her pet, her silvery, stern voice, the way she fixed her hair. He noticed all of these things but her generosity and disciplined ability to regulate it stood out among all other qualities. It was a good quality, or at least it wasn't a bad one, and upon noticing this Chiyuki began to feel perturbed to some extent. Maybe it was because of his inability to understand this or because he was sure he couldn't mimic it to some degree. Whatever it was, his impression of her would be memorable for both her generosity and her diligence.

Hilda began to walk away—towards the exit of the guildhall—and the stunning Xiuhcoatl would be quick to follow. Their figures became smaller and smaller as they continued and Chiyuki, uncertain of his ability to navigate to the train on his own, paused for a moment and followed them with long, dragging strides. He'd catch up with them soon, before they approached the exit anyway, and dragged behind them quietly. His bright blue eyes were nearly shut as only the sleep-deprived, pale and baggy skin underneath them could be seen. His breaths were soft and periodic and looked as if he were dozing off the entire time, following the sound of paws and the soles of shoes tapping against the hard floorboards. But this was not the result of an insomniac's restless nights but more of his unique magic and the spectacularly noticeable effects on him they had: the weariness, the gross appetite, even his deprived personality were the "unfortunate" result of this.

As the group came closer to the exit the idea of a train ride became more real and so would the possibility of coffee, but coffee wasn't nearly as filling as most other things—like beef or potatoes. He was hungry but couldn't look forward to drinking any as it would only make him crave more, and Hilda Sinclair wouldn't dare gorge him. Even though his eyes were nearly closed and closed rather peacefully at that, his face screwed as if he were glaring, and an ominous gloom shrouded over him and festered behind the pair ahead of him.

Chiyuki concentrated more on this idea until he put himself in a foul mood, albeit not noticeable through the average eye, and ended up driving to the conclusion that he needed to talk to her, albeit again, he was not very good at small talk or speaking to other people in any case. Still, with his nearly shut eyes, he spoke tautly and heaved the words from his throat, "You sure there'll be more—the coffee?" Chiyuki sounded more grouchy than anything and it was mostly due to his own impatient thoughts, even though he has a respectable amount of patience when food or drink was involved.

"Character counts most when duty calls."

There was a brief span of a few seconds where Doppo merely stood in his place, as if deciding whether or not he was going to follow her. But ultimately, she sensed him pick up his feet and catch up. Since he was lagging a step or two behind her, Serilda was unable to see any shifting of expressions on his face that might betray the inner argument inside of him regarding the possibilities of food and drink in his near future. Instead, she merely continued on to lead them out of the guild hall and toward the train station, comfortably sipping on her drink all the while.

She didn’t really intend on making much further conversation with him, at least for a while. It was obvious to her that he wasn’t exactly much of a morning person -- or at least, that’s how she interpreted his grogginess. However, it wasn’t long before he spoke up and asked her a question, albeit in a somewhat miffed tone.

Continuing to assume that his grouchiness was little more than having to be awake when he’d rather be asleep, she answered him in her unperturbed fashion. “Yes, I’m sure there will be more coffee. They usually have food, as well, though it costs jewel of course.” Train fare didn’t usually cover meals or drinks, which cost extra. Of course, she had a feeling that they weren’t supplied with nearly enough of either consumables to satiate this man, but that was neither here nor there.

As they walked, she decided to make a second attempt at engaging him in conversation regarding the job. “May I ask you about what kind of magic you use?” Serilda inquired, turning her head to glance at him. “Normally I wouldn’t pry, but this particular job looks like it’s going to be a bit on the hostile side. We might be a little better prepared if we know more about one another’s abilities.”

Taking Down the Mechanical Giant Empty Re: Taking Down the Mechanical Giant

Post by DOPPO 5th January 2019, 10:40 am

Upon mentioning it, Chiyuki realized that he wasn't entirely sure what this job they were taking together actually entailed. In fact, when he reviewed the guild's job bulletin board, he spent large quantities of time looking over the jobs that were posted and eventually ended up selecting one that differed from the rest in one way alone—the jewel reward. He couldn't really recall the details of the job or its particulars but could promptly remember the jewel reward scribbled at the bottom of the page with a thick, messy ink. It smelled like beef bowls with caramelized onions, scrambled eggs, and bottomless cups of hard cider and steamed rice.

Something about that last thought abruptly changed his mood for the better—his face returned to its usual indifferent expression, but his cheeks were warm and the look in his eyes was innocent and light. His demeanor was that of a distracted puppy. He was distracted by these thoughts until miss Hilda Sinclair's voice had pierced him yet again, but this time with far more personal subjects.

Chiyuki's eyes collide with Hilda Sinclair's less blue ones in an unexciting exchange, and he'd not respond for several noticeable moments before returning his gaze to the shuffling feet. He spoke plainly, "Ah. . . Instatia—" his hands slipped back into his pants pockets, and a long, protruding yawn would drip from his throat, "Insatiable Hunger. I use the energy from—from the things I eat. . ." he'd explain rather thinly, not expanding upon the subject much more besides his toneless and somewhat humorous comment to follow, "But don't worry. I don't eat people." Chiyuki attempted to reassure Hilda Sinclair of this, but the genuineness of his words may have been a clear attempt to tease the woman instead. It was clear that he was rather soft-spoken, and wouldn't speak unless spoken to, but what he had to say was questionable at best.

"Character counts most when duty calls."

This man certainly got more and more odd by the minute.

They walked along toward the train station with minimal conversation between the two of them. Doppo answered her question with about as much interest as he’d shown in the rest of their interaction thus far, even pausing to flat out yawn in the middle of his response. “Insatiable Hunger?” she repeated with a curious frown. It was a magic as bizarre as he was. There were an infinite number of magics out there, of course, so she never really knew what to expect of other wizards but what he described to her was definitely up there in terms of strangeness.

