    Spoiler:

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

Mythal loved alcohol. Anyone who took any amount of time to know the God Slayer – which was intensely difficult since he was so private – knew that his first and perhaps only love was liquor. It generally was the only reason he ever took any jobs in the first place; he needed some way to fund his binges and his drunken escapades. And since becoming a Fairy Tail wizard, he found himself practically rolling in jewel.

Okay, rolling wasn’t quite the right word but he was getting consistent work and was getting paid; he couldn’t ask for much more than that. After managing to assault the Tower of Rodger and discover the Flying Ring (that was his name for it), he felt he had earned a night off. Sort of. When he had dropped by Fairy Tail to inform them of what had happened in the market, a particular job post had caught his eye. One of the few haunts he had gone to more than once was asking for help with a booze delivery. And for ten thousand jewel, it sounded like the easiest job on the planet!

Unfortunately, upon arriving, he had forgotten the last time he had been there. It had ended… a bit messy. “I don’t care if yer a goddamn Rune Knight; I’m not leaving you alone with booze! I swear to the gods you’re more fish than man,” the bartender said, knocking the job pamphlet out of Mythal’s hand and walking away.

"C’mon Jack, I ain’t gonna steal your alcohol. I’m legit now,” Mythal insisted, squatting to pick up the posting and jabbing his finger into the parchment. "Just lemme help you find your shipment. And get paid. Stressin’ more on that second part.”

The bartender scoffed and shook his head. He glanced over at the bouncer in the corner, who simply shot him a shrug. Finally the man sighed. “Fine. But you aren’t doin’ it alone. I’m hirin’ a second to make sure you don’t make off with a barrel and say it was blasted in the fight.”

Mythal rolled his eyes. "There ain’t gonna be a fight. I’m sure your idiot delivery people are the ones you can’t trust.  But whatever man; do what you gotta’. I’ll just… sit here and wait,” he grumbled, walking over to the closest booth and planting his butt in it, kicking his feet up on the table. So much for being an easy job – now he had to deal with a baby sitter. What kind of asshole was he going to have to deal with for such a simple task?

"Character counts most when duty calls."

Well, Boomslang certainly lived up to its reputation.

Serilda stood at the corner of a street, ignoring the dozens of people staring at her as they walked past. She wasn’t doing anything to draw their attention. The simple fact was that one could tell from a glance that she did not belong in a place like this. Everyone here came because they were looking for an escape from their daily lives.

Serilda had not come here to escape or entertain herself. If anything, she looked like the type of person people would be trying to escape from. She stood straight and at ease with her hands resting at the small of her back. There wasn’t a single wrinkle in her uniformed attire, and she was openly armed with a curved sword sheathed at her hip. Crystal blue eyes panned her surroundings slowly, searching them.

From beside her she heard whispering as people speculated what her purpose here was. She turned to the closest pair, two younger men not long out of their boyhoods, with an even look. “You, there,” Serilda said to them with a voice like cold iron.

The two immediately looked at her with eyes wide in intimidation. “Y-yes ma’am?”

“If you’re going to whisper about me, perhaps you can at least answer me this question: Where can I find this nightclub?” She handed them a piece of paper - the job posting from her guild. The young men were even more reluctant to be near her after realizing she was a wizard, so they quickly pointed her in the right direction. Serilda took the paper back and tucked it away. “You have my thanks. Now get moving while I’m still willing to forget your previous comments.”

She stared them down until they took off. Then, she made her way toward the nightclub in question. It did not take her long to find it. When she stepped inside, Serilda looked around once more. The distaste in her expression was subtle, but not unnoticeable to one examining her closely. The bouncer smartly greeted her.

“I’m looking to speak with Jack regarding a job that was posted at my guildhall.” The large man politely pointed her toward the bar and the man that was working behind the counter.

She nodded to him in thanks and made her way over. Despite the fact that she walked with her head held high, the white haired woman somehow managed to avoid stepping in any spots of filth or grime that littered the floor, like she had some kind of natural aversion to anything unclean.

By the time she got to the bar, Jack was already in a spot to greet the lady that was obviously here for business and not pleasure. “I am Serilda Sinclair, from the Sabertooth guild. Do you still need an escort for your cargo delivery?”

