It was nice to have a day off, if that’s what this could be called.

As required by the Rune Knight bylaws, members of the administration were entitled to days off after working a set amount of shifts. Such drivel didn’t really mean much to Mythal because he, honestly, kind of just skimmed over the details about vacations and such. He assumed if he was going to have some time away from work, it would be with Seri. And since they had a wedding to plan and supposedly some kind of honeymoon right after, it seemed in his best interest to simply hold onto it. Well, imagine his surprise when the representative to the Magic Council sent a message insisting that he take a day to two days off, so as to stay in line with the Knight regulations.

So that was what he was doing; taking a day off. Granted, he wasn’t truly taking a break from work -- there was still plenty of paperwork he had to sort through. Luckily the Engineering Corp had been hard at work at updating their ability to store and log information by digitizing all the documentation. Now it was just as easy as buying a lacri-device and connecting to the server over the Lacnet. From there he could review all the paperwork he needed and send out responses to those needed replies on certain topics.

He was sitting in his living room, dressed down in his casual clothes, and typing away on the computer. An empty plate sat on the glass coffee table in front of him and a half empty glass of water next to it; the remnants of his lunch from a couple of minutes ago. Idly his eyes lifted from the screen in front of him and chanced a look out the glass door, where Gren was lying in the sun in a deep sleep. The massive Star Wolf encompassed the entirety of the glass door’s vision and beyond and he had shimmied up against the wooden fence that separated Mythal’s yard from his neighbor’s. But he was so large that he very nearly lay more than halfway up on the fence.

The sound of the door unlatching caught his attention and he turned his gaze to glance over his shoulder. At first, he couldn’t see anyone at the open door, though the barrier itself closed only a second later. But as he heard the clack of sandals on the wood, he knew immediately that it was Susano. “How’s it goin’ pal?” he called out to the demi-god.

The Thunder God poked his head around the couch, his face quizzical. “Mythal? Home so early? I figured your shift with the Rune Knights would have kept you steward for several more hours.”

“Mandatory day off,” he said with a scoff.

“Mandatory day off? An interesting concept. I wasn’t aware that officials within the law were required to take day breaks from their duties. It seems counterproductive,” the demi-god said as he came around the couch and hopped up on it to sit down.

“Well, when yer’ workin’ in a structured judicial system, there’s a whole buncha’ rules and regulations so the Knights don’t get overworked. Helps to keep ‘em from makin’ mistakes and whatnot,” the Darkness King explained with a shrug. “But how ‘bout you? Where you’ve been off to?”

“Why, I was over in Hosenka at the Lusty Titans guild,” Susano replied nonchalantly.

That caught Mythal’s attention. A teasing grin pulled on his face as he turned to look at the demi-god. “Were ya now?” he asked, already chuckling. “Somebody’s got hisself a bit of an addiction, huh?”

The demi-god waved him off. “Now, now there is no attachment. Just good old fashion fun. It’s been a long time since I’ve found anyone that is as free thinking as my people used to be. A whole guild is dedicated to it!”

“Sure. And I bet you went there for all the otha’ ladies, not just Agatha, right?” Susano didn’t say a word, though an impish little grin spread on his face. “You’re a dastardly lil’ bastard,” Mythal said with a laugh.

Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
It had been quite some time since Ozorith had involved himself into the life of his paladin. Not that he wasn’t keeping the occasional eye on her, of course, but one did not simply enter Kingdom Darkness as a mortal and return unscatched. Serilda had performed admirably, or so he’d learned over the days after their return to the mortal world. It was impossible to get the full details as Kingdom Darkness was one of the few domains he hadn’t successfully managed to plant agents in. It was simply too toxic there, and he didn’t have the resources to keep too many of his followers there safely for long enough to do any good. Most of what he had for combatting the realm he’d given to Serilda.

But even with a realm that was generally closed off from the rest of the universe, word still managed to travel. It hadn’t taken too long at all for Faera to reach out to him directly, which proved to be a tickling encounter. While she hadn’t been overly incensed with him, there was no mistaking just how furious she was that he’d managed to foil her plans to finally get her hands on Mythal. The goddess of darkness had asked quite a number of questions regarding Serilda, which Ozorith deflected for the most part, electing instead to tease her with half truths and leading statements that might continue to pique her interest and curiosity but did next to nothing by way of giving her actual answers. He knew Faera had now set her sights on eliminating the mortal noblewoman, but Ozorith wasn’t anywhere near ready to lose his new vassal and as such was more than happy to lead the goddess in circles.

And frankly ever since then, he’d had a great deal of other things come up that needed addressing. Like Kingdom Darkness, Glacier Sanctum moved at a speed of time that wasn’t in sync with that of the mortal world. A few hours within his realm was the equivalent of several days for those on Earthland. Since his machinations had called him away for several weeks with only the occasional chance to check in on how things were going, it had been months, if not close to a year, since he had last spoken with Serilda. That wasn’t much of a problem, of course -- he’d told her that for the most part her life would remain unchanged in working with him.

But frankly, she didn’t exactly need the encouragement. As he’d foreseen, Serilda was a woman of such staunch conviction that in that time she had moved up several places in their world and named herself one of the most powerful people of all the countries that made up the continent they called home. The path that had led her there had been full of confrontation. He knew because every time she loosed her anger on the world around her, he had felt his own power magnify and expand. Yes, he had certainly made the right choice and played the game perfectly so as to ensure that Serilda was pulled into his collection.

It was time for him to reveal himself once more, however. If he waited too long she would forget her respect and oath to him, and while a part of him was amused by that he did not desire at present to force her to submit. Willing servants were always more efficient. Before he went to her, however, he had decided to take it upon him to greet her other half first. As luck would have it, Mythal was home without Serilda around the time that Ozorith finally took the efforts to reach out. The demon lord listened in on the conversation that the Darkness King was having with some small demi-god whom Ozorith didn’t recognize nor care about -- though the comments about the little god’s liaison with Ruzatz’s wife was of some amusement.

They would hear his light chuckle first, the sound echoing within the room before Ozorith materialized himself once again on Mythal’s couch, the same place he’d been before. “Well, it’s not like the woman is exactly difficult to come by,” he commented with amusement. “She’ll sleep with anything that moves, generally. There is a reason my lustful counterpart was drawn to her.” Ozorith was garbed in a mostly white outfit trimmed in black, with a purple sash around his waist. He had long brown hair that was tied behind his head in a loose ponytail, a single strand free from it to dangle in front of his face. A pair of dark brown eyes regarded Mythal with a considering look, taking the man in and measuring him up in his mind. He barely paid any attention at all to Susano, nor to the massive wolf that slumbered outside in the sun.

There was an easy smile on his face, though there was no mistaking the air of superiority about the man. “I do hope you can forgive my sudden appearance. We are long since past due to become acquainted with one another, and I have been very interested in meeting the man my staunch and stubborn vassal was willing to throw her convictions away over. You have my sincerest gratitude for your aid, however unwitting, in securing me the strongest Sword I’ve ever had thus far…”

    “...Darkness King.”

It was actually kind of amazing how quickly one could go from perfectly content to on edge all at once.

There was something unnerving about the fact that, despite how strong Mythal had been getting over the past couple of months, nothing had alerted him to an intruder in his own home. Normally he could feel everything everywhere; his senses were so fine tuned that they were on par with some of the greatest hunters in the world. He could feel movement through the slight shifts in shadow, even as minimal as the spaces between wood boards. But nothing had prepared him in case anyone, especially unwanted company, had managed to get within the proximity of his own house without detection.

Susano and him were in the middle of a conversation, casually talking like they were wont to do every now and then. A chuckle had come from the Darkness King but a secondary voice had joined in the chorus, mimicking his amusement. In a flash, he was up from his seat, his hand stretching out along with his magic. Down from upstairs came Curse, spinning wildly as it was summoned to his hand. It landed flat against his palm and his fingers curled around the shaft as he spun, bringing the blade around towards the couch he had just been sitting on. The demi-god had also leapt off of the couch towards the stairway, a flash of lightning crackling into his hand and forming into a long, serrated sword.

Mythal’s sword came to stop right before Ozorith’s neck, mere inches away from slicing into his flesh. Yet the Prime Sin didn’t even look slightly flummoxed in his state, easy brown eyes focusing in on Mythal casually as he relaxed against the cushions, looking just as confident and proud as Serilda had described him. He remarked about Agatha, claiming that sleeping with the woman was nothing to write home about -- she was as easy as they came. There was a slightly offended growl that emerged from Susano’s mouth but he held his ground, unwilling to move until Mythal had. On the outside, Gren had sensed something troubling in his master and had rolled over to look in the window. Noticing that the darkness slayer was armed and on edge, the Star Wolf moved up to the door and butted his head against it, trying to force it open.

Ozorith continued speaking his mind, asking forgiveness for his rude intrusion. He believed that they were far beyond the timeframe that they should have been properly introduced, as Mythal was the man that had forced Serilda’s hand and given up on her stance against the Prime Sin. He even had the audacity to thank the Darkness King for his part in the grand play, helping the Voidwalker become the man’s paladin and Sword, giving him sarcastic honors by acknowledging him as the Darkness King. Mythal didn’t reply at first, his stance firm and grounded as he stared back at the demon before him, brimming with a slew of emotions but none of them quite reaching his face.

“Funny,” he finally said, a single brow twitching slightly. “I imagined you to be more intimidatin’.” After a moment of consideration, he pulled on the lever on his sword and folded it up, sliding it onto the hook on his back.

“Mythal, what are you doing?” Susano hissed, unbending in his guard. “Do you have any idea who this is?”

“I know exactly who he is, Susano. I’ve been waitin’ a long time for him to show his ugly mug. Just wasn’t expectin’ him to intrude again in my own home. But when you ain’t original…” he glanced over at the demi-god briefly. “I want to kill the sonuvabitch as much as you do, Sus… but if we fight ‘im here, there ain’t no way that other people in this neighborhood are gettin’ out unscathed. Besides, if the creep wanted to fight, I doubt he’d simply just appear like nothin’s happenin’. Then again you might, wouldn’t you? Got a pretty big ego stick shove up ya ass, from what I hear.”

Mythal took a moment to look back towards Gren, giving him a gentle look to ensure the Star Wolf they were fine. The large wolf calmed down but stayed near the door, clearly ready to burst through if he was needed. Even through the glass, the rumble of a growl could be heard as he stared at Ozorith.

The God Slayer stepped over to the opposing seat and flopped down into it, a look of what could have been considered boredom passing over his features as he set his gaze on Ozorith once more. “So what’s up, bub? Here to try and lay claim over Seri or somethin’? Throw your weight around like yer some kinda hot shot? Cuz uh… that ain’t gonna go over too well.”

Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
He had to admit, the mortal’s reaction time was impeccable. Ozorith had barely finished laughing before Mythal was on his feet, an impressively large sword racing down to his hand from the upstairs to arc around and stop mere inches from the Prime Sin’s throat. While the lord of wrath didn’t react to move out of the way or even raise a brow in surprise or amusement, his smirk did deepen just a hair. He made his comment about Agatha, drawing an angered noise from the demi-god though as before Ozorith continued to more or less ignore the short man, not deeming him worth his attention -- though he did glance idly to the side when something started pushing against the door to the backyard, finding Gren. “My, he’s certainly grown, hasn’t he?” was his only comment before turning back to Mythal.

There was a brief moment of tense silence while the darkness slayer struggled to figure out what he was going to do about the home invasion. Ozorith waited patiently, neither mocking nor baiting him to come to a decision any sooner than Mythal pleased. His reward was a bit of sass as Faera’s vessel commented on how he’d always pictured Ozorith to be more intimidating than he was. The statement drew a low chuckle from the demon, who unsurprisingly seemed to enjoy the mortal’s wit.

Mythal sheathed his sword, drawing distress from his counterpart who seemed worried that the Darkness King didn’t know who had joined them. But Mythal knew exactly who Ozorith was and said as much, stating that he’d been waiting for the demon lord to rear his head. Truthfully he had just expected the Prime to not show up in the same place twice, evening going so far as to try and insult him again by commenting on his originality. “What can I say? This place has good memories for me,” Was the only idle interjection, smooth and even through his unbreaking smirk. The slayer went on to explain to Susano that while it would bring him no greater joy than to devoid Ozorith of his life, that wasn’t going to happen without risking the lives of a lot more innocent people in the area. That, and he assumed that if Ozorith was here for more than just a social visit he probably would have done something about it already.

Taking the jabs with grace, the demon lord casually examined a fingernail. “Well, I’d say my ego is well deserved. I do quite a lot of work to get what I want, and from where I’m sitting that has served even you well in the past, has it not?” His eyes flicked back up to Mythal with a knowing look. Bark as much as he wanted, the Rune Knight couldn’t deny that if it hadn’t been for Ozorith intervention in Serilda’s life, Mythal would have died a while ago -- or worse.

The slayer waved his hound down, encouraging the beast to relax. Gren complied though not without keeping near the door and growling his displeasure, the glass from the door rumbling slightly from the vibration. Mythal took up a seat across from Ozorith, looking for all the world like he was entirely disinterested and unimpressed by the demon’s presence. He approached him with faux camaraderie, speaking as though they were old friends even as he inquired as to Ozorith’s presence and wondered if he was here to throw his weight around or mark Serilda as his territory. Apparently, such behaviors would not be well received.

He chuckled again. “As terrifying as that sounds,” the demon lord said, his tone very much inferring that he didn’t consider Mythal even remotely a threat, “You are making a great deal of assumptions about me. I have no need, nor desire, to prove myself against a mortal -- even one that was intended to be the vessel of an insane goddess. Similarly, there is no need for me to lay any sort of claim over Serilda. She came to me of her own accord and agreed to work for me with the full understanding of what it would mean to have me as a constant in her life.”

“And anyway, I’m sure she already told you that I took no ownership of her soul or anything dramatic like that. Serilda is more or less free to live her life as she pleases, with her only obligations to me being to enforce her judgement when she deems it necessary and to assist me here and there with more… deific related matters. And I must say she has been doing quite a fine job. Permanently disfigured one of Faera’s Trumpets and decimating his army within the goddess’ own realm; leading the charge against that invasion of your council to place herself in charge of an entire country’s first and last line of defense; being set above nearly all of her peers to mark her as one of the most prominent and dangerous mages between all the countries on this continent… No, it is quite clear to me that letting her do her own thing for the most part is exactly where I need her to be. I am more than pleased with her.”

Despite his obvious arrogance, he did not appear to be mocking the woman. If anything, he was being quite true to her accomplishments and authentic in his sense of pride in the woman, however twisted and selfish it was. “As I said before, I merely decided it was time I paid you a social visit, if only to satiate my curiosity over who had caught her interest so deeply that she would relinquish her principles as wholly as she did. I will be requiring some of her services soon, and figured it best to get this confrontation out of the way sooner rather than later at a more inconvenient time.”

He was quite sure that Mythal had a fair amount of thoughts and opinions to throw his way. Better to let the man express himself now than at a time where it would delay the work that needed to be done. “I hear congratulations are in order, by the way. I can’t say that it doesn’t greatly amuse me that my Sword will be in union with Faera’s lost vessel. Not only will that be quite advantageous for me, but the crack brained goddess is going to be even more livid than she already is.” The very thought made him grin just the littlest bit.

