    'I hate this place already'

Speaking out loud, Frederick basically projected all his feelings he had in one single sentence. While he gazed upon the large stone walls that blocked everyones vision into the maze. Even from a far on a hill one could only see it's structure and its many endless corner, yet never an exit.
What was most noticeable about this mega structure was that it spanned the entire valley. Meaning that the maze was extensive enough to keep you venturing it for months, if not years.

A large sigh escaped Frederick, cursing himself silently for even choosing this job back at the guild. Sure the job seemed easy enough at the time, and judging by the state of the pamphlet. That was almost falling apart from old age, it wasn't going to be picked any time soon. Making it the perfect job for Frederick to escape the guild, and its endless chatter of overly friendly mages. Even if it was for a small time.

There was also off course the sudden reappearance of an old time member back at the guild. A former guild master even, namely Zenshin. The silver haired mage, that has made Sabertooth in what it was today. But more importantly then that, the very man that gad ended and saved Frederick's life at the same time.
That alone was more then a reason for Frederick the spend some time away from the guild, and he did it the only way he knew how. By taking up a job, without even looking properly what its contents entitled.

'At least back at Savage Skull I had a legion at my disposal....that would've come in really handy right now'

Almost thinking out loud, Frederick understood the harsh reality of being a mere member was all about. Instead of being a powerful guild master of the most notorious guild Fiore has ever known. There he had soldiers and mages, willing to follow his every command. As long as it meant climbing higher in the Savage Skull hierarchy, they were willing to commit even the vilest of atrocities.
But now he was alone, no guild to rule, no subjects to command. Hell he'd even had to get his breakfast grub as a commoner. In the main mess hall of the guild, eating whatever the petty excuses for a cook had mashed together this time.

Frederick sighed again, and reached simultaneously for something tucked away in one of his inner pockets. Slowly he pulled it out, on to reveal to the daylight the very job sheet he had pulled off from the guilds board. Carelessly, judging by the torn that ruined the title.
'Now let's see if there is anything more to this job'

    Aedre

    Death's Right Hand

The enchanted maze beckoned the lady into its pulsing heart; so did her sense of duty, a need to complete the job that she had undertaken. But, how could I resist the lush Garden of Eden that sprawled and spun its cobwebs on the thick walls of the Labyrinth? The deep, haunting ballad of its ancient song called out to her. As old as Adam, the maze was still steeped in plushness and opulence - perhaps because it was majorly untouched for aeons, the sea-green foliage had been allowed to lace its walls without question. With a light heart, she'd plunged into the over-arching vault of leaf and limb. It was exactly as she had envisioned it when she read that frail parchment for the first time. It spoke of a deep maze, some treasure, a senile old client, admist other crap. None of that caught the white-haired woman's attention and she was about to drop it and move forth to a more sensible job when she heard his name - for the first time in what seemed to be years.

"Lord Frederik. Yeah, that crazy fellow has taken the quest in the Labyrinth." A man in a group of five others muttered, generating a small wave of excitement in his company. They huddled a bit closer, their tones plummetting down to whispers that she couldn't catch.

The paper was mericlessly ripped off the communal request board - it had suddenly attained the value of gold, 'Finally. A trace of you, you elusive vermin.'

The exquisiteness of the dawn’s light had not yet lanced to the lush, green sward. Because of this, hoods of black shadow hung in the groves. A sepulchral silence hung in the air, nothing stirred, nothing shone, nothing sang. Except the sturdy flaps of her pearl-white cloak, of course. The woman was making steady progress, her boots clacking headstrong against the cobbled stone ground, while a heavy blade was clasped in her right hand. It was almost a part of a defense mechanism, since her mind was rambling on with memories of the so-called Lord Frederik. He was the man who got her into the ancient guild of Savage Skull, back when he was its sole leader. The one man who called the shots in the depths of that shadowy guild. Then he'd disappeared in the blink of an eye, leaving the guild's reigns in her hand - thus pretty much trapping her in that grim citadel within Spooky Forest; for chaos among its members ensued while he frolicked in the light - in Sabertooth; if the whisperings were to be trusted.

She'd gotten Harrigan to run the guild within the next few months and everything was back to well and good. But, for some reason, the hooded individual remained in the back of her mind. 'Why did he leave?' It was a question Aedre wished to get answered. Perhaps, today would be the chance.

Her thoughts were romping like usual, when the white-haired lady caught the first glimpse of him, a hooded figure outlined against the walls that made the Labyrinth of Mystery; bent-necked on something in his hands, with his back turned to her. The grip around her blade's hilt tightened, as she approached him till she was a few meters away, "Are you the mage who undertook Mister Ulysses Arturo's request?"

Deception is a grifter's most spectacular talent.

