Cassiopeia Gojira was in high spirits today, she had completed the task placed upon her by the Dies Irae Guild Master Johann and been promoted to a C-Rank Mage for it. She had traveled to the town of Cedar in Fiore in search of a serial killer, and dispatched swift justice in the name of the guild. The madman James the Shredder was dead by her hand, a blast of atomic fire boring out his heart, a death too clean for the likes of his kind. Even the man's life was unsuitable payment for the lives he had destroyed, and the sorrow he had caused. But alas, it was the greatest toll Cassiopeia could level out of the madman, and the Knights of Cedar were ever grateful for her assistance. None mourned the death of a man who dedicated his life to preying on the innocent.

Her return to Dies Irae had been a triumphant one, and her promotion had come swiftly upon informing the Guild Masters of the good news. Cassiopeia didn't feel any stronger for it, titles were just words to her. But... important words all the same, C-Rank was still a small fish in a very large pond, but it would open new doors for the Kaijin. Ranks and titles were but a means to an end in her boundless pursuit of power. Ones Cassiopeia was already eager to put to good use.

The towering Kaijin woman rose from her bed, enjoying the first good night's sleep in a bed that was her own in what felt like ages. She'd predominantly been traveling across the whole of Fiore this past few weeks, and it was good to finally be someplace family. Her room still didn't feel like 'her room', more like... the place she kept all her things when she traveled. Regardless, it was the closest thing Cassiopeia had had to a home in years, and she was learning to cherish it all the same. She had put in a request with the Guild Quartermaster for a larger bed, and her cramp double was now a much more spacious queen size. She needed every bit of it, between her considerable height and the enormity of her tail.

Yawning and stretching her arms over her head, the Kaijin shook the sleep from her body. She hopped to her feet, clad only in a loose, flowing black nightgown that stretched down to mid thigh. Cassiopeia lazed about her room for a minute, still half asleep as she collected her things and departed for the bathroom. As low ranking as she was, sadly her dormitory didn't include a private restroom, and she was forced to share a common bathroom with the other low ranking female mages of Dies Irae. As the only one who left shedding scales in the shower, Cassiopeia was especially self conscious of herself as she groomed for the day ahead.

She returned to her bedroom an hour later, washed, groomed, and ready to greet the day proper. Donning her guild approved outfit, Cassiopeia slipped into one of her retailored regal black dresses. Since joining Dies Irae she had been asked to wear a guild appropriate uniform, one that flew their colors and donned their more militaristic styling. She didn't mind much, black was her favored color anyways, and the addition of crimson accents to her dress complimented her orange eyes. She looked as ravishing as ever, inspecting herself in a full body length mirror with a confident smile.

Pleased in her appearance, Cassiopeia departed from her bedroom and made for a beeline to the Throne Hall's spacious dining hall. The Kaijin's appetite was ravenous, though she was in little mood to sit and chit chat while enjoying a lengthy breakfast. She ate hurriedly, eager to get back into the fray and take on more work. With several large muffins in hand, Cassiopeia finished her meal and headed back to the main hall of the administrative building. She sought out the Guild's Job Board, idly munching on a blueberry muffin as she browsed over the flyers and potential Jobs eagerly looking for one to undertake.

"Hmm... Decisions, decisions..." Cassiopeia mused to herself, taking a large bite of her muffin and chewing slowly as she skimmed over the new C-Rank Jobs she could potentially carry out herself. Nothing particular caught her eye though, she was craving action, adventure, the thrill of battle. Too many of her D-Rank endeavors had been little more than menial labor, running errands, or other lowly tasks barely fit for a mage... much less one of her caliber. What she desired now was something to get the blood flowing.

It was still dark when Gangting woke. He was laying in his small room within the guild building of Dies Irae. The room was on the ground level, which was fortunate for the big redhaired mage. He had taken the liberty to place his bed, which was barely large enough for him, against the wall and made a larger bed out of stone. He laid one stone just as well as on a mattress straw and feathers, the stone would morph to his body through his earth slayer magic. Gangting threw his sheet off him and stood up. He moved his hand through his hair and let out a lowed yawn. He removed the bandages on his chest and left leg and added special ointments to the venomous cut that festered on his chest. A medicinal herb, socked in some kind of oil, was added on his burned left leg. Both wounds were wrapped tightly with fresh linen bandages. He donned himself brown pants of heavy linen and buckled his sword to his belt. He picked up his stone vambraces from his table and left the room.

He went to the refractory of the guild but as he had expected none was there, nor any food yet. He walked to the kitchen and found himself a banquet and a big chunk of cheese. Those would suffice as his breakfast which he ate as he moved towards the training facilities of the guild. Gangting was usually one of the first to wake.  The slayer has been training every day in the yard since joined Dies Irae on the request of his old friend, who was one of the guilds ambassadors. Johann and he had a long history and they had found each other unexpectedly in the far North of Fiore on the border with Seven. Gangting was set upon by bandits when he was on his march back to Fiore from Duoshang. he was heavily wounded and that was something the bandits had noticed, but even a wounded Earth Demon Slayer is more than mere mortals can deal with. Gangting had dealt with them swiftly but a handful ran away, into the hands of none other than Johann von Weiss. The rest is history, but it was an odd place for a reunion.

The sun just kissed the horizon as he entered the training area. It was his custom to practice with the sword in the morning, followed with a run and later in the morning with his slayer magic. But today he wasn’t going to train with his magic, he had a different plan in mind. He practised on his own dummies made of stone, his broad bronze sword was harder and sharper as any normal bronze sword and even those of steel. His sword, called Emo Shashou : Demon Slayer, was taken from a tomb of an ancient emperor of long-forgotten empire. It was a magical sword, blessed by the gods themselves, it could cut into stone without a scratch or dull the blade. Gangting had never sharpened it in his life.

