    Spoiler:

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

    Great.
It was one thing to work a job with Serilda – at this point, he was used to it. In fact, he had gone out of his way to ask for her help already once. She was a reliable partner that had his back when the going got rough. And after everything that had happened with that Lexa debacle, he had opened up more to her than anyone else. He honestly trusted her completely. But that did not mean he was happy about having to share a bedroom with her, let alone the honeymoon suite.

He’d been asked to take a job from Fairy Tail concerning a murder mystery party. He had a mind to say no, if only because named parties like that were not lacking in people, but no one else was available. So begrudgingly he had… agreed, if that was the correct word for it, and had invited Serilda to help him out. It seemed like a relatively easy job for a few thousand jewel and also presented an opportunity. He had been meaning to ask if she would be interested in joining the party thing he had joined Markus in. She had been helpful every time they’d worked together and though she could occasionally be a pain in his ass, he knew she did good work. As Oak Town was far away, Fairy Tail had offered to book the rooms for them. Plural.

But apparently the inn was packed and someone, somewhere hadn’t contacted them in time to get two rooms. There was only one left and it was the honeymoon suite, the lavish, gushy room for newlyweds looking to celebrate their union. Neither Serilda nor Mythal were any part of that and the fact that they would be spending a night in the same room was… strange. So when the party started and Mythal had taken his post by the front door, he was understandably grouchy already. And just as he assumed, the inn was filled to the brim with party-goers looking to take part in this murder faux-paus. His job was basically that of the bouncer; making sure no one not invited got in.

"This night cannot get any worse,” he grumbled as he stared out morbidly at the mass of heads moving about the dining hall.

"Character counts most when duty calls."

It had been more than a little frustrating to hear that she was going to be stuck in a room with Mythal -- a honeymoon suite, of all things -- but Serilda dealt with it. She assumed such a room would have at least a couch of some kind, so it wasn’t like she was going to have to sleep next to him.

Unlike Mythal, she wasn’t totally annoyed at being there. Serilda was used to large social gathers, and a part of her actually thought this kind of event sounded like fun. For now she was assigned at the door with Mythal, screening patrons as they came in the door and making sure they didn’t have any weapons or contraband items. It was a perfect job for her, considering that she could sense the shapes of any objects people had on them whether or not she was actually patting them down or physically looking through their bags -- though she still look through the bags with her eyes, anyway, so as not to appear lazy.

Her grouchy partner grumbled under his breath when there was a lull in entrants. “It’s not that bad,” Serilda told him, doing her best to try to pull him out of the funk he’d been in since they’d gotten there. “I know there’s more people here than you like to deal with, but… hey, at least they are focusing on themselves and not trying to talk to you, right?”

She paused to search through the purse of another incoming patron. Once Serilda was certain there was nothing suspicious in the clutch, she waved the lady through. “All you have to do is stand around for a couple hours while these people have some fun. The second shift takes over for us at four, and then you can hole yourself upstairs and not have to deal with them for a bit.” Since the event itself took place over a span of twenty-four hours, the hotel staff had hardly expected those hired for security to be present at all times. They had hired on several shifts of wizards to make sure the security force was always fresh and alert. Once their shift was over, Mythal could hide away in relative isolation for a few hours and relax again.

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

Mythal glanced over Serilda, dutifully performing her bag checking duties. Even as she complained, she was quick to point out how unfair he was being. After all, the people were far more focused on preparing for the ‘murder’ and only barely paid him any attention. There were a lot of them but at this point, it was nothing he wasn’t used to moving between. He sighed but managed a small smile. "Yeah, alright. You’re right,” he said, shaking his head. Story of their partnership thus far. With his rumblings basically deflated, he stood there and did his proper duty; asking for names and proof of invitation, checking names off the list and even having to tell some people that it was an invite only soiree. There wasn’t much action and excitement but that was fine with him – easy jewel was just as spendable as hard earned jewel.

"By the way uh… I can take the floor,” he said, as he waved some people inside. Realizing he hadn’t fully explained his thought, he continued. "In the room. Unless there’s some kind of couch or something, I’ll just crash near the door. Kinda used to sleepin’ on hard surfaces.” He’d spent many a night and day curled up in alleyways and on dirt patches to get his rest. It was only a few minutes later that one of the other inn patrons came over and signaled that they had reached their capacity and were prepared to shut the door. Mythal checked in the last couple of guests and then took the lead, closing the doors and locking them. Apparently that would set the atmosphere of the mystery.

