    I'M A CREATURE
of a culture that I create

She was still hesitating, hovering at the front of the tanuki's door. It had been maybe five... Ten minutes? Astrid wasn't sure, but for all she knew it had been and eternity. It felt like it anyway.
For the amount of time she had stood there outside, chewing nervously on the tips of her fingernails, the girl just couldn't find the courage to knock on the hollow, wooden door of the ace's room. Whenever she tried extending her arm out to tap it lightly, her arm would freeze in place, muscles tensing before she let out a deep sigh and brought her hand back down to her side in a defeated manner.
She was nervous. Of course, even she knew that. She knew it, but she didn't want to be. She didn't want to be, and yet, she continued to be. It was frustrating, to the point where she was starting to annoy herself.
Knock on the door, and call out. That's all she had to do.
But every time she went to knock, every time her arm would freeze, a flash of piercing red eyes would sneak into her mind, surprising her and causing her to stumbled backwards, heart pumping quickly as fear ran through her body. It took a few seconds of deep breathing before she could regain her composure to try again.
The eyes made her healing wounds tingle too, a whole other sensation she wasn't too happy to deal with either. She didn't want them to reopen, she had already gotten enough blood on Elyx's furniture. Anymore and she feared she'd leave a stain. Or worse, maybe even die.

God, this was stupid. She came here to talk this out with the youkai and not even half way through she was already chickening out. She felt terrible.
Apparently since the whole battle the ace had been locked up in her room, refusing to come out at all. Astrid had a hunch it was partly to do with her. After all, from the way her mentor described his lover she was actually pretty nice, not demonic at all. The fight was apparently very out of nature for her.
Perhaps she had caught her on a bad day.
Either way, she wanted to at least try and make things right. She wanted to know Izayuki... The real one. Not the bloodthirsty beast she saw that night. She wanted to know that she was in fact not out to get her... To know she wasn't bad.
But if so, why was it so hard for her to knock on the door? Such a simple action, and yet she couldn't bring herself to do it.

Dammit. She was a coward. Hiding again like always.
Why couldn't she do such a simple thing?
The musician clenched her fist tightly, biting her bottom lip roughly. Maybe she was just destined to fail at this kind of thing. After all, the last time she tried to finally take a stand for herself she ended up almost dying. Maybe, she was always meant to hide...

No. She was going to do this. No more hiding. She had almost died for heaven's sake. She needed to know this was just a misunderstanding. She would not let her own fear get in her way this time.
She was a Foss, a member of a family who took pride at taking stands against impossible odds. She intended to live up to the name.
Expression turning determined the girl took in a deep breath, letting it fill her chest before she exhaled.
Forcing her tensing muscles to go through with her mind's intended actions, using her knuckles to tap the door with slightly more force than she meant to use Astrid spoke in her usual calm manner.

    "Iza... Are you in there?"

Izayuki Hyoujin ♦ Black Rose ♦ B Rank

The presence had been out there for a while. As a canine, her senses were hundreds of times sharper than a human's, and as a yokai and slayer, even more so. The sound of the girl's breathing was audible to the tanuki's keen ears, and her smell became more prominent the closer she got to the door. She was not hard to identify, but Izayuki truly wished that she could not recognize who it was behind the door... why was she here now? To scold the yokai further? To shame her, tell her how much she was hated and should not even be there? Well, in more ways than one, it would be the right thing to do. Who wanted to have a monster lurking around the guild, anyhow?

Izayuki was lying on the top of her bed's comforter. For once, the bed was neatly made and the room fairly clean, with just a few things here and there. As the Ace of Stigma, the girl typically did not spend as much time in her room anymore. Instead, she was either cooped up in her office or out on some mission or job, without much time to just linger around as much as she used to. Thus, her room was blessed with her neglect, and stayed fairly tidy since the last time she had cleaned it. Now, however, she had banished herself to the room to be alone. She hated be alone. She feared being alone. To be in a room without any other presence around... the thought made her tremble. But right now, after what she had done, there was no better way to punish herself than to confine herself to her room. At least she could tolerate this, and not go crazy and mad again or have a panic attack... the door was slightly cracked, hardly noticeable, and she was in the guildhall, which was always full of people. And not only that, but Seika still visited her frequently and slept in the room at night. So it was cheating in a way, but anything more in exposure to her fear of loneliness would send her into a frightful frenzy, and that was the last thing she needed.

