Post by Shane Stern 8th December 2022, 9:09 am

A long sigh, one of relief, was released from the man’s mouth as he stood up from the ground, a crumpled body lying at his feet. His face was splattered with drops of blood but it was purple. A broken shield, snapped into half from repeated impact laid on the ground beside the corpse. The two of them had arrived at this clearing atop a hill through a dimensional portal. It was a last ditch attempt to escape, opened by the one now lying dead in the ground. The man was Zamza Mock, one of the last few High Envoy of the demon Drakodun.

Ten years ago, Drakodun had arrived on the planet Athea and within a year, had already left the entire planet in ruins. Countries, governments were destroyed. Humankind was split into two factions, those that had chosen to forsake their dignities and embrace their new overlord while the remaining twenty percent of the population had formed the rebellion. For the past ten years, the war had between the forces of Drakodun and the rebellion had been fought continuously. The rebellion had always been on the back foot. They were outnumbered. And in a world that had progressed along the rails of technology, the mystic powers that Drakodun had granted his followers had left the rebellion outmatched.

They could only escape whenever an Envoy appeared on the battlefield and pray for a swift death when it was a High Envoy.

Until the rebellion finally found their key to victory. Despite years and years of being pushed back, the rebellion forces had never given up on their experiments to create the ultimate super soldiers, to fight back against the High Envoys. The tides of war had turned abruptly when twenty super soldiers had descended upon the battlefield, fighting toe to toe against the mystic powers of the Envoys and High Envoys with their raw physical capabilities.

“It’s finally over,” the victor exclaimed to himself as he looked down on the corrupted human. The rebellion had taken the fight to the Temple of Drakodun himself, the demon himself abandoning his conquest when he saw it no longer possible to win, leaving his followers to face the wrath of the rebellion. And so began the slaughter.

Splitting up to hunt down the escaping Envoys and High Envoys, the bearded man had chased after three targets, the last of them being Zamza. He had unhesitatingly jumped through the portal after the High Envoy, wanting nothing more but to kill him, even if he was leaping into hell itself.

Looking around and merely grunting when he realized the portal back to Athea was gone, the man was just about to start figuring out what he had to do now when he realizing something was wrong.

No, it wasn’t that something was wrong. Something was familiar.

Brows scrunched and gazing around intently, the bearded man held up his arms and looked at his hands. His eyes widened in surprise, a glint of glee flashing by in his expression as a thought entered his mind. A long, forgotten thought that had never thought would be possible ever again.

His hands trembled from the excitement before he quickly balled them up into fists to keep them steady. He closed his eyes and inhaled deeply before letting it out again in a long draught.

“I’m back,” was all he said before running down the hill. There was tremble to his voice, emotions welling up in his throat. An energy that he had never expected to experience again coursed through his entire body, increasing his already enhanced speed as he barreled through the branches and trees in his way, arms crossed in front of him.

“This is it. The feeling! I’m really back!!!” And this time, he shouted.

By sheer luck, the portal had led to Fiore, and it wasn’t too far away from Era. As he walked through the roads, soaking in the city, its buildings and its people, memories began flooding back into his mind. And as those memories returned to the surface, an excited smirk at the corner of his mouth could no longer be hidden.

It had been ten long years. Ten years of longing and searching for a way back home. And it was fate that brought him back. But what he did not know was the decade he had spent off planet was merely one year here.

He didn’t normally shed tears, but the corners of his eyes were wet when he finally stopped his steps and stood in front of the grandest building in the whole of Era.

    The Rune Knight Headquarters.

Dressed in a full-body combat suit that had seen better days, while sporting a full beard and moustache with messy and dirty blonde hair, the man ignored the piercing gazes that people were giving him and stepped right up to the main entrance. He had already cleaned himself up on the way here, doing the best he could. At least he wasn’t walking around covered in blood anymore. He pushed it open, his smile growing slightly wider when he saw Valorie at the reception desk and walked in straight without missing a beat.
His voice was gruff, and he had to clear his throat twice to ease the choking sensation before he could even speak properly.

“Hi, may I know if the Field Marshall and Director is still Serilda Sinclair and Mythal Ragnos?”

Was there anyone else that was capable of greeting recruits?

