The reason they have weaknesses is because EVERYTHING has strengths and weaknesses. The weaknesses might be less obvious or less easy to exploit in powerful things, but they are still there. On top of that the weaknesses are there so that A ranks and below might be able to exploit said weaknesses in order to defeat the S rank despite being outclassed in terms of raw power.

What Zack said although I've always hated the ranking system all ft sites use. It should be more like
"mage, S-rank mage, Gildarts" with some other way of distinguishing power (such as stats) which can develop in its own (or the same) way.
But that's my own opinion and would make rank distinction far less of an issue.

We've tried introducing stats before and it hasn't worked. Nobody can agree on an effective system.
It is also for jobs. So only once you have proved yourself and become a certain rank can you do harder jobs. It also shows the development.
