    Fire.

There was so much of it. He had never seen so many trees burnt to smithereens, vegetation transformed into hot ribbons of light. He watched as those flames spread over that green bed of life with uncontrollable destruction. It leaped from tree to tree, licked each and every animal, and danced while the forest cried. Agonizing cries. They'd weep if the flames had not scorched their tears, and yet he could hear their desperation and sadness as if their very bodies had been peeled away from their skeletons. In no more than an hour, his home and the sanctuary of thousands of lives became victim to humanity's darkest desires and was transformed into blazing ash and cinders because of it. And yet here he was alone, distraught. Lost and nameless.

How long had it been now? A day? Maybe two? Time seemed meaningless and yet all that mattered as he scaled the Phoenix Mountains, gingerly holding something in both of his cupped hands as he trudged through the dirt and stone, his body weak and cloak hiding his face.

For a long time, he knew that people lived up on this mountain. A lifetime of living in the forest just at the foot of the mountain often invited news from passerbys every now and then, and while he never meddled or bothered with these people, they couldn't have been more crucial and imperative than now. Who else could help him? Who else could save them? The nearest settlement was too far for him to resort to—it'd be too late by then!

Exhausted and thirsty, he continued to trudge up the mountain until he couldn't walk ten steps without stumbling and losing his stride. He could hear the quiet murmurs of the surrounding trees and the chitchat of critters scrambling around. Seeing life continue on this mountain was bitter, knowing that his home and the home of so many others were burning burnt to crisps as he thought of it. This very second, he knew another had just died a wrongful, evil death, and he was to blame for his slowness.

"I have to hurry...!" the mysterious man muttered to himself, holding his cloak together by clenching his hand over his chest, "They're all... if I don't hurry...!"

He was close to falling to his knees right there, almost too tired to carry on. He had barely enough energy to think, let alone speak, and yet the peak of the mountain seemed so far... the air was thin and his heart beat a million times a minute. He could see the black sky above him, and it didn't look all too different from the ash that swept over it just a day or two earlier. He felt like crying—he felt as if he couldn't do this. Finally, his legs gave way. They couldn't carry the weight of his misfortune and heavy heart any longer.

    Thud!

"What if it's too late...? I can't do this alone..." he fell to his knees, staring at the thing in his hands. His voice quivered as if threatening to cry, but he didn't. "I can't do this alone...!" his hands curled around whatever he was caressing, holding it close to his chest like some precious thing. His tears were nigh, and doom seemed to be impending. But, in a strange and mysterious moment, the enigmatic man was suddenly not so alone anymore.

Before him were three silver wolves, staring at him indifferently. Watching him. They didn't move an inch closer, and yet they did not flee. In fact, it was impossible that they even arrived so silently, but in the midst of his despair, the man couldn't question things as he would've in a calm. Noticing his company, he looked up at them, bewildered.

Wolves? he thought to himself, staring at them. Abruptly, his eyes widened when noticing what they really were. Silver wolves?! Wait...! His voice suddenly regained some vigor, and the face hidden beneath the wide hood fixed at the three, looking one in the canine eyes.

"Please! You have to help me! My home... the forest! It's in danger!" he shouted at them with all of his strength, and yet it still didn't amount beyond a loud mumble, his expression filled with desperation. "You have to take me to those people! If you don't, they'll... they'll die! All of them! I'm... begging you!" There was a moment of silence between the four, and yet he never felt his heart and feeling pulsate so loudly. He could hear the voices and the skepticism of the nature around him boom in the distance.

Without a sound, the three wolves began to trot along a side path of the mountain, going up a distance and stopping to wait for him to follow. Whatever feeling he had tried to send, they certainly received, and suddenly he was able to push through his bodily limits and trudge behind them as fast as he could, like a wounded soldier.

Three hours later, after feeling the rock and mud of the mountain bite into his feet and rip into his legs, he could see a hall of sorts. A building. Although as fascinated as was by the construction, he didn't have time to behold the structure as he would've normally liked to. Instead, the silver wolves sitting outside, he pushed through the front doors with all of his strength. Although the doors would normally be light and average, he felt as if pushing the entire world against his shoulders at that moment. He couldn't feel a weight quite as heavy as those doors in his life.

    Swoosh!

The doors swung open, and stumbling through it was him, cloaked and visibly worn. It would be hard to see his face with his hood, and he was breathing heavily after two or more days of constant travel. He could hardly even mutter out words.

