Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
To call the incident that had befallen Joya a tragedy almost didn’t seem to be enough to truly convey the horrific reality of what had taken place. Countless millions of lives were snuffed out in a matter of seconds, putting an immediate stop to any chance that the world would have to broker peace between the two nations of Ishgar that held arguably the most ancient blood feud with one another. And the worst part was that they had very few answers and likely wouldn’t have them any time soon, as Joya had demanded that all foreign individuals, whether political dignitaries or otherwise, evict themselves from the nation within twenty four hours of the explosion that had completely flattened their only city. This meant that Serilda and the rest of the Rune Knights had been given next to no time to try to perform an investigation before they were told to vacate or be treated with hostility.

Serilda had vehemently implored the High Priestess of Joya to reconsider as far as the Rune Knights were concerned. After all, many of the Rune Knights that had been assisting with patrols had also died that day, and a number of reports from those who had survived confirmed that not just the Knights but also a great number of civilians had stopped multiple other terrorist attempts and bomb threats. Reason only dictated that the Knights had nothing to gain from the attack, and Serilda could not help them pursue justice if they were not allowed to assist with the investigation. Unfortunately, the priestess was having none of it, and the Chieftain would not accept anything except for all peoples of non Joyan descent to leave.

So she had been forced to return home to Fiore, where she had been tasked with giving the official national address regarding the event, letting the rest of the country – and the rest of the world – know what had transpired, including announcing the unfortunate deaths of Bellum’s cardinal Leonida and the head chairman of the Magic Council Pendleton. The latter was a death was hitting both Serilda and Mythal particularly hard. They had served directly under Norwood for nearly four years, and he was a good man. The couple had their opinions and whispered suspicions about many of the other council members, but Norwood was a man whom they both greatly respected. With him gone, it left a gaping hole in the leadership for the Council, one that the two Gods of Ishgar were not at all looking forward to see how it was filled.

And while Serilda’s speech had been as collected and respectful as one would expect from a noblewoman that held a number of political positions of high esteem, this was the one time that Serilda had refused to hold back her opinion and thoughts in the privacy of the Council’s meeting room. While she had more or less kept her composure, she had not shied away from demanding to know who had authorized and vetted the escort parties that had been chosen for the Bellum and Pergrande dignitaries, a task that Serilda had asked to handle herself but had been denied by the Council. That alone had been odd enough, but the rumor that not just one but two dark mages had been selected for one of the envoys had her utterly furious, and she had not held back from expressing her disappointment and frustration from how poorly handled everything had been.

But that was a story for another day.

Today, Serilda had decided it was time for her to meet personally with the other hired mages to interview them directly over the attack. There were less of them available than she would have liked. Four individuals had been chosen for each envoy, and all four of the ones that had been with the Pergrande dignitary had disappeared. It was news that Serilda was not taking well, considering that one of those mages had been Kenna, from Serilda’s former guild Sabertooth. She had not spoken to Kenna in quite some time, but she did care greatly for the woman and it was difficult not knowing whether the guildmaster had survived the attack or not. Of the four that had been chosen to escort Norwood and Leonida, only three were present and accounted for. The one known as Maven had been gravely wounded and was undergoing medical treatment, while another known as Kyran had fled the scene and gone missing shortly after the dust had settled. The other two were members of Mercury’s guild Silver Wolf, one of which Serilda knew personally, even if they were still little more than acquaintances.

Still, that had seemed the best place to start. So Serilda had sent a summons to the Wizard Saint Leona, requesting that she meet with Serilda at her office in the Rune Knights headquarters in Era. It was in the large room where Serilda sat behind a small mountain of reports as she waited for the guildmaster’s arrival, rubbing her temples and doing her best to fight off a migraine as she poured through as much information as her brain was capable of processing.

