An anonymous tip, huh? Aven had always been a rather trusting individual, to say the least. More often than not, he'd give even a hardened criminal a chance to explain their motives, and he'd listen wholeheartedly. Recently, however, with the return of his memories, a hint of suspicion had crept into his everyday interactions; he found himself doubting the occasional, 'Nice talking to you', or questioning the text of a job board mission. It was a hard reality to face, that he couldn't simply trust others at their word as others could him, but facing it he was, slowly and surely.

This mission was no different. He'd overheard a rowdy group of men discussing a 'job' in River Village, and one of them had mentioned 'The Major' in an invariably gruesome anecdote. Aven could have confronted them at the time, but in a crowded Tavern, if his suspicions had been correct, the supposed Dark Wizards could have taken any number of hostages, and collateral damage was not an acceptable outcome for Aven. Instead, he'd contacted his Mother, and confirmed through her Military contacts that a Major in the Rune Knights was, indeed, visiting River Village later that week. It was all merely a matter of preparation, at that point, for him to be there when the Major arrived. More likely than not, the man was visiting a relative or something similar, and the Dark Wizards would strike when his guard was down. No guarantee that the Major couldn't handle his own, of course, but from Aven's perspective, erring on the side of caution was a much smarter play in this instance.

Aven lounged lightly on a bench near the edge of the village, his silky white suit waving softly every time the breeze passed by. He waved kindly to the villagers on their daily commutes, even having a few idle conversations. Despite outward appearances, however, Aven was on guard: there was something off about how he'd learned this information. Dark Wizards could be careless, just like anyone, but their wanton racket in the Tavern gave Aven the sneaking suspicion that they'd wanted to be heard. Perhaps, they were trying to score some points by catching a few Guild Wizards in the pot. If that was the case, they'd made a terrible mistake by offering Aven Alveron an invite to the party.

It was midday, by this point, when Aven spotted a woman idling about. She seemed young, a tussle of vibrant purple hair, and cool, blue eyes that shimmered like the ocean. There was a nervous shift in her stance, one he'd expect of someone who was expecting company, and not the good kind. He waved over to her. "Excuse me, Miss, you seem to be troubled. Is there something bothering you?" He smiled warmly, a default for the young man.

She had arrived with rare punctuality, and pulled more than enough strings to get to River Village, trusting rather wholeheartedly that her friend would return the favor and pick her up. But when five minutes turned into thirty; the unsettling suspicion of her disappearance worried her. She voiced her displeasure with her arms crossed over her chest: “She had better have a good excuse for bailing on me like that." She took this moment to release a heavy sigh. "I won’t settle for anything less than world domination and a place for me on the throne."

But Vera was incapable of holding a grudge against the poor woman for very long; and though she had every reason of her own to stay mad at her, she could not dwell on the feeling knowing that her friend was afraid of something. She had relayed her paranoia to Vera, the unfortunate receiver of such cryptic news, and extended an invite to her as a family friend. Her pal already established to having desired her company, and Vera wouldn't disappoint. She knew exactly where to go, she had all the power in her legs to walk to her, and nothing would get in the way of that. The noble fool would come to her instead.

Before she could leave her spot, she acknowledged the voice of the other with a dubious look, and was locked in conversation. Without thinking inappropriately of his appearance, Vera had always been aware of physical aesthetic in a way not dependent on sexual attraction; he gave her the impression of being immaculate and fashionable. He also seemed kindly in the way he expressed his concern.   “Am I really that obvious?” She laughed, giving way to a less than ladylike shrug. “A relative of a close friend is visiting today. Exciting, right? Only problem is,” she smiled wryly, “she didn't sound all that excited to begin with. In fact, she seemed pretty spooked about the whole thing."

He looked more ready for the reunion than she did. Jean shorts and a black tee shirt didn't exactly spell elegant. "Is your day any better than mine," she inquired, "or am I just lucky?"

Aven sat forward on the bench as the young woman spoke, resting his arms casually on his legs. He laughed brightly as she answered with a question of her own. "Either that, or I must be an incredible judge of posture!" He punctuated the comment with a wink. As a matter of fact, during his youth, he'd been instructed rigorously in the art of pomp and circumstance, and with it, the art of body language. It wasn't exactly his Modus Operandi, but bits and pieces of the lessons had stuck with him: one such lesson was on the social meanings of posture, and what differents ways of holding oneself convey to others. The young woman's stance just a moment ago had reminded him of the quintessential example of anxious body language, the telltale sign of someone who's gotten into their own head, as it were. He'd been taught to suppress the natural urge to shift in place when nervous, and keep his eyes' movements slow and deliberate, to avoid giving himself away and lessening his social power in any given situation. When Aven did employ those tactics, they were more or less instinctual, rather than on purpose, and he rarely thought twice about them.