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

Oh what the hell was this now? Mythal wasn’t parked in the booth for very long when the door swung open, prompting the bouncer to go over and inspect who it was. It was still rather early in the afternoon so customers were rare and few between. But it was not a customer of the bar; oh no, it was something else entirely. A woman strode inside, addressing the bouncer with a hard tone that he could barely make out. But she had an air of supremacy about her, her stance firm and straight and her body tightened with instruction. The God Slayer groaned loudly and dropped his head down, his chin bouncing off his chest. He knew these kinds of people; his adoptive father had been just like this.  Serious to a fault and proper as well.

She strode up to the bar and greeted Jack, her tone as official as before. The bartender blinked at her and a hopeful smile crossed his face as he took a moment to look her over. "Sabertooth!” He said with such admiration. Mythal actually felt a bit of pain for his guild; his mentioning of Fairy Tail had practically gotten him scoffed at. He knew they had been dark before but they were past that. But it was surprising to hear that she wasn’t a Rune Knight. She certainly felt like one. He took a small sniff with his nose – smelled like one too.

    Mostly.

“Yes, I definitely still need an escort!” He declared excitedly, placing the mug he had been cleaning down. “Yer hired. You-…” He cut himself off, suddenly remembering that Mythal was still in the room. He glanced over at the God Slayer from the corner of his eye and let out a groan. “You’ll be partnering with that guy,” he said, jabbing a thumb over at Mythal. “I know it’s annoyin’ but he did technically claim the job first. It’s a one person job but he’s a bit of a…” He fell silent and then gestured by putting his thumb to his mouth and imitated drinking.

"I’m right here, asshole…” Mythal muttered to himself.

“So if you could just make sure he dun’ take any of the liquor on the job, I’ll pay ya each the full amount.” He leaned up against the bar and turned his gaze to Mythal. “That sound fair, ya sack of crap?” He called out to the God Slayer, far harsher to the known patron compared to the new one.

"You’ll be lucky I don’t pour it all on the ground,” Mythal grumbled to himself once more before he got up from the booth and walked over. "Whatever, Jack. Deal’s a deal,” he said to the man. A simple, one person job turned into an escort mission – how fun. "Let’s go,” he said to the woman simply, already heading towards the door of the bar.

"Character counts most when duty calls."

Pride swelled inside her when Jack spoke her guild’s name with near reverence, though the pride did not reach her face. However, the moment was short lived when he pointed out the vagabond she’d be working with. Serilda’s eyes panned over toward where he was pointing, toward a man that about as unkempt as she was tidy. Without bothering to hide the fact that she was sizing him up, her gaze stayed on Mythal even as Jack attempted to describe the man. She made note of his obvious annoyance over the situation.

Her only response to Jack’s feeble attempt to subtly call Mythal a drunkard was an unimpressed, “Charming.” It was obvious her lack of amusement was less about the knowledge that her new partner was a lush, and more toward Jack’s need to be animated and rude about the matter. “It won’t be a problem. We’ll return as soon as we’re done,” she assured the nightclub owner. Serilda wasn’t exactly thrilled about working with a stranger, but it wasn’t the first time and likely wouldn’t be the last. She would adapt, as she always did.

Jack gave her the location of the supplier, and then she followed the grumbling man out of the door. They hadn’t walked long before she broke the silence. “My name is Serilda,” she told him, assuming he hadn’t heard it from across the club when she’d introduced herself before. “May I know yours?” Her tone was as professional as it ever was, but it wasn’t impolite. Despite Jack’s behavior and words toward this man, she did not seem to have any intentions of treating him like a leper.

Presuming he took time to answer, Serilda kept her eyes on their surroundings as they walked. She was looking out for landmarks, suspicious persons watching them with too much interest, and other such things that would be important to ensuring the safety of the product. There were many streets and alleys in this town to be mindful of. The supplier wasn’t exactly close, either. By the time the two of them returned, the night would likely be in full swing. Perhaps the company providing the alcohol would be willing to lend them a cart or two to transport the items.