It seemed that Susano had no intention of calming down, his stance firm and unmoving. His gaze was like daggers towards the Prime Sin, seated only feet away. While only a demi-god and having been trapped inside a tower for centuries, even he was informed enough to know when he was in the presence of a powerful, terrible demon. Honestly, what was worse for the thunder deity was the awareness, almost immediately, that he stood no chance should anything come to violence. The magical difference between himself and Ozorith was vast and, while not in danger of being vaporized without a fight, it was a war he wouldn’t win. And based on what he felt from Mythal, the Rune Knight didn’t stand a chance either.

But what Susano didn’t know was that Mythal had become quite adept at hiding his magical presence, layering it under falsehoods of weakness. It had been a very long time since he had released everything he was capable of and that had been at Vintermyr with his battle with Vicki. That had been almost a year ago and since then, he’d grown stronger still. He refused to let his power simply hang in the air, wanting to conceal it quite literally for cases like this. Ozorith was strong, there was no doubt about that -- one with so much pride had to be. And while Mythal didn’t hold a lot of arrogance in his own abilities, he was quite sure he could push himself to destroy the Prime Sin.

Yet he didn’t. He stood there, listening to the man make love to himself with the sound of his own voice, highly amused that Mythal would even try to insult him. He was exactly the way that Serilda had described him, ego and all. He could take pride in a lot of things -- hell, he could even take credit for the God Slayer’s life still carrying on -- but Mythal wasn’t going to give him any verbal due. Nor was he going to allow the annoyance to cause any further damage than he already had. Sorano was going to be on edge for the rest of the day and there was little doubt he’d be unhappy that they hadn’t acted. Gren would understand but he could feel the hatred within Mythal and it was feeding him as well. The Darkness King took his time relaxing his inner self before he sat himself down, right across from the Prime Sin.

His words weren’t really a threat towards Ozorith, if only because Mythal knew it wouldn’t matter in the long run anyways. But the demon took it as such, making it quite clear that he didn’t consider the Rune Knight a threat. Mythal sat there, staring in almost disinterest as Ozorith waxed poetic about his status against that of a mortal, even if that mortal was meant to be the embodiment of what he referred to as an ‘insane’ goddess. An interesting statement -- Mythal knew that Faera was insane but he didn’t think that was beyond the scope of what the other gods and demons were used to. To hear that one actually considered her schemes and current state as beyond the norm was… curious. His attention snapped back to Ozorith as he continued to monologue of how all the assumptions Mythal had thrown his way were wildly beyond the scope. It was true that Oz hadn’t taken Serilda’s soul nor had he enlisted her into any kind of schedule around his time but there was still the caveat that there were things he would want her to do for him.

Beyond that, he was more than a little proud of his choice in Sword and how she had progressed in the world. He hadn’t needed to intervene at all -- she had set herself up to be quite the force within the world. But that wasn’t why he was here, apparently. No, he wanted to meet Mythal, the man that had so influenced Serilda that when push came to shove, she had thrown away her concerns and devoted herself to Ozorith’s cause. He claimed he would need her services relatively soon and that knowledge had inspired him to get the meeting -- or confrontation as he called it -- over with, so that it didn’t cause an issue later.

He then took a moment to congratulate him, though it was far more amusing to him that Mythal, as Faera’s former vessel, was intending on marrying his Sword. He could see the advantage in it as well as the humor that came from Faera being quite steamed over the idea. His widened grin earned him a rolling of the eyes from the Darkness King. “Are ya done?” he asked, sounding as bored as possible. “Because like… I dunno if you gods and demons were required to take a monologue class or somethin’ to get where you are but it gets old.”

He sighed softly as he sat forward a bit on his chair. “First off, I ain’t threatenin’ you so you can stop tryin’ to stroke your inflated sense of self by actin’ like I ain’t worth your time. Believe it or not, you ain’t worth mine either. You’re just another corpse in my future that will get handled when the time comes. Second, I know yer all proud of yourself for pickin’ Seri, tryin’ to get under my skin with your backhanded compliments and insults. But yer clearly some kind of blind idiot if you think she ain’t gonna turn around one day and run you through. See, I don’t have any plans for you. I know she’s gonna be the one to end your life and I’m gonna be there when it all goes to shit in front of you. Pro’lly laughin’ if I’m bein’ honest.”

“As far as I’m concerned, yer just as cracked as Faera is. Whatever advantage you think yer gettin’ out of Seri and I gettin’ married, you can forget about it. How ‘bout you stay outta my way, stay outta my house and pretend to look down from your pretty little pedestal for a little while longer? Because here’s the truth, bub -- you ain’t got a single idea of who yer dealin’ with.” He leaned back in the chair, reaching up to idly scratch his scruff. “Thanks though -- for the congrats and all. You’ll understand if you don’t receive an invitation to the weddin’.”

Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
At this point it was almost a game between which of the two men could be less impressed or bothered by the other. It wasn’t the first time Ozorith had tangled in this manner with a mortal before, but even he would readily admit that Mythal was impressively more staunch about it than others in the past. Then again, it added up, did it not? This man wasn’t fully a mortal, his blood half that of a celestial angel, which did make him a cut above the rest of his peers, even Serilda. Plus, he had spent practically his entire life being terrorized by Faera and her minions. This wasn’t the first time Mythal had played this song and dance, so he was more readily able to step up to the plate about it than Serilda was the first couple times Ozorith and the woman had talked.

Mythal rolled his eyes, wondering if the demon was done with his speech and commenting on the monologue. Then, the slayer sat forward and made a number of up front statements about how he wasn’t threatening him so there was no need for Ozorith to supposedly make love to his ego and marking Mythal as a nobody. He wasn’t worth the slayer’s time, the man said, remarking that as far as he was concerned Ozorith was just a man that was going to wind up dead at some point and that was going to be the end of it. But more importantly, Mythal lead into his thoughts that the demon lord was stupid if he didn’t think that Serilda would eventually betray him. Mythal didn’t have plans for the Prime, only because he was fully confident that his fiancee would ultimately make the move to end Ozorith’s life, an act which Mythal himself would find all too amusing.

Ozorith’s expression remained as amused as ever, though his eyes deepened a bit with what could only be anticipation at all the dark promises. He didn’t even seem too upset at being compared to Faera, Mythal remarking how Ozorith could stop counting his blessings now since the slayer’s union with Serilda was going to mean jack all to the Prime since neither of them would help him. He was instructed to stay out of Mythal’s way and stick to watching from the shadows, since he clearly didn’t know who he was dealing with. Sitting back in his chair, Mythal thanked him dryly for the congratulations before making it clear that Ozorith wouldn’t be invited.

“Oh, that’s quite alright,” he assured the man casually. “I much prefer to show up places uninvited.” It was basically a guarantee that the Prime Sin absolutely planned on being there for the big day, whether they wanted them or not. Ozorith chuckled a little, then. Mythal had accused him of having an ego, which wasn’t incorrect, but it was highly hypocritical when the mortal had gone on to try and act like Ozorith didn’t understand how deep the man’s abilities laid. No mere mortal could serve as a host for a god, so he knew quite well the potential of power that Mythal had. But as far as Ozorith was aware, while Mythal could certainly put up a fair bit of a fight, the man had nothing that would be needed to take down someone like himself. Afterall, Mythal’s magic was to slay gods, not demons.

Still, he had to admit to himself that he rather liked this bold and undaunted man. If Serilda had been any less ideal, he could very well have seen himself looking at twisting Mythal himself to his own machinations. Ozorith waved a dismissive hand. “I have no doubts that Serilda will make one, if not many, attempts on my life. She wouldn’t be the first. In the domain of wrath, it stands to reason that there will always be friction as my servants and followers are generally strong willed. If anything, I look forward to her making her move… though she may be less than thrilled by the consequences.”

Ozorith shrugged. “But really, Mythal, do you think I would waste my time coming here at all if I thought you not worth my time? You brush me off because you don’t like me, don’t like the threat I pose to your beloved, but even she would argue against the wisdom of that. Your opinion of me doesn’t make what I have to offer of any less value, whether or not you want to hear them from me. Such as: the recent conversation I had with Faera attempting to dig into information about Serilda, specifically. I even happen to have information on the whereabouts of your derelict sister…”

“But if you don’t want that kind of knowledge from me, then I can certainly take my leave. I’m sure she won’t hurt that many more people in the time it would take you to catch up to her the hard way.”

As expected, Ozorith had no intention of secluding himself even without an invitation to the wedding. It didn’t make Mythal any happier to hear it confirmed but he had a strong feeling that would be the case. The demon simply couldn’t help but make things about himself, even on a day that rightfully didn’t belong to him. If the Darkness King were in a worse state of mine, he may have taken extreme exception to the matter and given him a few choice words to shove where the sun doesn't shine. But he was prepared for this kind of confrontation -- it was an inevitable meeting that had already taken too long to occur. Clearly the Prime Sin had either  been biding his time to make his meal last or he simply wanted to make them wonder.

Pride was such a cursed thing and Mythal absolutely abhorred sitting across from the embodiment of that creed. Yet he managed to stomach the bile as the Prime Sin waved him off, simply dumbing down the inevitable attempts on his life as acceptable, even supposed. He seemed to believe that in his realm of control, the idea of usurping titles and places of power was part of what made it so strong. He stated he looked forward to Serilda’s challenges, even if she would certainly not enjoy the outcome from her actions. And for that, the demon earned the tiniest of smirks from Mythal, as if he knew something else and was refusing to speak it outloud. Whether he did or not was besides the point -- the Rune Knight Director had no intention of letting the man simply assume something based on his pride without giving an indication that perhaps, he was terribly wrong in his calculations.

With that said and done, Ozorith decided to focus more on their meeting -- the demon lord wondering if Mythal truly thought he would come here if he didn’t think he was worth the time? He continued on the thought, observing that Mythal was so quick to discard Ozorith just because of his personal feelings and how that, in and of itself, was foolish. The Darkness King’s own obstinate dislike of the Prime Sin wasn’t going to downplay the juicy information that Ozorith had brought with him, dependent on whether Mythal was willing to listen. He provided a small taste; admitting that he’d recently had a conversation with Faera herself, as the goddess attempted to learn more about the Voidwalker that had invaded her realm and crippled her Trumpet. As if that wasn’t enough of a treat, he also mused over the fact that he happened to know where Vriko was currently laying low.

With those two nuggets out there, Ozorith was more than willing to leave if Mythal wasn’t willing to listen to reason. After all, as he put it, there was no way that his sister would manage to take that many more lives before he was able to track her down himself. Mythal’s senses came up with nothing -- meaning that there was no hint of deception in his words. Demon lord or not, the Darkness King’s acute ability to pick up on lies had been strengthened to such a point now that he could easily call celestials on their bullshit. But there was nothing. Yet that didn’t mean he was simply going to turn face and start appealing to the Prime Sin. His mouth parted into an amused smirk, even as he chuckled through it. “It always amazes me how you gods and demons of such power can be so fuckin’ stupid,” he remarked, clearly amused. “You think that just by throwin’ out things like that I’m suddenly gonna flip and act all nice and needy? Bub, I ain’t that easy and I sure as hell ain’t gonna buy into your scam just so you can hold anythin’ over my head. Seri went to you in desperation; there weren’t no needin’ or wantin’ your help. She had no other choice -- I understand my fault in that and I’m livin’ with it. But I ain’t about that life and I ain’t so desperate for that woman’s location that I’m gonna make a deal with a shitstain like you that puts me under your thumb. Don’t even pretend like it ain’t gonna go down like that.”

But still, information was important. “I ain’t surprised to hear Faera is askin’ about her -- she did make quite the impact when she was there. But I think I have a good read on you and I think you ain’t gonna give that snotty bitch anythin’. Know why? Serilda is your Sword, your paladin; in your warped li’l mind, she is your property. So why would you offer up information that would put your tool at a disadvantage, therefore puttin’ you at a disadvantage? Yer proud but you ain’t stupid. But ya know what, I’ll level with ya.” He leaned forward in his chair, his hands clasping together over his knees. “I won’t pretend that I ain’t lookin’ for Vriko. And any info I can get, I’ll take. So here’s my deal for ya -- you tell me what you know about her; where she is, what’s she’s doin, the whole nine yards. We’ll consider it pay in advance. You’re tellin’ me you will have need of her soon -- I won’t fight that, even if she will. But she has responsibilities in her job and if you need her for somethin’, then yer takin’ her away from those duties. That puts you in debt to the Rune Knights and, as their actin’ Director, me. But you tell me what you know about Vriko and I’ll consider that debt null and void.”

“That’s the best deal yer gonna get from me. Either take it or shove off.”

Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
Despite what Mythal seemed to want to think of Ozorith, the demon lord didn’t have any intentions of trying to deceive or trick him into any deals or situations. Mythal chuckled, calling him stupid and commenting on Ozorith supposedly trying to lure Mythal into a scam, and the demon simply continued to smirk confidently. He could have made a number of comments reminding him how he’d never tricked or done anything misleading for Serilda. In fact, he’d always been more or less up front with the noblewoman since the day they met, perhaps not giving her all the details she wanted but he’d never hidden his more… nefarious intentions. Ozorith did want Mythal “under his thumb” so to speak, but not in the deceitful manner the man was implying.

He said that he wasn’t surprised to hear that Faera had asked about Serilda, given the woman’s performance in Kingdom Darkness. But, Mythal guessed correctly that Ozorith was hardly going to give the goddess much information as it would put himself at a disadvantage. But it seemed the slayer was willing to at least entertain the demon lord to a certain degree. He admitted he was looking for his sister, and that he was willing to take any information he could get on her, even if it was from him. He understood that eventually Serilda was going to be needed by the demon lord, and doing so would deprive her of being able to complete her duties as a Field Marshal, which would fall back on him as the Director. This, Mythal claimed, would be a debt owed on the demon lord’s part -- a bold suggestion that earned the mortal a raised brow of interest, though not an offended one. If Ozorith gave the information he had about his sister, then he would consider this future debt paid. And if that wasn’t good enough, Ozorith could get lost.

There was a moment of silence as the two men stared one another down before the demon lord finally chuckled to himself a bit merrily. It wasn’t a condescending sound, for once. “I like you,” he said rather honestly, though traces of his inherent arrogance still lingered in his eyes. At this point, it was such a deeply ingrained part of his personality that there was no way of getting fully rid of it. “I have no intentions of trying to trick you ‘under my thumb’ as you put it. I planned on giving you the information I have without cost, because what benefits you benefits Serilda, and thus myself. You are right in that I would not give Faera any information about her, because that would hinder my aims. And while you are not contracted to work for me, you are intimately involved in Serilda’s life and her performance will be greatly enhanced by you staying that way.”

He shrugged. It really was that simple to Ozorith. While he knew that Serilda would turn on him eventually, he did not believe it would be soon and he was more than willing to work with Mythal openly and honestly out of the genuine interest that the director’s behaviors would influence that of his Sword’s. He had no interest in hiding what he was or how selfish his aims were, but he did seem to view helping Mythal as another way to do his part in his connection to Serilda… if in a twisted way.

