Post by Rin Mayou on 3rd April 2018, 8:15 pm

The spooky forest. Again. Sighing deeply, Rin clutched onto Lily, her bunny-cat companion, as she walked towards the dreary place. Why is it that she always found herself going to creepy woods for jobs? There were plenty of beautiful and exotic places in the world, but nooo, she was always finding herself in the dark, cold, and often stinky forests. Pulling out her iLac, the pink haired girl searched around for the job information she was given. A lost puppy, huh? Why would a cute little animal run away to an awful place like this? "Hey, Lily. If we find the puppy can we keep it?" Rin snickered, looking at her pet with amusement in her eyes. Releasing herself from her human friend's grip, Lily floated in front of her, causing Rin to stop in her tracks. "Why? Thinking of replacing me?" Lily teased, a toothy smirk cracking across her cute little face. "Never! You're the only annoying pet I can handle!" Grabbing her pet once more, Rin ruffled the fur on her head, laughing joyfully.

Noticing that they had reached the entrance to the deeper part of the forest, the two partners stopped, sitting in the grass. There was supposedly another mage that would be joining them on their mission, but neither of them knew who it was. The council always had surprises in store for the young mage, but she always just rolled with the punches. Sighing deeply, she laid on her back, looking up at the canopy of leaves that hung above them. "I wonder what this person is going to be like. I hope they're nice. OOH! And I hope they have a pet, too! Maybe they'll let me hold it! AH!" She squealed, getting a bit too excited over the idea of a new friend. "Dear, you need to calm down! You might attract something to us... It wouldn't be good if we were ambushed when we leas-"

A rustle in the bushes. The noises startled both of the girls. Standing up quickly, Rin grabbed her tablet, ready to defend herself if need be. She could make out 2 shadows, one larger one and a smaller one right beside it. There were two possibilities. 1, it was the mysterious mage that was here to help her, or 2, it was one of the vulcans that resided in this forest, and was here to rip her face off. Taking a tentative step forwards, Rin spoke up, prepared for either situation. "Who's there?"

    "Aeluriiiiiiii, I'm hungry!"

The little annoying voice drifted up to Aeluri's ears for what felt like the billionth time that day. Aeluri glared down at the tiny black cat walking next to her. Occasional tiny beams of light flickered across her jet black hair as they walked under the heavy canopy of the dark forest. The shadows were deep and visibility was low in the Spooky Forest, but the black-haired woman did not seem to be phased. The little cat, however, kept glancing over his shoulders nervously as they trudged along to their destination.

"Umbra, I've told you every mile since we passed the last town that we have to finish this job before we can go eat! As long as the mage we're working with is cooperative, it shouldn't take more than an hour to finish."

"A whole HOUR?!" cried Umbra, flopping over in the grass in an exaggerated motion. "My stomach will consume me from the inside out by then! Our last meal was hours ago, can we please find some food?"

Aeluri rolled her red and gold eyes as she stopped and turned towards the small feline. They met eyes and she stared at him pointedly with one eyebrow raised until he looked away with a sigh. "Fine, fine," Umbra grumbled as he rolled over back onto his feet, glancing over his shoulders into the shadows once more. The two continued venturing along the overgrown path towards their destination, a clearing that led into the deep center of the forest.

"So, what exactly is this stupid job anyway?" Umbra inquired as he shuffled his black paws along the trail, sulking that his stomach wouldn't be appeased for a while yet. "It says on the flyer I was sent that we have to rescue a puppy that ran away into this forest. The owner, Ms. Hammelten, is devastated that it's gone." Aeluri shrugged her shoulders. "Seems easy enough to me." Umbra lifted his head in excitement. "That doesn't seem bad," he said with a purr, "How hard can it be to find a stupid puppy?" A smirk crawled across Aeluri's mouth. "Oh, I forgot to mention, the paper says to watch out for Vulcans because this forest is home to tons of them."

A loud hiss came out of Umbra's mouth and he leapt out of Aeluri's view. She turned with a swish of her kimono to see him clinging to a tree trunk with his sharp claws dug deep into the bark. His fur was puffed out as far as it could go and his eyes darted back and forth, sweeping the forest for Vulcans. Aeluri let out a giggle at the sight of her companion looking like a terrified puffball of the night. Umbra, upon seeing that he was in no immediate danger, slowly let go of the tree and smoothed down his fur with a few embarrassed licks. "Vulcans are scary, okay?" He bounded ahead down the path, and Aeluri jogged to keep up with him.