"P-Please..." he mumbled, choking out his words with difficulty, "someone help..." he suddenly felt his body become insurmountably heavy, and so full of dread that he could no longer stand in both mind and matter. He felt his consciousness slip away, and even though he could feel his body fall to the floor, the item in his hands were still clutched in his fingers despite his weariness. And like a light being flickered off, he fainted.

    Thud!

    -Leona's Room-

A few days after her adventure in Fulci with PG-13, Leona had been browsing through four open clothing catalogs on her desk to try and find Ruvel's supplier of the miracle fabric that repaired itself in order to commission a self-repairing version of her green, white, and gold outfit. It had taken a beating during the survey of Fulci when she encountered the unpleasant surprise of multiple Balors roaming the town and she wanted a new one, only one that was able to repair itself because paying a Cloth Make mage to repair it was starting to get expensive. The challenge was finding the fabric's maker and contacting them because she had forgotten the name of the maker and did not know their contact information. At least she had had her signature outfit repaired and thus was able to wear it today.

The hefty payday from the Fulci job ensured that Leona was able to repair her outfit and still have plenty of Jewels left over to save for another day. Thinking about the Fulci adventure led Leona to think about PG-13, her faithful droid companion. He made the job a lot easier since not having to fight every last zombie herself left the Wizard Saint with plenty of energy for taking on the Balors, which were tough customers due to their speed, ability to call in reinforcements, and strength. While individually the Balors were not too tough for Leona now that she was as strong as she was, they compensated for the disparity in power by simply swamping her with ordinary zombies before joining the fray or by trying ambush her from unexpected locations like hiding inside abandoned cars, trash cans, or in one case in Fulci Cemetery, a half-closed coffin lying out in the open.

Leona had to set that chore aside because she felt a magic signature enter the building, which meant a possible new recruit. She stood up, put Ses Revanche in her right boot, and left her room to go to the guild hall foyer and meet the visitor. PG-13 was right on her heels.

    -Inside the guild foyer-

Leona entered the foyer to find someone lying on the floor. PG-13 followed close behind and stood watch as the Wizard Saint walked over to their side and gently rolled them over. She checked for a pulse and found that they were not dead. They were still alive, only cold, hungry, and most likely tired from the trip to get here.

At that moment four guild staff members came in to find Leona and PG-13 tending to the youth. Leona turned her head and spoke to them.

"This person needs medical help. They're not dead yet, but without help they might not make it." Leona said to them. Thus began a chain of events which led to the youth being given immediate medical care with Leona and PG-13 standing by. There was a good chance that the youth would be revived and back on his feet in a matter of minutes, if not hours.

Today was not such a productive day for the masked librarian. The escort from Cedar all the way to the guild with the old man was a challenge, and his legs were still a bit sore from the troubles along the way. On his desk were worn out tomes with magic circles presented in the pages visible. Yuvon had been collecting magic circles over the time he spent as a wizard in Silver Wolf, since they helped him focus his spells a little more than when he cast them without magic circles. Many people were used to casting spells without these manifestations, but what was wrong with being a little traditional, eh?

Well, time for some fresh air! He needed to refresh himself and get something to drink, so he could continue on his little research. That was why he walked out of his room and down the stairs towards the guild foyer, but beyond his predictions, many of the guild staff team were present at the entrance along with the Guild Mistress herself. “Huh? M-Mistress, what’s the commotio-… w-wait, is he going to be alright?!” Yuvon’s eyes - or rather, the holes in his mask to look out from - widened in fright, for there was an unconscious man laying in the guild foyer and treated by the staff team. They appeared to have things under control, but the librarian still approached them with the intention of helping in any way he could. This was a serious matter, and they had to make sure that this stranger was going to be fine.

“I can be of assistance, surely…!”

    "This person needs medical help."

I'm so tired... I don't want to get up... not ever...

"Huh? M-Mistress, what’s the commotio—W-wait, is he going to be alright?!"

It is all so noisy... I can't... sleep like this...

"They're not dead yet, but without help they might not make it."

There's something I need to do... what was it? What was this important thing I needed to do...?

"I can be of assistance, surely…!"

I can't think. What was it? It was something dear to me... something...

"—The Forest!" he shouted, gasping as he suddenly awoke from his fainting spell, eyes wide and a look of urgency on his hooded face. "I was on my way up the Phoenix Mountain, looking for those people... and then... and then..." he mumbled to himself, and then looking around to see that he was not where he thought he was.

