The Stormcaller and the Skydancer [Private| Skylar and Velvet]

Once Skylar's gales of laughter finished, he noticed Velvet laying down on the ground and decided to join her. Wiping his face of a few tears that had leaked out as he was laughing, he lowered himself to the ground next to her, leaving a respectable amount of space between them as he looked up at the sky.

Her question caused him to hesitate a moment. He could describe the sky with colors... but did she even know what colors looked like? She said she'd been blind since she could remember. With a quiet sigh, he decided to simply ask her. "What do you know about colors? I can describe things fairly easily, but I don't know if you understand colors or not."

"You're welcome, Velvet." Skylar replied. It was good that Velvet understood the colors, as it would save him time, but he couldn't help feeling vaguely disappointed. He'd already come up with a few ways to describe colors that he didn't need now.

"So, you asked about what the sky looks like when we use our powers. On a normal day, such as today, the sky is blue. A blue so bright and pure, it almost hurts your eyes. A far brighter blue than the sea. Blue like your eyes. When I use my magic, the sky darkens. First to darker shades of blue, like the ocean, then to gray and finally black as stormclouds gather." He spoke slowly and calmly for the most part, but moved on hurriedly to describing the effect his magic had when he realized the comment about her eyes slipped out.

"Your magic... It almost seems to work the opposite way. They sky gets brighter, more blue, even when it's overcast. I almost think that if you used it enough, you could make a clear sky anywhere you went. Almost like mine, but... far more focused and precise. It's... really impressive, actually."

"Yes, it is." He said with a faint smile, looking over at her. "And so are you." Again, the words simply slipped out, and he tripped over his tongue to change the subject, hoping she somehow wouldn't notice his out-of-the-blue comment. "Is there anything else you'd like me to describe for you?" he asked.

As he waited, he couldn't help but think about the way he was acting? What was up with him? The random compliments that came out of nowhere, the way his heart started hammering against his ribs when she smiled at him, the way he just wanted to spend the rest of the day, or longer, laying on the grass with her... This was getting dangerous.

Skylar bit his tongue as Velvet sat up, waiting in petrified silence as she seemingly processed what he'd said. Slowly, he sat up as well, feeling the sudden shift in air pressure as her magic took over. His heart dropped to his stomach as she shook her head, and he wondered what exactly she was denying.

He breathed a quiet sigh of relief as she finally spoke again, even though she didn't acknowledge the compliment. "Uhhh... Yes, I am." he said. It wasn't quite a lie, it had been a while since he'd last eaten, but he would have said anything to alleviate this awkwardness he was feeling between them. "Do you know of a good place to eat around here?"

Skylar smiled slightly in response to her smiling at him. It was just an instinctive thing now, he supposed. He was more than glad that Velvet wanted to spend more time with him, despite his awkwardness.

"Alright, sounds good. Let's start walking?" he asked, then did something quite strange, for him. He offered her his arm, in a rather outdated but courtly gesture. He had no idea why he did it. Perhaps it was just another instinctive reaction, now that he knew about her blindness? All he could do was wait, hoping she either didn't notice or didn't take offense to it.

Skylar's heart seemed to do a jig in his chest when he felt Velvet's hand on his arm. What had seemed awkward and outdated now felt perfectly natural to him. No wonder the gesture had been so popular. He gave a quiet chuckle, beginning to walk through the streets of the Ace of Spades.

"Don't worry," he replied, smiling slightly, "I think I already know what I want." He was thinking of Joyan cuisine, which he'd enjoyed while in Tailwind Village. It had quickly become his favorite food, and he thought Velvet would like it as well, even if she'd never been to Joya.
