    White light.

That is what Ahote saw. White light. He did not just see it, he was submerged in the ivory void, a sudden calmness washed over him. But what was this feeling? This overwhelming feeling of emptiness? Before he knew it, his vision cut to black and woke up laying down in a sheet of clear water. Half of his body was submerged into the dense body of water, the other faced with a perfectly blue sky, clouds decorating the portrait like brushstrokes. This void was nothing but water and sky. The water so clear that it reflected nothing but the sky, and no bottom could be seen. He floated there, alone, in silence. Minutes passed by, but felt like hours. An eternity. Where was he? Who was he? He was skeptical if he were even the same person anymore. But as questions kept flowing into his mind, he reached out to the sky with an outstretched hand, reaching for it, dying to see if he could make it. But what was he reaching for? Who was he reaching for? This sky was so clear but he knew that it was nothing but clouds. But this water was so empty, but was filled with mystery and wonder. He couldn't bring himself to let himself fall into the water, however. He was too scared. Too scared that he'd drown before seeing the bottom. All his hard work of swimming and swimming, but only to find sand and dirt at the bottom.

Lax eyes and a relaxed expression, he laid there. Forever and ever.... until the sky began to crack like glass. His eyes widened with distraught, awe, shock, and fear. What was happening? What was this?! The pieces of the cracked sky fell apart, falling into a dark void and shattering into specks of light. It was all falling apart. Darkness was all that was left of that sky, no light remained. But something grabbed him. He jerked and squirmed about in response to the impact, looking around him to realize that this was no longer water, a sea of darkness! It was pulling him down. He screamed, and struggled, and sunk. He sunk, and sunk. He sunk into the darkness, deeper, and deeper. He couldn't breathe. What was going to happen? He had to make a choice...

Reach out a hand to the surface, knowing that nothing would reach back to grab him. Or give into the beckoning calls in the sea, and fall to the bottom which sand and dirt may only greet him. What would he do? What would he do?

    What can I do?

    I am all alone...

    No one can help me.

    I can't breathe.

    I am all alone!

    What can I do?

    I can't breathe.

    No one can help me.

    I am all alone.

    I AM ALL ALONE.

Just then, Ahote woke up. And he knew what he had to do. He knew what he had to do to escape this loneliness. He was at home, in his bed, and not a voice to be heard from downstairs. His parents were out. Tears began to clog in the corners of his eyes as he dashed out of his bed with a haste, grabbing a small backpack and filling it with his essentials. His stuffed bunny, Oscar, his crayons, a small journal filled with recipes, and a picture of his mother. He didn't know why he'd need the picture. But he couldn't bring himself to leave it. And with that, he ran downstairs with a messy room and dashed out the door, to the Eastern Forests, away from Magnolia. It took hours, he wasn't exactly a sturdy runner.

He ran, and ran, and ran. He didn't know where he was going, but he knew what he wanted to do. He wanted to escape. He felt that, if he left his home in search of adventure, he could escape that, and become a hero. He doubt that anyone would notice that he was gone, in his mind, at least. He ran, and ran, until he arrived to the deeper part of the forest. He was so blinded by distraught, he found himself in an area he had no recollection of. He was lost. And couldn't find his way home. He didn't want to go home... he didn't want to.

Three days had came and went, and Ahote was as skinny as a bone. He didn't have anything to eat! And for all he knew, he probably found himself deeper in the forest. The child was starved and hopeless, and deluded with the torment of hunger.

"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy, when skies are grey
You never know dear, how much I love you
    Please...
Please don't take my sunshine away...!"
Were the only words that slipped out of his mouth. He could not say anything more. In the darkness, surrounded by disgusting plants and ensconced in dirt, he repeated this jingle. Over, and over, and over, until he burst into tears. He wept and shrieked in the darkness, until someone would come save him.

Famine huffed, breath rushing from her lips in a cloud of white frost against the dark night as she withdrew the ebony weapon from the Vulcan’s brain, wiping a bloody blade point on the leg of her clothes before it finally dissipated into a black mist returning to the shadows it had condensed from. The mage looked out to the rest of the disassembled beast's left in the prickly grass of the clearing. These apes really tested her patience. Jumping her in the middle of a trip and on such a peaceful night too. She opened her mouth to sigh but something stopped her---

Famine craned her head up, like a cat perking its ears at a distant noise. Helpless, blubbering cries bounced off the rows of hollow trunks, echoed off into the dim atmosphere. Famine wondered If again she were hearing things if she was going even madder. Ever since solitary confinement in Era and since her contract with Eris, her unhinged mind has seemed to have the upper hand over her common sense, casting illusions, moving shadows in the corners of her eyes… Only this time the illusion sounded so voluminous... and real.

Unknowing where to look for the sound first, Famine cast her irises to the dark heavens. Even though the tangles of empty branches she could tell the night sky was glittering with diamond dust. She waited there a moment glowering through the trees at the moon which was a glowing sphere progressing like a silver coin rolling across the surface of a glass table.

She came to the conclusion that she wasn't hearing things. Though hesitant, Famine resumed her path towards the shivering cries through the moonlit forest, brushing past the low hanging starlit leaves. Her toes tickled against the stiff spines of grass, crunching a handful of leaves beneath her bare sole. It was when she ducked into the opening between the vegetation she saw the shadow lying at the base of a narrow tree...bawling.

Famine’s figure progressed towards the tree base in curiosity. Narrowed but glimmering blue eyes and fair skin still stained in places with blood would likely only terrify the boy more at a first glance. Silence only struck off Famine’s voice at the sight of the child’s weeping. He was just here alone, in the dark and seemingly left abbandoned. Like being struck by an arrow, unwelcome feelings of sympathy again devoured her insides, the woman was left looking back into her soul, seeing herself in the boy.

