    History/Story
    History:
    Before Sabertooth
Ryo was born to a relatively normal family. He had a loving father that taught him the way to behave, and a loving mother that showed him all the love that a growing child could ever need. However, his family wasn’t exactly what one would call well-off. More often than not he went hungry, and his clothes were of poorer quality than other children’s, or just other peoples in general. His father worked as hard as he could, but with increasingly poor health between him and his wife the money he made just wasn’t enough to sustain a proper life. Ryo didn’t like to see his family suffer so he started to do whatever he had to in order to give them more things in life. He would work odd jobs for local shop keepers in order to obtain any kinds of goods or money that would aid in his family. He kept nothing for himself and gave it all to his father who was extremely proud of his son for working so hard.

However, even with these acts of dedication it still wasn’t enough. Poor health, and poor living conditions caused his mother to finally succumb to sickness. With his loving wife gone Ryo’s father was unable to cope with the loss and he died of a broken heart. This left Ryo alone on the streets now that he was homeless. Ryo refused to submit and let himself be ended here instead he kept fighting to survive. He moved in with a family friend and worked for him in his little shop as a payment for the refuge he was now receiving. Truth be told he lived much better in those days. Of course while he lived there he continued to steal and take what he thought he needed or wanted, and he was rarely caught. Most people around town knew who he was and what his story was; so they didn’t press for any serious disciplinary actions, but they did reclaim their property. Over time he slowly grew up learning the trade that was available to him. His foster father owned a small shop dabbling in everything, but the real money came from the gambling that was done in the basement of the store.

It was these activities that Ryo began to take a great interest in. He wasn’t the only child that the man had, of course his own son was much older than Ryo, and it was he who began to teach Ryo all about the gambling world. Especially the card games that Ryo seemed to love even more than the others. It wasn’t long before Ryo was showing off his card prowess at the tables as a dealer. The patrons thought it was a cute little gimmick, but Ryo was one of the best dealers the man had, and soon it was a permanent job for him. He worked there for several years and when he reached nine years-old he found someone who was very strange to him. Shortly after his ninth birthday a woman began to arrive at the casino, and started to play at the tables Ryo was working. It didn’t matter what game, or what table, but she always showed up first, and was the last person to leave the table every time. After a month of this behavior Ryo finally told his current caretaker and he waited until she was leaving before he confronted her. It didn’t take him long to get the answer out of her and he went and talked to Ryo. He told Ryo that the woman was a mage and she wanted him to become her apprentice. It would mean that he would have to leave to devote himself to the training, but Ryo didn’t need another second of thought and jumped on it like it was the best thing in the world.

The woman helped Ryo pack up his clothes although he didn’t have many, but she still helped him pack up his clothing and all his possession. Once he was packed up, sadly his whole life fit into a rather small backpack; they set off for the outskirts of town. As they walked Ryo’s teacher introduced herself as Amelia and told him that she was a card mage. She also continued to tell him that she had created her own brand of card magic, and now she felt that it was perfected and it was time for her to take on an apprentice and teach her brand of magic to the next generation. She had chosen him because of not only how young he was, but because he was so fascinated by playing cards and card games. She had picked him out the moment she heard about him, and the coming to see him was just scouting his love and dedication for the cards. When they arrived at Amelia’s home the training began in full. It first started with getting Ryo to his ideal weight. True he had food, but he was still incredibly skinny as the man had been sharing his food with him, and he barely had enough for the two he was feeding. So the first year of the training was getting Ryo to work out to build muscle, and to eat the appropriate amounts so he could maintain his weight and be much healthier in his life.
Once he was around the weight that Amelia thought he should be at she began his actual training. His first stage of the training lasted a year and this year was spent training his mind, and his dexterity with his hands. His mind was spent memorizing cards in the deck, learning to count them, learning to know which card he would draw next. Sadly to say he never truly mastered this, but he had an almost good guess of what cards he would draw. His dexterity was manipulating the cards in his hands and around his body. In order to train this dexterity Amelia taught him every single card trick in the book, as well as every card game she could remember, as well as the various different shuffling techniques. She continued this training for the whole year until he was ten years old, and this was all to make sure that his cards wouldn’t be able to fail him in a time when he really needed them. On his eleventh birthday he had to pass several different tests all of which were encompassing the entirety of the year’s training.

He performed and he succeeded in his tests showing his skill his teacher Amelia smiled softly at him and looked at him with a soft clap of her hand. She told him how proud she was of him, and then she pulled out a belt, and a hat. The hat was a broad-brimmed cowboy hat that had an ace of spades in the band, and a set of four cards as a band pin. The belt held three decks of cards, and the belt buckle was four cards made of bronze baring the four different suits. She gave these to him as not only birthday presents, but presents to show that he was ready for the real training. It was time he started on his magical studies. He put on the belt, and the hat starting what would be his future uniform. Once he was dressed they began his magical training now. Amelia had him read spell book after spell book. Books of magic history, magic practices, and much more; Ryo read the books that he was given and took several tests that his teacher taught him. It wasn’t long before he mastered all the tricks that the books had to teach him. He could now summon his own magic energy at will and coat even regular every day playing cards with them. His teacher was very impressed that he learned this so quickly, but it was hardly enough. She made sure that he could do it no matter what and spent the next year teaching him to control his magic.