Gangting took a shower, such a device was still new to him, but he started to get the hang of it. He never knew there was a temperature valve the first week he used it and it had been a surprise what temperature the water would every day. He preferred to shower with cold water now that he knew how to operate it. He replaced his bandages again after the shower and started to dress according to the rules of his guild. He wasn’t happy with that part, he had to wear a uniform and he hated it. Normally he only wore a thick bronze chest and backplate, with a skirt of bronze plates and crimson linen. His shoulders would be adorned with his heavy crimson cloak trimmed with golden fur. The uniform he wore was black and crimson, but he left out the boots as he never wore footwear. The uniform was actually a bit too small for him, but they didn’t have his size. Johann promised him that they would get some larger ones made for him but that took awfully long, Johann seemed to find it rather amusing he thought. Gangting donned his bronze armour over his uniform, it was an odd sight to see he didn’t care. His armour has saved his life occasionally during his fights in the past. He took his heavy cloak from a peg on the door and grabbed his travelling bag. He left his room and went to seek the job board.

Gangting looked surprised when he found a tall woman standing in front of the board. She was almost a foot taller than he was. He was more surprised to find someone who was taller than he was, especially by that much, that he didn’t even notice that she sported a giant reptilian tail. He slowly approaches and then noticed the tail. Dragon, wondered Gangting in his thoughts. He took a deep sniff, no, not exactly like dragon. Bellow her flowing sable hair were ‘things’ sticking from her back, unlike anything Gangting had seen in his life. ”A jolly good morning,” spoke Gangting louder and sterner as he would have wanted, he was too focused on figuring out what she was and if she was to be trusted. You never knew it with dragons, Gangting still held some grudges to some of their individuals but I resulted in distrust for all. ”I have not seen you here before,” continued Gangting less loud and friendlier than before. He even produced a genuine smile upon his, with red hair framed, face.

Cassiopeia had finished one of her remaining muffins as she mused at the job board in greater detail, narrowing down her selection. "Maybe the one in Minstrel? It's the closest by far..." She mused to herself, rubbing at her delicate chin with her now free hand. She let out a sigh, choosing a job always proved to be the most difficult part it seemed. So much to do, so little time to do it. Her attention was briefly pulled away by the sound of heavy footsteps on the marble, carpeted floors behind her. Her tail slapped against the ground in unspoken agitation, and she raised an eyebrow as she heard him sniff at the hair.

When the man spoke, Cassiopeia turned to face the stranger, finding a towering brute of a man, not far off from what she expected. A pillar of muscle and armor, with thick powerful arms and a broad, barrel chest. He had a beard of ruby hair that maned his face like a lion's, giving him a kind of bestial look. To Cassiopeia's surprise though the man was exceptionally tall, for a human. He was notably closer to her height than anyone she'd laid eyes on since joining Dies Irae, friend or foe. Cassiopeia cracked a wry smile, folding her arms crossed beneath her massive bust. "Well said stranger, indeed it is." She said coyly in reply.

"Breakfast?" She asked sweetly, as Cassiopeia tossed one of her two remaining muffins into the air for the man to catch. She used the brief distraction to scan his visible body for his Guild Tattoo, unable to locate before his gaze returned to hers. It must have been located somewhere under that ensemble of armor and cloak he was wearing. The woman's eyes narrowed, and she met the stranger eye to eye. "Don't think I didn't hear you smell me, Stranger." She said as the woman leaned in close to the warrior, near enough he could feel the heat that radiated off of her. "Do you enjoy the perfume? It's Fioren, made with lavender; I picked up a bottle when I was through with my Guild Exam..." The power of her Flame God Slayer Magic was already coming in handy, a week ago and her hearing would never have been acute enough to hear the stranger's sniff.

"You haven't seen me around here before..." Cassiopeia said, slowly sashaying her way around the warrior, one hand on her wide hips as the other lifted a muffin to her mouth to chomp on a bite. "...Because I've hardly been here before." She finished her sentence as she swallowed, currently admiring the man's backside. Cassiopeia lifted her tail, the tip pointed to the man's face to display her Guild Tattoo etched on it's tip in a bright crimson ink. "I've only just joined a few weeks ago, and I've spent most of that time away on Jobs." By now she'd circled back around to the warrior's front side, grabbing the end of her own tail as it was lazily coiled around the man.

Cassiopeia let go of her favored appendage after a moment, and it slunk around the warrior's backside as it returned to a resting position. "Allow me to introduce myself then. I am Cassiopeia Gojira, Neophyte of Dies Irae, and a Kaijin of Kaijū-jima. Now... if you would do me the honor of introducing yourself stranger? I can't say I've met a man of your statue since I joined." Cassiopeia smiled warmly, revealing her pearly white, fanged teeth. She was eager to learn more about this stranger and guild mate, and even more eager to learn what kind of abilities he possessed.

Breakfast? thought Gangting confused and before he knew the tall woman threw one of her cupcakes in the air. He briefly looked up and held his right hand out open. He moved his gaze back at her as the cupcake fell into his large hand. ”Thank you?” Said Gangting perplexed. Deep amber coloured eyes peered at him behind squinted eyelids. The woman leaned in towards him; he felt a heat gleaming on his face, it came from her person. ”It’s a habit,” he sounded sincere, ”sometimes a smell can tell an unspoken story.” He held up both his hand, his left open and his right enclosed around the muffin and raised his shoulders. ”Yes, a lovely smell, lied the redhaired warrior, his focus on smelling whenever she was a dragon or not had drowned out all other smells, ”but I also smelled something else, something alike to dragon but near close enough. Are you related to them?”

