- Job Title: Thy Enemy has a Face
Rank: D
Player Requirements: 500 Word Requirement. Must have completed Investigating the Growth first.
Job Requirements: Kill the zombies, before reaching and fighting/killing the Robed Figure.
Job Location: Beanstalk Village (Tainted Forest nearby)
Job Description: You receive word from the scientist and come to meet him. When you see him he seems panicky. He explains to you that the growth is corrupting the land and turning it into a sort of siphon, or magical drain, pulling in life force and mana from everything and anything. He tells you that you need to find the source and put a stop to it. He is unsure how far the growth will spread.
When you reach the forest you find it overgrown with tainted plants and growth. The animals are all gone however. The closer you move to the center, which is between Beanstalk Village and Mount Hakobe, you encounter zombies. These corpses seem recent, looking to be either huntsmen or wizards who traveled into the tainted lands. After killing the monsters you soon reach a point where you see the source: It is a large pillar made of unbreakable obsidian. The robed figure approaches and seems unsurprised that a wizard is here and attacks you.
After killing the robed figure you can find multiple things on him. A coin that is identical to the shrouded stalker's coin. A marking on his arm that looks like it may be a guild mark but none that you've ever seen before, even among dark guilds. A book written in an unreadable language. However if you observe it carefully, and flip through the pages, you notice that it looks similar to a sort of religious book, sort of like scriptures.
Upon return to the group you can tell them about the undead, the robed figure, and hand in the items, also telling them that the object is indestructible. OR you can tell them that you destroyed the source and instead go to an informant for dark wizards, thieves, assassins, or others who operate outside the law, share the information and show the items. Either way you shall receive the full reward and information.
Both the wizard and the informant will tell you that they don't know about most of the items, but the language is ancient and abandoned. They can make out enough however: The title is 'Unyielding Death'. They inform you that this robed man, was probably a cultist.
Enemies:
Weak: Zombies. They appear to be recent corpses, fully intact but brain dead. They move slowly and swing their arms wildly. They deal half your rank in damage each attack. It takes three rank D attacks to kill them. x7
Normal: Funcitoning Zombies. These recent corpses have had time to adjust and are more aware of how to dodge and strike accurately. They deal your rank in damage each attack. It takes four rank D attacks to kill them. x6
Strong: Runners. These zombies are insane, charging with surprising speed at whatever appears to be alive, raking their claws at you. They deal your rank in damage each post, and it’s almost impossible to avoid attacks once they reach you. It takes six rank D attacks to kill them. x3
Boss:
Black Robed Figure. The robes are black with red designs in them and a skull on the front and hood. The figure has no visible weapon but turns out to have magic.
Spell 1: Shadow Force. Releases three black spheres that deal your rank in damage. These spheres hone in on you, but the longer they last the smaller they become before vanishing entirely.
Spell 2: Grip of the Dead. Summon’s a skeleton hand that latches onto you and immobilizes you for a single post. The figure’s next spell automatically hits you full force the next post.
Spell 3: Drain Life. Deals half your rank in damage, and restores health equivalent to half rank D damage.
Spell 4: Undead Call. Brings one or two more monsters into the battle. Strength depends on which you have faced beforehand.
It takes twelve rank D hits to kill him.
Reward: 2,500 jewel

Aliarey had been told before that the scientist and herbalist would call on her again. She was really hoping they wouldn’t. How much worse could things get when she already removed weird plants and fought off infected animals from Beanstalk Village? Nonetheless, she would have felt slightly guilty ignoring the call when she was already that deep into the situation and had answered all of the others. She decided to get off her lazy ass and make the trip. When she arrived the scientist was nervous and seemed to be in a mild panic. Upon asking him what the hell was going on now, he begun to explain that the corruption in the forest had gotten way worse. It was now draining the lifeforce and mana of everything in it. The mission? Go further into the forest than she did the last time she was there and find the source. Destroy it if at all possible. Well that was easy, nothing was ever impossible! It was going to be a cakewalk!
