337 words ||@Iris || job info/job info || The egg is ready to crack

"I think I'm gay." Ahote commented bluntly, kneeling beneath the bar counter and shuffling through the glassware shelved there. There was no context or otherwise very little conversation between them before this, so the usually prude man's statement was surprising, to say the least. "I haven't really given this much thought before, but I've cleared my head a bit, so—" he looked up and peeked over the counter just enough to find Iris, his ears blushing lightly, "—I guess I'm getting carried away, talking about this."

It was the day after his visit to Famine's gravesite, and he had never felt so weightless. The burden of Basilisk Fang's demise, betrayals, and the abandonment had been left there at the tombstone to waste away under thick, wet snow, and ever since, Ahote had been feeling some sort of high from it. In fact, he was elated to feel so light and untroubled. He nearly forgot what it had felt like. But as a result, his interest in his companions piqued, and while this was not a bad thing, it certainly created awkward and abrupt scenarios such as this. Iris was only the first to receive such spontaneous bluntness from their soft-spoken friend, but he was undoubtedly not the last for at least a while longer.

The silver-haired man knelt back down to continue shuffling through glassware, although what he was trying to accomplish wasn't exactly obvious. He hadn’t been able to prepare the necessary items in order to restore is usual vitality, so he was stuck with the fragility and perpetual illness of his current form. Fortunately, however, he looked quite pleasing to the eye, despite his discomfort. "Do you want to go out with me? To run errands—I mean." he asked, quietly. Despite feeling more elated than ever, very little about the man had really changed. He still brooded, and he maintained a certain regality and politeness in his words. He was, what his companions might coin, still somewhat of a prude—just a giddier one, today.

Iris had been sitting on the barstool with his back against the counter, staring out over the club floor since Ahote wasn't offering much in the way of conversation. In his hand was a stiff drink, of course. He'd been nursing it as if he was just enjoying a nightcap, but in truth, it was the last glass in the bottle he'd opened earlier. However, when Ahote suddenly spoke up from somewhere under the bar, his words serenaded by the clinking of tumblers against one another, the spaceman spasmed hollowly into his nearly empty cup, choking on the liquid and hissing at the burning in his lung. Still half-choking, the man turned hard enough that perhaps a normal human would have suffered whiplash. "Whaaat~?" he asked in a momentarily hoarse voice, though his eyes and face were absolutely elated that Ahote had finally deemed it time to have the talk. His bright eyes met Ahote's as the other man peeked over the bar with glowing ears. He thought this day would never come.

The ever-flirty being wasn't sure what had caused the changes in Ahote, but he couldn't help but see them as improvements. That arm's length he'd always kept his friends at had suddenly shrunk today. Talking about himself? And it was the deep stuff, too, not just his favorite foods or how he felt about someone he knew. No, this was the big one. Sexuality. The very thing Ahote had seemingly avoided like the plague from the moment Iris had laid eyes on the man. For probably nearly two years now the ex-GM had expertly fielded and side-stepped every advancement Iris had thrown at him. To be honest, Iris had assumed him to be asexual at this point. He just teased him to watch him squirm. So for him to suddenly announce that he wasn't, in fact, asexual and that he actually had a preference was baffling and thrilling.

Not only had he dropped that bomb and then moved on like it was basically nothing, now Ahote was deliberately asking Iris to accompany on errands. Iris was growing suspicious. As he agreed to ago and rose from his seat, his eyes narrowed as he examined the currently pale-haired man. Was this some sort of trick? Was he dying? Normally his teammate complained about his antics and the chaos he usually wrought, so choosing to have him come alone seemed strange. Straightening his ever-fashionable clothes that hugged his body just right, Iris came to stand beside the giddy male, prepared to leave. "What brought that about, Ahote~?" he asked, mouth curling up into a small smile. He felt like if he prodded the subject too harshly that Ahote would snap shut like a disturbed clam. Iris wasn't very subtle, but he was trying to be. "How do you know you're gay?" the cosmic dust inquired next, trying to hone in on any juicy details. Had Ahote had some sort of encounter with some gorgeous man and found himself awakened? He had to know the details.

