    "This is crap!" Calico wailed as he slumped over the edge of a ferry at sea. "I just got lifetime pass for free train rides and I don't even get to use it yet!" Calico almost whimpered as he checked his pocket for the special pass he had received from the owner of Oshibana Railways. The gift from that tubby old man was one bequeathed to Calico after he knocked around the hugs extorting him for money. While he had hoped to use the pass on his next job, he was instead forced to take a ferry out to an island in the middle of nowhere. A dumber part of him hoped that this island he was heading off to had a train.

    "At least I get to ride with you... Caja?" Calico turned to see his cat sitting on the deck next to him with wet fur and a small fish in its mouth. "W-where did you get that fish!?" It looked as if his cat had jumped into the sea, caught fish, and came back on board, but that would have been impossible since... it's a cat. It was truly a strange sight.

    "I think I might be going mad."

    The ferry finally docked at the island in the early morning just as the sun was beginning to rise. No one but Calico and Caja got on or off. There wasn't even a person at the docks, or a town for that matter. It was just a set of wooden docks, an old and decaying wooden shack, and the surrounding forest. Calico walked up to the dirt ground and looked around at his totally uninhabited surroundings. From a single glance, you'd imagine the island had only just been discovered. The Fairy Tail mage shrugged it off though and guessed it to be the rumors of demons that kept people from even approaching.

    "Now let's see where we're heading." Calico reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a piece of paper. The paper was more of a map, one given to him by his guild master to find the demons' secluded village within the thick forest. Fairy Tail was apparently the only group aware of the Galuna Island demons' village location. Calico didn't know the story of the two factions' relationship, but Fairy Tail must have done something to gain the trust of a group so dedicated to their own solitude.

    To the best of his ability, Calico tried to follow the map's directions through the green maze of a jungle. Caja followed on foot just behind him and looked to be having much more fun in the wild than Calico. The cat would jump from rock to rock, try to catch some bugs, and even caught a tiny garden snake. When he ran up to Calico's leg and rubbing the serpent against him, Calico snapped at the fur ball with, "Caja, put that down or-!" Calico stopped dead in his tracks as he felt something big staring right at him from the rock in front of him. He slowly raised his head up from Caja and looked past his ap to see a large feline resting on the large stone in his path: a panther.

    "Cat. Big cat." Calico stood absolutely still with a somber expression. The panther grumbled with its mouth closed and stood up in a jump-ready position. It descended from the large rock and hopped onto the dirt ground and began circling Calico and Caja. The requip mage stood still as a statue, not out of fear but in homage of a rumor he heard that felines only attack if you run... or was that canines?

    When the panther finally made it's move, his yellow eyes shifted to the smaller cat. It walked up slowly and... took Caja. It placed its teeth around the back of Caja's neck like a mother cat and ran off through some bushes.

    "Did it... did it just steal my cat?" Calico, like any reasonable person, had to take a good pause to comprehend what just happened. His cat was just catnapped by a larger cat. "I'm coming Caja!" He stuffed the map back into his jacket and dashed through the bushes after the panther. He jumped over fallen trees, skipped passed a series of streams, and even contemplated swing along some vines like a wild man. The various thorns and thickets in the jungle were scraping his skin and clothes all the while, leaving tiny blood droplets to slide down his skin.

    When he reached a clearing between a mass of tower-sized trees, he looked around for any sign of disruption. Various birds shook the tree leaves, some monkeys broke a branch, and a mole of some kind dashed across the grass, but there was no panther to be found. Neither was there a path out to be found.

    Calico had lost his cat as well as his place in the jungle.

    A scream could be heard echoing through the jungle. The sound of it ensured that it probably wasn't Caja (that's either a good thing or a bad thing).

    "Help! Heeelllp! HEEEELLLLP!" Through one of the bushes, a tribal-dressed blue man with horns protruding from his head came running out into the clearance. His entire sight was laughable but Calico concluded he was probably one of the demon natives given his "abnormalities" coupled with his humanoid figure. As he was running across the grass with a terrified expression, a mass of sweat and tears were running down his face as if he had been running all day from his nightmare.

