((Well here goes nothing))

It was early in the afternoon as Malm walked through the countryside. Up ahead he could see the giant beanstalk that the town he was heading towards got it's name from on the horizon. It wouldn't be long now before he would reach the town, so Malm decided to take a quick break while he could. There was no telling what could happen during this job, so Malm wanted to make sure he was at tip top condition when he finally arrived.

During his short break, he took out the sheet that the job was written off. Apparently the village has recently been having problem with there crops not growing. The job went on to explain that they believed that the crops were under some type of spell, but with no known wizard's living in the village, they had no idea who could of casted such a spell. Malm had reasons to doubt such a thing was actually the case though. It wasn't uncommon for crops to fail every now and then. But Malm had decided to pick up the job anyways as he was a plant wizard, and believed he could assist with the crops growth.

However, as Malm looked towards the village, he had the strange feeling that the villagers may be right after all. Call it a gut feeling, but there was something dark looming over the village. It was almost enough to frighten the plant mage a bit. Could there actually be some kind of spell on the village?

Well there was only one to find out.

It wasn't long before Malm had reached the edge of the village. He took a quick glance at the strange cone shape buildings and the wooden poles the village was known for as he got closer. Those and the giant beanstalk gave the village a unique sense of self. This was definitely a new experience for the plant wizard as he couldn't claim to have seen a village so different from the many of the others he's been too.

A bearded man in his thirties took notice of Malm's presence. "Hey kid. It's not often we get tourist in this parts. What's your business here?" He asked as he eyed Malm suspiciously.

Malm turned to look at the man as he heard this. It was obvious to him at first glance that this man had spent his life tending to the fields. "Uhh... Hello there sir. I'm Malm. I came here for this job." He told the man as Malm showed him the job request.

"Ohh... You must be the wizard who came to deal with the spell on our crops. So which of the guilds do you come from?" The man asked.

"I'm actually not a part any of the wizard guilds at the moment." Malm admitted as he nervously rubbed his arm.

"Not a part of any of the wizard guilds you say." The man seemed a bit disappointed by that fact, "Oh well... We could use the help of just about any wizard right now. Come. I'll take you to the fields and inform the others that you arrive. He said as he began leading Malm to the farmlands.

"So if you don't mind me asking, why do you think there's a spell on your crops? I mean there are many reasons why crops fail. So what makes you think it's magic?" Malm asked as he followed the man, taking notice to the villagers watching the pair.

"Our crops aren't just failing boy. They are withering and growing strange thorns all over on them. We've been working on these fields for generations, and none of us have ever seen or heard anything like it before. Tell me kid, what other explanation would you have for such a thing?" The man asked.

"I don't really know. The job request only mentioned the fact that the crops were failing and that you believed it to be a spell. Nothing on it mentioned anything about strange thorns." Malm mentioned as he thought about what else could of been the cause for the plants to wither and grow strange thorns. It could be a type of unusual weed or parasite that's affecting the crops, but it seemed unlikely. It made sense now why they would suspect magic to be involved.

"Is that so? Well that would explain why it took so long for a wizard to take it. What type of magic do you specialize in anyways?"

"Ohh uhh Plant magic sir." Malm quickly replied.

"Well I guess we should count ourselves lucky on that fact. You should be able to clear this whole mess up quickly then. Right?"

"Well I definitely will try my best." Malm told him. If the problem with their crops were in fact caused by magic, then Malm wasn't sure if he would be able to solve the problem.

A short silence followed their conversation before they had reached the farmlands. "Here we are. Now be careful not to wreck the crops. These are our livelihood afterall."

Malm nodded as he approached the field. Sure enough, the man was telling the truth about the strange thorns on these crops. His Plant Sense told him that every crop he could sense was sufferong from the same condition. He could also tell that magic was the cause of this. Yet who could of done this? And why did Malm have the strange feeling thay he's being watched.

Malm turned around as he noticed five cobs of corn suddenly disappear from his sense. The boy had no idea how something like that could of happened until he saw five corn like monsters. What in the world? Could it be that the spell on these plants are converting them into mosters somehow? As he looked at them.

"By the gods above." Malm heard the man beside him say as he assumed the man saw the corn creatures too.