He assured her that he didn’t eat people, and Serilda did cast a sly look his way. Typically she was the one that others had difficulty in deciphering whether or not she was joking, given that most of the time she was so straight laced in personality and demeanor that she made even Rune Knights look like slouches in comparison. She searched him only for a moment before the slightest of smirks tugged on her lips and she looked forward once more. “I would certainly hope not,” she replied, perhaps with a bit of teasing of her own. “That’s hardly good for business.”

Knowing it was only fair to share information of her own after asking him, she said, “My own magic is Voidwalking. It’s a bit complicated to explain, but the general gist is that I can control the spaces between all matter.” Truthfully, Serilda still hadn’t really come up with a concise way to explain her abilities to others. Despite the fact that it was magic, Voidwalking was based on a highly scientific concept that was often difficult for others to grasp. After a while, she’d learned to stop trying to explain it in full unless someone truly expressed an interest in understanding the details of it. But for most people, simply understanding that she was able to more or less control near about anything in the physical world around her was a good enough explanation.

As they approached the station and waited for their train to arrive, Serilda looked over at him again. “Doppo… do the staff at the guild hall know that your magic is reliant upon how much you eat?” She was curious if he’d ever taken the time to explain that to them, or if they were unaware that cutting him off from food supplies also meant they were cutting him off from his ability to utilize his magic at full strength.

Taking Down the Mechanical Giant Empty Re: Taking Down the Mechanical Giant

Post by DOPPO 7th January 2019, 12:07 pm

Voidwalking? Chiyuki thought to himself. How neat.

Surprisingly enough, his magic came off as stranger than others when he would reveal what it was. In a world with all sorts of oddities for magics or peculiar substances that'd ought not to come out of a human being's fingertips or nostrils does, one would normally consider the possibility of people normalizing the spectrum of magic and all of its functions—but this often was not the case. Chiyuki's magic, Insatiable Hunger, was a simple exaggeration of a completely normal bodily function and was considerably less abnormal or impossible than something such as the revered Hilda Sinclair's Voidwalking. But the astonished glances or questioning pitches always seemed to accompany this type of conversation.

The redhead's thoughts swept him away in its stream and distracted him from Hilda Sinclair for what only seemed to be a few moments until their sporadic strides carried them to the train station where sets of seasoned tracks would greet them, along with some equally aged benches awaiting for people to occupy them. It wasn't an empty station—small groups of people or distracted individuals scattered across the station here and there and none of them idled with a sense of urgency quite like theirs. But Chiyuki would notice none of this, not that it mattered until the reputable Hilda Sinclair engaged with him yet again.

Chiyuki couldn't recall a time where he had talked so much, even if the conversation between him and the woman were kept to a minimum, and felt somewhat weary after each exchange. But the topic was interpersonal and compelled him to give some acceptable response. He'd pause for a moment before replying and spoke quietly, matter-of-factly, "It wouldn't matter." Chiyuki did not sigh, but the silence that followed this comment felt as if he did. He never liked discussing his magic with others—it only reminded him of food and made him miserable. The man could not recall a moment in his life where he felt "full," and when people would toss the expression about so lightly, he wallowed and brooded. He was certain that he would die if he had ever stopped eating for even small periods of time, even if he of all people would be best suited to survive for extended amounts of time without eating. He loved food—and if not for his magic would be somewhat morbidly overweight to some degree. But the chore felt like a perpetual cycle of starvation and insatiable appetite. He loathed it.

The mood was somewhat melancholy now, and realizing this, Chiyuki made a bland attempt to return it to how it once was with his dry and misunderstood humor, "If only there was a kind enough spirit to help such a poor man!" he said this as if he were exclaiming this point, but did this so monotonously and quietly that many could hardly tell it was meant to be humor. Or teasing. Or peer pressure. It could be any one of those things, truthfully. One of them.

She cast him a curious look when he expressed that it wouldn’t matter if he told the cooks or not. Her inclination was to insist otherwise, and she did open her mouth as if she meant to argue the point, but then closed it and thought a little more. Perhaps he was right. Even if they knew and were understanding of the fact, their supplies were still limited. They had an awful lot of mouths to feed, and if Doppo ate as much as she suspected based on what she’d heard… then it was possible that even if the kitchen staff knew, there wouldn’t necessarily be a whole lot they could do about it.

“You may be right, I suppose,” she finally conceded. “Though at the very least if they were aware of it, they might be more understanding and could try to accommodate as much as they could without putting the rest of the guild out. You shouldn’t be punished and alienated for something you can’t help.” Particularly if it was something that affected his magic and his ability to perform for the guild. But, that was up to him to decide. He certainly knew his own magic better than she did, and Serilda didn’t want to make too many assumptions. All she could do was trust that he’d know whether or not he was in a good enough state to tackle a job.

Doppo exclaimed then about how he wished someone around him would be kind enough to take pity on him. Once more, Serilda gave him a side eyed glance as she attempted to deduce whether he was joking or serious. “If only,” she seemed to lament along with him, her tone still equally as indecipherable as to if she were teasing or not.

Soon enough the train pulled up. Passengers emptied themselves out and the crew welcomed the new boardees while checking their tickets or reservations. The two of them managed to find an empty section of seats. Xiuh wasted no time in hopping into one of the spots next to the window, turning to look up at Serilda with a hopeful expression. “I taught you better than to beg,” she informed the wolf, though the slight smirk on her face betrayed her amusement. Serilda opened the window enough that the hound could stick her head out into the open air, her tongue lolling happily out of her mouth.

She took a seat next to the animal and across from Doppo, and it only took another few minutes before the train was off once more. When the attendants came by, Serilda did order them some breakfast, though only a single plate each. If he wanted more than that he would have to purchase it himself, but she figured it wouldn’t hurt to cover a meal for him in the interest of making sure he had something to work with when they got to their destination. She also ordered a plate of meat for the wolf, who would eat her full share happily before shoving her face back out into the wind like any common house dog.