    Calico had a look of curiosity, although he was giggling at the sight on the inside, as the demon man ran right into him. Calico stood as still as a statue while the demon was knocked back by his fortitude. The demon sniveled for a moment and then got on his knees to beg. "Please! Please, help me! They're coming for me!" Calico scratched his head and raised his eyebrows as if he were talking with a crazy person.

    "Who's coming for you?" Calico had a weird feeling it involved a panther. Just a hunch though.

    The demon raised an arm and pointed toward the bushes he himself had emerged from. "Kosovo of Pergrande!"

    A slender man with a long green overcoat and red beret walked after of the bushes, a whip winded around his neck like a hangman's noose. He had a sour look on his face, like he had been having nothing but a bad day from the get-go. He raised a gloved finger at the panicking demon and said, "I hope you're not planning to steal my kill." Calico turned his attention back toward the demon crying and walloping on the ground. Calico would pity the creature would it not be a disservice.

    "I'm afraid I'm not allowed to kill anymore."

    Kosovo gave him a more distorted look than his original sour face. He wasn't sure what to make of Calico's answer but shrugged it off and unwrapped his whip from his upper body. "Your loss. The king of Pergrande has a bounty on the demon's of the island. You could make a fortune from it." Kosovo cracked his whip in the air once and earned a whimper from the demon.

    "I think I might stuff you when I'm done, monster." The man flicked his wrist and the whip went flying toward the demon.

    Cling! Calico reached forward and caught the whip's sharp metal tip with his own metal gauntlet. Calico presented Kosovo with a challenging smile and told him, "I can't let you kill either. The demons of this island are under the protection of Fairy Tail."

    "Fairy Tail? Oh! I've heard of you guys..." Kosovo smiled with a nasty look in his eyes before pulling his own hand back. There was a loud clinking noise as the sharp point on his whip sliced through the metal of Calico's gauntlets and drew a little a blood with it. The aging demon hunter then retracted his whip in a swift and graceful motion. "If you're with one of the "great" wizard guilds of Fiore, you must be a mage, eh? Well, let me show you skill that no amount of magic can pull off."

    Kosovo snapped his whip to his far right in a swiping motion, causing the it to slice clean through a nearby tree. The tree fell down onto another tree with a series of crackling sounds. "And that's a tree. Just imagine what it could do to person's body." Kosovo cackled, the demon whimpered, and Calico only stared at the demon hunter.

    The air ripple once more as magical energy fluctuated through the space around Calico. There was a momentary glow around his body until it subsided and a set of plate armor appeared all over his body with a jousting lance in his right hand. Kosovo grew interested immediately in his new opponent, especially after he raised his lance up at the man. A glow ball orange-red ball of energy formed at the tip of the lance and when firing off at Kosovo.

    "Cheap trick." Kosovo swung his whip out and managed to hit the ball in midair with the tip of his whip, causing a large spherical explosion that knocked a bunch of leaves and twigs out of the clearance. "Oi, my turn!" The demon hunter sent his whip out toward Calico. The weapon's movements were sporadic enough that the requip mage had trouble keeping his eyes on it. Before he knew it, Calico's lance was being gripped by the whip and pulled from his own grip. Kosovo pulled his whip back and managed to pull the lance with it.

    When the lance made it to Kosovo, he jerked his wrist against and allowed the whip to let go of the lance, causing it to land several feet behind Kosovo.

    "I'd say the next round's in my favor." Kosovo began winding up his whip in preparation of the next attacks. Calico's only preparation was the snap of his fingers... boom! The lance several feet behind Kosovo exploded and sent him forward by a couple yards. To top it off, the one of the nearby skinny trees had been caught in the attack and toppled right over on the unfortunate demon hunter. As Kosovo tried to get up from his fall, the tree landed on his back and pushed back into the ground.

    "Damn." Kosovo dropped his whip and forced himself out from under the tree while accompanied by a series of his own grunts and curses. When he finally made it out form under the tree, he searched around in a disoriented way for his whip as well as Calico. "Now where did you go...?" In just a single turn, a metal fist went right into Kosovo's sour face followed by a tackle and another series of flails by Calico.