Mythal was in his office trying to get some paperwork done when he received a buzz from Valorie. She didn’t offer much of a deep explanation, simply stating that she felt there was someone at the front desk he would want to see. When he asked if it was someone wanting to join the ranks of the Rune Knights, Valorie gave him the most waffled answer he’d ever heard from her. “Sort of,” Mythal parroted the response with a scoff as he headed down towards the reception area. What the hell was sort of supposed to mean? Also weren’t there generals in charge that could take care of the recruits as well? He felt like he’d gone to meet and invite half a dozen recruits recently. Granted, they were all people he hadn’t regretted initiating, save for maybe Morgaine. Well, he probably shouldn’t complain; meeting the new recruits was a welcome break from the reports from the warfront.

Rounding the corner and entering the reception area, Mythal didn’t pay much attention to anyone else as he walked up to the desk. “Alright, Val, the hell is this ‘sort of’ person yer talkin’ about?” he asked.

She was quick to point to the man standing right to the desk and Mythal’s gaze shifted over to him. He looked… well, he looked beat to hell. Almost as if he’d just walked off a battlefield. His combat outfit was worn, damaged and covered in several different colored stains. He was a bit disheveled, sporting a full beard and mustache that covered most of his face. Familiarity did not strike Mythal immediately, if only because his ability to store people’s faces and names wasn’t the best, given his upbringing. “Hey,” he said, giving the man a once over and a quick nod of the head. “You some kind of vet? Comin’ to rejoin the Rune--”

Something in his eyes caused the words to die in the Darkness Slayer’s throat. Now squinting he took a few steps towards the man, now studying him a bit closer. There was something familiar about him, something he couldn’t quite place. The eyes had given him pause and as he continued to look at the baby blues, the image of a younger, cleaner soldier came to mind. Slowly Mythal’s eyes opened wider as it struck him who was standing before him; aged, beaten and grimy as a soldier out of the trenches but still an old face, an old friend. “Shane?” he finally asked, awe overwhelming him. “How did… where…?”

Almost as quickly as he said the name, he glanced around. Shane Stern was still wanted for the death of a Magic Council member; a charge that had never been properly investigated but rather informed as of the Council’s own ‘investigators’. Mythal and Serilda had, understandably, never bought into that, knowing the circumstances were far too convenient to make any kind of proper sense. “Room two,” he told Shane quickly, putting his hand on his arm and practically dragging him in the direction of the interview rooms. “Val, get a hold of Seri and tell her to get down here as soon as possible.”

A short walk down the hall brought them to the room and Mythal all but threw Shane in, turning and closing the door behind him. He even made sure to lock it before he turned back to the missing veteran. “Shane… goddamn it’s good to see ya,” the Darkness Slayer said, stepping forward and giving the man a hug. It was an odd move on Mythal’s part, he wasn’t accustomed to showing any kind of display of affection for anyone beyond his own family and even then it was almost only strictly Serilda and his children. But Shane was one of the old guard, a man who had gone through thick and thin as the Rune Knights were reforming and getting their balance in the world.

Realizing that hugging the man was a bit strange, Mythal stepped back. “We thought the Council had gotten to ya. Where the hell ya been this whole time?”

Shane’s smile went wide into a grin when he saw the change in Valorie’s expression from one of mild surprise to a sour scowl. She tsked at him with a small hint of smile before picking up the phone to dial for someone. The answer to who she was calling was quickly revealed. It was the Director. Excited to see his friend and former superior, Shane fidgeted slightly while standing at the counter, leaning on one elbow while waiting for the familiar face to walk out of the staff entrance.

In the short time that they were waiting for Mythal to arrive, Shane had struck up a conversation with the Rune Knights HQ’s receptionist. Normally Shane wouldn’t have much to chat with Valorie but he used this chance to know what had went on during the time he was gone.

Their conversation was cut short when the Director finally appeared. The man had went over to Valorie first, to get the details since she hadn’t been really helpful on purpose in her call earlier. She pointed him to Shane’s direction, with the Director’s gaze following.

