Post by Sol 1st June 2017, 11:09 am

High in the sky above the neutral ground was a large black shadow and it was approaching the ground very quickly, if you looked at it closer it was actually a large black dragon and in it claws was a blond woman with sapphire blue eyes, as they got closer to the neutral grounds Sol slowed his descent to the ground and he landed softly before he released his guild master and lover onto the ground gently before he shifted back into his human form.as soon as he had touched the ground the poison shadow dragon had noticed that his strength had been cut quite a bit and he growled slightly as he tested if he could still shift now that he was bound to the ground, after a moment or two of testing he found that he could still shift but not fully and it worried him slightly.

Shall we find the client Famine?” he asked simply as he flexed his claws and would follow the women after she spoke, they had to meet the client and find out what was going on, from what the misson paper said they were going to be looking and getting information from a lab here that had a bad accident. The paper also mentioned some very dangerous creatures which also had the slayer rather worried, if he had his magic he wouldn’t feel as upset but no magic meant he was vulnerable and so was Famine. While he knew he was tough due to being a dragon without his magic and famine without hers they were very weak famine being slightly weaker then him due to being human though he would never admit that to her. “I really don’t like this place I don’t feel right I feel too restricted ” he grumbled

He had so much magical power and in this place where magic was unable to be used it felt his he was being weighed down by his own magic due to it being bottled up. He wanted to get away from this place as soon as possible but untill the job was done he had no choice but to keep going but something in his stomach told him this mission was going to be dangerous more dangerous then any he had done before,Sol glanced down as his markins on his chest that allowed him control over his chain Enkidu but in this space would he be able to even use it and worse what if he couldn’t even summon it at all, he would be powerless and weaponless with only his claws to protect him and Famine and if that was not enough he would have do to the one thing he hated to do… run.

Terror in the Labs (Job/Famine) Empty Re: Terror in the Labs (Job/Famine)

From her the perch on the shadow dragon Famine’s blue hues could see every last detail of the neutral grounds, the barren, cracked earth beneath them, the occasional shriveled tree and field mouse scuttering into the weeds for cover---Even in the dark the ominous moonlight shone on the horizon to set every last detail a glow.  Each beat of the dragon’s wings above her flew her further and further into the territory.  Famine felt herself grow increasingly more fatigued. It must of been this land, Neutral grounds. Famine had heard many things of these plains, the most prominent of the rumors being how hey seemed to swallow away the magic of the mages that entered the premises.

Sol dove into one of the hills in the plains not far from the city in the distance, effectively allowing him a soft landing and to transform back without bringing about panic from the locals that were out this time of night. Her eyes skimmed over the glowing building and city lights. It was evident that this was a prospering society. Though Famine still found it unbelievable that they could live and prosper without magic here. Famine was certain at least half of them would drop dead seeing a dragon…. The thought entertained her, but at the risk of their mission she would have to pass it up.

Famine hopped to the ground promptly, turning to look up her Ace when he spoke too her.“Yes, that’d be wise…” She stated, blinking back to the settlement behind them. She started down the hill, of cracking twigs, bramble, and dry grass. Sol and her were on the same page, she didn’t like this either… Famine looked down at her palms as she walked, trying to conjure up something, anything, there was a small pathetic crack of black light in her hands like a light fizzling and burning out just as quickly. She sighed in disappointment “I don’t like this either, Sol. Lets just focus on getting what we need done and getting out of here, alright?” She told said to him.

By now they’d stepped out of the outskirts and into the towns province, which opened up a closer look at the brilliant architecture and skyscrapers. To think a city could get this far without the phenomenon known as lacrima power. Her piercing blues flickered down to her hand as she unveiled the pamphlet they’d picked up for this job just the other day. She skimmed it for the address they were to meet the client’s assistant, looking between the arrangement of letters and the path ahead of her. The assistant was to brief them on where to find the lab, provide a map of the facility and the usb needed to download the information from the laboratory computers. Famine walked herself down the path with sol Following close behind. The job sounded simple enough Get to the facilities power core, start up the power again, boot the computers and download the data and a ride to the location. To Famine nothing seemed amiss aside from that ‘facility’ accident that had the hidden lab shut down completely when fifty died and the other teams that had been recruited to do the same job and did not come back. But…. her and Sol would do just fine…. “I think we're almost to central district.” Famine said, reminding Sol that is where they were to meet them at midnight.

Sol had to admit that the fact that these people could live without magic amazed him and confused him as well, however what was making him upset was the fact that while not that many people were out and about on the streets the few that were stared at the dragon and his guild master like they were freaks, Sol didn’t appreciate that at all and he bared his teeth at them and they quickly turned their gaze elsewhere.” I don’t like being looked at like that” he growled lightly , while Famine looked at the information on the pamphlet Sol thought about what the mission was and what information they had. The task seemed simple but the fact that 50 people had been killed in an ..accident was something that raised a red flag in the dragons mind.

It told the dark haired man that something or things were in that facility and that whatever it was it was something that could kill people easy and that made Sol uneasy since they were without magic. The slayer knew though that if they kept their guard up they would be fine.” Alright Famine though my gut feeling about where our mission is at is not good, if its alright with you when we get there I would like to take the lead since I have sharper senses and I can see perfectly in the dark” he said and hoped she would accept his request at the end. While he didn’t have his magic that didn’t stop his dragon slayer senses at all and his night vision would be a godsend in the facility.

As they reached the central district Sol peered around for the person they were supposed to meet and he started to pace while they waited for the client to arrive and he glanced at Famine after a moment or two.” hey Famine do we have any information on what is in the Facility” he asked as he glanced up at the clock nearby. It was almost midnight and he had yet to see the person they needed to meet but then again they were early. Sol had to admit that his dragon form made it rather easy for them to reach the neutral grounds in record time. Now that they were here all they had to do was get the task done and they would be richer and hopefully unscathed .

Catching the sound of footsteps Sol turned to see someone approaching the two of them and he turned to face the newcomer.”Ah you’re here I hope it was no trouble getting here” the lab assistant said before sol scoffs.” only trouble is that we can’t use any magic but I digress, is there anything you can tell us about the facility and spare no detail I would like us to be prepared” the dragon said as he waited for the man to start explaining and leading them to the facility

The apprentice held a look with Sol as he asked of more information, he agreed, he was here to inform them after all. “Well, aside from the standard get in and get in and get out parts you are going to want to power the generators back up inside and boot the lab’s computers, extracting all the server data onto this USB". He handed it over to them but not before gathering more materials for the two of them “ A map of the facility’s interior.” Famine grabbed the folded blueprint page as he handed it to her. “And data on all of the… experiments that were left behind in that lab.” He explained, passing over a tan file folder with various tabs labeling the contents inside with titles such as Ex 1048 and Ex 173. Famine subtly rose a brow but decided not to look too much into the sum of paperwork until they were there, she slid them into a satchel she had brought with her that held her tome and a set of daggers since she knew neutral grounds would cut off her access to her pocket dimensions.

“As quickly traveling again by any means is now more or less impossible, thanks to the magic restricting field, I’ve had a carriage called to take the two of you up to the lab." Famine gave a wide eyed expression at the word carriage and gave a sideways look to her ace who she didn’t doubt was in protest.

“How long will it take.”  Famine inquired of the stranger who abruptly responded back

“No more than ten minutes, why?”