“Unless you have something else in mind, I suggest we take a different route back. I’m unfamiliar with this area, so I don’t know how likely it is that we might be approached on the way back by people looking to steal this delivery.” Was this job merely a formality, or did Jack have good reason to request wizards to protect his property? It was also an opportunity for her current partner to provide any information he deemed relevant, if he wished to, which would serve to help her better understand him as well. Jack’s description of the man certainly floated at the back of her mind, but his drama cautioned her from believing him fully until given a reason to.

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

Mythal may have been amused if he wasn’t so annoyed. The woman seemed earnestly unimpressed with Jack’s colorful mocking and even commented on it, even if it was a bit general. Either way, both men understood the tone behind it and it was enough to take some of the wind out of the night club owner’s sails. Mythal simply went about his business, used to people mocking him for his awkwardness and his silence. Granted, he had inadvertently caused a bar fight the last time he was here but that was on the other guy and not his. He had told him to leave him alone.

Serilda retrieved the information pertaining to location and followed after the annoyed God Slayer. In truth, she had taken the right means of it – he would have walked around town like a lost puppy if she hadn’t narrowed their search. Once she was in stride with him, she introduced herself as Serilda. "Of Sabertooth. I heard,” he finished the unspoken thought, reflecting back to the pride Jack had spoken with. He knew Sabertooth was one of the legal guilds, an organization that had been honored and cherished for quite some time. They were a bit too… warm and friendly for his taste, which explained why he had avoided joining them. Plus legal guilds always attracted so much attention – last thing he needed was eyes on him.

It took him a solid moment to realize she had asked for his name too. "Mythal,” he answered simply, his hands finding their ways into his pockets as they walked. Then he thought better of it. "Of Fairy Tail.” He wasn’t sure how the news of that would hit the woman, especially one as proper as her. His guild had quite the colorful history and he knew even his adoptive father would scoff at the idea of him being part of it. With his short introduction out of the way, he fell silent, only keeping his attention forward and on the road ahead. It would be night soon and he would feel a whole lot more comfortable in his skin, even if he wouldn’t be with present company. Man, he missed solo jobs.

She spoke up again, offering a tactic for when they returned with the booze. He shrugged at her suggestion. "Anything gets in our way, we just knock it out.” Two wizards protecting a shipment of booze would attract attention sure; but it was unlikely to bring about anyone that could take the two of them together. His senses were attempting to feel her out, get an idea of what her magical power was. She must have been strong, for she was able to mask it rather well. In fact, she felt almost… hollow. As they turned a corner, he couldn’t ignore the nagging question in his mind and went against his better nature. "You a former Rune Knight or somethin’? You seem awfully…” What was a good word? "Prudish.”

    Yeah, that’d definitely work.

"Character counts most when duty calls."

She raised a brow with some interest when he named her guild. This man had extremely good hearing. But other than that, she made no other reaction. It took him a moment to respond to her question, and she was beginning to wonder if he’d even heard it. He did provide his name. A beat later he also revealed which guild he was with. “I see.” It was impossible to tell by the tone of her voice what thoughts were going through her head. Fortunately, she wasn’t going to make him guess.

The pregnant silence following the statement was broken when she told him, “Fairy Tail has had quite the history lately. Then again, they always have.” It wasn’t an insult. The guild had become infamous for a number of reasons since its inception. “Sabertooth was once allied with Fairy Tail, and many of our wizards still respect yours. Your guild’s fall from grace with the council was hardly a surprise, given the circumstances. Everyone with sense knows a member of Fairy Tail would never surrender one of their guild mates, no matter their history. The council should have seen it coming.”

It seemed like her thoughts were going to end there, but then, almost as an afterthought, she added, “Perhaps they did.” It wouldn’t be hard to interpret the meaning behind her ominous statement. It wasn’t exactly a secret that, as much as the council acknowledged and appreciated Fairy Tail, the guild had also always been their greatest liability due to the destructive habits of its members. Serilda wouldn’t be shocked if the council had used the incident as an excuse to wash their hands of them.

