Chris left the Oak Temple with a smile on his face; tucking the sheet of papers into his pocket. While Infinity Hydra had the amazing magic using R.A.I.N.E. he still felt better writing his ideas down on paper. That and he didn’t think the care takers of the temple would look kindly on using magic within the hallowed halls. Still he managed to get a lot of research done for future ARMs.

He walked down the stairs and headed for the train station to take him back to the guild. More than anything he wanted to enter the more restricted parts of the library to learn more about the different kinds of Holder magic throughout history, but there was always someone near the door leading in. He was tempted to just teleport through, but again felt that the care takers would not take kindly to him undermining their jobs. Still he got a lot of information.

Half way to the train station Chris heard a distant explosion coming from the east side of the city. He waited a moment more before a second explosion followed the first. A slight grimace appeared on his face as he reached in and dug out a single piece of paper. On it was a job he copied down from the guild board since he was in the area. It described a fire mage that was running wild on random days in Oak Town. Looks like this might be one of those random days. Without hesitation he turned and ran towards the sounds of destruction and panic.

When he arrived he slowed to a stunned stop at the destruction happening in the market. Fire was everywhere; burning businesses, homes, and worse people. It was loss of life that he couldn’t comprehend, as people were running in random directions trying to flee the destruction. And in the center of it all a lone man stood; the flames casting a menacing light upon his face. And his eyes were the scariest of all, as they were completely blank.

Shaking himself out of his stupor Chris ran forward as fast as he could. He had to stop this mad man before any more people lost their lives. He didn’t have far to run, but he skidded to a stop when he realized the man wasn’t alone. Several people stood around him; also not seeming to see the destruction that they were causing. All looked to be fire mages, as each seemed to shoot random fireballs at the area surrounding them. A group of three seemed to notice that Chris wasn’t fleeing and turned to face him.

A slight grimace came to Chris’s lips as he held out his right hand; the light from the fires dancing on the ring he wore. It looked like it was made of silver with a silver eye welded on top. He really wanted to use the sword, but fire can’t put fire out. Neither could lightning, but it was better than fire. ”Weapon ARM. Electric Lance!” The ring shattered into pieces of light that reformed into a light blue quarterstaff. On the tip a series of lightning bolts frozen in mid flight give it the appearance of a spearhead. He watched in horror as the fire mage in the middle held up his arm towards a group of fleeing people. No!

Chris watched in horror as two fireballs flew forth and struck to of the fleeing people in the back. The impact threw them off their feet, and flames quickly engulfed their bodies. Neither moved from the ground where they lay.

He only had a moment to realize what happened when the trio of fire mages reached him. Letting out a small yelp he jumped back as one of the mages threw a fireball at him. It looked weak compared to the man in the middle. Cursing under his breath Chris called out again. ”Nature Arm. Guardian Shield!” The ring in his ear changed to a bright red color before shattering into shards of light. It them reformed into a transparent shield that hovered nearby. Gritting his teeth he charged forward swinging the spear.

The three mages looked stunned as Chris charged forward, as if unable to realize what was going on. Chris only had a moment to realize something was off before he struck the first mage. The young man flew from the metal with an audible grunt, and collapsed to the floor in a heap. The other two mages jumped backwards; both bringing up their hands to try and bathe Chris in flames. The shield moves swiftly to block both attacks to protect Chris. A slight smile came to his lips as he charged the closest one. He was so glad he made the ARM.

The one he charged backpedaled quickly and brought up his hands to throw another stream of fire. Before he could focus his magic enough Chris caught him in the stomach with the butt of his spear. The man went down with a loud groan, as he sunk to the ground clutching his middle. For some reason Chris decided to take him out of the fight instead of kill him, though he didn’t know why. Something tickled the back of his mind; something that he noticed but couldn’t place his finger on it.

He didn’t have much time to think about it, as a fireball erupting at his back brought him back to the task at hand. The third mage was trying to shoot him with fireballs, but the shield protecting Chris blocked them with ease. Turning around Chris charged this man as well, bringing the butt of his spear up between the man’s legs. He cringed in sympathy as the man folded on the ground, obviously unable to continue the fight for a long time.

Turning Chris noticed the other three surrounding the man in the middle looking at him with detached expressions. Like the man and the three who he just fought; these also had a blank look in their eyes. It was almost as though they couldn’t see what was going on around them, and the thought chilled him. As one they moved away from the man throwing fireballs and approached Chris cautiously, as if they were starting to take the young man more seriously than their weaker counterparts. Chris glanced at the man now standing alone. He was facing a cart of goods where a couple seemed to be hiding. A look of horror came to Chris’s eyes as the man raised his hands to cast another spell, and he rushed forward to try and stop it.