"Hey. Get a look at these ugly losers." One of the corn monsters said.

"Yeah. I don't know which one is more pathetic. That stupid farmer, or the green haired brat over there?" Another one said.

""My vote goes to the farmers. Wasting all his life on this god forsaken farm instead of his look. How pitiful." All the corn cobs nodded in agreement.

This seemed to get under the farmers skin. "I'd let you know that my family has been proud farmers for generations, and I'm not gonna just stand here and be insulted by corn." He said as he began to angrily walk over to them.

"Ohh... It's seems like he wants to fight. Watch me take him in a single hit. Corn Corn Cannon." Said one of the corn monsters as he stepped forward and fired a kernel at the man.

The man froze in fear as he was the projectile heading straight at him. "Flash Foliage" Malm's voice rang out as a shrubbery grew right in front of the man and took the attack. The attack destroyed the shrubbery, but the man was left unarmed.

"Quickly. I take care of these guys while you go and warn everybody in the village, especially anybody who's tending the fields, to stay as far away from the farms as possible. There could very well be more of these creatures poping up all over the farm." Malm quickly told the man, who quickly complied.

"Look at this fellas. The brat thinks he is better then us. Maybe we should teach him a lesson."

"Yeah. Let's show this shorty who's the best."

Malm drew his sword and took a stance as he knew that a fight was near. He had to admit, he didn't like his odds though. Not only do these creatures outnumber him, but their attack had also managed to completely destroy his shrubbery in one blow. This was definitely not going to be easy, that was for sure.

    "Corn corn Cannon"

Malm immediately found himself forced to run as the Corn Demons began firing off volleys of corn at him. While he was far from being one of the fastest mages in the world, he still was able to get out of the way from the barrage. If just barely. He ran around the demons as they followed his movement with their attack. His plant sense proved useful as he was able to easily dance around the crops that were now below him. Yet how exactly was he suppose to get close to them with all this fire power.

He saw his opportunity as the corn stopped flying. It seemed that these corn monsters were out of ammo. Now it's time for a counter attack. Malm rushed straight towards the group with holding his free hand up. "Sapping Thorns" He called out as he summoned several thorns and sent them off towards the Corn monsters, with each one managing to hit it's mark.

"What was that now. Trying to mess up our suave style. That isn't cool." Said the one who Malm assumed had became the leader of the small group.

"No offense, but I could care less about your looks. Not as long as you threaten the lives of these villagers." Malm told the corn cob as he rushed towards the monster. He quickly followed this with a quick combo of two slashes of his blade finished with a thrust through the creature, who soon collapsed.

One down. Four more to go.

Malm found himself quickly surrounded by the Corn beasts. They didn't exactly seem happy to see one of there own being taken down by the teen.

"Your gonna pay for that bub. Do you know how much time it takes to look this good?" One said as the others grunted in agreement. They all then began to attack by attempting to slam their body's into Malm.

The green-haired teen danced around in an attempt to avoid the attacks as he responded with several quick slashes of his sword here and there. It didn't turn out all so well as he they managed to get a couple of good hits on him. He did manage to land several good hits himself though. Two of the Corn demon's fell during the flurry of attacks while the other two were severly injured, but Malm flinched as he felt like they managed to brake a couple of his ribs.

The remaining Corn monsters quickly took advantage of this as they attempted to flank him. Noticing that they were about to attack, Malm quickly got out of the way as they slamed into each other. Effectively finishing each other off.

"Well that's taken care of." Malm said with an exhausted sigh of relief, "Now I just need to figure out how to..." Malm stopped as he took notice of something else.

"Hey boy. What makes you think you have the right to wear green? Are you trying to rob our style?" One of the corn demon's said.

Malm looked over as he noticed the corn demon's presense. "More of these guys. You have to be kidding me." He said under his breath as he took another battle stance.

"Yeah. What gives you the right?" Asked another one of the demons.

"Let's show this kid what happens to wannabees" A third one said. They all agreed and began charging towards Malm.

Malm watch as they came at him, electing to bide his time instead of charging them as well. Then as soon as one of them was close enough, he quickly slashed his sword at it diagonally from top right to lower left, managing to get a good cut in. He quickly followed this up with another diagonal slash from the opposite end, then finished him off a horizontal slash.

