    I am the fire
    I am burning brighter
    Roaring like a storm
And I am the one I've been waiting for
    Screaming like a siren
    Alive and burning brighter

Finding himself in a most comfortable position atop a rather sizable tree, Ardere peered off into the city of Era. Things seemed so calm, almost serene. It was certainly one of the most beautiful cities his orange eyes had ever had the pleasure of gazing upon. Sitting with one leg straight, parallel to the branch, he kept the other bent in such a way that he could rest his arm on it. Letting out a slight sigh, his breath was not visible fortunately. The weather had been cold for so long, but now it was beginning to get nice and warm in some places, just how he liked it. Running pale leather covered fingers through his thick brown locks, the fire mage was waiting for someone to get close before heading into the city. Unfortunately he was not here for pleasure, he was here on business. The town of Era had experienced a series of heavy grievances in the past few weeks, murders and many other dark horrors. These murderers were not like the kind he tracked back in the Rune Knights, they were powerful mages. Some form of very dark magic was at work here, which as a god slayer was his specialty. Dealing with dark mages and the like, was also his specialty. However even with his talents, he would need some form of help in this city. From what he was told, there was an entire faction of dark mages lurking here. The Council had not been too clear, but he had what he needed.

They were to investigate the sewers, and the fire mage figured he had only one friend who could accompany him on this journey; Aiyana. The two had been on missions before, back when they were both in Sabertooth. They had a form of friendship and clicked in missions, hopefully that would stick in the time it had been since they last spoke. Letting out another sigh, he leaped down from his perch on the tree. Entering a more populated part of town, he looked onward to see an entrance into the sewers. It had been opened up, but was blocked off by yellow tape and orange caution cones. They must have been doing some form of construction here before the incidents, and had become a main entry point. Noticing a Knight standing by the entrance, Ardere gave a slight wave. He was fairly well known in the Rune Knights and council, seeing as he was the guild master of one of the largest guilds, and a former Rising Star and Rune Knight himself. Fame was not something he would dwell in, but it helped on missions occasionally. Just waiting for my partner now, shouldn't be too long. A familiar scent had crossed his nose, and he had a feeling the source would arrive shortly.

It was a sad day for Fiore when the town that the Magic Council was in was being hit with a string of murders, by sorcerers no less. Rumors and hearsay said that it was all a group of dark mages working together, calling the underbelly of the city their home. The local authorities of the city were calling for any wizards that could help, so long as they were not a dark mage, which meant the Guild Master of Pharaoh’s Call could easily come along for this job once she had been invited by an old friend she had met when she was in Sabertooth; Ardere Kasai. They had both become Guild Masters since she had last met him, boy did they have a LOT to catch up on.

The city of Era was beautiful from an aerial view; the Nevermore staff allowing her to transform and fly there instead of her usual celestial teleporting she normally did to get places while on her own. The flapping of wings let loose a small torrent of large, black, feathers before she dove towards the ground before transforming back into her celestial body and landed gracefully on the ground. The rest of her time in Era would be spent walking, something she really enjoyed if anyone ever bothered to ask her about it.

Up ahead was the sewer system entrance that the duo of slayers would be exploring to try and find the culprits of the murders running rampant. It was a shame the Rune Knights could not take care of all of it. Of course, when it was possibly a large group of mages in one location it was better to call in the stronger mages to handle it; though she would be a lot more comfortable bringing some of the others in her guild with her. That was not possible though, given most of them were novice mages that were just getting started; that and she did not want to endanger Mao either.

It did not take long to find Ardere waiting for her, his scent reaching her nose even as the nine tailed fox's eyes located him waving at a Rune Knight near the tunnel. "Long time, no see Ardere. Haven't you ever heard of writing a letter or giving a call?" The words were purely in jest, though it really was good to see him alive and well after so long of not hearing anything but rumors and second hand knowledge. "Is there anything else you know about this besides the general stuff I was told? Or are we going in blind and stopping this mess like we did with the werewolf problem and then in Pergrande?"