Ozorith leaned back a little further in the seat, lounging almost a bit lazily. “Vriko has currently holed up in Fiore, in the town of Morgate. She has a small band of dark mages that obey her every command, though my source tells me that the number of her little group used to be much larger than it currently is. Something I’m led to believe you and Serilda had a hand in.” From the light smirk he gave the man, it was clear that Ozorith hadn’t been given very many details on the attack in Vyntermire but nonetheless had put together that it had at least been a trap gone wrong on Vriko’s part. “She and her subordinates have taken up refuge in an old, rundown hall near the center of the city, protected on all sides by the waste and chemicals littering the area. She doesn’t expect to have anyone finding them there any time soon, particularly since the town is all but abandoned and quarantined off from the rest of the country at this point.”

“However, one of my rather loyal believers has managed to work her way into the group and has been traveling with Vriko for a number of months, now. I had one of my underlings reach out to her and she has agreed to meet with you and Serilda in secret at a time and place of your choosing to give you any details she has gathered that will help you find your sister and deal with her and the rest of her crew as you see fit. This would, of course, be in exchange for amnesty on her part.” It was a pretty standard deal, giving freedom to one criminal in exchange for their help in netting a much more dangerous one. The subject was willing and eager to please the Prime Sin of Wrath. She would more than assist the Rune Knights in the endeavor as long as they kept to the agreement of letting her go free once all was said and done.

There was no gaining Mythal’s trust in this circumstance -- there was nothing that Ozorith could do or say to convince him into anything but an aggressive stance against the Prime Sin. He didn’t trust in the demon’s motives and he wasn’t going to change that anytime soon, if ever. As far as the Darkness King was concerned, the smug bastard was just another enemy waiting to show his true face. Just because he was acting all buddy-buddy at the moment didn’t mean his patience would run out. Things as full of themselves as Ozorith was grew impatient when their views, statements and beliefs were constantly tested. It was just a matter of time. So perhaps Mythal wasn’t going to make him break today but the Prime Sin was getting a preview of what every interaction with the God Slayer was going to result in. Complete and utter disrespect. After all, honest evil was still evil.

Mythal’s words on Faera’s attempts were correct, he knew that much. As someone who acted as a leader within the Rune Knights, he understood that sometimes sacrifices had to be made to get results and progression. But that was never worth it if it came to outing someone who was still advantageous. The difference was that Mythal was the kind of person that would refuse deals or implications that put his people in danger, while he was sure if Ozorith viewed Serilda as having become useless, he would have thrown her to the wolves. Still, he recognized that the demon would protect the Voidwalker for the moment, while she was still worthy to his cause.

Did Ozorith have no intention of using Mythal as well? Was the offer of information simply out of the goodness of his heart? Frankly, it didn’t matter to the darkness slayer -- he wasn’t going to roll the dice and come up with snake eyes. So he countered whatever offer was processing in Ozorith’s mind with one of his own, refusing to be at the beck and call of the demon lord. It earned him a chuckle, though it seemed to be one of genuine amusement rather than of haughtiness. OZorith told Mythal that he liked him, which frankly just made his skin bubble uncomfortable. He continued, explaining that he had no intentions of playing any tricks to bring Mythal to his heel. In fact, he claimed he was planning on giving you the information without a price, as whatever benefits that came from it directly helped him, through Serilda. He agreed that he wouldn’t give Faera anything, as doing so would interrupt his own plans. And he had no intention of bringing Mythal into the fold directly -- it seemed his placement in Serilda’s life was exactly what Ozorith needed and wanted.

“You’ll forgive me if I don’t believe ya,” Mythal said quickly, though seeming just as amusedly bored with the Prime Sin’s assurances. But that was all he added before the demon relaxed back on the couch and got into the information he claimed he was providing freely. It seemed that Vriko had traveled quite the distance from her original home in Vintermyr; she was now in Fiore, laying low in Morgate. Well, if she was going to pick anywhere to stay out of sight, that was the place. Morgate Town was less a town and more the remnants of a thriving city, now replaced with metal carcasses and hollowed out structures. A dark guild had bombed it some time ago and after wiping out most of the civilians, they continued to use the place as a means of testing other weapons. Anyone that resided there had to be careful where they tread, as radiation was heavy and fatal in several places. The people known to live there now were no better than brigands and lowlifes.

After the public display at Vintermyr, he couldn’t blame her for taking residence in that radioactive wasteland. As Ozorith put it, it seemed that her former band of bandits had dwindled down to a handful of followers. That wasn’t surprising either -- a fair number of them had been killed after Victoria emerged and the survivors had only just barely escaped thanks to Mythal’s interference. After being rescued, they had taken the bandits into custody and worked on finding the ones that seemed repentant better homes. The wildlings had adapted fairly well to society, last he’d checked, but they definitely understood that they had been sacrificed by their leader to try and test Mythal and Serilda’s abilities. That kind of acclaim had a tendency to get around to other lowlifes.

Ozorith explained, in incredibly great detail, where Vriko had taken up asylum and even the intention of her hiding place. It seemed a bit too convenient for a moment until he explained that one of his loyal followers had managed to infiltrate the group and was now one of Vriko’s subordinates. He had confirmed that the loyalist was ready to meet, at the Rune Knight’s convenience, and provide all the information they required. The only catch was that his informant wanted amnesty. Mythal frowned softly, his eyes pacing slowly back and forth between Ozorith’s own two. He wasn’t going to turn down the free information, though he still doubted it was considered ‘free’ by the general standards.

“Amnesty for anythin’ she’s done while infiltratin’ with Vriko, sure,” Mythal said simply. “But if she’s a wanted criminal for anythin’ else in the past, I ain’t gonna let that slide. We’ll treat her fairly but only as far back as a year. I ain’t about lettin’ people get off scot-free for things they did completely. But I won’t let her bein’ one of your followers change my opinion -- if her info is good and she has a clean record, we’ll deal.” He met the Prime Sin’s gaze evenly. “If ya gotta problem with that, then we’ll talk it over with Seri. If she feels differently, then fine. But that’s my stance.”

Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
Mythal listened to the information that Ozorith had to share without interrupting the demon lord. It was fairly simple. He knew exactly where Vriko was and had a loyal contact that would happily throw the woman under the rug for him, provided that she was taken care of. Mythal thought about it for a moment before agreeing to the terms but only so far back as a year, stating that he could provide amnesty only for things the contact had done during her employ with Vriko and nothing outside of that. Ozorith waved a dismissive hand. “That shouldn’t be an issue,” he told the director. “I’m unaware of the details of her full criminal history, but the term is fair. I’ll have one of my underlings confirm the agreement with her and then they will touch base with you to arrange the meeting.”

That seemed to be the end of that matter. Ozorith knew that his time with the darkness slayer was drawing to a close, as Mythal likely wished for the demon to be out of his home as quickly as possible. He had very little reason to linger for much longer, but he did want to leave with somewhat of a confirmation that the two of them were on the same page for at least one particular issue. Leveling his dark eyes on Mythal, he gave the man a look that was a bit more serious than his expression had been this entire exchange thus far.

“I trust you understand that it is Serilda, rather than yourself, who is Faera’s next target?” Ozorith asked. “I know that you are likely the last mortal on Earthland that needs to be warned on how dangerous she can be, but I feel I must emphasize just how crafty she can truly be. She and I have been… rivals, if you will… for centuries. I was there when she assumed the role of Divine over Kingdom Darkness and witnessed first hand her slow descent into madness. We have waged war against one another more times than I can remember, and I still cannot always predict how she may react in any given situation.”

From the tone of his voice, he wasn’t trying to talk himself up or brag about his history with the goddess. If anything, it sounded like he was only trying to give Mythal some context to how crafty Faera could be, that even he -- who has been warring with her for eons -- was to this day just as easily ensnared in her traps as anyone could be. “I gave her no information on Serilda, but I could see through her facade of composure. Faera is furious with what she views as my intervention in her attempts to secure you, and she will not waste the opportunity to try and shake us both by coming at Serilda hard, and in a way I’m sure neither of us will expect. While I am confident that the two of you can hold your own against most of her forces, the only way we will be able to stay ahead of her is by working together.”

Ozorith held Mythal’s gaze, his look conveying that he knew quite well that the slayer would not like that -- though unlike before, there was no mocking or amusement in his eyes. Faera was a very serious threat, and he was respecting her as such. His expectation was that Mythal held the same respect of her. “If I happen to catch word of any schemes on her part, I will contact one or both of you directly. Or, if I cannot do so myself, I will make sure Ruzatz is notified since he seems to be quite invested in this matter now as well. My hope is that I can trust you to be equally as communicative. I know Faera about as well as anyone can, and can probably tell you things about her that even Ruzatz doesn’t know. Believe of me and my intentions what you will, but when it comes to fighting her I will always be more than happy to provide anything that will put her at a disadvantage.”

If Mythal and Serilda didn’t want to like him, that was fine, but Faera was a threat that needed to be broached from a unified front. The slayer would be able to sense the very real sincerity in the demon’s words, his ability to sense when someone was lying more than enough to confirm the weight of their truth. Likewise, he could probably assume that if Mythal or Serilda ever wanted information on the goddess just for the sake of understanding her better in order to more efficiently plan against her, he would openly oblige such requests.

Well at least Ozorith wasn’t going to fight Mythal on the addendum. Others would have tried to argue against the added stipulation, wanting to protect their underling and chief informant. But it seemed that the Prime Sin had no such interest when it came to his agent, agreeing to the term, though he wasn’t privy to what her prior history was like. He was being ridiculously vague over the details of the woman but that was probably his way of keeping her name a secret while also stringing him along. It was smart -- playing his cards close to the chest. Even Mythal couldn’t fault him for that. So long as they had an accord, there was no reason to put up much resistance against it.

But as far as Mythal was concerned, that was the last bit of discussion they needed to be having. Clearly Ozorith had come here for the sake of trying to ruffle feathers and get the inevitable introduction out of the way. It didn’t make the God Slayer trust him any more nor even begin any seeding of positive emotions in the least. He didn’t trust the Prime Sin to do anything that didn’t actively benefit himself. The only advantage in that was the fact that his goals seemingly aligned with Mythal and Serilda’s, at the moment. The moment that stopped being the case, well… they would have to handle it whatever way they had to. There was no point in denying the fact that this makeshift neutrality was as flexible as a strand of spaghetti over boiling water. So Mythal didn’t really want to spend any more time with Ozorith than he needed to.

But it seemed that hope was a fleeting one. The Prime Sin’s features lost their mirth and pride for a moment, becoming something far more resolute. Was this where the threat came? As the Darkness King set his own gaze to meet the demon’s, he was surprised to hear a sober truth emerge from his lips. He spoke of the importance of understanding that Serilda was Faera’s next obsession, not him. He continued, wanting to ensure that the God Slayer understood just how dangerous it was for the Voidwalker to be in the Divine’s sight. Ozorith had been there when Faera had taken up the mantle of the guardian of Kingdom Darkness and he got to watch as her mind slowly dismantled itself from the realm’s toxic nature. They had been bitter rivals for years beyond comprehension, having fought back and forth more than could be counted and Ozorith even admitted that he wasn’t always capable of predicting the goddess’ next moves.

Mythal was honestly surprised at just how humble the Prime Sin sounded, though he was still cautiously pessimistic at his intentions. The demon explained further that he hadn’t provided intel on Serilda but he had seen firsthand just how angry Faera was at the disrespect that the Voidwalker had shown. Bursting into her realm, dismantling one of her Trumpets and making a fool of her forces was as high an insult as any that could exist within the Divine’s mind. Ozorith believed that Faera would stop at nothing -- and find unique ways to go about it -- to get at Serilda, seeing her destruction as a wound to both the Darkness King and the Prime Sin. The demon believed that the engaged pair could handle her forces themselves but to overcome the obstacles that were certainly heading their way, they would have to work together.

He may as well have punched Mythal right in the stomach. Working together with Ozorith sounded just as appealing as working with Faera herself. Ruzatz, to his credit, had gone out of his way to prove time and time again that he wished for the betterment of the world. Ozorith only wanted to better his own station, make his own realm of control stronger in comparison to others. That kind of power building never boded good news for anyone, especially when it was a demonic force amassing it. Mythal didn’t speak yet, swallowing the bitter taste in his mouth, as Ozorith wrapped up his thoughts. He promised to inform them if he caught wind of any plots that Faera was conjuring up, either doing so directly or letting Ruzatz know and allowing him to translate the news. But it wasn’t necessarily a free gift -- he seemed to expect that the same treatment would be offered in kind, explaining that he was their best resource against the Divine’s schemes based on experience. While he didn’t say anything to clear away any mistrust for his own intentions, he assured Mythal that being a thorn in Faera’s side was far more appealing than his own self-service.

Mythal scoffed, shaking his head lightly. All he wanted to do was tell the demon lord to piss off -- to find his own defense against the goddess, should she come for him. As far as the Darkness King was concerned, the two deific beings going to war was the best possible outcome. Even if one took out the other, that left the remainder weak, frail and ripe for destruction. And it was quite obvious that Mythal wished to be rid of both Faera and Ozorith. But the advantages to having Ozorith’s intel and sources far outweighed his personal gripe, as infuriating as that was to realize. And he wasn’t the kind to go behind his own word and backstab for the sake of taking the high ground. “Alright,” he said simply, resolving himself to the fate of an unlikely alliance with the Prime Sin. “We get word of anythin’, we’ll find a way to let ya know. Last thing we’d want is ya gettin’ your head chopped off by Faera before Serilda gets her chance, after all.”

He glanced over at Susano, still poised in his spot just as he promised. It seemed nothing was going to shake him from being on edge, though Mythal could hardly blame him. “Unless ya got anythin’ else to get off your chest, I’m gonna have to ask you to leave. I already need to start shoppin’ for a new couch.”

Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
As the Prime Sin expected, Mythal looked less than pleased at the prospect of having to team up with Ozorith on anything. Generally, the Lord of Wrath would be quite entertained at such a sight, but right now he was electing to err on the side of unmasked sincerity. Arrogant and prideful though he was, even he knew how and when to convey himself in a manner that even the most staunch of enemies could find a way to come to an understanding with him. As much as Mythal would want to fight otherwise, even he couldn’t argue the value of the insight Ozorith could provide him on the goddess, nor the validity of the demon’s claim to want to keep as many steps ahead of Faera as possible.

The slayer agreed, stating that if they came across anything they would find a way to let him know -- if only so that Faera couldn’t steal Serilda’s chance to kill Ozorith herself. Despite himself, Ozorith’s light smirk returned and he chuckled a little, clearly appreciative of the joke even if both of them knew it wasn’t a joke in the slightest. Mythal glanced over at Susano, who Ozorith had more or less ignored for the duration of his visit. The demi-god held little interest to him, so the Prime Sin had all but forgotten about him. Even now, he deigned to keep his dark gaze on the god slayer rather than the want-to-be deity that had opted to play silent witness to the conversation.

