    Clover Town

    ________________________

A breeze carried Edge's red hair out behind her wildly as she stood on the front deck of a sailing ship,  watching her destination grow close in the distance ahead of them.   The Wet Wench,  the ship was called.   It wasn't one of hers,  but it was a common passenger ship taking people and cargo to the island of Clover.   She might have skipped the travel all together and arrive at the destination a ta moment's notice,  but that would have been boring.   She wanted to see what Clover was made up,  and part of that was witnessing the travel and port security herself.

Passengers moved about the deck unwitting to her presence.  Like a ghost she moved the about the ship unseen and unheard,  it required no effort on her part.   Keeping hidden among the average joe on an average ship,  when it didn't even matter if she was seen or not,  was as easy as breathing to her.   She stood right in front of a couple whispering sweet nothings,  oblivious to her presence.

She didn't care.   She didn't feel like being seen.   She was invisible,  with an illusiory mask of a red headed girl,  and shapechanged to the form of a brunet.  Really laying on the deception thick there,  as always.   She wasn't even here,  not truly,  She was in Ca-Elum at the moment looking through the private documents of one of that countries wealthiest merchant-lords.

Edge kept her gaze forward as they approached the island of Clover.

The island was large,  massive even.  Calling it an "Island" was almost a disservice as when one things of islands they tend to think of small landmasses or cast aways.  Clover Island was a massive island comparable to the massive "Lake" in which it resided.   The Clover Lake was similarly disproportionate,   as the "Lake Clover" was itself of incredible size,  as it was more akin to a sea and connected by two once again- Massive -rivers leading north and south connecting the seas on either side of the country through it's channels and breaking Fiore off from the rest of the continent.    Clover was in a remarkably strategic position as hundreds of ships sail these waters daily,  passing through the channels rather than sailing all around Fiore instead.

And the city of Clover exemplified that.   A trade hub itself,  Clover town was wealthy and it showed.   Two massive stone walls broke through the water from the port to stretch out like two open arm with two great statues standing on circular end points on either arm.   Ships sailing into port stopped at these two end points, reasonable distance between the two but not too much.  Room enough for two average ships to sail through side by side well enough.

Edge could see a large gate below the water,  most would miss it,  but Edge could make it out quite easily as her vision seemed to highlight it in her sight.    In times of threat the gate would no doubt rise to close the port off.

The Wet Wench stopped along side one of these arms and knights boarded the ship,  the captain going up to meet them.   Edge observed the proceedings.   The captain gave a cargo and passenger log to the soldiers while one man took the list and walked below deck to sign off on items and individuals on the list,  she could tell at first glance that the man was an Archive mage.  The patterns of magic the man emitted before her eyes telling her his secrets,  revealing his actions as he scanned everything in sight.

Edge could counter this sense,  but it was simplest to duck over the edge of the ship,  holding on casually to the side of the ship as easily as she could stand on the deck.  She didn't need to get back up just yet,  so she just shifted her perception to follow the man in his duties.    A good job,  quick,  thorough.   He only missed a few spots.   In five minutes,  the knights left the ship and the Wet Wench moved on to dock at a port.   A new set of Knights registered them a second time there,  logging everything and everyone that left the ship and what would go back onto it.

Edge was impressed.   Not just with the structure to be had here and the record keeping going on here.   But the City itself.

Past the two outstretched "arms" of the port was two large walls that came up further of a pale white stone etched with red trim and beyond that,  the docks she was now at.   The city itself was nestled in a valley between rolling hills,  hills that ended sharply in steep cliffs around the perimeter of the island,  with a small mountain chain in the center of the island.

The city was well kept.  Clean,  Pale stone and marble dominating the material usage for the buildings with well paved stone streets and water works.

The city snaked around following the valley,  bending out of sight even as it rose slightly as such that she could see the other side of the district.  The Port district,  this first bend was.    It was full of stone warehouses,  inns,  taverns,  and homes along with a fine shipyard.