    In less than a minute, Calico got off of the demon hunter and forced his own armor to disappear. The Fairy Tail mage looked over to the blue demon and waved him over. "I think... he's done," Calico panted. The demon looked over and approached to Kosovo's black and blue face.

    Later that afternoon, the blue demon escorted Calico to the demon village. The settlement resembled something of a fortress as it had a wall of sharped wooden spikes protecting, though Calico doubted it would do much to stop Pergrande demon hunters. The inside was much less threatening than the outside. There various demons of different shapes and colors enjoying the peacefulness of their humble little village. It had even appeared that the demons of the village had been expecting a Fairy Tail mage for several days since a good number of them approached, if not crowded, Calico with tiny gifts. Most of them were hand-made from various hunted animals. There was a doll made from bones, a shirt made from panther fur, and so on.

    While he was staying at the village, the oddest sight had awaited him last: the villagers had formed a strange shrine to worship their new god... "Caja!?" The demons had apparently found the little cat running about in the jungle with a panther. They killed the panther of course but took the small cat a good omen and decided to bring him back. One thing led to another and the calico cat became a god among demons.

    Calico was given just a few hours to rest. He couldn't afford to wait around since it was very crucial that the village's location was never found. To put it simply, this meant that Calico had to find the Pergrande hunters before they found the village. While he did rest, however, he was given all sorts of luxuries to keep his strength up. The villagers prepared Calico (as well as Caja) a nice dinner form the domestic chickens they raised and let him relax in some "relaxation chamber" that resembled a Turkish's royal's house. Near the end of this rest period, Calico even worked out and did some stretches to prepare him for the inevitable battle against the Pergrande hunters.

    When the time came to leave the village, Calico was called into the village chieftain's hut and given all the information he'd need. The Pergrande hunters had apparently sat up camp just several miles to the north next to a river. The demon scouts who had been sent to spy on them believed there were only four of them, with the leader among them being pretty easy to identify among them. They made special note of the leader's "vicious" look.

    Calico reluctantly let Caja stay at the village at the chieftain's request. He wanted to bring the cat along with him since his furry companion was always there for "moral support." Still, Calico was sure Caja would enjoy the ridiculous pampering he'd receive while his master away.

    The village chieftain, named Psipto, ordered the group of scouts that had returned to escort Calico to the Pergrande hunters' camp. The idea was to simply take the Fairy Tail mage there, allow him to do his duty while the scouts hid and waited, and return by nightfall. It turned out the hard part of that plan was actually getting to the camp since Calico had trouble keeping up with the scouts, who all jumped from tree to tree like they were bred to be acrobatics. The bulky requip mage did not even bother to follow them through the trees and instead decided to just run along the jungle floor.

    "Come on, slowpoke!" Calico smiled up into the trees but was dying on the inside form exhaustion. They made jungle maneuvering look easy, and it wasn't simple trying to keep up with people who could just jump and climb over every obstacle in their way.

    The scouts stopped and waited at a river for Calico who was panting and trying catch his breath by the time he made it to them. "The camp is just up the river. Do you know what you're going to do?"

    Calico nodded and told them, "I was thinking of walking right up to them and blowing their camp apart."

    "That sounds... incredibly stupid. Perhaps you should try for something sneakier. There are a couple of trees around there camp that you could probably-"

    "No. We in Fairy Tail like a challenge," he chuckled, walking past the doubtful scouts who were probably wandering in advance what he would look like in a coffin. As the requip mage was walking along the river, summoned forth his chainmail armor and his jousting lance, which was preceded by the usual glows and ripples in the air. He believed that combo would be best for getting the job done (the job being "blow their camp apart.")

    The camp appeared pretty basic. It had four tents, a campfire, some weapon racks, and some seats here and there. Unfortunately, Calico could only spot three figures around the campfire. None of the three there stood out, leading the Fairy Tail mage to believe the leader was off somewhere.

    Shockingly enough, the three men in the camp had an easy time spotting the man walking up on them. "You there! What do you want!?"