“Just concerned about...making good time.” She lied

He seemed satisfied enough by his answer and began to gather up his bearings, likely preparations to leave them. “I’ve done my job.” He announced “Now do yours.” They finalized before dismissing themselves and turning back around where they had come and disappeared around the next block of dark buildings.

Just as he had promised, On the corner of the small park that marked the center block of the city was an ominous horse drawn coach. The guild master cleared her throat tasting the name of the dragon slayer in her mouth ”Sol,” She sighed, moving forward towards the buggy whether or not he would follow. “You can't dragonify here and now this is our quickest way there,” She said aside to him going up the step and grabbing the cab door. “and If you will not go I can handle this mission myself.” She told him almost the certain that the idea of her heading into this kind of danger on her own would motivate Sol to do anything to stop her; including facing his motion sickness. Famine extended her hand out for him.

Terror in the Labs (Job/Famine) Empty Re: Terror in the Labs (Job/Famine)

Post by Sol 13th July 2017, 1:07 am

Sol glanced alongside his guild master at the folder and the contents that were inside and while the job sounded extremely simple something in Sols body told him that if they didn’t take the upmost caution they would both be dead before sun up. While he mulled it over one word was uttered by the assistant that made Sol stiffen and gain a noticeable look of discomfort… The word Carriage. Sol had no fear of transportation but he didn’t enjoy the feeling that he would vomit his guts up at every bump and every subtle motion of a carriage or a boat. It seemed that Famine relized this and Sol Sighed in defeat. He was in for a rough ten minutes but he would bare it at least untill the job was done.

The Assistant left but not before he made the poison dragon feel the urge to rip his throat out from his last comment. Sols anger however vanished when Famine brought up the point that this was the fastest route to the lab and if he didn’t go that she would do it herself. At that the slayer steeled himself and followed her.”You know I won’t let you do this alone I would just rather not be puking my guts up but if I have to bare with motion sickness for a while then so be it” the dark dragon said calmly as he took her hand and followed her into the cab.

Once they were inside Sol calmed down and he sat alongside Famine with his arms crossed with a neutral expression on his face that was untill the cab started to move, as soon as the horse made the vehicle lurch forward Sol’s face turned a nasty shade of green and his expression turned to one of intense discomfort as his stomach kept turning on itself every bump on the road they hit and he closed his eyes as he took a few deep breaths even though he felt himself get more sick thru the motion of it.” Famine please distract me I won’t feel the effects as bad if I’m not focused on it” he asked his guild master softly as he didn’t dare risk talking to loudly or moving to much at risk of making his motion sickness even worse.

Sol honestly hated his weakness since it made him feel powerless and even more feeble then an elderly human, however he did that some solace in the fact that all slayers had this weakness even the former dragon king Acnologia had this problem and it seemed that the more powerful a slayer became the debilitating the motion sickness became which was not fun for any slayer

Post by Sybil 16th August 2017, 2:29 am

Just as Famine had foreseen, Sol wouldn’t be caught dead abandoning his guild master-- especially on a trip and a task like this one. This is what she liked so much about him. He was dedicated. “How...considerate of you.” The dark mage chuckled with a smile when Sol insisted he would accompany her regardless of his wellness. Famine Voluntarily reached to tug his hand  as he went up the carriage step and came inside, quickly sitting down on the buggy bench beside her. The seat gave a small creak as she sat down against the wall and folded her hands behind her head a short moment. Her piercing blues flickered back over to Sol just as quickly albeit.

“Distract you?” her lips curled into a little devilish smile as she echoed the words. “ If you insist.” Famine knew buy the hue of his face that he would  only grow more sickly from then on out-- hence why she laid his head down across her lap and allowed him to lay down during the uphill trek. Famine leaned over him, dusty-blonde strands shifting at gravities pull to reach down towards Sol’s face until she brushed them behind her ear, another hand tapping a finger at her Ace’s chin and then to pull his lip with her finger nail. “Just don’t vomit, don’t think about any of that.” She insisted lowering herself to force a few messy kisses upon Sol.Though maybe force was the wrong word, as Famine was confident Sol would have no complaints regarding these affections. At this rate, the trip would be over for him before he knew it.

“I wanna see how quiet you can be-- It’s going to be like a game.” She whispered to him albeit mischievously as her icy hands felt at the hem of his shirt. Her fingers trailed up against the bare flesh of his torso. Never one to consider boundaries she shifted over until she straddled Sol where he laid down. If this little game of hers didn’t keep Sol distracted she didn’t know what would do him well. “Feeling any better yet?”

Post by Sol 17th August 2017, 11:12 am

Sol could only remain silent as he felt his stomach turn again with another bump before he heard his guild master question his requested and he caught the wicked smile on her face before she laid him down and put his head on her lap and he sighed a bit.”thank you Famine” he said softly as he started to feel less sick, she kissed him and shile she told him not to vomit at that moment Sol didn’t even feel sick as he grinned and let his lovely guild master distract him. Feeling her straddle him and her cold hands under his shirt he inhaled sharply the the tempeture difference but it wasent unpleasant.”the question is can you remain silent as well my dear” he teased before they hit a sharp bump and while it made Sol feel slightly sick it was no where near what he had felt before .

Hell yes” he whispered before he let his claws hands trail along her legs lightly. True to what was told to them they arrived at the destination in ten minutes and as the carriage came to a stop the door took a moment to open and Sol slowly stepped out of the coach running a hand thru his hair to fix it and he fixed his shirt as well as he walked out of the carriage and waited for Famine to step out.” I’m hoping for a repeat of that on the way back” he mumbled to himself with a small smirk on his face. One thing was for certain he had been distracted and now he was more then ready for what came next.

Looking at the entrance Sol narrowed his eyes as moved over to a keypad and entered the code that was on the papers that was given to Famine and he sneezed at the amount of dust that was released as the door slid open.”ugh been a long time since this was opened” he stated as he glanced at his guild master before he stepped inside and took a good look around. His eyes took in the darkness and he saw thru it with his night vision gained from his shadow dragon half as he listened intently as well for any signs of danger with his enhanced hearing. After a moment of utter silence and no sign of movement the dragon motioned for Famine to enter. He would take the lead on this mission since he had better senses and untill they got the lights up and running he was the best as sensing danger early. He sniffed the air for a moment and caught scent of nothing before he glanced at Famine.”can you pass me the map I don’t like the feeling in this place” he mumbled. He wasn’t scared but something about this place had him on edge and for good reason.

The guild master’s tender grip disappeared all too soon when Sol’s sharpened fingernails dragged down her legs, scratching delicately at the skin beneath her clothes. In no time flat she was sliding off his shirt and helping him find her zipper.

    Fade

It had been a bumpy ride for her too in more than just the one way.

Famine was not long behind Sol, finishing tugging up the inside zipper of her clothes up her back and sliding her hood back on her head head of disheveled hair as she followed him out and dismissed the coach. Now they proceed into the lab, it appeared to be a medium building with various radio transmitters and satellite dishes protruding from the side.