Unless he took the effort to strike up a conversation, the ride would be fairly quiet as Serilda would do little to pry about his life in an attempt to be social. She was comfortable with the silence so long as he was, content to scroll through her iLac or write in her journal to pass the time. Before long, they would find themselves pulling up to the station that was nearest the series of canyons where their target had last been spotted. They would still need a vehicle to get them the rest of the way in time, but luckily one had already been arranged for them by the guild when they’d signed up for the job.

They got into the rental car and Serilda drove them to the coordinates listed with the job posting. “Keep an eye out for a man in a giant robot suit,” she told him, having already deduced that Doppo wasn’t exactly aware of the particulars of the job. “He’s our target, and supposedly he’s hostile.”

Taking Down the Mechanical Giant Empty Re: Taking Down the Mechanical Giant

Post by DOPPO 12th January 2019, 8:18 pm

Chiyuki listened to miss Hilda Sinclair's advice but did it with tepid effort. It wasn't any different from the "Well maybe if you asked this!" and the "If you told them this, they might do this!" comments he involuntarily garnered over the years. His magics were high maintenance and inconvenient at best—but he didn't ask to be born with them and he didn't ask to be accommodated for it either. Her words were sincere and as thoughtful as one could possibly make their words to be, but Chiyuki still wasn't impacted in what could be visibly observed and ended up thinking of other things while she spoke—thought of things like "Oh, when will this day end?" and platters of comfort food lined up on a mahogany table inside a contemporary, homestyle restaurant.

Quickly enough, miss Hilda Sinclair, her pooch, and him crept into the train and into the nearest section of seats that were open. Chiyuki dropped himself onto the seats across from his company and closest to the aisle with an audible thud and began to prepare himself to nap. His legs were crossed, his hands crossed over his chest and tucked into his armpits, and his head bobbed onto his shoulder. The only thing that probably kept him from dozing right after this ritual was his noticing on the nuanced banter between miss Hilda Sinclair and her powerful hound and the platters of food that followed—the pair was awfully cute and the sausage links tremendously greasy.

Chiyuki slept most of the way there in silence. His mouth hung open, chest inflated and deflated like a little balloon, and his nose would wiggle occasionally—he dozed comfortably and completely unaware of any event that occurred since the closing of his eyes. But though the expressions were pleasant and reflective of something delightful, his dreams were mostly irksome. He recalled the dark, misshapen streets of Motor City or shuddering remarks like "You look like him!" and "Ugly child!" being tossed at him like they were some light things. But no physical feature of his would ever react to or reflect these unpleasant things despite their frequent occurrence. He would not sweat or fidget in his slumber—one would think he was dreaming of feasts.

It was only some time that he was awake again after the train ride before he became comfortable inside a rental car he considered luxurious—and he considered most cars luxurious—with miss Hilda Sinclair and her pooch again. Chiyuki leaned against the car door in his dozing posture again, eyes closed. "Yes, yes. . ." he'd respond almost as quickly as she finished with closed eyes struggling to fall asleep—though he was doing this, as far as miss Hilda Sinclair was concerned, they were both keeping an eye out for this person until she noticed otherwise.

As the car tires would bounce to the tiniest of bumps in their path or the engine would make a somewhat loud noise, his countenance screwed into something far more irritated. Chiyuki heaved a heavy sigh from his stomach, "It's stuffy in here. . ." he moaned, sinking into his seat and reclining back. He looked out of the window with drooping eyes, "Isn't this more of a. . .whatchamacalit—" he impatiently tapped his thigh, "—Doom Knight problem?" Chiyuki queried, yet surely he was referring to the Rune Knights—Fiore's military policemen of sorts.

Taking Down the Mechanical Giant Empty Re: Taking Down the Mechanical Giant

"Character counts most when duty calls."

    Man, this guy was weird.

Aside from when the food came, he slept the entire train ride. That in and of itself wasn’t that strange. After all, plenty of people were able to nap on public transportation, particularly for longer rides. However, as the day carried on and they continued to move and make their way toward the location of their destination, he continued to be just as sluggish and disinterested in the world as he had been at the start of everything. He slouched down in the front seat of the car, but Serilda honestly couldn’t tell if he was keeping a lookout or not.

She gave him a confused look when he piped up about Doom Knights. It only took her a second to realize he was talking about the Rune Knights. This guy apparently was just bad with names, as if their introduction this morning hadn’t been evidence enough of that. “Would rolling down a window help?” she asked in regard to his saying it was stuffy. Perhaps he was the type of person to get motion sick from too long on transportation, which would explain the sluggishness. “And yeah, this does seem like something the Rune Knights would usually take care of. I’m not sure why they chose to send wizards instead. Maybe they think they need help.”

His question was a good one. This did seem like more of an issue for the militant group than a wizarding guild, but they were assigned the job so here they were. Being a woman that was very focused on duty, there was little complaining she would do about it. This was her job, and she planned on getting it done to the best of her ability.

Once they were close enough to the entrance of the canyon, Serilda stopped the car. “It’s here,” she told the man. Already she could sense the large machine with her magic, its large mechanical body making its way toward the entrance where they were. She hopped out quickly, opening the back door so Xiuh could get out. Already the wolf was ready for battle, sensing her mistress’s nerves on high alert. Serilda withdrew her scimitar, the weapon glowing with holy light even in the daytime, pristine in comparison to the worn looking scabbard that housed it.

The unit was getting closer, now. Any second it was going to come running from behind the corner, looking to make a break toward the nearest city. She would not let that happen. Extending her free hand to her side, she called to the particles of the Void in the air, twisting them in a circular motion until a large space of highly pressurized air cycloned next to her. The magic itself had no visible element to it, however it was low enough to the ground that a bit of dust and dirt got picked up into it. It would look like a tightly packed tornado leveled sideways and shaped like a giant spike.