Now their jobs were even easier. All they really had to do was stand around and make sure no one acted out of sorts. Some people could get excited over the prospect of the murder mystery but when it came down to it; stage fright would cause them to act erratically – even dangerously. But that wasn’t common so they were told they were free to mingle and enjoy themselves if they felt like it. Mythal wasn’t one for mingling but he had confirmed that the bar was open for everyone. "I’m gonna grab a drink. Just to sooth my nerves. You want anything?” He asked her. Once she had confirmed an order or not, he would slide between the many patrons as best he could.

Once he hit the bar, it was no easy task to get the tender’s attention. People all around him were talking loudly and raising their hands for second or third drinks. The poor man behind the counter looked completely aghast with trying to keep up. Mythal sighed and leaned against the mahogany barrier, waiting patiently. “Guy’s got quite the job, doesn’t he?” A heavily accented voice said from beside him. Mythal glanced over and found a dark, strikingly handsome man standing beside him, a wry little grin on his face. He had sharp features; a firm brow, sharp nose and a broad chin to go with his tough-looking jaw. His jet black hair was brushed back, long and shiny as it ran down to the small of his neck. He was dressed in a rather extravagant jacket that almost touched the floor, made of a deep forest green cloth with black trim. He bore a suit underneath that hugged him tight, betraying just how trim and thin he was. But perhaps the most intriguing part of him was his brilliant green eyes, that seemed to glimmer in the light.

Mythal had heard this accent before, when he had gone with Nessa to Seven. "Seems it,” Mythal said simply, not exactly looking to talk.

“Methinks he’s not the only one with a tough job tonight, eh?” the man asked, raising his hand up to wave the bartender down. “What’re you havin’, fella?”

Mythal was a bit stunned. This guy was getting him a drink? He scratched his chin and gave the man his order, along with Serilda’s if she went ahead and asked for anything. "Uh… thanks,” he said, raising the glass in thanks.

“Think nothin’ of it, friend. I’m sure you’ll repay me someday,” the mysterious man returned the raised glass and then slid back into the crowd, off to find his own business.

Mythal was so enraptured by the meeting that he nearly ran into bus boy pushing his way through the crowd. The boy pushed right by him, shooting a curse at him and telling him to watch where he was going. The God Slayer snorted and shook his head as he walked back to Serilda with the drink in hand. The bus boy had come swiftly out from one of the side rooms – probably preparing to start the murder mystery. He’d hate to have that job.

"Character counts most when duty calls."

Serilda wasn’t actually sure if her words would help him or not, but he did seem to pick up a bit. Hell, he even smiled a little.

After a couple more moments of screening people as they came in, Mythal spoke up again. She gave him an odd look, not quite sure where he was going with the first statement. When he followed it up by explaining about the room accomodations, she told him, “Don’t worry about it. I’m sure there’s at least a couch, so we’ll both have a place that’s not the floor. Those kind of rooms tend to go all out with the furniture, and if we ask they can probably provide us with a folding bed for one of us to use. We’ll figure it out when we get up there.”

The woman genuinely didn’t seem concerned over it, despite how properly she always carried herself. There was always an answer for everything, and she was confident that neither of them would have to sleep on the floor. Besides, they had already spent several days cramped up in a dirty gave in the middle of a desert together -- one night in the same hotel room wasn’t going to be the end of the world.

The word came for them to close the door so the event could begin in earnest. Mythal let in the last couple people before locking the place up. Then, he let her know he was going to get a drink. Ironically enough, despite the fact that he had openly proclaimed himself as a drunk when they first met, this was the first time he’d actually made any effort to drink around her. They had been told by the hotel staff that it was perfectly fine for them to enjoy the festivities as well, including the drinks. Provided, of course, that they didn’t have too many. Serilda thought about declining. She was working, after all. But in the end, she shrugged. A single drink surely wouldn’t be a problem. “A glass of wine? Red, preferably.”

Off he went as Serilda stood at her current post, watching as the event coordinators got everything set up and ready to go. They were announcing the rules and guidelines for the game to the patrons, who were mostly gathered together in one central area for the moment. Many of the different rooms were set up with different clues, and they were allowed to venture into any unlocked door that had been left opened for the event. Before long, everyone had spread out once more into their private groups of friends and were chatting happily together, sharing what clues they had already been assigned on their cards and figuring out where they wanted to go.

Mythal returned with their drinks, and Serilda thanked him as she accepted her glass. She gave it a gentle swirl in the stemmed crystal to aerate it before taking a sip. “Well… we may as well move around. I don’t know about you, but standing here for six hours sounds dull, and we should probably keep a presence through the hotel anyway.” Assuming he didn’t protest it, they started wandering the halls and rooms together randomly, keeping an eye on the people. Aside from the occasion patron that broke character to ask for directions to a bathroom or other location in the building, they were mostly left alone. The staff had given them buttons to wear on their clothes that marked them as not participating in the event, so none of the players ever bothered them for clues.