Finally... about damn time... Izayuki thought bitterly to herself as she heard Astrid's delicate knuckles tap against the wooden door to knock. Thanks to it being cracked, the door would begin to simply fall wide open as the light-haired girl spoke, making the kemonomimi-tanuki angle an ear towards her. She was lying facing the wall, with her back to the door, with her tail resting limply slightly off the bed. There was no blanket over her, and her arms and hands were comfortably in front of her. The answer to Astrid's question now had its answer; there was no need for her to speak. Nevertheless, Izayuki slowly and steadily used her arms to push upper body up, and turn over her right shoulder slightly to face the girl. Her eyes were that familiar shade of pink again, but still had a characteristic animal-like look to them, with the slightly slit-pupil and all.

As her gaze traveled up from the edge of the bed to meet Astrid's sapphire eyes, the sudden recollection of the memory of that night flashed briefly before Izayuki's eyes, making her visibly cringe. Blood. Lots of it. Sweet, sweet, precious, delicious blood being drained from the small frame of the girl, as the beast continued to torture her and make her scream out- relishing the cries of agony as one would a gentle melody.

She was a monster. And while her emotions and morals could allow her to regret, her body still craved to finish the meal. A shame... Izayuki shut her eyes tight for a few moments before gazing off to the side and downwards to re-open her eyes. She could not face her prey- no, her guildmate. Her lover's apprentice. A person who could have been a potential friend, but would now face the yokai and deliver yet another stream of verbal lashings. Astrid. The tanuki dared not to speak. She simply waited, still half-laying, but arms straight and keeping her propped up as she dared not to meet the girl's eyes again. What did this human have to say to the monster?

    I'M A CREATURE
of a culture that I create

Having not been aware that the door was already slightly cracked open Astrid retracted her hand quickly to her chest, watching the wooden door creak open the rest of the way. The creaking didn’t help the situation at all. It was a sound effect that belonged to a horror movie right before the killer jumped out to stab the protagonist. It was not a sound you wanted to hear when facing someone you feared.
The room was darker than the hallway. While the hallway of course had its artificial lighting to it, the ace’s room was only lit by the moon’s creamy white light seeping in through the window by the side of the room. Though now with the hallway’s light being able to enter the room she guessed it was a bit brighter in here than before. How long had the tanuki allowed herself to stay in such a thick coat of darkness? Surely it wasn’t good for one’s health to stay in a dimly lit room for so long.
Following the ray of the moon’s light as she peered into the clean room with bright blue eyes she looked around for any sign of the tanuki, having not gotten an audible answer from anyone inside the room, if there was even someone to be found.
After a heartbeat they landed upon the figure sitting on the bed.
    Pink.
The first thing that caught her attention were the pink hued optics staring at her. They were animal-like with the slightly slit pupil. But to some people they may also seem demonic.
Astrid caught herself shivering as she peered into those eyes, swearing that a flash of red had been mixed into the light color of the orbs for a split second. After a double take however, blinking her eyes to vanish the color, it appeared to just be her mind playing tricks on her. Maybe it was the lighting…

It turned out to be a staring match for a while between the two. At first Astrid had been caught off guard by the weird color her mind turned the tanuki’s eyes, but now for some reason her eyes continued to stare at her, like no matter how much she didn’t want to something was forcing her to keep their gazes interlocked, like she was frozen in place.
It only ended when Izayuki turned away, causing the musician to look away also, shaking her head. Man, that was weird. She hoped she didn’t make the ace feel uncomfortable or something with her strange gaze. That was the last thing she wanted to do.

Unsure if she should step inside the room Astrid stood beside the doorframe, both hands placed upon her chest together sheepishly.
It was slightly awkward now, the air was full of the thick atmosphere between the two. The only thing the musician could think to do now was to finally speak, hopefully breaking the silence.
For a while though, the silence continued, the words catching in her throat. What should she say? How should she say it? Maybe this was a bad time to say it. Would talking make the youkai mad at her?... Would she attack her again?
The girl began to tremble slightly, a shivering sensation filling her body.
Elyx would not be here this time to defend her, nor was her brother. She was alone.
She wanted to know Iza was good. No… She KNEW Iza was good. But if so… Why did she still frighten her? Why was she trembling just in the woman’s presence?
Swallowing her nerves Astrid took one step into the room, a hand placed on the doorframe to hold herself up, suddenly feeling slightly weak in her legs.

“M-Miss Izayuki? Is… This a good time to talk?” she finally managed to speak, though the words still held fear in them.