Ahote wasn't expecting Iris to just roll over and take this confession with a grain of salt. For someone who had been accosting him for years, someone who has tried time and time again to woo him this way and that, Ahote's sudden confession wasn't anything to ignore or brush off. So, when choked on his drink, the usually glum man didn't look twice, but he knew he would have to brace for a slew of prying questions from the space gas—dust—whatever he was.

Needless to say, Iris did have a lot of questions, and most likely many more to come. Of course the first would have to have been what caused the sudden epiphany. For a moment, there was a pause between the two. When Ahote finished dressing in a coat and sliding on rimless glasses—which he only wore outdoors—he paused with a thoughtful, contemplating look on his face, looking at the ground as he thought about what to say.

"I guess I have too much time on my hands nowadays. I took care of some old business the other day, and..." Ahote looked at Iris, "Well, I think this conversation was long overdue anyway—and no, I didn't have sex. Now I have a list, so come on."

After that, Ahote led the two out of Boomslang and down the streets of Crocus. It was as busy as it normally was, and despite owning one of the most renowned clubs in the city, Ahote made it a point to not be recognized by most. He had successfully fallen off of the radar of the Magic Council since losing his position as a Coming Storm, and he had the opportunity to start a new life with a clean slate. Problem was, he wasn't sure what to do with a slate as clean as the one he had now. After finally letting go of his burdens with Famine, and abandoning the heartbreak of Sol and Fairy Tail, he wasn't used to being so... untroubled.

Ahote lifted the small "shopping list" to view, looking at how the litany of items stretched down the paper. To others, it might have looked daunting, but to him, it was an ordinary weekday out to prepare for busy nights at Boomslang—and other things for personal use.

After some minutes of walking, they stopped in front of what looked like a bar, but wasn't. What they really did was provide alcohol to local bars by taking orders to stock their inventories. It was one of many places Ahote went to for Boomslang's goods.

"This will only take a minute. If you see anything you want, let me know..." Ahote stopped himself for a moment, looking at Iris again, "You know more about this stuff than I do."

"...A gay list?" Iris asked, at first missing the transition between the sex talk and the errands they were embarking on. Once his brain processed more fully, he snickered. "Oh, right. Supply list. Way less interesting~" the flamboyant man pouted, but it was only momentary. He seemed more than happy to accompany Ahote, whether it be to get more information or just because the young man actually wanted him around for a change.

The short walk to the liquor supply was uneventful. Ahote might be unrecognizable, but Iris only kept his "work face" a secret. Though he could easily change his features to be literally anything else other than his favorite face, that wasn't Iris's style. His infamy was rather small, but he had killed a few important people with this face. If someone came after him, that'd be all the more fun! However, he was probably far more known for his more pleasurable exploits, something he was far more comfortable being open with than some of the people who frequented Boomslang's broom closet and his other haunts. More than one person on the street avoided his eyes shortly after seeing him wink. Oh, the tea he could spill...

Upon entering the supplier and being turned loose by Ahote to pick things, his eyes gleamed with excitement. "You know, you've been picking out things fine even without my exquisite taste~, but I'll be more than happy to assist-- Ooooh~" He nearly danced over to a cabinet full of bright blue, pink, and green liquids. "The Infernal Faerie collection! It's new and so popular this is the first time I've seen it in stock. Oh!" he exclaimed again, pointing to a lone bottle in the same collection, only it was honey-hued with flicks of edible 24k gold floating inside. "The Court Queen, mmmm yes. All of these, but that one is mine~"

When Iris mentioned a gay list, both of them seemed equally slow in processing what exactly that was. Ahote immediately envisioned a list of men across Capital Crocus, in which they would spend the day tracking, pulling aside, and fornicating with only to move to the next poor sucker down the list. It was not at all what Ahote meant by having a list, and while he could seem like a hardass sometimes, even he found the idea so ridiculous that it was mildly amusing. There was a small smile that briefly cracked his lips, but before anyone could admire such hardness soften, he led the way out.