That matter had been the end of everything that currently needed to be said between them, however, so with little else to discuss Mythal requested that Ozorith leave so he could start to look for a new piece of furniture to replace the one that the demon lord had clearly just tainted. “Very well,” he replied somewhat candidly. “It was a pleasure to finally meet you. Do let Serilda know that I will be calling on her soon.” And with that, he disappeared as quickly as he’d arrived, the only trace of him a cold spot in the air that lingered where he’d been sitting and quickly warmed up to the temperature of the rest of the room.

    Darkness.

Pure. Impenetrable. Unending. How long he had been drowning in it, Hugo wasn’t sure. He had only hazy memories of his former life, though occasionally his drowsiness was interrupted by brief and fleeting moments of clarity. Not that he’d had too many of those, lately. He couldn’t even remember the last one, nor how long ago it had taken place. Days? Months? Years? He couldn’t be sure, but he also didn’t really care. His entire world now was simply darkness and apathy. And a rough scratching along his back…

Hugo blinked his eyes open slowly, the distant sensation enough to stir him a bit from his lethargy. He was vaguely aware that he was being dragged somewhere, though that realization didn’t worry him as much as it probably should have. There was next to no light where he was, the only illumination being quite dim and of an eerie hue, the source of which he could not pinpoint. The further he was dragged, the more aware he became. His massively muscular body shifted slightly as he attempted to sit up only to find himself bound quite securely by chains that were wrapped around his arms and torso.

He grunted in annoyance, still not fully up to speed with his mind, tilting his head back to try and get a look at who was pulling him along. Or rather, what. A creature seemingly made of darkness, vaguely humanoid in shape with long ears like tentacles held the other end of the chain that bound him, dragging the large man behind itself. It should have been a terrifying sight, but Hugo wasn’t quite awake enough yet to fully comprehend it. Where was he? The last thing he remembered was… well, what was the last thing he remembered?

Serilda. That’s right. His pathetic excuse of a wife had utilized the services of a witch to summon his spirit temporarily back to Earthland and the mortal realm. She’d finally caught on to the sins of his former life, needing him to confirm their validity, which he did happily. Even after his death she’d continued to nag him incessantly. Thankfully she’d left him alone ever since, but the sight of her running away in tears had been quite fulfilling. He could still see the look on her face now as his words cut her deep and she realized how little she’d meant to him, how little she’d ever mean to anyone.

How long ago had that been? It felt like only minutes, but at the same time it felt like a decade had passed since then. Getting a little more energy to him, he shifted a bit more aggressively in his bindings, though not enough to really hinder the creature that held custody of him. “Hey,” he said, his voice a bit groggy and lacking any semblance of panic that would have been appropriate for the situation. “Hey, where are you taking me?”

There, seemingly, didn’t seem to be anything else to discuss. They had reached the limits of what could pass as meaningful conversation and anything beyond would certainly bring them to a place of standing off against one another. Mythal had exhausted his welcoming attitude, if one could call it that, and now just wanted the Prime Sin to get out. He had a lot to think about and even more to discuss with Serilda once he was rid of the demon lord. Luckily, Ozorith decided to acquiesce to the demand, citing the pleasure he received after finally getting to meet the Darkness King. He also casually mentioned that Mythal should inform the Voidwalker of his reaching out to her soon. “Oh I’m sure she wouldn’t miss it for the world,” he remarked, even as the Prime Sin dissipated into nothingness, leaving them demon-free finally.

Susano was finally able to take a deep breath, as he felt the demonic presence leave. With a flick of his wrist, the blade in his hand zapped back into the ethereal. “I never believed I would encounter such a foul smelling creature in my life,” he said, clearly on the verge of spitting in disgust.

Mythal glanced over at him as he rose to his feet. “Ya know, Ruzatz is a Prime Sin as well, right? Ruler over Lust or whatever.” He walked over to the screen door and slid it open, so that Gren could shove his fluffy face in. The Darkness Slayer gave the mutant Star Wolf a few soft strokes and pest on his muzzle, to calm him down after the stressful situation.

“Yes but Ruzatz is a demon with a kind heart. His generosity and selflessness far outweighs his own selfish goals. The only reason he is not counted among the gods is because of his race.” A moment of thought brought a scoff from Susano’s lips. “Then again, there are gods that are just as cruel as Ozorith. I always seem to forget that your life is so distinctively intertwined with Faera’s animosity.”

“I don’t exactly go around broadcastin’ it,” Mythal explained once Gren had been properly calmed down. A quick, sloppy lick of his hand was the indication that the Star Wolf had returned to a semi-reasonable state, the big tongue lolling out of the hound’s mouth. “Yer a demi-god though -- why didn’t Ozorith seem to notice you at all?”

“We were not born as gods or demons -- we were incorporated into the celestial world, either through force or obligation. As you know, when I defeated the Tower, my gift was becoming a demi-god while also suffering the punishment of being enslaved to the tumultuous structure itself. But in the end, we’re still humans who have simply been blessed with divine abilities. We hold no standing or representation among the other deities that consider themselves superior, such as Ozorith did. I’m almost more insignificant than a human -- especially one that is called the Darkness King.”

Mythal sighed as he walked over to the demi-god. “As stupid as that title sounds, I imagine it ain’t the last time I’ve heard it nor the last time that someone opts to confront or meet me because of whatever fanatical prophecy they’ve heard. All I want is to be rid of Faera and Ozorith and get on with the rest of my life.”

“An honorable hope but I’m afraid it isn’t that easy,” Susano said with a solemn shake of his head. “I hate to be the one that provides the harsh truth but try as you might, you are considered the embodiment of a prophecy. As much as you seem inclined to avoid the responsibility of that, it will be thrust upon you time and time again until you are forced to confront it or it forcibly confronts you.” The demi-god’s face furrowed in thought. “I recall you mentioned an instance within a snowy wasteland. Vintermyr was it?”

    “Yeah, the bandit town.”

“That is where you encountered the revelation that you and Serilda possessed the Seals of the Apocalypse, Lux and Victoria. But you also told me that during your fight with Victoria, something else took over. A presence that, as you put it, took the wheel from you and was in control of the ride right up until the end.”

Mythal nodded. “Yeah. I encountered him in Kingdom Darkness, right before I was able to start usin’ the magic of that place. I thought he was… I dunno, some kind of figment of my imagination or my mind or somethin’.”

“Perhaps once he was. While I don’t claim a vast knowledge of Kingdom Darkness, I do know that there are realms out there that awaken parts of us that we’d rather stay hidden. And if you’ve kept your back turned against a part of your nature for so long, it’s entirely possible that Kingdom Darkness happened to not only rouse it from sleep but give it form. In my country, we believe that every soul possesses a darkness and a light that is constantly interlocked for control, one side giving and taking depending on our actions. It might be possible that you are trapped in that same circumstance, only your soul has been splintered into two separate beings. One that is you, Mythal and the other that is the Darkness King.”

Mythal scoffed. “So what, I’m supposed to just start referrin’ to myself as some kind of fantastical royal and the boogeyman will go away?”

“I doubt it will be that easy. I am sure that your confrontation with this Dark Mythal will come as some kind of test. What that will be is beyond our scope of comprehension. If you are curious, we could always visit with Agatha. Her abilities may shed some light upon the subject.”

“I ain’t one to go lookin’ where I don’t want, Susano. And I’d rather involve less people if I can help it.”

Susano nodded. “I understand. But you must also understand that people are in your life to help if you need it. Don’t cast off your resources when they are still available.”

Mythal snorted. “You sure you ain’t the demi-god of wisdom? You’re throwin’ a whole lot of philosophical crap my way.”

Susano grinned. “I was a wandering nomad back in my day. I picked up plenty of knowledge during my time on Earthland. Now if you excuse me, I believe I’m going to go soak in the spas for a few hours. See if I can’t get this demonic grossness off of me.”

“Yeah…” Mythal said, glancing at the couch. “I think I might just burn this. Or throw it into space. Either way, I don’t think I’m gettin’ much more work done for the moment. I gotta give Seri a call.” After all, there was a lot of new information he had to share with her. Hopefully her day hadn’t been that complicated up to that point…

The time had come to make some viable moves.

Little information had been gleaned from the demonic entity known as Ozorith. His pride and arrogance were far more toxic than that of the Kingdom Darkness realm, keeping him from revealing any true details of Faera’s new enemy. But the goddess wasn’t surprised -- after all, Oz was as much an enemy as he was a friend and no doubt he was far more curious in the end game playing out as slowly and meticulously as possible. It was infuriating but she supposed in his shoes, she may feel the same. Either way, the very name of Serilda Sinclair had provided the Divine with something to build upon. With Shepard having his fingers in so many pies within the mortal realm, it wasn’t hard to discover more about the Voidwalker.

It was even more curious to learn that one of the souls within her realm had once been an important part of her life. A husband, taken before his time, had fallen into the depths of Kingdom Darkness and now existed as one of her shadows. A curious situation -- as only those that were locked out of eternal paradise found themselves here. If this… Hugo was now within her realm, there was some underlying darkness within his soul that he had harbored. Therein lies opportunity.

He was dragged from the wastelands of darkness and given his awareness back. After all, the opportunity that he would be offered had to be accepted within his right mind. Her shadow warrior had chained him up in the shackles of oblivion and pulled him from his place, dragging him along the ground. At some point the man had regained his sanity, long enough to look around and comprehend his surroundings. He didn’t speak right away but once he did, he demanded to know where he was going. The creature provided no answer, not even bothering to look back at him. Its hands gripped the chains tighter as it continued its journey down the path towards the Castle Oblivion.

Soon enough, they had entered the sacred halls. The pristine structure was crafted out of metal as black as the darkness that filled the realm. The smooth surface made for an easier drag on the creature, its pace picking up slightly as it rounded corners and walked through hallways. Soon enough they emerged to the throne room; an elegant hall of mighty pillars sculpted spikes. At the end was a staircase that led up to the throne, cast in a smog so thick that no eyes could pierce through it. A woman stood at the bottom of the staircase, her hair short and pure white. Her eyes were an unearthly gold, shimmering and sparkling with power as she took in the sight of the man. With a jerk, the creature slid Hugo forward to just before her feet before it melted into the ground, merging with the palace.

"Hugo Sinclair,” the woman pronounced his name as she stared down at him. "I am Jihl, the Thirteenth member of the Immortal Thirteen and the Speaker of the Dark Mistress, Faera.” Jihl gestured up towards the throne, where a pair of glowing green eyes sparked to life within the darkness, showing that Faera was, in fact, right there and watching. "You have been taken from the wastelands, where you have been idle and lost, to Castle Oblivion. This is a rare blessing given to any within the realm of Kingdom Darkness -- feel free to bask in the glory of it for a moment.”

And true to her word, Jihl gave him a solid beat to revel before continuing. "It has been discovered that you have a connection to an enemy of our kingdom. One Serilda Sinclair has proven herself as an aggressor against Faera’s domain and has caused several issues for our Dark Mistress’ plans. It is our hope that you’ll be able to provide further information about her, so that we may find a way to act against her. You can provide this information willingly… or I can extract it from  you in far less pleasing circumstances.”

    "The choice is yours.”

Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
There was little surprise that the dark creature didn’t respond to his question, though that didn’t quelch the man’s annoyance over not being answered. “Did you hear me?” he asked. The creature didn’t even turn to look at him. Figures. Recognizing that antagonizing the thing would get him nowhere, he instead started trying to take in his surroundings a little better. For the most part everything was the same, just an endless wasteland of night with an odd dim light that was barely enough for him to see by, but soon they passed off the rough ground onto something man made.

The smooth floor was at least a little easier to deal with being dragged across. His hazel eyes scanned the building, noting the perfect and intricately crafted walls that were structured from a type of metal that was pure black, just like the rest of this land. Their course twisted and turned down various corridors, and before long he was brought to what had to be the final destination. He was fully awake and alert by the time they arrived, though he didn’t say anything. His eyes drank in the obvious throne room, as regal as any one might see on Earthland, though at the top of the dias where the throne would usually be there was only a cloud that he couldn’t see through. In fact, the only one he saw was a woman standing at the base of the stairs, with white hair and golden eyes.

He looked at the woman silently, pausing only to glare at the shadowed creature as it slid him forward to her, growling lightly in annoyance. When the beast sank into the floor and disappeared, his gaze once more returned to her. She called him by name, specifically his married name, causing his eyes to narrow a bit in suspicion. Introducing herself as Jihl, she claimed the title of the thirteenth member of some group known as the Immortal Thirteen, and the voice of some dark entity known as Faera. As if the introduction had been a cue, a flash of green drew his attention up to the enshrouded throne where he saw a pair of eyes watching him intently through the fog.

Hugo observed those eyes for a moment before allowing his attention to return to Jihl, who continued to explain that he had apparently been spending an indefinite amount of time in some wasteland. Castle Oblivion was what she called their current location, informing him that it was a rare honor to have been brought here and even going so far as to state that he was free to take a moment to revel in its supposed glory. Hell, she even paused to give him time to do so. His brows scrunched in an expression of confusion and incredulity. Was this chick for real?

All he did was stare at her like she had two heads, clearly not altogether moved like he should have been. Returning to her words, Jihl finally got to the reason why he had been brought here: His marriage in his former life to Serilda was of note to the woman, or rather to Faera, whom the noblewoman had apparently made quite the enemy out of. His face furrowed further into disbelief as she continued to talk, stating that their interest in him was for the purpose of gathering information on Serilda in the hopes that they could use whatever intelligence he could provide to strategize against her. And, as in most situations like this, there was a hard way and an easy way for them to get what they wanted.

There was a long moment of silence as his gaze flicked back and forth between Jihl and Faera, his expression of bewilderment never lessening in that time. Finally, he said, “I’m sorry… am I… supposed to know who either of you are? Or this… Oblivion place?” Oddly, Hugo wasn’t trying to be disrespectful. A part of him surely wanted to sass these women to hell and back just on principle for the way he’d been dragged along the ground and dumped at their feet, bound in chains like some slave. His confusion greatly outweighed his desire to be snarky at the moment, however, and he was earnestly flummoxed over all the information Jihl had thrown on him like any of it was supposed to mean anything to him.

No matter the response, he would sigh in resignation. “Good to know that wedding vows are made under false pretenses,” Hugo muttered to himself, though not so quietly that the other women wouldn’t hear. “Death was supposed to be when I was finally free of having to deal with that prissy goodie two shoes. Clearly that was a lie.” Even after shedding his mortal coil, Hugo couldn’t be rid of Serilda. First she would talk to him nonstop, interrupting the blissful silence of purgatory with her incessant nagging. Then she’d had him summoned back to the real world to talk to him. Now other people that he didn’t even know were demanding his time, but only because she had gone and done something to make enemies of them, whoever the hell they were.

Whatever. He’d give them what they wanted. The sooner they finished this the sooner he could go back to not having to be reminded of that stick in the mud’s existence. It’s not like he held any love loss for her. “Yeah, she was my wife when I was alive, though I only married her ‘cause I was using her and stealing from her family. She’s pretty enough, but not too bright. Never caught on to what I was doing, happy in her ignorance and the comforts of nobility. Very trusting. Honestly there’s not a lot to tell. The sex was as boring as she was. Was there something specific you were looking for?”

