…what had happened here? Yuzuki slowly let herself fall to the ground, landing on one knee as she observed her surroundings. The town was desolate, barren, as though some great force had plowed through and consumed any vestige of life that might have existed otherwise. As a gentle breeze coasted through the dust-laden air, the semi-fey flinched, feeling a strange foreign sensation in the toxic wind. She was in a dangerous place – that much was evident. Tugging a ratty old scarf out of her equally worn-out backpack, Yuzuki wrapped it tightly around her face. Stretching her mind out, the semi-fey desperately searched for some sign of life. But besides the low stirring of bacteria, there was nothing. Not a single rustle of grass, not a single chirp of birds.

Where had she ended up this time, and how had she never found this place before? Yuzuki slowly pushed herself up to her feet, and looked around, all senses on alert. Although she could sense no life about her, she knew from experience that it was often the non-living menaces that were most deadly. Without a life force to worry about, such monstrosities had less at stake and were dreadful opponents. Yet, despite her body screaming to get out of there, Yuzuki heeded it not. Instead, she threw up an invisible coat of magical armor around herself, protecting her body from the toxic chemical residue that seemed to be all that existed here. With the necessary equipment, she could now continue her investigation safely.

The air was thick with dust, and even with the protection of her magic, Yuzuki found herself instinctively squinting to avoid the sharp sting of the particles. The buildings appeared to have once been of high quality, strong brick walls rising up to meet the sky. Yet none of their former majesty remained, replaced by porous markings that riddled the material like a plague.

The semi-fey shuddered, and rubbed her shoulders in discomfort. Feeling oddly alone all of a sudden, she raised her voice, trying to ensure it didn’t shake – “Hello? Is anyone out there?” The query echoed across the buildings, and a frown crossed her face as she realized the idiocy of what she had done. “Goddamn wasteland…”

A city that has been erased from Fiore’s map in the past. That is what the girl was told. She’s been all around the nation lately, familiarizing herself with it. Only made sense, as she would be spending a good amount of time here. But this was certainly one of the most unique places she had visited yet. Allegedly destroyed by a dark guild in the past, though she could not verify this information. But how it came to be mattered little to the yōkai. What it was right now - that interested her much more. For something great could come from this place. She merely had to exploit it.

The automatically acting necrotic barrier around her body shielded her as the cat moved through the abandoned streets, looking rather out of place with her attire. But she could not care less for such things. She’s been here for a while already, collecting samples and dealing with the occasional bandit trying to ambush her. But this time, something different had caught her attention. Between the buildings, a much more feminine voice. The transformation was immediate, only a black cat with a small red bow and golden eyes hopping across the rubble until it could see.

A girl? A sight that surprised her more than anything in this place. And admittedly, it made her curious. So much so that she decided to approach, in her own way. “Of course there is. Plenty of spirits still trapped within these crumbling walls. But what brings You here?” The voice was sweet and gentle, yet sinister at the same time as it seemed to echo from all around, it’s source hard to pin down. The idea of playing with this freshly arrived specimen was rather alluring to the bakeneko, but she also didn’t want to waste all of her time here.

And so, whenever this girl would show her back to Kuro, she would turn into her humanoid form and reveal herself, an inviting smile adorning her expression, along with those crimson eyes that reflected everything she could see, like a surface of the stillest sea. “You have chosen a dangerous place to be. Especially as the night draws near. This place must be more dangerous than most during Ōmagatoki.” She twirled the parasol in her hand as she spoke, standing completely still and calm even if her new friend here would not be able to remain as such herself. This was very interesting.

Yuzuki whirled around, startled by the voice that suddenly rang out about her, echoing on the crumbling walls of the establishments. Her eyes darted about, not unlike those of cornered prey, before landing upon a small, lithe figure that balanced with ease on the rubble. A talking cat? Well, this was Fiore. That wasn’t much to be surprised by. No – what unnerved the semi-fey was that she had never heard the creature approach. The woman prided herself on her excellent senses, capable of detecting almost everything around her. But the feline had seemingly appeared out of nowhere, interrupting the eerie silence with a voice that didn’t match its owner.