Turning to face the young woman walking his way, Ardere had noticed her scent from far away. It had changed somewhat, but it was still the same base smell that his recognized. The two had gained quite an amount of responsibilities in the past few months, but now it was time to act upon their most basic responsibility as a mage; protecting their world. I figured an invitation to a suicide mission sounded a lot more friendly. A slight smirk crossing his pale lips, the fire wizard gave her a quick hug. It was just to greet her after such a long time they had spent apart, going their separate ways from Sabertooth and into this dark world. Unfortunately, things only seemed to get darker as one walked into the abyss. Turning back to face the entrance of the sewer, it was a bit of an abyss down there. The lights from above shone in some places, but not enough. Letting out a calculated sigh, he unsheathed his sword before looking to the Knight and Aiyana. We don't have much time to waste. Whoever is doing this series of murders is likely a cult, high in numbers but powerful with dark magic as well. Our goal is to track them using our heightened senses, find their hideout and fight through the horde of mages, and take out their leader. If we find any kidnapped civilians or bodies down there, we'll bring them to the surface. Mr Knight, be our lookout just in case anything happens in the above world. I'll have a communications lacrima on me. Taking a deep breath, he held his sword out and the black corrupt flames burst across the crimson blade. These flames became so hot, that the normally faint red tint on them would brighten significantly. The blade was searing hot, but could also provide as a source of light. See you on the other side. There was a ladder leading down into the sewers, but rather than taking it he chose to leap down into the abyss. Feeling the wind rush through his brown hair for a moment, the armor on his body stayed tight. Landing down in some very shallow water, he created a shock wave upon landing. Some water was sent splashing across the sewer hall, and a slight dent was made in the ground. Quickly dashing to the right, this would allow his mission partner to travel down as well, if she so chose a more direct route as he did. Using the sword as a form of light, it gave him about three meters of sight. With his heightened senses he didn't exactly need it, but it would certainly help out. Waiting for his fellow mage to arrive, the Samurai took this time to observe the sewer for a moment. There was not much light down here at all, but he could sense the dark magic. Several disgusting scents attempted to deter him from finding the scent of the murderers, but he could make out a human scent. They were not getting away that easily, not after what they had done. The dark mages had to pay, and the town of Era would sleep easier at night.

The jest back made her realize how little he had changed since she had last seen him. Time may have been a strong enemy, but not one to the two mages that stood before each other in reunion. A smile would return his smirk as she returned the hug softly to finish their greeting of each other. Once their greetings were over they got to the job at hand, the more important thing for the moment other than personal greetings and small talk to catch up. Ardere gave a small briefing on what they were about to do, most of it confirming what had only been suspicions of hers as she flew her way here. After the talk was done, the woman would hear the Flame God Slayer take a deep breath before he ignited his sword into the corrupt flames she knew he held power over; a good source of light for them if they found they would need it down there.

It was not a surprise to her at all, as both of them had a lot of confidence and guts, as Ardere said he would see her on the other side before he simply jumped down into the sewer entrance. The man disappeared into the dark hole like something she had read in a book once, something down the rabbit hole, as the light from his sword dimmed and went away before she jumped and did the same. She heard the Rune Knight yell something at them, probably to stop before they kill themselves or something like it, as she began a quick descent into darkness as gravity pulled her down. Hair, clothing, and tails whipped around as she fell, the ground coming ever closer as she saw the light of his sword and then Ardere as she continued to fall. As she grew close enough to the ground, the maiden flung her tails out in all directions to slow her fall before landing gracefully down into a dent in the sewer ground.

A sensitive nose was not quite completely ready for the stench, though it didn't hit he stomach, as she made one complaint. ”Ugh. I knew it'd smell, but why do slayer senses need to make it worse.” It didn't overpower her senses completely, the intertwined scents slowly unraveling as her eyes adjusted to the darkness that they were in. ”Well, would you like to lead the way, my kind sir?” Her teasing was, as always, just playful as she walked closer to him so that nothing could pick one of them off for being too separated. With luck the two would find a clue, or someone, quickly and get to the bottom of the issue quickly.

Letting out a heavy sigh, he focused his senses on the dark mages rather than the horrid stench. You'll get used to it eventually. Ardere was quite experienced with his slayer senses, but even he had to admit the stench here was almost overwhelming. A high amount of focus and persistence was all he could do to dilute the smell. Holding his crimson blade up, it provided a good amount of light in a three meter radius, a decent amount in a five meter radius, and a faint amount in a ten meter radius. The sun had not set, meaning they might be able to catch their enemies off guard. Tracking them was an interesting matter, but between the two of them they should be able to find them within the hour. Nodding and beginning to take his stride into the sewers, he gripped the handle of his blade tightly.

Onward we go. There was no sense of fear, but he would be an idiot to not express caution or wariness in this mission. Their element was not the darkness, but it was their opponents'. The two guild masters had enough experience in taking out beings of the night to more than make up for it, but that did not mean they could be cocky. Gritting his teeth a bit, he observed as much of the sewers as he could. So far it appeared to just be normal sewer, as he did not notice any signs of a permanent base. If they were smart, their base of operations would be deep in the sewers near a collection center, meaning the waterfalls of sewage and water would cover any noises they made. If you hear any rushing water, let me know. I have a few ideas on where they might be. Side stepping quickly, he avoided a rather large rat. While they were considered vermin, he was not fond of killing animals who were not hostile towards him. Moving the sword back and forth at times, he also looked for markings on the walls. The dark mages had to have back up plans in case they got lost, or lost communications with the rest of the group. It was likely they had other forms of communication such as telepathy or lacrima, but anything could fail at any time.