With the power since cut and the thing covered in a thick layer of dust covering the doors keypad, Famine was truly surprised when it responded to the codes Sol punched in and the iron doors popped opened, spraying rust and shrieking by the hinges. Famine stifled a small smirk in the dark at Sols sneeze. Regardless they made their way inside They stepped in front of a large office lobby. This was likely the place all the men and women in lab coats started their day with a cup of coffee at the table and a small chit chat with each others co workers before they punched in and delved into the reality of this lab. For now what remained in the dark room were tipped over seats and floor lamps along with a snapped coffee table. Famine brushed the debris with her heel. “Looks like a tornado came through here, I wonder if the rest of the lab is that way.” Famine gave a nod down the cubicle lined hall and towards an old fashioned box elevator with the gate. The guild master eventually shook the paper out of the ones in her satchel and handed the floor plans over to Sol. “This is just the standard base of operations-- what I’m guessing these employees wanted everyone to see when they walked in. Whatever else has been kept hidden, including the information on the computers and the generators will that will be at least several layers down.” She justified as she moved aside him in the dimness towards the miners box, her hand tugged open the gate revealing it was powered by a crank system to lower and raise and the corner floor of the elevator was a dry stain, famine could only assume blood, the faculty smelt of death sure maybe the bodies from the accident had been recovered from the first level but anyone who had gone down further. Famine tilted her head beckoning Sol in as soon as she laid hands on the crate the fencing that left the elevator open slammed back shut with a loud rattle but never the less Famine rowed the lever backwards. They’s now begin there decedent and pass the point of no return. The only way now was down “Have you looked at the map much, what level should we stop?”

Terror in the Labs (Job/Famine) Empty Re: Terror in the Labs (Job/Famine)

Post by Sol 9th September 2017, 4:20 pm

Sol quickly took the map as Famine made the comment of how messed up the first floor was. It was rather true considering how much was destroyed and the dragon just shrugged.”considering the limited information we have in here they most likely tried to leave in a hurry but to no avail” he said before he sniffed the air once more. Like famine he could smell death and while he was no stranger to it in a situation such as this it set his nerve on edge. His ruby eyes gleamed in the darkness which to most would frighten any sane person off but then again who said the things in this compound were human.

Staying close to Famine while they moved the poison dragons eyes scanned the map and he made mental notes of where certain things were at and also warning for some of the creatures posted on the map and certain points as well.” yeah depending on what they were doing most companys want people to see a happy smiling face while they design killing machines and other dirty secrets in the shadows even with no magic this place is no different.” he observed as they entered the hand crank elevator. At his guild masters question the dragon folded the floor plans and glanced at the walls noticing a big B1 as they descended downwards.”The Generator is down on Level five or the bottem level so we will need to get there first and then the computers are on Level three and there are quite a few strange and deadly creatures in here if the warnings on the floor plans are anything to go by” he explained.

Sol was not worried since he had the map memorized but still his worry for his guild master was rather high.”Famine I know we have reached the point of no return but I pray we have no bad encounters here. I just hope we can escape from here quickly” he said softly. If Famine looked she would see deep concern for her in his face and eyes as he steeled himself for when they reached the 5th floor. Sol cracked his knuckles and flexed his claws to get them ready for any beast that dared to cross their path. He may have no magic at the moment but he was still a deadly creature and he would end the life of any person or creature that threatened him or his queen.

Post by Sybil 11th September 2017, 5:44 pm

Famine, once she’d given the map to Sol returned the map to her own hands, but not before tipping it in the dark elevator and spilling some of the folder's contents. In response, she quickly knelt down to scoop the parchment up.

Her eyes flickered hastily between the photographs that scattered the floor, The weak light bulbs from each of the floors emergency lighting flickered through the elevators grate and upon the floor as they descended each of the levels. Each strobe of light Famine laid her eyes on another of the horrible experiments, photographs of their twisted anatomy, the experimentation, and destruction of the monsters. A hand curled then clenched as she threw it to her lips in disgust, the other moving to sweep up the images from the floor and slide them back into the folder they had fallen from…  "Though..." the self-proclaimed queen of basilisks began in an all to troubled tone “Seems to be more to this place than I originally thought.” Quoted Famine without admitting she was disgusted or worried. Killing machine’s she thought, repeating Sol's word choice again in her head.

Another damned lab. Clutching the folder to her chest a silence fell over her, thoughts passing behind her eyes like the shadows flickering over her face as the elevator slid down. Almost immediately she’d been reminded of  her old….friend….Lance’s story. How his twisted uncle had taken him from his home and conducted obscene experimentation upon his magic. Before she abandoned her identity she’d been through similar strife. Her parents were slaughtered by a guild dedicated to cutting down wizard parents and taking away gifted children as apprentices to nurture the raising of their magic for personal use.

Famine was snapped back to reality just as quick as her mind had wandered away from her. The wheels and wires squeaked with the teeth gritting squeak akin to nails on a chalkboard as the cube slowed down in the level shaft to stop them just in time for the grate door to slide open
Now in front of them a long dark hallway with the occasional pulsing of an emergency light. One minute the hall was empty and the next, a stuffed doll-- a bear was sitting in the middle of it. Rather than flinching away Famine stepped out of the shaft, leaning towards the odd plush that had appeared so abruptly.

In a quiet manner she stepped towards it, unable to see how the button sewn eyes seemed to be following her every move as she came closer. Passively, and especially after the photos she had seen, Famine knew something was wrong here… and yet she found herself reaching out to the little brown button-eyed bear. How precious... She would've loved to of come across more things like this when Ahote was young, maybe even now…. He’d always be a child at heart to her.

Post by Sol 4th November 2017, 9:07 pm

Sol could smell death and decay from the moment that they hit the floor they needed to get on and he gently stepped out of the elevator along with his guild master, however after a moment a small teddy bear seemed to appear out of nowhere and sat in the middle of the hallway. Sol instantly went on guard and he followed Famine but when he saw her reaching out for it he quickly grabbed her arm just as the bear suddenly swiped at her. It was then that the bear started to grow and emit blood as Sol quickly grabbed Famines hand and pulled her forward as they would pass by the bear and quickly duck a corner to try and avoid the creature before it could try to harm them.

Whatever you do don’t let yourself be entranced like that again Famine the only thing we can trust here is each other and we need to stay beside each other no matter what, if we get split apart then we are as good as dead here” he said trying to calm himself down before he suddenly heard movement from where the bear had been and Sol quickly motioned for Famine to follow him. “come on I don’t want to think about what that creature can do espically since we don’t have any magic here” he said hoping that Famine would not want to battle the creature. As the creature had reached maximum size which was five feet tall it headed down the hall towards the location of the two mages and it seemed intent on harming them or killing them if it managed to get close enough to do so. It seemed that everything in this lab was build to kill no matter how innocent they looked or sounded.

Terror in the Labs (Job/Famine) Empty Re: Terror in the Labs (Job/Famine)

Post by Sybil 19th November 2017, 11:04 pm

Famine felt Sol’s palm close around her arm and tug her backward into a stumble. Just as her feet shifted her a few paces backward. The eerie stuffed animal morphed and a clawed bear paw swiped, and the tips of its sharp talons swung and missed within a mere hair of her face. She sensed Sol's grip as it shifted down to clutch her wrist when he darted forwards down the hall, dragging her behind. The mage turned her head to glance back down the dim hall behind them and look through her shifting bangs at what creature had become as it was staggering to it's feet and beginning to head down the hall in pursuit before he slid them into a corner to avoid another swing of the creature’s claws.