The reptilian-tailed woman leisurely strolled around him as she talked. Gangting’s head curiously followed her graceful movement but he stayed at his place. She swept her tail up towards his face, upon the tip was the guild’s sigil in sanguine. She had finished her circle and held her tail around him as if to keep him restraint.  ”I see,” he nodded amiably, ”not the one to stay inside.” He despises slackers. He was raised in a small village where life was hard and everyone had to do his or her best so that everyone had enough food, slackers could endanger their survival of all, and they profited from sitting on their arses. If a new one to the guild was so invested in taking jobs, then it was a good sign of a harder worker. Which somewhat repentant about his own course in the guild so far, but that was about to change. He was here, after all, to look for a job.

Her tail unwrapped itself around him, Gangting’s gaze followed it until it left his field of view and turned his eyes back to the ambers of the woman before her. What a pretty colour, he thought. Yellows, orange and brown hues were his favourite colours, it was the colours of the rocks from where he grew up. ”Well met my lady Cassiopeia.” He nodded stiffly with his head. He noticed her beast-like fangs and looked at them in awe. The redhead straightens his back and broadens his shoulders. ”Do you want the short version or the long?” His mouth curled up in a grin and continued, before giving her a chance to answer, ”I am Gangting of Duoshang. I have also recently joined the guild, probably after you which is why we haven’t met before.” He had choices the short version of his name and pronounced his name with pride. Whenever he mentioned Duoshang, his fond memories returned, but always followed with an aftertaste of sorrow. His eyes stopped smiling for a brief moment as he felt the misery.

"You're welcome darling." Cassiopeia said in response as Gangting grabbed her gift. He looked a bit confused by the gesture, but no matter. It had given her time to study him more closely, which was all it was intended to. She smirked, suppressing a scoff at the admission him smelling others was a habit. "I agree with you on that. Smell can tell a lot, and you smell of stone, sweat, and salve." She gave her words pause so they would properly sink in. "Hiding some injuries under that armor of yours Stranger? I hope you didn't bite off more than you could chew on your last job." She feigned innocence, in truth her playful mockery was an attempt coax the rank of her guild mate out of him indirectly.

Cassiopeia beamed with pride when the warrior complimented her smell, "I go to great effort to be lovely, I'm glad you can appreciate it." Her expression quickly shifted to visible anger as the guild mate made the mistake of relating her to a dragon. "I already told you... I am a Kaijin of Kaijū-jima, Monster Island. My race is in no way, shape, or form related to Dragons. Aside from the fact we are more ancient than even they." A vein throbbed at her temple, and the woman exhaled two twin jets of coarse black smoke from her nostrils as she let off steam. "Dragons were responsible for toppling our empire are driving us into the sea so they could come to rule Ishgar for themselves. It is a grudge we have never forgiven them for."

The mere mention of dragons had already dampened her mood, especially being compared to them. She folded her arms crossed in a display of her agitation, as she listened to Gangting speak. "I'll never become a stronger mage by staying inside. The path to power is paved in Jobs and Jewels. I need experience, renown, fame, and wealth. I want to burn my legacy into the pages of the history books, and no one ever did that by sitting around inside all day." Cassiopeia said curtly, slapping her tail hard against the ground at her feet. "I have magics to master, spells to learn, rare items to buy, and glory to achieve. My kind have a saying, even the largest Daikaiju once began life as the smallest egg. It means my road is long, and my beginnings are humble, but with persistence anything is possible."

Cassiopeia was about to ask for the short version of the story, but her guild mate responded just as she opened her mouth. It seemed they were on the same wavelength, as he introduced himself as Gangting of Duoshang. Another recent addition to Dies Irae, to which Cassiopeia raised an eyebrow. "How recent is recently, Gangting?" She asked curiously, "I have only been a member for a few weeks, and spent much of it traveling."

Something about Gangting's story still puzzled her, and Cassiopeia turned back to face the Job Board behind her. It contained a map of the whole of Earthland, with job flyers plastered over their countries of origin until there was little visible space left beneath. "I have never heard of this Duoshang before." Cassiopeia said simply, lifting a finger to her chin as she studied the map. "Is it a nation? Or a city?" She wondered aloud, shifting aside some of the flyers to look at the eastern nations she was less familiar with. Casisopeia's travels mostly included the western shores of Ishgar, and she'd seen much of Fiore, Caelum, Minstrel, and Midi... but little else.

Gangting tilted his head and frowned, I am not the only one with a good nose. His shoulders dropped and his eyes showed hurt. ”Not a job, a calling, an obligation. A mandate of my god,” the redhaired slayer spoke with a thick voice, ”It was indeed too much for me. I was foolish enough to have made myself believe I could. I would not have survived if not for divine intervention.”

He nodded and brought a curled up his lips back into a soft smile. He was soon taken aback and took a step back for the anger that woman showed after he mentioned dragons. He watched as smoke poured from her nose and waited till her rage had ended. ”My apologies then, but I have no idea what a Kaijin is, nor have I ever heard of Kaijin-ima or monster island.” said Gangting calmly. ”Hmm, a war with dragons? I only have encountered single dragon attacks, never attacks in groups let alone on the magnitude of war.” He stroke his crimson beard. How would you defend against that, he wondered. Never in his life had he ever thought of the possibility of more than one, or two, dragons attacking simultaneously. He finally shook his thoughts away and broke the silence that had ensued during his thinking. ”I’m sorry to hear that, it’s a terrible thing to lose one’s home.” To Gangting a nation equals as home.

Gangting listened in silence to the heated woman and only spoke until she was done. ”There is merit in your words, there is. But,” He looked aside and towards the ground, he continued in a bitter tone, ”carve your feats in rock, and carve them deep. Books can get lost, forgotten or burned. They are small and fragile things,” Gangting looked at the woman with sober eyes, ”but even stone will fade over time, the once-proud walls will crumble. Temples collapse and glyphs will fade as stone is worked by time. Is it worth it put so much effort in what you do, solely to be written up in some dull book?” Gangting was bitter, it had been his youth dream to be remembered by his feats in battle. By the wonders, he had created. He had the opportunity to find out how well he was remembered when he woke from aeons of slumber, but he found a world that was oblivious about him, Duoshang or any event that had taken place during his life. History had not been kind to him and had forgotten him. ”But do grow stronger, and gain more knowledge. The guild, and the world, can use stronger mages that fight for the good.” Gangting was silent for a moment before he continued again, ”Daikaiju? he asked curiously, yet another strange word, ”That is a wise saying, something all should take at heart.” He touched his chest right arm.