At last, after hours of travel, the two neared the edge of the clearing that led into the deepest part of the forest. As they were pushing through the bushes, Umbra smelled an unfamiliar scent. Just as he swished his tail against Aeluri's leg in warning, an unknown voice rang out across the clearing. "Who's there?"

Before them, Aeluri and Umbra saw a tiny girl and a floating, cat-looking creature. The girl's long pink hair fell down her back, a white bow pinned at the back of her head to keep it out of her face. What a peculiar color, thought Aeluri, as she had come from a village where hair only came in blacks and browns. In the small girl's hands was an electronic device, a tablet from the looks of it, and she held it forward like a weapon. Her face held a look of determination, but Aeluri could see a spark of fear in her eyes.

"Are you the mage I'm supposed to be working with? I didn't think they let kids do jobs these days," Aeluri said as she leaned casually against a tree, examining her nails. Umbra hid behind her legs, observing the girl and cat-creature with wary eyes. He was prepared to book it if they made any suspicious movements.

Her first instinct had been correct. It was her partner for this job. A woman. She was quite beautiful. An elegant kimono wrapped delicately around her body, and her long black hair reaching down almost to her waist. One of the most striking qualities about her though, were her eyes. Crimson red and shimmering gold. Strange indeed. Curiosity tugged at her, but she decided that now probably wasn't the best time for questions. There was a job to be done, and now that her partner had arrived, it was time to get going.

Wait a moment... A kid?! W-What?! "E-Excuse me ma'am! But I will have you know that I am NOT a kid!" Rin huffed, approaching the strange woman with a pout on her face. "I happen to be 16 years old! A-And just because I'm short doesn't mean that I can't kick your kimono wearing butt! What rank are you even?! HUH?! Because guess what, sister! I'm a B ranked mage! That's right! B RANK! I'm pretty hot stuff!" She rambled, an egotistical smile replacing the pout which had just been present moments before. Bored of the squabbling, Lily peeked over her human companions shoulder, glancing at the black haired woman before noticing the creature that stood next to her. Poking Rin's shoulder, Lily tried to point out the little creature, since she had been talking about pets just a few moments ago. Too busy with her pacing and ranting, the bunny-cat's prods had gone unnoticed to the angry, pink haired girl.

Gingerly floating forwards, Lily inspected the fellow catlike animal. You could practically see hearts in her large, red eyes. "H-Hi there! M-My name is Lily! N-N-Nice tail!" She blurted, before flying back to her friend, extremely flustered. Noticing that her pet had seemed more nervous than usual, Rin stopped speaking and looked to her, surprised. Lily had never acted like that before... She was always calm and composed. Always. Shrugging it off until another time, Rin looked back towards the woman who had just joined them. It was a bit brash of her to act the way she did. "I'm sorry for snapping at you! M-My name is Rin. Rin Mayou." She apologized, bowing politely. "And this little ball of fluff is Lily." She continued, pointing to her furry companion. "I suppose we'll be getting to know each other better on this journey. It may be a long one from the looks of it. This forest is pretty large... The dog could be anywhere." Grabbing her iLac, she searched for any more clues she could find about the location of this pup. "It seems like the last time he was spotted was at the western edge of the woods. I guess we can start there."

Fabricating the pen for her tablet, Rin began to scribble quickly, drawing two creatures on it. As soon as the pen left the screen, two large beings appeared, their mouths opening in a mighty roar. Approaching the newly created lions, the small girl patted each of them gently on the forehead. "I figured it would be a bit faster if we had a ride." She snickered, obviously trying to show off her skills, since the older woman seemed to doubt her. Hopping onto the back of one of the beasts, Rin began to move forward slowly. "Well, you coming or not?"

Aeluri raised an eyebrow as Rin pulled out her tablet after such a loud, rage-filled outburst. She’s quite the fireball if her buttons are pushed, Aeluri thought with a little smirk. I’ll keep that in mind for the future. Rin’s face scrunched up as she started sketching, her pen moving swiftly across the tablet screen. Suddenly two enormous lions appeared with a burst of pixels in the air, landing gracefully on the soft, grassy forest floor.