“Spirits ain’t nobody,” she muttered, her body sliding automatically into a fight or flight stance, ready to react in an instant if the kitty cat tried anything. While this newcomer’s voice gave off a sweet and gentle lilt, it perfectly served its purpose of unnerving the semi-fey. And she absolutely despised the feeling she now felt – the sense of being some sort of plaything for a bored predator.

Yet before she could say anything else, the feline would turn around, transforming into a humanoid girl with an equally disturbing expression upon her face. Smiles spelled danger to Yuzuki, who had discovered that pleasure rarely meant a good end for her in this unpleasant world.

“No shit Sherlock, anyone with a brain could tell that much.”
The woman snorted at the yokai’s warning, although her eyes betrayed a feral wariness at the girl’s presence. “Besides, I think it would make more sense for me to be the one askin’ why you’re here. S’not like you fit in exactly. Wouldn’t be surprised if yer one of them damn spirits you were talkin’ about yerself.” And truly, this stranger’s very presence seemed out of place in such a barren place. While Yuzuki’s well-worn cloak and lean muscles matched her somewhat to the environment, the cat-girl’s graceful, delicate movements were about as natural to Morgate Town as a teacup to a volcano. Yet, at the same time, the semi-fey couldn’t help but feel a gentle wash of relief from meeting some other form of sentience in this ghost town. Even if it was an unnerving shapeshifter of a girl.

“Frankly, I’m surprised ya even responded. Nobody reasonable would be caught dead in a place like this, yeah?” The semi-fey chuckled dryly. “Then again, reason’s never suited me much anyway.” Certainly, Yuzuki was on-edge. Finding herself attempting to make conversation with a potentially dangerous stranger was definitely not something she would normally do. It was something about the place – Morgate Town could shake anybody’s nerves.

This girl’s first verbal response was a rather amusing one, especially to a yōkai. If not for her truly feline form, she would have laughed at it, even. For spirits, in fact, were very real. Sometimes even more so than the living. However, it seemed that the thought was put aside quickly, Kurome’s humanoid form taking a whole lot more attention from whoever she attempted to talk to. “Must I fit these crumbling walls to gain the right to walk these broken stones? I am simply someone who strives to look her best regardless of how compelling the world around me becomes.

A quick glance at Yuzuki betrayed a hint of discontent in the cat’s eyes. “It is always disappointing to see someone wearing rags and even having a foul mouth unfitting a true lady.” But lecturing some other lass about the importance of fashion was not why she chose to approach. Instead, she merely chuckled when she was asserted amid the souls that wandered this place. “Have peace of mind, I am not bound to this place as a spirit. Alas, I cannot talk on behalf of anyone else you might have the pleasure of meeting here.

Suddenly taking a few steps to the side, it was almost as if Kuro dropped all of her guard intentionally, her eyes suddenly focused on a large pile of rubble next to her. Using one of her long and slender fingers to trace over the rough surface and split apart the layer of dust and dirt which lied on top, she sighed. It was true that if it was up to her, she would have chosen a much more pleasant place for a chat than this. “Perhaps I am not reasonable then. Who even is these days?

Suddenly, she would turn toward Yuziki and very slowly start taking firm and decisive steps toward her, that same small still creepily hanging on her face. “But you’ve not answered my question, have you? Why are you here? It’s rude to avoid responding, or attempt to answer question with a question. And while we’re at it, I wouldn’t mind knowing what name to associate with such an adorable face as is yours. You may call me Kurome, if you so please~” Her voice was sweet, as if it was pure honey itself. Demanding, seductive… her very presence was trying to press up against Yuzuki to coerce her into talking.

Yuzuki bristled at the stranger’s words of contempt for her ragged clothing, finding insult at her lecturing tone. Being the very image of rebellion, the semi-fey found she had to physically inhale and exhale with quite some force to keep herself from leaping at the taunting woman. Yet, despite the mage’s efforts, she was unable to keep herself from muttering an angry “Fine lady, my ass.” Finding the whole conversation wholly unproductive at this point, Yuzuki would begin to plan for a way out of the situation, ready to move on to the next city or forest, having found nothing of interest here. However, the feline lady would continue to speak, forcing the semi-fey to keep listening.

