"Say, V-1, how far away are we now?"

Vanguard-1, the pearl-white drone, rose up approximately ten feet into the air, performed a 180-degree turn, then returned itself to the one who'd given its command; a young woman with equally pearly-white hair and ocean-blue eyes who was currently garbed in black bodysuit that was mostly covered by a white suit-like jacket and skirt and white knee-high boots.

"Exactly a hundred and thirty two meters, Kyra." the drone responded in a gentle male voice, surprising a few of the people nearby who hadn't expected the drone to actually speak, let alone have a proper voice to go with it. "Take the next left."

Kyra smiled broadly. "Thanks." The girl began walking forward, the next left being a short distance away. "Gods it's a good thing I have you with me V-1! My heart is pounding!" she stated to her flying companion, who gave a gentle beep in response - sometimes speaking was unnecessary and a simple robotic response was sufficient. "Good answer. I'm glad that adjustment has worked out for you. It upsets me when you trip over your words." she continued, before turning to the left and turning her head to look in front of her. It took everything in her power not to stop dead in her tracks as she walked towards the large building before her - The Magic Council and the home of the Rune Knights. She'd seen it before of course; her parents had both had their involvement with the Rune Knights and this building. But today was different. Today she was following in their footsteps...no...no she was doing more than that. Today marked the day she would begin her journey to greatness. Today was the day she would make them proud.

It was these thoughts that pushed her onwards - albeit in silence - down the street in front of her and up the steps to the great building that would soon become her home.

Post by DOPPO 17th May 2020, 10:33 am

It was in the middle of the afternoon. The sun was hovering in the center of the cloudy sky, the streets bustled with chatter and footsteps, and a cool breeze danced through Era. It was a city that was seldom silent, and like Era, the Rune Knight HQ was never quiet either.

Somewhere in HQ, the Combat Corps darted back and forth from room to room, and in the center of it all was a congregation of overtly athletic and deceptively tough-looking men and women. Many of them were sitting at desks and cubicles, while others were leaning against walls and hanging in corners. Most were occupied, and some were not. Among those people were two staff sergeants, holding paper cups and huddled in a corner.

"Did you hear about that case the Lieutenant Commander took on the other day?"

"The couple where one committed suicide and the other went insane? Pretty crazy, right?"

"Yeah. But you know, the weird thing about it is that when we went in to question him, the guy seemed happy for her! Kept talking about this "Soul Merchant" person. That's all he'd talk about."

"Poor guy. No wonder he went insane. His girlfriend just kicked the bucket. Just like that—"

"—Excuse me..." said Doppo, standing just between the two staff sergeants so they could allow him to pass by. He was an average-height, lanky man with messy red hair and baggy baby blue eyes. He had a perpetual slouch and noticeable bags beneath his eyes. He was somewhat skinny, perpetually lethargic, and always spoke in a low, quiet voice. It was hard to believe that such a fatigued man was the Major General at first glance. Meanwhile, frightened by the abrupt appearance of his messy red hair, both of the staff sergeants suddenly moved aside.

"Major General Suzuki! We didn't see you, sir!" said one of them. The other looking at the folder snug between his arm and armpit curiously.

    "Going out, sir?" they asked.

"Smoke." Doppo slowly slid between them and made his way down the hall.

When he stepped outside, the first place he sat was on the first step leading down the plateau, overlooking most of Era. He placed the folder on his lap and quickly plucked a cigarette from its pack, lighting it, and blowing the small grey cloud out with a long, strung out puff. The man had a lot on his mind these days. He had been spending a lot of time looking for family homes in Era, or at least nearby, in preparation for the multiple kids he was going to have with Onida. The pregnancy wasn't planned, and the redhead didn't have any time to financially prepare for them either. Could he even afford a family as big as the one he was going to have? And what about Onida? Their relationship was founded on flings and if he was asked if he had loved her, he knew that his answer would be no. Even if they had tried to fill the gaps with romance before their kids were born, it probably wouldn't work out. Worst of all, he hadn't found the time or energy to tell a single soul about their pregnancy either. Not Sheldon, not Hilda, no one.

This headspace made his head hurt, but it was all he can think about. He rolled up his hand over his hair, massaging his temples as the smoke embraced him, stressing about his stress alone. Or, so he thought.