Aeluri’s eyes sparkled as the big cats stepped forward with a roar, but she maintained a neutral expression on her face. She had loved cats of all kinds her whole life, and every chance she got to meet one made her heart soar. Umbra, however, was not as impressed. He bared his teeth as he craned his head to look at the maned beasts. “Why do they have to be lions and way bigger than me?” he grumbled, damaged ego quite apparent. A small giggle came from the top of one of the lions, and both Aeluri and Umbra looked up to see Rin and Lily sitting on its back. Lily let out another giggle at Umbra, who turned his nose up in embarrassment. “Well, you coming or not?” said the pink-haired girl with a smirk.

With the grace of a feline, Aeluri leapt atop the second lion. Umbra followed, unfortunately not as graceful. “You should work on your accuracy, Umbra,” said Aeluri.

    “Shut up.”

Aeluri let out a small laugh. With a lurch, the lions began running into the forest. Umbra dug his claws into Aeluri’s lap as their ride bounded forward, but the black-haired wizard did not flinch.

The further into the deep forest they went, the less light was able to filter through the trees. Shadows seemed to loom and jump as if they were living creatures, and Umbra clung to Aeluri in fright. From within her bag, Aeluri retrieved two magic lanterns, one of which she tossed across to the two friends on the other lion. The lantern bounced between Rin’s hands for a few seconds before she clutched it to her chest with a sigh of relief. Light pierced the shadows as both wizards held up their lanterns. Slowing the lions down a bit, they scoured the shadows for any trace of the puppy. Not a paw print nor tuft of hair could be found. As their maned steeds trekked on, Aeluri realized they had reached the top of a small hill. Large boulders and rock formations loomed ominously in the misty darkness. The trees seemed less dense, but still no light came through the canopy.

Suddenly, Aeluri heard the slighted swish of fur and a soft whoosh of air. Alarms went off in her head, and her instincts signaled immediate danger. In a split second, she swiped up Umbra in her arms and dived towards the other wizard. “WATCH OUT!” she cried as she tackled Rin off of the lion, grabbing Lily by the tail as she went.

An enormous boulder whizzed through the air instantly after Aeluri leapt, smashing into both of the lions with a loud crack. Pixels shattered through the air as both lions disintegrated, their roars of pain fading into the murky silence of the forest.

The hillside was more rocky than Aeluri anticipated, which she regretted as the four of them tumbled through the bushes. “OW!” Umbra yowled in pain as his tail got caught between Aeluri’s leg and the ground. The group came to an unruly stop in a cloud of dust and leaves at the bottom of the hill.

Everything seemed to be going smoothly! Well... Aside from the creepy shadows and the occasional strange noise. But other than that everything was great! The lions leap forward gracefully yet swiftly into the forest, dragging them deeper and deeper into it's dark clutches. The lantern Aeluri had provided helped aid visibility slightly, but even then the peach haired girl found herself squinting and leaning forward to get a better look. If she leaned any father, she might have fallen off of her mount!

After what seemed like an eternity of searching, Rin turned to her companion on this mission, lips parting in preparation for her to speak. Though, the only thing that managed to escape her was a loud, yet strangled, "OOF!" The last thing she saw before she hit the ground with a thud was a swirl of long, black hair. Had Aeluri just tackled her off of the lions? But why?! Was there a bug or something? Surely she would have just told her instead of doing something so brash, though. Her unspoken question was answered moments after, as a huge boulder barreled it's way downwards, smashing into what had formerly been the two lions she had created. Unfortunately though, now they were nothing but a cloud of pixels that floated through the air. "W-What?! M-My lions!" The young girl cried, sitting up abruptly. Her body was unhappy with this sudden motion though, and protested with a series of aches and pains. "Ouch..." She mumbled, placing a hand on her shoulder. Where did that thing come from?

