    Black

Walking through the grandiose trees of the Magnolian forests Markus couldn’t help but let out a deep breath. Today had been, different than the chaos mage had expected.  Markus had returned to his home city in the wee hours of the morning, under the cover of darkness. It was then that he learned the entire city was preparing for some sort of Festival, the posters dubbed it The Fairy Festival. It had a parade, fights, and culminated in an elaborate, and romantic, cherry blossom viewing.

The final event had started but a few hours ago. Markus, generally one to avoid such… emotions, had left the city only quite recently. He had been tempted sure, having seen his guildmates, their enjoyment, their fun, to join. Yet, something held him back, even as he had sat in the shadows, not meters from Nessa he could not reveal his presence and was glad that his gifts had kept him hidden.

It was not until Markus was sure he was away from her sensory range did he allow the shadows to drop from his form, and he made his way unhidden through the streets of Magnolia, heading to the one place he always felt comfortable.

Completely alone among the grand oaks and towering evergreens Markus did not even think to use his own sensory abilities or watch for anyone who could be following him. He was too lost in thought for such actions, remembering the last few years of his life, trapped within darkness, hidden from Earthland.

Markus did not know, but only four months had passed sense he had vanish from Fairy Tail, only informing Sorano of his need to visit a distant country. For the chaos mage however, over 3 years had passed, and four birthdays had come and gone. He had changed, almost to the point of being unrecognizable, at least to those who did not know his signature features such as hair, eyes, and pale skin.

Markus seemed gaunter than he once was, and his skin was, if at all possible, paler. As if for the last 3 years food had not been his number one priority, and the sun had been nonexistent. His face was sharper, and hard lines creased his once delicate features. His hair had grown, now reaching beyond his shoulders, and his eyes looked distant. As if having finally looked too far into the abyss. Yet they still held his signature charm, and steadfast determination, as if he could and already had concurred any obstacle, including that abyss. Little was one to know how much of a facade that was.

Yet, none of that would be what surprised those who knew him. No, Markus seemed to have an air to his features that had once been nonexistent, that of emotion. If one was watching without his knowledge, one might just see the mage smile, a true smile one of feeling content for the first time with his lot in life.

Lost in thought Markus only stopped when realizing where he was. He found himself in a rough but large circular clearing. Looking down, Markus could see scattered dirt, and the remains of a crater. This very location had been the place that he had fought, and lost, to Aven. It was that day so long ago that Markus had decided that he would join Fairy Tail.

Oversights. It was a constant stream of them, Aviel's finger tapping repeatedly on the rafters of the Arena. That duel should have posed no issue for Aven, being given all the time needed to set up his Circles, and secure multiple avenues for escape from any particularly nasty spells Leona threw at him, not to mention a solid control of the playing field. An area of that size and shape was, quite literally, the perfect setup for Circle magic, and yet he'd lost concentration halfway through. An oversight, yes, but not only on Aven's part; with the colossal blow to the boy's confidence, it was uncertain whether he'd ever be the same wizard again. There were a few distinct possibilities, but they both seemed equally extreme: either, Aven would persevere and become an even stronger magic user because of the loss, or the fear of losing control would consume him, and he'd gradually lose the ability to employ magic at all. It'd happened to several mages in Aviel's memory, for various reasons, but the angel had faith in his young charge. There was much for him to learn, and if he was anything like his namesake, such a small setback wouldn't keep him down for long. With any luck, Nessa would be there to soften the blow; in fact, he was counting on it.

Now that Aviel had a physical form once more, he wasn't as bound to his descendant's movements, and besides that, the monstrous magical presence in the judges booth assured Aven's safety. The angel shook his head lightly, marveling at the raw power emanating from the wizard's direction: Samira Nassar... He'd met hundreds of mages that boasted of transcendental power, but he could count on one hand the number that spoke the truth. He found that the strongest of wizards did not brag of their power, as those who have surpassed their limits simply stopped counting a long time ago. Aviel, himself, never shared the luxury, of course, having lost his mortality to Dark Matter long before he would have been considered any measure of a mage.

The Seraph's attention flickered over to the stands, where his quarry was suddenly on the move. He'd been keen to watch Aven's debut, but his primary objective was, as usual, furthering preparations to eliminate Castor. Without a whisper, the angel was gone, melded into the light of the day, as his eyes kept careful track of Markus. He danced between rays of light, as he trailed the Chaos wizard, suppressing his magical presence out of instinct. Were he in physical form, a nostalgic grin would have passed his face. Aviel hadn't partaken in covert operations since... well, likely since their time in the plane of Revaliir, long before he became a Seraph. Back then, of course, he used a vastly different method of trailing, perhaps as different as it could be. They were good times, most of them, and provided they recovered Hakon without major loss, those times could continue.