Still leaning on the counter on one elbow, Shane cracked the most charming smile he could possible muster under the layers of dirt and grime crusted all over him. There were mud and dried blood in his hair, while the thick moustache and beard on the lower half of his face made him look like a homeless person. Oh, his clothes weren’t helping too. Torn and patched over and over again, Shane’s battle suit looked utterly terrible and did nothing to help his image. Coming to think of it, it was already a miracle that no one had tried to stop and question him when he walked into the HQ.

Shane nodded back to Mythal’s gesture, smirking when he heard the first words out of his mouth. He was betting that the Director couldn’t recognize him. During his talk with Valorie, she had revealed that it had only been one year since his disappearance. The passage of one year here compared to his ten-year stint on another planet had aged him appropriately and the aging hadn’t been reversed when he returned to Earthland.

The dirty man barked out a mischievous laugh when he saw the realization dawn on Mythal, the change in his eyes when he saw who it was behind the dirt and beard.

“Boss man!” Shane replied when his name was finally called but before he could even continue further, Mythal had grabbed him by his arm and pulled him off towards the interview rooms. Shane still remembered how he had once been in those rooms when he had applied to join the Rune Knights, but those memories were so far off now.

Like an angry mum marching their son back to their room, Shane was brought into the second interview room, the same one he had told Valorie to get Serilda to go to. Shane almost knocked over the table when he was unceremoniously shoved into the room while Mythal had slammed the door shut and locked it.

The hug had came very unexpectedly. Shane’s smile broke down slightly, touched by Mythal’s response to his reappearance. He knew the man wasn’t someone who showed his affections so openly, so it made the hug even more significant to him. Shane returned the hug as well before the two men stepped apart.

Shane took a turn around the table and pulled out of the chairs to take a seat. Plopping down into the seat, without a care in the world, with no looming threat of death breathing down his neck, the dirty soldier let out a small sigh of relief. How long had it been since he had had a proper moment to just sit down and relax, to release everything off his shoulders in the past ten years, was a question he found no answer to.

“Ten years ago.. No, it’s only one year here. One year ago, I walked into a trap. Someone wanted to kill the Magic Council member, I can’t remember his name actually, and part of their plan was to use me so that they could implicate the Rune Knights. I was injected with a hallucinogen that made me lose control of myself. I only wanted to fight and kill whatever was in front of me. Long story short, I almost killed the man with my own fists when my squad managed to stop me in time and brought me away. And the next day, the Council member was found dumped in a drain, dead from assault.”

“And here’s where the story gets wacky,” Shane continued with a mocking laugh.

“After I left, I happened upon a suspicious party of five individuals. They were bad guys, I caught them in the act, we fought and one of them threw open a portal under me and I was transported somewhere else.”

“When I woke up, I was on some planet called Althea that was at war on a planetary scale. Demon took over the planet, demon conquered the human race, small portion of the human race fought back while trying to find a way to win. I joined the rebellion, fighting every single day for ten whole years. Oh yea, time travels differently there, so while it’s only been a year here, it was ten years for me over there. And finally, we succeeded. We perfected the serum to create artificially enhanced super soldiers, I volunteered to be one of them. We managed to create ten super soldiers, and we stormed the demon’s castle. The demon escaped but we cleared out of all of his higher-ranked lackeys. I was chasing one of the lackeys when, surprise surprise, he opened a portal to escape and it coincidentally led back to Earthland.”

“The beard looks pretty good on me, huh?” Shane grinned as he ran his right hand through his facial hair. “How’s things in Fiore though? From what Valorie told me, things sound pretty bad over here as well. And I heard Doppo left too.”

A face from the past he had never expected to see again. A morbid thought but it seemed Shane had gotten wrapped up in some terribly complicated issues with the Council. And as with most things and people that got on the Magic Council’s bad side, it seemed like he was destined to disappear for good. Oh, Mythal knew the cover story. Shane had assaulted and killed a former Council member and had been deemed guilty of the crime without much pomp and circumstance. It had always been shady and the Director knew Shane well enough to know when horseshit was being spread using his name. But there wasn’t much he could do, ordered to take Shane into custody if he ever saw him again.