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

"Glass of wine? How fancy,” he said, his tone a bit more teasing than he meant it to be. But he took her order and was sure to remember it when the strange man had come and taken the initiative to get the order for him. Once he returned, handing the glass to her, she suggested they move about the inn and actually act like security. It wasn’t a terrible idea; he was curious about the size of the place. For an establishment called an ‘inn’ it was surprisingly large and lavish. It had to be if it was going to hold a murder mystery party.

They traveled about, exploring the inn to near capacity as the guests began the process of discussing clues and making plans to how they would handle the murder. Luckily the two of them had buttons that identified them as staff and not part of the game. The only time anyone bothered them was when they needed directions to the head. Overall, they were practically left alone. And for two solid hours, the job wasn’t half bad. People were minding their own business, Serilda and Mythal could go wherever they wanted save for guest rooms and the worst thing they had to deal with was an overly frisky couple that couldn’t wait to make it to their rooms and tried to use a bathroom to… bump uglies. A stern warning was enough to send them packing, even though Mythal could barely stifle a laugh at it.

It had just struck midnight, the clock in the main hall ringing loudly to alert the patrons of the late hour. Mythal had stopped up on the top floor that looked out onto the floor of the hall, resting his elbows on the bannister as he watched everyone from above. The side room that he hadn’t paid much attention to earlier was opened as one man was trying to find some clues and there, lying on the floor was a body. There was a yell – but one of excitement rather than horror. “Oh no!” He said, the man trying his hardest to sound horrified but too excited that he’d started the game. “A body! Who could have done such a thing?”

"Well here we go,” Mythal said to his partner, leaning a bit forward as he watched the entire room turn and attempt to move towards the door. Everyone was chattering at once, talking about moving the body carefully out in the main room so they could observe. It seemed like the game was in full swing… until a sharp, actually terrified shriek tore the reverie to shreds.

“My husband! That’s my husband!,” one of the women cried, her own elation gone as she fell to her knees at the door. “H-He’s not part of the game! Harold! Harold!!”

The color drained from Mythal’s face, a gasp rattling out of his mouth. "What… the hell?” He barely managed to say.

"Character counts most when duty calls."

They walked around for a couple hours together and, while neither of them would probably admit it, it was actually fairly pleasant. The two of them had never really gotten the chance to just relax and take it easy during the times that they’d spent together. They were either focused on a job, or on their way to one, or recovering from exhaustion and wounds after a job. Literally everything about their relationship to one another revolved around work, and while tonight technically fell into that same category it the environment was stress free, even fun.

For quite some time, the most interesting thing they’d had to deal with was a couple that apparently got their rocks off trying to have a good time in public. The two of them dealt with the couple in swift fashion, Serilda stern and Mythal failing to mask his amusement over the situation.

Eventually, they found themselves on an upper floor leaning against a balcony that overlooked the main hall. “This is kind of nice,” Serilda mused, her eyes watching the throngs of people idly. “We should take jobs like this more often, instead of ones that are constantly trying to kill us.” It was sort of a joke, but not really. Aside from the night they met, the two of them had gotten involved in some pretty heavy stuff every time they’d worked with one another. Serilda found that she was enjoying just hanging out and not having to worry about peoples’ lives.

Of course, that all came crashing down real damn fast.

There was a yell of excitement that drew both of their eyes over to the same area. Mythal commented that the game was finally beginning. “Looks like it. Took them long enough.” But the moment was quickly ruined by a very real, blood curdling scream. It took a second or two for the woman to register that it was authentic grief and not just someone with very good acting skills.

Serilda vaulted herself over the balcony and flew down to the scene as quickly as her magic would let her. “MOVE!” she ordered, the tone of her voice so stern that the crowds of people trying to get a look all immediately parted to give her space. The Voidmage practically skidded to a halt next to the man on the ground, who was lying face down on the floor in a puddle of his own blood. His wife was sobbing over him, saying his name over and over. Carefully, Serilda checked the body for a pulse and turned him over enough that she could try to feel for any air coming through his nose or mouth.

    Nothing.

Panic shot through her body as one of many conflicted emotions. Gruesome images that she had long worked past over the last five years suddenly clawed their way back into vivid existence in her mind’s eye, threatening to overtake her. Thankfully, years longer of Aster’s stern training was stronger than previous memories, at least for the moment. Turning toward one of the other members of the security that night, Serilda said, “Get the rest of the security and staff together and make sure this building is locked down tight. I don’t want anyone leaving! I don’t care what excuses they give, not a single person exits this building under any circumstances until I give the all clear! Have the staff escort people to their rooms until we have more information, and tell the hotel manager I want him here now.”