She held it at the ready, poised and waiting for the right time to strike. The job posting had made it clear this would not be an easy job, and she wanted to get the jump on the thing before the guy inside could even process that he was under attack. Waiting until just the right moment, Serilda threw the stake. It raced through the air and as the Tesseract unit stepped out into the open the spell slammed into its chassis, tearing a gaping hole in the armoring through one of the shoulders.

The man inside stumbled back in surprise momentarily, the large humanoid unit trying to catch its footing. Sparks flew from exposed wires where Serilda had hit the thing. However, he was quick to react. Three orb shaped drones detached from the Tesseract’s frame, and all four of them started to make their way toward the wizards with lethal intent...

Taking Down the Mechanical Giant Empty Re: Taking Down the Mechanical Giant

Post by DOPPO 20th January 2019, 3:22 pm

The car stopped and they had arrived at the entrance of a barren canyon. Now why a man in a robotic suit would be here of all places was a mystery to Chiyuki seeing as that the nearest plot of civilization took a several-minute car ride to arrive at. But he supposed that the outcasts of society would live somewhere so strange seeing as they were outcasts.

Chiyuki was the last to exit the car and did so sluggishly. He heaved a weary sigh from the bottom of his stomach into the air, dragging one foot out the door to the other and had ended up with only some parts of him outside the car by the time the considerably large robot-man had arrived. Miss Hilda Sinclair and her dutiful pooch had already prepared themselves for combat while Chiyuki was closing the car door as softly and gently as he could—it was as if no threat to him and his companions were behind him at all.

The redhead turned around and Miss Hilda Sinclair had already drawn her scimitar, glowing and all until a stake was lunged and struck the large robotic figure with so much force that a gaping hole was torn into its chassis. Little white lights flickered and spat from exposed wires but were clearly not enough to deem the roboman—what Chiyuki now calls the figure—defeated. A small formation of spherical drones projected from the roboman and lunged at them with deadly force and speed. Well, deadly to most. Chiyuki watched these drones with a quizzical expression as if he were eyeing some interesting thing like a colorful bug or a shiny stone. But as these drones buzzed over to them, the redhead stood still with one hand pocketed and the other hanging to his side. His flesh began to melt and turn black, like a viscous oil or goo, until his entire arm was coated in this substance—seemingly wet and dripping. From this collection of black goo, some of it parted from his arm and collected into a fist-sized orb that crept over to Miss Hilda Sinclair and hovered over his and her shoulders. It was entirely unnoticeable until a drone would dart itself into their general spaces and said goo would expand, extend, and create a misshapen wall to prevent them from coming any closer. It morphed and twisted as the drones attempted to work around its field of control, covering any points in which they lunged.

Ravenous Black Slime—unmentioned magic of his that was the result of his own forgetfulness and lack of concern. It was a, as named, black slime that existed within the pores of his body and exhumed from him to provide a viscous and effective defense against all things magical and tangible. Of course, it was called "ravenous" for a reason, as it especially enjoyed partaking in the consumption of magical substances. It was an especially fitting slime considering Chiyuki's own appetite.

Chiyuki, still a considerable distance behind the entire group, began to exhale. His pocketed hand caressed his neck, he cracked it, and suddenly a rush of liveliness and visible intensity invigorated his countenance. For the first time in weeks, some other expression swept over his face, and it was perhaps the most unpleasant of all of the people currently within the area. It was lopsided and screwed, and his brows scrunched together until his entire face wrinkled. His eyes sharpened into a glare and his pearly white teeth bit his lower lips—he looked pissed off! He looked so pissed off that the bags underneath his eyes tightened and looked more like eyeshadow; he looked so pissed off that some small veins could be seen popping from his arms; he looked so pissed off that he could be mistaken for an entirely different person!

With arms crossed now, the irritable redhead looked over to the two approaching drones that darted past Miss Hilda Sinclair with a mechanical bloodlust with an equally lusting glare. The drones rolled into him with enough force to make a considerably loud thud noise, but Chiyuki was unphased and remained still. But this was only temporary since not long had passed before one could see the temperamental redhead relentlessly beating the drones—just with bare fists, and did it with less control and more as if he were using them for some sort of anger outlet. He'd beat and stomp on them until their mechanical innards spilled and whatever fluid had filled them splashed over his fingers and dripped from his hands. Chiyuki began to rant, "What a joke! There's this big-ass robot in front of me and I get this shit?" his brooding seemed endless and he became more chatty and vulgar than ever. He swore underneath his breath and looked at shells of the drones indignantly. He continued this for several seconds until the drone shells began to flicker. Chiyuki looked at them curiously, though still completely "pissy."

Not a moment had passed before the shells had combusted, and while his mouthlike slime had swallowed most of the explosion, much of the remnants had been visible since parts of his shirt was gone and left a revealing image of his toned torso (which had been extremely well built considering his diet and gluttonous appetite) and an expression red with rage, some spots black with combustion fumes—or slime. He paused and not long had passed before he went off into a tangent of swearing and cussing like an especially vulgar sailor. He kicked what remained of the drone shells around like some violent kid on a temper tantrum. "I can't—! I can't even AFFORD a new shirt! God help me! God help them! What a fuc—! I can't believe this shi—AH!—" he screamed, pulling on his red hair before turning to look at Miss Hilda Sinclair who was many strides away, "Kill that thing! Oh, I swear to—HILDA!" Chiyuki demanded, or complained. It was a combination of both, really, and he was spread about all frazzled and upset. While raw fury invigorated him, his lips quivered like he was about to cry. His voice lowered and brows scrunched together again, "I. . . just bought this shirt. . .!"

“Oh my gods, we will get you a new shirt later, Doppo!”