Now wasn’t the best time For Sol to be explaining this to her, but she understood his words were said with her safety in concern. Abruptly he pulled them along out of the corner they’d dived into so they could continue hurrying down the hall away from the...thing that was after them. Her hand knotted into a fist at her side. Damn… she’d forgotten so quickly that they were magicless here too. She wondered if that meant....immortality didn’t as strongly protect her here as it did when she was truly under the blessing of Eris’ gift, her arc of time. Soon she would realize not all of Eris’ powers that had been given to Famine were non-existent in the land without magic….

“T...There.” she stammered between a exhale, nodding her head at a door left hanging open down the abandoned dark lab hallway that was littered with abandoned carts holding beakers, surgery equipment and the occasional dirty lab coat on a coat hook outside the doors. It was that white lab coat dangling off this doorknob that drew her attention to their escape.
Famine tugged back against Sol who’d been so keen on outrunning the danger with her, yanking him through the doorway. She didn’t know if it was the adrenaline of being chased by some Frankenstein's build-a-bear or the running through the dark hall but her head was beginning to ache and her eyes burned whenever she saw the eerie flicker of the emergency lighting in the hall.

--Famine still gave it her damndest to focus on the situation, whirling around her attention snapped back to the door that was still open and left askew.  By the time she’d approached the lab door to push it closed a big bear paw with tangled curly brown and blood matted fur had already stuck itself through the door’s side. --Focus focus…! Time was turning backward in  Famine’s head, her vision was blurring and new images from the future were already assaulting her mind. white snow, up to her calves rather than her ankles as though she was seeing something through someone’s eyes that were shorter. Famine pressed her back against the door now desperately not trying to loose her hold on the present moment, digging her heels into the cold tile beneath her and pressing her shoulders back against it hard. [/i] a village, she knew this one from the mountain. The claws swiped down against her shoulders and arm, tearing open the back of her black clothes around one of her shoulder blades, making the white serpent head of her guild visible under the line of blood that rolled down her shoulder and back.

Pain-- It was a familiar feeling enough. She felt the burning at her temple intensify even though she hadn’t been wounded at her head it felt so stones that had been dug up from the snow and kept on a porch for the opportune time. Then the scent of blood.

Famine found herself abruptly screaming the name of her son when she slammed her back against the door with enough force to sever the paw which wasn’t left oozing blood but pouring cotton stuffing. When the door was shut relief fell over her once she snapped the lock but it was too soon to celebrate. She was already shaking out of nerve. She wasn’t worried about the little bit of a wound she’d gotten that wasn’t healing right away but she was worrying over what she’d seen had troubled her and would likely worry her throughout the whole rest of the trip.

    ---

(Note: It says in the weak monster description that if the bear is severed in any way or cut, I guess the door counts for that, that a familiar will grow from the injured or separated point of the creature, you can use this to help meet word count, Sol, seeing as they would have closed a growing familiar in the room with them. If you were confused by the last few paragraphs Famine was distracted while trying to close out the teddy bear by the triggering of her Arc of Time passive that includes those visions future. Visions were again for Ahote in an upcoming thread between them and  myself where Ahote beats up and kills a villager from the settlements who’s been stoning and patronizing him back home.)

Sol growled as they caught their breath and he felt his hands start trembling before he let out a snarl and slammed his fist against the wall beside him with the arm not on famines side. It stopped his shaking as he could just hear his foster father Ballom mocking him in his head. “Your afraid you’re a dragon one of the greatest creatures to walk this earth and your afraid of a teddy bear. Pick yourself up you’re my son now act like it and stop trembling. Face your enemy and steel your resolve! Face it head on and tear at its throat LIKE A REAL FUCKING DRAGON!”he heared his fathers voice roar in his mind as his eyes sharpened and he bared he teeth as he felt his fear leave him. He was the son of a poison dragon and the future dragon king he would not be scared by a stuffed animal no matter how disturbing it was.

It seemed while they were trying to calm down and regroup the bear had found them and managed to catch Famine with a claw before she slammed the door and caused a piece of it to break off and it started to mutate and soon became a little teddy bear with razor sharp claws and teeth. It lunged at famine before Sol suddenly caught it with his claws and he rapidly started to stab it with his claws while ripping it to shreds with an animalistic vigor . Once the small beast had gone silent and still Sol stood and gave a few heaving heavy breaths before he calmed and looked at famine. He saw her wound and he saw her distress and he focused before he would draw some chemicals into his mouth and he would spit it into her wound. It was a pain reliever along with a disinfectant plus a coagulant so it would ease her pain prevent infection and stop the bleeding, he may not be able to use magic but his body could still make chemicals and that didn’t require magic.

Hearing the beast outside scraping at the door Sol saw that Famine was shaking and he gently touched her face with his hands.”Famine calm down I don’t know what has you riled but you must put it out of your mind for now, we need to complete the mission then we can worry about things later” he said trying to keep her calm and settle her nerves. All Sol knew was if this was a taste of what was to come then they were in for a very rough mission and they needed to get this done as quickly as possible or this place could be their tomb.

Famine’s head still reeled from the mental assault and she still saw whiteness behind her eyelids. She was so focused on recovering and keeping her back against the door that she gave no notion of paying attention as Sol stepped between her and the familiar that had morphed from the severed bear claw and proceeded to tear it apart as Famine hushed the ringing in her head. Famine looked down, seeing the now shredded new remains on the floor. It seemed neither of them could get a break.

“Holy mother of Hakobe…..” The seer cursed under her breath, Urgent to step away from the door Famine grabbed a broom attached to a dustpan in the corner and slid it through the door handle behind her reinforcing the locked door. Now, she stepped away from the still thumping door. Azure eyes blinked down to her arm. She suppressed the urge to grimace, knowing he hadn’t spat into her wound out of disrespect but to aid her. Famine could feel the corrosive mixture sizzle against her torn nerves, bubble, and slowly start to burn the wound shut from the inside out. Now she stepped away from the door, watching the lock switched at the knob and the broom keep what hit the door on the outside out. Having blindly stepped into Sol in the darkness she glanced up at him, wincing when his claw-tipped fingers touched her face. Just as gently as he’d come to hold her she slid out of his hold. “It’s this lab,  it’s making the eyes Eris gave me go haywire…. We must be a lot closer to hell in this place….” Famine muttered. “I want to get home, I feel like something amiss at the mountain.” She mumbled, knowing even if their was-- even if Ahote was hurt. There was nothing they could do until they started the generators, rebooted the data, and got out of here.

Having completely peeled away from Sol now she groped forwards in the darkness. After bumping into a lab table she found another doorway at the other corner of the room. “Come on now, You said you wanted to go ahead and lead… the generators that they needed to power this facility could be in this next set of rooms."

Sol could only nod at Famines exclamation of what was going on, this was no doubt the most dangerous mission either of them had ever gone on since they normally had magic but in this neutral hell they were powerless except for their own strength and any weapons they had be it natural or constructed. “I know how you feel Famine we just need to be cautious and avoid anything else that might be designed to kill in this lab, I worry that if that teddy bear was just a sample of what could be to come then what could be the worst thing in here” he said his red eyes glowing in the darkness.”whatever we do we need to stay close but your right we need to keep going “ Sol said as he looked at Famines wound for a quick moment to make sure it was alright before he went over to the door that wasent barricaded and he hit the keypad only for it to creak and bearly open.