The younger wizard must have known she wasn’t playing around because even though he had been nearly transfixed on the dead body, her tone woke him up enough to spur him into action. As she watched him grow, she saw the crowd becoming more restless. They watched in horror as the scene unfolded, and a frightening tension was growing in the air. They were going to need to deal with that sooner rather than later.

Looking at Mythal, she told him, “I’ll be right back.”

She left him momentarily with the grieving woman and pushed everyone back outside in to the main hall. By the time she finished with that the manager had shown up at a run. He, too, looked inside in horror. “Get these people to their rooms. Do whatever it takes to keep them calm. Do not give them any information until we have figured out what happened.”

“But, I--” He started to protest.

“Don’t argue with me, just do it! If you have a way to contact the Rune Knights or any other local law enforcement, do that too. Then come back and meet us here.”

Serilda shut the door, blocking the hungry view of the patrons from the heart wrenching scene in the room. Trying not to shake, she moved back over to the body and the woman sobbing over it. “What do you see?” Serilda asked Mythal, knowing his superior senses might be able to pick out more than just the obvious.

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

He had to admit, it was rather nice to just sit back and not have multitudes of enemies bearing down on them. As much as he enjoyed the jewel that came from combat jobs, it was a bit relieving to hang out and play guard duty. He glanced at her and let out a small chuckle. "Won’t hear me complainin’,” he said, reaching up to finish his drink. Perhaps even more amazing was that, in those two hours spent together, he’d only had two drinks – and this was his second he was just finishing then! Was this what it felt like to be… respectable?

But before he could consider wondering more on that, all hell broke loose. The woman’s shriek tore the peace apart and the entire party had now turned an ugly shade of concerned. Serilda cleared the bannister in one fell swoop, landing on the ground and taking off to take the lead on the investigation. "One easy job, that’s all I ask…” he grumbled as he followed after her, not bothering to use any of his magic to soften his landing. As he was pushing through the crowd, he got to play audience to all of their concerns.

“Oh my lords, is she saying that’s a real dead body?”

“Oh my word, that can’t be possible! Someone in here actually is a murderer!”

“This must be some kind of trick. It just has to be!”

The panic was beginning to ebb and emanate off of them, each one of the rich and uptight guests questioning their own mortality. "Erry’one just take it easy and relax,” he spoke up, knowing he really had no option in the matter. He was the security and that meant he had to try and keep the peace. But as his words met the ears of those around him, they all seemed to turn on him at the same time. And it was not a look of appreciation for his advice – no, in fact, he could see the gears turning towards a disastrous conclusion. Luckily he managed to push through the crowds just then, as Serilda was barking orders at the other security. He walked into the room and stood beside the body, eyeing it carefully. The Voidmage excused herself, willingly throwing herself back to push the crowd back into the main hall.

"Hey brainiac, help her up. She doesn’t need to see this,” he said, talking to the other security guard who was hovering by the door. His tone wasn’t as sharp as Serilda’s had been but luckily, her orders from before had shaken him loose like his pal. He came in and bent down, taking the woman carefully as she bawled over her husband’s body. "Sorry… ‘bout your husband,” he said after her, though he knew it wouldn’t do much. Serilda had reentered and shut the door behind her, the guard now carefully opening it and walking her out of the room to leave them alone.

She asked his input and he ran his hand over his jaw. Carefully he reached over and turned the man over onto his back fully, so they could see his chest. His once-pristine white shirt was a deep crimson from the blood that had soaked into it. "Stabbed half a dozen times in the chest. Guy was mad; if he wanted to do it quick, he’d’ve just put it right to his heart. He was down on his front so… guy who did it probably grabbed him from behind, covered his mouth and just…” he petered off as he thought about it.

"Earlier there was a bellhop who came out of here. I didn’t think anything of it but…” He had moved through the crowd rather quickly. There were a dozen scents within the room so deciphering which one was the man would be a challenge and a half. He scratched his chin as he stood up. "We should find ‘em. He’s the only lead we got.”

He opened the door with the intent to leave but as it swung open, there was the crowd once more. They had pushed back the security officers trying to keep the line, pressing them practically up against the walls. When it was Mythal that was the first to show, a wave of agitation entered the air.

“Him! That’s the guy!” Someone near the middle said. “I’ve never seen his like before. He looks like a homeless person and he was hired for security? I bet that ruffian took the job just so he could get in here and rob us!”

"I ain’t here to rob ya; I’m the guy tryin’ to keep you all alive. I’m a Fairy Tail wizard after all.” But before he even finished the sentence, he knew he had said the wrong thing.