     Wandering Soul
The entire maze had something rather mystique hanging over it, well mystique was not the right word. Eerie was probably the better choice of words here. As there was an utter creeping silence around the place, that should get on everyones nerves. Even the ones such as Fredericks.

There was no bird in the sky, no cackling or grunting from a nearby animal. Not even the rustling of leaves from the wind. As if everything was put to a standstill, a moment in time that everything had stopped moving. Yet without any physical evidence that it could be. As there was no bird in the sky that could prove such a bold theory.

That very silence was being broken by a rather mundane sound, yet still very devastating at this very moment. Heels that could only belong to a woman's attire would make a clacking sound that echoed through out the entire valley, breaking the silence as a stone brick would shatter a glass window.
And as it approached so came a malicious feeling, like predator that was breathing down your neck.

Frederick could only phantom that very feeling as a viper that was ready to strike at its prey, the moment it even would try to retaliate. A thought that definitely crossed Frederick's mind, as a dark aura would engulf part of his fists and wrists. The same moment the stranger would tighten her grip around the hilt of her blade.

She was close now, Frederick didn't have to hear the sound of her steps to know that now. As her presence was as vivid to him as the light of day. In his mind, he would envision it as he dark purple, yet feminine light that was about to clash with his own emptiness. A dark substance that was more creeping that it was overwhelming right now.
Then that moment passed and the clacking of heels came to an halt, just a few meters away from him. Far enough to be away from any close combat strike, yet close enough to rush a deadly yet precise attack.

    'Who is asking wench...'

His voice was harsh, and showed the immediate hostility Frederick always carried with him. While in the meantime he slowly turned around to face whoever was inquiring him.

Much to his surprise, his eyes laid upon a young woman. With silver white hair, just like his savior had. Only longer, almost reaching down to her hips. It fitted in nicely by her entire choice of attire. A clothing style to brought out a womans physique to the fullest.
But there was also something out of place, namely her left arm. Well for Frederick it was the left side right now. Was entirely replaced by a mechanical contraction that appeared to be embodying the form of an arm. Yet besides the structure it didn't had any further resemblance to that of an human arm. Instead of a pale skin tone, it was clad black. From the shoulder all the way down the finger tips. Which in turned was more like a claw then an actual hand.

Yet that wasn't the most off-putting, in fact the arm seemed to fit her for some reason. No all together this could be considered a gorgeous un tamed beauty. A pure gem among the opposite gender. If it wasn't for her eyes, or better yet. 'Eye'. Which had a cold stare that if it were possible, could freeze you right where you were standing.

    Aedre

    Death's Right Hand

She'd heard the crude choice of words uttered by the hooded man, and the conceited curve of a smirk danced upon her lips, 'Things haven't changed much, huh?' The thought eased into her mind, as her expectation of a goody-two-shoes and radically changed man shattered to pieces. He was still the hard-mouthed man who exuded an aura of a person deep in darkness, pain and agony. As if those eyes had experienced the cold, hard truth of life and accepted it so brilliantly - that it was worse than the perspective of a pessimist. It gave him an ambiance that was much akin to his magic; one that made you sick in the guts but at the same time, you couldn't get enough of its power. A jaw-dropping combination - one that vied and screamed for attention, but its unfortunate owner seemed to shy away from it all.

And as he turned, she watched his dark eyes implore her appearance, but find nothing more of interest than the prosthetic limb that had replaced her left arm. Perhaps its was his intensive gaze, or his presence itself, it made the woman realize the lack of receptors or nerves there - the fact that she pretty much sensed nothing more than weight with that hand. She flexed the metal fingers almost instinctively, as fresh memories of raw pain rolled up into her mind. That evening in the Haunted Village was eventful, to say the least. She swept away from it all in a heartbeat though, settling her foot sturdily in the current scenario, "Like what you see? Its a prosthetic." Aedre stated, her voice a calm, flat contralto.

Her single visible iris, a pool of blood-red, zoned in on the dark hue that had enveloped the man's hands and her lips formed a perfect circle, realization dawning a tad bit later, 'I'm not the only hostile one.' The next second, the blade held in her dominant arm disappeared into nothingness, while an age-old parchment, frail and withering showed up in the sharp grasp of her metal fingers.

"I mean no harm." She spoke, using words whose authenticity she couldn't guarantee herself. Did she hate this man enough to hurt him? Or was it just curiosity with a lacing of dislike. Hate; just like its opposite, was a strong word, after all. She was brought up with the idea that it needs to be used only in exclusive situations. This, by far, seemed to miss that exclusiveness. She took a confident step ahead, testing the waters to check if he would issue an attack, but there was no such hint from his side - which she took advantage of. The paper would start levitating the next moment, carried on an invisible base that made its way to the man. Though it was visually alarming, any mage could feel magic's pressing presence weighing down on the air around the parchment. It was just a little trick that the white-haired lady could pull with her powers.