Ahote sat there in a mournful fit, unable to realize what a dire situation he was in. He didn't know what to think or say, and the words that rolled off his tongue as bitter as salt, muffled out by his sobbing. He was all alone, and ran away from home with intents of good and heroism. But what was this? Where was the enchanted forest like in the picture books? Or the good elves that would come to your every beck and call when in need? Was any of that real? Was it? Were they all lies? This is not what he was promised in the picture books! No, not to be surrounded by darkness and embraced by wet plants and doused in dirt, starving to death, lost in a thick forest. This was not real, was it? He groaned and shifted uncomfortably, his aching stomach in a pain as if it were eating itself alive. He wept alone, or so he thought.

Just then, when he had given up all hope, he heard a cracking noise. He went silent and jerked his head to the scene of the noise, much like how animals shift their attention to the slightest interruption. With widened brownish-red eye and tears streaming down his face, he trembled against the tree, hesitant to speak, but mustered up the courage and strength to speak words of fear and anxiousness. "H-Hello? Please don't eat me... please..." He spoke weakly, with pleading eyes and a voice of one who would beg. He reached into his dirty bag and pulled out Oscar, his stuff bunny, and clung to it tightly, holding it closely to his chest.

“Eat you?....” Famine gawked as brow furrowing down against her almost glowing eye “Don’t worry about that. --You probably taste horrible.” She chuckled in a whisper.

Her narrow azure hues fell down on the stuffed rabbit clenched ever so tightly in his grasp. Even if her dropped dead now Famine bet he’d still be clenching Oscar. This thought didn’t pass her because she imagined making this kid drop dead… she’d shed blood but she didn’t believe in killing a child yet… sure she was far gone but when the day came that she harmed a young one she truly would lose it.

Famine subconsiouly folded her arms over one another, brushing against the goose bumped skin

Sure the days in this section of Fiore could be dry and sunny but the nights were always chilly and windy in the woods. Though most of her senses had gone numb she could see the faded color from Ahote’s cheeks and the shivering of his form. Black matter gathered in her clenched palm and unfurled into an ebony sheet, whipping against the sudden breeze. Balancing on the balls of her feet she squatted down to her knee.Without warning she flipped the magic weaved blanket over his shoulders, pulling the cloth tight to hitch the boy closer, her nose practically bumping into the youths. “This is a scary place for a little boy you know? You should be at home. You’d be missed, little one.” The words purred from Famine’s throat. She was curious.Where was his home?

Ahote sat there against the harsh flesh of the tree, mud and grime were his only sheets of warmth and comfort. The cold, wet air nuzzled him to sleep as the silence and hungry ravens would lull him to sleep. Scrapes and bruises adorned his young, innocent skin. So beautifully tainted by the woods' cruelty, like a piece of bloody, bruised art. However, the worst of the lacerations were carefully hidden by his scratched clothing.

Ahote shivered as the apparent woman spoke her words, unable to muster up the strength nor courage to speak in such a desperate manner. Who was this person? And why was she here? Ahote had no right to ask such questions, for he had troubles as to identify of where he was in the first place. He held tightly onto Oscar, who was left in flawless, but dirty condition. His grip strong, but with shaking hands, covered in scratches. Ah, how these cuts would forever stay to remind him what sharp objects he had to overcome to come here.

She continued to speak, extending the ongoing one-sided exchange of words, until something... soft wrapped about him? It wasn't a long lasting satisfaction he obtained, and was hitched closer to the lady's face. Shocked, he widened his soft, weak eyes, tempted to let the heaviness sink down onto him. The bags under the eyes, dark and deprived. She asked him a question... what did she say? The words were muffled out, but he could make out one word. Home. What did she want to know? She would have to speak up. He couldn't hear, despite being as close as he was to her. Nothing but his heartbeat could be made out. She looked pretty. But his vision blurred, and that beauty ceased. He was so, so cold. His grip to Oscar became weak, and defenseless. What was this... sudden calmness? This numbness that overthrew his senses? Why was this blanket so lovingly warm? But so viciously unforgiving?

His senses grew dull, deaf to words and blind to beauty.

"Please speak up, miss... I can't hear you... I'm so tired... I'm so tired.... I'm so hungry... Oscar, come on... we gotta... we gotta go make a cake... I can't see anything... I... can't..."

And with that, his vision cut to black, his breathing became shallow, and his precious Oscar fell from his hand into the wet mud. His unconscious body fell into his stranger's arms unwillingly, his breath so quiet, it took nimble hearing to detect it. Was this it for Ahote?

    Where could he call home?

Famine, silent, only watched in an ignorance as he stumbled on syllables and paused between his nouns distressed until consciousness faded from his eyes and he stumbled limp into Famine’s front.

There was a beat of silence before narrow eyes, almost hateful in shape, fell onto the boy's head.

This really was none of her business, should she leave him  to whatever fate the forest had for him no one could hold her accountable...But there was something in the abandonment  she had seen on the child’s face that she just couldn’t sit with, like she was reminded of her own similar fate... Famine had abandoned all her morals, swung to the side of darkness, and even sold her soul…

And yet, here she was, tightening the blanket of darkness around him to keep him warm while plucking the stuffed rabbit, Oscar back into his tiny hands. Famine hauled the sleeping, exhausted, and cold Ahote into her arms, resting him against her shoulder. Famine couldn’t simply take him back into Magnolia or back into any other nearby town for help without risk of being seen or recognized… There was only one place she could whisk the lost boy away: The fortress on Mt. Hakobe.