“Fairy Tail!? Those blasted dark wizards?! They’re letting dark wizards on security now?! This is outrageous!” Another man hollered.

“He’s the murderer! He murdered that woman’s husband and he’s going to kill all of us too!”

Oh this was turning into an entire ordeal. Mythal rolled his eyes and turned left, walking against the wall. It seemed the crowd followed him, though they had certainly moved back a step or two once he revealed where he hailed from. Yet a few of them were realizing they had strength in numbers and he could see that a handful moved to the staircase, which was exactly where he was headed.

“I saw him wandering the halls and going into rooms earlier! He was probably planning on sneaking in at night and murdering us all!” Another woman cried.

    "That’s not-…”

“What are you people waiting for? He is the murderer! Arrest him now! If you don’t, we’ll take matters into our own hands!”

    "You all just-…”

“Scurrying about like a rat. Him and that whore…”

"Alright, that’s it!” Mythal’s temper flared and he slammed his foot into the ground, nearly fracturing the wooden beam beneath. That shut the crowd up instantly, the full lot of them taking a step back and a few of them even gasping. "You idiots can keep mouthin’ off all you want but do it where I don’t need to stare at your stupid, pompous faces. I’ll find the bastard that did this and wave his dumb ass in front of your faces just to spite you. And if any of you try and stop me…” His gaze flowered as he dropped his head, staring at the crowd practically through his brows. "I’ll make you hurt. Bad.

"Character counts most when duty calls."

Serilda watched at Mythal turned the man’s body over. There were several lacerations on his chest as evidence of cause of death. Her partner figured the murderer probably came up from behind him, which would explain why the man had fallen on his face instead of his back, despite the frontal wounds. He was starting to list off some other observations when Mythal paused, his mind recollecting something: strange behavior he’d noticed earlier about the bellhop that worked for the hotel. Serilda briefly recalled what the young man looked like, having taken note of him along with any other staff she’d seen that day, but she hadn’t interacted with him at all.

He was right, though. For now, that was the only lead they had.

By now the manager had come back into the room. As Mythal got up to start his search, the manager informed Serilda that some local authorities had been called and would be there soon. She explained to him their suspicions regarding the bellhop, and the man admitted after giving it some thought that he hadn’t seen the boy in a while. The Voidwalker let him know that if any of his people saw him, she and Mythal were to be informed at once. Then, she left the manager and the other security personnel to wait by the body and make sure the crime scene wasn’t tampered with any further.

By the time she got back outside the room and caught up to Mythal, she arrived just in time to witness him being harrassed and crowded in on by the throngs of people that still weren’t making their way to their rooms. They were accusing him of being there to rob and kill him, mostly because he didn’t present himself as someone this high class snobs would consider respectable. Finally, Mythal had enough and he turned on them. The people went silent at his subtle but effective display of intimidation, as he told them to stay out of his way so he could find the real killer.

Serilda wasn’t terribly thrilled that he’d threatened these people, but that feeling was heavily muted by the fact that she really couldn’t blame him for doing it. Unfortunately, his words had only fed some of their suspicions. The whispers started up again, and she could hear them continuing to voice the same thoughts and concerns to one another, just a bit quieter in the hopes that he wouldn’t hear them. Of course they weren’t aware of his exceptional hearing.

She decided to intervene before this came to blows, knowing that they didn’t have time to deal with this. While these people blocked their way, the only trail they had to follow was getting cold. Serilda stepped out beside Mythal, her stance commanding to the point where it was nearly haughty. Head high, shoulders straight, hands clasped behind her back like she usually stood when not in a hurry.

“This man is my partner on this job, and I am only here because he asked me to assist him, despite the fact that I am a member of Sabertooth.” More whispers drifted around, this time commenting on her own guild which was currently much more respected than Fairy Tail was. “If you accuse him, you accuse me as well. Do you really think a member of Sabertooth would willingly ally with a crook and a murderer? Now stand aside and let us pass. We have a real murderer to find, and we’re not going to waste time standing here and entertaining your naive and juvenile accusations.”

The people were none too pleased about being treated like children, but they weren’t arguing her. She suspected that at least a couple people recognized her; nobility was easy to spot when one cared about recognizing such things, and even though she never said her name they clearly recognized her as a figure of authority, even if they weren’t sure about Mythal. “You were instructed by the manager and security to return to your rooms until this investigation is complete. If you don’t do so at once, I will make sure each and every one of you present are held liable for impeding the investigation of a murder. Do I make myself clear?”

That was the final threat, it seemed. They had reputations to worry about, and couldn’t afford to be arrested on such charges. The people parted to allow Mythal and Serilda to pass before making their way back to their rooms. “Ignorant morons,” the woman muttered to herself irritably as they quickly made their way upstairs.

