Post by Akeya 25th July 2022, 1:30 am

Akeya observed the fort she was planning to destroy from high above, the dragoness taking advantage of her winged nature to do reconnaissance from far up in the sky where not only would she have an unequalled view, but it would be impossible for the opposition to spot her as well. However, just to be safe she'd also weaved light and dark around herself to create a veil within which nothing could be seen, to ensure that the only way she could be spotted would be if the people in the fort had extraordinary sensory capabilities as well as magic-piercing sight.

As one could expect of Minstrel, the fort was a formidable one, with tall, straight walls, and large towers from which defenders could launch attacks on any besiegers without having to fear any retaliation. Siege weapons might be a threat, but those walls had been reinforced with magic which had been stacked over the years: to break through that one would have to bring a truly formidable host, and if such a large army appeared on the fort's doorstep, or some kind of superweapon, the fort would perform its task of slowing down the enemy and sending a warning deeper into Minstrel's territory so the army could mobilize to repel the invaders.

Being the frontier that kept the enemy at bay was a job where one should be prepared to sacrifice themselves, but it looked like Minstrel's soldiers would do their best to make any sacrifice they made worthwhile. If this fort could hold off a force ten times as large as the garrison it was effective. If it could delay a force a hundred times as large as the garrison it had performed its duty admirably. There was no such thing as a truly impenetrable fortress: one could only seek to be as effective as possible.

That Akeya was planning to eliminate this fort by herself was, in a way, an acknowledgement that she had to cause as much havoc as possible to do her part in driving the Ironheart Pact to its knees.

The news from Bellum had been concerning: the Pergrande army was even larger than which had been predicted based on how the border clashes had proceeded. While Pergrande certainly had displayed superior technology and manpower they had still been driven back by superior skill, both martial and magical, from Bellum's army and those who'd stepped forward to support them. Akeya wasn't one to be optimistic, but by her calculations Pergrande's forces wouldn't have been capable of invading Bellum in force without suffering crippling losses as long as Bellum's allies remained loyal. However, this new host which had crossed the mountains and was moving deeper into the religious nation's territory was of a staggering size, and where before their superior technology hadn't extended beyond the equipment of their soldiers they now brought machines that left only scorched earth in their path.

The situation was dire, as it was clear that everyone had underestimated Pergrande. Akeya didn't care much for this, since it meant that she now had to be genuinely concerned that those thaumaphobic authoritarians would have both the will and the means to make life difficult for her. The fact that other people would also suffer at the hands of Pegrande's fanaticism wasn't ideal either, but the dragoness knew where her priorities lay.

Of course, Bellum's allies weren't necessarily any better. Akeya wasn't as staunchly opposed to slavery as most people who'd consider themselves ethical or decent, but she didn't care much for it either even if her position was more based on individualism. While one could benefit from having a couple of servants around who possessed peculiar and distinct abilities to cover your own weaknesses, for the most part relying on others to do all the work for you spoke of a certain kind of weakness, if not practical then mental.

So the fact that Desierto was using this opportunity to invade Minstrel and enslave as many citizens as possible was not something Akeya felt particularly motivated to take part in, which was why she was here all alone, circling high above the fort that she'd designated for elimination. The Desiertan forces could focus on filling their pockets with fresh enforced manual labourers, she'd keep her eyes on the war effort. Once this fort's garrison had been wiped out the larger armies and raiding parties could more easily penetrate the Minstrel plains. This in turn would allow them to intercept any attempts from Minstrel to assist Pergrande's invasion of Bellum, so the Luminous Covenant's main forces could remain focused solely on the massive technological army that was bearing down on them from the north-east.

Akeya frowned invisibly as her thoughts went back to the Pergrande army. She was pretty sure that even with these new machines she'd be able to do some serious damage to the northern empire if she dedicated all she had to it, but she was but a single dragon, and not powerful enough that she could lay waste to a country by herself. A single city might be possible as long as she didn't attract attention from any powerful foes, but... well, she hoped that the Luminous Covenant figured out a way to deal with that army. She didn't want to abandon Ishgar, but if Pergrande won this continent-scale war she'd have to seek her fortunes elsewhere. Probably better to figure out where Leila was at the moment as well and warn her that Ishgar was no longer welcoming magical entities such as the child of eden.

