Completed The trying of Wine (Job, Solo)

Walking along the busy streets of the Rose Garden Kyrin couldn’t help but let out a long sigh. The last time he was here he fought with Kaleb against an ex-boyfriend who had a grudge against his girlfriend. And he chose to do it on her wedding. And before that he helped with the annual blood drive; entertaining people and trying to keep them happy. He gave a slight smile to himself as the next thought came to him. Both times were to spill blood. It was a morbid thought, but nonetheless true.

This time there would be no blood shedding, or at least he hoped not. This time he was here to taste wine. The sweet texture of red wine as it flows over his tongue. The dry flavor of white wine as golden as honey. A slight inward smile tugged at his mind. He had no idea what he was talking about. Besides beer from the guild he never really drank anything alcoholic. Why he chose this job was a mystery.

Well maybe not quite a mystery. He just wanted to try it, even though he had no idea what he was doing. With the inward smile he turned right at the main square. As he wove his way around the various people he thought if any of them knew anything about wine. Maybe he could ask one to accompany him, but he shook the idea out of his head. This was a guild job, and not one to involve non-guild members. He just had to do it.

The restaurant that he was looking for was on the right side of the street. The Goose is Cooked. I wonder how long it took the owner to come up with that one. With a sigh on his lips and a shake of his head he went in.

The owner of the restraint was also the one who sent the request for the wine tasting. He said he had been working on a wine that truly represents The Cooked Goose, so one that went well with their signature dish. ”I tried a couple white wines to begin with, mainly because everyone tells me a fruity red would be best. But I’ve always been one to push the limits.” Kyrin just nodded, not really sure what to say. And it was probably a good thing too because he knew if he said anything it would just prove his ignorance.

The owner seemed to take it as agreement as he had a serving of his signature meal brought out. And it was indeed a cooked goose with steamed peas and carrots with a side of mashed potatoes. The owner produced a wine bottle filled with a reddish liquid that seemed to have a slight glow emanating from inside. He took a glass from a waiter and filled it about halfway. The glow showed within the glass as well.

With what he hoped was a relaxed smile Kyrin cut a piece of the goose and took a bite. It was a bit gamey, but it was obvious why they made it the signature dish and named the restaurant after it. It was good. Then he took a small sip of the wine. He knew that the wine needed to be sipped at least. It was good as well, and left a pleasing taste on his tongue as he took another bite of meat.  He continued through the meal quietly while the owner and the rest of the staff watched in earnest.

When he had finished the owner looked expectantly. ”Well?” Kyrin looked at the glass for a moment before turning his attention to the man. ”You used magic to enhance the wine didn’t you?” The owner looked a little stunned, but turned his eyes away in embarrassment. ”Yes, I did. It was very weak magic though. Just something to leave the flavor for a few second after drinking.”

Kyrin nodded. It wasn’t very strong, but the glow in the liquid gave it away. He then gave an encouraging smile. ”Other than that it’s pretty good. I think the law states that if you have any form of magic in food you need to get a license  to sell it and a warning printed as to the effects.” The owner perked up. ”It’s very frowned upon to serve such food, but that doesn’t mean it’s forbidden. If you go through the proper channels then who knows? You have a very good wine.”

”Thank you very much. I really appreciate your advice.” Kyrin stood up and headed for the door. The owner met him at the door. ”You’ll have to come try it again once we go through the proper channels. And next time it’s free.” Kyrin gave an almost genuine smile. He liked the man. With the grin and a nod he left the restaurant. Now he had a favorite eatery in Rose Garden.