"We can call it a partnership, I suppose." She muttered, a smirk gracing her lips, while Lord Frederik could observe the job sheet that she'd just handed over to him.

Off course it was prosthetic, anyone could see that. Well not anyone right away, but to those with more knowledge of the world understood from its slender build. That it was for more then some armor piece. No how the joints were connected, as the flexibility of the finger movement. Revealed it all.
Yet it wasn't the fact that she wore a prosthetic that caught his interest in her appearance, it was the build of that very arm. As it was more complex and refined as Frederick had ever seen in substitutes for limbs. One could say it even had a sense of femininity, as its build seemed to be a perfect fit with girls own body.

Surprisingly enough the girl was willingly enough to lower her weapon first, which Frederick didn't return as he kept his defensive distance from her. His eyes continuously focused on her, hoping to catch any glimpse of an indication that would result in an attack. After all seeing her dematerialize her weapon so quick, it was safe to assume she could easily summon it as fast, if not faster.

'no harm huh, her entire posture suggests otherwise' Frederick thoughts were and easy observation, that even though she may have lowered her weapon her entire being still screamed the opposite. It was a trait only those who've seen battle to many times could carry. That even when they may look at ease, they were on guard, always ready to go for the kill. With emotions whatsoever. If necessary those people could even cut the throat of a 'loved one' within in the blink of an eye, without a hint of remorse.

Next a piece of paper appeared, an old looking parchment that would float several inches above her hand. The very one she just used to held a weapon with.
With ease she manipulate the space around it, and would send it over to Frederick. Who still as cautious as a deer was keeping his eyes focussed on her. Looking past the parchment that came his way.

Until it was with in hands reach, he broke off his gaze and forcefully grabbed the piece of paper out of the air. Enough so, that it could've fallen apart, considering its age.

'Tch' a slight disapproving sound escaped Fredericks mouth. Upon realizing that this job was indeed a bit hard to handle alone, even for one as him. But still, he preferred to work alone. In fact it was better most of the time, that way he didn't had to take anyone else in consideration. And he could just go his own pace. Yet, the jobs contents revealed that this job was anything but a solo job. Forcing Frederick to actually consider the womans proposal.

'Fine.. a partnership it is then... as long as you don't get in my way that is' he finally responded to girl, who revealed a smirk on her face. The moment she probably noticed that Frederick realized that he couldn't pull this off alone. If he wanted to or not.

    Aedre

    Death's Right Hand

The man's defensive stance didn't falter by an inch, even though Aedre had ridden herself of her blade; he was still as wary as ever. In fact, more so than the last time she had the chance of knowing and observing him up and close. Lord Frederick had always been the fierce embodiment of cold and elusive and distant - and now, among people with warm hugs and welcoming smiles, he was an oddity. Perhaps that sort of environment had made him more aloof than ever, a defensive mechanism of the instincts. If anything, she felt a pang of pity for him - not the condescending type of sympathy - but of the shared experience of not belonging. Standing out and attracting attention when you slid away from it was one thing, but not feeling at home was another. It was an insatiable itch.

But, to be perfectly honest, even if she had dropped her sword into nothingness, the white-haired woman was no less cautious of the hooded man before her. For if she knew anything about him, it was his past, his history, who he was and how he used to be. The treacherous tendency of dark mages never dwindles, even if they switch sides on the alignment spectrum and Aedre was aware of that and how it almost becomes second nature. Within the shadows of Fiore, being sharp and deceitful was a survival skill - it kept your heart beating in every sense of the word. Any turn in the corner might be you last, just because you chose to place the fickle idea of trust on someone. Perifidiousness was not an art though, it was a common skill that the most paltry members of the most insignificant guilds and groups developed after a while. It came as a easily as breathing to them - and due to such commonplaceness, it became a game, a competition of who traps who. It was almost a safe bet to say that the dark mages were more prudent with their own mates than the people on the other end of the river.

'He still hasn't lost that shine, that edge, that qui vive.' She concluded, while observing Frederick click his tongue in annoyance. He shied away from company, and Aedre knew that - and that knowledge only drove her amusement further, for the realization dawned; she was almost a bully. Intentionally or unintentionally, she'd dragged herself to that position for this man.

"Fine.. a partnership it is then... as long as you don't get in my way that is." He stated, obviously after realizing that the task he had set himself upon alone, wasn't really a solo dance. A sly curved worked its way up her lips, as she nodded, "Not like you can pull it off unassisted, mister-leave-me-alone." She stated, mirth gracing the words in equal amounts as teasing did. If she was becoming the villain in this partnership, she might as well enjoy it.