For a minute it seemed as though there might be an almost pleasant conversation between the two. Then he called her a prude. Not that it was an untrue statement, of course, but it still earned him a narrowed look through her peripheral vision. Serilda scrutinized him briefly before looking forward again. “I am not. Though given that becoming a Rune Knight is what I’m ultimately aiming for, I’ll choose to take your observations as a compliment. What about you? Are you a crooked drunk like Jack claims you are? It’s not every day I get paid to protect something from the person completing the job with me.” Two could play the blunt game.

Before long, they found themselves at the supplier’s depot. Serilda explained who they were and why they were there, and it took only a couple minutes for the merchandise to be loaded into two ancient looking wooden carts. The woman voiced her opinion on the state of them, but was curtly assured they had been holding up since longer than she was alive and would continue to do so. Soon enough, they were on their way back to the nightclub, each steering a rickety wheelbarrow that protested each crack and dip in the road.

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

Mythal may not have had the blind dedication to Fairy Tail like others but he did, at the very least, have a bit of pride in it. They had been welcoming of him, offered him jobs and its members had done their best to offer him help on jobs as well. Anti-social as he was, he knew when he was getting treated with respect and he would give respect in turn. Serilda seemed… neutral to the knowledge at first, simply stating her observation of the fact. But surprisingly, she continued with a far more… understanding viewpoint. He couldn’t deny that even the things he had heard about Fairy Tail, they had certainly caused more than enough anguish for the ‘legal’ magic world. It was odd to think about now; before they would protect a guild member to the death. Now… one wrong step and you were likely banned. But there was no point in mentioning that. The past was the past and whatever Fairy Tail was now didn’t seem likely to change anytime soon. It was best to just let things be as they were. But it was at least, partially sentimental.

Would the magic council have used Fairy Tail’s antics to turn them dark and save themselves some trouble? It was possible; the council was human after all and humanity was all about filling its own greed. As long as they didn’t try to hinder his jobs, he didn’t really care what they thought. Worse yet, they had better not recognize him for anything either. Whatever the case, her thoughts were interesting. Perhaps he had misjudged her.

He certainly had insulted her; maybe prudish wasn’t the right word. Her tone collected more bite to it as she explained that she fully intended on joining the Rune Knights someday in the future. She also chose to take his words for compliments; he hadn’t really meant them as compliments or insults but by her words, seemed he had given the impression of the latter. He sighed gently and dropped his head as she turned the topic back onto him, wanting to know more about him. Specifically, she wanted to know why Jack had claimed he was a pain in the ass. "Drunk? Obviously,” he answered, gesturing to his rather worn outfit. "Only reason that jackass says I’m crooked is because I punched one of his best clients. He deserved it.” He didn’t explain much more than that. "So now I’m the drunk who causes trouble and can’t be trusted.” He shrugged. "Ain’t gonna bother me. I’ve had worse things said ‘bout me.” Far worse things.

Receiving two carts that were probably the first carts ever build by man was… unsettling. Alcohol in barrels wasn’t exactly the lightest thing to carry, even for someone with enhanced strength like Mythal. Heaven forbid a barrel fell over and cracked, he’d probably be blamed completely for it. But off they went, each one leading their carts slowly and surely back the way they came. As they went, Mythal began to slowly look around down each alley they passed. His senses felt something… strange. Uneasiness in the air. He wasn’t getting supernatural knowledge just yet but this certainly was building to something. "Hope you’re as good a fighter as you are a carter,” he stated simply.

Well, at least he was honest about himself. Mythal didn’t hesitate to own up to being a drunk, even going so far as to indicate his disheveled appearance as being indicative of that fact. But it seemed he was disliked by Jack for more specific reasons. “Hm.” There was little she could say in response. She wasn’t there, so for all she knew the guy had deserved to be punched. Granted, starting a fight in a bar was boorish at best, but there was little point voicing such thoughts now. His explanation of Jack’s mannerism would suffice.

They didn’t have too much farther to go when Mythal sensed potential trouble. Serilda sensed it just after he did. There was a tension in the air, and it was coming closer. “If I wasn’t, this would have been a poor job choice.” She glanced around. The street was conspicuously empty, and she definitely heard someone shut a window hastily nearby.