But all this worrying about a scenario which hadn't happened yet was distracting her from the task at hand. Eliminate the fort, and after that she could think about what to do next. Maybe she could annihilate another fort, or she could move towards Bellum and see if she could do something about Pergrande's supply lines. No matter how mighty that host might be, if they didn't receive any supplies any standing army turned into a large gathering of starving people. The machines... well, she'd have to figure out what fuelled them, since Pergrande didn't rely on magic. Hopefully those could also be disabled by hitting the supply lines.

Post by Akeya 25th July 2022, 1:47 am

Down below the fort was occupied by what Akeya imagined was a standard force, most likely waiting for reinforcements so they would be better equipped to handle threats from Desierto. While Minstrel was allied with Pergrande the ruthless raiding from the desert nation had forced them on the defensive, which was another reason to keep adding pressure and cause trouble. If Akeya could cause a mess on herself while the Desiertan raiding parties were doing their work somewhere else the Minstrel forces would be stretched thin, and any military power, no matter how mighty, would start to show cracks if they were forced to be in too many places at the same time. Logistics were one of the main weaknesses of any organization, so to disable any organization you made them deal with as many issues simultaneously as possible and make them consume resources as quickly and as diversely as possible.

There was no signal from the fort below that they'd detected the invisible dragon yet as she dove down from the heavens above, her wings pressed against her body as she accelerated faster and faster. Normally she'd have augmented her speed with either light or dark, but she didn't want to be reckless only to find out that the fort had some special methods for defending against blatantly magical intrusions. The fortified structure down below quickly grew in size as she descended, larger and large until it went from the size of a jewel to the size of, well, an actual fort. Akeya narrowed her eyes as she calculated how long she could maintain this free dive before she'd hit the ground and make a crater. While that would be an interesting method for causing damage to the fort, she didn't want to turn herself into a pancake.

Instead she shifted just before she hit the ground in the middle of the fort, disappearing and reappearing within the shadows of one of those large, proud towers the Minstrelians relied on for protection. She'd shifted herself into a storage room of sorts, where ammunitions for the siege weapons installed on top of the towers were kept. As she stood up the dragoness's piercing eyes went over the crates and bags that were stacked in a semi-organized fashion, some of them looking like they hadn't been touched for months, or even years. The peace within Ishgar had been kept for so long that not every country was equally prepared for war. Minstrel wasn't some pacifistic nation without military potential: in fact, they were probably one of the most militant. But even they couldn't avoid being affected by the peaceful times that had preceded this latest war, and this fort was an example of this.

Still, better to be thorough in her work and ensure that even if a new garrison replaced the one she was about to eliminate they wouldn't have the resources to fend off a Desiertan raiding party. Placing one clawed hand against one of the few spots of wall which weren't covered by crates Akeya focused on the shadows which filled the room. The shadows slowly grew darker as she wove her magic carefully and cautiously, keeping the flow of magic to an absolute minimum so she wouldn't be detected by the people outside of this room. She could sense that there were other people inside this tower, either patrolling or keeping their position, and her fin-like ears perked up as she caught the sound of one of them moving around one floor above her. It was a good thing that Minstrel wasn't one of the nations known for their near-universal magical talent, like Bellum, otherwise remaining hidden while casting any kind of magic would be nearly impossible.

As the shadow darkened they spread out and covered the floor, turning stone into an abyss which one could sink into. As a matter of fact, that was exactly what was happening to all the items in the room: as if slowly disappearing into quicksand or the depths of a swamp, the crates and bags began to descend, disappearing into the shadows without making a sound. As if the entire floor was descending below the dark pit that Akeya had created rather than individual items being moved. She'd store these items and deposit them somewhere else later, possibly giving them to the Desiertans so they could use them or sell them for profit. For the moment, however, the most important part was making sure that they were no longer in the fort.

Akeya herself stood on top of the dark as if it was just as solid as the floor it had covered, her clawed feet sending unseen ripples across the dark every time she shifted her weight. It was only after she was alone in the room that she pulled her hand back and everything returned to normal, sans all the stored items that were nowhere to be seen any more.