That wasn't the thing she was most concerned about at this particular moment, though. "Are you okay, miss? I-I never got your name or I would thank you properly, b-but for now, uh, thank you for saving me and... Lily... Wait, Lily?! Where are you?!" Distracted by the lack of fluff in her arms, Rin looked around frantically, trying to find her pet. "I'm fine, Rin. I'm right here. Though, that woman did give my tail a good tug. Could you perhaps be a bit more gentle next time?" The bunny cat creature grumbled, her words a bit muffled as her rough tongue tugged at the white ball of fluff that was her tail. Soon, a small yowl left the feline creature's mouth as her human companion grabbed her, pulling her close to her chest. "Gosh! You scared me half to death! But, y'know, you could benefit from being nicer to the person who just saved your behind!" Rin scoffed, booping the creature on the nose.

A sudden crunching and booming noise interrupted the sweet reunion, though, causing both Rin and Lily to jump in surprise. "Do I smell pretty lady?!" An unfamiliar voice questioned, just before the booming noise continued. Great. Looked like it was one of those pesky vulcans. Standing up quickly, Rin did her best to usher both Aeluri and her cute kitty towards some nearby bushes. Once hidden, the girl looked over to her rescuer, giving her a small nod, as if to assure that everyone was okay. Now it was time to act. Grabbing her tablet once more, Rin began to scribble. Once she had finished, a life-sized cardboard cut out of Astrid Foss appeared, sitting idly at the bottom of the hill. "Gosh this is weird, but she was the only famous female mage I could think of" The peach haired girl mumbled, an awkward smile forming on her face. "That should keep it distracted for a moment. We should probably come up with some sort of plan while it is." After placing her tablet back in the bag that hung loosely from her neck, she lifted a hand into the air, whispering "ReQuip" as quietly as she could, trying her best not to attract the beast.

After the word had been spoken, a bright light formed just above her hand, and from the light came a dainty, sugary bubblegum pistol. As it dropped safely into her hand, she aimed it towards the cardboard cutout, waiting for the vulcan to appear. "We could sit here and wait for them to come to us, or we can go to them. Up to you."

"Pretty lady?! I kiss pretty lady!"

As the vulcan bounded forward, Rin's grip on her weapon tightened, preparing for the kickback that would come from the deceivingly small pistol. As the perverted beast reached out towards the cutout she created, a gunshot echoed throughout the forest. The shot was a perfect one. Right in the leg. "Owwieeee!" The cry was loud, piercing through her ears. It was never her intention to kill the beast, only to hinder it, and since vulcans were big cowards, possibly scare it off. Both of those things happened with this particular beast. Limping awkwardly back into the deeper parts of the forest, the creature disappeared, not to disturb them again.

Aeluri raised a single brow as a cardboard cutout of a white-haired woman shimmered into existence in the clearing before the two girls and their pets. Rin’s magic was intriguing indeed. The smaller girl mumbled something with the name Astrid Foss, but Aeluri didn’t recognize the wizard. I really need to do my research on wizards in Fiore, she thought, but was immediately distracted by the distant crashing of bushes. Both Umbra and Lily scooted closer to Aeluri in their leafy hiding spot as the noise grew louder. A giant green vulcan burst into the clearing, heading towards the cutout with a creepy shine in its eyes.

    BANG!

The next thing she knew, the vulcan was limping swiftly into the bushes in defeat while Rin stood steady, holding a smoking pink gun. The weapon seemed too adorable to have carried out something so incapacitating. Aeluri gave a nod of admiration in Rin’s direction, impressed with her finesse in battle.

A soft whimper drifted faintly from down the hill and the black-haired wizard whipped her head around, suddenly remembering why she was in the dark depths of the forest in the first place. Gently placing Lily on the ground under the bushes near Rin, she swiped up Umbra and advanced silently down the hill towards the noise of distress. Aeluri knew now that Rin could handle herself and was not concerned with leaving her job partner behind to deal with the vulcan.

“Why are you bringing me with?! There could be more vulcans!” Umbra growled at Aeluri, his tall ears flattened against his head and his hackles raised.

“Shh, I have a plan if we get in trouble,” Aeluri replied quietly, gently patting the black cat’s head in reassurance. Umbra’s fur flattened down a little but he still seemed defensive.