”Two weeks now I think, I haven’t exactly kept track.” As he looked up, trying to recall the date he joined. ”Ah okay. I have spent my days recovering from my injuries, but it seems that they won’t heal any time soon. I have had enough of waiting.”

Gangting had wasn’t surprised. ”It’s both yet neither,” said the redhaired giant cryptically and gave her a moment to think. ”Duoshang was a city I founded but it was its own nation. It was built in one of the largest mountain valleys you can imagine. The city had three sets of walls. The outer was build upon the mountain ridges and the other two, where inner walls.” he sighed, ”It was a beacon of hope, a place of refuge for people plagued by monsters and demons. The sadness returned to his eyes. ”It had ones grown to the size of an empire…” Gangting didn’t finish the sentences. He looked at the map, it was only the map of Earthland. ”Duoshang lies to the far north in the east. The mountains lie between a huge desert of scarlet sands and the other side, where I was born, was lush with forests and meadows.”

Post by Cassiopeia 10th July 2019, 5:18 pm

Cassiopeia's anger soften as she saw the hurt in the man's eyes. She had touched on a nerve, commenting on his injuries. Though her tail flexed in irritation at the mention of the word 'god', she spoke nothing of it. The people of Earthland were by and large a deeply religious folk. They prayed to any one of a hundred Gods for strength, safety, and prosperity. To insult their Gods was to insult them. Divinity was the enemy of her race, not mankind. Cassiopeia often had to remember that fact. "I see... well, for what it is worth I'm happy you survived. You God clearly places faith in you, to intervene to save your life." Cassiopeia was envious of what that must be like. No deity was descending from the Heavens to protect her anytime soon.

The Kaijin let out a sigh, giving the tall warrior a half hearted smile. "No, I suppose you don't. Most don't, and we prefer keep it that way. Though if we're going to be guild mates then it is best you know the truth of me." Cassiopeia said as she lifted her tail around to hold in her arms, petting it like a fat snake. "The Kaijin are, in simple terms, the descendants of the Daikaiju. Kaijin is, for lack of a better translation, 'beast man', 'strange man', or even 'sea man' in the common tongue. Though the latter is more due to our island home than a direct translation. Daikaiju is 'great beast' or 'strange beast' in a literal translation of the words, though I have found the word 'Titan" best describes the race."

Cassiopeia sighed and looked at her tail, it was the purest sign of her own ancestry. "Envision a race of monsters, a hundred times bigger than a dragon. Their footsteps shook the ground and their magic could sunder mountains. That would be the Daikaiju, who ruled Earthland in an age before man harnessed fire and dragons took to the skies. Before they were wiped out, the Daikaiju took tribes of humans into their fold. Cultists, followers that worshiped them as living gods. They bestowed on them a portion of their magic, their primordial essence. The Daikaiju were wiped out by the Gods in a war unlike any before, but the Kaijin remained."

The woman let out another long sigh, lamenting on the past always made her heart hurt. "For a time, we had an empire of our own, ruling over the world like the Daikaiju before us. Dragons saw an end to that, and we are but a fraction of the strength the Daikaiju before us were. The Kaijin Empire lost battle after battle to the Dragons, though I promise you we left the ground littered in their bones. Ultimately we were driving into the sea, to our last, and most sacred island. It is there we remain, a shadow of our once glorious past." The words left a bitter taste in her mouth.

Cassiopeia could hear the sting in Gangting's words as he spoke bitterly on the legacies of the history books. "My kind have another saying, Gangting, one that you might better appreciate." She said, letting go of her tail and placing a hand on the man's armored shoulder. "The elders say everyone dies twice. Once, when their body is given back to the earth. And again, when their name is uttered for the final time. We will venerate our ancestors eternally, until the last Kaijin draws their last breath the Daikaiju have earned their immortality. I seek the same place in history, a name worthy of remembrance until the end of time. The hearts and minds of mankind will outlast any stone, and any book."

The woman listened as Gangting recounted his own homeland, the city-state of Duoshang. Cassiopeia listened keenly, having never heard of such a place. "It sounds wonderful." She admitted as he finished. "Though I could never imagine living far from the sea. Dies Irae being located on Amber Island was a part of the reason I joined." She then turned back to the world map on the Job Board, pointing to an empty patch of ocean far to the west of Caelum. "And there, sits my home. You'll not find Kaijū-jima on many maps, and few know how to chart our waters. A month's sail west of Caelum, the furthest point westwards until you reach a vast, seemingly endless ocean. Our waters are plagued by tropical storms, teaming with sea monsters, and reefs and shoals make for difficult navigation even in calm seas."

Cassiopeia paused, swallowing a lump in her throat. It wasn't often she found herself homesick, but talking of the past had done it all the same. "Kaijū-jima is a large island, it takes a week to travel from one end to other. We have steep mountainous peaks covered in dense jungle, with a large volcano at the island's center. My kind build cities along the jungle's rivers, connected by roads cut through the heart of the jungle. Each city is dedicated to a different Daikaiju, and boasts a massive temple that houses their bones. It took millennia to recover them all from their final resting places across Earthland. That is why I called our island sacred, and why it is the one place we refused to cede to the Dragons at any cost. No army will ever set foot on Kaijū-jima, no conqueror, man or dragon or god will ever plant his banner on our isle. We would sooner see the whole world burn around us then see how homeland conquered."