-Era, the Rune Knights Command Post-

Wearing her green, gold, and white outfit with black bike shorts on underneath the skirt and Argent Gloves on her hands, Leona had come to Era to answer the summons sent to her by Serilda Sinclair, the Field Marshal of the Rune Knights and the Goddess of Conviction. The structure's exterior was rather imposing even to the Wizard Saint of Courage. She had traveled to Era once before during the Winter Wonderhell incident a couple of years ago, but this was the first time she had ever been inside the Rune Knights Command Post. She also hoped that it would be the last time she had to go inside the Rune Knights Command Post for any reason, let alone official business.

Leona was at Silver Wolf Guild Hall trying her best to plow through a large pile of guild paperwork when a guild staff member brought Leona the summons from Serilda. Reading the document made Leona feel more than a little apprehension, but she had little choice but to go to Era. Failure to do so would likely have dire consequences for Silver Wolf and Leona did not want the guild she led to suffer for her failure to answer the summons.

Before she left Silver Wolf Guild Hall to go to Era Leona had made absolutely certain that she was not carrying any weapons. She had even taken the knife out of her right boot so that she did not accidentally carry it in to the meeting with Serilda. Leona had even left her backpack at the guild hall, so the only items on her person were her Argent Gloves and the summons from Serilda. Both the lack of weapons and the lack of any place to easily conceal them should be proof enough that Leona had come to Era to speak with Serilda in good faith.

    -Inside the Field Marshal's Office-

Shortly after arrival in the Rune Knights Command Post Leona had been given detailed instructions on how to get to the Field Marshal's office. By following those detailed instructions to the letter Leona had reached the Field Marshal's office without incident. Now the Wizard Saint of Courage stood before the Field Marshal of the Rune Knights and the Goddess of Conviction, who was seated at her desk with a look of concentration etched onto her face.

Leona had not seen Serilda in person since Nessa Cordelia Lux's birthday party in Magnolia Town a couple of years ago. However, the white-haired mage had not called Leona here to have a friendly chat about old times. There was likely some serious business that they needed to discuss. Leona took a quiet breath and set about trying to come up with the right words with which to greet Serilda. Once she was as ready as she was ever going to be Leona looked towards the famous white-haired mage and spoke.

"Hello Field Marshal. I'm here to answer the summons." Leona stated calmly and simply, holding up the paper that had been sent to her as proof of her claim. Leona did not dare call the Field Marshal "Serilda" because she did not know the latter well enough to begin to think she could get away with that. It was best to use titles unless given permission to do otherwise.

As she waited for a reply from the busy Field Marshal Leona went over a short mental checklist she had made while walking to the Field Marshal's office.

Serilda was not familiar with her and she was not Leona's friend.

Serilda was not Samira and would not tolerate any displays of stupidity from Leona.

When Serilda spoke to her Leona was to get to the point right away without hesitation or fumbling for words.

If Leona kept those three points in mind she might stand a chance of getting through this meeting intact.

It calls us back to who we truly are.
Serilda was able to sense that someone was outside her office, but her concentration was such that she didn’t really stop to think about it. People came and went down the hall all day, and while her Void Sense ability allowed her to “see” the shape of everything and everyone surrounding her, down to a molecular level if need be, that wasn’t always enough to identify a specific person outside the door. As such, she wasn’t aware that it was one of her invited guests until after the Leona stepped into the room, causing Serilda to finally pull her gaze away from the documents before her and up toward the other woman as she was greeting her. “Master Jarnefeldt..!”

With a small, if tired, smile the field marshal closed the report before her and set it on top of the pile of other such reports before standing and coming around the desk to greet the woman more personably. “It’s so good to see you again,” Serilda said, offering the wizard saint a familiar handshake. “Please, just call me Serilda. No need for formalities. Thank you for coming. I’m sure you’ve got a lot on your plate, so I truly appreciate your making time to see me. Please, make yourself comfortable anywhere you like.”