Just like the first wave, the corn demon's didn't seem all to happy to see one of their allies fall. Before Malm could do anything, one of them slammed their body into Malm at full force, knocking the teen off his feet. Another followed this up by attempting to body slam him, but Malm was able to roll away just in time.

Malm quickly got back on his feet and held his sword in a defensive pose. His whole body ached as he didn't like how this was going. If he didn't end this quick, they'll definitely be able to just overrun him. A Plant Mage taken out by plants. That would definitely be embarrassing way to go.

He quickly switched to offensive as he took five quick jabs at the one picking itself off the ground. It just collapsed onto the ground as it was finished off. Malm didn't waste any time as he followed this up by attempting to slash at the one that had knocked him down, but it managed to avoid his attack. He then tried to thrust his blade at it, but that missed as well.

"Corn Corn Cannon" It called out as it fired a corn like missile.

"Flash Foliage" Malm quickly responded as he summoned a shrubbery to take the hit. Like before, it manage to eat the attack, but it faded away quickly afterwards.

"Corn Corn Cannon" Another one said as it seemed he managed to sneak behind Malm while he was focused on the first one. Malm, unable to move in time, was hit squarely in the back and pushed into the first demon.

Luck was on Malm's side as his blade manage to find it's way into the corn demon. Malm fought though the pain, and followed this up with a quick upward vertical slash. He then finished the demon that had been giving him so much trouble with a horizonal slash, cutting it in half.

Three down, two to go. Malm quickly observed his surroundings to see where the two were at. The one that had just shot him was still several feet behind him, while the other seemed to be keeping his distance away from Malm. It was obvious that they had no intention on getting close to him. Was it possibly that they were afraid of him?

For now Malm decided to focus on the one that shot him for now. He quickly ran after the corn demon as fast as he could. The demon tried his best to shoot at Malm, but couldn't get a good shot off. Once Malm had closed the distance, it tried to get away. It failed however as Malm quickly cut him down with a string of three slashes.

The remaining Corn Demon looked at him deciding whether it should run away or fight. It wasn't dumb, it knew that if it faced Malm in combat, it would be quickly disbatched with. But Malm's crimes against fashion were to big to just ignore.

"Corn Corn Cannon" It called out as it began firing off volleys of corn. Malm quickly avoided the attack and charged straight at it. The green haired teen knew he couldn't risk just letting this one get away, less it would decide to attack the Villagers instead.

Malm struck the corn beast with two strikes at it's legs before thrusting his sword though it. The corn creature fell like the others. Malm withdrew his sword from the remains of the corn beast as he looked around.

"I really hope that is it?" Malm said in a pained voice as he was quickly reminded of his injuries.

Malm grew worried as the corn from the nearby corn field began disappearing from his plant sense. He turned to face the corn field to see even more corn monsters appearing from. There was definitely a lot more then last time though. While the last two groups had groups of five in it, this time he was counting ten. They also appeared to be a lot more aggressive then the last two groups as they all charged straight towards him.

Malm also noticed something else about this new group. They didn't seem to be as talkative as the last two groups. Is it that they already know what Malm did to the last two groups and wanted vengence? Maybe, but Malm believed there could be another explanation for it.

He had noticed that whatever enchantment that was laid on the plants seemed to be weakening after each group of corn monsters he had defeated. So there was a good chance that they were more a part of the spell that laid on the plants then Malm originally believed. It could also explain why these corn demons were just going in for the attack. The spell was using what it could to prevent Malm from defeating it.

With that in mind, Malm now had another reason to take these monsters down. If they were attached to the enchantment in the way he expected them to be, then maybe once he took enough of these creatures down, then the spell will break. This sadly meant this fight was going to end up being a endurance contest between him and the spell. And with how beat up he already was, he didn't like his chances.

There wasn't any opportunity to really think anymore about this as the group of corn monsters were on him. He took notice that they were all close together, and it would be a good idea to use seed barrage on them. Yet it was risky seeing how he could easily damage the fields with such a spell. Maybe if he could lure them to the road though...