Silver eyes cautiously tracked the other’s movement to the side, focusing on her fingers as they traced over a nearby pile of rubble. Yuzuki’s ears twitched imperceptibly at the small sigh the stranger exhaled after a moment of thought, her senses all on edge. Of course, Miss Kitty wasn’t a reasonable person – that much had been easy to gather. And that meant that she had to take extra care when taking her leave. Who knew how the feline would react if Yuzuki decided she’d had enough? Even as the thought slipped through the semi-fey’s mind, Miss Kitty would begin to walk steadily toward her, each step strong and decisive. With every advancement, Yuzuki would begin to slide backwards diagonally, aiming for an opening between two of the crumbling houses. She didn’t like the look on this woman’s face – not at all.

“Why I’m here? Aha…” Never taking her eyes away from the now-named Kurome, the semi-fey continued to slide away from her approach. “I’m sure it ain’t gon interest ya,” she muttered, mind whirring to come up with a way to escape. Perhaps she could utilize the wall to lift off, and latch onto the window of that higher building to the right…afterwards, though…that was a dead end.

“Ah’ve simply been looking for a certain fungus, y’know, said to grow only in barren areas with little other life,” she began, thinking of one of the job forms she’d seen at the guild. While it certainly wasn’t what she was here for, perhaps it was a piece of information she could use to temporarily distract the raven-haired stranger. “Man, y’wanna know my name too? Jeez, ya plannin’ on making a friend or something?” Wrinkling her face briefly, the semi-fey leapt up onto the roof of the closest house, having found few other alternatives. Peering down below at Kurome, she sighed, keeping a hand on the smooth silver handle of her spear.

“You can call me Zhuu, I s’pose. It’s as much my name as any. Now if you’ll ‘scuse me, I’ll be right on my way.” Glancing back warily, Yuzuki would attempt to execute an escape, crawling back slowly in case the feline made any sudden movements.

There was no reason to stop or even slow down. Her pray was near cornered, her movements betraying the obvious desire to escape from this situation as quickly as she possibly could. There was not a shred of intent to fight back. And while that made it a tad bit less fun in some ways, it also pleased Kurome. It affirmed her own power and charisma, the fact that she was successfully driving someone into a corner. At least to some degree. Naturally, she had no actual expectations for this to go as smoothly as it was going now all the way till the end.

Still, she had to enjoy this while it lasted. Moving one of her clawed hands to her mouth, she would lick her lips as if the juiciest morsel imaginable rested in front of her, the crimson gaze of hers piercing her pray without mercy. “Of course. I’m very much looking forward to us becoming very, very good friends~” Even completely disregarding the lie about fungus, the yōkai already knew this semi-fey was here for no such thing. After all, there was no such thing in this place. She explored the ruined city thoroughly by now.

Only when Yuzuki actually decided to start her escape did Kuro’s decisive steps come to a sudden halt. But her gaze was not separated from the other girl for one second. And the smile spread across her face did not fade. Nay, it grew. Because while her prey felt comfortable enough to start talking the moment she gained high ground, the cat had little interest in keeping it that way. In a moment’s notice, her feet would be planted on a nearby wall of a building, her nimble nature allowing her to almost run up the completely vertical surface before jumping off and landing right on that same roof.

Did the semi-fey perhaps forget she was talking to a cat? Her body might have been more fragile than most, but she fas far more nimble than most other creatures could ever hope to be. And she was fast, how else could she ever catch herself a tasty morsel like this? But before either of the girls could make any further movement, the entire roof shock as something else started climbing it. Not even a second later, several hair-covered thin legs started peering from beyond one of the ledges.

Precisely eight legs that were quickly followed by a bulbous a bloated body of a giant spider, one that was at least good 3 or 4 meters across. If some people found these creatures disgusting under normal circumstances, then this would be a waking nightmare. Its numerous eyes stalked the two girls as a sickly green liquid dripped from its belly, the bloated parts of its skin practically bubbling with this strange and definitely toxic waste. “How curious. Did it mutate as a result of the biological attack on this city?” It seemed that the cat didn’t feel particularly threatened by the monster.
