Re: Goodbye To Gerald
After defeating Mortalis and saving the merchants, Victoria just wanted to slow down for a few days. However, the choice was taken out of her hands. She was cleaning the bar and restaurant after another busy night of serving drinks when a brown-haired young man in a clean black pinstripe suit entered with a letter for her.
As soon as he gave it to her he left without another word. How strange. Victoria opened the letter and read it over. It was from Gerald, a man she had spent a lot of time with after Lawrence saved her from the slavers. He was a tall, burly man who liked good food, good alcohol, and the occasional dirty joke. He was also a bouncer at the bar she tended under Frank Taylor's careful eye.
Whenever someone tried to hit on Victoria, either Frank or Gerald were there to shut it down. One time a sailor threatened to kick Victoria's ass because he erroneously believed that she had watered down his rum. Gerald quickly decked him with a fist to the face and showed the rowdy customer the door.
She had always wondered what happened to Gerald after she left to join Black Rose. Now she knew, and what she read was distressing. A plague had killed all the residents of Gerald's hole-in-the-wall town except him. They had reanimated and bit him, but he escaped and fled to the Abandoned Cabin in the Cursed Lands. She wondered if the curse was part of Mortalis' plan or if it was someone else's handiwork.
Victoria informed Samantha that the former was taking a trip to the Cursed Lands. Samantha nodded and made a note to post on Victoria's room door. The brunette then rushed to her room to get ready for the lengthy trip.

Re: Goodbye To Gerald
-The Cursed Lands-
Roughly eight hours later, Victoria arrived in the Cursed Lands and was some distance away from the Abandoned Cabin. She wore a gray t-shirt with black skirt and bike shorts underneath them. She wore white tennis shoes and wore a black jacket over the shirt. On her back was the backpack of water, food, and basic medical supplies.
Like when she went to confront Mortalis, the moon was full and its pale light illuminated the area enough that she could see without having to use a flashlight. That was a mixed blessing. On one hand, Victoria could see enemies before they could see her. On the other hand, she could not really hide from them either. Still, she would gladly take the moonlight over not being able to see enemies in time.
Victoria spotted figures in the distance. She summoned her sniper rifle because its range would allow her to take down enemies long before they became aware of her. Its suppressor would reduce the chances of drawing more enemies than she could handle at once. Thanks to the moonlight she would not need anything like night vision scopes to see targets. If she could see it, she could shoot it.
As Victoria walked along the ground she noticed splotches of dried blood on the grass. She could not tell if it was animal or human, but it was definitely blood. That meant that she needed to be careful because something dangerous was about. The Cursed Lands had worse to offer than zombies. Still, she had to keep going because Gerald needed her.
Gerald had saved the brunette from dangerous situations plenty of times at Frank's Tavern. Now it was time to repay the favor. She would go in, kill all the zombies and hostile beings in the area, get him out of the cabin, and take him back to safety in Rose Garden. It was a simple plan. All that she had to do was make it happen.

Re: Goodbye To Gerald
Victoria spotted a rotting bear up sniffing around the bloodstained grass just ahead. Something had taken chunks out of its sides and face and its eyes were a milky white. The congealed blood from its gaping wounds glistened in the moonlight. Its movements were stiff and jerky like someone was moving a puppet on strings. It was oblivious to her, so she dropped to one knee, took careful aim, and fired a Kinetic Shot.
The bear's head suddenly sprouted a hole and sprayed congealed blood in a "black mist" as it was sent rocketing backwards. It was not even a fair fight. However, the bear had at least a one-hundred pound weight advantage on her. No one with any common sense would want to get into a fair fight with a zombified bear. No one with any common sense would want to get into a fair fight with any bear.
Victoria briefly stopped to examine the zombie bear's carcass. She could not tell what exactly had wounded the bear to this extent. The bite marks did not look human, but it was hard to tell since the wounds had been widened by local scavenging animals. The scavenging animals had probably become zombies from eating the tainted meat of the bear, so she had to be careful. She kept walking towards the cabin.

Re: Goodbye To Gerald
Victoria was walking towards the cabin when she spotted a pair of ghosts floating up ahead and decided to take cover behind a tree. They looked like transparent blue people in old-fashioned attire who were missing their legs. She dropped to one knee, aimed her rifle, and fired a Kinetic Shot at the man on the right. It passed right through it with no resistance. The specter of a man in an old suit glared at her like she was an idiot for even trying to shoot a ghost.
The brunette scrambled to find an alternate way of fighting the ghosts. Grenades would not work on them. Neither would her shotgun. Punching them was also out of the question. Victoria put away her rifle and clenched her fists in consternation. She noticed that shadows cast by the trees and bushes were starting to gather around her as if waiting for instructions.
What was going on? How was it that she had not noticed this sooner? Victoria focused on her hands and saw that they were now jet black. She felt that this might do the trick. One of the ghosts floated towards her and she punched it in the chest, dissipating it with an unearthly scream.
Its companion did not last much longer. It started to turn around to flee when Victoria rammed a shadowy fist through its chest. It screamed and faded back to where it came from. This new ability was a handy one. It enabled her to fight ghosts without using weapons... she wondered what else it could do.
With the ghostly menace disposed of, Victoria continued towards the cabin. She was halfway there. She hoped that Gerald was still alive.