That was all the confirmation she needed. She stopped and set the cart down. Serilda wasn’t an expert in battle by any means, but she knew a thing or two about controlling an encounter. If there was to be a fight, let the initiators come to them. The woman walked around her cart and stood in front of it, at ease with her hands clasped calmly in front of her.

By the time the three assailants stepped out into the open, Serilda -- and presumably Mythal -- was clearly waiting for them. It was only briefly, but there was a moment of uncertainty in the group’s faces as they realized their advantage of surprise had been lost. They recovered quickly. The leader of the little trio, a stocky man with scraggly teeth and an odor that surely reached beyond the city limits, smiled at them. “Well, lookie here, kids. Our prey is waiting patiently for us to--”

Serilda interrupted him, already disinterested in whatever lame joke he was going to attempt to make. “Just stop.” The man blinked at her. “If you value your health, you’d do well to move along without incident. This is your only warning.”

He scowled at her. His great mood had gone sour in a matter of seconds. “Well, ain’t you a right bitch?” Serilda merely kept her level gaze, the childish insult doing nothing to break her calm. This only made him angrier. He looked toward his lackies. “You know what to do.” At his command, the three of them fanned out in front of her and Mythal.

“So be it.” Serilda withdrew her scimitar and squared off against the closest; another man, skinnier than the first with ragged clothing and a nailed club. Luckily, these didn’t seem to be wizards so much as common thugs looking for a free drink, or jewel to make off it. She sensed no magic from them, so unless they were keeping it hidden this would hopefully be a quick fight.

All Boozed Up Empty Re: All Boozed Up

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

He wasn’t surprised that she was ready for combat; people of that stance and nature were always prepared. Mythal continued to ease the cart forward, even as she stopped her own cart and prepared for battle. The God Slayer went several feet more until the three bandits-to-be stepped out to block his way. He glanced up at them and sighed dramatically, placing the cart down and looking all together exhausted already. They began to mock the two of them but Serilda was quick to interrupt them, denoting any bad guy monologue that was possibly coming their way. It should be a crime to stop and pontificate as it was.

She gave them the option to leave, to avoid whatever confrontation this was going to become. Mythal simply glanced between the two parties, as the bandits snarled and snapped at her, clearly upset his moment had been crushed underneath her bluntness.  "The lady did warn ya’,” Mythal said with a shrug, finally taking the time to walk out from behind the cart and placing himself in front of it. The three men spread out between them, armed with the best weapons first offenders r’ us could provide. Serilda seemed to be the one that would be getting double teamed – she had been the one to antagonize them after all.

    Yes… she had.

"Hold on a minute…” Mythal raised his hand to the parties, right as the tensions were about to boil over. He turned just enough to look over at Serilda, a strange look in his gaze before the crimson orbs lazily moved to greet the bandit leader. "I’m not gettin’ paid enough for this crap. The guy who hired us treated me like crap and now expects me to fight for a couple o’ barrels of booze? Not likely.”

    The bandit leader blinked. “Wh-What?”

"Tell ya what; how ‘bout I just look the other way. You three can do whatever you want. Just leave me out of it,” he made a dismissive wave at the carts and even a bit at Serilda. His hands slid back into his pockets and he began to walk forward, only stopped when the bandit in front of him held out his poorly constructed hammer.

“Should… should we…?” He asked, turning to the other bandit.

“Let him go. Look at him. He’s no better than the rest of us,” the other one said, actually taking a moment to eye Mythal up. It was true; they both seemed on the same level in terms of presentation and attire. He was probably just taking this job to make a little jewel, just like they were here to steal the booze and sell it for themselves. As Mythal started to walk away, he called out. “Hey. On the other hand… you could help us take out this stuck up bitch and take some of the jewel we get for sellin’ it? Might feel good to beat on someone who thinks they better than you?”

Mythal stopped mid-stride, frozen in his spot for a solid beat. Then he turned back around, his face still neutral save for an odd glimmer in his eyes once more. "A cut of it and a portion of the barrel,” he said, bartering with the man.

The bandit leader couldn’t help the wicked grin. “Deal.”

