    Username: Naziel
Suggestion Idea Name: The Grand Magic Tournament
Suggestion Details: Well after watching the Grand Magic Tournament Arc so far i thought to myself "Why couldnt we do that?" Admitidely it would make it harder due to to numbers in guilds but a 5 man team, dark guild could be permitted to attend permitting they are monitored and dont do a flare corona... But i believe it would work well perhaps us the dice system to determine the winner then base the thread from that roll? Or another method of deciding it? but i think it would boost thread activity on the site and stop people idling in the chat box as well as give a much needed morale boost for the site and some Rp'ers that have been feeling low of later :)

Other Information: i think i've said all i can :)

Post by Nero_ 26th April 2014, 1:01 pm

I have been thinking about that a few days ago, and I believe it would be cool to have the Grand Magic Games on the forum.

    Alas.

It would be a chaos. Sincerely. How can you be sure that all five members of the team will be active always?

Besides, there we have the problem with Tartarus. They are inactive, but are considered still a guild, so they'd have to be included.

Then, some of the guilds have very little members. Sabertooth has little members, for example. GM cannot participate, and if Sabertooth is left with not enough active Guildmembers to participate... Well. You get it.

Timezone difference: Many members have a big problem with timezone difference. Me and Indar, to give an example, live in Spain and Estonia, respectively. When most of the American users are on, we are off. We'll have serious problems in posting, and the games will take on too much time.

Busy members: Many members don't have infinite free time. What will happen if one of the members of a team suddenly goes inactive for a pair of days, or a week, month? This will stop the whole games, this will screw up pretty much everyone.

Well, I believe I've exposed enough.

So why not 1 on 1 divided in categories based on each rank? One representative from each guild per rank duking it out to see who wins? Because 1 versus 1 is easier to manage than teams and by having representatives we control how much of each guild comes into play.

Spectators can have their own thread where they can chaotically post and root for their guild, no turn order is needed in this case. Cleans up the clutter.

Well....when we tried before was teams.

Don't downplay how much harder it is to manage two people at a time than just one person.

A 1 v. 1 Tournament will work. It's much easier. Anyway, since people were bringing up the old 2 v. 2 tournament I thought I'd just chime in, and remind everyone that 1 v. 1 is a hell of a lot easier and faster. Cause it was definitely mad work to manage 2 combatants on one side and 2 on another.

If we have teams of 5 and do 1 v 1 events like the Grand Magic Games and let the teams choose who competes in each event then the risk of someone going inactive goes down. If one person just stops being active then they just don't have to be used.

Combat should be managed just by a combat judge like last time.

However I doubt I would participate in this ever. Too many egos clashing. It would take way too much time. Time bombing waiting to go off.

Even though i'm quite new here to this rp, I think this would be quite a good idea as it would get many people involved. Also, if this tournament does go ahead and get used then I was just thinking that maybe the people who aren't actually taking part in it themselves as participants, might be able to have votes to decide on who battles against who (or at least which guilds battle each other if the actual guilds still get to decide on the member that participates). I was thinking that every guild member that participate should also get a reward like jewels but not too much as that would be unfair on the people that don't participate.

As said previously, I also believe that 1v1 battles would probably be the best option as then there won't be much worry about someone being inactive or just being away as then someone can switch in. If this tournament idea takes place and there are multiples rounds in it, I think that in between rounds, guild also get the choice of switching participants with members who aren't currently taking part in it.

Maybe if a member wins a battle, they get a certain amount of experience depending on how much HP they had at the end of it and the difference in ranks and also what type of magic they used compared to the opponent (such as slayers might have advantage against normal mages and also if there was any type of advantage or disadvantages with the magic match-up such as Water vs Fire or Thunder vs Metal).

Tournaments tend to fail. Even tournaments which are 1 vs 1. Plus some of the guilds have more high level members than others so they'd have a major advantage. For example, Blue Pegasus have I believe two or three H rank members plus at least two S ranks on top of that. I cannot think of another guild with more than one H rank.

I suppose you could put rank limitations down. So in order to complete a team must have x number of mages of x rank and matches are set up so they will always face members of equal rank.

Still, it would be difficult. However, if we set up guidelines e.g. if a member doesn't post for 48 hours then the other person wins. Then it could work.

However, as we are having teams I would say each guild gets to enter the tournament in three places. Thus if one member becomes inactive then the guild isn't automatically out of the tournament.

Post by Grizzly 28th April 2014, 11:50 am

Not supporting this. Sorry, but I've seen site-wide tournaments fail. A lot. The only tournaments that have worked smoothly without any sort of failure were those that functioned on the smallest possible denominator. I can pretty much guarantee that something like reaching the finals between 10+ contestants will not happen. It just can't. Especially on a site like this.

What I can suggest is reducing the amount of people participating to the smallest possible number to make this a guaranteed success. Because honestly, failing site-wide events is the worst thing that can happen to a site's atmosphere and story.

Next thing. There HAS to be a designated person to follow the fights, read them and step in, in case something unruly and/or unfair should happen. Now, some people may think that it's stupid to let one person's opinion rule over a whole tournament. But it's the only method that really works. If someone with experience does the job, there should be no problem. It's simply that people often don't want to realize the fact that they may have just got themselves in an inescapable situation or their opponent's skills in the given circumstances encompass their character's traits and strengths. This is often the case, and in fights the Gary Stu's and Mary Sue's come out like nowhere else.

Last thing that has to be done in my opinion. I understand that a thing like the Grand Magic Games would be set out for some of the newer members to step in and make themselves known to the rest of the rp community. While some people who have joined as new members have experience, others do not. Those that generally don't have experience and/or are just not that good at rp combat and similar things should have the courtesy to not attempt anything great. If a tournament should be set out, then it should have a certain standard concerning skill and quality. 2 paragraphs with 3 lines each often don't cut it in fighting topics and the process of a fight, something in which two characters would actually put utmost precision and accuracy into, gets disrupted.

I mean no offense to any certain kind of players or the newer members that are simultaneously new to rping. I am simply of the opinion that IF this would be an idea, there are certain requirements that have to be met otherwise my instinct tells me that such a site-wide tournament will fail. Battle Moderator(s), skilled rp'ers and good content are what you want. I have brought forth my arguments in several discussions about rp combat and site-wide tournaments and I have gotten a "I'm taking it too serious. It's supposed to be fun. Not something stressing or work.". Yes, it's supposed to be fun. But it's also supposed to be fun to read. And if it is not, then people will lose interest in the tournament, the members participating will lose motivation because no one follows up to care and the tournament will fail. (this is how the last 2 tournaments I've seen failed)

Righto, that's it. I would like to hear the opinion of others on this topic and perhaps on my words.

PS: To clarify once more. I'm not saying it's a stupid idea, I'm simply saying requirements have to be met or failure is probable (from my experience).