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

Mythal stared the most violent of daggers at the people in front of him, his hands curled into tight fists as his gaze snapped between each pair of eyes. This was the scum of humanity before him – the reason that he stayed away from people and stuck to his own direction. It was people like this, with their snobby attitude and their pompous titles and their quick-to-jump-to-conclusions that just irked him more than anything else. Oh, what he wouldn’t give to just get away with punching one of them and he seriously considered it too. But in the end, he held back; if only to keep this job from going more sideways than it already had. But the way they continued to whisper now just irked him.

Serilda stepped up and took control, a movement he thought would be to chastise him for his words. But instead she turned it on them, giving them a verbal lashing for their attitudes and assumptions. When she dropped the name of Sabertooth, there was a direct difference in reaction to his guild and hers. It was like ‘oh, we can believe her, she’s from a real guild. It wasn’t her fault at all but it still caused him to scoff and walk away temporarily, heading over to the bar. As Serilda made all of the privileged men and women in the room feel like naughty schoolchildren, he yanked the closest bottle he could reach from the bar and brought it up. As the group finally gave in and began to part, Mythal returned with the drink in hand, taking a hearty swallow from it. The sight of the temporary security downing booze straight from the bottle wasn’t going to help things but at this point, he couldn’t give a flying.

"I don’t think he went upstairs but it was two hours ago I saw him. If I were him, I’d be trying to hide in the least obvious spot… is there a cellar in this place?” He asked her, looking around idly.

"Character counts most when duty calls."

Truthfully, Serilda had only started making her upstairs because she’d thought that was where Mythal was going when the people blocked him off. “If you last saw him two hours ago, he could be anywhere in this building… If he’s even still here.” She was talking more to herself than to him, giving his words thought. Hopefully the man had been locked up in the building with everyone else, unable to escape. “Maybe we’ll get lucky and he’s the kind of psycho that prefers to stick around to see the aftermath of his-- what are you doing?”

She turned around to follow him back downstairs, trusting his logic. When she did, Serilda saw that at some point the man had gone and grabbed an entire bottle of alcohol. By the look of the bottle, he had already guzzled a solid portion of it. “Are you insane?!” She asked him incredulously, keeping her voice quiet so as not to draw attention to the argument. The woman stared at him in a mixture of shock and anger. “We are trying to find a murderer, and you decide that now is a good time to down a whole bottle?!”

Honestly, Serilda couldn’t believe what she was seeing. He really was a drunk. He hadn’t acted this way on any of their past jobs, but he also hadn’t really had access to alcohol in times past. This was the first mission they’d worked together where drinks were readily available, and at the first sign of something making him angry he didn’t even hesitate to dive right in.

“All you’re doing is proving them right in their eyes. I hope you realize that. Do you really have no pride for your appearance or for the guild you represent?!” Reaching out, she attempted to snatch the bottle away from him, which he would surely see coming and keep her from doing. The woman would try a couple of times, to no avail -- he was stronger than her, after all. “Fine, we’ll do this the hard way,” she finally told him.

Holding her hand toward the bottle, she altered the particles inside the glass. The alcohol inside emptied itself onto the floor. Still yelling at him in hushed tones, Serilda looked him dead in the eye and said, “A man was murdered tonight. On our watch. And you’re such a slave to your anger that you choose to make love to a bottle of alcohol instead of focusing on finding the piece of trash that killed him. You want the future to be a better place? Get your priorities straight.

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

Mythal honestly hadn’t realized that he’d never drank in front of Serilda; he absorbed the liquid so quickly and constantly that he just assumed he had. And he had never halted himself during a job before, having had a complete success rate even with it. So it was a bit of a surprise to hear just how angry she was upon seeing him with the bottle of booze. He looked at her, a bit stunned by how quickly her tone had shifted back to anger. But it wasn’t the upright, righteous anger she had used to laid waste to the imbeciles from the mystery game – it was a similar rage she had thrown at him in Desierto. And much like then, her stance that practically emanated an aura of being better than him, caused his mood to darken yet again. "Listen, I-…” he started, preparing to explain himself. Ironically, he had a valid excuse for grabbing it.

But apparently, she was having none of that. She tore into him; broke down his appearance -- even though he had cleaned up – and laid to waste any glimmer of pride he may have had in himself or in his guild. His anger reached a boiling point so fast that when he whipped the bottle away from her, it nearly made a sound as it cut through the air. He kept it away from her hands, his eyes burning and blazing with fury. When it seemed like he had succeeded in avoiding her grip, she simply held her hand out and phased the booze onto the ground. His eyes snapped to the bottle then to the puddle on the floor and finally back to her as she laid in with her last tidbits of anger. And when she brought up what he had told her, what he had opened up to her and no one else, that was it.