Hugo seemed… quite base, if the truth could be told of such things. There was a lack of awareness, a simplicity to his being that reeked within the halls of the castle. In truth, it was a stench that Faera had long forgotten, as she had not deigned to see anything below her own Trumpets for quite some time. Yet even as he was dragged within the confines of her throne room, she could smell the rank odor of mortality from him. He hadn’t been within her realm for very long so the toxicity hadn’t begun to fester within his soul yet. It was merely skin level, working its way through his flesh to infect his body. But his mortal being was still beneath it.

Yet there was more. Even from where she sat, perched upon her throne, she could smell the memories embedded in him. Corrupted, misaligned moments from his life that showed precisely why he had come to Kingdom Darkness in the first place. No, he hadn't been the most cruel man to live but he had been unfaithful, lying, conniving and filled with selfish purpose. This was a mortal that would tell them everything he could because there was no reason not to but he would certainly expect something to be gained. Even in the underwhelming realization he hadn’t quite piqued to, greed was like a disease and even in the face of those superior to him, he’d want something from it. Normally such arrogance would earn her ire and there was nothing to say it wouldn’t… but a curious thought had piqued itself in her mind. Not yet though -- she was interested in hearing what he had to say.

Jihl went about her duties, introducing herself and Faera as was her task. Upon the moment she allowed the man to understand the weight of the honor upon him, he looked far more dumbfounded than impressed. Certainly that was to be expected -- after all, he probably had no where he was. The only fact he understood was that he was dead. He apologized ahead of time, stating that he had no idea who either of them were or what the significance of where they all were was supposed to mean to him. Jihl cast a look up to Faera, her face neutral but the emotion behind it quite sour. She didn’t understand the purpose of bringing the man here, when a perfectly good session within the Pool would have extracted all the information they wanted.

Ah yes, the Pool. Its mention was saved for only those that knew it existed and that remained to be only the angels and ruler of Kingdom Darkness. The poor souls that had been dragged to the pool were forgotten, lost to miasmic bowl for all eternity. A terribly pungent gathering of the darkness within the realm, the Pool was used as a means of punishing those that had no other purpose but to provide information. One was lowered into the pitch liquid, sat upon their knees in the barely waist-deep miasma. But the heavy concentration of toxic material and the souls that had been torn from their bodies took hold of the imprisoned one, grasping at their ethereal spirit and clawing at it viciously. Memories were quite literally ripped from the mind and sent to float upon the liquid’s surface, ripe to be plucked by the waiting Trumpets. Then the prisoner was left to have their soul harvested by their fallen brethren, until their own agony joined the miasma and awaited the next victim.

But Hugo was no prisoner, yet. Those that were willing to offer information without issue were rewarded with returning to the wastelands, to idly exist until they had been reduced to shadows. The man may not know who she was yet but in time, her regality would seep into his mind and  become the only thing he cared about. Enough of that for now though -- she gave Jihl a soft, unseen nod to continue, offering the man the ultimatum for providing information. The fallen mortal grumbled, seemingly annoyed that his connection with Serilda had followed him even to the afterlife. After a moment of feeling sorry for himself, Hugo spoke up, confirming that Serilda had been his wife during life, though his intent in conjoining was to steal from her family. But rather than deliver information that they could act upon, he seemingly summed up minute, useless details about the woman. She was pretty, not too intelligent, ignorant, trusting and apparently their coitus lacked any excitement. He did inquire to what they were seeking for exactly but it already looked like Jihl had deduced that the man wasn’t going to provide anything wholesome.

"It seems we misinterpreted your importance in her life,” the Thirteenth member remarked idly, closing her eyes softly in what could be perceived as annoyance. "Nevertheless, your memories will provide more information than your words could. It is time you were brought to the Pool.” With a wave of her hand, the shadow creature from before pulled itself free from the ground, forming out the darkness of the castle floor. Its hands wrapped around the chain and began to pull Hugo away as Jihl turned and started to walk into the darkness of the columns.

Then a shift. The air tightened in the entire throne room, as if one’s hands had wrapped around the throat of existence. Jihl and the shadow froze in place and slowly turned to look up at the throne. The green eyes flickered briefly before disappearing into the shadow. "My Dark Mistress…” Jihl started to speak, a slight panic in her tone.

But she was silenced through some means, her head bending down in absolute subservience. The shadow released the chain and melted back into the ground. And the chain around Hugo melted off of him, turning into ashy shadows that fluttered to the floor and dissipated upon connection. A heel clacked from up near the throne before a figure moved out of the fog, elegantly sauntering down each step. Emerging from the darkness was a woman of magnificent beauty, as radiant as she ever was before her corruption. Green eyes, flecked with golden flakes, looked down at Hugo easily, the color amplified by the smoky shadows that clung to the edges of her sclera. Red lips shone against her pale skin, as crimson as freshly spilt blood. Black hair hung about her face and head, racing down and laying gently upon her bare shoulders. She wore a single unitard-like outfit, that tightly hugged her body to accentuate her celestial curves and curved around her neck. Thorns of purple and green were plastered over the black suit, designs that would hold no meaning for any mortal. A green cape trailed behind her, attached at her biceps.

She stepped down onto the ground floor and smoothly walked over to Hugo, smiling down upon him as she came to stand before him. “You seem to misunderstand where you are, my dear,” she said smoothly, her voice melodious and intoxicating -- both in refinement and in peril. “When you died, you were cast here -- to Kingdom Darkness. A purgatory for those that don’t deserve Heaven but aren’t quite suited for Hell. Because of your deeds in life, you’ve been damned to living as nothing. Your eternal afterlife is meant to be spent in a haze, lost in the darkness of unfeeling death. Doomed to hear the words of those who speak to you but unable to truly feel. Already the corruption has begun to set in,” she knelt down in front of him and reached out, gently tracing a finger on her arm. Then he would see the darkness that had embedded itself into his skin, turning his flesh gray and breaking it into splinters. “Truthfully, I don’t care what happens to those that come here, in normal circumstances. As far as I’m concerned, any that are doomed here deserve it. After all, over time you become senseless shadows that only live to serve me and my chorus.”

She smiled wickedly. “But you, young man… I believe letting you waste away or be sacrificed to the Pool would be a great misuse of a resource. You seem willing enough to provide information, even if you don’t quite understand what that means. But is that truly the limits of what you are capable of? Indulge an old goddess and allow me a question. What would you say if I told you I could remake you? That I could take your mortal form and make it divine, give it strength and power you’ve only ever dreamed of? What if I could remove the blinds from your eyes and allow you to move, see, feel better than before? At what cost do you think such gifts should be provided?”

She chuckled. “Serilda Sinclair is an enemy of mine and I seek to destroy her. Not just her physical form but I was her spirit to wither and crumble into ash. You, my dear Hugo, are the key, I believe. But I must know if you are willing to step into a realm you never believed in, never fathomed, and become one of my Trumpets? Shake off your mortal coil and embrace eternity as an archangel. The only price is your willingness to help me crush your former wife.”

    “What say you to that?”

    Seri Banner
Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
Hugo wasn’t necessarily the smartest man in existence, but he wasn’t an idiot either. What he lacked in booksmarts and subtlety, he made up for with street smarts and charm. Granted, he wasn’t being altogether charming at the moment, but the only reason for that was because he wasn’t seeing a reason to be. The large man didn’t know who either of these women were, though the more he woke up the more of a… pressure… he felt coming from the clouded throne. There was certainly a lot he probably could tell them about Serilda, but in order to know what would be most useful to them he needed to know what kind of way they were most interested in attacking her.

Apparently, this Jihl woman didn’t seem to understand the intent behind his efforts. Rather than provide more clarity on the type of information they were hoping for, she wrote him off as useless and decided that he would simply have the memories stripped from him in some place called the Pool. He didn’t know what that was, but it certainly didn’t sound good. Now aggravated by the woman’s haughty attitude, he fixed a glare at her even as the shadow creature came back to take him away. “Now listen here, bitch. You’re the one who dragged me all the way out here to ask me vague questions. Don’t get mad at me for the vague answers you get in return.”

He wasn’t yelling at her or over the top with anger, but he wasn’t going to just sit back and be treated like a piece of broken furniture just because they had him tied up and at the disadvantage. Especially when he was already dead and therefore didn’t exactly have much left to lose. He’d shown a willingness to work with them and give them what they wanted, and her response was to act like he’d told her to get lost. What a piece of work.

But even as Jihl turned to walk away and Hugo finally started fighting his bindings in earnest, at least trying not to go down without a fight, something in the air changed. A chill went down his spine and a sensation of dread and paranoia the likes of which he’d never felt before washed over him, leaving him paralyzed in his chains. He looked around with wide eyes, doing his best to keep the panic under control though his heart was racing so hard he could feel it in his throat. At first, he thought he was being punished for sassing the woman and being non-compliant, despite the fact that he had been trying to be compliant.

But as both Jihl and the shadow stopped in their steps as well, turning to look up at the throne, he realized that might not be the case. Jihl sounded as alarmed as he felt as the green eyes of the Dark Mistress disappeared from view behind the fog, her protests of concern cut off by some unseen manner. There was a light clattering as the shadow released his chains and sank back into the floor, and then only a moment later the chains around him dissolved into ether and joined the creature in the shadows. Confused and wary, Hugo remained seated on the ground and nervously rubbed the soreness from his arms as he watched the scene before him.

Faera stepped out from the dark cloud that had been hiding her before, a woman that was both beautiful and terrifying to behold. Hugo found himself unable to look away from her, though not entirely from the dread he felt at her presence. She descended the dias with an unearthly grace, making her way directly toward him. With a pleasant smile, she voiced her belief that Hugo didn’t seem to understand where he was, which was true. He’d said as much only moments ago. She explained, saying that this place, Kingdom Darkness, served as a purgatory for those whose souls were too much in balance to be slated for heaven or hell, and that it was his deeds in life that had punished him to an afterlife of what essentially amounted to non-existence.

He listened in silence, despite the questions he had. Hugo knew nothing of this Faera woman, but he wasn’t so ignorant as to think interrupting or disrespecting her in any fashion wouldn’t come back to haunt him. He recognized a boss when he saw one, even though it had been a long time since someone had been in charge over his freedoms. She informed him that usually the fate of those who had been sent here after death didn’t concern her, as they had more than earned their doom by the way they’d handled themselves in life. But Hugo was different, or so she seemed to be suggesting. He was a resource of some value that would be wasted by being delivered to the Pool, particularly when he seemed open to giving them what they wanted and just needed more understanding to provide that. In fact, she seemed to think he had potential.

She knelt before him, running her fingers down his arm and drawing attention to his flesh, once quite tan and now starting to turn a sickly gray. Given Hugo’s attraction to assertive and commanding women, it got a small rise out of him as he was equal parts frightened and aroused. Requesting that he humor her in answering a question, Faera requested his thoughts on how he would feel about the opportunity to be reborn in a divine form that came with power and influence the likes of which he’d probably never thought he’d be able to have. She claimed to be able to remove the ignorance of his mind, to evolve him into something greater than he could ever be as a mortal.

It was an enticing gift that she was dangling in front of him, that much he couldn’t deny. The selfishness in him was quite captivated by the idea, already turning it around in his mind and examining it for its potential. As he did that, Faera explained that what she sought was Serilda’s destruction, but not just her body. She wanted to tear apart the woman’s spirit, wanted to make her suffer long and hard before allowing her to perish in agony, and Faera believed the key to making that happen was Hugo himself. However, she needed to know if Hugo was interested in helping to make that happen by assuming himself into a position as one of her Trumpets, letting go of his mortal life to become an immortal archangel, all for the low price of destroying the woman that had once been his wife.

The man’s eyes were quite wide at this point as he truly never had considered such heights of power for himself. In life, Hugo had not been a mage. He’d used some magical equipment in his line of work, of course -- both his legitimate job and his criminal one -- but he’d never become adept enough with any one type of magic to consider himself a wizard. He’d just been a man with a conniving mind and a drive to get what he wanted, no matter the means. Magic had been helpful in that journey, but had never been a necessity. What she was offering him, though… it was damn near unfathomable. Only a fool would reject it.

But despite what others might think, Hugo wasn’t the type of man to jump at the promise of power without looking both ways first. Not only was that foolhardy and a way to get himself trapped into a worse situation than he was already in, but it also never looked good to a potential new employer to be so easily manipulated. After a moment of silent consideration, he said, “I won’t lie, ma’am, that’s a seriously tempting offer. Never thought I’d get a shot at something as fantastical as eternal life and divinity, let alone with the aim of knocking that uppity prig off her high horse. Hell, I’d probably have helped you with that anyway, even without the kind of… gifts… you’re offering me. Sounds like a reward in and of itself. I know that woman better than she knows herself, elsewise I wouldn’t have been able to turn her in circles all those years and keep her off my scent. So if you want to know all her secrets and the things that make her tick and crumble to pieces, then yeah… I’m the guy you want.”

He paused there for a moment, somehow finding the strength to look her in the eyes despite the panic her aura and demeanor continued to instill in her. There seemed to be a ‘but’ coming, though perhaps not in a manner she might have expected. Maybe in another situation with another person he might have tried to tack on more benefits for the sake of his self interest, but it was kind of hard to top what she was already offering him and even a conman like him knew where the line was and when not to cross it. No, his concerns were of a different, wiser matter. “I guess I’d just like to know what the catch is, if any. What you’re serving is a platter of gold, and I can see that… and I’m more than willing to accept. But I’m not so greedy as to take it without understanding everything that comes with it first. I like to know what I’m getting into, and what would be expected of me. I enjoy delivering surprises but ain’t much a fan of getting them. Being turned into some… mindless shadow beast or glorified slave, for instance… can’t say that’s worth the cost of divinity.”

“But if you’re just lookin’ for a reliable servant that will use what you’re offering and take some initiative to get shit done, do some dirty work… yeah, I reckon I can scrounge up more than a little loyalty to you and your goals. Especially for the added pleasure of getting the chance to ruin Seri’s life even more than I already have.” Despite everything, Hugo found it in himself to smirk up at the goddess, betraying the truth of how much he would sincerely enjoy being a thorn in the woman’s side. And there was something dark in the look too, a flash of sadism that spoke to how much he had already manipulated and abused the woman in the past.

Despite having been mortal herself not that long ago, it seemed Jihl had little patience for Hugo -- ready to cast him aside without a second thought. And indeed, he had been willing to be forthcoming with further details, having only scratched upon the surface of what he knew. But the Thirteenth ignored it, even going as far as to utterly ignore the man as he snapped back at her. Perhaps it was in that confidence, in spite of his situation, that Faera had seen a spark of possibility for something more than just information. So rather than simply let her emissary handle the matter, as she did with most things, the Absolute Divine made the conscious choice to approach the former mortal herself. Her coming to that conclusion was what made the air shift, what frozen the very atoms within the confines of Castle Oblivion and beyond. Indeed, all of Kingdom Darkness may have come to a stop as its ruler, its Dark Mistress, had decided to stand up from her throne and step down to speak of her own volition.

