Personality:
Their orphanage was a happy place. Like all the other orphans, Mairin grew up surrounded by kindness and simplicity that she eventually adapted into her personality. She doesn't bother too much on the negative side of things, and leans on optimism more than anything. Her master considers her a fool, which is true because she strongly denies the ultimate reality of things and often sugar-coats the bad stuff to make it seem attracting -for example, she considers 'death' as an invitation to a better place instead, and does not mourn or grieve when a person dies. Mairin strongly upholds her values and views on life, like the weight of courage and significance of true love. So much that they become her driving point in her life, devoid of parental care. What her master adores about the blue-haired, bright-eyed little Mary was how she casually shines in the darkness with her morals and childish beliefs, as if she was meant to do so. She attracts both good things and bad things, and accepts them with all her heart. She doesn't stray from her focal point, she pushes towards a future she thinks she has, she does things her own way without pride or prejudice. She ceases to dim her valiant spirit, regardless of what people think or say or do or desire, she merely lives on in her own flow of things. That's why her master named her Mairin. The star of the sea.
And she wasn't wrong in her decision. Mairin was a very brave child, she was open to a lot of things, ready to learn from every to and fro of her master's right hand. She learned fairly quickly thanks to her enthusiasm. Accordingly to her master's words, Mairin begins the battle with a smile, and to seal the deal, she shouts words of encouragement with her sword point first into the sun. She prefers agile and strategic attacks over raw power, and gains her fighting edge over larger, bulkier enemies with her fair stealth and flexibility. Her driving force is what she regularly mumbles in her head: "I have a future."
The stranger things she does in battle is how she, before ending a life, valiantly sings parts or words of ancient farewell songs, for the dead who are about to shift from earth to providence. She claims it helps ease the pain of her victims, and she senses that they have found peace at her hands. Her master belittles those foolish ideas, but nonetheless lets her keep them as her own boost of morale.
She has her cheeky ways, and her too dramatic ways, but she gets things done, and that's what counts.
Her master believes that due to the fact that she has not been under strict management, she willingly follows orders and never once complained unless it humiliated her in some sort of humorous way. It's probably because of how freely she does her tasks and how decisive and genuine she is when it comes to ideas and performance. More often than not is she seen solving a problem in a more domestic way rather than the brutal force way, and that too, gives her enough resolute as a leader. She doesn't like to stress herself out, and because of her equality driven prospect, she doesn't want to stress others out too. She performs well around people, and is very keen to sparking up random things regardless of the point of time or location or state of awkwardness.
Likes:
- Music
- Seafood
- The Sea
- The summer months
- A natural born admirer for all things musical and lyrical, Mairin accepted her master's request to become her apprentice excitedly because of the fact that she was an orchestra conductor and violinist. Although her only forte is her voice, she loves all the instruments and how they blend together in harmony with the right notes. If she had the time, she'd master all the instruments and play them all until she grew wrinkly and forgotten.
- She has a large appetite for seafood. Her master thinks it's heaven's humorous curse on the girl, along with giving her hair as blue as the sky and sea that made her stand out so sorely. But no matter what her master accounts to, she will never forget the taste of the sea on her palette courtesy of those kinds of dishes. It's her kind of comfort food.
- Parts of her early memories are blue waves, salty winds, and dry sand stuck between her toes. She has a random fondness for the sea, and it's not rooted from her name. In fact, Mairin has no idea what her name means. But she forever adores the sea, if she could, she'd be wed before the seaside sunset in her best dress or floated off in her simplest shroud towards the horizon. That's how she views those important events. That's how much she wishes to have her best memories to be with the ocean.
- The best time to visit the seaside, as they name it.
Dislikes:
- The winter months
- Nuts
- Raisins
- When her master runs out of sugar
- She prefers snuggling beside a fire over shivering, surrounded by ice and snow. Mairin celebrates her birthday indoors with a warm blanket and a large container of something hot for her to repeatedly pour into her cup on that day.
- Mary is a child who picks out her peanuts one by one out of her muffin when it's muffin-day at the orphanage. But she is strangely drawn to peanut butter sandwiches. Mairin is the girl who refuses to chew on wild nuts on her hikes with her master, and brings an entire loaf with a peanut butter jar for her snack instead. She just doesn't like them that way.
- Mairin was always terrified of the raisins in her master's raisin breads and cinnamon buns. It gave her bad impressions of wrinkles and dryness that she'd rather not touch or become. So her breads are plain, and her buns are just cinnamon and cream. She's happy with just that, and content with never seeing a horrid raisin ever again. Grapes are fine.
- She is sent to the store, and Meirin hates the old lady that always has to shout whenever she goes to buy sugar. Every visit ends with her on her dusty couch and the woman chattering off on how sugar was not made easy back in her day and....it just drags on until her master has to come get her before dinner. Meirin is convinced that it's her master's form of humiliating humor whenever she forgets something.
Motivations:
- The company of her friends
- Meirin puts her friends and whatever family she considers to be at a daring standpoint, as part of her prime motivation in life. It keeps the shadows of the world at bay, keeps her heart at ease.
- She regularly reminds herself of the future the heavens have planned out for her, and how it's out there, waiting for her, creased and ironed neatly to fit her perfectly. She's always so insistent on chasing her future, that she regularly preaches it to the sad and lonely people she meets, like a form of daily ritual.
- Her master frequently emphasizes the importance of justice. And whether or not it is merciless or gentle, justice is justice. With courage on her mind, she thinks justice is the product. And therefor, even if she had to kill someone, if it was in the name of justice, she'll consider it a job well done.
Fears:
- Failure to complete her master's requests
- It's not something like a fear of failure itself. But rather, when her master doesn't get what she wants, she'll have no dinner that day, or worse, she'll be forced to go sit with the old lady at the sugar store for two days total, along with the brute task of carrying 50 bags of sugar up a steep mountain climb.
- Nothing says terror like being buried before her death. It horrifies her. So she sleeps on her side, and avoids coffin parlors as much as possible.
- Mairin fights not just for justice or for the peace of her target. But she fights to keep herself alive, against all odds. She believes that she hasn't served her purpose until she's found that future she longs for.
General Appearance
Height: 5'2 (quite short for her age)
Weight: 45 kg
Hair: Her hair is a light hue of blue, leaning more towards a skyish blue. She rarely grows it long enough to reach her shoulders, and favors musical clips or small cute accents like braids and flowers as a formal touch.
Eyes: A shade darker than her hair, deep as the sea, but bright as the starry sky.
Skin Tone: Quite light, but not too pale.
Appearance:
Her common apprentice outfit is a strapless upper with ruffles streaming across the top, a blue chest region separated from the button-up, white post-chest region. It has gold finishings lining particular angles. She wears two pairs of gloves: one long, blue one that goes under the slightly large white ones. There are bands on her biceps that serve as an illusional kind of strapping. Her skirt is a diagonal cut blue and white material with darker blue flaps jutting out from underneath her upper clothing. Her legs are protected by long and coincidentally warm (white) stockings. She normally wears blue ankle boots with short heels as to comply with fashion and function. As a final touch, she wears a blinding white cape that binds at a her neck in a mandarin neckline.
On cold winter days, when she rarely goes out, she'll wear a thick coat and a long blue scarf with high boots and extra thick pants.
