    Well this was new.

Vandrad had come to the job board with the intent of doing his daily routine. After he had finished his morning workout, he would clean himself up, grab some food to eat and then meander to the board in hopes of finding something to pass the time. It seemed a bit odd, even to him, that he had settled into this kind of routine within the confines of the guild. He had come here with a singular goal – of learning more about his father and if he happened to remain alive. And he still intended on pursuing his answers; with the help of the insufferable bitch known as Mercury, he had learned quite a bit about the former Rune Knight’s past. He had also discovered that there was a Mythal Ragnos currently operating as the Director of the Rune Knights. What the familial connection was there, he couldn’t quite tell but it was a source of information no doubt. Seemingly it should have been a fairly easy assumption that the Prince’s next step was to go to Era and talk to Mythal.

But he had paused. It wasn’t for any mistrust of Mercury – as infuriating as she was, she had proven to be honest with him through their two interactions thus far. Plus he had seen the articles she used as references with his own two eyes. But it had all come into the light fairly easy. It was possible that the circumstances were truly quite random and beneficial but Vandrad had never believed in such luck. He’d left rather quickly from his home in Bellum without leaving much of a message behind. But his family would no doubt have an idea of where he was going – his mother had only recently informed him of his true means of birth. Perhaps she had gotten ahead of him and planted certain seeds of misinformation. It wasn’t beyond her; he’d seen the way she smoothly navigated the courts of Bellum. As a woman who didn’t like to lose and did everything in her power to win, he wouldn’t surprise him if she had pulled some strings to lead him down a path she wanted.

So rather than rush along with his head down, he decided to take a step back. He wanted to watch how things played out – see how the wind changed when he wasn’t charging in without thinking. He was more interesting in seeing if more answers would find their way to him purposefully or if they would come in seemingly coincidental circumstances. Then he would be able to surmise just what was happening. So to that end, he fell into the practice of acting like a full fledged member of Fairy Tail. He went on jobs, he trained in the training hall and he provided a service to clients that better built the rapport of the guild. It was mindless work for the most part but that in turn gave him the clarity to see every angle at the same time.

But there was a sudden intrusion into his practice. He’d come down to the board to find a job and there he had discovered a letter pinned to it, his name written neatly on its face. His brow had furrowed in interest and curiosity – was this simply mail or perhaps something from another guild member? He took a moment to glance around, interested to see if someone had put the envelope there and then stayed near by to watch him. The last thing he needed or wanted was some kind of secret admirer. When he didn’t spot anyone obvious, he finally turned back and pulled the letter down so that he could read the contents inside.

It was not what he expected. Not at all. Apparently one of Fairy Tail’s aces, Nessa Lux, had heard a bit about him from ‘the grapvine’. He imagined that was word among other members. She went on to ask that he take a job for her, as she was going to be out of town. It seemed simple enough a task… until he read what it entailed. It seemed that Fairy Tail took the time to attend local schools in Magnolia, allowing guild wizards to go over and provide lessons for the younger generation. And in this particular instance, Nessa was planned to go over combat training with some of the more… unruly students. Unruly usually translated to smug, abusive little bastards that thought they knew everything about the world. Vandrad scoffed at the thought, even more so when he read that she specifically wanted him to keep the roughness down for the sake of the guild.

He sighed softly as he folded the letter up. It would be unwise to refuse a job handed down specifically from his guild’s ace, as it might prove detrimental to his continued career here. And the prospect of instructing a class on combat wasn’t unattractive – it was the clientele that proved the issue. He had trained all sorts in his time in the military but never outright children. By the time the bright-eyed grunts got to him, they were matured enough to at least understand that following orders was in their best interest. But Vandrad had heard enough about school children to know that he couldn’t just walk in there and immediately be considered an authority figure. He needed to establish dominance from the moment he got there… and somehow still keep from being ‘too rough’.

It was going to be a challenge. He did wonder how Nessa had come across information about his jobs. He knew very little about the Fairy Tail ace, having only done minimal research about his fellow guild mates. Based on what he’d found, she seemed like a true blue sweet woman; a bright purity within the ranks. It was possible she was just that intune with the rest of the guild’s members to have honestly heard about his exploits, though he then wondered how anyone else had heard. His first instinct was to assume that somehow, someway, this was that blasted Mercury’s fault. But he would have to wait to prove that later.

He apparently had a class to teach.

“Class, this is Vandrad. He is going to be helping us today by teaching us some combat moves.”

The happy-go-lucky teacher was overly bright in her introduction, gesturing to the Prince of Bellum like he was some kind of savior. And perhaps that was exactly what he was meant to be – a few hour distraction for the rebellious brats so that this sunshiny woman could regain her sanity. He could only imagine what it was like having to labor some method of teaching these rug rats day in and day out. The fact that she could still put forth a smile and actually have meaning behind it meant she was either a fantastic actor or she truly believed in what she was doing.