It was a short while before Markus entered a secluded location; though, coincidentally, it happened to be the same spot where the young man and Aven had fought for the first time, and where he'd decided to join Fairy Tail. Fitting, he supposed, for this to be where the two of them had their first chat. The most striking detail, however, was how much Markus had changed since Aviel had first seen him in that desert cave. Once upon a time, the lad was little past a vagabond, unruly eyes and an iron will bent on survival. He grown considerably since then, and the aura of void he emitted spoke volumes on the subject. That would certainly be a topic of discussion in their little chat, but there was no need to rush it. Admonishing the youth would do little good... especially when Aviel was no better, himself.

Aviel's form materialized in a tree nearby, one leg hanging down as he leaned against the thick trunk. "Brings back memories, does it? No doubt, you expected a reprise of that fateful fight in today's match." In an instant, he was no longer in the tree, seeming to walk out of a ray of light breaking through the sparse canopy, making his way on foot into the clearing. "Aven's magic is brutally effective, perhaps, but he lacks the experience to utilize it properly. In time, he'll find what he lacks, I'm sure." The light of the setting sun dawned over Aviel's attire as he broke into the clearing, a white silken robe than flowed with the wind. "So, what about you, Markus Eldridge? Have you found what you lack?"

Markus took a deep breath and spent a few moments to examine his environment. Four years was a long time, and much had changed for the chaos mage. Yet the forest as always looked timeless, pristine, unchanged. The mage stopped entirely, every muscle in his body unmoving, just as he was taught. He let the breath out.

He questioned just how much had changed within Magnolia the city looked rather familiar, yet that did not surprise him. If anything, it made him hopeful, after all cities don’t change too often. Fairy Tail however was a different story…

He had seen Nessa as a judge, and learned she was a Wizards Saint. The chaos mage had not even realized she had progressed so much. Yet, he was proud to know the hopeless mage he once knew had proven him quite wrong. Perhaps, the dark mage could learn to trust her.

Aven, the light caster circle mage had grown much more powerful. Markus made sure to watch his fight closely, and although the outcome had surprised him all that meant to the Markus was that Aven needed proper training and concentration. The chaos mage knew what it meant to loose control…

There were many other changes which Markus had noticed. The guild had new members, and the town was throwing a festival. The members he once knew seemed to be doing well, and the sure amount of mages Markus had never seen before spoke wonders to how well the guild was doing. What need really was there for Markus, the darkness mage questioned. Perhaps they would be better without his sudden return. He had spent so long questioning every second way, yet understandably they had moved on.

Markus turned his hands upon himself, looking into his palm, fingers curved slightly. Chaotic energy surged between his fingers arcing almost like electricity. Black arcs snapping between each finger, slowly a ‘hole’ in the universe opened in the mages palm. A sudden black void within the universe. Markus found himself looking once more into that abyss.

The destructive power came so easily after ‘her’ training. Almost too easily. The chaos mage no longer had to find his center, no longer had to concentrate, no longer had to control his emotions. As such Chaos had released the constraints on the dark mages and given him her lacrima, making his magic stronger, but much more dangerous. The mage knew if he lost control of those emotions, he would hurt those near, and the Avatar would control him. Markus still remembered Soranos words. Could the chaos mage really return…

Taking a deep breath Markus released the magic, allow chaos to fade back into the void. Looking up, the mage heard someone speak. It took Markus a moment to remember who he was speak to, obviously the man knew him. This area certainly brought back memories for the mage, and that was when Markus finally recognized who was in front of him, and he realized how this person knew about that fight.

“I was trying to figure out what had happened for sure. That fight was… surprising….” Markus looked at Aviel directly. “But. Aven is smart, and stubborn. I am sure he will find what he needs to gain control.” Markus winced a little to the light. “Certainly, I discovered a… well a lot, while I was gone.” The chaos mage was somewhat guarded. He knew very little about Aviel.

Turning towards the city the chaos mage spoke once more. “A lot has changed while I was away, the guild has grown, and everyone is so much stronger. I am proud to see how they have grown.” Grasping his loose hair, he once more put it into a pony tail, and held a ghost of a smile on his face.

Markus had learned a lot about chaos, the void, and primordial in his time away. He glanced towards Aviel, even a little about angels, as enigmatic as they were. “What brings you hear? I am surprised you are not with Aven.”

