“Oh, he’s fine, the Doctor’s are still a little concerned about the fact he doesn’t cry so they’re having us come back for regular follow ups. But other than that, he’s very healthy.”
“That’s good, how is James handling fatherhood?”
“Well, you know James, he was so ecstatic when he learned it was a boy, someone to carry on the family name.”
“Mhmm, and how about you?”
“Hmm, what about me?”
“Come on, Linda, I know you wanted a girl. Aren’t you a little disappointed?”
“…Maybe a little, but still, Jesse is beautiful, and he’s my son. I love him so much, besides James and I will probably try again in a few month’s time. We want a big family, you know.”
“Of course, Linda, that would be wonderful.”

“Isn’t that the third one now, they really ought to stop. It’s clearly God’s plan for them not to bare any more children. He has already blessed them with a son.”
“I suppose, but still, that boy of theirs. Doesn’t he strike you as…a little odd?”
“How so?”
“I don’t know, he’s very excitable.”
“But aren’t all children his age that way?”
“Yes but, okay so I was in the butchers last Thursday, waiting for Mr Moore to finish prepping my order and the boy was just at the window staring in.”
“Well, maybe he was just curious”
“Yes but… well every time Mr Moore would chop up meat, he would… squeal.”
“Squeal?”
“Yes, like, as though he found his slicing up meat exciting. Don’t you think that’s strange.”
“Maybe a little, perhaps he’s one of ‘those’ types. You know, special.”
“Oh?... OH, oh I hadn’t thought of that. Yes, that makes sense, oh now I feel bad for assuming.”

“Linda, I’m going to be home late tonight.”
“Again? But James you’ve been home late every night this week.”
“Hehehehehe~”
“I know that, but there’s a massive backlog of paperwork that needs sorting through,”
“Can’t you get one of the assistants to do it?”
“Pfft, If only, the last time I did that. There was so many mistakes, it took us twice as long to fix than it would’ve taken had I done it myself. No, it’s best I do it.”
“Hehehe~ He dropped the bag on his foot! Haha~”
“I understand… I just… I wish you didn’t have to work so much. I could really use your help at home.”
“With what?”
“Hahahaaa, Papa look, his toe has swollen to the size of a balloon, hahaa!” Linda gave a pointed look towards there red-headed child, to which James followed her gaze. His eyes narrowed slightly at the their of their boisterous nine year old, giggled away hysterically. He moved away from the kitchen, striding towards the child,
“James-“ Linda protested uncertainly, only to be ignored by her husband.
“Oh papa! Are you coming to watch this with me, it’s a great episode, my fav-“ It was at that moment, James leaned over and shut off the TV.
“Papa!”
“That’s enough Jesse. You’re forever goofing around and making things difficult for your mother. You need to grow up, act like a man and help your mother around the house.”
“But papa!”
“No buts! It’s time you stopped clowning around and took some responsibility, you are always being a burden and making things hard for us. Well, I won’t stand for it anymore. No more silliness, Jesse, do you understand me? Or do I need to grab my belt?”
“No papa, anything but that, please, I understand! I’ll be a serious, I promise!”
“Good. I expect you to stand by that promise, Jesse, or there will be consequences.”

Jesse begrudgingly trudged through his garden. It was cold and dreary, like the world shared in his misery. He was frustrated, Papa and Mama always seemed to get annoyed. Especially when he had fun, they didn’t like it. They were so serious, all the time, they never wanted to play with him. He wasn’t allowed to bring home friends either, no that he had friends. People thought he was weird… just because of that one incident with Joey. Jesse didn’t mean for Joey to break his leg, he was being mean and trying to hurt Jesse. So Jesse pushed him back, he just so happened to trip, could Jesse really be blamed for doing it. Even if they had been standing at the top of the stairs.

The red-headed boy picked up the garden rake, and began to scoop up leaves, moving them towards the pile his mother had already started the day before. He would sweep and sweep, for the good part of an hour. Growing easily bored, his frustrating passing with each moment. He didn’t want to do this, he wanted to play. Why wouldn’t they just let him play?

The more he continued to rake the leaves, the angrier Jesse would find himself becoming, increasing frustrated and bored. Moving toward the back of the garden, he found a particularly large pile of leaves, not as big as the one’s he’d made but big enough that he could tell it was going to take even longer to finish now that he had to merge the two piled. As rage began to bubble, he would stop, staring at the pile of leaves he had made, for several moments he stared lost in thought. Until finally he raised the rake and began to bring it down on the pile of leaves, angry tears welling in the child's eyes as he attacked the pile with his rakes, letting out his frustrations on the defenceless foliole.

It felt good to hit the leaves, to let out a little anger. A little control. Again and again, the child struck the pile, as though it might make some difference to his circumstance. Suddenly, a high pitched squeal rang through the air causing Jesse to stop. Frozen in place as the squeals rang out, the leaves thrashing under where he rake was. He knelt down tentatively, brushing the leaves aside he would see the little mammal that was trapped under the rake. He spotted the small hole near it, realising it must have climbed out during his wild thrashing. Blood coating the small creature's fur, its eyes wide, chest lifting and dropping rapidly. It was a rabbit and he had hurt it. Badly.