Vandrad didn’t care either way. She could probably tell that he wasn’t looking forward to this, as he didn’t hold back his annoyance when meeting her in the front office. She had chattered away at him as she led him through the hallways towards the play area, listing off each student and their specific quirks. She tried to spin them positively, which was a laugh considering they sounded like outright mini-terrorists. Bullying their fellow classmates, verbally abusing teachers, using their magic in dangerous, even destructive ways. By the time they arrived, Vandrad had already realized that if he was going to make any headway with the brats, he was going to have to tip toe the roughness line down to the centimeter.

He set his tights on the nine students, who had made no motion to stand up or prepare themselves for his arrival. They were all lazing about the playground, seemingly far more interested in anything else but him and the teacher… save one. A boy, perhaps twelve years old, was staring right at the Prince with the confidence of a much larger man. What was the name Nessa had listed on the letter? That’s right – Tyler.

“This dwarf with the stupid hair is supposed to teach us how to fight? You sure he ain’t gonna teach us how to mine for diamonds?” The brat spoke up, already giggling to himself at his own joke. The rest followed in the laughter, easily amused at the behest of their supposed leader. Vandrad took note of that quietly.

“Now Tyler, it isn’t very nice to insult Mr. Vandrad. He came all the way here from Fairy Tail to help us out today. He is a true guild wizard!” The teacher explained, once again trying to spin the situation positively.

“Oh gee, when did he leave; last week? I bet it took him forever to get here with those stubby legs of his,” Tyler spoke up again, repeating the same insult/laughter combination he had before.

“Leave us,” Vandrad finally spoke up, not bothering to look at the teacher. No, his gaze was fixated on the jokester among his peers.

“Are you sure, Mr. Vandrad? It might be best if I stay, just to make sure they don’t continue to—”

“Believe me, woman – after today, they won’t cause you anymore trouble. I’m here to teach them; so let me teach.” His voice was stern but he made sure not to come across rude. And it seemed to work; she nodded and with one last look at the students, scurried back to the school to do whatever it was she could do.

Tyler watched her go before letting loose a snort. “Oh so the dwarf can talk all big and scary. Tough shit – I’m not scared of a pissant like you.”

Vandrad’s eyes narrowed slightly but a small smirk pulled on his lips. “Is that so? Then perhaps you’d like to be the first to step up and showcase just how mighty you are.” The Prince gestured to the area in front of him.

Tyler smirked back, the very image of confidence and snark. As he pushed himself off the jungle gym and landed on the ground, he shot nods and winks to his classmates, showing off for those that worshipped him. As he came to stand across from Vandrad, he took a moment to size the Prince up once more. “You sure about this, man? I’d hate to break you so early in the day.”

“Such confidence. You must really be strong then. In that case, I’ll give you one free punch – right here.” Vandrad pointed to his stomach. He even let his body relax, showing that he wasn’t on guard or prepared to be hit.

Tyler grinned. He rolled his arm once, continuing to play up the part of the tough kid, before he ran forward at the Fairy Tail wizard. And then with all the strength that an untrained twelve year old kid could muster, he let loose a punch right into Vandrad’s stomach. The hit connected flat… and stayed there. No depression of the Prince’s flesh, no sudden grunt from his mouth or falling over in agony.

In fact, Vandrad looked down at the fist still pressed against his abdomen. “Is that all? You sounded so much stronger a moment ago. How about another?”

Tyler’s eyebrow twitched in anger. He twisted and sent another punch into Vandrad’s stomach, finding himself in the same result. Furious at his lack of success, he tried to throw a third and final one. This time Vandrad moved out of the way, sending the boy stumbling forwards. The Fairy Tail wizard then stuck out his foot and tripped the unguard brat, causing him to fall flat on his face.

“I said two free hits. And that’s all it took for me to know just how pitifully weak you are,” the Prince admonished the child, casting a glance over his shoulder. “Yet in your overinflated confidence, you tried to take another shot; to take advantage of my generosity. You best understand this right now, whelp – there is always someone standing above you in terms of strength.”

He let that sink in for a moment before he turned back to the stunned faces of the other students. “You lot are known as the bad children. You stand above the others because you are stronger and you use that strength to keep them down. Normally this is an aspect I can respect but my problem with it and you all is that you abuse that strength. You let it inflate your egos, make you perceive the world as your oyster – your plaything. And you will quickly learn once you leave this school that the world is not nice to those that believe themselves infallible. And natural strength only goes so far until someone else comes along to show just how weak you are.” He paused as he scanned each of their faces. “Alternatively, you could use your strength to boost your classmates. Like soldiers, you all face the same routine together and the unit is only as strong as their weakest member. And weakness is unacceptable. You must stomp out the weak inside of them, showing them how to get stronger so that you all stand together. The choice is yours. Now then, boy,” he said, turning back to Tyler. “Get up. How about instead of running that mouth of yours, I show you how to properly defend yourself?”