Gesturing gently with her hand, Serilda indicated toward the side of the large office where there was a sizable sofa and two upholstered arm chairs around either side of a wooden coffee table. The area was up against a full length mirror that ran the span of nearly the entire wall, allowing plenty of natural light to come in, with a full view of the Rune Knight training grounds below where many recruits were currently being put through the ropes. It was a comfortable seating arrangement that was much more casual than her desk, and Serilda did not wish to make Leona feel like a schoolgirl sitting before a principal. The rest of the office itself was neat and tidy, with several shelves of books related to military and political apologetics, as well as various history texts for Fiore and many other nations. On the wall behind the desk was a large tapestry that featured the twisting dragon emblem of the Sinclair noble house in rich gold threading against a deep purple background. On the far side of the room there was a door that presumably led to a personal bathroom, and there were a few framed photographs around the room of Serilda’s family and friends that gave a more personal touch to the otherwise totalitarian feel of the room, including a large family portrait of Serilda with Mythal, their adopted daughters Grappa and Jellisha, and the twin girls Alexis and Naomi that Serilda had given birth to only a few months ago.

Also in the room was her companion wolf Xiuhcoatl, who was sitting upon a large padded mat and eying Leona with curiosity and excitement. The last time Leona would have seen Xiuh she would have been a small pup barely a year old. Now, the canine was fully grown and just as large as any other full blooded wolf, her thick black coat dusted with the sprinkling of lighter cream markings that had earned her species the appropriate name of Star Wolves. And while the creature was highly disciplined and well trained, staying put in her spot, there was no mistaking the still puppy-like gaze in her eyes as she very much wanted to go greet Leona herself, almost as though she could sense the wizard saint’s connection to wolves. It wouldn’t be the first time; Xiuh had been just as eager to meet Mercury when the Silver Wolf ace had first met Serilda a couple years back.

As Leona presumably got herself situated, Serilda stepped briefly back to her desk to gather up the reports that were out and tuck them away in a locked drawer in her desk. “Can I get you something to drink?” she offered. “I have coffee, tea, juice, water… or a small selection of alcohol if you’re so inclined. I believe I have some wine, whiskey… a few beers that Mercury snuck in once when she thought I wasn’t paying attention.” Serilda smirked with amusement and crossed over to the small drink station that was next to the couch, which had a few clean glasses, shelving with bottles of various kinds, and a small miniature fridge. She would fix a glass of whatever Leona expressed an interest in – if anything at all – and then make herself a cup of hot tea. After giving Leona her drink, Serilda would sit across from her.

“I really cannot stress how grateful I am that you came. I’m sure you know why I asked to see you, but in the interest of full transparency I was hoping to get some information from you regarding your experience in Joya. The Council informed me that you were one of the four people chosen to be a part of the protective squad that was with Cardinal Leonida and Chairman Pendleton. As I’m sure you’ve seen on the news, Joya has been difficult to work with since the attack. Understandably so, of course…” Her shoulders drooped a little, and all at once the true weariness of the last several days was evident on her face and in her body language. While she put on a strong face in public and had been exceptionally composed in her recent speech to the nation, the fact remained that Serilda was exhausted and behind closed doors around trusted company she wasn’t as dedicated to hiding behind her usual stoic facade.

She sighed softly. “I don’t know how much you’ve been keeping up with the news, but I have made several attempts to beseech Joya’s remaining representatives to allow me access to ground zero to run an investigation, but my requests have been staunchly denied. I was hoping to interview you and the others that were part of the protective details to see what you can tell me about what happened. Please know, and I cannot emphasize this enough, you are not in any sort of trouble and I’m not here to investigate you as a suspect. The fact is simply that I need answers, and since I can’t get access to Joya right now my only other place to start to gather some leads is with you and the others that were with you when everything went down.”

Blowing off some of the steam from her cup, she took a small sip of the tea before setting it down and picking up a small device that was on the coffee table. “I’m going to record your testimony, if you don’t mind. Everything we discuss today will remain confidential and will not be released to the public, nor to anyone that is not cleared by me or Mythal personally to help with this investigation. Recording this will simply allow me to give you my undivided attention without being distracted by note taking, as well as still be able to recall everything accurately after we are done.” Presuming that Leona had no objections, Serilda would press the button on the device that activated the recording mechanism. Stating the day’s date and time first, as well as both her own name and Leona’s for the record, she asked, “Can you please recount for me, in your own words, what happened the morning of the peace talks in Joya? Feel free to start from the beginning and walk me through the day as it unfolded.”

