Tenma is cruel and ruthless, and shows no mercy to enemies and allies alike. He can be short-tempered and easily angered even by small mistakes. He has a lot of confidence in his strength and power, and thus, often looks down on his enemies, referring to them as trash. Under his tough exterior, Tenma is a person who cares deeply for his subordinates and is willing to go as far as to die for them. He is shown to have a strong feeling of respect to those who have become strong and powerful through their own hard work and have scraped their way to the top. Due to being tormented and belittled at a young age, Tenma has grown to be vicious and crude towards basically everyone as a way in order to protect himself from being tormented again. Deep down, Tenma has a good heart and is a sympathetic person who wishes to rise his social status in order to prove the people who belittled and tormented him wrong. However, Tenma is willing to do anything in order to achieve this, whether it means going against the law or fighting alongside it.

He continued this path of life until he came across magic, a new and leading edge way to rise up the social chain. As a result, Tenma swore to become a highly respected mage which no one would ever look down upon and would prove all of the people who labeled him and his mother as 'nobodies' wrong. Due to his experimentation's with his magic, Tenma earned scars all over his body which would act as a reminder of his hard work.