Malm quickly began backing away from the Corn demons in order to lead them onto the road that stretched between the two farm fields. It was difficult to keep away from the charging corn monsters, but he somehow managed it. Once the group was on the road, he focused himself to make sure that this attack won't miss, nor would it effect any of the crops. "Seed Barrage" He called out as he threw three seeds into the air. The seeds fell precisely where he wanted them and exploded right in the middle of the corn demons.

A small cheer escaped Malm's lips as he saw this. As the smoke cleared however, it seemed the explosion didn't do much to any of the demons. Malm knew he shouldn't be surprise by this. The explosion the seeds caused were never that strong. They were more like small fireworks then anything else. This also seemed to have only enraged the Corn beasts, which could prove bad for Malm.

Malm held his sword in front of him as he ran out of options of what else he could really do. At least the explosion seemed to have soften them up some. He still needed to be careful though and choose his battles. One wrong move could easily finish him off.

He charged towards one of the demons that was on the edge of the group. The Corn Demon saw this coming and tried to avoid his attack, but Malm saw this coming and managed to land the hit anyways. He then followed this up with another quick slash that finished the demon off. Malm then quickly moved out of there as several of Corn demons try to attack him back.

"Corn Corn Cannon" Malm heard the Corn Demons call in unison as they began firing at Malm. He kept moving as the Corn Demon's attempted to strike him. Yet that didn't seem to be enough this time as a stray shot managed to catch him to the side.

Malm was knocked onto his feet and rolled near one of the farm fields. He groaned a little as he pushed himself back up. Those corn missiles really hurt. He noticed that the field in front of him was actually growing cabbage, and while they were wilted, they could still be of some use to him. He carefully plucked a single leaf from the cabbage and held it over his side. "Remedy" He said as the leaf faded away and a soft glow began to relieve the pain he felt there.

He pushed himself off the ground, and held his sword up again. Things seem to just be getting grimmer and grimmer by the second. Despite healing the wound on his side, his whole body was still screaming in agony. It also seemed the hoard of Corn Demon's weren't just gonna wait patiently for him to recover as they were already charging straight towards him again. Malm honestly didn't knew what else he could really do.

"Sapping Thorns." Malm called out as he fired five thorns into the group. Fortunately each thorn managed to hit it's own seperate target, but Malm was afraid that wasn't going to do anything to stop them though. So Malm did the only reasonable thing he could think of. Run.

The teen ran as fast as his tired legs could. Yet one glance behind him showed that the Corn Demon's were quickly catching up to him. Malm quickly turned around, his blade cutting two of the corn demons as he did so. This didn't seem to deter any of the corn demon's either as they began trying to tackle into him. Malm jumped back as fast as he could, but felt one of them hit his right leg with full force. Malm grunted as he felt waves of pain from his leg.

It seemed running won't be much of an option anymore.

An idea then formed in Malm's head. A very stupid idea that Malm knew full well could cost him his life. Yet what else could he really do at this point? He was outnumbered and was beginning to feel himself lose focus.

Malm pushed drove his blade forward as he pushed himself into the middle of the crowd. Most of the Corn Demon's that were in front of him jumped to the side in order to avoid the attack, but one in the back of the pack was impaled by the sword. Malm quickly withdrew his sword as the pack quickly began to swarm around him. He only had one chance at this.

"Seed Barrage" Malm called out as he sent the seeds right below him. The seeds bounced a bit when they had hit the ground and managed to make it a foot or two before being stopped by the bodies of the corn demons (though they didn't notice as they were to focused on trying to attack Malm). Malm did his best to block or avoid any attacks that came his way during the few seconds before the seeds exploded, but unfortunately one or two attacks managed to land. Then there was an explosion.

Having been knocked to the ground by the explosions, Malm groaned as he pick himself up. His breathing was heavy and his vision was beginning to blur as his whole body ached in pain. A good part of him was beginning to wonder why he went through with such a stupid plan in the first place. As he picked himself up, he saw that the attack had proven it's effectiveness.

Three of the corn monsters had fallen to the attack, and the 6 that remained didn't look to be in a good condition. Even better, 5 of of the Corn Demon's, who he had suspected to have been infected by his thorns, soon fell as they succumb to their wounds. That now meant that their were only one left. Malm quickly pressed his advantage as he quickly charged at the remaining Demon, and with a quick horizontal slash, he cut the last creature in half.