That’d been over a year prior and with Shane in the wind, it was only safe to assume that the Council had had him silenced. Another guilty charge to add to the ever growing pile of the Magic Council’s deeds.Yet here was the man, worn, tired and more than a little grimy but alive. Mythal did the only thing he could think of and dragged the man away from prying eyes, closing the door behind them and, oddly, embracing him. Once he had broken the soft moment, he asked the only questions that any normal person would ask. Shane took a moment to walk around the table and have a seat, a heavy sigh leaving his mouth. The weight of his expulsion was tale enough of what he had gone through and as Mythal sat down across from him, Shane started by remembering back a decade before righting himself, clarifying that it had only been a year here.

The bug-eyed look Mythal gave him was probably fairly cartoonish but that was a big difference in time. Shane continued, explaining that he’d gotten caught in a trap and used as a tool in a plot to kill a Council member and paint the Rune Knights as guilty. He described how it had affected him, making him vicious and violent. He’d nearly killed the target before the rest of his squadron had swooped in and saved him from dealing the killing blow. But the man still died later from other means and Shane was painted as the culprit all the same. Escaping from Era, Shane found a group of suspicious people that he engaged. In the ensuing chaos, he was dropped into a portal and thrown to another world entirely; a planet called Althea.

Apparently the world was at war, caught between rebelling humans and the demon overlords that had conquered the planet. Shane had joined the rebellion and been fighting against the horde for over ten years. He explained that the time dilation between there and here was different, as a single year here was ten years there. Near the end of his time there, the humans had managed to create a super soldier serum and Shane had been one of the ones to volunteer to take it. With not even a dozen of the soldiers, they stormed the demon’s base and while the head honcho had escaped, all of the higher ranking demons had been slain. In his pursuit of one of them, Shane had been forced through another portal by the dying demon, bringing him back to Earthland.

He then commented on the beard, stating that it looked good on him and flashing a grin. Immediately he turned his question to Fiore, having only gotten a quick glossing over from Valorie of the state of the world. He also questioned about someone named… Doppo. Mythal squinted in confusion, the name not ringing any bells or rather not sparking an immediate realization. It took him a solid moment to put any kind of familiarity to the name. “Oh, Doppo. That was the guy who had all those rumors circulating around him, right? Had puppies with a half-dog, half-woman, ate all of Dies Irae’s reserves, punched civilians in flower fields? Yeah, he clocked out some time ago. Don’t know where he’s been.” Mythal leaned back in his chair. “But yeah, you came back into another world war, buddy. Pergrande and Bellum were at each other’s throats and then Joya tried to play peacekeeper. Ended up getting nuked; millions of people dead. Now everyone’s drawn lines and Fiore is standin’ by Bellum.” Not that that was going very well either. “And yeah, the beard looks good on ya. Especially now since, apparently, yer an old man all of a sudden.” Mythal flashed him a wry smirk.

“Good thing you have it though. I imagine no one can recognize ya with it, else you woulda been pinned down and arrested immediately ‘fore I could get to ya.” The situation was still complicated, of course. Mythal could verify that everything Shane was saying was the truth, his magic lending him the ability to sense dishonesty, but he had intentionally been keeping that a secret so that the Council couldn’t find out about it. If he revealed it to help Shane, which he was earnestly considering, it would give away one of their trump cards in the investigation of the Council itself. “Once Seri gets here, we’ll need to come up with a game plan. I know it’s been a year here but I think our first step is provin’ that you weren’t the one that killed that Council member.”

The response that he got Mythal when he spoke about his outlandish tale of being transported to another planet where ten years there equaled one here was expected. He had been quite surprised as well when Valorie had given him the current year when he had asked, the puzzled look in her eyes unaddressed by Shane when he received the answer. To know that he had unwittingly gone through ten years of his life while only one had passed in Earthland had shook up his mind but after all he had been through, Shane had accepted the fact for what it was and moved past it.

However, Shane’s mouth dropped open when Mythal gave his response to his offhand question about Doppo. He had been of the same rank as Shane when Shane had resigned from the Rune Knights, and to hear all the weird rumors about the guy was quite unbelievable and funny at the same time. But wasn’t that half-dog, half-woman also a member of the Rune Knights? Shane knew there was someone like that in the Combat Corps, but he couldn’t really get a clear memory of her.