The whimpering continued as they snuck forwards, accompanied by the soft gurgling of a stream. As they neared the sound of the water, the two black-haired friends found themselves standing behind a giant boulder submerged in the earth on the edge of the stream. A tree grew out of the side of the boulder, drooping so low it seemed to be on the verge of collapse. Aeluri pushed aside the curtain of lichen and ivy hanging from the lopsided tree, peering around the side of the boulder. In the middle of the stream, perched on a rock and looking very sorry for itself was a small golden puppy. Its sunshiny fur was caked with mud and its paws were soaking wet, causing it to shiver pitifully. Sad brown eyes looked up from its face. The puppy’s whimpers rang out through the trees as if it were calling for help, or perhaps wallowing in its self-pity. Aeluri moved to step forward into the stream but quickly darted back behind the boulder, clutching Umbra close to her chest.

A vulcan had stepped out from the trees downstream, sniffing and looking around. When it heard the heartbreaking whimpers and saw the tiny golden puppy, the vulcan let out an excited hoot. “Found puppy! Puppy!” it cried, beckoning behind it.

Three other vulcans appeared behind the first. Seeing four giant green-furred beasts was probably a first for the small canine, as well as incredibly terrifying. The four let out a chorus of hoots and hollers as they splashed up the stream towards the puppy. The small golden being had no chance of escape and was swiped up into the hands of the first vulcan. The other three crowded around it and cooed at the golden canine as it struggled and let out scared barks.

“What do we do?” whispered Umbra quietly as he watched the scene in the stream. A shiver rippled down his back as he sympathized for the puppy.

“I told you I had an idea, but you might not like it very much,” Aeluri replied softly. She whispered the plan into Umbra’s tall ears, making gestures with her hands. He bared his fangs in a grimace as she finished but begrudgingly nodded his fuzzy head in agreement.

With a small whoosh, Umbra merged into the shadow of the giant boulder. Aeluri watched as the black cat jumped between the shadows of different trees, moving towards the vulcans and the puppy. He got close enough to traverse into the shadow of one of the vulcans, then returned back to his normal, non-shadow body. After taking a deep breath, still unnoticed by the vulcans, he opened his jaws and let out an ear-splitting yowl. All four vulcans jumped in terrified surprise, their fur ruffling as they looked around for the offender. Umbra continued to hide behind one of the vulcans, dodging its giant feet. Aeluri stood from her crouched position behind the boulder, tossing a rock up and down in her hand. She drew her arm back and launched the stone downstream into the trees. It rebounded off a few trees and broke some branches, making a lot of noise. All the vulcans turned towards the sound with confused looks. The leader put down the puppy, suddenly focused elsewhere. As the vulcans headed downstream towards where her rock had landed, Aeluri slipped from behind the boulder and started wading through the water, trying not to make a splash. She pushed her long black hair out of her face and held the bottom of her kimono up above the water as she went. The puppy and Umbra, both soaking wet, waited for her on side by side on top of the rock in the stream. She reached the two animals and leaned forward to pick them up. A loud and excited yap came from the puppy’s mouth as its small body wiggled in excitement. Aeluri winced and looked towards the vulcans, hoping they hadn’t noticed.

Unfortunately, vulcans have very good hearing.

“Puppy thief! Puppy thief!” the vulcans cried as they charged back up the stream towards Aeluri. She scooped one drenched animal under each arm and splashed back across the stream, not as concerned with the noise as she had been seconds before. Ducking under the lichen of the leaning tree, she bolted back the way she had come, towards her pink-haired, weapon-carrying job partner. The vulcans chased close behind, letting out angry noises as they ran.

    “RIN!”

"W-Wha" Rin mumbled as Aeluri took off, heading towards noises that had come from behind them. She hadn't made any indications for the young girl to follow, so instead she took a moment to clean her gun. It somehow managed to get sticky from the bubblegum bullets that it shot. It was quite annoying, since gum wasn't the easiest thing to get off of thing. "Ugh..." She grumbled as she flicked a large chunk of the sticky substance off of her hand. "Maybe I should have made these weapons self cleaning, huh Lily?" The bunny-cat nodded dully in response, seeming to be in her own little world. Pouting in frustration, the pink haired girl prodded Lily with her weapon. "Hey! I was talking to you! What's going on with you?" She asked, confused by the way her companion was acting. "W-Well... That tom-cat... He was so handsome." The feline creature gushed, hearts practically appearing in her deep red eyes. Rolling her eyes and smiling, Rin patted her pet gently on the head. It looked like Lily had a little crush!