When he collected himself, he realized that he was in the building owned by those people. A crowd of people swarmed over him, their hands hovering over him with healing magics and mumbling medical jargon to one another as if he were some patient. There was a weird masked man or woman there among them, and a woman of petite stature who carried an air of leadership around her. Was this it? Silver Wolf? He had been aware of their existence ever since they even came upon the Phoenix Mountains, but he had never exchanged a word or look their way. For them, they wouldn't have ever known he had existed until now either.

At first, he hesitated. In all of his twenty-two years, he had seldom spoken to another soul before, save for the forest and its spirits itself. He almost choked on his words from the sheer anxiety of even being among them, but after recalling the horrific image of his home being burnt to nothing, he stammered through his fears with little difficulty. His emerald eyes were sobbing quietly, and his voice was shaking. Suddenly, he wobbled to his feet and reached out to the petite woman he had fixed eyes with just moments before.

"Y—You're Silver Wolf, right? You are those people?" he stuttered, inching closer to her with his hand reached out, "My home... t-the forest... it's being burned down! You've got to help me! Without your help, they'll... they'll all die! Their hearts will be turned to ash! Please! I'm begging you!" he cried, finally approaching the woman and pleadingly holding her wrist, "I'm not strong enough to do it alone... please...! I'll g-give you anything you want...! Please, save them...!"

For the most part, he had no choice but to ignore how heavy his legs felt. They reminded him of lead. The scratches and scrapes were nearly healed from the medics' brief efforts, but not entirely, and his hood still veiled part of his face. But, from up close, the petite woman would have been able to see the helplessness in his wet eyes. His heavy heart taken form in his gaze.

The rising commotion disturbed the ancient warrior's meditation. There were times that the guild hall would become rowdy, but this was something different entirely. A panic was arising, and Mathis believed he had heard the guild master call out that whoever had just entered need medical help. "Poppi. Seems as though the schedule shall be disrupted. We shall go and investigate."

Poppi nodded, ensuring that she had bandages with her and a first-aid protocol loaded as Mathis made his way from his quaint quarters to the foyer down below where, just as he had thought, Leona was there alongside a stranger and a familiar face. Yuvon, was his name. Mathis had not himself met the fellow masked individual outside of a few brusque interactions in the dining hall, but, while Yuvon kept his mask on, Mathis did not feel the need to bear his mask, letting the crystal on his head resonate a faint crimson light onto the snow white hair. Mathis listened in for a short time longer, listening to the man's explanation on why he seemed so panicked. Such events that he was speaking of, hearts turning to ash, was not necessarily an unfamiliar phenomenon to Mathis. His travels had led to many a strange encounter, and such a thing had happened before, though he had an inkling of doubt that this would fall as such.

"Your distress is understandable, but for the sake of your health, I must request that you calm yourself," Mathis said, descending the steps into the foyer proper, Poppi quietly behind in tow. "Your people I am certain will not appreciate one such as brave as yourself to be injured. We will be glad to provide assistance, should Jarnefeldt-sama approve." He gave a gentle smile to the distraught man, kneeling down beside him. "Please, sir, we would ask for more information if you would be able to provide. There is little matter if it is difficult to talk about, however. All I ask is that you remain as calm as you possibly can." He nodded to Poppi. "If it is alright with you, sir, and you, Jarnefeldt-sama, I would send Poppi out to investigate the matter before all else. While she would be unable to fully solve all, she should at least be able to allay the situation somewhat." He bowed as he asked the question before returning to the wounded man on the floor. "Apologies for me pressing you, sir, but I would ask more information. Please, attempt to remain as calm as possible. I am certain that all of us would be more than willing to assist save your forest."

He smiled, taking the bandages from Poppi and doing his best to apply them. He was not the best at healing, but he tried his best to do what he could, trying his very hardest to keep the man as healthy as possible, but it was certainly no easy task. He was heavily wounded, and perhaps more importantly, his weariness held him down. Mathis could do little to assist, but he did his best by providing a friendly face, smiling at the man in an attempt to lessen his despair.

    Maybe he was nervous.

Maybe he was just looking for someone to talk to, or maybe he was just trying to find a place to settle in his roots on this whole thing. But Tsubasa had been spending a lot of his time in the kitchen in the cafeteria. Cooking calmed him, and it was something he understood very well. Cooking was about challenges, testing, trying, and didn’t require a lot of reading, so it checked pretty much all of his buttons.