Was he actually throwing a tantrum about a shirt right now in the middle of a fight? She could hardly believe her ears, but his personality had taken a total one eighty since this started. Serilda had never heard such a profound string of profanity come from one individual before as she had from this odd man right now. His emotions were everywhere, to boot. He had been at best lethargic since they met, and now suddenly he was showing every case of anger and sorrow that one person could possibly muster at the same time.

Of course, Serilda didn’t quite understand his plight -- later perhaps she would take time to address it, but right now there were more important things. Like living.

She and the wolf quickly split ways as the man in the tesseract unit lobbed a grenade at them. The force from it threw them both a few feet, and sharp bits of shrapnel tore at her flesh. Serilda grunted at the pain and tucked her body against itself, controlling her roll along the ground until she could pop right back up onto her feet -- only to see that their target had lobbed a second grenade right at her. Tapping into her magic, she warped the air around her to give it the suctioning properties of a black hole, pulled the explosive away from herself and throwing it right back at the Tesseract unit.

It blew up in the giant robot’s face, causing it to rock back a step. She needed to find a way to incapacitate this thing. Serilda hadn’t had a whole lot of time to mentally process Chiyuki’s magic, but she had caught enough of a glimpse to assume he was best in hand to hand fights, considering how he’d rather brutally pounded the drones with his fists. Reaching into the ground directly below the unit, Serilda shifted the Void particles there violently, causing a miniature earthquake just beneath their target’s feet. The man in the armored unit stumbled, finding it difficult to keep his footing and leaving himself open for an attack.

Unfortunately, it also didn’t keep him from unleashing another strike of his own. A plate opened on the armor set and a black cloud of sorts appeared to pour from it. It moved in a fashion that was peculiar for a cloud, though, and as it came closer to her she realized it was a swarm of something. Thousands of tiny little robots swirled around her, nipping at her skin and overwhelming her with a great number of small attacks that quickly stacked on one another to hurt her greatly.

She swatted angrily at the things, trying to fight through to pain to find a way to get rid of them. There were so many! Raising her hand above her head, Serilda used one of her few spells that required a vocal incantation. “Empty Chill!” she cried. The immediate air around her suddenly became as frigid and thin as though she were standing at the top of the tallest mountain. It wasn’t enough to kill the nanobots but it did slow them down significantly, giving her some time to keep swatting at them and trying to come up with a way to get rid of them so she could keep fighting.

Xiuhcoatl, on the other hand, was doing her best to attack the main robot as best as she could. She wasn’t exactly bred for fighting machines, but that didn’t stop her from trying. The wolf continually leapt at the large unit while it was struggling to find its balance on the shaking ground, and she aimed for pieces of its chassis that were already loose, ripping pieces off little by little to expose more of its sensitive innards that it needed to be operable. A lucky shot from the Tesseract managed to side swip the animal, however, sending the wolf a couple meters where she hit the ground so hard it stunned her.

Chiyuki often got irritated over many things, though he'd hardly ever show it, and it never really escalated to anything more than a peevish attitude. But having seen his shirt being torn and his fair, delicate flesh smoked with dust and dirt, it seemed whatever sunshine that encompassed him had reduced to a deep, dark gloom.

Of course, his grievances weren't shared between the redhead and his pretty-faced companion, Miss Hilda Sinclair. In fact, she seemed perturbed with his behavior and followed with a "shut up and do your job" sort of comment—and that's what he did. Albeit, indignantly and with wet, glossy eyes and an open mouth with quivering lips. If he didn't have a lick of pride, he probably would've started sobbing. But instead, he sniffled until his nose turned red and huffed. "Don't yell at me!" he screamed back at her before hunching over and dashing forward. His speed was incredible despite the lack of magical power being exhumed from him, each stride closing the distance between him and Hilda, then eventually closing the distance between him and the man in the robotic suit until he had gained on him.

Both of his teammates were occupied; Miss Hilda Sinclair had been swarmed by god-knows-what and had been struggling to deal with it quickly and efficiently and Xiuhcoatl had been cast aside with the brisk strike of the robotic man, sending her off someplace, unmoving. Though both of their circumstances weren't the best, he paid them little mind and prowled forward anyway, lunging at the man's armored torso with a large, brutish force. When his knuckles slammed against the metal, an audible thoomp rang throughout the battlefield, and yet no one moved. No one moved until this robotic man peered down at him, and while his armored face wasn't capable of weaving any sort of human expression, it wore a petty, awful grin in seeing his fist tremble in the dent it made in his armor. Chiyuki glared at his fist and the dent it made, retrieving it from the metal and caressing it sympathetically, and there was a moment of pause and tension between the two before the robotic man swung the arm opposite of Chiyuki and crashed it into what would be his ribcage—though it failed to be the case. It hadn't been a breath since its strike, but the visibly upset redhead wrapped both of his naked arms around the large metal wrist of the robotic man, squeezing and held on with an unshakeable grip. His face was red and eyes sharpened into as big of a glare as his baggy eyes could, "That was my only shirt you bigass piece of shi—" he continued to curse, but much of what could've been the most vulgar of the vernacular was inaudible since by the time he had said it, he had pivoted his foot and begun to lift, swing, and finally toss the robotic man into the air and a notable ways away from the group in a large fit of anger.

While his offense was bold and rather juvenile, he was rather successful in applying the pressure since the robotic man had been stumbling and struggling to return to a comfortable stance and by the time he had felt as if he had, Chiyuki had grumpily marathoned over to him with his spectacular speed and angry strides until they had been at a distance like before—too close for comfort. So Chiyuki began what he did before and what he specialized in, and most of which included close-ranged melee combat. He'd punch, push, kick, and otherwise strike the dent he made before and lept around and on the robotic man all ape-like to better strike the exposed areas Xiuhcoatl had created for the group as well. Many of his strikes were negated with the robotic man's own, dodged, or simply avoided, but left them both immensely occupied in the near distance.