    Calico raised his lance up at them and said, "For you to leave. The demons only want to live in peace." Energy accumulated at the tip of Calico's lance and formed a bright red-orange glowing ball. The glowing ball spun and pushed around any leaves and surrounding dust before Calico shot the ball toward the center of the camp. The ball went flying with a whoosh. Two of the Pergrande knights managed to get out of the way and figured they were safe enough. The ball, however, hit of one of hit one of the three right in the chest and erupted into an explosion. The blast was powerful enough that it managed to knock the two other knights several feet back along with much of the camp. Wooden chunks from the campfire and pieces of the tents were completely shredded and flew off dangerously so.

    The man that had been hit directly did survive. His own chainmail armor managed to take in the lethal amount of damage, but the damage was bad enough that he was left on the ground with blood soaking his chest.

    The two other knights regained their composure and quickly secured their shields and swords from the toppled weapons' rack. Recalling their knight training, each one raised his shield up front and held his sword to the sword. One slowly approach Calico from his right while the other approached from his left. "An offensive defense... it's smart... but it's not something that will work against me." As both knights closed the gap between them and their target, Calico held his arms up as if he were daring them to come at him. When they came within striking range, the men drew their sword back farther and then swung ahead and tried to strike the mage down.

    before the metal of their blades could hit, Calico's body glowed for a brief moment before a rush of energy in the form of an explosion swirled from him. The damage was minimal, but the blast managed to keep their blades at bay and even stunned the knights momentarily. Calico took the opportunity and raised his lance up toward the disoriented knight on his left. In one charge, the requp mage rammed his lance into the knight's shield and sent him to the ground on his back.

    Before Calico could land a finishing blow against the fallen knight, the second regained his composure and raised his shield for a charge attack. Without thinking it through, Calico attempted something he had never done before. He raised his lance up and charged his Lance Rocket ability just as it made contact with the shield. The results were grand. The explosion from the tip of the lance completely shattered the shattered the shield and blew the knight several meters back. Even Calico had sustained some damage from the close blast, with much of his armor blackened by soot and part of his face lightly burned on one side.

    "I probably shouldn't do that too much," he panted, followed by a cough of soot. The grumbling of the other knight reminded him he still had one last opponent. Calico moved his foot to the side and kicked the shield away, exposing the knight's chest. He then followed up by stomping directly on the top part of the knight's chest, forcing blood up from his mouth and a quick passing out from the sudden pressure on his chest cavity's organs.

    Calico wiped some of the soot from his hair and sighed, "Now I just need to find the man behind all this."

    "You found him." Calico could hear a pistol cocking from behind just as his own weapon and armor disappeared into nothingness. It's all he needed to hear to know there was gun pointed right at him.

    He sneaked up right on me!? From the length of the voice and cocking sound, Calico figured he stood several feet away. He must have seen me use a close range explosion earlier and decided to keep his distance.

    "Start walking." The voice sounded like it was from a middle-aged man.

    "Sure thing," Calico said with a cheerful tone, acting as if he had it all under control. In honesty, however, he was completely out of ideas. He felt certain the man could pull the trigger a lot faster than he could summon his gear and running was just out of the question.

    The man escorted Calico through a path into the jungle, making for at least a ten minute walk.

    "So, uh, what's your name?"

    "Etnad. Yours?"

    "Calico."

    "Nice name. It'll look good in your obituary."

    When they came to the end of their walk, Calico was standing before a large hole in the ground. It was about five meters in diameter and, as far as calico could tell, it didn't have a bottom.

    "For days, we've been finding lone demons out in the woods. We'd always catch them and interrogate them for the village's location. When it became apparent that none of them would crack, we put a quick end to them and threw them in that hole. You don't strike me as the type who'd tell me what I want either, which means your going in right with them."

    Calico looked down in the dark pit and took a deep breath. "Very well." He stretched his arms out and jumped in as if he were sky-diving. Etnad expressed his shock and raised his pistol. A glow in the pit came followed by a series of explosions. Calico emerged from the pit, propelled by explosions under him while wearing his chainmail armor and wielding its matching cleaver. And finally, Calico got to see what the Pergrande leader's face looked like...

    "I'm ready for you, heathen." Etnad fired his gun rapidly. As Calico landed on the ground about eight meters from Etnid, he threw his cleaver. Three bullets hit Calico in the stomach, the cleaver hit Etnad's hand.