Sol sighed and he he glanced thru the crack to make sure nothing was on the other side before he gripped the door and he grunted as he forced it to open enough for Famine and himself to get thru. And he kept ahead of her, while he led the way he suddenly heard something faint very far away but the sound put him on edge, it was the sound of something in chains with said shackles groaning in protest as if wanting to break from the strain. He could hear a piercing shriek faintly and he motioned for Famine to pick up the pace.”Shit we need to move quickly something else in this fucking facility is moving and from what I can hear it makes that teddy bear seem cuddly” he said as he hit the keypad on another door and the room slid open to reveal the generator room that they had been looking for, Sol quickly moved for famine to get inside the room and he then shut the door before he stood guard in front of it to make sure whatever he heard didn’t get in untill they managed to get the power going.

god whatever I hear is not good those chains aren’t going to last long I only hope we get the hell out of here before they break” he muttered to himself as he listened to whatever was chain up shriek and keep pulling at the chains that held it.”What the hell were these idiots doing in here?” he questioned since this kinda if experemantation was extremely stupid without anyway to take care of these subjects in the event they break out like this it was the work of amatures.

Famine watched wearily through the dark laboratory room as Sol ambled from one end of the room to another, picking up the folder which their client had handed to them when they arrived, famine stepped forward through the aby, ramming right into a table she. She let out a small noise, blushing in embarrassment having been masked by the dark, she laid a hand on the corner of the surface and pushed herself away. Much to the mages surprise a cold and somewhat dried residue stuck to her fingertips that had touched the surface. it smelt of copper, a scent often associated with blood. Famine felt a little uneasy know, rubbing her hand off on her clothes and bumping into sol now when she tried to catch up. Dust wafted from the long-abandoned keypad and when Sol forced his way through the door the hinges creaked in protest, door unwilling to open for them. She squeezed herself through after him and even in the dimness encompassing them she could make out a long room that was narrow on its sides, she could feel tangled wires at her feet  and see the little pixels blink in the corners of a few screens that still kept battery power from an unknown source, but clearly not enough to boot up the rest of the lights or the computers on the other side of the labs.

"I think we actually were chased in the right direction, Sol,” she said to her ace when she nudged past him and stepped closer to the carts of electronics in the room, servers, extended outlets, you name it, it was there. She was looking around the room when she stepped forwards her leg got caught on the handle of an object on the floor she rebalanced herself and put her hand on the top of the box-like shape. Wait, this felt like it, the generator.

In the not so distant distance there was the snapping of bolts and the clanking of a thin chain of sorts tumbling to the ground, then a tapping like the pattering feet of a light but multi-legged creature, then the crackling little cry of a beast completely alien to Famine. She slowed her breathing to listen to whatever was making the sound; trying to track it as it came closer.

However, before she could activate the generator her hand sat on she realized the scuttering footsteps weren't coming from the ground but above and on the ceiling. Famine rolled out of the way, “Move! Then get the generator turned on---” she shouted abruptly as she stepped backwards in the darkness after the shape dropped from the ceiling in front of them. Famine had its attention and, though a bit frantic, she nodded in the dark towards the generator, begging Sol with her eyes to get it working.

Famine in her fleeing steps backwards bumped into a desk table at the end of the power room, knocking over a cup of aged office utensils. From It, Famine grabbed blindly in the darkness retrieving a pair of scissors which she sunk into the experiments pliable flesh, and as soon as she had she felt the skin of it clenching around the scissors which now sunk into their body as though to ingest.

A moment passed where Famine blinked as though dumbfounded and heard a sound she could only describe as grotesque following the shifting of their flesh, insect-like front legs split into two blade points as though to replicate the scissors. Famine ducked just as the bladed claw hit the head where her head once was and slid under its scissor arm. If Sol did his part and finally got that generator to run in her stead Famine would rush back to the door with him. They needed to get up the elevator loft and to the tech lab up a few floors.

Even though Famine spoke to him and mentioned that they had actually been chased in the right direction Sol was more focused on the noise he was hearing as he suddenly heard a snap and instantly is eyes went wide.”oh no its loose whatever it is”" he said as there was a small amount of panic in his voice as he heard the skittering even louder then Famine did and as soon as she said for him to move Sol dove out of the way as the creature descended from the ceiling and he instantly felt panic flow thru him as he dashed to the keypad on the generator and he quickly hit the buttons and the facility lights suddenly turned on as the beast released another shriek and it turned its attention to Sol who had turn the lights on and Sol could only dive out of the way again as the creature took a swipe at him.

Sol felt the blades of the beast barely miss his head as he dove underneath them and rolled as he hit the ground near Famine before he grabbed his guild masters wrist and lead her with him back to the door as the beast got confused at what had happened. “Go thru the door I’ll shut it when I go thru” he said as he waited for her to move while he glanced back and kept an eye on the beast. Once Famine got thru Sol would quickly push thru the space as the beast then caught sight of them and screeched as it rushed for the door Sol would slam the door shut and quickly grab a cabinet that was nearby and barricaded the door. “ we gotta keep moving that thing is a death sentence if it catches us” he muttered before he suddenly heard loud banging and scraping on the door.”Shit shit shit shit!”he cursed as he listened to the door they had first entered from to escape the to see if the bear had vanished.

Sure enough he hit the key pad and the door opened to reveal nothing. “Thank god its gone lets hurry I dunno how much longer that things gonna get contained.” he said as he lead her towards the lift and as he did he shut the door as they exited and he also caught sight of an emergency lock as they ran towards the lift and he quickly slammed his fist on it and an bunkhead door shot up from the ground and cut off the lift from anything else.”Thank god” he muttered as he would start cranking the lever to bring them back up to the third floor, they had managed to get a brief moment to relax but who knows how long the creature would be contained down on the floor below.

Eventually the sounds of clawing inside the elevator lift subsided and the cage door rattled open on the third floor. This level of the laboratory was far from the shiny white science fiction fantasy Famine may have imagined when first approaching the complex. It was abandoned, something you’d expect to see in a horror documentary complete with rioting lab experiments with sharp teeth and bloody claws too apparently. Like some asylum here there was no openness, no space, nothing shined or had the smell of disinfectant. Instead the way through is down a long hallway so narrow that if a wheelchair or trolley were to come to other way they would have to dip into a side room to let it go by. The walls were once painted,  Famine could tell that from the cream flakes that remain, though mostly they show the grey undercoat or perhaps the concrete beneath that. The floor was uneven from so much traffic with both feet and wheels. Even with the lights now on due to the amount of dust around the sheets in front of the light bulbs it was darker than a mausoleum. The air was stagnant like her and Sol had just gone into some pit. There are were hand sanitizers on the walls, suggesting the scientists didn’t care how they would prevent the spread of germs here.

She stepped out into the dim but surely lit hallway now, able to fully see the scrape left along her arm now that was trying to heal;--though, it still did burn and needed to be cleaned. With that beast they had just run into though, there was no time to stop. Famine looked down at the USB in her hand before returning it within her pockets. “We need to locate the computers, getting in is probably going to be a pain in the ass,” she grumbled, eyes flickering back to the shaft as though afraid the beast could catch up with them any second and drop in.