Mythal finally leaned back into his chair when the most distressing topic was approached. Shane got his abridged version of the ongoing war, and as usual, it was always Pergrande and Bellum that was right in the mix of it. Joya trying to place the role of peacekeeper was news to him. And how they had been nuked because of their intervention didn’t sit well with him. As he heard about the war, the blood in Shane began boiling again, hungering for action and it worried him. He wasn’t sure if it was due to the call to duty, to carry out his job as a Rune Knight and the want to help bring peace that was driving him, or if it was just because of the insecurity of knowing how little use he would be during times of peace. While the ten years of war on Althea had constantly worn down on him physically and mentally, he had developed a habit of being able to put his body’s need for rest on hold until the completion of whatever task or job on hand.

Shane was worried his thoughts would show on his face, using a wide grin to try and cover up his insecurities instead. “Time to drop back into the trenches then.”

“I guess getting captured and thrown into prison would be a shortcut to reaching you,” Shane let out a laugh as he leaned back further into his chair, if that was even physically possible.

“I’ve given it some thought on my way back. What if we don’t do anything about it? Everyone knows I’m gone, the Council probably has enough on their plates regarding the war. Why not use me in the dark? Undercover, espionage, all that stuff that the Rune Knights are not able to do because we have to stand in the light.”

“Granted the Rune Knights shouldn’t be dabbling in the shadows, but I do feel we need someone to stand against those who want to act against in the dark. What do you think?”

If Mythal could sense Shane’s misgivings over his place in the world, he didn’t seem to show it. Truth was, while he was a living lie detector and perfectly capable of sensing a person’s intentions, be it noble or otherwise, his abilities weren’t perfect. He wasn’t able to discern the slightest change in emotions; only the larger ones that would affect a person’s heart rate. Other than that, he was as in the dark as any normal person. So while there seemed to be a moment where Shane was still in his head, the smile that came after wasn’t met curiously. After all, Shane had, almost literally, just returned from a realm where several years had passed. It was understandable that he would be a little thoughtful.

And while Shane seemed enthused, to a point, about getting back to war, it was hardly what Mythal wanted for him or anyone, really. Bellum and Pergrande had dragged almost all of Ishgar into conflict, threatening livelihoods of people who had no part in the decades-long issue. People were losing their lives because their nation had decided they were best served partaking rather than trying to talk them out of the senseless violence. But who was he to talk? He was doing the exact same thing and wasn’t making much of a stand either. Shane remarked about how getting thrown into prison would have, hypothetically, brought them together sooner, earning an amused snort from the Darkness Slayer. But as he outlined his plan to try and restore Shane’s image, the soldier went a different route. He believed he was better used with his name still tarnished, allowing him to move and fight in the shadows while the whole of the Rune Knights stood tall. He could act as a spy, going undercover and enacting less morale actions for the sake of the greater good.

As he saw it, the Rune Knights had to be presentable, respectable and, more importantly, responsible. As he saw it, someone should be standing in the dark to fight those in the shadows on even ground. Mythal shook his head idly, unable to fight back the smirk. “But how will we live without our shining beacon and icon? Yer a bit of a celebrity, bud,” Mythal teased the other man before he continued. “Truth is, that ain’t as far fetched as ya might think it is. Reaper Squadron is a Spec Ops outfit that operates outside of the limited boundaries we usually have. We have a few people undercover as well, including Reaper’s old SO, Dakvid. We also may or may not employ a shadow operative who is… less than savory, I guess, in terms of what the Rune Knights usually stand for.” Trying to go into the background of Scourge would be, at minimum, complicated.

Mythal leaned forward. “Point is, I ain’t opposed to usin’ ya like a shadow operative too. Hell, you were one of the best soldiers we had, I can only imagine the kind of shit you’ll drum up when you don’t have as many restrictions. We’re trying to end this war sooner rather than later. That and, well, tryin’ to deal with those that set you up. They’re gettin’ worse and it’s high time we start makin’ some moves to counter ‘em.” After a moment, he let out a breath. “Just… don’t get swallowed up in the dark, yeah? Once ya cross that line, it’s hard to come back. And we ain’t losin’ ya a second time. Too much paperwork.”

“So if that’s what ya want, we can make it happen. We’ll run it by Seri and see what she says but I doubt she’ll object. Then I’m sure we’ll have some shit for you to start workin’ on, ‘less you got any ideas.”