"We need to head to Mister Arturo's house first~" The female cooed, as she whipped past the forlorn soul of a man.

     Wandering Soul
It was no secret that Frederick probably already disliked the woman the first moment he laid eyes on her, but when she showed the perfect example of poking the dragon even more. That gut feeling in Frederick only grew larger, combined off course with a fair dose of agitation.

It was off course a play of dominance, an act to taunt the opponent and put him in submission through words alone. Only so one could establish itself as the leading entity. It was actually a trait Frederick was all to familiar with, as he himself used it quite often on the younger generation of mages. Insulting them, even threatening them made them fear him. And through it acknowledge him as a stronger being that needs to be obeyed.

However the first act of that battle was decided and won by his newly declared partner, as she not only casually insulted him. But also took the lead as she walked passed him. Suggesting, or rather commanding that they had to head towards the clients house first.

Annoyed that he was, Frederick let out another click with his tongue. Loud enough for the woman to hear and probably amuse her some more. A rather bad flaw of Frederick, who wore his attitude on his sleeve at times as this.

Yet even though he was clearly annoyed, and already cursing the woman inside his head. He still silently obeyed and turned around. Following her to Arturo's house. Which turned out to be nothing more then a shabby shack build against one of the walls of the labyrinth.
While gazing down on it, Frederick started to wonder the authenticity of the job request. I mean surely someone who lives in an excuse for an house like this, couldn't offer such a bountiful reward right? It was either his entire lifesaving he was offering, or he had some treasure stowed away. However from by the looks of it, Frederick highly doubted that. As around the house was a small garden that obviously implied that this man was living from his own harvest mostly.

    'Off course'

Speaking out loud with a sigh, Frederick already dreaded the fact that their client had managed to lure them here. And maybe that was the reason why the request sheet was so old and frail. That the mages who had come here, encountered the same dilemma and decided it was better to leave then to risk their lives for no reward at all.

    'Maybe we should turn around.'

Yet before his new partner even could get a word in, the fragile door that was crookedly placed in the building. Slowly opened, with the creaking sound of old wood scraping over the ground. While in the revealing opening stood and old and rather weird man. Dressed in a variety of clothing what just didn't fit with each other.

'Oh my, it's been long since I had guests' he said happily. While revealing toothless smile.

    Aedre

    Death's Right Hand

The sound of pique, and perhaps one that was even laced with vexation reached her ears, causing Aedre to almost let out a throaty chuckle - but she restrained it, not wanting to piss off the combustible piece of a man and making him walk out of the partnership in question. She was allowed to tickle the dragon, but not let it bite her head off. A subtle art, indeed. And to think that at one point in the roll of time, this man was her superior; someone whose words stood for orders and whose sight was outlined by respect and commendation. It was almost funny how his change in loyalties affected the white-haired woman's opinions about him. It made her come upon the ugly truth that reverence was oh-so-fickle and conditional. The change in attitude from approbation to such domineer on her part was acutely drastic.

Ulysses Arturo's house was a frail and dilapidated mess - the kind that gives off the vibe that the slightest jerk will kick it to the mud. It looked almost ancient, held together in the most pathetic way with no guarantee that it will stand its ground for witnessing the next ray of sunshine. The roof was punctured with gaping holes, the walls had little rodent-openings near the bottom and the vines and creepers of the maze had spun its web all over it. In fact, it seemed that the trailing plant did it more good than anything and actually held it all in place. And just like Frederick, even Aedre was doubting if they'd been lured into a hollow joke - for this house didn't speak of the plump reward that the job sheet screamed of. Even though it was a contemptible habit to guess a person's demeanor based on their address, the woman couldn't help but think of a run-the-mill swine poking his head out of that paper-thin door.

"Maybe we should turn around." Frederick stated, and before she could reply, the hatch of the house opened and out came a wrinkled face with a small bunch of scraggly-white hair on his crown. A toothless-grin broke apart his lips at the expression of joy in visitors. Aedre just blinked in silence for a second, just a bit intrigued by his sparkling blue eyes that magically promised of passionate knowledge. Almost everything about the man, with his hunched figure, the rough and thick eyebrows was despicable - but his eyes compelled her to stay, "Let's just wait for a second." She muttered to the hooded male next to her, just in case he tore off from the place, fueled by his contempt.

Turning back to the old fellow, Aedre started, "We're the-" But she never finished the sentence as the man broke her off, "Don't just stand there like statues, come in, come in." His voice was exuberant, a genuine happiness of human contact. The woman sighed, torn between backing out like Frederick suggested or following her gut feeling and walking into the shabby little house and giving the old fellow a listen.
