There’d been a job posting in the previous town. Wolves in the night. Basso howls ever more unsettling than the typical cry at the moon had been unsettling the people for miles. The adults could hardly sleep. Word that children could hardly sleep with the nightmares those howls sent to their dreams and their parents just beyond their doors, clutching their sharpest knives in case the wolves came crashing through. Even Elias had begun going out of his way to sleep in an inn rather than risk a night roughing it with the wolves in Fiore’s backcountry. Perhaps the trees were tall enough for a small perch, but he didn’t want to risk it. The villagers had said werewolves were known to roam the woods outside their clusters of cottages.

At the same time, Elias was a wizard. No matter how weak he was, a few werewolves weren’t going to stop him on the road to Era. Nor was his unreliable map. Half the villages he’d visited weren’t even mentioned and he’d begun to suspect the paper he bought was little more than a ripoff. Or the kingdom of Fiore was a lot larger than he’d originally thought. That didn’t really help Elias’ spirits.

To make matters worse, though, the sun was beginning to set. That meant the werewolves were going to come out tonight and so far, there wasn’t a village in sight. Elias consulted his map again. The village of Vestburg was supposed to be nearby. Maybe. It was becoming hard to tell in the shadows of dusk. He rolled it up and stuck it in his pack. It would be better to walk with his mind set on the road in case the wolves came out.
    ---------------------------
The howls started the moment the final sliver of sun disappeared over the horizon. They seemed stronger tonight, more than they’d ever been before and Elias couldn’t control his nervous shivering every time they pierced the night. Orange light glowed from the east. Last time Elias had checked, he hadn’t run into a time loop. That left only one possibility, a burning village. There could only be one attacker: the werewolves. Clarity washed through Elias’ mind as he broke out into a sprint.

“Help, help!” A man’s voice cried from up the road. Something about it sent chills down Elias’ spine. It was a desperate, helpless cry of one who knew he was about to meet his end but still desperately clung on. An ear-piercing howl split through the air. The wolves almost upon her.

What the man didn’t realize, however, was that Elias was closer. He shouted a word of command and wavy, pale blue light coalesced around his shoulders, quickly flowing down to his ankles and darkening into his navy blue Cloak of the Tundra. His feet felt lighter and Elias felt the wind almost lifting him up as he sprinted even faster. Elias could see the man’s silhouette now against the burning village. It was harder to make out what chased him. Three other bodies, a woman and two children ran alongside him. Elias guessed three wolves and a small werewolf. With any luck, it wasn’t anything he couldn’t handle. He clenched his fist and pale blue light began to stream from between his fingers. Another step, and a chunk of ice formed beneath his feet, launching Elias into the air as he lifted his fist above his head and opened it. A dozen large shards of ice crystallized and Elias wasted not even a moment flinging them down upon the wolves. They let out a cry of pain as the ice pierced their backs. Though it seemed to be more out of surprise than fear. Still, it was enough to get them to stop in their tracks.

“Keep running,” Elias shouted to the family. “I’ll stop these wolves.” He outstretched another hand and a wooden handle appeared in his hand after a flash of wavy green light. A chain quickly followed with the crackle of freezing metal. The wolves had met a challenge. The lone werewolf amongst the little pack let out a series of snarls and barks as it pushed itself back up. The three wolves flashed towards Elias.

He replied with the chain. Admittedly it wasn’t the perfect weapon. A spear would have been better but the chain was all Elias had and he made sure it filled the air between him and the wolves. Each wolf was struck once, twice, three times and even in the flickering midnight light, Elias could see the frost that slowly crawled along the wolves’ bodies. Slowing them down.

Elias’ focus slipped to his surroundings. The werewolf was nowhere to be seen. A growl slipped out from behind him  and searing pain flared across Elias’ back. He fell to the ground. He slammed his fist into the ground and in a flash of blue light, a platform of ice launched him out of the way. But it was only a moment’s more of safety. He had to get back on his feet to fight any more.

    Job Description:

    my sun...