And rather than address him like a superior, insulting him and demanding respect, she spoke kindly and carefully to him. There was little doubt who was in charge and she made no attempt to sway him from understanding what kind of powerbase she had. But Jihl had approached him from a place of superiority and vagueness, expecting much without providing anything in return. A poor effort but then again, Jihl was still truly learning her place. She was the newest of the Immortal Thirteen after all, having only been conscripted at Archimedes’ insistence. But she had proven noble and faithful, even going as far as to scrutinize the former archangel that had lifted her so high. Yet Jihl demanded respect without allowing those she targeted to understand why they should be paying such attention.

But Hugo was a different pawn in the game. He wasn’t merely a speck of useless possibility, to be sapped and discarded so callously. No, what had made Faera’s rule so impactful over the years was how deeply she observed the possibilities each and every creature that came before her offered. True, most mortals were reduced into literal shadows of their former selves and mindlessly followed her orders but that was the impact of the realm. It was Kingdom Darkness that rusted away the soul and left emptiness in its wake. Though she didn’t go out of her way to seek out mortals and offer them gifts, she was always watching when ones were brought before her. The last had been the man responsible for her invasion’s end, the so-called adoptive father of her vessel. Even he had been spared the Pool, as torturing him for the rest of eternity and letting him experience it fully was far more tantalizing.

Yet he was still trapped and not important at the moment. The former husband of Serilda Sinclair sat before her, looking as stunned with her aura of power as he was with her looks. That wasn’t surprising after all -- she was considered the most beauteous of all the gods and goddesses. Despite her assignment to rule over Kingdom Darkness, she was still the Goddess of Love. And for a base creature, he wasn’t unattractive to the eyes. Were it not for the stink of mortality, he may have been quite handsome. But then again, were her to accept her offer, that would hardly be an issue, would it? The thought was already at the precipice of her mind as she spoke to him, clarifying the misunderstanding he so sorely was caught up in. And she spoke to him frankly, informing him of just how important she felt he could be, should he be willing to step into the right spot. She could make him more than he was, as a being that had already passed into the afterlife, his soul was as malleable as fresh clay. And Faera possessed the means and ability to change what was once mortal and make it celestial.

But the price was his willingness to destroy the woman he had once been married to. True, he viewed her as a means to an end but there was no guarantee that his ire went any deeper. She made it very clear that Serilda’s death was the outcome the Divine sought, though not before tearing everything down she cared about and reducing her to waste. Just how deep did this man’s corruption go? The offer was placed before him, his eyes wide bowls that stared at the extended meal with hunger and desire. She wondered if his hunger was too ravenous, forcing him to agree hastily without even considering all the possibilities. While it wouldn’t have changed her goal in any way, she would be inclined to believe he was no more intelligent than Ruman, who was but a willing soldier. Archimedes, to his credit, was crafty and wicked, seeing all angles and acting at what seemed the best outcome. His problem was he didn’t stop to consider the danger of his paths until it was too late.

He considered for a long moment, which seemed satisfactory for Faera. After all, the afterlife wasn’t in a hurry to go anywhere so why should she be? She fixed him with a silent but smiled gaze as he pondered the possibilities, only speaking up when he was confident to do so. He admitted that it was a proposal that floored him. He’d never envisioned a scenario where he would be lifted above his place as well as getting a chance to bring Serilda down in a truly carnivorous way. He even went as far as to say that he would have provided them information free of charge, if only to get back at the Voidwalker. He explained that he knew Serilda better than she truly understood herself, having studied her enough to work his way around her. He was more than willing to put forth everything he knew to help her campaign.

There was a catch though, it seemed. Faera heard no agreement to her gifts, simply an observation of its magnificence and the profitable opportunity before him. He raised his gaze to meet hers, finding a courage many were lacking to stare back into the emerald void of her eyes. Swallowing his fear, he asked what the catch to the offer was -- what payment needed to be made if he were to agree to be transformed. He understood the weight of what she was putting forth but he also knew that such gifts rarely came without a cost. He had no desire to become a shadow creature or a slave to her whims, seeing no profit in immortality for a lifetime of abusive enslavement. He remarked that if she was looking for someone who would take her gifts and use them to their full abilities, take all she offered and manipulate the living world to her benefit, her figured he could swear fealty to her. There was always the cherry of becoming the knife in Serilda’s side.

Faera chuckled softly, amused at his words and assumptions. But not in a way that was belittling -- if anything, he would get the feeling that she was impressed with his thinking. A single hand rose from her side, offering itself down to him. Should he take it, she would gently rise to her feet along with him. “Were you to turn down my offer, a glorified slave as well as a monster of the shadows is precisely what you would become,” she told him frankly, if no less gently. “That is not my influence -- that is the power of Kingdom Darkness. But, I understand why you are cautious about my offer. You were clearly a smart man when you were living and that intelligence has stayed with you even here. My former Trumpet, the one you will be replacing, was a bit of a trickster, who sought to tantalize and tease and poke the slumbering beast. He believed his strength to be so superior to everything mortal that he never once considered to be wary. It was ultimately what brought about his downfall at the hands of your former beau. He underestimated her and he paid a high price for it. You, my dear man, are far more forward I believe. Adding in the fact that you also have a history with Serilda and I believe you will bring about her demise.”

“I have no need for more shadows for my army -- Kingdom Darkness has been acquiring souls since the beginning of everything and as such, has provided me with a force unlike any other. I need angels and archangels that are willing to think outside their predestined boundaries. I need leaders and I believe you are well suited for the role. There is but only one catch -- my goal is to open Kingdom Darkness to the world of the living and invade it. I shall take the world of light and submerge it in the darkness, expanding my influence and my power and thus, those of my followers as well. It is not just Serilda I seek to destroy but everything within that realm. So that is the price you must pay; you must be willing to help me take over the realm of light to expand my empire. Anyone you’ve ever cared for will join my endless supply of souls for all eternity.”

She carefully observed him as she let that sink in, her smile still as soft and contained as it had been from the beginning. “And as my Trumpet, you shall rule right under me. And perhaps, if you prove your worth, I may consider something further for you.” Her smirk betrayed something carnal about her intentions. “What say you, Hugo?”

Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
He felt his request for clarity and honesty was fair enough, and from the agreeable chuckle that Faera gave it was clear that the goddess felt the same. Divinty and eternal life was all well and good in his mind, but if it came at the cost of losing himself, then the riches on the offered platter would prove itself to be fool’s gold. All the treasure in the world was useless if he couldn’t actually be himself to enjoy them. Much to his dismay, Faera informed him that becoming a mindless shadow was certain to be in his future should he refuse her offer, though the way she said it did not lead him to believe it was a threat or attempt of coersion of any kind. Indeed, she followed up the statement to confirm that it wasn’t really something in her control, that such was simply the fate of all souls that found their way to this place after death.

As he cautiously accepted Faera’s assistance in standing to his feet, Hugo thought about the shadow creature earlier that had dragged him all this way. Had that thing been a person, once? He didn’t really have time to put much thought into it. The goddess affirmed his desire to want to know exactly what he was getting into, complimenting his intelligence and wisdom in questioning the strings that came along with the gifts rather than simply taking them at face value. Pretty words, and certainly ones that weren’t unappreciated by the mortal, but not enough to cure him of his wariness just yet.

According to Faera, her former Trumpet -- whose position Hugo would be replacing -- was a rather cunning individual that enjoyed playing with his food, with arrogance enough that he wasn’t very cautious about how he approached his duties. And apparently, Serilda herself had used that ego to her advantage and managed to slay the man. Or at the very least render him harmless. The former Trumpet’s fate was rather vague, but whatever Serilda had done to him it had been enough to end his threat. Hugo frowned thoughtfully at the words, his mind turning. He remembered Serilda being fairly decent as a warrior. She’d been trained by a rather strict Rune Knight and certainly had a talent for combat, that much was true. But his former wife had never been a mage that he could recall, and surely she’d never been so powerful as to go toe to toe with an archangel and be the one victorious.

The goddess informed him that she had no need of shadow drones, as her army consisted of an unfathomable number of them from all the souls that had been rotting here for what had to be eons uncounted. What she needed was agents of sound and whole mind that she could trust to do her bidding and apply their own intelligence and talents toward furthering those goals, presumably without the need for constant supervision or micromanagement. In her own words, she needed leaders, something she felt he was. She wasn’t wrong. Hugo had been in charge of most of his Earthly operations, successfully running a large crew of unsavory criminals stealing rather large fortunes worth of resources for personal gain.

Thus, they were down to the catch: her end game. Faera’s aim was to fully invade the mortal realm and open it up to the corruption of Kingdom Darkness, stripping it of its light and essentially expanding her rule beyond what she currently had. Destroying Serilda was one of the many steps that needed to be taken along the way toward that achievement, particularly as the staunch noblewoman was clearly making it a point to be in the woman’s way. A question came to mind, but Hugo tucked it away for now, patiently waiting for Faera to finish answering his last one. Ultimately, it would be the mortal realm -- and all who dwelt within it -- that would succumb to the power of Kingdom Darkness. There would be no survivors, including those left on Earthland for whom he might still care for and have a connection to. And the price was that he would need to play an active hand in assuring her desires came to pass. In exchange, Hugo would rule under her, answer only to her, and possibly achieve a more elevated status of some kind depending on how well he performed.

For a moment his mind had been briefly on his woman back in the living world, the one he’d been with for years even before courting and eventually marrying Serilda. He liked the woman, loved her even, but theirs had still been a shallow relationship based around mutual greed and lust. However, the rather hungry smirk that Faera gave him on that last statement, and the somewhat heated look in her emerald eyes, wiped all traces of the other woman from his mind. After all, if she had been in his shoes, she would have already thrown him under the bus for a chance like this, and he had no qualms about doing the same. He rather boldly allowed himself a slow glance over the goddess, taking a moment to truly appreciate just how attractive she was. Maybe he’d catch hell for it and maybe he wouldn’t, but so far not hiding his thoughts seemed to be working well for him. There was still a mantle of dread cloaking his body, but that did nothing to stop the small and receptive smirk that worked its way on to his own lips. Yes, he could definitely get behind the possibility of what she was suggesting on that front.

He did not have to think for much longer after that. Faera had laid everything out for him as bare as a newborn babe, and the listed cons of the position were fleeting concerns to him at best. Slight smirk still on his face, he returned his gaze to hers and bowed his head respectfully. “Just show me where to sign, mistress.”

Faera had no intention of playing the man, giving him the honest truth right from the beginning. There was no purpose in deceiving him -- the truth was far scarier than any fabrication she could dream up anyways. He had no desire to become one of her shadows but should he resist or turn down her offer, he would become one anyways. And if he were to cause any issue with that, then he would suffer the far worse fate of the Pool. But the Divine could see intelligence in this man’s eyes, a conniving mind that would do what it could to survive and, arguably more importantly, thrive. He wished to know what the catch was for the offer and she told him; she intended to destroy all of the realm he had once called home. It would be broken down and absorbed into her dark dominion, another wasteland for her to rule over selfishly. There was one major missing piece to the puzzle; the ‘why’ of her goal, of course. But even if he had pushed to know about that, he’d come up empty. Her reasons were her own and not even her closest subjects knew.

Her offer was clear and concise and promised more than even others had reserved. There was no doubt that her added hint to what his future may behold was something far superior than what even Archimedes had managed to accomplish. The lusty man picked up on it and allowed himself a moment to take in the outer beauty that Faera possessed. Ever a man of course, but she wouldn’t deny that it felt good to be wanted once more. Her subjects were too busy worshipping her to see her beyond goddess, forgetting that she was still a woman and an arrogant one at that. No matter; she allowed him his opportunity to admire her form, her smile as even and warm as it had been throughout. He still felt the power of her aura but he garnered up the courage to give her a smirk, eager to see what their relationship could become. Well no one could doubt that he was, at the very least, receptive.

He bowed his head, presenting himself as a willing subject for her cause. Her smile finally widened a bit, still genuine in its pleasure. “Excellent. I am quite pleased to hear your agreement,” she said, grinning from ear to ear. She turned slowly to look at Jihl, who still wore a face of neutral indifference. But below the facade, Faera could tell the woman was shocked. Whatever remained of her free will still swam beneath the surface and she hadn’t expected such a lofty gift to be offered… perhaps ever. In truth, there was probably quite a bit of jealousy. To be one of the Immortal Thirteen was an honor that could only be given to those still living as mortals. The transformation to an archangel required the soul to be free of the flesh but there wasn’t ever a need to mention such rituals as Faera had her Trumpets filled out. Perhaps the Thirteen had expected that one of them would step in to fill the spot.

Adorable truly but they had their purpose. Removing one of them would create an opening the Divine wasn’t willing to depart with. Bringing another party in was a far easier task, especially one as amenable as Hugo had been thus far. “Jihl, fetch the other Thirteen and gather in the Cauldron. I believe your brothers and sisters should bear witness to the birth of a new Trumpet.”

"At once, my Dark Mistress,” the Thirteenth responded, bowing her head and heading back down the hallway she had intended to leave through before.

Faera turned back to Hugo. “Excuse her words -- Jihl acts as a commissary between me and those that seek to communicate with me. Rarely do I go out of my way to discuss anything with anyone directly, unless I have explicit reason to do so. You’re only the second person to hear my natural voice in recent memory and you are far more attractive than the last.” Ozorith was a handsome man, there was little doubting that. But his beauty was only skin deep -- the demonic impurity beneath and his arrogance and pride soured what could have been an exquisite painting. She stepped up to him and turned, sliding her arm through his and linking their limbs. “There is much to discuss beforehand and then quite a substantial amount to talk about after your change. Luckily, once you are directly connected to this realm and my power, the knowledge I permit you to have will be yours immediately.”

She led him around the stairs leading up to the throne and down a narrow passageway, heading deeper into the depths of Castle Oblivion. “One of my Trumpets, your soon-to-be comrade Sheperd, is currently undercover in the mortal realm. Ruman and Izrael have recently been sent there as well with the task of discovering just how strong your former bride and her soon to be husband are.” She imagined that would come as a bit of a surprise. “It seems in your death, a lot of facts and events have taken place that have gone beyond the scope of your understanding. Sheperd has managed to find a lot of details in his search of her past, which is how we happened upon you. It seems her magic manifested after your death and she’s grown quite strong in it. Not only that but she has allied herself with two demon lords, two Prime Sins. Ruzatz, the Sin of Lust and Ozorith, the Sin of Pride. Its through this connection that she has gained even more magical strength, enough so that she was able to destroy the former Trumpet’s divinity. Quite a feat for a mortal.”

She turned down another passage as she continued. “Her husband-to-be is a vessel known as Mythal Ragnos. His creation was concocted by me, as a connection between the realm of light and Kingdom Darkness, granting me the perfect body to inhabit and cross over into. You see Kingdom Darkness, for all it’s glory, is not easily accessed nor is it easy to cross back into the other plane -- or any other plane, truly. It requires enchanted items of great magical power and even then, they only are viable for a short time. But I am connected to Kingdom Darkness and thus, I cannot go anywhere that is not ripe in its air. Hence my creation of Mythal. Unfortunately, he was taken from me and my attempts to bring him back into the fold have all failed.”