While this was a good start, Akeya hadn't come here to steal materiel. She'd come here to turn a fort's worth of living beings into a a pile of corpses. Although she should probably get rid of the corpses as well afterwards: it was one thing to commit murder, it was another to stink the place up with rotting flesh.

Three gunners and two sword users were in the tower. Akeya could hear their movements, and through the mixture of dark and light that formed a pattern throughout space and time she could see them as well. The three gunners were on top of the tower, looking out over the plains that surrounded the fort, while one of the sword users was resting and the other was pacing in the room above Akeya's head. The gunners didn't have any magic, but their weapons were enchanted and designed to utilize enchanted ammunition. Probably nothing too problematic, but still better to get rid of them all at the same time. The sword user above her head did possess magic, so that one would have to be eliminated first. The sword user resting higher up in the tower wasn't paying any attention it seemed, so they would get dealt with last. It was also important to get rid of the gunners before they could alert anyone else in the fort.

Slipping into the shadows Akeya shifted one floor up, her frame invisible as she stepped out of the dark right behind the pacing sword user. She didn't waste any time in striking, as the sword user had already sensed her magic and was spinning around in alarm while drawing her sword. The dragoness had the element of surprise, however, and her talons sliced through the female human's throat before the sword could completely leave its scabbard. Her first victim's body first tensed, then relaxed as strength quickly left it. Blood spilt from her neck, and when she opened her mouth to desperately draw in some air a sanguine foam escaped her lips. Slowly the swordswoman collapsed, unable to make anything but the slightest of motions in an attempt to do something, anything, before life left her and she became nothing more than a corpse.

One down, and she still had quite a lot of people to go. No time to act all grim about the death she'd just caused either. Now that she'd begun her assault speed would be the new priority: magic users in the fort would begin to notice her no matter how cautious she was being, so she should take them all out before they had time to react.

There weren't any shadows large enough to hold Akeya at the top of the tower, so instead the twilight dragon turned into a streak of light that shot out of the room and onto the staircase that circled the entirety of the tower. Bouncing from wall to wall she made her way upwards, materializing at the very top to slice her way through the trapdoor that blocked her path.

The gunners on top of the wall were already turning around and levelling their guns when Akeya appeared, one of them even managing to fire a shot before Akeya could take them out. The dragoness let out a short hiss as she turned back into an avatar of light for a split second to move to the side and evade the bullet. Clenching her fist she manifested the shadows of the gunners themselves, black spikes rising up from between their own feet to impale them all the way from their groin to the top of their head. Their bodies spasmed before Akeya released her magic, after which they all fell down like dolls who had their strings cut. That was four down, and one more to go before the tower was clear.

Her fin-like ears twitched again as she listened to the sounds of the resting sword user waking up. No doubt he'd heard the sounds of his fellow guards being taken out, as the gunners had managed to let out some shocked and pained shrieks before their life left them. Not ideal. Akeya dove through the trapdoor into the shadows of the staircase, and from there on shifted into the last swordsman's room.

It looked like a resting station of sorts, but Akeya didn't have the time to inspect it thoroughly. The man getting out of bed didn't have any magical affinity, and since he wasn't standing on guard like the gunners on top he wasn't as alert, his brain still recovering from the nap he'd been enjoying before things started going horribly wrong for him and his compatriots. Akeya swiped with her claw, and a shadow extended from the wall behind the swordsman to neatly remove his head from his body like a guillotine. For several seconds the body continued trying to get up before it realized that it had lost its head, at which point it slumped over and didn't move.

That was five down, and the tower had been emptied. Four more towers to go, after which the bastion would be left. Closing her eyes Akeya briefly counted all the magic presences in the fort. Six more magic presences, two of which were in the bastion and significantly more formidable. The other four were close to that of the swordswoman she'd killed first. However, there were more people than that in the garrison, including civilians.

Well, they were still helping man the fort, and Akeya wasn't about to leave them alive so they could send a warning of what had happened. Normally she prided herself on only killing those who needed killing, even considering it a challenge to keep everyone else alive and unknowing of what had occurred until after she'd long since left, but this time her target was everyone in the fort.

The second tower proceeded much like the first, although there were only two gunners at the top and both of the sword wielders were awake this time. Akeya didn't bother trying to remain hidden while moving between the towers: instead she found a convenient shadow in the next tower and shifted herself to it, even if it did also mean that she appeared right in front of one of the sword wielders.