The word of attacks had crept through vines until the tickle of the words had found themselves entering the ears of a blonde haired girl as she sat outside the Trading Company. She could hear people several feet away talking to each other unaware that others would be listening in on their conversation. At first, Aliannah hadn't thought too much about it has her hand gently glided over the fur of the small animal who had managed their way into her lap and under her hand. The copper fur of the small stoat was like silk under her fingers and they brushed across the fibers. Upon hearing the short and shocking news of the attacks the teenage female closed her eyes and pushed her magic to help focus her hearing so that she would be able to gather more information about the situation.

However, as the news continued to spill from the stranger's lips like oil, slick and demanding for attention, the girl's hand slowly stopped moving across the back of the stoat. Werewolves had attacked a village in the Cursed Lands. It wasn't like Aliannah had ever been there herself, not that knew of, but she was sure that Alyia--Her resident angel--had. But to hear the news of an attack occurring and tearing apart a village, shattering families, and causing a multitude of people to be injured had the girl worried. When would the next strike come?

A small nudge came from under the hand of the female causing for the girl to look down at the small animal she had in her lap. Oya, the copper-coloured stoat, looked back up at her expectantly. With a small smile at the rodent, the girl's gentle hand moved under Oya and lifted her from her lap and onto her shoulder. With the animal no longer in her lap, Aliannah began to get up. Her hands placed on the chilled surface of the stone that she had been sitting on, she pushed herself up and to her feet, letting them make contact with the ground gently and without a sound. With her blonde hair swaying free just below her thighs the girl made her way over to the strangers whom she had been eavesdropping on.

"Excuse me, I don't mean to interrupt your conversation, but I heard you talk about a village and attacks that were going on around it. What exactly happened?"

One of the two people looked over at Aliannah and sighed. "It seems that a small village in the Cursed Lands has been attacked by a pack of werewolves, however, this isn't the only things there have howlings and other things that have started to scare the Villagers. Some of the other villages that surrounded the area have put up missions."

A small frown pulled at the edges of the blonde girl's lips. "Where can I find one of the mission slips?"

The same person didn't answer but gestured to the wall of the next building after the Trading Company's and there on the wall was a slip of paper that had the large words MISSION printed across it. With a nod of Aliannah's head she went over to the wall and tugged the piece of parchment off of it before reading it over, she needed to get rid of the wolves before the next full moon, or well that was what the mission requested of her.

With paper in hand, the girl ran back into the Trading Company building and yelled at the closest guildmate she was going for a mission before running back to the back of the building, up to the top of the roof, and jumping off into the air her wings bursting from her back as she jumped.

The wind caught the feathers of her wings and lifted her into the air as she batted her wings once, then twice. The girl knew that she needed to hurry as that night, that night was the night of the full moon and she didn't know if there was anyone that was there to help the villages.

Her hair whipped behind her as she flew, her wings beating against the wind helping to move her faster and faster as the sun began to set. She didn't really know where she was going, but the warmth on the back of her neck from the small stoat and the voice in the back of her head acting as a compass made her confident that she was going in the right direction.

It didn't take the girl long to get to where she needed to go. But she knew she was there the minute she could sense the distress in the air and the waves on anxiety that lifted off of the buildings that were far below her. She flapped her wings once more, bolting through the air before she managed to catch the site of a single aura that spoke of a mage. Someone else was there. A sigh of relief filled the lungs of the girl as she pushed her body into a diving position.

However, it was then the sun flickered darkly over the horizon and the full moon showed without competition in the sky above. It was even seconds after the sun had disappeared that howls echoed through the air. Their strong melodic sounds dominating the air, rolling through the trees and across the night sky. It seemed like the ink of the dark night got darker as if foretelling the impending doom of the night.

The girl dove from the sky, following the man to the village that was now light in a fire that aimed to consume. Screams melodized with the howls that pierced the air and the blonde girl was nearing quickly. The sense of magic burst through the air. A cold chill went through her veins. Ice magic.

Finally, she was there, she could see a blonde man fending off several wolves from the people of the village that had managed to escape so far. Eyebrows drew together and the girl tugged at the chain around her neck, yanking off the pendant that took residence there. There was a bright glow and in the wake of the crushed amulet was a crystal blue citrine scythe. With a deep breath, the girl closed her wings with a final beat and threw her body between the male and the werewolf that had appeared.

