"T hat looks complicated.” The fairy, who Morgana chose to name Ilayda after thorough consideration and leafing through many pages containing names and their meaning, did not offer much help with her obvious statement. She hovered over her mistress’ shoulder, tiny face scrunched up in what she guessed to be a frown. “It is torturous to my eyes. Does it have any pictures?”

Disregarding her mistress entirely, Ilayda swooped down to the tome sitting open on the table and flipped to the next page: precisely what the fairy wanted – a series of pictures demonstrating an even more complicated spell. “Oooh. This one!”

Morgana knew she should have named her Acantha.

“Stop that,”  Mor chided before flipping back to the previous page. “I’m trying to read.”

Ilayda sighed dramatically, plopping down on her shoulder. “At least someone knows how to read. I was worried you were going to have me read these spells out loud to you.”

    Wait.

“You can’t read? You’re a water fairy. How can you perform spells?”

“I knew the spells well before you summoned me to birth.” Ilayda waved her hand. “Or, you may have imparted those spells to my being upon my birth. What you knew then, I also know, and what you learn I also learn. It is precisely for that reason I asked for pictures!”

Mor’s eyes narrowed. She turned her head and gave the fairy a look.

“Hmph. I know, I know,” was her response before disappearing in a cloud of blue dust.

    “How, exactly?” Mor muttered.

“The same way every single magical being knows, my love,” came a voice from behind Morgana, echoing through their loving little cabin - small, unassuming and not at all lavish, which meant that it was exactly unlike anything either of them were typically used to in their living, but it was more than sufficient for their minimalist needs– and their minimalist budget, at that. It was a drastic departure from their previous lives as nobles but, having fled their wealth and fortune for a life together as opposed to the preordained wishes of their families, this was the much better solution to that particular issue.

Instead, he moved behind her as she sat upon her chair, staring at the tome of water that held ancient and dangerous secrets that he was clearly not privy to in the least. “They live inside your head, of course, and are bound to your ethernano. Why else would they be able to know all that you know and vice-versa? Actually, let’s clarify that. She’s a little more like a parasite to your aether than she is a true companion. And yes, Ilayda, I know full well you can hear me,” Uriel responded in kind, rightfully expecting some form of retribution on the part of the little conjured water fairy. It was, really, an inevitability that something would come of it given the little critter’s particular proclivity for impulse and emotion as behooved her upbringing as a sprite.

However, his eyes continued to cast down to the tome, wondering rather clearly as to the purpose for all of this. “Mor, I do need to ask– why in particular are you attempting to study this book? I was of the impression that your magic was both innate and celestial in nature at this point?”