Terrorist Investigations - Part One Empty Re: Terrorist Investigations - Part One

Post by Leona Jarnefeldt 22nd March 2022, 11:52 pm

Leona calmly awaited the Field Marshal's response without complaint or fidgeting. She was going to do her best to act like a mature mage. This was the Field Marshal's turf and Leona was the former's guest... if "guest" was the right word for it.

Eventually the white-haired mage looked away from what looked like paperwork and spotted the blonde. Leona was not sure what was going to happen next. She silently braced herself for whatever the Field Marshal was going to say to her.

To Leona's surprise the first words out of the Field Marshal's mouth were a cordial greeting. In fact it was so cordial that the blonde was visibly surprised. The blonde's surprise only increased when the Field Marshal rose from her desk and began making her way towards her. Leona was not sure what to think of what was going on here.

They had only met once before.

Why was the Field Marshal being so amiable towards her?

Leona shoved her paranoid thoughts aside and kept her mouth shut as she walked over to the white-haired mage, accepted the handshake and shook hands carefully, then listened to the Field Marshal speak. The white-haired mage spoke calmly and granted the blonde permission to call the former by her name. She also gave Leona permission to sit somewhere so that she did not have to stand during the entire conversation. The blonde was disarmed by Serilda's hospitality and was not sure how to respond since things were playing out a lot differently than they had in her mind.

Leona looked towards the area indicated to her by Serilda and noticed the luxurious seating arrangements and other equally luxurious decorations. The blonde looked around and soon noticed that the entire office was decorated in a way that surprised the Wizard Saint of Courage. Leona's office back at Silver Wolf Guild Hall was austere and Leona had expected the Field Marshal of the Rune Knights to work out of a similarly spartan office, but that was the blonde's naivety influencing her thinking. Leona also spotted a well-groomed black wolf seated close by and regarding her with keen interest.

Leona briefly made eye contact with the creature and then turned to Serilda, who was generously offering her a choice of several beverages. That selection included a few varieties of alcohol. The blonde did not have to think very hard about which beverage she was going to select.

"I'd like coffee, please. I don't have any special preference as to how strong it is." Leona calmly replied as she walked slowly over to where Serilda was standing, making eye contact with her hostess and using a calm and polite voice. Although the blonde had made plenty of stupid mistakes in the past, even she knew better than to drink alcohol in this situation. Leona almost never drank because her village had required everyone to be sober in case of bandit or slaver attack and she had kept that attitude long after leaving home. Leona had only consumed alcohol twice since leaving home; the first occasion was when she had visited West Fiore Trading Company mage Sol Delthousin at his home and the second occasion was when she drank a custom-made "Cerulean Chaser" during the Urban Nights event in Rose Garden.

Aside from force of habit, Leona also had another good reason to refrain from drinking in Serilda's presence.

The blonde had a sneaking suspicion that Serilda was trying to invoke "in vino veritas" on her by offering alcohol and hoping that she took the bait and drank until she let loose secrets that would otherwise be kept hidden.

Leona kept her misgivings to herself and listened to Serilda talk further. She was eventually rewarded with the reason for which she had been called here. The Field Marshal wanted Leona's perspective on what had happened during the Ishgar Symposium. When she heard that the blonde closed her eyes and took a quiet breath. All the negative feelings and memories were coming back again and she would have to relive them during this conversation.

Leona's inner critic tore into her for acting so immature in front of the Field Marshal and Leona opened her eyes, making eye contact with Serilda again. The Wizard Saint listened quietly and learned that she was not facing criminal charges or being considered a suspect. Those assurances were only mildly comforting to her because she was fairly sure that she would condemn herself with her testimony and both those assurances and the protections they implied would be revoked once the extent of her incompetence was revealed.

Making matters worse was Serilda's admission that Leona's testimony was going to be recorded. That knowledge was more than a little displeasing to her because a record of one of the worst days in her career and life would always exist. However, Leona was going to act maturely about it. Getting angry with Serilda was not going to undo what had happened at the Ishgar Symposium.