Gangting lightly bowed his head towards the ground, ”He does… and hopefully rightly so.” Gangting thought back at those last moments in Duoshang. He had been overwhelmed by the spawn of darkness. He had fought for days and night without end in the rouble of his capital. He was out of ethernano, out of strength and tired. He fell on his knees to pray. Tudigong answered it swiftly. There was a low rumbling thunder, deep within the earth’s depth. It grew louder and louder until even the ground started to vibrate. After that everything went fast, the earth roared as if were alive, the earth quaked and shook heavy.the Heavier than Gangting had ever witnessed. This earthquake made the earthquake that was meant to humble the self-proclaimed God-King look like the tremble of an elephant. It cracked and broke walls and torn down most of the buildings. Next came the Avatar of Tudigong, sand, rocks and bricks flew up in the air and formed into the shape of a giant Tudigong. The damage Tudigong had done, and confusion that came with it, gave Gangting an opportunity retreat.

Gangting nodded, he recognizes the value of knowledge about the men you serve with. The shortest pike is were the phalanx is the weakest w,as a saying among soldiers of his army. A unit, or better, a community like an army worked better when it knew what they could expect from each other and so was it with a guild like Dies Irae. Gangting finally started eating from the little cake the Cassiopeia had thrown to her. It was gone with two bites. Curious taste. He wiped away the crumbs with his hand. ”I see.” He moved his hand through his hair, which didn’t do his hair much favour but it was a thing he did when he tries to memorize things. All those strange and difficult names are asking a toll on him.

Gangting listens in awe to the Kaijin lady as she continued to speak about her species history, and of the Daikaiju. They do sound like the gods themselves, thought Gangting as he heard her describe their amazing strength and size. He hoped that the size was an over-exaggeration. ”Why would the gods fight with the Daikaiju?” asked the giant slayer, ”or did the Daikaiju try to overthrow the gods.” Gangting had tried to overthrow Tudigong when he was in a state of insanity, it didn’t go well.

He noticed that the woman was also emotionally touched by the past. ”That is good,” Gangting referred to the high price that the dragons had to pay. He reminded him of a king of a kingdom who fought against another state, he had won all his battles but was famous for saying “One more victory like this and I have lost the war.” after his second last battle. He had won is last battle too, and lost war as he predicted. He had paid to high a price for his victories. ”All things that begin must end,” said the giant solemnly, ”yet maybe a new golden age can shine upon your people.”

Gangting followed the tail as she let go of it, she laid a hand upon his shoulder. It was strange that someone could do that and had to look down upon him. ”That is the truth indeed, your people are wise.” That would have meant that he had returned from the dead, a second chance, if you call his entombment death. He nodded, ”That’s very true.”

He frowned, he supposed it made sense for her as she had lived her life on the island. He felled trapped on the Amber Island, it was too small for him. ”I would rather have it a peninsula instead. I did propose to Johann for me to lay a broad path from the Isle to the main continent.” It would not have been the first time he had done that, a grin appeared on his face as he recalled the siege of Tetra. A city built upon an island. He was bored so he had his men make siege towers, instead of him levelling the walls as usual. He had sent a messenger to the city once they were completed to offer them to surrender before the siege towers would touch the wall, otherwise no quarter would be given. They laughed at him and told the messenger the city was on an island, the messenger replied, as instructed, that it was a peninsula instead. The city council looked from the wall and saw the siege towers slowly crawled up towards the wall. They surrendered there and then. He would have loved to see their faces in that moment. Gangting followed Cassiopeia’s finger, to an empty bit of ocean were Kaijū-jima supposedly lies. ”That sounds like a good natural defence.” Gangting looked often at things from a commanders point of view.

Gangting listened closely to what the dark-haired woman told her about her home. ”That sounds very impressive, I would love to see it sometime.” Specifically the mountains, but with a different means to travel then boat. He was not going to be seasick for a month, not even for a couple of days, to see mountains. Gangting already didn’t like to use the boat back to the mainland.

Gangting decided that it was time to move their conversation away from the emotional past to the unknown future. He cleared his throat. ”Have you picked a job yet? he asked, ”we could do a job together? Then we can also take up something more challenging.” And he could see how she fights.

"Why would the Gods fight the Daikaiju?" Cassiopeia asked mockingly in reply. "Why would mankind fight the Dragons? The answer is the same. Because it is the nature of things to thrive to a higher calling. The Daikaiju fought in an endless war against one another before the Titanomachy, vying for the title of 'King of the Monsters.' Their battles ravaged Earthland, drying seas, burning forests, turning mountains to rubble. The Gods grew angry that the their delicate balance was upset, and sought to restore the world to its intended state."

Cassiopeia looked back at the map, then to Gangting. "Only a common enemy, divinity, was enough to unite the Daikaiju as one body. It was too little, too little, and all we have left to remember them by is stories and bones." She scoffed at the man's words that her kind may yet enter a new golden age. Shaking her head, she replied in a solemn tone. "No, the sun set on our empire long ago. It is Mankind's world now, not ours. All my race holds onto is the hope we do not vanish into the night. Mankind is like a flower, always striving to be the tallest, bloom the brightest. The Kaijin... we simply hope we may remain in the garden." This sad truth was a major reason Cassiopeia had left in the first place. Her kind were too fixated on preserving their old ways. They sought only to maintain the status quo, never thinking to better themselves. Not her though, she aspired for so much more.

"Wise, because we are ancient." Cassiopeia said with a somber grin. "When your kind has existed for so long, you have plenty of time to make mistakes. And, plenty longer to learn from them. Behind every piece of good advise was once a bad decision. The elders say that too... but I digress." Her thoughts shifted to the mage's comment on laying a path to the mainland. He could do that? So much earth to be moved, a seabed raised. Just what rank of a mage was this Gangting? She felt it rude to simply ask. "A peninsula... hmm. I could live with that. So long as there's calm shores, sandy beaches, and lush jungles, I don't much care what shape the landmass takes."