Her body neared the ground and Aliannah tucked her weapon flat against her body allowing her body to roll as it hit the ground and launch herself into a position where she could both attack and defend in a moments notice. Not a word came from the girl's mouth as she spotted the man a little farther away, seeming to have launched himself away from the werewolf to regain footing.

With a sneer, the small girl placed both hands on her weapon and spun it in front of her before placing one hand behind one of the blades and elonging the attack in order to reach the young werewolf. Her blade raked across its chest and the beast flung itself backward but not before the angel was on it, ducking below it, both hands on the scythe and quickly shoving the blade of blue through the chest of the animal.

Knowing the animal would no longer be getting up, the girl turned and looked at the other male on the scene. "Hi, nice to meet you, we don't have much time to talk, but I'm Aliannah."

    ...shines for you

Elias had barely even started his wizardly adventure through Fiore and his end was just about upon him. At night in the middle of nowhere, the world only lit by fire and a full moon. Elias repeated that in his head. In the middle of the goddamn night, he was going to die. Time seemed to slow down as the wolves advanced upon him. Slowly. They took their time to relish in what Elias assumed was the only kill that gave any sort of resistance. Then they would run off and kill that terrified family. So Elias did the only rational thing he could: stagger to his feet and meet his end with dignity and admit to himself that the little adventure had been for naught and his mother was right. No one could make it on their own with nothing but an inkling of power. He raised his chain and prepared to fight again. The smaller wolves couldn’t take much more. With any luck, Elias would be able to take out those three and wound the short werewolf. Maybe that would give the family a fighting chance.

With a deep breath, Elias raised his chain for one final strike when an angel quite literally fell from the sky. He blinked, completely awestruck as her scythe flashed in the air, dismantling the younger werewolf with a quick flurry of blows. The wolves were surprised too. One had let out a yelp of surprise as its master was so quickly cut down. Elias didn’t waste a moment following up. He hadn’t expected a savior to come crashing down, but that was no excuse for inaction. A platform of ice launched him into the air and the chain lashed out, catching that same wolf in the snout. A flick of the wrist and a hail of blows later, the other wolves were struck just as Elias hit the ground and with a final flash of purple light, a semicircle of ice spikes erupted from the ground and impaled the trio just before they could catch on to a rhythm of battle.

The angel finally introduced herself. Aliannah. Certainly an angelic name. She said there wasn’t any time to talk but that one frame of her looking sidelong at Elias seemed to make time stop for a moment. That scene would be burned into his mind for a long time to come. Aliannah also seemed to give off an angelic glow in the night. Or maybe that was just Elias’ imagination. She was about his height with long blonde hair and bangs that threatened to cover her eyes. Maybe it was just the strange mixture of fire moonlight, but her hair almost seemed to glow.

“I didn’t know I had a guardian angel,” Elias said. He honestly wasn’t sure how much he believed that statement. Maybe in the moment he said it, though gods didn’t tend to give people guardian angels. Especially not nobodies like Elias. ”That doesn’t matter anyways. We need to save this town, or at least whoever’s still alive.”

He didn’t waste a moment in sprinting the distance from the wolf corpses to the village. A wolf was bearing down on a teenage boy desperately clutching an unstained axe as he ran past a burning hut. Elias’ chains lashed out, lashing themselves around the wolf’s torso and tossing it through a flaming window. The boy didn’t even need to be told to run, he’d been long gone the moment the wolf was caught.

The place was fairly typical as far as villages went. Huts and random clusters surrounded a main street dotted with a well, an inn, and a small general store. Only the store appeared to be holding out against the wolves. Four large werewolves prowled around the bolted door and barred windows, each searching for a weakness while they left the rest of the village to their younger werewolves.

A snarl from behind. Elias dodged to his right just as one of the shorter werewolves clawed at his side. Another swipe and this time Elias ducked. He whipped the chains about, running circles around the werewolf. The beast became slower and slower with each strike, frost caking over its body before it finally fell under Elias’ onslaught. It got the attention of one of the larger werewolves.