"Character counts most when duty calls."

Oh my gods, this guy is insane, Serilda thought to herself as Doppo sniffled and quivered and screamed for her not to yell at him. In her defense she hadn’t really been yelling at him in the first place, but now was not the time to argue over it and it seemed like he wasn’t going to be reasonable about it anyway.

As Serilda fended herself from the tiny nanobots that swarmed her, she caught a glimpse as Xiuhcoatl got tossed to the side. “Xiuh!” she called out as the wolf staggered to the ground and laid there for a moment, shaking her head and trying to regain her equilibrium. Now Serilda was angry as well, but she was still being overrun by these annoying, tiny robots. She had to do something about these, and quickly.

Doppo ran past her and straight to the tesseract. With a mighty leap, he reached back and sucker punched the thing’s chassis so hard that a massive dent was left in the thick metal plating. The man inside retaliated by trying to wipe at Doppo with one of its other arms, and instead her partner latched onto the limb. With a furious scream about his shirt, he angrily threw the unit several meters back before promptly catching up to it just to unleash more unrestrained blows with his fists and feet.

Serilda tapped into the air and shaped it with her magic, creating a funnel that was only made visible by the swept up nanobots and dust that got caught in its pull. While there were hundreds if not thousands of the things, they weren’t very durable. They smacked into each other or got tossed away, tumbling to the ground in useless heaps from which they did not rise again. She ran over to Xiuh as swiftly as her legs would carry her, and by the time she got to the wolf the creature had already gotten back up on her feet. The hound was a little unsteady, but still ready to go.

Together they rushed toward where Doppo was fighting the mechanical suit. As she did, Serilda sank her magic into the ground. The earth trembled as a hole yawned open in it from a massive boulder being ripped from its confines behind the robot. Keeping an eye on Doppo’s positioning, she repeatedly whacked the chassis with the dense rock in its blind spots, using her free hand to redirect the boulder so that it was always striking the unit on the opposite side of where her partner was attacking.

By the time they had caught up to the pair, the tesseract had been quite thoroughly beaten all to hell between Doppo’s fists and Serilda’s floating rock. The woman disappeared as she ducked under the surface of the ground and emerged a couple seconds later flanking the robot. Her sword sliced right through a portion of the chassis that had been bent in enough to reveal the more tender insides, and one of its arms slumped to the ground as it was attached by little more than a few wires. Xiuh wasted no time in clamping her powerful jaws around the robotic limb and pulling on it with all her might until it ripped the rest of the way off.

From there, the three of them worked together to hack and pound away at the thing. Which each attack they did a little more damage, removed a bit more of its protective plating, exposed more of its interior, and thus were able to do even greater harm to the unit. Soon it was covered in gaping holes and exposed sparking wires. The man inside was so angry that they could hear him yelling, even through the thick plexiglass that covered his real body within.

A hole opened up in the chassis, dropping four smaller drones that immediately curled up into little balls and began to roll around at their feet. “Watch out!” Serilda warned Doppo as one rolled right over toward him. Snatching the thing with her magic, she tossed it up high into the air where it exploded only a second or two later. Whatever these things were, they were explosive. Probably programmed to seek out heat emitting life forms and blow up once they were within range. Those were certainly going to be pesky.

“I have an idea,” she told Doppo as her sword sliced through more exposed wires. “Back up for a second!” Serilda signaled for Xiuh to retreat and then launched herself into the air where she hovered several meters above the armored suit. Using her magic, she snatched up the remaining suicide drones with her magic and pulled them back toward the tesseract where she embedded them under the dented plates. The man inside scrambled to try and knock them loose, clumsily swiping at the unit with its only remaining arm.

It was no use. He couldn’t get them out. Serilda threw her sword down where it pierced one of the drones, causing it to explode. This in turn made the other two ignite, and soon most of what was left of the robot’s protective plating was blown completely off the chassis, leaving nothing but the more vulnerable -- and now rather smokey -- insides exposed for them to batter at. It wasn’t going to take much longer, now. A few more solid strikes would bring the unit down once and for all, and their job would be complete.

Taking Down the Mechanical Giant Empty Re: Taking Down the Mechanical Giant

Post by DOPPO 2nd March 2019, 12:56 pm

    Swish! Blam! Rip!

The sound of knuckles like steel, bladelike fangs, and slashing of a sword echoed through the Mysterious Canyon as the two wizards and formidable pooch hacked and slashed away at the tesseract. They had quite an effective system going; he and Miss Hilda Sinclair would lay on the pressure for the clearly infuriated man within the suit while Xiuh would strike the insurmountable amount of delicate wires inside, all while supporting each other. At the rate they were going, their victory was only some strikes away.

Miss Hilda Sinclair, unlike Chiyuki, was keeping a watchful eye out for both him and her pretty-furred pooch with each strike. Even when the familiar explosive drones projected from the robosuit and lunged at the group she was entirely aware of it and gave her mightiest attempt to deal with them safely. And safely she did deal with them, because one moment they were rushing to their sides and were combusting in the atmosphere the next. Truthfully, he could've dealt with the impact as he had before. Despite his wild punches and the irate look his eyes, he was somewhat aware of his surroundings and wouldn't have let him or Miss Hilda Sinclair get injured over something so mildly obnoxious.

Chiyuki briefly retreated when Miss Hilda Sinclair had told him to, and soon after the tesseract exploded with its own drones! By the time the denser part of the smoke cleared and the roboman was somewhat visible again, chunks and parts of its figure had been torn away and dangerous sparks flickered from within its chassis. With its current state, he would've begun to believe that if they left it to itself that it'd eventually just explode on itself again due to some sort of malfunction or something.