“I was too hasty, you see. I came at him too aggressively and in my own arrogance, I was beaten. I’ve been forced to realize and learn that my powers, for all their strength, are not infallible. Thus I’ve begun to plan for a more… long term victory. But for that, I not only need a new Trumpet… I need you, Hugo.” She smiled at him, drawing her fingers along his arm. Even as she did so, the taint from the realm faded momentarily, restoring his flesh to its former glory. “The process to transform your soul to that of an archangel will be painful, that much I can assure you. But so long as you can take the pain, you will find yourself with power never dreamed of before.” They came around another bend, which came to an abrupt end only yards away. An open chamber lay beyond, dimly lit with purple light. She paused before entering, turning to meet his gaze. “Are you prepared for what awaits you on the other side?”

Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
There really was little reason for Hugo to try and press more information out of Faera besides what things might affect him in the light of his making this decision. Perhaps others would have wanted to know why Faera wanted to destroy the mortal realm, out of some need to affirm whether or not they could stand by the goddess’ side in her desires, but Hugo was not such a man. The plain truth was that he simply didn’t care what her reasons were for wanting to do it. Why should he? He was already dead, and those who remained among the living that he knew weren’t so dear to him that he would throw away a chance at immortality and power in what would inevitably prove to be a futile attempt to protect them. Plus, while he hadn’t exactly been the most religious of men in life, even he knew better than to pry for personal details from a god.

So, he accepted. If the only cost was to screw over the rest of those remaining still alive on Earthland, well that was a bargain deal as far as he was concerned. His decision clearly pleased Faera greatly as she smiled wide at him and expressed her gladness. The goddess turned back to Jilh, who looked unfazed by the moment but Hugo would eat his shadowy rags if the woman wasn’t seething on the inside. While Hugo greatly wanted to shoot the white haired bitch a smug look, he refrained… for now. Better to wait until after all was said and done before acting too cocky about it. Faera instructed Jihl to bring the remaining members of the Immortal Thirteen, and the woman bowed her head in subservience before leaving to complete the task.

As soon as the woman was gone, Faera returned her attention to Hugo and apologized for her emissary’s behaviors. It seemed that Jihl was typically the one who spoke to others on behalf of herself, as Faera almost never communicated directly to anyone without a very specific reason. In fact, it seemed that he was only the second person in what Hugo could only assume was the last few centuries at least that had been graced with the pleasure of hearing Faera’s natural voice, and apparently he was more appealing on the eyes than the other person had been. Hugo certainly recognized the admittance for the honor it was meant to be and didn’t hesitate to acknowledge it with another gratefully bowed head, even smiling from her compliment. “Well in that case, I’ll be sure to enjoy every minute of your dulcet tongue as you allow me.”

He said it with a surprising air of professionalism, but there was a hint of bold flirtation in the comment given the rather obvious double entendre. When Faera stepped forward and moved to link her arm in his, Hugo easily slipped into a courtly mannerism, holding his arm out for her while his other came to rest at the small of his back. He held himself tall and walked gracefully beside her at the pace she set, holding an air of confidence so smooth that one might not even stop to realize that he was in tattered clothing barely suitable for a beggar on the streets. Years of courting and subsequently marrying Serilda had taught him more than enough about the proper way to treat a lady -- or in this case, a goddess.

There was much to discuss, she told him, but the vast majority of that knowledge would be immediately implanted into his mind upon receiving her power. There were at least a few things Faera felt it appropriate to inform him of for now though, and Hugo listened raptly to what she had to say. There were three other Trumpets in her employ, one named Sheperd who was presently hiding himself in the mortal realm somewhere, and two more by the names of Ruman and Izrael that were recently sent there with the more open purpose of getting a read on just how far Serilda’s powers extended.

As well as that of her soon to be husband.

Hugo turned with controlled, but open, shock at the words, his brows furrowing together in surprise. Serilda was getting remarried? Whose interest could that dull woman have possibly caught? Probably just someone else who wanted her money. Then again, now that his mind was clearing up and memories were starting to return in greater clarity, he recalled the look on her face when she’d had his ghost summoned. He’d informed her quite cruelly that no one would ever be truly interested in a woman as prudish and lacking in personality as her, and his words had struck an even greater nerve than he’d hoped it to. He’d never gotten the chance to confirm it since she’d run out of the room crying like a child, but for the brief moments he’d had his wits about him he’d suspected that perhaps she’d been in a relationship of some kind at the time and it hadn’t been going well. There was a story there, and he was interested to know it.

But first, there were more important things at hand. As Faera herself told him, a lot had happened during the time that he’d been drifting into mindlessness in the wastes of Kingdom Darkness, all of which he would need to be filled in on. It was apparently Sheperd that had unearthed Hugo’s relationship to Serilda, as well as what they currently knew about the noblewoman’s magic, which had supposedly revealed itself sometime after Hugo had died. He wasn’t sure how long ago that was, but it couldn’t have been too long. Despite the short time, however, she had managed to become quite powerful, and not just with her magic. Apparently, Serilda had also managed to gain some rather powerful connections with two demons of all things, Prime Lords that associated themselves with the sins of Lust and Pride.

Hugo’s eyes narrowed in an expression vaguely reminiscent of disbelief. Not that he thought Faera was lying to him, of course. He was quite certain she was telling the truth. Simply, the truth was so wildly outside of the Serilda he knew that if the information had come from any other source he probably would have dismissed it as a fabrication. But apparently, she had used those allies to gain enough power to single handedly destroy the former Trumpet whose position Hugo would be assuming, not just killing him but actually stripping his divinity. Even for someone as out of the know with religion as himself, Hugo knew without needing an explanation that such a feat was so far removed from what any mortal was capable of that it should have been near impossible. But if that were the case, Hugo wouldn’t be here now.

“Interesting,” he murmured, ruminating the revelation in his mind. “Serilda is terrified of demons. Terrified of a lot of supernatural things, really. Demons, gods, dragons, ghosts… Really, anything that boasts powers greatly beyond the scope of her control. She’s not necessarily the type of woman that needs to be in control at all times, I’ll give her that… but she definitely is scared of anything that wields strength outside of what most humans can fathom. Or at least, she was. But she also wasn’t a mage when I was alive, so it’s entirely possible she finally moved past all that.”

Faera moved the topic along. The man Serilda was intended to marry went by the name of Mythal Ragnos, though Faera referred to him as a “vessel”. The man had only been born by her own machinations, intending him to be a link between Kingdom Darkness and the mortal world that she could use to travel between both realms. Despite being the mistress of Kingdom Darkness, it was not as easy as he might have otherwise assumed for her -- or anyone -- to come and go as she pleased. In fact, she herself was unable to leave at all, bound to the realm through whatever forces placed her in charge of it. Meanwhile, her servants were required to use powerfully enchanted items that only worked for limited amounts of time. Thus, she’d created Mythal to use as a means of transportation between the worlds to do as she pleased.

However, before she could enact on her plans, Mythal had been taken from her. So far, she had made several tries in luring him back into her control but had as of yet been unable to succeed. Faera credited this to her own haste and misplanning, explaining that she had assumed herself infallible in her aims and because of that paid the price of failure. Now, she had her eyes set on a victory that would come at a slow, steady burn, but to do that required Hugo filling the currently vacant role of her final Trumpet. His skin raised in goosebumps as she ran the tips of her fingers down his arm, drawing out a bit of the natural color he’d had in life. The sensation heightened the dread of her aura tenfold, but so too did it riddle him with a powerful arousal that refused to be fully drowned out by his fear. Hugo had a thing for powerful and dangerous women, and while many that he’d known on Earthland had fit that kind of bill, they all paled in comparison to the deadly goddess that currently hung on his limb.

The process of turning him into an archangel would be painful, she told him. Hugo had no doubts of that, but she reassured him that the end result would be far worth the temporary agony. “Few blessings of worth come without a suitably proportionate cost. Can’t say I’m looking forward to it, but I ain’t gonna shy away from it neither. Not when the reward is to spend an eternity in the company of a woman as rapturous as yourself.” Even shackled by the low hum of simmering panic in her presence as he was, Hugo still found it within himself to be charming.

She inquired if he was prepared for the task ahead. “Probably not,” he admitted honestly, giving her a slightly nervous smirk. All the bravado in the world couldn’t compensate for a mortal man attempting to fathom the intimidating depths of immortality that laid before him, and there was no sense in hiding that from her. He assumed she’d be able to see through such lies anyway, being a goddess and all. “But I’m as prepared as I could ever be, and waiting ain’t gonna make it any easier. I ain’t much for procrastinating anyway. A man knows when to suck it up and get the job done, so I will follow where you lead, my lady.”

There was a lot of information that Faera felt needed to be shared before she began the process of Hugo’s transformation. It wasn’t necessarily going to affect the change itself nor her plans but simple, interesting details that she was sure that the man had no clue about. He seemed to have this idea of what Serilda was because that’s what she had been when he had known her and been married to her. The Divine firmly believed that the former husband would be quite surprised to discover that his wife was vastly different from the woman he had been connected to. Plus it would make for a good conversation while they strolled through the castle towards the Cauldron, giving them some free time before they reached the large room. So they touched upon Serilda first, the goddess easily translating the weight of the Voidwalker’s power to Hugo to understand.

Hugo was surprised, almost unwilling to believe the words. It was more of a shock than him being suspect of her lying though; as if the news was so beyond the scope of what he perceived Serilda was capable of. He admitted that, as far as he knew, Serilda was terrified of demons or rather, all things supernatural. Apparently the Voidwalker carried a fear of creatures that could carry power beyond that of a mortal person. It wasn’t out of any desire to be the absolute pinnacle of strength, nothing so selfish; it was merely her being scared of beings that could shape the world as easily as snapping a finger. To a point, Faera could see why such a base creature would fear the more powerful; after all, an ant was always at risk and in terror of a boot coming down upon them and snuffing them out without barely a thought.

“I highly doubt that,” Faera said, chuckling over the idea that Serilda had defeated her fears. “Though she was an invader in my realm, that left her emotions open wide for me to feel them all the way here. There was a great deal of fear in her… but it was overshadowed by her willpower. That is the only respect I can give mortal creatures -- the drive to rise past your limits is so constant that you will push yourselves through any challenge if given the right context. It seemed she had just that, as Mythal was within Kingdom Darkness and certainly trapped and doomed to fail. She had little choice but to come here and face whatever awaited her. Your former beau is my enemy, Hugo, but that is not to say I do not respect her strength. And no doubt she and Mythal have been getting stronger in preparation for my next act.” But her desire was to push past their expectations and hit them from so many angles, they weren’t prepared for her end game.

Soon enough they were at the entryway and she paused there, to give him a moment of consideration. Though she felt little empathy for… most things nowadays, she was trusting him to become an entirely new species and command over a portion of her army. If anything, she could spare him a moment to let that weight truly fall upon his consciousness and see how he reacted. He understood that many gifts that the world offered generally came with a high cost. He wasn’t excited over the prospect of the agony that was coming but even with knowing it was only moments from now, he wasn’t going to back off from it. He even added that the reward, spending eternity with her, was quite worth the pain. Her smile widened a touch, amused and taken in a little by his charm. “If only all beings seeking divinity had such an elegant muse to keep their pain away,” she said alluringly, reaching up to stroke his cheek with her hand.

She asked if he was prepared for the task and he admitted that he probably was not, which was the absolute truth. No matter what mental preparations he made for the change, it would surpass that in agony and strangeness. Despite his admission, he had no intention of backing off now, having made up his mind. She gave him a soft nod and then guided him into the chamber. It was a large room, with several pillars rising from the ground to the shadowed ceiling above. Sconces filled with purple flames were attached to the stone structures, illuminating the room as best they could. A large bowl depressed into the floor in the center, filled with a silver liquid that was completely smooth, showing no signs of movement. Twelve robed figures surrounded the pool, with the Thirteenth, Jilh, standing the closest to them without a covering.

Faera led him to the basin’s edge and then turned to him. “Let us remove these,” she said, gesturing to his tattered robes. But she imagined he would be quite surprised when she, too, dissolved her own clothing and left herself as nude as him. She took his hand in hers and led him down into the liquid, the moisture thick like molasses. Carefully she eased him down into the liquid until he was floating on its surface, his body settled on it like a boat upon an ocean. “Visa zuti kash jena'tes. Ir visa mazo arti. Darytis jena'tes. Naudot tave jena'tes. Wo Kingdom Jena'tes.” Faera began to chant softly as her fingers trailed over the man’s form, starting from his forehead and running down. A vein of darkness seeped out from the pad of her finger and set itself into his flesh, spreading roots deep into his flesh as runic symbols took form along the trail she blazed. She took her time to chant and trace his body, making sure she touched upon every part that was facing her. Once his front was traced, she pulled her finger back and looked to the Immortal Thirteen surrounding the pool.

They began to chant as well, repeating the same phrases that Faera had just uttered. The Divine leaned down and plated a soft but certainly passionate kiss upon Hugo’s lips, before pulling back to smile. “For luck,” she said with a menacing tone. Then her hand placed itself upon his chest, her fingers splaying over his pectorals as magical energy built into her form. If he looked close enough, he would see a river of darkness flowing out of each member of the Thirteen and coalescing within the Divine. Then she breathed a deep sigh as she pushed the former human man under the liquid, the moisture pulling him to the bottom of the basin.

From there, the pain would truly begin.

Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
He voiced his thoughts over Serilda’s fears, or at least those she used to have, and expressed his surprise over her willingness to not just engage against a goddess in battle but to ally herself with demon lords in the process. Faera assured him that his assessment of the woman was still very much correct, as the goddess had been able to sense Serilda’s fear while the mortal had been within her realm. It seemed Serilda had indeed been quite terrified of the task before her, however the motivation that she had at the time -- freeing this Mythal -- far outweighed any dread she felt. The noblewoman had put a large target on her back in her boldness to take Kingdom Darkness by storm and remove Mythal from Faera’s grasp, but in doing so also had earned herself quite a bit of respect from the goddess. Serilda had proven herself a force to be reckoned with, even on the level of gods and demons.

It was all very… interesting. Even at his most disrespectful, Hugo could never deny that Serilda had always had a lot of things going for her. She was beautiful, collected, commanding in her own way, intelligent, and more than capable of combat. However, she had also been naive about a great many things, overly trusting, paralyzed by her fears, and usually had the personality of cold sandpaper. Sure, she had shown a softer side around him once he’d started to court her and that had at least made her more bearable, but at the same time it had made her all the more boring. Soft and delicate women were a dime a dozen. Hugo liked his women confident, rough around the edges, and wild, things Serilda had never been.

Now, though, it seemed she had grown quite a bit past that, and for the first time in his life -- or well, existence -- Hugo actually found himself genuinely interested in hers. For once, Serilda actually sounded a bit exciting.

But there would be plenty of time to focus on upheaving her life later. For now, Hugo had more pressing and important matters at hand that included the company of a sexy and deadly goddess. He had even chanced another elegant flirtation in their conversation, which was met with a smile, if an amused one. Faera complimented herself in reply to his words, but it didn’t put him off. If anything, it just made her all the more alluring to him, particularly as she reached up and brushed her fingers sensually along his face. The act sent a shiver down his spine, one that he couldn’t entirely hide. Not that he was trying to. He had a hunch that while Faera probably enjoyed a man that could face her despite the effects of her terrifying aura, she probably also enjoyed the rises her powerful presence got out of lesser beings such as himself. And hey, if that was what did it for her, he didn’t mind letting her have her fill.