Talk of home made the Kaijin homesick. She knew far away her mother and father likely worried for her, praying at the Temple of Gojira for her continued well being. She would need visit, once she had more savings built up. Take gifts home to the temple, see her parents, speak with the clan elders. Soon, she told herself. Soon. "It is... It's.... magnificent. The jungles are teaming with wild and ferocious beasts, with trees taller than any I've seen since. It is a primordial land, truly befitting of its name. You're welcome to come with... next time I visit. Not that I can say when that is."

Cassiopeia snapped back to the present when Gangting commented on a job. "Right. Was lost in the past. Anyways..." She looked at the Job Board, snatching up a flyer that had caught her attention. "Here, this one should do." The Kaijin said, holding it out for her guild mate to read. "It's located in Minstrel, so it's only a day's sail away. Looks like they've got a pirate's cove that needs clearing out. It's foggy on the caliber of the sea dogs, but... for those Jewels they're offering I bet they're no pushovers." She handed the flyer to the warrior, waiting for his reply. "Challenging enough for you?"

Gangting scratched his beard. ”I see,” Gangting blew some air from his nose, ”never anger the gods. With such power, that can be witnessed, I can understand why people worshipped them and why your people still do.” Gangting had never seen a god do anything in person except for Tudigong, he had never been a very religious person until his meeting with Tudigong. Tudigong had said there were other gods as well, but none deserved the worship from him.

”That’s a pessimistic view you got.” It saddened him. Gangting was and always has been a person who had been optimistic. It had always been a driving force, things could always get better. ”It is the prettiest flowers that are cut, the tallest tree that is felled first. Life is like a river; it starts small but meanders its way to the big sea. Going left, going right, splitting into more streams or joining with others. You never know how things go and what opportunities are there. A golden age does not, necessarily mean, empire building. It’s a moment to bloom. Some flowers may indeed flower only ones in their life before it withers away, some bloom many times. There is no way of knowing until it is truly dead. But even then, it’s seed will sprout new flowers; a new generation ready to bloom.”

”ferocious beast?” Gangting liked the idea of hunting, like the monarchs that had surrounded his kingdom. But there was no challenge in killing a lion or a mountain tiger, the war against demons had been his sport. Who knows if these beasts could be a challenge? ”It sounds amazing. I would be honoured.” As long as it isn’t by boat, he thought to himself.

Gangting tried to read the paper the woman shows her; he had learned to read these ‘letters’ as they are called but he was far from adept at them. He preferred his glyphs. She handed him the paper and continued reading. It took him a moment to read it through. ”Pirates?” Gangting had run into pirates more than one’s. He looked up, grinning from ear to ear. ”Pirates are fun. We will see if they do, but it will kill time. When we are done with them; they will be scared to see land ever again.” Gangting laughed at what he had said.

”I do need to visit the kitchen for food. After that, I am ready to leave, whenever…” Gangting paused a slight moment and his facial expression showed discomfort, the boat is ready to head to the mainland.” He didn’t look forward to what was to come on the ship. ”When are you ready?

"No..." Cassiopeia said calmly. "Only anger someone if you can take them in a fight." She said dryly, exhaling a puff of black smoke from her nostrils. Her fiery gaze glared down at the shorter warrior, and the Kaijin slapped her heavy tail against the ground as fresh irritation overtook her. "Behind every pessimist is a jaded realist, Gangting." She added coldly, "As I said, we only wish to remain in the garden of life. Whether or not you consider that a 'golden age' is your own opinion. The world would never let us return to our heights of power, mankind has claimed Earthland now. And we lack the collective will to aspire to new greatness, which is precisely why I left."

The Kaijin nodded her head yes at the warrior's comment on the beasts of her home yes. "Yes, incredibly so. You've heard of a Wyvern right? Large as a Dragon, almost as stronger, half as smart? Imagine an island teaming with beasts just as ferocious. Some walk, some fly, some swim. There are Terrorsaurs, King Rex, Thunder Lizards, Stegadons, Bastilodons, Carnosaurs, and so many more. The jungles of my home are rife with ancient beasts leftover from the times when the Daikaiju walked Earthland. Most exist nowhere else."

When the conversation shifted towards the prospect of a Job, Gangting seemed rather excited. "Ideally when we are done they fear nothing they didn't already." Cassiopeia said, letting out a huff. "Because either they'll be floating at the bottom of a watery grave or locked in irons and facing Minstrel's justice." She snatched back the job flyer from the man, rolling it up neatly and sliding it in between her vast cleavage for safe keeping.

Cassiopeia noted for the second time now Gangting's face displayed clear discomfort when he mentioned a boat. he gave him a curious look, but said nothing on the matter. "If you need food from the kitchens, I could always do with another snack." The Kaijin said, ravenous as she was tall. It took a lot of energy to keep her going, and most of the fat on her body was stored in her tail. She blew the warrior a kiss, turning on her heels and slowly sashaying away towards the kitchen. Her wide, childbearing hips moving in a steady swaying rhythm with each step. "Gangting darling, it's I should have been asking you if you were ready. I was the one at the Job Board first, I've been ready for an hour." Cassiopeia said nonchalantly, tossing back her as she rounded a corner. "Now hurry along, we don't have all day..."

Down the post is a better image.

Gangting looked with curiosity at the smoke Cassiopeia breathed out. He leaned backwards when he noticed that the giant woman aggravated. He raised his hands slightly as surrender, ”Who know what the right view is.” revering to the pessimistic and optimistic views. He nodded and raised his hands once more, ”Okay.” But it sounds like you are the seed I was talking about, he finished in his mind. He didn’t deem it wise to throw more oil on the fire.

”Yes I have heard of those, yet never have I laid my eyes upon one.” Gangting scratched his beard, ”those are powerful names. Do your people hunt those creatures?”