Bringing up her scaled hand to deflect the first sword strike Akeya pierced the man's stomach with her tail, then tore out his throat with her other clawed hand while he stumbled backwards. Holding his stomach and his throat the man kept stumbling, croaking helplessly as he channelled his magic in an attempt to heal himself. The dragoness put an end to that by slicing through his neck and hand alike, decapitating the man to put a permanent end to his attempts at survival. However, as soon as she'd done this the door slammed open and the other sword wielder stepped forward, sword already in hand and charging Akeya as soon as the dragoness was spotted.

Akeya's emerald eyes sharpened as she ducked under a thrust, then leaned to the left to evade a horizontal strike. This swordsman was quite aggressive but guarded at the same time, giving her little opening to target any of his vulnerable spots. Holding up her hand Akeya caught the man's sword, but rather than being surprised by this development he immediately kicked her, forcing her to block the kick with her tail. Her tail then quickly wrapped itself around the man's leg and pulled him forward, his desperate attempts at keeping his balance leaving him wide open so Akeya could, again, cut cleanly through his throat and let him fall down on top of his colleague.

She'd have liked to take her time with the gunners, but time was something she didn't have the luxury of wasting any more. Fortunately this tower had a nice large shadow, courtesy of the position of the sun and some of the crenellations. Shifting straight on top of the structure Akeya formed two small, pitch-black spheres and launched them at the speed of a bullet, penetrating the skull of one of the gunners and leaving a hole in the chest of the other.

That was nine down total, and quite a bit more to go. She'd now eliminated two of the seven magically inclined people in the fort, although the last two were going to be a bit more of a headache. Well, no matter: she'd kill them all the same, even if it took a bit longer.

With two towers having been emptied of all life it wouldn't take long before the alarm would be sounded. Akeya considered using a widespread attack to wipe out everyone in the fort at once... but such a thing could leave you open for a counter-attack. Better to play it safe and rely on speed and ambush tactics. The next tower had the same composition of defenders as this one, although for some reason one of the sword wielders was on top of the tower together with the gunners. And it was the one with the magical affinity as well, so Akeya would have to deal with that even as the marksmen would be trying to put holes in her.

The dragoness rolled her eyes as she shifted into the shadows of the next tower, appearing above the swordsman who was doing some paperwork and grabbing him by the throat. Spinning him around and pressing him against the wall Akeya formed a shadow guillotine between her scaled fingers, pulling her hand back as head and body fell separately. Her fin-like ears twitched as she turned around to look at a man who looked paralyzed by her presence, his eyes wide and his face white from terror as he'd seen what had just transpired. A clerk of sorts, either delivering or taking away some papers that the swordsman would have been working with.

    Unfortunate soul.

[Event] A Murder of Musketeers (Akeya Kuusai) Empty Re: [Event] A Murder of Musketeers (Akeya Kuusai)

Post by Akeya 25th July 2022, 2:42 am

Eleven people were eliminated. Akeya raced up the staircase as a streak of light, the nicely curved walls allowing for her to smoothly make her way upwards and burst out of the trapdoor, only to immediately dodge a blindingly fast sword strike which made the air whistle. In fact, there was wind magic wrapped around the sword so it would not be slowed down by air resistance and be as light as air itself, allowing for rapid attacks without wearing down the wielder.

As she ducked to evade the attack Akeya shifted to the sight to evade two gunshots as the gunners made their move. Her eyes narrowed as she placed her clawed hand against the ground, and once more shadows turned into spikes that perforated their own creators. The swordsman, however, managed to evade the spike, slicing through it with his sword before extending the slash downwards to try and hit Akeya with it as well. Without magic, these swords weren't powerful enough to easily pierce her scales, but Akeya could tell that this man had trained his magic well enough that if she allowed herself to get hit it'd hurt. Would it be fatal? That highly depended on where exactly she was hit.

The easiest answer to that was to not get hit. Shifting further to the side to evade the attack Akeya summoned her own weapon, a dark, dagger-like creation extended from a string that attached itself to the dragoness's hand. The swordsman wisely did not wait for her to strike with it, instead pulling his sword back and thrusting straight at her chest to both hit a vital point and make it difficult for her to dodge.