But despite its pitiful state, it didn't stop the messy haired redhead from striking as soon a the smoke cleared. With a wild lunge, his fist burrowed deep into the heart of the chassis and ripped out a large, shiny diamond-looking objected that glowed a magical blue light. It was quite the bestial action, like ripping the heart out of a breathing creature since his pale hands had been dripping with a fluid of a similar magical light. He figured it was the core of the suit, something like a battery as once he had torn it from its deepest depths, the suit twitched and stumbled until it was completely motionless and idle. The man inside, however, was screaming an agonizing scream and was clearly irate at his defeat, and more so at the fact that he was trapped.

Chiyuki's face was drizzled in sweat and his expression of fury diluted into something like intense irritation, his brows scrunching together and a prominent frown etching his lips. He looked at the core in his hands and sighed, watching its magical energy pulsate like a heartbeat, "What a pain in the ass," he grumbled beneath his breath. He was a considerable amount more vulgar and talkative when he used his magic as opposed to when he wasn't.

He turned to Miss Hilda Sinclair this time, "So?" he said expectantly. Now that the roboman was subdued and their job had seemingly be completed, he looked to his companion for guidance since he hadn't the faintest idea of what to do next.

The redhead chose not to ask any further questions, since she had apparently come out unscathed, or as far as he could tell, and if Xiuh had been injured he wouldn't be able to tell. Nevertheless, Chiyuki was somewhat relieved at the sight and didn't feel like coughing up apologies if it weren't the case.

Taking Down the Mechanical Giant Empty Re: Taking Down the Mechanical Giant

"Character counts most when duty calls."

It didn’t take much longer after that before the annoying man in the suit was finally defeated. Doppo moved out of the way when she warned him to and the explosions were more than enough that her partner was easily able to just rip out the shining piece that seemed to be the suit’s battery of sorts. The man within screamed his frustration, even as Serilda kicked the glass shielding open. A well aimed punch to the face was all it took to silence him, his form slumping into unconsciousness. She pulled him easily out of the machine and to the ground, where some of the destroyed wires were used as a makeshift rope to bind his hands behind his back.

Doppo stared at the item in his hand for a moment, commenting on how annoying all of this had been. She couldn’t exactly blame him for feeling that way. He asked her what was next as she finished securing the prisoner and let him slump roughly to the dirt ground. “Now we get him to prison, this pile of junk back to IHI, and us back home. Are you okay?” Serilda approached him to try and get a better look and see if he was wounded anywhere. His knuckles were a bit bloodied and bruised, which was no surprise given that he’d been smashing his fists into metal.

Assuming he’d let her, she would take his hands in hers and gently flood a bit of her magic into them. He’d feel a cool and soothing sensation trickle through his body, dulling any pains he might have and slowing the flow of his blood at any wounded points so that he wouldn’t have as much blood loss from them. “I’m not much of a healer,” she admitted to him a bit apologetically, “But I can at least keep these from hurting as much and from getting any worse until we can get you to someone that is.” Once she was done checking on him, and then on the wolf, they got their prisoner loaded into the lacrimobile. There wasn’t enough room in the vehicle for the remains of the suit, so Serilda just touched it with enough of her magic to make it weightless and had it floating along behind them as they left the Canyon.

It took a few hours for everything to be handled. The man was arrested by the Rune Knights at the first city they came back to, and the remains of the mechanical suit were picked up by the company that had hired them to complete the job. Once that was handled the two mages were finally able to return back to Ace of Spades and go back to their lives -- after Serilda made sure that Doppo received some medical attention, of course.

A few days later, Serilda found herself looking for the strange man once more. She’d given a lot of thought about him and his magic. Doppo was a peculiar individual with a bit of childlike mannerisms at times, but he seemed to mean well overall and he had done his job well, even if he’d complained about it a bit. She wanted to find a way to help him and the guild, who did their best to feed someone that had a literally empty pit for a stomach. An idea had struck her, and she’d had something commissioned for him by a wizard she knew that specialized in enchantments and crafting magic items.

The woman was unsurprised to find him in the mess hall, though this time it appeared the staff had actually given him food since he’d finally completed a job. Xiuhcoatl walked happily beside her as she approached the table where the man was and sat down across from him. In her hands was a box and a bag, both of which she set down on the surface between them and slid them over to him gently. In the bag were several shirts. Some were casual t-shirts, while a couple others were nicer button up shirts. “To replace the one you lost,” Serilda told him kindly. She’d recalled his frustration over the fact that he’d only had the one shirt and thought it prudent to provide him with more than one. “These should last you a while, but you lose these you’ll have to replace them yourself.”

She wasn’t mean when she said it. It was just another moment of her being willing to help him in a pinch but not allowing herself to be put in a position of expectation of him. If he needed more clothes in the future, he would have to do jobs and earn the jewel to buy them himself.

In the box was something slightly more puzzling. When he opened it, he would find a simple plain white plate. It felt like it was crafted from porcelain, though he’d be able to feel the magic simmering in it. “I had this plate made for you in the hopes that it will help you in the future regarding the extensive amount of food that you usually need to eat. It is capable of creating any meal that you can think of, whatever food you want to eat. It will also shape into a bowl or a cup if you want something that’s a liquid, and it has been strengthened with magic so that it can’t be broken except through exceptionally powerful magic.”

Serilda nodded to it, silently inviting him to give it a try. All he’d have to do is hold it and think of whatever meal he wanted to eat and in the blink of an eye the food would appear on the plate as if it had been freshly cooked.

    CHIYUKI

    7,029/7,000 words || @Serilda Sinclair || job info/job sign-up || short note here
Chiyuki stared at the man as he was punched into unconsciousness and dragged out of the machine by strong grip of Miss Hilda Sinclair. He was a particularly stocky man with a small head, short arms, and much of his weight concentrating around his gut. Judging by the sweat-wet white tank top and oil-stained kackies he wore, it had been obvious that he had lived, breathed, and existed only within a garage or some sort of workspace for these troublesome mechanical figures. He also smelled and odorous smell, so Chiyuki cringed at him when he realized this.