Of course, the end result was always food, which was a particular bonus that most other hobbies didn’t have. Unfortunately, the downside of cooking was that it was pretty much a singular activity, leading his compatriot Ahab, the little green flying squirrel, to occasionally get bored and just straight up leave. He never went far, but he would definitely fly around and get a scenic view of things. Or rather, find a high place to take a nap until Tsubasa came looking for him. Both were equally feasible.

Thus he had found a small alcove hidden up in the rafters of the lobby, a perfect squirrel-shaped chamber where he could relax and nap. Before he fell into slumber, his last thoughts were that he could probably bring a little pillow up here. Unfortunately it was only a few minutes before his peaceful nap was torn from him, leaving him in a strangely languid state as the foyer became crowded and busy within just a few seconds. It was that strange kind of half-awake sensation where one is not sure what day it is, time it is or which life they’re currently living. As he rubbed his little head, the sounds of someone begging for help knocked him out of his stupor.

He watched from his little perch as a small group gathered around and, being unable to help, did the next best thing. He jumped from his spot, spread his wings and flew around towards the cafeteria, zooming through the air at a surprising speed. His forward momentum was enough to cause him to crash through one of the swinging kitchen doors, curling into a roll and landing in a clump on one of the freezers. “Tsu, there’s a thing in the foyer! Someone’s hurt and I think a forest is on fire?

Tsubasa shook himself from the shock of his friend slamming the door open and nodded with purpose, dusting his hands clean and heading through to the cafeteria. As he did, he opened his hood which allowed Ahab to fall into the comfort of the protective placement. Running through the cafeteria, much to the surprise of the patrons, guildies and general customers, Tsubasa made his way to the group, shaking his hands rapidly as a small glow of water covered his palms, “Lemme help, I can do… something!” He said, sliding in on his knees like a hurried baseball player.

He pressed his hands against the clearly injured guy’s legs, sending a wave of healing energy and baking flour across him, “Let us know where the trouble is, big guy. We’ll head there post pronto.” Giving a hand to someone, even amidst a group of other people who were willing to do the same, was definitely something Tsubasa could do. Here he felt comfortable. Here he could help.

Before he knew it, the crowd of people only seemed to increase. It was daunting, to say the least, but nothing he couldn't brave through considering his dire situation. He couldn't let his anxiety best him now of all times. Among those people were two men who were quick to tend to his wounds. One was tall and tough-looking, spoke politely and had hair like silver. The other one seemed much younger and had hair and eyes that reminded him of the chestnuts from his forest. Not only that, everyone seemed to eager to help, and somehow that made him feel like crying even more.

"Right, s—sorry..." he sniffled through his sobs, looking at the silver-haired man and then looking away. That man was right—he had to calm down, or else he'd look like a bumbling beast to them, and the last thing he wanted was to waste any more time than he had already. "The forest at the foot of this mountain is being burned down! These people have been trying for weeks to get in, but when they couldn't, they... they..." he stammered again, thinking about how the hot ribbons of fire bounced from treetop to treetop, and how all he could do was watch, powerless against such a dangerous force. He felt the tears roll down his face and his hands clench into trembling fists. "I—I'm sorry... I can't calm down... not now... not with everyone suffering like this!"

After that, he seemed to sob even more, albeit far more quietly and stifled than before. Out of habit, he snatched the front of his hood and pulled it down over his face so no one could see the wetness of his emerald eyes.

"Please, we must go now... or else it'll be too late!"

Leona and PG-13 stood off to the side while the medics did their work, but moments later the area got crowded and the young man revived to tell them about a forest burning. He pleaded with them to go to the rescue before it was too late, but Leona did not have any idea what he was talking about... unless he was talking about a forest somewhere in the immediate area. She was pretty sure the spirit wolves or guild staff would let her know if there was any trouble that needed to be dealt with, but Leona had been busy browsing clothing catalogs in her personal room instead of being in the Guild Master's office, so if anything had been going on she was not sure that staff would know where to find her. She was about to ask the revived youth where he was talking about when the area got crowded by Silver Wolf mages.

First Yuvon Mu-Myu made an appearance, then Mathis Lora, then a new fellow with a squirrel pet on his shoulder she had not yet made the acquaintance of. She would have to get to know the last mage later, but right now the youth had her complete attention. He kept talking about "the forest" and "everyone being in danger" and was not sure what he was getting at, but he was insistent that something bad was happening. She and the others needed more information before they acted.