Re: Goodbye To Gerald
Victoria spotted another rotting bear in the distance. This one was feeding on a human corpse. She stuck to the treeline to get the most out of her newly discovered ability to manipulate shadows and turn them into weapons. She noticed that the shadows only obeyed her at a range of up to 50 meters, a downside which put her on something of a short leash. On the flip side, within that range the brunette's power was a formidable one; even without a weapon she was a threat.
The wind shifted and the undead bear caught her scent. It huffed and stood on its hind legs before giving a mighty roar. It was fight time. With clenched fists Victoria strode confidently to meet the ursine menace and raised them into a ready position. The shadows followed suit and when she punched at the bear the shadows reached out and slugged the bear.
One punch hit, then both punches hit. The bear began to recoil from the unarmed beatdown, but she was not going to let up until it was dead... again. Victoria kept punching until the bear was lying on its side and feebly struggling to get up. She kept punching until it did not move except when she hit it. Once she was certain that it was now truly dead, she stopped hitting it.
This was the first time Victoria had ever punched a bear to death. Hopefully it would be the last time she had to do so. Despite being a mage, getting in hand-to-hand combat with bears was rarely a good idea. She was almost to the cabin, but first she had zombies to deal with. They were swaying around the cabin as if waiting for something... or someone.

Re: Goodbye To Gerald
A dozen zombies were standing between her and the cabin that Gerald had taken refuge in. They were not going to move away on their own. Victoria would have to make them move, and she had everything she needed to knock them aside. She walked to meet them and the shadow of the cabin hastened to serve her. Victoria raised her hands and began swinging.
The zombies were being knocked around like ragdolls and there was nothing they could do to stop her. Victoria's hands were too fast and reached too far for them to stop. Zombie after zombie fell from hammer blows to the head until none remained standing. The brunette was starting to like this new power of hers. Now only one thing remained to do... open the cabin door and see if Gerald was still alive.
Victoria approached the door, steadied her shaking hands, and carefully turned the doorknob. She looked inside and soon regretted it. Inside the dimly lit cabin Gerald was standing motionless, staring off into space as blood from multiple bites to the arm dripped onto the wooden floor. Victoria remained silent. She had the unpleasant feeling that she was too late to help him.
The tall, muscular man turned around and faced her with milky white eyes. The unpleasant feeling was confirmed to be an unpleasant reality. Gerald had succumbed to his wounds and the only way to save him was to kill what he had become. Victoria felt uneasy, but it had to be done. The disease had to end with her old friend.
"I'll make this quick." Victoria said without any joy or eagerness for battle. She raised her hands and formed a Hand Cannon. Gerald charged at her with outstretched arms and she fired a single shot. The man's momentum carried him forward; he slid to the ground and did not move again. Gerald was dead.
Victoria checked the inside of the cabin for anything that she could use to transport him. She was not going to leave her friend for the animals and zombies to eat. She located an old but serviceable gray tarp in the corner that she used to wrap him up for transport. She also spotted a letter that she picked up. She was too sad and tired to read it, but she kept it with her so that she could prove that she did not kill him for sport.
Victoria found a rope that she tied around the feet of Gerald's corpse. She then dispelled her shadowy fists and began to pull him behind her. Gerald was going to get a proper cremation in Rose Garden. Her old friend and protector deserved nothing less than to have a proper resting place.

Re: Goodbye To Gerald
-Rose Garden, twenty-four hours later-
Despite the risks of being attacked by animals or bandits, Victoria had managed to bring Gerald home last night. Thanks to having both the job notice and his final letter in her possession, the police did not arrest her as a murderer. On the contrary, her reputation in Rose Garden was so positive that they helped her find a good funeral home to cremate him in and even called a hearse. That was a relief. After an afternoon of bartending, Victoria went to the Romero Funeral Home to witness his cremation.
Gerald had no living family and his friends were too far away, so she was the only one to witness the procedure. After it was done she received his ashes in a bronze urn with his name inscribed on the bottom. It was just as he would want it. It was a simple, quick, and inexpensive ceremony that Victoria paid for. Somehow she felt that he would like that kind of thing.
Victoria took the urn back to her room in Silver Moon Inn and placed it on a shelf for safekeeping. Once that had been done, she looked at it. Maybe she should have sprung for silver or gold, but that would not be what Gerald would want. He did not want a funeral with an expenditure equal to buying a small city. He would also not want her to sit around and mourn for the rest of her life.
Gerald would want her to buy a drink or two, maybe even three. He drank a lot of alcohol, but his drink of choice was CEILING. Victoria could not help but to laugh at that. Of course he would like a strong and cheap vodka. He was a plain and simple guy who liked simple amusements.
Victoria cleaned herself up, took a shower, and put on clean clothes. She wore a green t-shirt and khaki cargo shorts with white tennis shoes. She then walked downstairs and plopped onto an empty bar stool right in front of the bartender, a young woman named Marceline. She was a new but talented bartender who wore long black hair in a ponytail and had piercing blue eyes. She had a talent for learning new drink recipes and might even overtake Victoria in skill some day.
"What'll it be, Victoria?" Marceline asked while shoving a Long Island Iced Tea down the length of the bar to a customer on the other end. The middle-aged man's hand caught it and he voiced thanks while raising the glass.
"A glass of CEILING, on the rocks." Victoria answered. Marceline began to make the drink with practiced ease. Forty-five seconds later the beverage was sitting in front of the brunette.
"So, what's the occasion?" Marceline asked.
"An old friend of mine died. I'm drinking a few for him." Victoria answered truthfully. She had no reason to lie to Marceline about why she was in front of the bar instead of behind it.
"Oh, OK. Sorry about your friend." Marceline consoled her.
"It's OK. He wouldn't want me to mope about it, so here I am." Victoria added before raising the glass and taking a shot. The brunette coughed. CEILING was so strong that she might end up facing it while lying on her back before the night was over. Gerald would not have it any other way.
"To Gerald." Victoria said softly before finishing the drink.