With a flick of her hand, Akeya brought her weapon forward, the string wrapping itself around the sword while remaining miraculously uncut. As the dagger at the tip of her thread sliced through the man's wrist Akeya pulled, the sword forcibly wrested from her opponent's hand. As blood poured over his hand the man bit his lip and pulled out the dagger at his side to continue fighting, wind whirling around the smaller blade. His movements halted, however, when he found that the dragoness's tail had embedded itself into his stomach, and as he looked up at her he became the latest victim to have his throat opened up through impromptu surgery.

Fourteen people down, three of seven magic users eliminated. Now that she was closer to the bastion she could tell there were some other magic users present, but they were too weak to be a serious threat. Still, better to make sure she killed them all as quickly as possible: it would be highly embarrassing if she was hindered by some magically inclined civilian, let alone actually injured or driven off.

Unfortunately, this time she had been spotted by someone in the courtyard, as the swordsman's attacks had forced her to step close enough to the edge of the tower. A loud yell filled the air, leaving Akeya to hiss in dissatisfaction. Maybe she really should have just taken it slow and easy, but it was too late to wonder that now. Better to review after, once she was done turning this fort into a graveyard.

She couldn't immediately shift to the top of the fourth and last tower due to the lack of shadows, so she shifted to the bottom floor instead so she could work her way up. As she made for the staircase, however, a woman with a sword clad in flames came bearing down upon her, bringing the emblazoned weapon down with a fury. Akeya danced backwards and flicked her hand to send her own weapon at the swordswoman, but she struck the dagger out of the air before stepping forward and executing a large, diagonal slash that would have torn right through Akeya's torso if the dragoness hadn't raised a hand and produced a prismatic barrier, light and dark swirling around her as the flames of the woman's blade failed to burn through the shield.

Hearing the sounds of more footsteps Akeya acted quickly. Half a dozen spheres formed behind her, pitch-black and highly condensed, which then shot forward to strike the woman's head, torso, and limbs. While the fencer managed to deflect the spheres headed for her upper body she was forced onto her knees as her legs were pierced, after which a quick flick of Akeya's hand embedded her own dagger in the woman's skull.

Letting go of the dagger for now Akeya dashed forward to meet her next opponent, the other fencer stationed at this tower. Not having expected the dragoness to eliminate his colleague so quickly the fencer did his best to drive Akeya back with a series of quick thrusts, but the twilight dragon turned into a streak of light and moved overhead, then behind the fencer. Rematerializing, her tail tore through the back of the man's skull and shredded his brain even as the dragoness was already making her way further up the staircase, pulling her tail back in before once again acting as a ping-pong ball made of light to quickly ascend the tower.

The two soldats located at the top of this tower knew what was coming for them, or at least knew that something was coming for them. When Akeya burst out of the trapdoor one of them shot, and when the dragoness flashed to the side to evade the two others shot. The dragoness hissed as she felt one of the bullets biting into her arm while the other went through the scaled membrane of her wing. Neither of these bullets had been enchanted with dragon slayer magic, so the damage wasn't too great, but the one that had struck her arm was eating at her flesh as if it had been made from acid.

Another half a dozen black spheres formed, and each of the two gunners got one sphere through the head, one straight into the barrel of their gun, and another through the torso. With that, the fourth tower was secured, and the bastion was the only fortified position left. There were three magical presences worth noticing in the core of the fort, one of similar strength as the sword wielders that Akeya had been eliminating, one significantly stronger than that, and one even stronger than that.

Arguably, now that the secret was out and the fort was aware that its garrison was getting wiped out, subterfuge was no longer worthwhile. However, Akeya didn't want to face the remaining combatants in a straight-up fight: she could win that, but it was too much of a hassle, especially since the three magic users that could put up a fight were all gathered so she'd have to deal with all three at once. This also meant that they provided her with a good opportunity: if they were all gathered she could take them all out in one attack, although it'd have to be a pretty destructive attack to ensure that they wouldn't be able to defend themselves against it.

Standing on top of the fourth tower Akeya narrowed her eyes. There might be other combatants left, although by her count she'd now killed nine soldats and eight fencers. A relatively small force, but then again, this was a relatively small fort, more of an outpost meant to keep an eye out for trouble and send a warning to the main military if trouble did show up.