The minute her last phrase finished, the ground cracked. He didn’t need to stomp and slam his foot down; the wooden beams beneath his feet shrieked as the pressure underneath him broke a line right through their hearts. He was quiet for a moment, wrangling his anger in so he could speak from a place of… wisdom? Probably wasn’t the right word but he wasn’t going to stomp away and let her think he was throwing a tiff. "Zui…Quan,” he said slowly,  his voice still firm and solid despite the embers beneath. "Ever hear of it, princess? The Drunken Fist; a fighting style that incorporates alcohol to limber the user up and raises their senses so they can move more fluidly in combat. Also a great style to use when you’re walking into a, more than likely, ambush.” With that, he sent the bottle flying away from him, the empty container shattering on the wall.

He cocked his head slightly as he continued to stare at her. "Don’t pretend to criticize my pride in anythin’ when its quite clear the only think you’re worried about is how you’ll look. That you’re ashamed that you’re partnerin’ with some kind of boozehound. See that?” He asked, pointing towards the puddle of alcohol. "A boozer would’ve fallen to the ground trying to grab at that or screamed in agony. I ain’t screamin’; All I am is my supposed partner didn’t trust me enough to think that maybe, just friggin’ maybe, I know what I’m doin’ half the damn time. People die, Ice Queen; we did all we could to keep them alive but we can’t be everywhere at once. Someone got the better of us, shit happens, we fix it after. We ain’t gods; all we can do is the best we got.”

He leaned a bit closer, lowering his voice. "I told you that people like you were the ones that would make a better future, not me. I have my priorities straight. Or at least I did until I went and trusted you to keep something to yourself, Queen Bitch Blabber Mouth. Last time I make that mistake. So here’s hopin’ those assholes aren’t ready for us and have a trap ready for us wherever they’re at. Because if I trip it, I’m gonna make sure I look you right in the eyes as I die and say thanks.”

He pulled himself away, his hands furiously shoving themselves into his pockets as he walked… well, he wasn’t sure where he was walking. Kitchen maybe – the basement might be near there so they could store their meat and stuff. He stopped a few feet away. "No, you know what. Do me a favor, besides shutting yer trap. Go search upstairs or somethin’; I don’t want that massive stick hangin’ out yer ass to clatter down the steps and let them know I’m comin’.”

And with that, he went off to find the basement doors.

"Character counts most when duty calls."

In Serilda’s defense, Mythal had never told her that his magic was heightened by the consumption of alcohol, and what reason would she have to figure that out on her own? Not only had she never heard of such a ridiculous style of fighting, but never in any of her studies had she ever heard of a type of Slayer magic that could operate that way.

The ground beneath them cracked, and there was a brief moment of fear in her eyes. It was quickly replaced with stubborn anger again, refusing to back down even in the face of someone she was fairly certain would kick her ass in a fight. He would know by the way her brow twitched that she was unaware of any kinds of drunken styles of fighting that existed.

When he accused her of only caring what she looked like in the middle of all this, the rage inside of her intensified. She drew in such a deep, sharp breath that her shoulders rose and her jaw tightened, clearly offended. That only grew when he accused her of not trusting him, which was far from true. Hell, he should know by that that wasn’t correct, but once again the two of them were so bloated with ire at one another that neither of them were really thinking straight.

He ended it all with accusing her of passing around his secrets, to which her jaw actually dropped in indignation. What the hell was he talking about? Mythal turned to storm away, making sure she knew that if he died it would be all her fault, and emphasizing that he actually wanted her to go basically anywhere that he wasn’t.

Unfortunately for him, it wasn’t going to be as simple as that. He should know by now that she was far too stubborn to back down just because he barked back at her. Blabber mouth?!” she screeched at him under her breath, following him down the stairs after only a moment’s hesitation to process how truly angry she was at him just now. “I haven’t said a word to anyone about any of the shit you’ve told me!”

“And how exactly was I supposed to know that you use alcohol to help you fight? The day we met, you told me you were a drunk! Your words, not mine! How was I supposed to take that? Becoming a better fighter by consuming alcohol? Who ever heard of such a ludicrous concept?! And for that matter, if I didn’t trust you, if I wasn’t concerned about your image, do you really think I’d have made sure all those people were more than aware that the only reason I had even come tonight was because you asked me to?!”

Down they stormed toward the cellar in the basement, Mythal probably hating her more and more every inch of the way as she refused to back down. “Well, I hate to break it to you, you ungrateful souse, but you’re not getting rid of me that easily. I’m here, as always, whether you like it or not, so you better get used to it.”