Scaling the stairs was a girl and a robot, making their way to their Headquarters. As usual, she was most likely here to join or to report a crime and judging by the way she carried herself, it was probably the former. She seemed like a chipper girl and seemed far more enthusiastic than he was feeling right now.

"Hey... can I help you...?" he said to her, sitting there and staring at her with his droopy eyes as she approached.

So focused had Kyra been on fighting her nerves that the pearly-haired girl had almost passed a man in uniform sat upon the steps without even noticing him, which was made even more embarrassing by the fact that his hair was bright red - in complete contrast to the white marble steps she was walking up. Fortunately for her the man was more aware of his surroundings than she was, as his questioning voice broke the would-be engineer out of her trance almost immediately. Her head turned to face the man and she bowed slightly out of respect. It also gave her the opportunity to finally drive those nerves away. It's now or never Kiki!

She straightened herself up with a small smile. "Hello. My name is Kyra Forte. I have heard that the Engineering Corps are recruiting at the moment." she replied with a confidence that completely betrayed how she was really feeling right - a nervous wreck. Nonetheless she was holding up fine so far. "I have come to enlist to the Rune Knights, with the intention of entering into the Engineering Corps. I have all of my credentials with me."

Gods, talking like this was more difficult than she'd been prepared for. But remaining professional was crucial right now; one slip of the tongue, one misinterpretation or mistimed joke or comment, and her career would be over before it had even begun. Sure, she could get a good job anywhere as an engineer - whilst she wasn't egotistical in the slightest, she knew full well that anyone would take her on in an instance courtesy of the grades she achieved and her unique knowledge and technological advances in spite of her youth. But nowhere else would be good enough for her. It was the Rune Knights or bust. So she'd have to keep this professional persona for as long as it took, even if that meant for her entire career.

"I can already see that you are in uniform. May I ask, how should I address you sir?"

The girl introduced herself as Kayla Forte, and she looked nice enough. Well, she looked it, but she sounded almost robotic. While he wasn't one to judge others for their way of holding conversations, Kayla spoke as if reading off of a script. The redhead noticed this, and as usual, he didn't care.

Kayla went straight to the point. In fact, she had been so prepared for this that she had even pinpointed the department she wanted to be promoted into, which was something the average new recruit took a little over a week to decide. Unlike people before her and likely many to come, getting her enlisted would likely be brief.

"Mm. Major General Suzuki... but you can call me Doppo, if you'd like..." he responded quietly, letting the last puff of smoke fall out of his mouth before tossing it on the ground and crushing it beneath his heel as he got up. He took the folder from his lap and tucked it back away between his arm, looking over at Kayla. "Follow me..."

The Major General led Kayla back to his shared office, sitting down at his unimpressive desk. There were a litany of odd and out of place things on it, like an unopened box of women's fertility tea, magnetic marbles, and a blue stress ball. He pulled out a familiar folder, placing it across from him with a pen to accompany it.

"Just some general information... you gotta fill it out, Ms. Forte..." he invited her lackadaisically, slouching in his chair.

This man - a Major General he'd said - was not at all as Kyra had pictured a man of such high standing to be. Naturally everyone was entitled to be relaxed in their workplace to some degree, but this was beyond that. This felt almost like...apathy? Whatever the case, it was a stark contrast to how she'd been speaking to him moments before, and a far cry from what the pearly-haired maiden had been expecting. Still, if he was a Major General then she'd have to keep herself in line. She swallowed the words she wanted to say and simply nodded. She wasn't about to refer to him as 'Doppo' though. That seemed far too informal, even if his general attitude suggested that he preferred it. He beckoned for her to enter the building with him, and she obliged with a somewhat quieter "Yes sir." Vanguard-1 followed in behind her, the gentle buzzing of his rotor blades almost a comfort to her.

The duo and the drone made a short walk through the building - with Kyra taking a keen interest in her surroundings as she walked, resulting in her taking numerous knocks to the side of the head by V-1 to keep her moving forwards - and eventually they came to what seemed to be some kind of a shared office. They stopped at a somewhat untidy and unconventionally decorated desk that, Kyra assumed, belonged to the Major General as he plopped a file on the surface in front of him and slumped himself into his chair.