Faera inquired as to his readiness and Hugo briefly explained that, while he probably wasn’t as ready as he should be, there was no reason to linger and he had no intentions of backing out. So, she drew him into the room beyond and the place where his fate would be forever changed. The room was dimly lit with a series of violet flames set upon a series of pillars that reached up into the dark ceiling. Despite the images he’d formed in his head when she’d referred to the “cauldron”, it was not a raised structure as such but rather a pool of sorts built into the floor and filled with what he assumed was a liquid of some kind. It was difficult to tell. It was silver in color, but so smooth that it looked solid, with nary a ripple or shiver to suggest that one couldn’t simply walk across its surface without falling in. Surrounding the pool were the Immortal Thirteen, though nearly all of them were hidden beneath their cowls. The only one to show her face was Jihl, who stood closest to them where they had entered.

Hugo eyed the other mortal curiously for a moment as Faera led him toward the edge of the pool, his expression blank aside from the attentive way he took in the room itself. He had no understanding as of yet as to the purpose of the mysterious group, though surely all would be revealed to him in time. The goddess drew his attention back to her as she remarked about his rags and removed them, the fraying material crumbling out of existence and leaving him as bare as the day he’d been born. He was a little surprised, but not much, and certainly not embarrassed. Hugo had little to be embarrassed about. He was a large man covered in tight, rippling muscles from head to toe, with exceptionally broad shoulders and toned abs that may as well have been chiseled out of marble. He had spent the majority of his adult life working hard labor in the Sinclair mines, and even after death it showed just what great shape the job had put him in.

However, he wasn’t the only one who was naked. Faera had also waved away her own clothing, revealing herself to be quite as succulent beneath her leotard as the rest of her had suggested. Hugo was doing his best to be professional, but he couldn’t help the slight wandering his eyes did in the brief moment he had to do so before she took him by the hand and drew him into the pool. The liquid felt as thick as it looked, more like sludge than water. Given the rather large mass of his body, Hugo was met with quite the resistance as he tried to push his way through it. Once they were in the center, Faera physically eased him down into the substance until he was floating upon its surface with the entire front of his body exposed to the shadowed roof above him.

He remained in relatively somber silence as she began to work her magic, soaking up the last few moments that remained of his mortality and anticipating the rough road that laid before him. Faera ran her fingertips meticulously along his body, starting at his face and moving lower from there. Though he couldn’t see the runes forming along his flesh, nor the darkness that spread from her finger, he could more than feel its power. It was unlike anything he’d ever felt before, a simmering might that made his body tremble like it was about to burst from a pressure it couldn’t sustain. It wasn’t painful, though, and so he could only assume that everything at the moment was simply set up and preparation for the culmination of the ritual. The goddess chanted as she worked, moving her way down toward his toes and despite everything, he couldn’t help the slight excitement he got at her touch.

Eventually, the Immortals picked up the goddess’ chant, and with nowhere else to look but up Hugo didn’t miss the strands of darkness that wove their way through the air and into Faera. Of course, his attention was quickly pulled from that when Faera’s face obscured his vision, the stunning woman leaning down and placing her lips on his. Hugo wasn’t sure if this was part of the ritual or not, as he couldn’t feel any of her magic seeping into him like it had from her fingers, but he didn’t really care. All he did was take the moment and opportunity to enjoy it, bold enough to return the rather lustful gesture with a soft grunt of appreciation and desire. The act, Faera told him rather ominously after she’d pulled away, had not been part of the ritual but rather to wish him luck, and he understood in that moment that the hard part was about to begin.

He wanted to smirk at her or do something to mask his fear behind some kind of layer of false confidence, even a playful one that they both would know was a front. However, even a man as staunch as he was couldn’t help but dread what was before him, and he couldn’t bring it in himself to pretend otherwise. Particularly when her wishes of good fortune to him promised pain unlike anything he’d experienced before. Considering that Hugo had died a slow and agonizing death with his body being crushed by a boulder, that was saying a lot. Faera put her hand on his chest and Hugo braced himself, physically and mentally, before submerging him fully beneath the liquid.

In an instant, he was swallowed in blinding misery. His entire body felt like it was on fire, each nerve searing in agony so hot that he might as well have been submerged into a sun. Without stopping to think about it, Hugo’s mouth opened on instinct to scream only to accidentally breath the thick molasses into his lungs. He began to choke, a process that was unfathomably horrific given that he was already dead and could, theoretically, endure the sensation for an indefinite amount of time without release. He clawed desperately at his chest and throat, thrashing beneath the surface of the pool and desperate for air. His mind was utterly blank, unable to think about anything except for the way it felt like every single molecule in his body was violently morphing and rearranging themselves.

How long it lasted, Hugo wasn’t sure. It felt like hours. He’d lost all sense of time, his entire world consisting of nothing but anguish and unbridled fear. As everything came to a culmination, his wild lashings were exchanged with the stiff arching of his back as the dark magic consumed him so deeply he couldn’t even control his own body anymore, completely at the mercy of the power that felt like it was ripping him apart piece by piece, coalescing most potently along either side of his spine.

And like that, it was over. Hugo broke through the surface of the liquid with a feral roar so loud and deep it shook the cavern. His skin had turned an ashy black color, his once dark hair a pristine white and flowing well past his shoulders. If anything, his already overly muscular form had bulked itself even more. Six great wings with dusty silver and white feathers protruded from his back, each one about as long as he was tall and flexed to their full span behind him. Over his head floated a dark halo with several spikes along it that caused it to resemble more of a crown than anything else. Completely white eyes that lacked any irises or pupils were wide as saucers as he stared ahead, not really registering anything at all as he hunched where he stood, gasping deeply for air. His new form still shook greatly from the ordeal it had just gone through, his muscles knotting and spasming uncontrollably in the lingering effects of agony.

He fought to get his body and breath under control, which got easier with each second that went by as the reality of immortality and divinity settled into his core until he was finally calm, if a bit weary. Finally, he was able to look at himself, or at least that which he could see. His hands lifted in front of his face, turning gently so he could observe the new tint of his flesh. He flexed his back and the wings that now graced it, getting a feel for their weight and range before gently settling them down. Standing shakily to his feet, he realized he was much taller than before as well, easily having added at least another foot from what his mortal height to a total of around seven feet.

Turning his head to glance down at the goddess, his colorless eyes watched her for a moment seemingly without emotion before a light smirk tugged up his lips. “Does it look as good as it feels?” he asked her.

The only arning Faera had delivered to Hugo about what lay ahead had been the singular warning of the pain. Truthfully, that was all she could put into words -- she had never had to experience the sensation of her entire mortality being ripped from her soul and replaced with something greater. She had been born a goddess and while many liked to believe that supreme beings were all-knowing, they were not. All she truly knew was that the ritual created agony on a scale that couldn’t be properly measured and doing so wasn’t a guaranteed success. What she hadn’t told Hugo was that it was entirely possible that the trauma could be too much and his soul could splinter into pieces. His mind would be torn asunder and any sense of self or consciousness would be forever lost. It was a dreadful existence and certainly not one suited for a man she claimed she wanted as an ally.

But the only way one could succeed was to believe they could. The ritual was magical but it was more spiritual than that, requiring the targeted soul to be prepared for the next step. If she were to tell the former human that he could fail and be left in a state of lingering mindlessness, the fear would set in. His confidence, however strong, would still be weighed down by the possibility of losing all his senses. So it was a tactical choice on her part to simply leave it out -- to let him think it was a guaranteed change. And while he was fearful for the pain, he seemed more than ready for it and that’s exactly how she needed him. Perhaps her hope was a bit higher than normal; that was why she bent down and pressed her lips against his, giving him a kiss that no other had received in millenia. Even as a mortal, she found herself impressed with him and truly wished that the ritual would pass without consequence. Once she parted from her, she lay a single hand on his chest, ready to submerge him beneath the surface. She let him have one last moment of sweet reprieve before she thrust him down below, his form disappearing within the milky silver liquid.

She stepped back away from his form as the process began. She heard the gargled scream from his mouth, quickly silenced as the liquid poured into the open orifice and filled it. The Thirteen continued to chant in perfect tandem and harmony, their voices even and unemotional as they watched the silver liquid splash and churn violently from Hugo’s machinations beneath the surface. The Divine stood just beyond his reach, watching carefully as he suffered through the worst pain he was likely to feel in his life, both after and prior. She still wore an even smile, looking almost amused at the mortal’s pain and honestly, it wasn’t far from the truth. While she wished for Serilda’s former beau to survive so that her plans had a better means of succeeded, she couldn’t help but relish in the agony that was being brought upon a mortal soul. Its torture and pain fed her, the corruption of Kingdom Darkness making such unthinkable acts of violence and misery as filling as veritable sustenance.

But it wasn’t just enjoyment over his pain; there was also excitement over what lay beyond this trial. Watching this man’s soul be stripped of its mortality and rise to an entirely new platform was unlike any pleasure she had felt before. It was domination on an entirely different scale -- making extinct what was less and giving birth to the superior race. Were she so inclined to care about other mortals, she may have considered using this practice on all that lay in the realm of light, so that they may all serve her on a grander scale. But the effort and time to do such a thing was too much than she was willing to sacrifice -- in the end, the souls of the other world would bolster her shadow army and nothing more. But Hugo, should he succeed, would be given full control and rule over that same army, should his words of obligation and loyalty ring true.

It was a full hour of Kingdom Darkness time before the man’s flailing came to an end. The surface of the liquid exploded outwards as he burst to his feet, roaring with a carnal rage that spoke of the misery that had taken him for so long. The Thirteen fell silent as all the eyes of the room looked upon his changed form, the change to an archangel complete and true. His skin was as dark as freshly spewed ash, his hair as white as toxic snow and hanging about his shoulders. His finely toned form had thickened with even more muscle, making his entire body tight and on par with Adonis. Six wings spread out behind him, flexing their full length to stretch and experience existence for the first time. A sick, shapely halo hovered over his head, stating the holiness of his existence for all to see. His sclera was completely white, overwhelming any iris that had existed before and leaving his eyes as pure as freshly packed snow.

He had risen and become beyond his former self. Faera couldn’t help her smile from spreading just a bit wider as he continued to process his new existence, mind, body and soul catching up to one another to once more be a singular force. Once he was aware of his surroundings, he lifted his hands and stared at them, the sight of his skin registering within his understanding. He stretched his wings for the first time of his own volition, feeling their weight and girth. As he rose to his feet, he stood nearly as tall as Ruman, easily towering over her in both build and height. Once he had properly gotten a feel for his form, his gaze turned towards her, asking if his appearance was as suitable as the feeling he was experiencing. She chuckled softly, striding forward to rest a hand on his abdomen, specifically right on his abs. “Oh I believe you look far better,” she teased him softly as she turned to face outward. “Witness the birth of the newest Trumpet of Despair, Hugo!”

"Hail the Trumpet of Despair, Hugo!” Jihl led the chant, swiftly followed by the rest of the Thirteen. At the conclusion of their praise, each one of them fell to their knees and bowed to the newest member of Faera’s most precious choir.

After a moment of letting them revel, Faera waved her hand at the group, dismissing them. All Thirteen bowed their heads and turned away, portals of darkness popping up into existence behind each of them that they strode through and disappeared. Once they were alone, Faera turned towards Hugo once more, still smiling. “This form is your true archangel form -- the Aspect of Despair. Your full power is on display when you take on this form, granting you control over all the darkness that now runs through your veins. But it does take up energy over time, especially if used outside of this realm. Allow your mind to relax and remember your prior form, picture it at the forefront of your mind.” She would wait for him to listen to her words, watching quietly as his body shifted back to his prior appearance. Once he had, she would speak again. “Now then, your mind is now properly prepared for the transfer of my knowledge. Relax your body, let your thoughts drift away,” she cooed to him as she reached up and placed her hands on either side of his face.

His mind would flood with darkness, pale images bursting through the shadows to present themselves before his mind’s eye. Her voice would echo in his mind as well, guiding him through the images before they implanted themselves into his brain. “Everything begins in darkness and all so end. The world of light was birthed from nonexistence by a miracle but, in so doing, the former darkness needed to be pushed out. This realm was created out of that primal matter, meant to house its toxicity away from existence. Of all the Absolute Divines, I was tasked with watching over the realm… and in doing so, I understood the barest truth. The world of light is a mutation; it is the disease that purged the pure darkness from its rightful home and imprisoned it here. In time, I understood that I was meant to bring darkness back to the world of light and every realm beyond, swallowing them back in the purity of shadow. To do so, I needed to exist within the other realm.”

The image of a thin man with dark hair and red eyes would appear in his vision, standing beside the all-too-familiar face of Serilda. “Over time, I was able to send my archangels to the other world and gain a foothold in the mortal’s lives. A religion was dedicated to me and to my ascendance, the order called the Sons of Faera. Through them, I was able to find a suitable candidate to mate with the former Trumpet of Despair and create a vessel in which I could embody. But an order within the realm of light, called the Rune Knights, attacked and interrupted the ritual before it could be completed. My second attempt to take control of Mythal resulted in him resisting my influence and stealing a portion of my power to call his own. I was understandably furious but then it allowed me an opportunity to learn. My plan to simply use Mythal as a vessel was sound but I far underestimated how much fate liked to intervene. And once my vessel had grown, his willpower had increased exponentially -- proving once again that humans were resilient, despite their base and mortal forms. I was humbled, to say the least and was forced to take a step back and rethink my strategy. I left him stumble through the world of light for years, observing him, studying him. And once I felt I had learned enough, I crafted a plan. ”

“Since then, I have nipped at his heels without serious intent. The former Trumpet of Despair enacted a plan that would have brought Mythal here but his own selfish ambitions brought it to ruin. But during his time here, Mythal connected to Kingdom Darkness and took control of its magic. While many falsely claim this phenomenon as the birth of a ‘Darkness King’, it is merely my magic acting through him. In mastering that magic, he has opened a gateway within himself that he is unaware of. Through this, I aim to cause mischief within him and Serilda’s life. Should the ritual I am planning work, then I will have successfully taken over Mythal’s form. But I do not anticipate a full victory. No, I simply wish to remind them that I am watching -- let them think that this was my grand plan for success. But that is far, far grander than any of them can possibly imagine…”

The connection simmered down until it was broken, leaving him with a vast knowledge that he hadn’t had before. The transfer had connected him directly with Faera’s mind, opening up a stream of consciousness that merged their souls and minds together briefly. The effect was a far more pleasing one than the one he had just experienced, dialing his senses to a level beyond capacity. It also had the side effect of a heavy, intoxicating surge of primal emotions. Even Faera, as divine as she was, couldn’t help but look flustered as she fixed him with a heated gaze. “Now that you have been raised up, my Trumpet… I believe a celebration is in order.” And beyond her own comprehension, she pulled his face to hers, capturing his lips once more but this time with far more desire and intent.