Mythal nodded and walked back, now putting himself between two of the bandits. The three on two had suddenly become a four on one. The bandit leader turned his gaze back to Serilda. “Sorry wench. This is gonna hurt,” he said, cracking his knuckles on his free hand.

"Yeah it is,” was the last thing the bandit leader heard before a fist smashed into the side of his head, sending him flying into the brick wall beside him. The other bandit on Mythal’s other side spun his head to look at his boss but only found the God Slayer’s hand delivering a palm strike to his face. Mythal carried through the motion, pushing the man off of his feet and sending him soaring into the other bandit behind him. Each one smashed into the opposite wall, sliding down into a limp and beaten clump.

Mythal sighed through his nostrils, rolling his eyes from one pile of useless bandit to the other. None of the three got back up, not even a sound escaping from their curled up forms. With the fight over before it really began, Mythal walked back to his cart and took hold of it before turning his head to look at Serilda. "Onwards?”

All Boozed Up Empty Re: All Boozed Up

"Character counts most when duty calls."

What is he playing at here? Serilda wondered as Mythal paused the fight and looked back at her. It was the longest they’d held eye contact since they’d met, and the first time she consciously took note of the fact that his irises were crimson colored. Her expression did not change, but a slight twitch in her brow betrayed her churning mind.

She kept her piercing gaze on him as he went on to explain that he wasn’t getting paid enough to deal with this attack. Jack’s words itched at the back of her mind, asking her to protect his cargo not just from strangers like this three but also, specifically, from Mythal. Perhaps the nightclub owner’s concerns had been merited after all. Then again, his sentiments weren’t the only thing itching at her mind. Mythal had made no effort to be honest about his nature and why Jack was upset with him. Did that make Mythal an honorable person, or was he simply giving her fair warning about what to expect should a situation like this arise?

These were the thoughts running through her mind as Mythal seemingly struck a deal and positioned himself among them to turn on her. Serilda decided she didn’t know her current partner well enough to make a judgement call on him. However, she was educated enough to take note that he had placed himself perfectly to get a jump on the rest of them. She decided he’d show his true hand momentarily, one way or another.

“Very well,” was the cool reply. “I guess I’ll just have to collect my payment, as well as your share, once I’m done.” Her calm facade hid the tension that had sparked inside of her. The three muggers she could deal with, but Mythal was both a wizard and a wild card. That merited caution.

She shifted her stance to accommodate the change in battle structure, the tip of her sword lowering slightly. The smelly man leered at her, promising her pain that he seemed to think would be worse than what his odor was already delivering. And then, in the blink of an eye, it was over. Mythal capitalized on his position perfectly and executed a handful of quick strikes that rendered the entire trio useless.

As he checked his work and made sure none of them were going to get back up, Serilda considered the other wizard once more. He continued to be a bit of an enigma, and she couldn’t say that she necessarily liked the fact that he was a heavy drinker with no care for his appearance. Indeed, she would never have approached him of her own volition if given the choice. He looked about as filthy as the men he’d knocked out. However, he had proven himself a reliable and worthy wizard.

    That would do for now.

She slipped her weapon back in its sheath. “Onward,” Serilda agreed. There was no point in conjecturing over what just happened, and neither of them seemed to be the type for those kind of conversations anyway.

When they arrived back at the nightclub, they still had every barrel they’d arrived with fully intact. A miracle, given the state of the carts they carried them in. The bouncer pointed out where they could drop the load and said that Jack was in the manager’s office. Once at the office, however, they discovered that not only was the door locked but Jack had fallen asleep inside.

They tried knocking a couple times and calling out to him, but Jack couldn’t hear him over the music thumping through the walls from the main stage. Neither of them intended on leaving without being paid first. Luckily, this was not a difficult hurdle to jump. With little more than a passive focus on her intent, Serilda stepped up to the door and then simply walked right through it, the particles of emptiness in her body shifting themselves to align with those that existed in the door so she could pass without resistance. Once inside, she turned and unlocked the handle so Mythal could come inside as well.

“Jack.” Her stern, commanding voice, now much louder and clearer without a wall to muffle it, woke the manager up with a visible start. “We have returned with your delivery.”