Forget apathetic, the man was eccentric at best and a complete oddity at worst. He opened the folder out in front of him and placed a pen next to it, before informing the would-be recruit that she would need to fill in some details. After taking one more look around the desk, curious on what else was on there that would give some indicator as to what kind of man the Major General was, she nodded once more and took the pen, beginning to fill in the paperwork.

Vanguard-1 meanwhile lowered himself gently onto the desk next to the file, his rotors slowing to a complete stop and his camera focusing on the file that Kyra was filling out. A small red light appeared on the top of the drone as a voice came from it.
    "Collecting data.
    Scanning..."

    "Quietly please, V-1."
    "Sorry Mistress.

    ...beep...

    ...beep...

    ...beepbeep."

The red light turned green and a shutter closed over the camera lens as Kyra finished writing and placed the pen down. She turned the file around so that it was facing the Major General, then stepped back and stood with her hands behind her back, standing at attention.

"Is there anything else you require of me, sir?"

For the entire time Kayla was filling out the information, Doppo was slouching over his desk and watching her carefully. One of the first things people noticed about him was not only his eccentricity, but his lack of understanding social cues. Staring, speaking too candidly, and much more that only scraped the tip of the iceberg of his oddity.

"Mm-mm. I'll take it from here..." Doppo shook his head, lifting up the papers and glancing at the text scribbled in between it. Needless to say, she wasn't lying. She had all of the credentials she needed, and if it was really all true, then she'd be a lovely addition to their Engineering Corps. "If you join us, you'll start out as a private... but I think you'll get promoted into the E.C. quickly if you do well..." he quietly explained, his voice droning on as if just waking up from a deep slumber, "You can look around too if you want..."

Doppo placed the papers back on the desk and looked at Kayla. Eighteen, was she? When he was eighteen, he was still working as a cook, building up his savings so he could leave Motor City and build a new life somewhere away from his mother. He used his skills and abilities to solve problems for other people, compensated for his work, and eventually joined Sabertooth to make finding those jobs even easier. That was how he expected his life to unfold—making end's meet, just enough jewels to put food on his table, and he didn't mind it. But now he was an officer in the Rune Knights, and while one might think that a man as lazy and inexpressive as him wouldn't be a nice fit for this job, he loved it more than anything—and he was good at it.

There was a long pause between them, and just before Kayla could take her leave, Doppo leaned back into his chair and closed his eyes. "It's good that you know what you want..."

Kyra watched the Major General for a moment as he glanced down the page that she'd just filled, the nerves in the pit of her stomach creeping back up a little. Not many people believed her when she made claims to her abilities and, whilst she had proof with her, it was still a little unnerving having someone look over your details and not knowing what they were thinking. After a few moments he began talking to her, although his tone suggested there was some boredom there. He explained her new job to her; she would start as a Private, the lowest rank. She knew this of course and had expected nothing less. Just because her parents had been a part of the Rune Knights, it didn't mean she'd get any preferential treatment, and she was glad for that. But what the man said next caught the girl off-guard; he'd made a comment about her getting promoted into the Engineer Corps quickly if she did well. Needless to say she'd intended to work her ass off, and chances are that his comment was the same comment he'd use on every new recruit, but it was nice to hear nonetheless.

The Major General looked up at her now, seemingly taking her in for the first time since they'd first met on the entrance steps. Kyra wasn't really sure what to say or do at this point. Were they done? Did he have more that he needed to say to her, or inform her of? There wasn't really much to cover right now that hadn't already been covered in the form she'd filled out, at least not until she got into the Engineer Corps proper. He'd said she could look around but, to be honest, she'd done a lot of looking around when she came in. She could go and visit the workshops that the Engineers worked in of course, but she didn't really want to interrupt their work - Gods knew she hated being interrupted. But it was better than standing here waiting. She was about to take her leave when the older man leaned back and closed his eyes, stating that it was good that she knew what she wanted. She smiled back in response. "Having a goal helps me to focus." she replied simply before bowing her head. "If I may, sir, I shall take my leave."

With that, Kyra stepped away from the desk and Vanguard-1's rotors hummed back to life, the unusual duo heading back out towards the engineering workshops. Curiosity had gotten the better of her.