Gangting shrugged. ”That would be true indeed.” The paper he held in his hands vanished as Cassiopeia stored the job request away. He frowned when the dark-haired woman blew him a kiss. He stood for a moment perplexed, watching as the raven-haired giantess walked away, and softly whispered; ”What a woman.” He had met with many people over the course of his life, in this era and his own, yet none came close to her in many ways. She was intense, mysterious and, in her reptilious way, alluring. He frowned; he was ready as well in a sense, but he had to know how long he would be away before he could plunder the kitchen for enough food.  He followed her to the kitchen.

Gangting browsed the shelves of the storage room at the back of the kitchen. He filled a large bag with a modest wheel of cheese and grabbed a few strings of sausages as well. They wouldn’t be away for too long, a couple of days at most, so he could also bring perishable goods with him. Those included three just baked large oval-shaped breads which had a thick crunchy crust. He also picked out a decent sized steak which he wrapped in waxed paper, that would be part of his dinner today. He took a small keg of Minstrel wine and an empty keg, of the same size, with him as well. The empty keg would be filled with fresh water. It seemed quite a load to bear, even for Gangting but it wasn’t his intent to carry it. He would fill his auroch pulled chariot Lei Bagong, Thunder Strike in the common tongue, with the goods. The chariot had originally belonged to a thunder god, but the Giant Bo-De-Dong had won it in some competition, Gangting, in turn, won it from Bo-De-Dong. His chariot could ascend and descend between the mortal plane and the divine realm and Gangting used it as his crude version of the personal pocket space magic that Requip users used. Gangting then realized that there was another way for him to travel to the mainland, his chariot could fly. It was not something he was fond of as he didn’t like great heights and barely ever used it to fly. Flying over the sea wouldn’t be much better either but at least he wouldn’t get seasick, which was something inseverable on a boat. The redhaired giant scratched at his head as he turned to Kaijin. ”Uuh, we don’t need to wait for the boat,” he said and pointed to his chariot, ”It can fly us to Minstrel.”

"Naturally." Cassiopeia said with a fanged smirk in response to Gangting. "My people hunt all the native beasts of our isle, and many of the sea. We raise the monsters of our island as beasts of burden, we use great horned herbivores as you humans use oxen and horses. The predators of the island, in addition to making worthy hunts, make for even better sport in the arenas. Young Kaijin gladiators test their mettle against packs of Scythe Claws or a bull Terrorsaur for the amusement of the masses." Cassiopeia thought fondly of the blood soaked sands of the great gladiator coliseums. Her race was fond of blood sports, it was a preferred means of executing criminals. Give them a chance to fight for their lives against their executioners. "Magic is forbidden when fighting beasts in the arena. It is meant to test bravery, and skill with weapon and shield."

Cassiopeia continued to speak as the two made their way into the kitchens. "The beasts of the isle are one of our chief goods to trade. Bones, hides, teeth, and claws all make for expensive commodities. Eggs are sold to Easterners as exotic pets, and sometimes adults are sold for foreign zoos or menageries. Though... without a Kaijin beastmaster to tend to them, the creatures of our isle are prone to rampage under duress." For this reason, said a beastmaster was a good source of employ for a fellow exiled Kaijin. Those will the knowledge to tame and command the monsters of Kaijū-jima could earn a handsome pay tending to them in the menagerie of some wealthy aristocrat or nobleman.

The Kaijin watched as her new friend gathered up his provisions. She was more direct, finding a large smoked ham and grabbing it by the bone to gnaw great bites out of. Between swallows she continued her story. "My brothers are mostly hunters in fact. A new moon was cast on the day of our hatching. The elders say they can predict fates based on the lunar phases. A New Moon is hunters, who wish to move under cover of darkness. A Crescent Moon is for farmers, as it resembles the scythes they use to sow their fields. And a Full Moon is for soldiers, for the full moon is said to shine red after days of bloodshed." Cassiopeia thought to herself on her brothers. She had close a hundred siblings in total, not all blood related. Eggs were tended to in communal nests, overseen by shamans and medicine men until they hatched. Temperature could be used to regulate whether an egg gestated as male for female, allowing talented shamans to tailor each nest to suite their tribe's needs.

Cassiopeia watched with a puzzled look on her face as Gangting loaded up a chariot of all things with his supplies. She finished the meat and snapped up the bone to eat as well. "It can fly?" She said questioningly, it wasn't that bit that puzzled her. Magical items were common, and she had no idea what kind of magic Gangting even employed. It's just.. Cassiopeia disliked flying. Her kind were made for the jungles and the seas, not the skies above. "Well if it can fly, you're welcome to do that." Cassiopeia said, not wanting to ride on the chariot.

The Kaijin threw up her arms and crossed them behind her head. "If you're going to fly... then I'm going to swim." She said nonchalantly. It was after all, how she had first reached Amber Island when she joined. Cassiopeia made her way outside the Throne Hall, looking at the bustling Amber Port beyond. It was a quaint little town, and it was going to have to get used to what she was about to do. "Swimming is more natural to me anyways, the Daikaiju my clan descends from was a great leviathan of the depths, as much at home in the water as on land."

Cassiopeia smiled, taking a wide stance and clenching her fists tight. "Now watch, and stand back." She said confidently, as the Kaijin summoned her ancient magic. The bony ridges and dorsal spines alone her back began to glow a brilliant bright blue, almost a white. The energy crackled with lightning, moving up the length of her tail and mine. Her eyes changed color from their normal orange to a fiery crimson and she opened her mouth, letting out a primal roar. The Kaijin woman began to grow, using Jiyaianto magic to increase her size. Cassiopeia grew, clothing and all, until she was some fifty feet tall and nearly a hundred feet long to the tip of her tail. The energy radiating from her spines diminished as she completed her spell, and the Kaijin now towered over most of the smaller buildings in town. Though the palatial Throne Hall of Dies Irae remained far larger.

