He then a horrible screech come from the creature as it was consumed in the flaming explosions, but also from behind him. He turned around to see one had snuck up right behind him, it had been seconds from ending his life but was now writhing in pain. Simon noticed that it's shadow form seemed to be being burned, he looked back to the phantom he hit and saw that it was still on fire and obviously in pain. Simon could only draw one reasonable conclusion from this, what hurt one demon, hurt them all. To test this he kicked at the one who had attempted to sneak attack him. The beast was still incapable of reacting because of Simon's last attack and was sent sprawling helpless off the tree trunk. At the same time the other one recoiled backwards as if struck. The phoenix mage grinned, he had found their Achilles heel.

Now he knew that if he defeated one he would be able to defeat them all. Speaking of them all Simon questioned where the other one was... As he said it a bunch of the trees suddenly changed course and launched at Simon. It was too much to react to at once and he was hit head on. He heard cracking sounds as the trees impacted with his small body and pain swallowed his mind. Simon knew getting hit was dangerous but he never imagined it would cause this level of damage. Looking to finish the kill the 3 fear incarnate not holding the trees in the air flew in at Simon ready to shred him to pieces with their shadow tendrils. Unfortunately for them they would succeed. As if made of microscopic chainsaws the tendrils ripped Simon apart in a way too gross to describe as the demons sat back laughing as one.

Despite being in the process of dieing, Simon smiled. Because while the demons laughed as one they would die as one. For on his death Simon involuntary reflex spell "Rebirth Flame" activated. Simon's desecrated remains exploded into a massive ball of all consuming blue flame. All three of the demons were caught in the blast which would have nightmarish consequences for them. They shared each other's pain and injuries, so when they all got caught in the attack it was if they got hit 3 times over. As Simon formed from his falling ashes he saw the ragged figures all reform then vanish into the dark of the woods far below. His mission was almost complete.

Long story short:

Simon would just barely land alive, getting in control of his wings of fire fast enough to reduce the force of the impact to something that his God Leg magic could absorb without injuring him.

It was a minor miracle all the falling trees didn't crush him, but miraculously he was able to stay clear of all of them.

He walked back to the newly made clearing in the hope of finding what he could left of the Rune Knights. He found most of the corpses dropped to the ground, the tree they were hanging from long since uprooted. After several gut wrenching and sickening minutes Simon was able to get them all into body bags that they had been caring. It shocked Simon that they carried body bags for themselves but he figured that was just part of the job.

As he prepared to start hauling them out he found some paper that appeared to be ripped out of a journal...