Keeping his senses keen, he could hear rattling in the walls but it was faint. Whatever was moving around in their was fleet of foot. It could be anything, even rats. Fortunately the Era sewers were not the kind that had crocodile or alligator type beasts in their depths. This city was clean, but every city had it's waste. He couldn't blame the Rune Knights for refusing to come down here, it was pretty wretched. They had a long journey ahead, and they could only talk to pass the time and avoid the stench. So how are things back in the desert? If you don't mind me asking. Ardere was a fairly well informed man, not just from minor detective skills, but from his skilled information broker as well. It was always good to have connections, it kept one in the loop of the above ground and especially the underground.

"Let's hope so. I do NOT want  to smell this in full strength when trying to fight..." The woman hoped the man, whom was a slayer for a lot longer than she had been, was right about her getting used to it. Breathing through her mouth sounded like a better idea, but the thought of anything flying in make her stomach jerk her brain back onto breathing through her nose again. The celestial fox was sure she would be fine once she started focusing on the mission at hand; which from the steps Ardere were taking was right now! Words to back up his motions for it even as she followed close by.

Golden eyes would scan their surroundings, the woman not wanting to miss any small detail that may help them out with finding the culprits. She was glad it was not quite night time yet, the group could still be asleep or in the process of waking, and they held an advantage so long as they fought them at an inconvenient time. The two had also fought together on multiple occasions, making everything a bit more streamlined; save for the new magic of Aiyana's that made it even easier to deal with mages. There were no signs that were full proof of the mages that they might be looking for, but Ardere spoke up and mentioned to speak up if the celestial vixen heard rushing water. ”Will do. These fox ears are good for listening, that's for sure.”

The two seemed to separate as they both stepped in a different direction, a surprisingly large rat walking on through as it king of the sewers. The young woman had no issue with the rat, nor it with her, so there was no need to deal with it. There was no need to kill anyway, another reason why she was on this job. She had no intentions of letting anyone kill if she could stop it, even if it meant her getting hurt in the process. A rattling in the walls made her ears twitch, but it sounded like animals instead of people. It was a wonder that it was only rats, a true testament to the cleanliness of the city.

Ard's question was personal, coming from a guild master to another, but she had no issue with answering. ”All is going well so far out there. I found an abandoned city, quite the place to explore and center a base of operations, and have had a lot of interesting people join; including a monster that only says Sandile.”

The rest would have to wait, as afar off the sound of splashing water could be heard as something, or someone, ran towards them. ”I can finish after this, but sounds like we have company coming!”

Brandishing his blade, the fire mage kept his orange eyes fixated upon the walls and their many entrances. Drain pipes, sewer openings and the like gave way for a plethora of enemies to enter their area, and he had a feeling they would soon capitalize on that. Sandile eh? Kinda reminds me of this creature we have that only says "Mudkip". Perhaps they are of a similar breed. The guild of Infinity Hydra had gained a decent amount of members in the past few weeks, including one or two odd people or creatures. Fortunately his guild did not discriminate, thus they had amassed quite the force of interesting characters. But not as interesting as the base of operations the dark wizards had chosen here in the sewers, he had spotted a few runic markings along the walls as they passed it, but he could only stay on his guard for now. The crimson blade continued to glow bright as he held it up, providing enough light to see through the tunnels. He planned to use this searing hot blade to fight the enemies that came, Clarent proving to be a useful weapon against the forces of darkness. Letting out a slight sigh, his eyes darted back and forth as he heard some slight splashing noises. There was faint walking in the tunnels, they were a bit far away, but their presence was only growing closer and closer to the two mages. Seems like you're right, get ready to throw down here Ai. Tightening the straps on his armor, Ardere slid over to the side. Scraping sparks against the walls, he lit some of the more flammable gases in the sewer on fire, creating a small wall of searing hot flames in the tunnel. It was not enough to harm Aiyana or the fire mage, but it would reveal the presence of their enemies and give a slight wall of flame. Avoiding the explosive force, he used his pyrokinesis to ensure it did not make it to either of them. Let's see what we're dealing with here. Clutching the blade tight, tattoos of flames revealed themselves on the right side of his face and neck. Gritting his teeth slightly, he could smell the cultists or whatever they considered themselves getting closer. There was definitely a number of them, with their knives and dark magic. He was really getting a cultist vibe, but all he needed to know was that they were the enemy, and they were murdering innocents. Sliding a foot back into a fighting stance, he heard the flapping of cloaks and the beating of hearts. It appeared they were upon them, and they only had the choice of fighting. Confined in these sewers, he made sure to keep in mind the use his flames would have here, stuck in a tight space.