Miss Hilda Sinclair went on to detail how they'd proceed, and as she continued to explain, his mind wandered further and further off to other ideas. He wondered of when he'd get eat again and was overly self-conscious of the soft winds blowing against his brown nipples and running chills through his flesh as a result. His brows would scrunch together and he'd heave a deep and disgruntled breath through his nose. The only thing that had returned him to the present had been Miss Hilda Sinclair's sudden approach and inquiry. She had asked Chiyuki if he were okay, and while he gave her a bloody and bruised thumbs-up, she approached him anyway. His knuckles didn't ache, and while they bled, he hardly noticed they were doing so at all. It was his fault for striking so clumsily in his fit of anger and not controlling his strength as to not break his skin when he did. To him, it was eerily similar to an "oh, well, whatever!" sort of scenario. But his injuries were tended to regardless of his reassuring gesture, and a cooling sensation ran over him.

After this, the pair went on to go down that list of things to do. They delivered the still unconscious man to the nearest prison, then his belongings to that "IHI" place Miss Hilda Sinclair mentioned, and then their brief journey back home. Of course, during this proceedure, Chiyuki knew little of what he was doing—he tuned out when Hilda was speaking beforehand, afterall. He ended up mostly doing the laborous things, like carrying the man's belongings and carrying the man himself to the prison whilst following Hilda, and then he slept the entire car ride home. It was an uneventful departure back to Ace of Spades, and when they got there Chiyuki was given medical attention with a red face screaming his embarrassment. After that, the two separated without many words.

Days later, and every day since the job, Chiyuki had been purchasing dish after dish from the mess hall, and many would watch him from a distance as the clean plates and empty bowls would stack further and furhter up in only seconds. Not even a grain of rice had remained, except maybe around his mouth. But his money for food wouldn't last long, and her bitterly found himself closer and closer to doing another job. He ate with a gloom surrounding him because of this.

The gloom only diverted some people from him, but not Miss Hilda Sinclair as she found herself a seat across the table from him. Chiyuki raised his head from his bowl with a puzzled look, dipping his head in a somewhat formal greeting. "Mish Hwilda Shwinclair?" he said with a full mouth. He was obviously still shirtless and wasn't lying about his last shirt being, well, his last. And it was also true that his magic required the conservation of energy, so his greeting was extraordinarily lackadaisical. He watched her as she placed two things onto the table—a box and a bag, and both of which were slid over to him like some questionable transaction, in his eyes. His look became even more puzzled than earlier before she explained what it was, and instantly he set his bowl of rice and chicken down and began to peek and rummage through the bag of shirts.

Chiyuki pulled out the softest shirt he groped and instantly slid it over his head and let it swallow his torso. He slumped back into his chair with an satisfied look, letting his arms hang over the sides. ". . .Thanks." he sputtered. It was all he could say in his current state, weary and weak, like a ragdoll. But he was quick to return to his erect posture to open up the box, where an empty and shiny-like-new plate sat. Again, a bewildered expression overtook his face.

When he took the plate out and held it gingerly, a whole rotisserie chicken came to mind. And like some god had possessed the plate, a whole rotisserie chicken appeared on it! It was greasy and had beautiful brown skin, and the meat in between looked so moist, tender, and it shimmered in the light, a clear sign it was juicy too! He marveled and thought of all this whilst Miss Hilda Sinclair was explaining it, and it was the first time he had registered everything she had said!

The redhead broke into tears, his eyes glossy and cheeks red like tomatoes. He wasn't crying! He was sobbing! His entire face was wet with tears and every ounce of energy concentrated in his pretty-blue eyes, pulsating happiness and joy! A rush of relief came upon him, his entire body trembled with vigor! Suddenly, the energy reserved for his magic was finally tapped into, and his entire being was no longer half-hearted or lacking spirit. With one ferocious movement, he lifted himself from his seat (nearly having it fall to the ground!), leaned over the table to grasp Hilda Sinclair's hand and gingerly held it with both of his bigger ones in a trembling, firm grip! "Are you God? You're God, aren't you, Miss Serilda?" Chiyuki continued to sob, and many of his tears dripped from his chin onto the table, the steamy chicken stinging his eyes. He also hadn't realized that he had finally said her name correctly, but he was still wholly convinced it was "Hilda Sinclair." It was his knack for recalling unbearably small details that began to show.

"Character counts most when duty calls."

It was hard to tell if the man was still being just his typical, sluggish self or if he had truly been so touched by the gift of the shirts that he honestly didn’t know how to react to it. Either way, Serilda could sense the gratitude was genuine, particularly when he immediately pulled one out and drew it over his head to cover his still bare torso. It was nothing compared to the thanks she was about to get from him over the second gift.

Serilda looked visibly flustered when the man suddenly burst into tears once he understood what he’d just been given. A whole roasted chicken sat on the plate she’d had enchanted for him, looking about as perfect as a roasted chicken could be and smelling absolutely divine, but for once the man didn’t actually seem immediately interested in eating. She’d expected him to be appreciative, perhaps even relieved at the knowledge that he wouldn’t have to spend all of his money on food constantly, but this was far from what she’d prepared herself for.

“Whoa, hey…” she said in a soft tone, scrambling in her pockets to try to find a handkerchief for him. “It’s alright, Chiyuki…” Before she could actually locate the cloth, the man practically threw himself out of his chair to reach over and take one of her hands gently in both of his. He asked her if she was God, and her blue eyes flew wide open in shock. “No, I’m definitely not God,” Serilda assured him gently, a small smile finding its way to her lips. “I’m just a plain human being, I promise you. However, I’m also your guild mate and it’s our responsibility to take care of each other. I just hope it helps make your life a little easier.”