Despite the fact that the two of them were higher up now Sol could still hear the beast down on the lower level scratching around and causing all kinds of ruckus.the dragon knew that most likely that creature would find a way to reach the upper levels and find them but for now they were away from it and they had to focus on the task at hand. "I should be able to get us inside, and from what I remember on the map the computer room was rather close to the elevator. The big thing is that we need to get done fast I have no doubt that that thing below is smart enough to use the air vents again and I have no clue if the vents connect the levels to each other” Sol explained as he walked along side her,

Sol kept his ears tuned for any sound of skittering in the vents and his eyes constantly darted to any vent he saw, after a while Sol caught the sight of the numbers near the doors and he gently touched her shoulder when he saw the right door.” I think this is it Famine now lets see if the door opens” He said as he touched the keypad on the door but the door didn’t budge except for the sound of a metallic groan. “Shit well I guess its up to me to open it” the dragon muttered as he dug his iron hard claws into the crack in the middle of the door and he growled before he started to pry the doors open and after a moment they started to slowly open before sol slipped his hands in for a better grip and with a loud grunt he forced the doors open and inside was multiple computers.

Alright looks like this is the place all right but hopefully getting the data won’t take too long” Sol said softly as he walked inside and moved to the side to let Famine inside, Sol saw a ventilation shaft in the room an he turned towards it as Famine would deal with the computers Sol just remained focused on that air duct and turned his ears just incase he heard something unpleasant heading for the room. Despite what he knew about this land Sol tried as hard as he could to form shadows but just like famine his hands only crackled with black sparks and Sol growled in frustration, even his chain enkidu couldn’t be summoned and that made him worry even more since he had no weapons but his claws and teeth and while he knew that would deal with most enemys the creatures here were not what he was used to and with no magic it put him on edge.

Little by little the creaking and nerving hinges of the elevator lifted her and Sol to the next layer of the twisted laboratory, and a simple hallway opened up in front of them. Thankfully there was no foe waiting on the other side. Famine followed Sol and stepped through the grate as it slid open with a squeak and the scent of rust wafted in her nose. The two followed the scent of ancient but still gently humming computer fans and Famine turned her head to peer into a doorless room on the left side of the hall. She stepped in to reveal a room filled to capacity with a lineup of tables, desktop with the monitors one would call dinosaur. The technology was huge and clunky, and clearly manufactured before that lacrima power revolution which seemed relevant. After all this was Fiore's anti-magic capitol, they’d never know the joys of magic and lacrima power that had slimmed all technology down a decade ago. -- Dust sat on every surfaces like a sand cloud had blown through the lab. Famine paced and found the most intimidating computer station and pulled up a wheeled seat.

The computer was dusty and archaic. The mage doubted it had as much RAM as her morning coffee. After poking around unable to find the hole that fit the device her client gave her she eventually managed to plug in the USB into the proper place---she thought and pressed the clunky power switch. An orange light glows dimly on the front section of the computer tower and fans blew out a sheet of dust at her. Whatever secrets the old lab techs in the white coats had been hiding it would all be on here...or so she hoped. A flashing white arrow appeared on an otherwise blank screen awaiting instructions, but then what had she expected, Windows?

The dirty blonde turned her head back over to where Sol had taken his post advising him it would take her...a moment, or quite a few moments in her case, rubbing dust off the keyboard, she used her other hand to slide the folder out of her satchel that had been tucked against her precious spellbook. Famine, after shaking the dust bunnies off her fingers flipped through the file folder, the grotesque lab data and eventually found some resources that she thought would be of some assistance on her endeavor. Manuals.

If there was any task at all that Famine would lower her guard and essentially close out the rest of her surroundings it was reading. Many who knew her were confident she could read through a hurricane when she was focused--A skill she only seemed to obtain after the horseman's tome forced its knowledge upon her that long and dark year ago. By the time She looked up she could have sworn more dust had already settled once she had scanned through the manual front to back. “Hey, I think I’ve--” She started, turning to glance over her shoulder where Sol had been pacing and watching “I’ve got it..?” she finished but surely enough the only response was the echo of her own voice in an empty room. Maybe-- He’d just stepped down the hall while she’d been occupied. Famine wouldn’t be too surprised… She’d get to her work and try to give Sol at least another moment,

“Sol?” No response, ghostly silence and a draft that came down the hall to

Her heart hammered against her ribs as though she had just swallowed a mouthful of caffeine. Not having Sol right at her side where he had always been inflicted a great deal of anxiety in her, regardless, she looked at what she could do as for getting the info downloaded. Leaning back in frustration, Famine let some glittering beads of sweat trickle down her forehead. She stared at the contrasting white pixels against black as if all the URLs and fragments of code clogged the gears of her mind. Although the overheated tower scorched the table where her palms rested around the keyboard and the jungle of algorithms played a laser show in the reflective gloss on her eyes. She held her breath to concentrate as if her life depended on it. The basilisk's eyes combed the monitor in search of the sign she needed, moving from side to side rapidly like the eyes of a dreaming person but wide open. Nothing could be heard in the stuffy computer room but the violent beating of fingers against a keyboard and the increasingly unbearable spin of the CPU cooler fan. In the air, the scent of this labs decay and hot electronics was not accompanied by sweat. The tension and suspense solidified. Suddenly-- There was a scratching in the distance.

“Sol?” She called out quickly, rotating her chair and peeping to look around the abandoned room again. Only the hum of the servers greeted her and the eerie flickering of the light aside her echo. She clutched her hand tight, nails biting into skin and her knuckles jutting up and white like the spine of a serpent. With a creak she shifted back up to her feet feeling the cool tile under her heel as she stood back up to her full height. She held a hand ready at her satchel where she kept her weapon and paced towards the open doorway with footfalls as quiet as a pin drop.

An empty hallway. Nowhere did the chronic underfunding of this lab feel more evident than in the hallways. They were for the most part crammed with trolleys Famine didn’t doubt once might of kept the experiments on their back, strapped in- eyes toward the naked fluorescent tubes that flicker as though they are on their last legs. In the brief gaps between these now empty wheeled beds the pale blue walls are deeply scored by the metal framed trolley, the drywall showing through like white scars. The cheap prints on the walls are insipid, so lacking in vibrancy that they appear sun-bleached in this windowless strip. The confined space magnifies every eerie little sound and creak that Famine heard. Famine even thought she could hear breathing outside of her own racing breaths and looked around but found nothing in the corridor. She stepped closer up to some of the niks in the wall and found… not all of them seemed to of been caused by ware. Higher up between the wall and the corver between the ceiling were scratches too. She quickly thought of the alien-like beast, it’s dark scales, and appendages that could take the properties of whatever weapon it consumed….  Another creak, and another tremor in her chest, the light above was now shaking at its strings as though it had been bumped.