When the two young men meandered into the supply store, nothing was any different from before aside from some very obvious additions to their inventory. The supplier was an old woman who didn't seem to acknowledge anyone or anything's existence until they were across her counter, ready to pay. She always had her face stuffed into paperback editions of the Sorcerer's Magazine and smelled like cigarettes more than alcohol. Meanwhile, Ahote felt as if he had let a child loose to pick things off the shelves in a grocery store. Iris planted himself at a cabinet of one of those many new additions, which was a line up of some of the most colorful and expensive drinks out on the market right now.

In the meantime, Ahote meant what he said about only taking a minute. After finding every product he came here for, he walked over behind Iris to look at that Infernal Faerie collection he was gushing over. Even from here, Ahote could literally see gold floating inside. As he was not a drinker himself, it was hard to see that and wonder why people would drink it. It looked so craftsy that he felt that it wasn't even meant to be drunk. However, despite the confused look on Ahote's face, he walked over to the counter and placed a little checklist in front of the old supplier.

"Just these, and..." Ahote looked back at that collection, "a couple of those from the shelf. Just those in a bag." After that, Ahote picked up the back and led the way out of the store knowing that the rest of his order would ship to Boomslang in just a few days. The two back on the streets of Capital Crocus, on their way to make more boring errands. He knew this, and he knew that this wasn't really what people envisioned on a day out with a friend.

Iris hadn't really changed. Or, if he did, Ahote wouldn't have known it. The two had known each other for years now, and what started as a relationship between colleagues transformed into companions he'd know he'd have for life. Iris and the rest of the Buzz Killers were, without a shadow of a doubt, his ride or die. Even so, for the last few years, the stoic and sometimes awkward man was so caught up in his own burdens and troubles that by the end of it all, he realized he knew little to nothing about those three. While Aeluri and Iris had witnessed many of his own hardships with their own eyes, Ahote was ignorant of their own experiences. After visiting Famine's grave that day and Iris's outburst during the Winter Solstice, he realized that he wasn't nearly as good to them as they were to him. For days, the thought stifled him time and time again.

But he was no longer troubled by that mountain and the guild that once sat upon it. There was no longer an excuse to keep them at an arm's length. His eyes were downcast, focused on the cobblestone path ahead while engrossed in thought. Iris was right here, so why did he have to be so hesitant? Why was taking the next step in a relationship so difficult and heavy? Here was a man responsible for terrorism that killed hundreds and ruined more than that twelvefold, and yet...

"—I'm sorry about everything," said Ahote, abruptly. He began to bashfully scratch the back of his neck, slowly beginning to look at Iris, "Just... everything."

Ah, well there it was. The thoughts in his head could no longer be contained, and suddenly his mind became his mouth. Albeit, the apology came from out of nowhere and to Iris, might have seemed sudden.

Sudden indeed. Just like the declaration of his sexuality, this apology startled the Iris, but this time he didn't choke and whip about like a loon. No, his eyes just slid over to the man he strolled beside, brows puckering over his eyes a little. Maybe he was so calm only because he had his golden flecked bottles, swaddled in brown paper bags, cradled his arms like precious babies-- something he would never willingly do to a real, disgusting child-- and didn't want to break them. "It's fine..." Iris answered the vague apology with a vague acceptance, though the confusion laced his tone. The extraterrestrial wasn't one for grudges. In all his life, he probably only harbored a small handful, and all he could think of were his own kind. So it was absolutely beyond him as to what his teammate was apologizing for. Had he forgotten something?

Wait, was this one of those things humans did just before a drastic act?! What'd they call it? Making amends? Iris's face turned more to face the usually stern man, sizing him up with more overt worry. He couldn't think of a single thing he could possibly be mad at him for. Was it the brushing off his flirts all those years? That'd be painful for some, but Ahote was well aware that pain and denial were turn-ons. As far as Iris was concerned it'd all been in good fun. Ahote didn't have to do anything he didn't want to and Iris enjoyed the game and constant rejections like the sick puppy he was. All parties were happy. So that couldn't be it. It had to be the making amends thing, then! Oh no!