Perhaps it was instinct, or maybe something else, that allowed animals to easily smell fear. There was a distinct scent that adrenaline and cortisol, maybe, gave off, but what did Izayuki know about science? Nevertheless, there was an obvious scent filling the room as Astrid opened the door, and it was the smell of fear
Was it a good time to talk? Well, it was not a bad time to talk. Izayuki had nothing against it, but also failed to know what to expect. Did Astrid want to lecture her, or vow revenge? The yokai would not blame her if she did, and would just sit by to listen. But the girl seemed scared... in absolutely no condition to rant at the yokai. So, with that in mind, what did she want? An apology?

"Sure," Izayuki murmured gently, completely sitting up and putting her feet on the floor. Her tail swished lightly behind her, and she rested her hands slightly behind her against the bed to support her upper body as she leaned back a little. "I have stuff to say as well... but... you first," she said, suddenly avoiding Astrid's gaze again and flattening her ears in an uncertain manner, making her insecurity transparent. She typically would try to be the first to talk in a situation like this, but with the smaller girl, she knew better than to do so. Had she her way, Izayuki would have shifted entirely to her human form to seem at least a bit less threatening, if that was the word, to Astrid. Her emotions failed to allow her free control of her transformations, however, so she was stuck with her tanuki ears, tail, fangs, and claws no matter what form she wanted to assume.

And while you are sitting indoors
waiting for the storm to pass
I will be outside dancing in the rain

The musician held her upper arm with a weak grasp, rubbing it once awkwardly as her soft gaze stayed on the bakedanuki.
In all honesty she had hoped Izayuki would have been the one to go first. She hadn't known exactly what she was going to say when she thought to do visit the ace. A bit of a foolish thing to do, yes, but Astrid was infamous for being a bit of a ditz. She knew she wanted to not fear her anymore, but how she would go about doing that was the big question.
The mage took a few more steps forward until she was officially inside the dim room, a foot or two away from where the ace was positioned.
The tanuki looked away, but Astrid kept her gaze locked on her. She too had the urge to look away. Or really, shuffle quietly out of the room and go back home. But she was too far in to do so now. The girl may have the attention span of a chipmunk but she had determination that would put the highest ranked knights to shame.

More silence. She was still unsure of what to say. The more she thought upon it, the more her mind forced her to think of other things. Almost like a shutdown function. She wanted to say something, anything. But her mind began to race with so much useless and sudden thoughts that she had almost forgotten where she was.
The mage's suddenly glazed stare fixated itself upon Iza's ears. Now that she was closer they actually looked really fluffy, even when they were flattened against the god slayer's head. Like dog ears.
It was like in involuntary reaction. The violinist couldn't seem to help herself when she reached a small hand out and patted the girl upon her head, traveling to the silver colored ears and tugging on them gently, a smile taking over her face as she let out satisfied giggles. Something similar happened on one of her jobs a while back with Lucius and Kaisto. When given the chance to hold two of the puppies they had to find Astrid has entered a weird state of being. Not Black Astrid, for that was a side of her that rarely came out. This state made her faze out of reality, more so than she normally was, whenever she found something cute. May it be right in front of her or just in her mind. Nothing could faze or move her in this state, fixating her mind on solely the cute thing. It was even enough to block out fear.

"Fluffy~~" She breathed, eyes closing as she continued to press the tanuki's ear. Any sort of fear or negative feelings radiating from the girl before were now completely gone, replaced with a bright and cheerful child-like aura as she continued to make strange, happy sounds from her lips.

Izayuki Hyoujin ♦ Black Rose ♦ B Rank

The situation that unfolded was the last thing Izayuki had expected to happen. She had been counting on a blistering scolding or a demand for an apology from the smaller girl, but that was not what the Bakedanuki received. Pink eyes widened as she realized what Astrid was doing. Her first instinct was to pull away, as her eyes were very sensitive. She usually had little to no tolerance for anyone to get their fingers too close. After she had moved away and if they had persisted, Izayuki would go on to verbally warn them. If that failed, a warning bite typically did the trick. Continue doing it just to piss her off... well... that was a messy picture. Pissed yokai were rarely friendly.

However, Izayuki knew better than to move away from Astrid. Though she inwardly cringed as the girl tugged at her silver ears, she dared not make any negative expression that could potentially frighten the girl. The only one who could ever get away with touching her ears was Azalea, her little sister, or Elyx, the one she loved and valued most. She could trust them, and especially Elyx. Despite this truth, after what she had done to Astrid and her little brother, Lucius, Izayuki had no right to move away, complain, or deny her guildmate what she wanted. The one word to leave the blue-eyed girl's mouth was most unexpected... fluffy?

