    This wasn’t Sparta so this could only be one thing: madness. Through the desert the lone woman trekked all for this ridiculous trouble over a flimsy thing containing her photo and allowing passage into other countries? Where the hell was Mao going to go anyway? Traveling outside of the floating castle that was the Sabertooth guild hall was, in various rights, a pain and greatly so if she had to pass through that wretched desert. ’Not sure why I couldn’t have gone to Hargeon anyways.’ Due to a warning about a high volume of people traveling there to gain the same item, multiple people pushed Mao towards Rose Garden instead in the hopes of her chances being a smidgen better.

    ’Maybe they plan to ship me out of the country at first notice?’ Like pushing a baby bird from the nest? ’Then again I think it’s something better to have rather than not I suppose. Traveling wouldn’t be the worst thing,’ the girl reasoned out as she shuffled forward a little, the line moving at a crawl. Up above the sun beat down on the long line harshly, though Mao remained fine thanks to her airy clothing, the cotton shawl obscuring her face and reaching down far enough to cover a fair portion of her tail as the rest curled under to remain in the shadows. Loose pants reached a little past her light leather boots, sleeves of the top layer shirt billowing out yet offering protection all the same. It was one of the rare times she chose to wear something off white, the rest of the colors light, pastel shades compared to the usual love of darker colors.

    Something tugged at the hem of her shawl, green eyes turning down to meet sparkling blue ones filled with suspicious hope and barely hidden glee. ’Just what is she hoping for?’ “Yes, how may I help you?” The words came hesitantly, any experiences with children involving distant observation. Actually speaking to one felt a little daunting however because they could cry at a moment’s notice due to the strangest of provocations at times. What if she said the wrong thing? Then they’d all be suggested to the wailing of an inconsolable child.

    ”Are you a fortune teller?” that tiny, squeaky voice asked. Impossibly her eyes widened and Mao realized that denying such claims would result in her horrific versions. On the plus side it might kill some time…

    ”Why…yes child, I am…”

    It’d been intended to merely entertain the little girl so she wouldn’t cry and kill a few minutes, but somehow…someway, Mao turned into an attraction in the middle of this ridiculous line. When she “foretold” the girl would run into a spot of good luck and she quickly found a forgotten five jewels on the ground people just assumed she could, in fact, somehow see the future. It became so bad and she feared a riot so much that Mao even reshaped one of her emeralds into a spherical form to further the image when multiple people inquired about their immediate or far future fortunes.

    On the brighter side someone fetched a foldable chair for her, allowing the woman to balance the “crystal ball” on her lap with only the slight annoyance of shuffling it every so often. It was hard though because she really wanted to give everyone a wonderful fortune, but if everything came out like sunshine and rainbows then they might get violent so instead Mao tried to splice in warnings so that people might be able to avoid possible misfortune rather than outright damning anyone.

    ’I’m not sure people are here for passports anymore.’ Thanks to how low the shawl could hang, nobody could glimpse the increasing worry and panic on the woman’s face as a thick crowd formed around her. Moving the chair down the line ceased being an option and another person produced a portable table…they’d even decorated it with a blanket and someone found a dish to balance the crystal ball on rather than hiding it in her lap. ’It’s not like they can see anything…I guess they merely like the belief they might catch sight of something though?’ Given the human nature she wouldn’t be surprised if they merely liked staring into the beautiful gem.

    ”All right what’s going on here?!” a voice broke through the crowd, and soon she saw a figure pushing people aside. Judging from his appearance he must’ve been a Rune Knight – others slowly manifesting behind him in some attempt to disperse the crowd.

    An unseen voice piped up from somewhere in the crowd, ”We’re getting our fortunes told!”

    ”Fortunes?!” Incredulously the man turned his annoyed gaze on Mao.

    Jumping she waved her hands, fretting about placating the man, ”I-I’m sorry! I just wanted a passport and then…things…happened…” Oh gods how could she explain this?!

    A menacing aura covered him as he grabbed her by the arm and forced her to the front of the line – nonexistent now as people chose to crowd around the makeshift booth instead – and lightly pushed her towards the table, ”Then get it and stop causing a scene here. We have a lot of people eager for passports and you’re causing a disturbance!”

    ’That’s all I wanted,’ she mentally cried, filling out the form, getting her photo snapped, and then the item shoved into her hands. Well, she had what she came for at least.