"Suicide is never the answer, Ahote!" he said seriously, stopping mid-path to turn his entire body to face his friend. This might have been the most serious Ahote had ever seen the normally exuberant man because Iris was absolutely convinced that the dual confessions today and the rare invite on errands was him telling Iris goodbye. "They have therapies for this sort of thing, right? I've lived a looooong time, and I can tell you with certainty that living is worth it! You just figured out what raises the dead bone~! You can't end it all now! There's nothing wrong with choosing only one gender to smoosh! DON'T THROW IT ALL AWAY AND DIE A VIRGIN, AHOOOTEEE!" wailed the alcoholic, either forgetting or not caring that they were in a very public place.

Ugh, dying a virgin. Was there a fate worse than that for any Earthland human? A travesty! Iris wouldn't allow it.

    You're a weapon ; and weapons don't weep

The second that Iris began with that bewildered 'It's fine', Ahote knew that he should've been more specific despite how awkward it was. And now that he was thinking about it, was Iris even the type to hold onto those sorts of feelings to begin with? Unlike Ahote, did he keep tabs of every bad thing that's happened? He certainly didn't look or act like the type, but that was just to show how uncertain he was of his understanding of his erotic friend.

Just when Ahote was about to clarify what exactly he was apologizing for, what Iris did next baffled him into silence. Stopping just in front of them in the middle of their path, with a complete and blatant disregard for the number of people in their surroundings, he wailed and insisted that Ahote not kill himself. There was a comment about accepting his homosexuality, a mention of his accomplishment of becoming a proficient necromancer, and he could've sworn he mentioned therapy somewhere in there too. And to top it all off, Iris made one final plea to not only not kill himself, but to not die a virgin. People in the midst of conversations or strolling along the road stopped to witness this excited and theatrical display of concern, and Ahote was left standing there, not sure what to feel. Embarrassed? Yeah. Shocked? Plenty. But, it was more... it was more... well...

"What... the hell are you talking about, Iris?" Ahote's brows twitched, staring at Iris as if he were speaking another language. The second he let himself speak, Ahote could feel those other emotions begin to surface. "Are you crazy?! Is that what you thought this was?! I'm not going to kill myself! And if I were, I'd leave you a well-written note with the passcode to the safe where I store my money! If I committed suicide, you and the others would actually be pretty well off!" Ahote yelled back at the same inappropriate volume Iris used. Even if he were depressed and desperate enough to end his life, he insisted that he'd at least be a bit more thoughtful about it, going as far as explaining his hypothetical plan to him for about thirty seconds before he flinched, and began pushing Iris forward and away from the bundles of people watching them. "—why are we talking about this? That's not what I meant at all."

Iris listened to the man refute his assumption with wide eyes, though it didn't do anything to clear up his confusion concerning Ahote's behavior today. The cosmic being liked to consider himself something of a human expert (this was an exaggerated claim), so usually when one of them started acting out of their normal parameters, something was up. What did 'I'm gay' and 'I'm sorry' have in common?

"Oh ho~, so I and the others get your money when you die? Good to know~.." Iris brimmed, a toothy grin spreading over his lips before he refocused on the conversation at hand. "What did you mean then? You confessed something personal to me, invited me out on an errand, and let me pick out what I wanted at the boozemporium~. And I don't think you've ever apologized to me before, because usually, you yell, which turns me on~! I thought maybe you were making amends~ or something," he laughed, amused by Ahote actually meeting his volume before realizing they were getting looks. He allowed himself to be pushed out of the main walkway and into a much quieter alleyway. "Oooh~ Now we're going somewhere private~, are you gonna punish me, Ahote?" he teased, though as usual, his suggestiveness was as hopeful as it was a joke. Iris still wasn't entirely convinced the man wasn't going to off himself, since he'd evidently thought about it in depth at some point to even have a plan, but he was open to seeing exactly what Ahote was driving at. Or open to some public indecency before his friend's end drew near...

Once they had more privacy, Iris's expression sobered for a moment. Sure, he wanted to make good on his joke and rile Ahote up, but he did care for the man. He, Aeluri, and Ahote had been close for years...well, as close as people who never talk about themselves could be. Even someone as shameless as Iris could set aside his insatiable quest for a good lay to make sure his friend was okay. "You never open up to me. To any of us. This is outside your normal habits, so...I'm a little worried, okay?"