"I have no objections, Field Marsh- er, Serilda." Leona said calmly and plainly before the recording device was activated. Now it was time to relive that fateful day and recall all the stupid mistakes she had made. She was going to do her best to give her take on events in a factual manner without emotion, excess verbiage, or irrelevant tangents.

"The morning of the Ishgar Symposium I was standing in a conference room with Kyran Sabin-Dyer, Lehanna Seraph, and Maven. When the Chairman of the Magic Council entered along with the Cardinal of Whispers the two greeted us, told us what the purpose of their presence was, and told us about the large and animated crowds in Felidae City. After that we were asked to tell the Chairman and Cardinal our names and abilities so that everyone knew what everyone else could do and that each member of the detail would be placed where they could use their particular abilities to the best effect." Leona started off.

"Once the introductions and explanations were finished the Chairman answered questions about the use of lethal force and property damage. Lethal force was meant to be a last resort unless it was used against us first. Property damage was to be minimized, but it was allowed in extreme circumstances. Ensuring the Cardinal's safety was expressly stated to be our most important objective." Leona continued to recount her version of events in a factual manner.

"After the rules were laid out for us we were each given special bracelets that served as both maps and communication devices. The Chairman and the Cardinal had one too so that everyone could stay in contact." Leona added. She then closed her eyes. The Wizard Saint did not know it at the time, but that morning had been the best part of that fateful day for her.

At Leona’s request for coffee, Serilda pulled out a ceramic mug and filled it from an enchanted pitcher that kept hot, fresh coffee within. She did the same for her own cup of tea. Picking up both glasses, she would hand the coffee to Leona. The Wizard Saint would find a small tray with packets of creamer and sugar and mixing sticks for the woman to utilize how she desired. From there, Serilda explained the reason that she asked the Silver Wolf guildmaster to come to Era, and requested that Leona provide her testimony of the events in Joya. It was a hard question to ask, there was no doubt about that. She was essentially requesting that Leona relive her trauma, something which Serilda absolutely hated to put on anyone. Unfortunately, it was part of her job. She couldn’t discover the truth without getting details from those who had been there, and given Leona’s status as a Wizard Saint and her affiliation with Mercury, the Silver Wolf ace was the one whose word Serilda was going to trust the most.

Gently sipping from her tea, Serilda listened carefully as Leona began to recount the events of the day. When everything had started that morning, Leona had met up with everyone at the designated conference room in the building where Cardinal Leonidas and Chairman Norwood had been staying, Leona confirming that the others with her had been Kyran Sabin-Dyer, Lehanna Seraph, and a woman only known as “Maven”. The group had been briefed by the chairman and cardinal about the state of the town, specifically about the large crowds and how active the people were with their shows of protest or support. Once the chairman had gathered everyone’s names and gotten a basic idea of their abilities, the small group had been organized and instructed not to use lethal force unless absolutely necessary.

Serilda nodded. That did sound exactly like Norwood. He was a good man and did not like to kill anyone, even dark mages and criminals, unless his hand was forced. After all, there was no justice in death most of the time. Despite the regulations Norwood had hoped to keep to, he informed them that the primary objective was to protect Leonidas and ensure his safety. From there, they were all given bracelets to help keep track of one another’s locations, as well as to keep track of the surrounding areas and stay in communication.

It was at this point that Leona closed her eyes, and Serilda sensed that the rest of the story would be the more difficult parts to recount. “Take your time,” the marshal encouraged her kindly. In truth, Serilda could have just as easily received Leona’s testimony by asking for a drop of her blood. The magic she had inherited from Victoria, the apocalyptic Seal of Conquest, allowed her the ability to see a person’s memories by consuming even a tiny bit of the plasma. However, such a suggestion would be wildly invasive, especially since there was no guarantee that she would only see the memories that the person was willing to share with her. Serilda refused to use that particular ability unless she had no other choice, particularly with someone she respected, even if she didn’t know Leona particularly well. So instead, she chose to sit and wait patiently for Leona to gather her thoughts and words enough to continue.