Rolling her head and cracking her neck, the Kaijin took a moment to admire her newfound size. "There... much better." Her voice boomed, echoing off the guild hall. "Let's get going then... I can't stay this size forever." She said aloud, as Cassiopeia began to take great strides down the bustling streets of Amber Port. Naturally, the citizens of the sleepy guild town were startled by the now gigantic woman walking down their streets. They frantically hurried out of the way, though in truth Cassiopeia was ever careful not to step on anything important. Her guild uniform did little to ease their discomfort, no doubt afraid she'd destroy homes accidentally or otherwise.

As she reached the actual harbor, Cassiopeia took a careful step over the wharves as not to break them beneath her weight. The waters of the Minstrellian coast were warm, warmer than the more northernly Fiore anyways. Even still they felt cold after a day cooped up inside. Cassiopeia shivered slightly, as she eased into the harbor waters, which came up to her chest. She turned back to give Gangting one last grin, "Try to keep up." She teased, diving forward and displacing a wave of water large enough to stir the ships of the dock. Cassiopeia began swimming out to sea, moving at great speed even for her size. Her spines protruded from above the waterline, giving a clear outline of her as she moved. Her powerful tail propelled her forward, assisted by her arms and legs to achieve speeds greater than most galleons, even in favorable winds could reach. Cassiopeia was headed due east, she could get her barrings between when she arrived. For now she was simply moving with purpose.

The Redhaired warrior glanced curious at the bare fangs, of Reptilious woman, that appeared presented themselves when she grinned. ”Gladiator games? They still exist?” shouted Gangting out in surprise and excitement, ”I have encountered those anymore.” Gangting was fond gladiator games and was a patron to its existence within his kingdom. He had erected several amphitheatres within his realm, the five largest were located within Duoshang itself. He had never seen any since, after his reawakening. ”They must be most impressive with such beast, and very bloody too.” Gangting eye’s widened, she spoke baffled;”No magic?”. They didn’t use magic in his gladiator games as well but those were against mundane creatures such as aurochs, lions and hippo’s. The exception of the rule was duels, were magic sometimes utilized. The creatures that Cassiopeia had described sounded difficult to fell and extremely dangerous. The Kaijin might tower tall above any mundane human but still, how could one defeat such beast without the aid of magic?

Gangting listened closely, I should get some of those then. It would be worth the expense in Gangting’s eyes, even though he didn’t knew about the exact price, thoughts likely to expensive for in the amphitheatre. ”Interesting.”

Gangting looked up, ”Do you believe they can?” Gangting was sceptical about it, it sounded nice indeed. However, if the moon was to be red after bloodshed, mankind wouldn’t known anything else than a red moon. He didn’t share his thoughts on the matter, he didn’t want to insult her or her people. He frowned at the fact she was she was casually eating a large ham. ”Are those the only professions your people have?”

The giant shook his head up and down, ”Yes, yes it can.” Gangting tiled his head and in a confused voice he asked, ”Swim? It’s a long-distance?” Gangting could understand that someone didn’t liked to fly, he too didn’t liked it but it was the lesser evil of his two options. ”Ow, okay.” He wondered how long she would swim over it, hopefully not half a day.

Gangting witnessed in awe the transformation of Cassiopeia. He was baffled at what he saw. The strange protrusions on her back started to glow, the radiant light was blue of hue. Never before had Gangting seen such dazzling intense blue in his life. But this bewilderment was just the beginning, the protrusions on her back and tail seemed to sprout lightning. Her eye’s light up and she let out a deafening roar. Gangting covered his ears and aurochs, even thoughts they have been in the thickest of battles, prances and kick out of fear as the white of their eyes flashed looking for the perpetrator. The reptilian-tailed woman then started to grow to an immense size. He blinked his eyes a couple times and looked up to the skies. He already felt small besides her but now he was but a dwarf to her.

”Wow,” uttered Gangting. He started baffled at the giant Kaijin for a moment as she moved towards the shore, each step she took made the earth vibrate beneath his feet. He shook his head in disbelieve. He stepped onto his chariot and took the reins in his hand. The animals were still not calmed down from the shocking roar they had heard. ”Easy boys,” He pulled the reigns and the animals dashed away, almost straight into a gallop. The wheels clattered over the uneven ground as they speeded up. The gears attached to the wheels turned the dynamo of the electric battery stored underneath the chariot, it would generate the energy for the thunderous charge that the chariot could perform.  Electricity sparked from the wheels as it was near top speed. Ganting pulled the reigns again and the hooves of the aurochs started to beat into thin air, they were soon detached from the ground and the two wheels of the chariot followed with them shortly after. Gangting grabbed the railing in front of him, it was made of solid bronze and if it weren’t it would have bend under the rock-hard grasp of the Earth Demon Slayer. He stared straight ahead, somewhere behind the horizon was solid land. His shoulders were raised, and upper arms clenched against his body. He only dared to look down once to see the giant Cassiopeia swim through the sea as a whale, his stomach turned as he looked at the broken reflections of the sea’s surface. If he fell now, he would surely drown, his grip on bronze railing tightened, his copper-coloured hands turned white as the blood was pushed out of his hands. He followed the leviathan with clenched teeth, desperately looking ahead to see land. He made a silent prayer to Tudigong, his God of Land and Soil.

Gangting landed his chariot on the beach, he had safely reached the coast of Minstrel. He jumped of his chariot before it stood still and felt the coarse sand beneath his feet and enjoyed the feeling. It was as if he stood up soft fluffy feathers. He preferred to stand upon a more solid ground like stone or dirt as the loose sand grains barely allowed for seeing with vibrations. It a thousand times better then being in mid air or on the wooden deck of a ship that was waving upon the sea. He opened and closed his sleeping hands, which were tingling and hurting. He stretched his arms behind his neck and cracked his stiff neck.

UNWAVERING AND UNBREAKABLE. STAND THINE GROUND.