Edge explored the city,  witnessing a calmness that was kept over the city.   The people were relaxed,  and peaceful.   Many people wore white clothing in various states,  most of them resembling robes... and togas,  it would seem.   She knew this was because the clothes were freely provided by the local guild here,  which took care of them.  Blue Pegasus.

There were many mages out and about through the town,  proudly baring their guild tattoo.   Most of them were weak mages,  but it was impressive none the less.

As she moved up through the city,  she could see an increase in cleanliness even from the already clean state of the first district.  The middle district was the Public District.   Many entertainment centers were here,  markets,  stalls,  public bathrooms,  parks,  benches...  and a large Colosseum.   She could hear a great crowd cheering from within it,   she imagined a significant portion of the town's population was there right now,  thus the reason the streets weren't as busy as they could have been.

At the end of this district before a third bend there was the Guild Hall for Blue Pegasus,  it was raised above everything else,  a very notable landmark easy to see along with the Colosseum.   It's white marble pillars surrounding the building very identifiable.    The raised land it stood on stretched outwards from the Hall's side with a number of other marble buildings and ending on a layered building that seemed to be built into the side of the hill with a number of gardens.  Edge knew what that was,  that was the Gardens,  linked with which being the bathhouse.

Run by Blue Pegasus but open to the public,  the Bathhouse saw a lot of use and was a significant reason to the happiness of the population here.   The reason everyone was healthy and clean.

Past the Guild Hall and into the next bend was the Noble district,  where the wealthy lived in large houses.   There was no single greatest noble house here,  as Clover was run by the Blue Pegasus guild.

Her quick tour of the city was over.  She'd seen it all now,  and now it was time to pay Blue Pegasus a visit and see what other fine establishments Clover had to offer to compare to the wonderful sights to be had.

Edge considered the crowd she had heard within the Colosseum,  and decided her best bet would be to explore that last.   Which might have seemed counterintuitive considering that's where most people were,  but that was exactly the reason she thought it would be best to do last.

She had hoped to explore the other attractions while they were not at their full capacity in order to get a better feel of the other locations.  It wouldn't be as pleasant if she had to wade through other people.   Not that she thought they would necessarily be that populated.  But she felt it was for the best to do things that way.

If she missed whatever was going on in the Colosseum,  then so be it.   But she doubted an apparently major event would pass by so easily.  She would just visit each establishment quickly,  not sticking around to fully enjoy them at first.   This was a self-guided tour,  not a vacation.   Not yet anyway.

She made her way up the marble steps of the Guild Hall towards the pillared building that served as the central building for the Blue Pegasus guild.  She had information on it already of course.  She knew what it was,  but she didn't know what it was like.

This was the building that Blue Pegasus used for meetings,  and it's where Guild Masters met.   It was also a library.  Unlike the library in Oak,  this library was less focused on magic and more focused on the History of Fiore and of Earthland.  It was one of the most complete collection of Historical books in Earthland,  Ranking fifth in the world.   Just as Oak's library was ranked third in the world for magical study.   This library didn't skimp on magical study by no means,  but it was significantly less.   Magical books usually made their way to Oak rather than Clover,  but Clover had a notable collection of originals as well as copies of others.

The Library of Magic often carried out disputes with Clover over ownership of various manuals and tombs,  disputes which now and then made it's way across her desk.   They were few and far in between however,  and not a concerning matter.

Edge passed unseen by the guards standing by.   She could see an invisible ward placed on the entry way that cataloged visitors.  That would be difficult to cross.  Even if she teleported,  it would detect  the movement.

    Well then.

Edge shifted her perception into the room beyond as though her mind was lifted and zoomed through the large doors.  Seeing the inside,  Silent Night visualized it.   In seconds,  Edge faded out of existence and was remade inside,  facing the door.   She observed it's magical trace...   Nothing.   She didn't trigger the automatic cataloging.

It was always something of a nuisance when she had to bother her true self like that.  When she had to literally cease to exist for a moment and rely on her... better half,  to set her back up.  Not that she minded,  Edge knew that since well,  they were the same person.   She had mixed feelings on the matter.