The young woman continued, and, to his delight, Aven's intuition had been spot on, with a small, added bonus: it sounded to Aven as though she'd some connection to the Major. That would make things much easier, especially if she'd be able to introduce him afterwards. His current plan was to ensure the safety of the villagers and Major, then of the Village itself, and with luck, he'd be permitted to accompany the Major for additional protection on their return trip, in case there were any additional attempts on their life. That, in case something actually happened in the first place, as he was still wholly unsure there would be an attack in the first place. Best case scenario, his fears were unfounded, and the trip would have been a simple trip to a quaint little village.

Once again, the young woman pushed the conversation back into his court. "It sounds to me that it may be neither, if I'm honest. Would you like to sit?" As a measure of courtesy, he scooted to the left side of the bench, gesturing for her to sit. After all, it would be rude to not offer a seat to a lady. "I'm a Fairy Tail Wizard, Aven Alveron, at your service." He gave her a small proper nod, the equivalent of a bow when one was reclined, and tilted his left hand, which was resting on the bench armrest, to show her the bright, teal Fairy Tail Guild mark on the back. "I came here on suspicion of an attempt on a visiting Rune Knight's life, a Major in the force. Seems, I'm not the only one with apprehensions about today."

Above anything else, it wasn't his intention to cause panic or distress, and to that note, Aven quickly followed his statement up with a winning smile. "There's no need to worry, though, believe me: I'm more than capable of handling a few would-be assassins, provided I can get close enough to the Major to protect them." Finishing his sentence abruptly, an idea popped into his head. "Say, your friend's relative wouldn't happen to be the Major, would it? If so, it would be an incredible help if you could introduce me! From what I hear, the higher ups of the Rune Knights travel with escort, so, even as a Fairy Tail Wizard, it would be difficult for me to get close enough to the Major to protect them from a potent magical attack. My shielding magic is almost strictly touch-cast, you see."

Vera was engaged to meet with her missing companion and even then she was considerate enough as to briefly accompany the much younger man. She took an opportunity of remaining silent and simply listening. “Oh, yeah. Totally spot on.” Said she, quite agreeably, concerning his keen perception of character. She had been watching him from the corner of her eye, and just the same stayed the smile on her face. The possibility of straying away from the fellow had once occurred to Vera within the last minute or so; but that she could politely do so was improbable, and her mind raced back to the Major’s daughter. Then back to the posh stranger.

The relaxed, ivory countenance which he had readied in offering her a seat, caused her to presume he was oblivious to her dilemma; though, if only she had more time to spare, then she would not have minded socializing with the fellow for a good while more. Needless to say, the figurative clock lodged in her brain was ticking the minutes of her day away, to dilly dally any longer would set her plans back even further and such odds were unfavorable in the eyes of the author. She knew that much.

An awkward little sound escaped her lips before she could quickly negate the offer without sounding too rude; such a sound rejection never came, however, for the thoughtful introduction caught her attention with nearly no effort and still quite mannerly to her ears. Her expression should have been tranquil because of the valiant reveal, but she seemed a touch guarded and wouldn’t soften her gaze until he provided tangible evidence of his loyalty to the guild, this Fairy Tail  he so graciously served.

She was usually comfortable with both categories of mages: rogue and affiliated. What never  sat well with her were those pretending to be something they weren’t. The tattoo he presented to her sufficed, and she was ideally satisfied with the proof. She would happily introduce herself, and would do so with the most absolute grace and poise.  "I'm Vera Walden, and have survived as a living organism on this planet until present day. I'm kind of a wonder." The last sentence rolled out rather dryly for her, despite the rather upbeat introduction. She settled within a friendly, comfortable distance from him while she sat.

Aven was very clear-cut about his intentions for being here; so she had made it very transparent enough to convey the message that he had earned her trust in the way she seemed to relax. "Consider me your one way ticket to the good Major. Now that you're my plus one, we're going to have to do some serious walking. Cool? Unless you've got a lacrimobile parked somewhere which I'm hoping could be the case. That'd be convenient." She said, but as if overheard by some higher being, one zoomed for them and stopped abruptly before the two. It was her friend, looking just downright extraordinary and ready to mingle.

"Hey, Sue, you're only extremely late. But don't worry, I made use of the time and reeled in an old friend. Mind this, you don't." She asserted with a sharp look, before entering the car with a smile greater than the one she had previously. They would reach their destination shortly.