    "Oh look who got me with his little magic trick." Etnad dropped his gun and held up his hand. He was missing three of his fingers but he didn't look like he was in the least bit of pain. Calico just clenched his stomach with a hand and tried to maintain his serene composure through the pain.

    Etnad showed the ace in his sleeve: a second gun. He pulled it from its holster from his undamaged hand and shot at Calico as fast as he could aim. Although he was caught off guard and injured, Calico managed to evade the next hail of bullets by generating more explosions under his feet. Calico spotted a large boulder in has path propelled himself behind in hopes of using it as cover. As the injured mage grasped his hurt stomach, the sound of bullets ricocheting off the large rock could be heard. Then, utter silence.

    Is he reloading? Calico slowly peaked his head over the large rock and instead caught the sight of Etnad running straight for him with a greatsword in his uninjured hand. The requip mage had a bad feeling that he life depended on getting away from the rock. And he was right. As Calico jumped back, the sword sliced through the boulder with a clean cut.

    "It's a shame I don't have both my hands in working condition... I could cause a lot more destruction." Etnad rested his greatsword over his shoulder and smirked, and then frowned. "What are you doing?"

    Calico stretched one of his arms and held his hand behind his back. "When I get back to the guild hall, the fellas are going to want me to tell them how my job went. If I tell them I fought an opponent who can only use one hand, they'll probably laugh at me. I figured it'll be more of an honorable story if I tell them I only used one of my hands too."

    "Tch. You're throwing away your only advantage."

    There was no way for Calico to get to his thrown cleaver. He was injured in the stomach and he was determined to use only a single hand. If this were a game, it'd be "very hard" mode.

    Etnad lunged forward and swung his sword at Calico, who focused entirely on dodging. The motion was repeated for some time as Calico continuously jumped back to get out of reach while Etnad practically destroyed the forest. Even with just one hand, Etnad didn't seem to have much trouble swinging his greatsword. Calico even got the back-of-the-head feeling that his oppoent was holding back.

    And he was right. "I have you now." As Etnad missed another swing with his sword, he quickly increased his speed and swung back again. The tip of the blade sliced horizontally along Calico's stomach. The Fairy Tail mage groaned in pain as blood fell from his stomach (as well as a trickle down the corner of his mouth).

    Calico jumped back once more and, to his surprise, Etnad kept his distance. It was as if he were watching an injured bird trying to flutter away. "It's painful, yeah? It's what you Fiore people get for letting so many races in. You interbreed... become weak... and die like bugs. A disgusting bunch of people."

    Through his heavy breathing, Calico managed the words, "I don't... care... about Fiore. The demons... they're under Fairy Tail's protection... I have to stop you..."

    "It's over." Etnad pointed his blade at Calico, signalling the attack to come.

    "Noo... I'm not allowed to fail. I'm bound by duty to succeed." Calico raised his hand up to his forehead and brushed his Fairy Tail crest. In that moment, glitter devoured his hand. Magically, a giant greatsword appeared in his hand. "Those who remain faithful to the Fairy Law reap their reward through this sword, the Blade of Faeries." Calico raised the blade up and felt amazed about how light it was. He was told about the blade but honestly had no idea how to use it. He would just have to wing it.

    "Just more cheap magic tricks." Etnad lunged forward and swung his blade vertically from above. Calico rushed forward to meet him and swung horizontally from the left. The next several seconds went by slowly. Their blades collided and Etnad's sword shattered like glass. Calico's sword continued forward uninhibited, like it hadn't even hit anything, and sliced into his shoulder. It didn't leave behind a small scrap but an entire gap in Etnad's shoulder. Etnad's face was one of disbelief and pure agony. He dropped the blade of his broken blade and staggered backward before falling to the ground on his back.

    "You... you didn't put your full force behind your attack. Gh!" The defeated Etnad began coughing up blood.

    "If I had, I might have cut you in half." The Blade of Faeries began dissipating into glitter.

    "Damn you!" he snapped. He coughed another spout of blood before letting his eyes slowly close.

    "Don't come back to this island. Ever." Calico clenched his stomach with his hand and began the slow, tedious walk back to the village.