Terrorist Investigations - Part One Empty Re: Terrorist Investigations - Part One

"When we finally set out I was in the lead and my guildmate Lehanna Seraph was at the rear of the group. I don't remember the exact order of group members, but as far as I can remember the Cardinal and the Chairman were somewhere in the middle along with Maven and Kyran." Leona started the next part of the story. The admission that she did not know the exact group order nor the exact locations of group members other than herself and Lehanna was not going to make her look good, but she would have to live with it. A few moments later Leona added another detail.

"I had also brought out a few summons to help. I had brought out my Pharaoh Eagle-Owl and Tempest Avian summons for aerial reconnaissance and my Black-Backed Jackal summon for sniffing out threats on the ground. The two birds flew overhead while the Jackal stayed with me." Leona added a brief part about bringing in summons to help. Next she described the start of the trip.

"We started walking along a path that led through a busy part of Felidae City. As we walked we saw quite a few people moving about. Many of them looked at us, but nothing bad came out of it. They were just onlookers." Leona gave her perspective on the beginning of the trip. Nothing had caused either her airborne summons or the Jackal to notify her of something worth warning the group about. As a result the start of the trip had been totally unremarkable.

"The path we were on was leading us towards the foot of a hill and as we approached the hill we came across a lot of people. However, these people weren't passive observers like those we had met earlier in the city. They were protesters who had organized themselves into two large groups of people who were either pro-treaty or anti-treaty." Leona continued recounting events as precisely as she could.

"We weren't without support, though. I saw quite a few Rune Knights in black uniforms, but there were also Joyans wearing black sashes. These sashes had the emblem of the Rune Knights on the front and these Joyans worked with the Rune Knights to keep a constant patrol going. They worked hard to assist us in getting through the crowds whenever we needed help getting through. We needed that help because both groups of protesters were huge and they were quite vocal about their beliefs... another thing was that they paid very close attention to us. I didn't like that at all, but the Cardinal didn't seem to mind the crowds... until things suddenly took a turn for the worse." Leona reported what happened when the group encountered the protestors. She then paused a few moments. Leona was not going to like talking about the next sequence of events because that sequence was where things started going downhill for her.

"I didn't see or hear what started it, but at some point the two groups began trading some harsh verbal barbs. The Rune Knights and the Joyans with the sashes worked hard to keep the peace, but eventually the two groups of protesters got tired of trading just words. When the shoving started things snowballed and eventually the protesters began crowding around us from every direction." Leona told Serilda what had led up to the mayhem and its effect on the group.

"When the Chairman saw the crowds gathering around us he gave us two orders. The first was to keep the protesters at arm's length. The second was to attempt to clear an escape route away from the mayhem." Leona briefly recounted the Chairman's reaction to what was going on around them. Leona then took a quiet breath.

"I drew my Silver Longsword and gave verbal warnings to try and convince people who were getting too close to back off, but it didn't do much good. I didn't make myself convincing enough, so the crowd didn't take me seriously. Kyran, Maven, and Lehanna were much more convincing and people gave them plenty of space. It took a bit of effort, but we managed to get through the crowd and reach a side path that was marked for us on our wristbands." Leona recounted before taking a brief pause. She had been uncharacteristically meek because she was trying to avoid causing an unpleasant incident by being too aggressive at the wrong time, but her reluctance to be forceful in keeping people away from the group could have had disastrous results had it not been for the good work of Kyran, Maven, and Lehanna.

"When we got to the entrance of the side street that had been marked as our alternate route we paused and I took a count of everyone. Everyone in the group had made it through the crowd... everyone except Lehanna." Leona recounted in an unhappy tone. As she told more and more of the story Leona was keenly aware that she was making herself look incompetent at best and negligent at worst. However, Leona was not going to lie about what had happened.

"The Chairman and the Cardinal discussed what to do for a few moments, but ultimately we had to move on without Lehanna. It was a tough decision that wasn't made lightly, but we had to move on for the sake of the overall goal." Leona told what happened once Lehanna was discovered to be missing. It was at that point that the Wizard Saint had to take a pause. Telling the story would only get more difficult from here.