Before Famine could so much as call out… It was already upon her, manifesting itself with a hard pound akin to a bag of bricks to the side of her head.  And then a slash of those scissor-like blades that clawed through her back, and upon the back of her legs. Famine’s legs gave out quickly and the fresh and deep rooted sting of pain dropped her to her knees. The shakiness in her head  dropped her completely to the ground in a painful tremor, body turning on its side a moment to see her assailant but before she could construct a clear picture everything seemed to drift apart like the pieces of a puzzle on the surface of water. The last thing she felt was the dragging of her body down the filthy lab hallway, fingers absently gripping at the smoot surface  to feel the very slight trailing of blood on the floor-- her blood until her digits relaxed completely

As though shed just woken up after a night at the bottle, very much hungover defined by the pounding in her head. The ridgid burning in her back and her legs. The stank of decay burned her nose as she rousted awake. Her eyes clenched a moment then brown lashes batted and fluttered open. She was in more pain than ever, but she was alive. A quick, though disoriented, look around the room revealed the creature had dragged here here and laying amongst her on the tables, in the corners were a bodies by the pile, none of them seeming to be previous participants of the lab staff, This caused Famine to shoot to sitting up eliciting a painful jut in her sliced back. They laid like dolls over the sides of counters, sat up in corners, limbs at awkward angles and heads held in such a way that they could not be sleeping. These bodies, once the repositories of people as alive her, were now abandoned shells left to rot in the catacomb of this damn lab. Famine thought thoughts of the dead she hadn’t in ages-- because she didn’t want it to be her laying there. Who would bury them and weep salty tears onto their grave? Who would send them away with a love song and kiss the breeze that carries them heaven-bound? Likely no-one at all. Some will be consumed by flies, the rats, and others simply decay, slowly giving up their flesh to the dust and showing their white bones to the harsh fluorescent lights.
Famine looked between them...these must of been all the others who’d taken and failed to return from this task before. This creature, it must of mistaken her as dead when they knocked her down in the hall… and famine was sure she would be soon if she didn’t get the job done, get out, and get her bleeding covered up. As she struggled and struggled to get back up to her feet she found herself unable too.Blue eyes frantically blinking around the room again,  she spied insignias from various guilds upon the bodies hat hadn’t yet become bone, some of the tattoos she hadn’t even seen before. Thankfully, no one bore her crest. She wondered a moment if someone would turn out in her same situation a few years from now and see that they didn’t recognize the insignia of Basilisk Fang which was visible upon the back of her shoulder, anong where her clothes had been sliced by razor claws. Famine knew she couldn’t continue to stew on this kind of thinking. If she did she’d never get out, she’d never get to see Ahote grow up, see that her guild remained unforgotten. And though due to the cuts dealt to the back of her knees she couldn’t stand, she couldn’t walk but she could still crawn. Famine placed her white palms against the cool tile in front of her and dragged her limp frame forwards through the doorway out and as she did she found with a look down the hall she was not alll too far from the computer lab where she was before. Now she knew where that scent of decay from before came from.

It was a long crawl back down the hallway to get back to where she started, she was growing numb from the loss of blood but her willpower kept her going. She was dragging herself back into the laboratory doors now, eyes blinking up to the computer at the end of the room where the usb hung from the device. She could taste the end of her task

Then-- her heart sang at the sound of a ticking, undoubtedly the clicking of that same beasts tongue against its maw. Famine dug her fingers into the stone of the ground harder, pulled her weight faster until she heard the heavy though agile aliens forum leap off the ceiling and right behind her. Famine was at the desk the computer terminal was now, and reaching up to the keypad on the desk surface. Her fingers were just out of reach and she stretched her shoulder that was in pain just enough to hit the keyboard which processed the command that would transfer the data. Sure… She did just finish her task, now leaning up against the side of the chair from the floor. But her chances of survival were slowly decreasing. Famine blinked back to stare in the face off the predator, the corners of her vision going hazy… just kill it she thought. Clearly a task easier said than done. And even in this case easier thought about.. Dreamt about.

She could hear the sizzling of tile beneath her where acidic saliva dripped from frothing teeth. Dissolving pieces of the granite floor, its razor claws scuffed against the floor with a sound like a nail across a chalkboard. Famine squinted her eyes shut, anticipating the pain of a final blow, clenching her fists at her side.

It was a funny sensation, even in the darkness a white light flurred behind her eyes and there was nothing. Not death, not yet at least. It was more of a memory, the exact feeling you got when your life flashed before your eyes. At first it wasn’t a sight, a strong sweet scent. In alley of rose the gardens even the aroma of the roses. Between the neat beds of crimson pouring from the wound at her side bloom the fragrance of a time machine, granting Famine a fleeting visit to the boy that she used to call a friend. If anyone asked her five years ago she would have said her best companions were Fairy Tail and truest friend with Lance Knighthunter. It was the memory of a rowdy guildhall in magnolia where the cherry blossoms bloomed in the summer and she got away with underage drinking and she loved it. To walk there was to be bathed in heady perfume. She once would run between the tables, small ragged boots over the leaves on the ground that blew in through an always open tavern door. In her mind it was confetti from the summer carnival and she was the undefeated victor of the magic games again! What a cute little imagination. The transitory evocation ended with passing strangers in loud conversation, and a long dark shadow landing me back in the present day. Her heels no longer wore those boots, she no longer smell of cherry blossoms and booze. Days are dull and Famine no longer dream of Magnolia festivals and competitions with her team.

The bitterness settled in her chest, opened up and bloomed like a red poisonous flower. She still had dreams, aspirations. Famine still was that snarky and humorously stubborn  maker mage deep down inside. Heero was right when he said she’d gotten week… as if she'd let that dead man be right about anything ever again after he left her to stew in her own vile devices. It was like she felt electricity shoot out every vein, her eyes stayed kneaded shut and the hands at her sides knotted into fists.

It was than that the dusty old tome that had settled safely in her lap lifted from its place across her legs like a ghost had just picked it up. There was a pop and a slow modest and liquid like cracking that sounded through the air. Azure eyes blinked open, half surprised she’d see anything again that next moment. But surely, there the creature was right in front of her on the ground , an eerily book shaped hole where its damned cranium used to be… and across the room the blood smeared and the tome sat at the end of the violent path. All knowing to Famine responsible for protecting its holder….

She tasted iron in her throat and smelt it in the air tangled in the aroma of dust and decay that plagued this lab… her last bit of strength pulled poth the usb from the computer with the data she’d collected and dragged her body across the crimson damned floor to her book that breathed like her child to cradle it in her arms to sleep.

A little unlike the life that flashed before her eyes this sleep was unpleasant and weather by luck, fortune, fate or what otherworldly device Famine had permission to believe she’d wake up in the town down the hill after being found outside the damned lab and watched over the entirety of the week she was asleep. Eyes flickered behind her eyelids at a surreal pace, taking in visions and dreams she’d had once upon a time.

    ---
Famine looked around her and realized she’d been in this place one or two times before. She was stuck in the same spiral staircase again. No matter if she would go upstairs or down, the firl would just keep coming back to the same spot. A light bulb overhead shines overhead, and it's the only light in the whole place. If she just put a single foot on a step of the stairs, it immediately gets turned off and would be left to navigate the utter darkness.  Typically this was no problem for Famine.. But in this dream, the shadows scared her more than relaxed her… Famine had only have two choice - to get back to her place or walk down the next floor in this darkness only to find herself in the same spot again. After thousands of attempts at escaping this place, Famine finally chose the wiser way - to stand still under that night and wait for this nightmare to be over. She did not know how she know this was a nightmare, but every time she had it, Famine know that it's not reality.

The mage took a few deep breaths trying to make herself comfortable in there while she’d wait to wake up. The light slowly moves from her to a door a few feet to her right. She steps out and slowly walks to me. She'd be just an ordinary woman at first but familiar, with a hint of resemblance to Famine’s own features. “Mom.” Famine saw into the marrow of the older woman's thoughts as she disappointedly tried to assess what her child had become. The  stairs were falling now and the light that went out was a star filled night.