“Go protect that store,”Elias shouted aimlessly at Aliannah. He was focused on his own survival at this point. With any luck, that angel girl would be able to do a hell of a lot more good. The werewolf let a series of snarls at it’s fellows before charging straight for Elias. The wizard responded by raising his hand above his head and flung dozens of crystallized spikes at the beast. They made contact, a few even pierced its pelt yet the charge wasn’t even slowed.

Elias panicked. This werewolf wasn’t even a foot taller than the others but it wasn’t even fazed by his attack like the others had. Even worse, it was almost upon him. The spell had taken too long to cast and he hadn’t even bothered to move from the middle of the village’s main street. A pillar of ice raised Elias into the air, but even that was too slow as the werewolf came crashing into the space where he had been barely a second before. Needless to say, Elias lost his footing and fell to the ground. Had he not landed on his feet, Elias wouldn’t have been able to backstep away the wolf’s follow-up attack. The beast’s momentum carried it forward and it sunk its fangs into Elias’ side. He let out a stifled scream of pain before driving a fist into the werewolf’s head, staggering the beast for a perfect moment. Elias jumped to the side and whipped his chain into the space where he had been standing just a moment before and striking the werewolf’s exposed forearms. It let out a yelp of pain just as Elias flicked the chains again and struck it in the neck. The werewolf lashed out and the wizard’s chains struck the beast on its flank. Ice crept over its body and the two kept playing their deadly game of cat and mouse. The frost creeping over the beast’s body might have been slowing it down, but so was the pain flaring in the wizard’s side. Each grew slower with every passing moment. All the while, a ring of wolves surrounded Elias and the werewolf. No doubt curious to see who the victor would be.

    My Light...

After the words had left the girls mouth she couldn't help but take in the appearance of the man behind her. He had blonde, what looked like to be semi-choppy, hair; what seemed to be a lighter shade of what would be called chocolate brown eyes that seemed to sparkle with admiration?; and a lean figure. The girl didn't have long to look at him before a one-liner slipped from his lips. Upon hearing it the girl's brows furrowed and her face turned into something comedic. But there was something about the way that he had said it that made Aliannah more concerned.

However, before the girl could comment on it the man had gotten up and spoke about saving the town and whoever was still alive. A sharp flashback ran through the head of the girl, knowing that what she was seeing at this point in time was not her memories, but those of the Angel's living inside of her. Homes burning to the ground, cries of the people that she had called her family. People, descendants of both demons and angels, laying in the pathways of the street death wracking through their bodies and a small girl no older than six or seven crying by being held captive by the people who had done it. A small sob wracked the body of the blonde girl. She hadn't known about Alyia's past, but she was sure that she was who she was because of it.

Wiping a tear from her cheek the girl adjusted her grip on her weapon. No one was there for Alyia as her home was taken from her, no one was there to wipe the tears as she cried, no one was there to pick up the broken pieces that had come with the regret of not being able to do anything. But that was not the case now. Aliannah and Alyia were strong together, they would be able to take on this together. Even if Alyia never had someone looking out for her, that didn't mean that the people who lived in this village would not. She was not about to let another small child receive the fate the Alyia had.

By now, the other man had sprinted off into the village, fending off the wolves from attacking other homes and the people who lived there. Taking in a deep breath the girl spun the scythe in one of her hands and tossed it lightly in order to get the handle on it. With one hand she grasped the scythe, like one would a spear and hurdled the scythe at a wolf that had begun to back several people into a corner.

Her aim wasn't perfect and missed the heart of the wolf, spearing itself through its shoulder blade instead, causing for it to howl into the night. But without a hesitating moment, the girl had taken to a sprint before taking to the air in a leap, launching her body at the scene.