"That's the last of them." Malm said with a sigh of relief. "So that means the spell on these plants should be gone now, right?""

Unfortunately that didn't seem to be so for while the spell has greatly weakened, it didn't seem to have given up yet. Knowing that there was going to be another onslaught of opponents coming at him soon, Malm quickly plucked went over to the crops and plucked a leaf from a nearby plant. "Remedy" He called out as he held his hand over his chest. He didn't knew how effectively he would be able to fight in his condition, and knew he needed to keep on his toes. Hopefully he won't have to face against another wave of those corn things as he didn't knew how many more of those he could truly handle.

Malm turned as he noticed another section of the nearby corn field disappear. He wasn't so surprise though as he suspected that the spell probably had some kind of affiliation with corn. It was the only explanation he could come up with for why the spell is able to create these corn monsters in the first place when so many other crops were infected. Maybe that means the corn fields are tied to the spell in the way that if he destroyed all of them, that the spell will be broken. That'll will have to be worse case scenario though as he didn't want to disrupt the lives of these farmers anymore then they already have.

The good news at least was the spell was definitely getting weaker. This group of Corn Demons was half the size of the previous group and seemed to be just as single minded. Hopefully this means this will be the last one as Malm honestly didn't knew how much more of this he can take. He was on his final legs and knew full well that if he allowed them to get another good strike on him, then he'll be finish.

Malm's legs shook as he took a stance. The group of Corn Demons were charging at him like the last few, and he needed a plan. There was no way he could really run with his leg in the shape it is. It hurt just to stand and it was worse whenever he tried to move on it at all. So all he could really do now was stand his ground and hope for the best.

    Here they come...

Malm quickly slashed at the first one he could once they were withing range and he quickly backed off a bit to avoid it's counter attack. Malm flinched slightly as he did so however as a wave of pain shot through his leg. The teen pushed through it however as he step forward with a counter stab that he quickly followed up with a horizontal slash that finished the corn monster off.

It didn't take long for the other plant monsters to reach and surround Malm. The green haired teen quickly slashed at the one in front of him as he attempted to use his other arm to block an incoming tackle. It wasn't exactly one of Malm's brightest ideas as a shock of pain went through that arm as he could of swore he felt something give. He quickly responded to this with a quick jab that was avoided.

Malm then caught the corn demon behind him trying to sneak in an attack. Malm quickly responded by swinging his sword in a wide arch at it. This ultimately didn't do much as it failed to strike the demon and only dissuaded him from following through with it's attack. Malm then quickly slashed at the others as he knew they would attempt to strike him believing that his attention was else where. Malm knew full well that he wouldn't be able to keep this up for long as they will eventually manage to get another hit on him. He really needed to think of someway to get out of this situation and quick.

Malm quickly moved out of a way from one of the Corn Demon's tackle as he countered that attack with a diagonal slash of his blade. The Demon could only growl in as Malm finished it off with a quick succession of jabs. With another one of these Corn Demon's down meant that their were only three of them left. The teen then quickly slashed in another wide arch as to keep the other three away, knowing full well that they were trying to blindside him.

Malm guessed he should count his blessing that these are the only demon's the spell seemed to be able to create. They have gotten to be pretty predictable now, which Malm was pretty sure the main reason why he was still able to stand up to these things despite the beating their predecessors have given him. He knew full well that the ones to his side were going to attempt to go behind him in order to surround him again, yet Malm wasn't going to have any of that. He quickly stabbed to his left then his right. While neither attack hit it's target, it did dissuade the Corn Demons from moving from his sight.

"Corn Corn..." Malm didn't allow the Demon in front of him to finish his attack as he reach forward with a stab. He then pulled his blade out and swung his blade in a diagonal direction. This was quickly followed up by a vertical slash that finished that Demon off.

    Only two more to go.

Malm looked back and forth at his two remaining foes. From what he could tell from his plant sense, the spell on the crops was on it's last thread. Perhaps if he managed to defeat these last two corn demons, then the spell will finally break. Only time would truly tell though.