Figuratively and literally the ghost of her own past was staring at her in the face and it had taken the form of a dead parent. The ghost was more silent than the grave it arose from, or in this case the bottom of that damned staircase. Now, not only the woman was different. But the surroundings. They stood in the middle of a graveyard, starting with heavy lidded eyes and a slack mouth. Her cheekbones accentuated the skeletal look and in her gaze her mind was robbed of emotion….what hit her most was how mom’s look was still all there in the decay and albiet, smothered in the stench of in death, she could still smell the perfume she was wearing the day she died. Instead of running, or screaming Famine stood more still than the mossy statues in the heart of the graveyard around her, the same one in oshibana her parents were dropped in when she was still missing. She was just as cold as the stones. The haunting image beckoned with fingers that rapidly faded to only a suggestion of form. The mage passed each grave without taking account of the path until she stood in a place that was unrecognizable but familiar at the same time. The ghost became more solid again, but this time her skin bore many silver scars, thick and jagged. Famine began to think new things, "I want to stay here with her, forever. To give up." The thought became a desire and her insides lit with an intensity to make it possible. Her weak body crumpled to the dirt, leaves and mud met the side of her narrow face and knees curled up against her like an unborn. It was then she heard an unfamiliar voice call to her, over and over, a warm hand at her shoulder rocking her. Famine opened her mouth to speak but nothing would come. She was frantic now, frightened.

There was no giving up, not after everything Famine had signed up for. The mud of this reality cracked and from within it like the molten core of the earth was swelling poured whiteness and light which transformed into the shape of sunshine assaulting the outsides of her eyelids through a window. The curtains were light and didn’t keep out the day much like the ones at home and the bed beneath her was far to comfortable, blankets on her bandaged body too warm.

Where was she. --And as if the gods had heard the question

“You're awake, welcome back to the Neutral Grounds. You are at the Inn.”

Well, that answered her question. The woman that walked in could have graced any guild billboard or Sorcerer’s Magazine cover, but she was better than those two dimensional photoshopped models. Somehow her imperfections made her perfect. There was a shyness to her, hesitation in her body movements and a softness in her voice. Her cream scrubs had a tailored look that was bold against her dark skin, but Famine could already see her in jeans and a t-shirt, feet up on the couch and painting her nails like any person. Just another person…. And to her, regardless of the insignia on the witch's lithe back Famine was just another person. Someone who’d needed aid when she had been found and however she’d found-- it was all still a mystery. Famine, who had been treated by the doctor . Thus,She’d respect the lives of the people here for that gesture.

And then, Famine rolled her dark eyes realizing she’d been paid. She read the strangers lips, they were a nurse from a local doctors office and had been treating them in the inn, paid by the same client who sent her up the mountain. The usb was gone along with all the records of the lab she had and instead a coin purse sat on the end table with a few roses….but, now where was Sol?  Her eyebrows furrowed and she glanced about the room attempting to locate any tell tale sign or the dark haired mage and her partner but it was just here and the nurse in the room. “I was with someone else, i went up on a mission into that damned lab but I lost track of him...I I have no idea how i’d made it outside, did you find anyone else?” The mage explained quietly, her voice hoarse.

No one had a clue, They’d only found her outside and Famine’s immediate thought was the worst possible outcome that he was dead, mangled, or worse-- and still in that lab. But she could still sense something when she thought of him, and felt that they would talk again… and that she’d just smack him upside the head, be mad, furious even that he would run off and leave her but like all arguments they’d settle over champagne and even a bondless tumble in the sheets..

Famine was free to go later that day and traveled back to the fort on mt hakobe. The money she’d made helped with the ticket back

The train was  late. Thus, Famine was left shivering on the platform with ten minutes of numbing quiet. Her head flickered to the right just as another stranger arrived at the station. There was the gentle clunk of a lipstick stained lid and her 6 am Earl Grey lands in the bin with the flick of her wrist. She looks like a Caroline. Long, soft curls and taupe boots. Famine picked at her braids , straightening out her dirty blonde hair. A rogue page of yesterday’s newspaper is chased by the wind like a pigeon with wings fluttering with feathers of rhetoric and melodrama.

The raucous, metallic shriek heralds the arrival of the decrepit carriage, standing in defiance of its condition - all corroded iron and tacky upholstery. The doors reluctantly eases open with the force of a stocky station guard, as if gripped by age, the handles stiff with arthritis. There is only one advantage of waking up at five thirty in the morning from the cacophonous chorus of squabbling birds and in a room she did not recognize. Famine was endowed with the generous elbow room and a guaranteed window seat all to herself Settling into her self-entitled throne, the guild master found the food she’d grabbed from the inn this morning and she unraveled a 470 calorie cream cheese and smoked salmon bagel, humble in its crumpled paper bag. Crumbs rain into the crevices of the grimy moquette fabric as she attempted to swallow the taste of regret. Should definitely have ordered that smoothie instead. The train takes a plunge, inching forward at an excruciating pace. It rocks back and forth, its relentless whining and groaning comparable to a resident of any nursing home. Saturated fat, carbs, cholesterol and hypertension - big words thrown around in last month’s Women’s Health article in sorcerer's magazine.

‘Health will be the bane of your existence if you miss out on this dieting tip!’

Famine tucked what was left of the the bagel back into its bag. The ebb and flow of movement brought her to the station. A blessing and a curse.

Once she got off the train she instantly resonated with the familiar chill that blasted through the small and rural station, she rolled her shoulders, wincing in pain still as she shifted in the bandages that wrapped her torso under her clothes. Once Famine was walking back through the settlements

The street looked like an unfinished painting. So much of the canvas was still perfectly white, as if waiting for the artists hand to return. The morning light struggled through the murky cloud, but even in its weakness it was enough to blind. The air was of course cold, but Famine hadn't expected the same dampness that comes before rain.

Breath pale against the numbing air, she blinked thoughtfully as the frost patiently kissed her face, captivated by the soft, dusty illusions of light that sat heavy on her eyelashes. She adored the snow, more so when it was falling on this mountain

And Famine walked in silence through the village High Street. They passed the greengrocer who struggled in the climate; window full premature plants in frozen soils, and the butcher with his bloody lumps of meat on display and naked chickens hanging up, and the small bank, and the grocery store and the weaponry shop, and then she  came out at the other side of the village on to the narrow mountain road where there were no people and miles of snow tread ahead of her..

The snow alighted on the witch’s  face softer than the kisses her mother used to plant, and just as cold as the memories had turned. In this swirl of white, the world was washed anew, like a new page, but she didn't want it. Under this pristine layer of crystalline water was the path she trod as a runaway when she first came up these hills, walking with her hands to herself, and her whole life behind her in Magnolia. She wanted to turn the pages back and dwell on the fine details: Her family; the crows feet around Mom’s eyes that deepened when she smiled, how she always wore Dad's rubber boots with four layers of socks rather than buy her own, how she never got too old to splash in the puddles. But life was pulling Famine forward into the unknown with one hand and erasing his past with the other. His thoughts were thicker than the blizzard, "She's gone, Everyone’s gone and who cares? The colors of spring will come but she won't." She turned around to see her bare footprints in the Ivory, she wasn't there anymore but they were. Famine figured when she got home she’d look for their footprints, their letters, their favorite novels, their recipe books….