As she stepped into the forest, Aliarey’s natural danger senses were going haywire. Things were way different from last time, and she felt very uncomfortable. As a just in case measure, she requipped into her normal battle armor and took hold of her normal pistols from their holsters. Slowly she moved, taking notice that not a single animal was nearby or even made a sound. Much time had passed and she came to a stop to pull out her iLac. It had been set to track her progress so she wouldn’t get lost in that damn forest of weirdness. According to it, she was somewhere near the center of it and still had not seen another moving creature. Then she heard it. A loud groan in the distance followed by the sounds of twigs snapping. Then another. And another. She couldn’t quite make out what it was so she used one of her requip spells to add on a magical eye visor that gave her different eye enhancements. Nothing on the heat tracker. Switching to night vision she clearly saw creatures that were very much human shaped…although they were wobbly when they walked. Her eye visor zoomed in and the mage cringed. Those people were most certainly not alive. With a cry of “dammit”, Aliarey began to shoot at them. Apparently that old tale of shooting zombies in the head was true.
Eventually the mage was surrounded by the zombies no matter how many she took out with her everyday pistols, and she sighed. She could have run, and her survival instincts were telling her to do so. The mission wasn’t over yet though, and she still had one very easy trick up her sleeve. Another old tale everyone knew besides the head shooting was how vulnerable zombies were to fire. With a smirk, Aliarey requipped her jetpack out of the personal storage and took to the air, completely making the more faster and intelligent zombies a non-issue. Down went the disc that formed into her Flame Turret and with a little bit more magic more copies of it were made. The horde of zombies was now in flames, and eventually defeated as she used her pistols to shoot from her safe zone for more added damage.
Staying in the air but still a bit low to the ground so she didn’t bump into tree branches, Aliarey continued on until she found some strange pillar. Before she could investigate further, a robed figure approached and attacked, unsurprised that someone had been sent to destroy the pillar. Some sort of hand came from the ground and tried to grab her leg, but she was a fast one to react and had her jetpack take her up higher to avoid it. That really REALLY was not a smart thing to do. Her turret discs were called forth and dropped to the ground where they formed and began to auto fire at the newly arrived enemy. The robed figure shot out some black sphere attack that destroyed a few of her turrets, but that only dug his grave further as they exploded the moment they were destroyed. Add in her own flame grenade and the guy was no longer standing. For someone in charge of guarding the pillar he wasn’t too strong.
Seeing the enemy now lying on the ground, Aliarey went over to his body to check for some clues. A coin that was identical to the one she had found on the stalker a few weeks ago, some weird mark that could have been a guild one for all she knew, and some sort of book. Interesting. ”Hey, you alive, tough guy?” She asked the body on the ground while poking him in the chest. A pained groan followed. Yep. Alive and breathing. Good. She was trying to keep her record clean and not have to kill people unless it was necessary. The poor sap was too weak for her to consider it. She tied him up to the pillar using some heavy duty rope that was in her magical personal storage. Then she tied him up further with magical wiring. Then she added a sort of magical lock to it all to keep it in place. He wasn’t getting out of it.
Aliarey stood there looking at the pillar with a serious and undecided expression. She could go back to her clients and inform them of everything, or she could take what she knew and give it to some of her buddies that were less than law abiding citizens. They’d likely pay some serious money for it or at least make a good trade. With a sigh, she had decided. She was the loyal sort and had a personal inner obligation to take everything she knew to her clients. As much as she hated to admit it, she got a good feeling every time she helped them out. Maybe being on the more legal side of things wasn’t so bad. Especially if she could keep kicking the asses of people like that robed runt and get a good job sticker from the Magic Council because of it. Nothing like a good excuse to cause some damage and not get in trouble for it…just as long as she never went overboard.
The requip mage returned to her clients and gave them the information she had as well as all the items she found on the robed figure. She was even so kind as to let those in charge of security within the village know about the tied up cultist she had captured. Another mission accomplished. A shame it was not the true end to what was really going on. That story is saved for another day.