"What forest are you talking about? The forest on the Phoenix Mountains? The forest at the foot of the Phoenix Mountains?" Leona calmly asked the revived youth, who was crying and barely keeping it together. She then turned her head to look at the assembled Silver Wolf mages and gave them some instructions.

" Yuvon, Mathis, and you... as soon as we learn where exactly this fellow's talking about, I want all three of you to go and do what you can to help the people. Don't wait for me. I'll get there as soon as I can!" Leona instructed the two familiar faces and the guy with the squirrel perched on his shoulder, giving them all permission to act without her being there. She was not sure if she should go fight fires because Wind magic tended to spread fires, not put them out. Still, no one said that she had to use magic in order to help out. She could help by rescuing people from burning buildings, quickly digging a firebreak with the aid of her special adrenaline rush, or in any number of ways.

The Forest… that was the first thing that Yuvon heard from this strange man. Listening closer to the words that he spoke with worry and anxiety in his breath, the masked librarian got an idea of what was the problem that had brought him up the precipice of this mountain to their guild hall; the forest was being burned down according to his words. A terrifying fate to woods and bushes that had to be stopped this instance…!

Mathis, the fellow masquerader along Yuvon in this guild, joined the group and immediately aided the stranger in his recovery. His companion, Poppi, too was here to help, and he watched them patch up the stranger clad in a cloak with such selflessness that it shot through his heart and mind. With the progress like this, in terms of his recovery, then the poor gentleman would be up on his knees in no time, truly.

With Leona’s gaze upon him, the hooded Silver Wolf Mage on the stranger’s knees begging to know about this place as well as Mathis too, Yuvon straightened up and awaited her command. As soon as the exact location was found, they were to go and help as expected of wizards of Silver Wolf… it was absolutely necessary.

“Roger that, Mistress,” he replied sharply. He would lift both hands and stretch out his index and middle fingers, then fold his hands together. Blue waves emitted from his hands, and he grabbed the left shoulder of Tsubasa first to leave a seal on it, then Mathis’ right shoulder to leave a mark there too. These marks would emit coolness and a feeling of moisture to their bodies and clothes, and it would help them stay safe from the flames in the worst scenarios. “These will protect you from the licking flames,” he informed them both, “And I can aid with water magic to- wait… I-I BARELY EVEN KNOW WHAT KINDS OF MAGIC YOU TWO POSSESS- WAIT, HAVE I MET YOU BEFORE? OH, NEVERMIND, AS FAR AS I KNOW, I’M READY TO GO!” The eyes on his mask widened up as he quickly threw that tantrum before gaining his composure again. Tsubasa who was sitting lower than him was a first meeting with the masked librarian, but situations like these proved that Yuvon couldn’t perform well under stress.

“L-Let us please know exactly where, young man! The mountain ranges are vast and confusing, and you should know…!”

So the forest was in trouble? "Poppi, begin preliminary reconnaissance. We will gather there shortly." Poppi nodded and rushed out the door. Mathis assumed she would be there within a few minutes, but that did not mean that they had time to delay. "Yuvon-san, if you would not mind leading-" He was interrupted by Yuvon's outburst. "Apologies, Yuvon-san. I believe there are more important matters in the way, but know that I am... less than skilled with magic means. I shall do what I can, but I feel as if someone more experienced within the guild may be best to lead." He turned to face the panicking man. "Fear not. We will do all that is within our power to save your forest." He nodded, preparing to leave. It was only now that he realized there was the sigil on his arm. "Ah, a ward from fires? I appreciate it, Yuvon-san. I suspect you will be a great help for this mission. As for you..." he turned to face the other Silver Wolf mage. "...apologies, I do not know your name. If you are willing, come forth then. I am certain you will be of help as well." He nodded, stepping out the door as he waited for his two fellow guildmates to follow.

Master, Poppi has gotten read of the fire. It seems as if all occupants have been evacuated. No human reading have been detected. Poppi's voice rang in the back of Mathis's mind.

That is a boon, at least. We will focus on finding the remaining inhabitants after the fire has been quelled. What is the situation with the fire.

    Very firey.

Mathis sat in stunned silence. As much as he appreciated Poppi, her actions were...strange at times, to say the least. A fire was firey? Of course it was! What is the spread on the fire?

    Rising rapidly.

Very well. Begin doing what you can to defeat the fire. We will be there in short notice. I may have to summon some other Blades for this.

Master is confident enough to summon Blades in Fiore?

We may have no choice. He nodded, waiting for his reinforcements to be ready to leave.
