Musings of a Wizard Empty Musings of a Wizard

Post by Zero Divinus 15th July 2021, 9:24 am

Zero gazed over the beautiful lake that surrounded the island that was Clover Town. The young mage stood on top of a hill watching the beautiful and glittering water below that was as famous as the wizards who lived there. Dressed in his normal cotton pants and vest, he stretched out, feeling his muscles pull after the long walk. Whistling, he trotted down the road, living in the moment and the nature around him. He entered the town, waving at wizards who sat on porches smoking pipes or went about their everyday business. Zero was amazed at the number of retired but still powerful mages that resided here. He wondered just how many S class wizards lived in this sleepy little town.

He came to a wooden door painted green with beautiful art work of trees growing through the wood. That took some amazing magic control! Zero knocked and the door opened on it's own and he stepped inside. The room was slightly smoky with a pine smell to it, the fire roared in the corner and a single mage sat in a arm chair looking as if he was half asleep. In his hands rested a long wooden pipe filled with tobacco. He was a smaller man in stature, about five feet from head to toe with a snow white beard, laugh lines beside his eyes and lips, and gentle but strong hands.

Zero cleared his throat and the mage turned to look at him. Zero bowed and explained his reason for being there and the job request from the guild. The old man nodded eagerly and Zero took his seat across from him, opening the small book he carried and plucking up a magic quill. The two got comfortable and the wizard began his tail, starting with his youth and the training of his magic. Zero scribbled down the information as the old man talked, his waving hands, spirts of laughter, and even tears as he spoke of lost friends and lost loves kept the story entertaining and lively. He had heard others were bored from listening to the old foggies, but Zero himself had been accused of being an old man in a young body his entire life.

They took a break for tea and cookies before beginning again. The story continued in his middle years, the battles he partook in and the day he met his wife. The jobs he took, the sights he had seen, and the many miles all over Fiore he traveled on foot, horseback, train, and carriage. Zero wrote dutifully, only stopping to ask a question or to fill in a little more detail. The story moved into his later years, his time as a high ranking mage, the enemies who fell before him, and into the years where it was time to hang up his robes and let the younger generation take over. His retirement party from the guild and the laughter and tears he shed with his fellow guild mates, students, and friends.

Zero wrote the final chapter, the old man finishing with his days in retirement and the joys he got to do now. The book closed and Zero set it to the side, it would be sent to a publisher later. The two spent the rest of the afternoon in conversation until the rays of the dawning sun told Zero it was time to go. He rose from his chair, taking the old man's hand and walked out, heading back to his guild.