Just as Rin was about to ask more, a series of loud noises came from behind her once more. Was Aeluri okay?! Getting up abruptly, Rin mumbled a quick "Time to go!" before scooping up Lily and heading towards the ruckus. Just as she got close enough to the noises to see what was happening, Aeluri yelled out her name. "I-I'm coming!" She called back, picking up her pace. Probably would have been a good idea to run the other way, though. Here came the black haired woman, golden puppy and a ruffled looking feline secured in her arms. And just behind her was the squad of vulcans. Welp... Probably a good idea to... "RUN!" Yeah... That... Turning around quickly on her heel, Rin began sprinting in the other direction, praying that the two mages would be able to make it out of this damned forest.

But unfortunately, those stupid vulcans were fast... It didn't help that they had more stamina, either. They were gaining on the two women, and fast. It was time to be heroic. Stopping dead in her tracks, Rin threw her pistol into the air, watching as it disappeared into a flash of light. Digging in her bag, she grabbed her tablet, fabricating the pen quickly and scribbling on it as fast as she could. "Stay behind me! This is gonna be close!" She yelled to her job partner, wanting to make sure that she stayed safe! As she finished drawing, a large ring of fire began to appear in a blaze of glory. It just so happened that the previously mentioned vulcans had ran right into the fiery trap! "Hot! Hot! REEEEEEEE!" One of the vulcans screamed, dancing around the circle in discomfort. "Yep! Time to go!" Rin said, grabbing Aeluri's wrist and pulling her along with her, retreating from the area. As they left the forest, they could hear a subtle "REEEEEEEEEEEEEEE" coming from the trapped beasts. People say you can still hear it to this day.

"Whew! That was a close one, wasn't it?" The pink haired girl sighed, a bit out of breath from all of the fleeing. Reaching forward, Rin made grabby hands towards the cute little ball of fluff that Aeluri had rescued. It was time for cuddles! "At least we saved this little cutie! Hi you little pookey face! Lemme hold youuuu!~" She cooed, as she picked it up, nuzzling her cheek against it's soft, golden fur. "Let's get you home!"

    Job: Find the Lost Puppy!
    Mood: LIT.
Aeluri’s hair waved softly in the breeze as she and Umbra departed from Mr. Hammelten’s farm. They had just finished returning his beloved golden puppy with Rin and Lily, and were heading out on their next adventure.

Mr. Hammelten obviously loved his pet, and when he saw the group walking up the road with the bundle of sunshine in their arms, he had let out a shout of joy. Upon hearing the old man’s voice, the puppy wriggled its way out of Rin’s arms and bolted to his human. The old man embraced the puppy, crying in relief. The joyful reunion between the old man and the small golden canine was definitely a tear-jerking spectacle. Umbra, Lily, and Rin were so moved that they bawled their eyes out, but Aeluri had just let a small smile grace her lips as she looked on, maintaining her calm demeanor as usual.

The goodbye between the mages was short but sweet. Aeluri usually just preferred to leave without goodbyes, but she found herself giving the smaller mage a gentle pat on the head in acknowledgement, a display of emotion that surprised herself. Umbra had been hiding behind her legs as the goodbyes were given, unsure if he wanted to say anything. But as the two found themselves walking away from Rin and Lily, he turned and bolted back to the mage and cat-bunny. He gently touched noses with Lily, then turned around and ran back to Aeluri, waving his tail as he went. Aeluri could tell he was slightly embarrassed as they walked on, but she decided not to say anything.

Umbra looked up at his companion and locked gaze with her red and gold eyes. “Hey Aelu?” he asked, hesitating for a second before continuing. “Do you think we’ll ever see them again?”

Aeluri looked up at the path ahead of them. Blue skies hosted clouds that drifted lazily along, dappling the farmland in light and shadow. Cherry blossom trees lined the road, branches swaying in the breeze. Petals fell gently down from the blossoms, creating dancing figures in the breeze. She could almost picture Rin standing on the roadside, observing a pink blossom with Lily sitting on a nearby branch as the petals swirled around them.

With a smile, she looked back down at her feline friend. “I’m sure this is not the last we’ve seen of them,” she replied. Her face suddenly took on a grave expression.

“But I can’t guarantee in the future if we’ll meet as allies or as enemies.”