Now that he had full control over his basic magic Amelia needed to teach him how to use it in tandem with the magical cards she used. She first taught him about the element deck that he would have to use. She first introduced him to the various elements. Each one very unique, but also she showed him the very different pictures that would show him what elements it belonged to. The pictures varied from a campfire, to a volcano, a rain drop, to a waterfall. All of these various different pictures still acted the same universally, but they were all very pretty to look at. The first few lessons with these element cards were Ryo putting his magic into the card to allow its own magic to activate. She started him with the Fire element cars the first time he did this and the card ignited he became scared and dropped the card. This caused Amelia to laugh. She picked up her own card and performed the same action. As the flames burned in her hand she gently stroked the burning card against her cheek showing that the magic she was teaching him could never hurt him as the caster. With this bit of knowledge in hand Ryo repeated the step and found that the flames wouldn’t burn him no matter how long he held the card. He simply had to trust in his magic and all would be well for him. He no longer feared the magic, and quickly made sure he could master all the element cards for their use.

The element cards alone were not enough however, he then had to start learning how to use what his teacher Amelia called the “Uses” deck. These cards were a lot more versatile in their construct. The black cards were made for offensive use with the elements. The white cards were used for Defensive purposes once more in tandem with the element cards. Amelia made it all too clear that these cards could not be used alone. She didn’t need to explain why, but that is all he needed to know is that in order to use the black and white deck he had to pair them with the element deck cards. He was curious as to why the Black and White cards couldn’t be used by themselves, but he knew that he wouldn’t get an answer out of his teacher. The next two years he spent trying to time his cards, and predict the cards that he drew. Still, this was beyond his reach; this magic was far too wild, and versatile to be tamed or predicted, but when he could use it; the use was to powerful effect. He spent so much time trying to learn the magics he could use with the two decks, but even as he learned the actual spells he used were at random always. His teacher impressed with his work and dedication gave him yet another gift. This was the coat that he has worn ever since. True it has been tailored many times since then, but always it was is and will always be at the base the same coat.

With this new coat adorned he continued his training, but his teacher now told him that his time with her was reaching its end. Soon he would learn all that she could teach him at this stage in his power level. Soon it would be time for him to leave her in order to seek his own destiny and grow stronger. She promised him that she would never leave, and when he became able to master new spells then all he would need to do is return to her, and receive more teachings from her. He felt a sense of calm and relaxation knowing there was more for him to learn from her, but also that he was almost as powerful as she wanted him to be. They moved on and she began to teach him spells that included the regular cards, as well as the enhancement cards with elements. These were complex spells, but they were the strongest of his spells simply because they were so complex and powerful. This training took another two years. Finally after the years were complete he not only had all the lessons that his teacher would give him, but also a wardrobe of clothes that were very respectable. He was now 17 years of age, and Amelia presented him with two spare decks of cards, one element, and one Uses. With these and a reminder that should he ever return to her stronger she would teach him even more magic. She told him that as a mage he now had to find a legal guild and join it, whatever guild it was should be a guild that would feel like home to him. He took his gifts and gave her his promise that he would return to learn even more from her when he was ready. With this parting promise he stepped away and headed off to start his life as a mage.

Ryo smiled as he walked into his home town and headed straight to the Inn he knew well. He thought about the warning he got from his teacher and he knew that he needed to find a guild, but what kind of guild would he like. He then thought about the things that he valued and he was certain that at least the guild he wanted to join had to have a strong sense of brotherhood and had to look out for each other. He didn’t know much about the guilds that mages could even join. He wasn’t sure what his teacher meant by legal guild, but he wasn’t’ going to spend time to find out about something that wasn’t legal after all there was no point in that. He walked into the inn and looked around. He finally spotted the barkeep behind the inn’s bar. He walked up to him and smiled “Well it’s good to see you again my friend.” The barkeep looked at him astounded “RYO! Well you’re a sight for sore eyes! Where have you been my boy?!” Ryo chuckled softly shaking his head “here and there, everywhere. Not important, what is; is the fact that I am a mage. I’m looking for a good guild to join. You have any knowledge of any wizard guilds?” The barkeep thought it over and then nodded “I’ve heard a few about the guilds Fairy Tail, and Sabertooth. Beyond that I know nothing.” Ryo thought a moment and then spoke “Tell me about Sabertooth?” The barkeep thought and smiled “Well they are known for being strong, but not just strong, but united. Like they all have each other’s back and things like that.” Ryo’s smile even wider and he nodded his head “Where are they located?” The barkeep shook his head “Look to the map over there. It’ll tell you.” Ryo quickly walked over to the map as he read it over he found the location of the sabertooth guild hall and with this knowledge in mind he rushed out of the Inn heading to the Sabertooth guild hall.