Well, it was no lie. The girl was actually... laughing? She was happy, and somehow, Izayuki had made her happy, even without intending to. The person she had hurt so terribly... was letting out noises of joy and obviously felt safe.
That fact and idea alone brought a small, awkward smile to the Bakedanuki's face. "You think that's fluffy? Just watch this~" Izayuki murmured softly with that warm smile, a sincerity and tenderness in her voice, that would hopefully contrast from her cold, insane words from that bloody night. Activating her yokai powers, Izayuki instantly shapeshifted, getting much smaller, much fluffier, and possibly a bit cuter, as she reverted back to her true form. What was left on the bed was naught but a small tanuki with light, silver fur and eager pink eyes. Whether Astrid was sitting or standing, Izayuki moved closer to her, hoping that her tanuki form would seem less threatening overall. "This is my true form."
Those words were hopefully enough. She could go on, but why waste her breath? That was her true form- no more reason for Astrid to be afraid, or to hate her, or to think of her as a monster, right?

And while you are sitting indoors
waiting for the storm to pass
I will be outside dancing in the rain

The girl did not stop when the ace transformed into her raccoon-dog form. In fact the now even cuter form made Astrid continue her patting rampage, seemingly fueled by the fluffy silver fur.
To get a better position the musician had fallen to the floor, her knees closed together as they held her up. She continued to laugh and make strange noises, tugging on the tanuki's ears and stroking her head for a couple of minutes straight, not losing any power or speed behind them at all.
Anyone who had known what happened a couple of nights ago would be quite shocked at the sight. The god slayer, who, had once held the the violinist up by her neck and stabbed her repeatedly, was now letting the same violinist pet her head and was trying with all her might to not scare the child in any way. It was not something you'd see so regularly.

The way Astrid was taken out of this state was unknown. Usually it happened by itself, the time in doing so varying from day to day. But when the weird state of being finally faded away Astrid had no recollection of what happened during the time she was out, her memories filled in with some sort of white space.
Blue optics regained their shine as they opened, the pets continuing, though slowly stopping as the seconds passed.
What was this? What happened? When had she fallen to her knees like this? What was this... fluffy feeling between her fingers?
Astrid's gaze focused on the animal in front of her, face frozen as she processed what was in front of her, head tilting in confusion. A dog... No wait, a raccoon... No. What was this creature in front of her? And why was it here? More importantly why was she petting it? Where did Izayuki go?

It took her a second to remember, Izayuki was this creature called a tanuki. Or, a raccoon-dog, as most people called it. A creature that, as the name implied, looked similar to both a raccoon and a dog.
This one was silver. Much like Izayuki herself... That could only mean one thing.
    ... Oh no.
Flashes of red printed itself once again onto the back of Astrid's eyes, her chest beginning to rise up and down roughly as her breathing quickened. She had just been petting the being that had almost killed her. The creature that had tried to kill both her and her brother.
She was touching her. She was close enough to smell her.
As blue eyes widened in fright she quickly retracted her hand to her chest, holding it with her other hand as if to make sure the ace wouldn't get any ideas and try to bite it. All the fright had returned, pouring back into the girl's body at an insane speed, becoming even worse now than before.
All she had wanted to do was solve their conflict, coming to the ice mage and talking it out nicely. But now she had done it. She had made her guildmate turn into her normal state and forced her petting upon her. She had worsened the situation. If Izayuki didn't hate her before she probably hated her now.

Having been frozen in place, staring at the silver tanuki with wide, unmoving optics Astrid was finally able to let a weak squeak push out from her throat.
Fearing the worst was yet to come as punishment from touching her slayer's ears she felt the bottom on her body become numb, making herself fall the rest of the way down, curling up in a ball on the floor with her knees just inches away from her chest. As if by instinct her hands covered her face, the logic behind it being that maybe if she couldn't see what was going on then maybe none of it was actually happening. It was a weird human thing. Even Astrid knew such things did not work, yet her body was now the one in control, her mind having began to shut down on her. She no longer had any say in the matter.
She started to sweat, goosebumps plucking at her skin as flashbacks of the dark night flashed into her mind. The red. The pink. It was all so horrifying, like nothing she had ever experienced before. And now she feared it was going to happen again, all because she couldn't keep her hands to herself.
"I-I'm s-sorry!" she choked out, her words shaking as the inside of her chest rattled with her panic.
"Please, don't hurt me... Not again." All she could think to do was beg. Beg the youkai to not take her life. Her pleas began to run together under her breath, her eyes glazed over with tears and fixated on the air in front of her. She was catatonic.