Aviel's lips pursed. His absence from guarding Aven had nearly cost the both of them dearly, his plans would have been set back a good deal if Zane had actually gotten his hands on the Aven's memory stone. Albeit brief, the encounter could have soured considerably if Castor hadn't been foolish enough to send Zane instead of his other, less empathetic servants. It pained Aviel to imagine the kind of torture the young man was enduring at the moment for his failure, but the boy was an Alveron, tried and true: he'd weather the storm just fine.

Regardless, Zane was not his concern at the moment. With the recent development of his return, Markus was far more pressing of a matter. Almost second nature at this point, Aviel could sense void from miles around, a very distinct energy. There were different apertures of void, of course, and he'd been relieved that Aven's rival hadn't been sporting Castor's particular flavor. Likely, he'd been in contact with one of many other Void entities, a powerful one, at that. The energy was muddled by Markus's own magical signature, of course, but if the Seraph had to venture a guess, he would have placed his bet on one of the Void Gods; it was a bit too strong to be a simple boon from a denizen, and far too complex to be naturally absorbed. Markus had stared into the abyss, and met it's gaze, there was no doubt.

The question remained, of course, what Aviel's plan to convince the youth would be: throughout his life, he'd more or less winged recruitment, no pun intended, whether it be for a rescue mission or a government coup d'etat. He'd a silver tongue, which hadn't exactly changed when he added a dash of gold to his color scheme, but such talents never fared well against others with similar attributes. More often than not, those attempts ended in a verbal dance with neither party leading, and, while interesting, were never productive. No, if he wanted to win Markus over before Castor had a shot, he was going to need to dig past the surface.

Aviel's expression lightened once more, and he waved the question away. "There are several Wizard Saints, not to mention a few God's of Ishgar mozying about Magnolia, any threat to Aven is few and far between. Besides," His wings beat lightly against the shadows behind him, and the darkness writhed unnaturally for a moment, before subsiding, "Aven is not my only concern: I noticed you've been dancing with shadows lately, and not the normal kind. It would be difficult for such an event to escape my gaze, you're probably aware, and as of now, I'd like to hear your thoughts on your newfound associates." Aviel's smile was remarkably different from Aven's, even setting family resemblance aside: it was an odd combination of both gentleness and understanding, and a fierce contempt, an unfortunate side effect of the angel's contradictory nature.

Aviel paused for an answer. His inquiry had notes of a threat, that much he couldn't hide: he wasn't a fan of lies, and knowing what little he did from observing Markus, the Shadow wizard would likely appreciate his candor from the start. Treading on eggshells wasn't on his to-do list, and his to-do list was remarkably long at the time.

Markus eyes the being warily. It was strange, talking to the creature without Aven near. Hell Markus wondered now if Aven even know Aviel was with the chaotic mage, and if any of this would be repeated to his fellow guild member. That, more than anything else being said, was at the forefront of his mind, after all the chaos mage had reasons for remaining hidden, and he did not want them ruined because he had slipped up.

Markus looked the creature directly in the eyes, “Before we continue, I need your word that my return, and anything spoken stays between the two of us? Assuming of course that I do not show signs of hostility towards Aven, Nessa, the guild, or Magnolia.” Markus had spent time in Chaos’ Court and had learned that such a promise was binding, especially to higher beings. In the end, Markus knew they were just words and Aviel could if he desires go straight to Aven. However, the chaos mage had a feeling that would not be the case.

Only after Markus got his assurances would he continue and answer the first question. “To be honest, I believe you are letting your fear or doubt get the better of you. Such a veiled threat? My ‘associate’ as you put it is not newfound, nor even an associate. If anything, they are a long-term friend and benefactor. I would not be where I am if I did not ‘play in the shadows’ and I have no regrets in those decisions. After all, ‘Only with Darkness, can there be Light’,” Markus said, repeating the fraise he had heard since he was only ten years old. “Magic does not make one evil, Darkness does not lead to a dark heart, just as light does not lead to a pure one. Despite what self-righteous pantheons will try and twist people into believing.” The chaos mage finished, every word true. He by no means thought he was playing with anything any more dangerous than someone who killed with fire or drowned with water. Magic was a tool and nothing else.

Markus looked towards the ground and watched the wind moved the trees. The forest at this time was always peaceful, calming, quiet. As always Markus felt most at home when he was alone, able to enjoy his solitude. Even the angel beside him would not ruin his mood, after all Markus had been trapped in a place worse than Hell, and finally returned home…

Suddenly, he train of thought was broken as he felt a shift in the void. He could tell, suddenly something was trying to enter Earthland from somewhere else, and he watched too slow to respond as a massive demonic claw shot into the air from a rip in the ground, grasping at the chaos mage he was suddenly pulled from Earthland once more into the squabbles of another being.