That said, two of the magic presences still remaining were significant enough that they might be able to hold their own against a force that the eighteen people Akeya had killed so far wouldn't have been able to do anything about. One, in particular, gave her a bad feeling...

How important was it that this fort remain intact? The Desiertan forces were unlikely to use it: they had no interest in claiming this territory so far as she was aware, they just wanted to steal as many resources as they could and capture as many slaves as possible. The positioning of the fort was also not ideal for the Desiertans: a river crossed right in front of it between the fort and Desierto, which meant that attacking it on foot was difficult for the raiders while making it easy for Minstrel to surround it from all sounds with ground and naval forces. Behind the fort, towards Minstrel's inland, there was nought but plains, little in the way of favourable defensive territory if one were trying to protect the fort against Minstrel.

Overall, it didn't seem like she had to worry too much about keeping this place in one piece. She wasn't fond of more destructive measures, but sometimes they were justified.

Taking several steps back so she wouldn't be visible from the bastion, Akeya closed her eyes and raised both hands to summon another prismatic barrier. Where the sun touched the barrier all sorts of colours danced and swirled, but where shadow fell the barrier was dark and foreboding.

Placing her hands together Akeya channelled her magic, creating light in one clawed hand and dark in the other. She controlled both forces, but that just made her keenly aware of the absolute contrast between the two. Direct opposites, eternally in conflict unless forced into unison through unorthodox means. If you had an equal force of light and an equal force of dark, the division between the two of them would be so absolute as to form a line which symbolized division on a conceptual level.

    "Horizon"

From her extended hands, tightly pressed together, came a two-dimensional ripple that expanded rapidly in front of her. The ripple passed through everything as if it didn't interact with matter at all, but wherever it had passed there was a line finer than a hair and straighter than any ruler. It went through stone, wood, metal, and flesh without regard, and with Akeya's hands having been aimed at the bastion, at the magic presences gathered there to oppose her, it passed through that large structure and its inhabitants as well. It moved at such speed that in the blink of an eye it had already moved beyond the fort, at which point it quickly faded away as Akeya had carefully calculated how much energy to put into the attack so she wouldn't start carving lines in the ground.

Maintaining her prismatic sphere in case a counter-attack followed Akeya focused on the pattern of light and dark inside the fort. Two of the three magic presences were quickly fading, the bodies housing that power having been bisected along with any armour and weapons they might have hoped to defend themselves with. The last one, the most powerful one, had reacted in time to only lose his legs, but without legs there was little he could do to defend himself... as long as she didn't give him time to recover.

This time Akeya raised one claw, and this time she only summoned the dark. All the shadows within the bastion darkened, the only and last warning the inhabits received before the dragoness clenched her first in a surging release of magic power.

    "Tall Shadows"

Every shadow within the bastion extended into a black spear, striking at the nearest lifeform, often the lifeform which had given birth to the shadow. The civilians had managed to escape Akeya's attention so far because they weren't in the towers, but now that she was attacking the entirety of the bastion at once they suffered the same fate as the combatants. The man who would have posed the greatest obstacle for the dragoness managed to slice through the spears as they shot towards him with blinding speed and accuracy, each slash releasing magical lighting that dashed from shadow to shadow, but as Akeya poured more magic behind the attack dark spears began to pierce floor, walls, and ceiling to strike at the nobleman from all sides at once, more than either his sword or his lightning could deflect.

Once Akeya's assault came to an end the nobleman had been pierced many times, scarcely recognizable. In comparison, his subordinates and the civilians who kept the fort running had been killed in a relatively clean way, but Akeya couldn't afford to be careless with this man. Even after he lost his legs he'd still managed to protect himself against an attack that would have killed most people instantly, so while she didn't think she'd have lost a fight she was pleased that she managed to not have to put her confidence to the test.

Now, all that remained was to dispatch of whatever troops had managed to escape her notice so far, steal whatever resources and materiel were present in the fort, and leave the bisected outpost to either be reclaimed by Minstrel or collapse as the bastion had been ravaged quite thoroughly by her final attack.

Either way, she'd done her part in making things difficult for Minstrel and easier for Desierto