Inside the Guild Hall,  it was more magnificent than it was on the outside.   Immediately inside the building it was almost all one great room with emergency exists for inside to outside use only.   Large pillars lined the central part of the room,  each pillar with an ornate carved granite base before the marble pillars.   The granite bases were carved with depictions of heroics by certain guild members.  The walls themselves were carved similarly with the tales of many other heros just as great in their own rights,  but not as epic as those on the pillars.

On the far end of the hall was a single gold statue of a massive throne upon which a statued figure sat with symbols of authority in his hands.   Edge actually did not know who the person was.  She felt like she should know.   But she didn't particularly care to know at the moment.

There was a clerk on her side of the room,  several in fact.   It was an informational desk,  with a call system in place behind them.   People would ask questions about practically anything related to History and Blue Pegasus here and they would answer.   It was also where entrants were granted a book license to rent out books from the library,  or simple entry permits to more regulated areas of the library.

Anyone could get a Standard Card for free,  and it would allow them to enter the basic levels of the library to read copies of typical fantasy and educational books,  but not take them out of the library.   Other card levels were available for different things,  and there was a Pegasus Card free for members of Blue Pegasus which would issue them various accesses to the next level past Basic,  as well as to select Magic sections.

There were specialized cards for different areas as well as blanket access cards to whole sections,  with the best public cards allowing access to the Rare sections.   Apparently applicants to Rare sections needed a training class to handle the rare books before they could gain the license,  in addition to either paying well or having a Scholar status.

    Scholars.

Edge was aware of them.  They wore white robes and carried books.  They were in-house pursuers of higher education that stayed here to learn.   These were the people who wrote educational books on their studies and questioned the universe.

They were kind of like Wizards,  no not mages,  Wizards.  Old men and women who studied hard on the disciplines of magic as a form of art and learning to play with magic in a way as to invent new classifications for magic.  Learn how and why it works,  and how to create entirely new magics.

    Like wizards,  but less fun.

There were one or two wizards here as well,  studying along with the scholars in the magic section.   But most Wizards were drawn to the Library of Magic rather than this place.  Most Wizard patrons were only temporary,  coming to learn from history and the limited selection of magical text that the library here had that the Library of Magic did not.

Even then,  Wizards tended to isolate themselves with their choice texts and build up their own "Wizard Tower".

Edge explored the library further,  viewing all said sections.   Seeing the Call system in action where a scholars who worked in managing the library would retrieve the book and place it in little book elevators for the desk to hand out.

There were quiet study rooms where scholars would sit in divided desks all with their own lighting and tools for the careful examination of the old books as though they were diffusing a bomb.

She also observed the security here.  Scholars on every level,  who served as janitors,  managers, and help people when they weren't studying or in their off time,  helped keep watch over everything.   There was also always members of Blue Pegasus in the library doing their own things,  who would surely rush to any danger or threatening figures.   Assuming they ever got into the building in the first place.

She could see the lines of magic along each shelf,  which were disrupted when a book was taken from the shelf.  She could read the magic and knew that it was another catalog system that kept track of books.   When the book was taken a tendril of magic connected the book to the shelf...  She saw this in action,   when a young man left a book on a desk as he left the building.

As soon as the man exited through the cataloging at the door,  the book glided gracefully back to it's place on the shelf.    Meanwhile in lower levels the security was tighter,  and some books could not be moved at all or when moved triggered an alarm,   others prevented the book from leaving a certain distance.

Some whole sections had alarms on them and denials of entry.

Interesting.  And somewhat boring.   Edge should get a few Scatterthoughts to study here.

Other rooms were less interesting.   Rooms here could be rented out for meetings to be held. In many of these such rooms there were Scholars who were teaching groups of children numbering up to forty at a time. Some glasses held older audiences, but it was clear that it was being used as a school where the scholars taught the young and old of Clover Town.

Satisfied and impressed with the Guild Hall,  Edge left the building.