So Infinity Hydra had a similar creature to the one Pharaoh’s Call had, interesting! Maybe there were more of them in the world than just the two, possible even hundreds of different kinds! One day she might have to scour the world and document them for fun, after all she was a Celestial Spirit and had plenty of time to do so. Now, however, they had other things to do!

Ardere agreed with her about them having company, the very people they meant coming into view to reveal themselves. Ard, I don't know about you but I'm not killing if I can help it. I can handle any that come at me, but expect a majority to come after the guy with a flaming sword.”

Her words were proven true as about seventy five percent of the group focused on the man lighting up the sewers, preparing themselves and their magic while also drawing weapons and getting ready to fight. ”I would tell you to just leave, but now it is too late. We can't have people knowing where we are, let alone a group of mages working with the government!” The man did not seem to be a leader, but he did seem to be stronger than a good chunk of the others; as did a few more of them.

The five enemies that came at her, two being of the stronger batch, ran at her with a multitude of weapons, seeming to want to wait on casting magic so they could get a grasp on what she could do first; poor choice. ”Memory, bring out Bacor and show these people what the undead feel about their death magic.” Those words would bring forth an enemy most people would be terrified of, but the death mages must have thought of it as just an illusion. Instead of trying to take out the beast that had appeared, all five mages ignored what would be the worst thing for their day. Bacor, seeing that they had no fear for him, did his signature move; a summoning of five weaker zombies under his control. These zombies hit as hard as one would expect, knocking one of the unwary mages to the ground before the other mages turned to fight back on them. Within moments of them being summoned three of the weaker mages had gotten knocked out of the fight, and only two of the zombies gone; their bodies faded away into nothingness as they were but memories in physical form. With those down, it made it quite the one sided fight for Aiyana to deal with. Bacor, three zombies, and her against three other mages that were either on par or weaker than her!

So you can throw me to the wolves
    Tomorrow I will come back
    Leader of the whole pack
    Beat me black and blue
    Every wound will shape me
Every scar will build my throne

Clutching his sword tightly, Ardere's brows formed an arch downward before he spoke his words. Don't worry, I only kill if I'm forced to. Which is rare. The words sailed smoothly out of his mouth, with an intense confidence acquired from many years on the battlefield. He was not very fond of ending another human being's life, or most wildlife, but it was monsters that he could easily kill. Every now and then, he found an enemy who looked human, spoke human words and had a human body, but on the inside they were just another monster. Those were the people, if they could be called that, that he could kill. While these cultists may appear as such, they were blinded by the words of another man, unable to discern between right and wrong. This was not punishable by death, but severe pain surely. Alright boys, let's rumble. Staring down the horde of enemies rampaging towards his current location, he watched the water at the bottom of the sewer move in accordance to their attack patterns. Listening to each of their breaths and heart beats, he could tell from this close that they were quite aggressive and harboring malicious intent within their blades. His senses were quite ken, but unfortunately he had to be this close to even guess as to how they would attack. Fortunately, close range was his specialty. They were within meters of him, coming in an arrow head formation. This meant he could pick and choose his targets. A poor formation choice to attack a samurai trained in the arts of defense, but he held no cockiness against an enemy so high in numbers. In fact, he viewed this as quite interesting. Taking a deep breath, it was on.

The first mage came at him with an extensive array of dark-embedded weapons, but the fire mage chose to side step his attack. Using the intense speed he possessed, Ardere struck next to four ligaments, causing blood to gush from the wounds. The man was not dead, but he laid next to the water severely injured. The searing hot blade in his hands had slightly cauterized the wounds. It was still a blade after all, and blood was ensured, but with the blade not at full capacity, he had not fully cauterized it. This had been on purpose, to prove a point. Channeling the fiery energy within the blade, it became fully searing hot. He could easily slice through a limb like this, but the wizards attacking him had no time to figure that out, as they had charged in blindly. Dashing backwards, the guild master deflected two dark throwing knives before spinning around. Slashing open his two enemies at the lower legs, he took some cuts to his right and left arm. Due to his fire body, the cuts closed up fairly well, but something was off about the next attacker, a sense of death emanating from him. Slashing open the backs of the two men who had their legs severely injured, they were finished off. As his wounds closed up, the brown haired samurai prepared to fight his next opponents.