If anyone wound up killing Mythal tonight, it was definitely going to be her. She was pissed enough to throttle him by his neck with her bare hands. In fact, Serilda had half a mind to tell him that when she felt something move in her senses. Whipping around, she snagged hold of the empty particles in the air and twisted them, calling upon the suctioning power of the Void. The club that had been thrown at them got pulled off trajectory and, at the direction of her hand, bend around them like in orbit before flying back to the man who had thrown it and smacking him in the face.

As he stumbled back and growled in pain and anger, Serilda caught a glimpse of the bellboy trying to duck out of another door in the cellar. “I’ll deal with this idiot,” she told Mythal, hoping he wasn’t so blinded by his anger that he’d let the kid get away just to stay and argue with her.

The man picked up his club, blood dripping down from a broken nose. “You bitch!” he spat at her.

“Yeah, I get it. Everyone hates me. Get in line.”

As he came at her, she simply stood and waited for him. Serilda didn’t have her sword on her, as it hadn’t seemed proper at the time to carry one around at an event like this, but she wouldn’t need one to beat this guy. He swung at her and thought he was going to land a point blank shot on her temple. Instead, he didn’t have time to process his own horror as the club swung right through her body like she was made of nothing but air.

He stepped back, scrambling to compensate for his lost footing. “What the hell are you? Some kind of illusion?”

She retaliated by calling upon the use of her Void Step power, giving her an extra boost of speed. Leaping up to him before he got a chance to put his guard up, Serilda punched him right in the stomach. The woman may not have been physically as strong as Mythal was, but she still packed a nasty punch. “You wish,” she told the henchman with a tone that could freeze over hell itself. With one more flick of her wrist, the wizard lifted a bottle of wine off one of the shelves on the other side of the room and flung it at him. The glass smashed into the side of his head and he dropped, unconscious.

Post by Mythal Ragnos 12th December 2018, 5:00 pm

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

No matter how her shrill voice tried to keep quiet, it was still shrill. And he was done with her; he’d said his piece, his anger still brimming like a volcano on the verge of a complete meltdown. As he headed out through the kitchen, she followed him, her grating complaints and anger thrown uselessly at his back. But Gods, she just kept going, didn’t she?! As he headed down the steps, on and on she went without pause or break or even breath. "Do you ever shut up?” he snapped back at her, not bothering to turn around. Ungrateful souse, get used to her being around – that was a laugh. This was the absolute last time he was doing anything with her, job or not. He even caught a whiff of her scent, he was going to turn right around and head back the way he came.

For, as utterly insane as it was to think it, he did honestly felt she had betrayed his trust in that moment. Even whispered, he felt like the walls had ears, each one of those guests thrusting their hearing holes against the doors so they could hear the outcome of the investigation. Humans were like that – wasn’t that something she had so nicely presented to him? Sparkly fireworks caused them to pause and ooh and aah and look, the two security guards are fighting, let’s listen in on their shit and my word, is that one of his secrets she just told? And how the hell were they supposed to sneak up on this murderer if she was going to banshee the entire way down?

Turns out, they wouldn’t. They had just reached the ground floor when someone from behind them launched a club at them. Serilda was quick to catch it and spun it around them, even as Mythal cocked his head over his shoulder to look back at it. She sent it back around and at the thrower, just as the bellboy murderfreak ducked into another doorway. She claimed this one as her own. "Yeah sure, whatever,” he said, the eye-rolling evident in his tone. He left this moron to her and followed after the bellhop, who slammed the door in a very weak attempt to bar his way.

The God Slayer was having none of that. His foot came up swiftly and he kicked the door in – literally off of its hinges and practically splintering it into segments. The murdered stumbled back, looking at the wooden fragments in his hands in awe. "Pal, I’m really not in the mood so if you could just-…” was all Mythal managed to get out before the man pulled out his knife and dove at him. The God Slayer, now even more annoyed, ducked the slash at his face and bent around the man, slamming his elbow into the back of his head. The murdered stumbled but spun around, blade coming around from the side in a wild swipe. The God Slayer ducked again and this time as he came back up, he swung his fist forward in the form of a heavy haymaker. It slammed into the bellhop’s cheek, jerking his body one way and his head the other. As he stood there, stunned, Mythal pushed off the ground and slammed his extended arm out into his opponent’s stomach before continuing forward. The clothesline carried them all the way to the wall, where Mythal unceremoniously buried the murderer in a crater against the brick barrier. A loud, squeaky noise escaped the man’s mouth, a high-pitched squeal of pain and agony.
