    Spoiler:

I've been out there and seen the things she's made

The stalker was tied up with a firm rope that the herbalist had lying around her house and held onto until the local Rune Knights arrived. The two soldiers seemed fairly uninterested in taking part in the investigation but after Mythal explained a little bit about what was happening, they nodded and agreed to take the man into custody and bring him to the local branch. The God Slayer would have liked to interrogate the man a bit more but the strength of his chop had apparently knocked the stalker practically into a coma.

The herbalist was, understandably, freaked out by the entire scenario. “Why was he following you? Why was he listening in on me?!” she asked desperately, pulling the curtains on her window to mask the interior of her home from outside eyes.

“Couldn’t tell ya. But somethin’ tells me it’s about this flower you’re investigatin’,” the Darkness King explained as he picked up the parchment she had been attempting to show and explain to him. He cocked a brow as he looked over at her, the woman clearly bothered by everything. “You could drop the whole thing right here before it gets too far.” She didn’t seem to be cut out for this kind of danger, given her near quivering body. Mythal could continue the investigation, though his knowledge of plants was practically nil. Better than her being in trouble.

But his option for her to drop everything right then and there only seemed to fortify her desire to continue. She took a deep breath, inhaling sharply and puffed out her chest, trying to look as intimidating as possible. “Never! It’s my duty to protect this village and I will do so with my very life.” With that said, she stomped over to Mythal and took the book from his hand. “As I was saying before we were interrupted, the strange thing about this plant is it seems to be evolving at an extraordinarily swift rate. Even in captivity of my special canisters, its genetic structure changed in an attempt to break down and absorb the vial. I don’t believe this infection is the plant itself but rather something inside it. A disease of some kind that I can’t really identify without further study.”

“Contagious?” Mythal asked, glancing at plant samples over on her table.

“Well no but—” Cries of anguish and terror suddenly tore through the air from outside and both of them shared a quick glance before rushing to the door. The herbalist tore the door open and was greeted by the sight of seven wolves tearing through the small village. But they didn’t look normal – a dark violet algae substance clung to their fur near their ears and small, glowing mushrooms were protruding from their hindquarters and shoulder blades.

“Contagious now it seems,” Mythal said as he rushed past her, his magic already rushing to the surface. A dark, shadowy halo materialized above his head and smoky wings spread from his back, lifting him from the ground. He moved quickly to the first wolf, twisting his body to land a flying dropkick into its chest and caving in its ribs. He swept around as three of the wolves turned and charged him, their fangs glimmering in the sunlight. The God Slayer jerked his body to a stop and swung his leg forward in a sidekick that slammed into the right most wolf and sent it into its other two brethren. Two more came at him from the side, Mythal snapping his arms out to grab them by the throats and then slamming them into the ground, silencing them immediately.

A loud bellow shrieked from the woods as a bear, similarly disturbed and infected, came rushing out of the darkness in a full charge. He trampled over the last wolf, ending its pitiful life in an instant, as it made its way towards Mythal. The Darkness King squared up easily before he shot forward so fast, the bear wasn’t even prepared. A hard-cross punch to its face jerked its head to the side so violently there wasn’t even a sound as its neck snapped. The monstrosity slammed into the ground as Mythal dipped to the side, just barely avoiding its crumbling body.

His spells faded from him as he turned to face the herbalist, his brows knit together in concern. “I think you need to run some more tests.”