The one on his right stepped forward in order to attack. Malm responded to this by kicking the Corn Demon with his good leg then following that up by a quick slash. The Demon staggered from the blow and was caught off guard as Malm went in for the stab. The Corn beast as it tried in vain to get one last hit on Malm before the boy, with his sword still in the demon, swung his sword up, effectively cutting the corn beast in half from the waist up.

"Corn Corn Cannon" Malm didn't get much of a chance to react to this as a corn cob his him on the side. The force of the blow knocked Malm off his feet, and onto his side. His vision was beginning to get blurry as his whole body was beginning to ask him to just give in. Yet Malm was to close to lifting this curse to give up just yet, so he forced himself back onto his feet and face his final opponent.

    Post by timmir1 20th August 2014, 1:16 pm

Time seemed to have stopped when Malm looked at the last Corn Demon. This was it. If his guess about this was correct, then once he managed to destroy this last one, the spell on the crops will be lifted. It seemed luck was on his side as well as this one was the one that Malm had managed to injure earlier too. So it shouldn't take much for him to take this Corn beast out.

"Corn Corn Cannon" The Corn Demon finally called out as he fired a corn missile. Malm, anticipating this, ducked it just in time as he placed a hand on his injured leg. "Remedy" The teen said as he used some of the weeds he managed to pluck to heal his leg. With it beginning to feel better, he made a b-line straight towards the corn demon.

The Corn demon tried to fire off another missile at Malm, but the shot went completely off target. A split second later Malm struck the demon with the edge of his sword. As Malm went in for the kill, the Corn Demon knew it only had one chance. "Corn corn Cannon" "Entangling Roots" The two called out at the same time. Malm knew he couldn't get out of the way in time and was forced to take the attack head on. Yet the roots he summoned grabbed onto his feet to prevent him from moving anywhere.

"Hyuh!" Malm grunted as his blade impaled through the Corn Demon. The Demon went wide eyed as it was struck, and once Malm pulled the blade out, it feel down onto it's back. Malm breathing was heavy as the roots underneath him had released his feet. His vision then soon began blacking out as he collapsed to his knees.

The last thing he remembered was the feeling of the cold hard ground on his face and the spell on the crops finally fading away.

As Malm regained consciousness, the first thing he noticed was that he was on something soft. It was nice seeing how his whole body felt absolutely horrible, though admittedly not as bad as it did earlier. The teen groaned in pain as his eyes slowly open to see a wooden roof above him. Why was he here?

"Oh... Good. Your finally awake. We were starting to get worried that you wouldn't wake up." Malm turned to see the man that had led him to the farm lands earlier that day.

"So how long was I out?" Malm asked

"For a good few hours." The man answered. Malm nodded before forcing himself to sit up with a groan. "Whoa there kid. No need to over extend yourself there."

    "I'm... I'm alright."

"Okay then" The man said as he crossed his arms, "I must say though that we definitely owe you one son. I don't know what you did, but you somehow managed to save our crops and our livelihoods. Though the townsfolk are curious about all the chopped up corn that was laying around you."

"Yeah... I guess that's to be expected." Malm said with a sigh as he rubbed the back of his head.

"I wouldn't stress yourself out to much about it. I'm guessing that more of those strange corn fellows appeared and you had to do what you had to do. Well you better rest up now. The whole village wants to throw you a celebration for what you did for us." The man said as he left the room.

"Wait you honestly don't..." Malm tried to tell the man, but was to late. The green haired teen just sighed as he laid back onto the bed.

Oh well... The party was probably one of those things he wouldn't be able to talk himself out of.

The party went off without a hitch. Everyone seemed to have a great time, and Malm had to admit that he enjoyed himself too. However, as he left the village, something bothered the teen. He never did find out who was responsible for placing the curse on those plants. He looked back at the village with some hesitation as he wondered if he should leave things how they are. Yet if the wizard was among the townsfolk, then why wouldn't he try to take out Malm when he had the chance.

With that in mind, Malm continued on his way, but kept in mind to keep an ear out for anything happening to the village again. If the wizard who placed the curse did try to do the same thing again, Malm would make sure to return to the Beanstalk as soon as he could to settle things once and for all.

    [end]