She had managed to land on the back of the wolf that was pinned to where it was due to her weapon sticking out of its back. Landing her hand on the handle of the scythe the girl yanked it from the back of the beast before spinning it once, twice, above her head and bringing it down to cleave off the head of the animal. The body of the wolf fell to the ground and Aliannah looked at the people who were in front of her. She couldn't tell if they were scared of the wolf that was about to eat them, or her. She could feel warm droplets along her skin and a stream of the same substance down her arm. She didn't have to look down to know it was the blood of the wolves that she had killed, but it didn't make it any easier to see the people that she had saved cower at her in fear.

With a huff, the girl hopped off the back of the wolf and looked around. She could see the other mage fighting and ducking in time with the wolves like that of a dance. The amount of the wolves in the pack was not something that Aliannah had been prepared for. Upon her look around she had noticed that there was one place that seemed to be holding its own, the store.

Hearing the voice of the male mage echoing her thoughts Aliannah looked back to the store with her blue citrine eyes and saw that though it was holding up well. It would not be for long. Four large werewolves circled the store. Gritting her teeth together the girl sprinted at the animals. Not a sound came from her lips and not a noise came from her feet against the ground. The animals didn't know the girl was upon them until they saw the flash of blonde hair and a sting of a weapon.

But as strength would have it Aliannah hadn't managed to get all of the wolves across their chests with her blade as a warning. The beasts themselves were slightly over four feet tall, they were built and seemed to radiate a bit of magic. With a glare, the girl was now the only thing that stood between the werewolves and the store. Standing up straight the girl lifted her hand into the air. "I call upon the Fallen Blessed!" Without a second to spare, 4 beams descended from the sky, each one targeting a wolf.

To say that all 4 beams managed to hit a wolf would be lying, rather instead upon hearing the magic coming from the sky one of the wolves had leapt forward at the blonde girl, claws extended as his fellow companions had been momentarily knocked to the ground.

Seeing the wolf leaping forwards to attack the girl sneered and dove out of the way, rolling against the ground before coming up again in a crouch. The wolf was looking at her, their next target and moved to attack again. But this time it wasn't alone. Another wolf lunged from the side of Aliannah, recovered from the attack that she had just given. While one she was suspecting and one she was aware of Aliannah could not take two of something that was larger than herself.

Placing her weapon verticle to her chest she allowed herself to be hit and sent skidding across the ground before her back found the wall of the next building over. It was at this time, she had the attention of all three wolves and knew that the store was not in much danger anymore.

Falling to the ground, the girl looked helpless, her magic had always been canceling itself out making her seem like a D-Rank mage, or even a C-Rank mage if they were so inclined to say. Looking up from her position on the ground and at the four wolves that stared at the girl like she was their next meal Aliannah looked pitiful.

But, knowing that they had underestimated her the girl's lips pulled into a smirk as she placed her hand on the ground. Her eyes locked with the single wolf that had seemed to best her. "I call upon Hell's Terrain."

Not sooner than the girl had muttered the words that the world around the five of them turned black, Aliannah knew that she wouldn't take a chance on how long this battle was going to last, and the spell expanded to cover the entire village. She wasn't worried about the villagers, or the person that she was battling with as they would not be harmed by the spell. But darkness, and red spread across the land, the terrain changing from something that was something you would find in the woods to a land that looked like it had just been imaged from Hell.

    Hell's Terrain:

The smirk on the girl’s face grew. Her eyes were gleaming with mischief and her pink lips were upturned knowingly. The rest of this battle shouldn't take much longer.

The magic keeping Elias’ wintry chains in Fiore was beginning to slip. If even for a moment, the wizard’s lone weapon would have to return to the tundra or whatever magical, icy tomb it rested within. He’d always thought it was awfully silly that he took weapons from a place he’d never been himself. Didn’t most requip mages find and store their own weapons, anyways? The wizard blinked and shook the thought from his mind. No point in getting distracted.

Elias zeroed back in on the fight at hand. Too much time had passed in thought and the werewolf was almost upon him. It’s claws and maw spread wide as it leapt into the air. The wizard’s eyes narrowed as the beast descended and he replied with his foot. A single, deadly sidekick met the adult werewolf’s ribs with a sickening crack and the beast fell to the ground, whimpering. With that same foot, Elias crushed the beast’s neck and wasted no time on his semi-intelligent onlookers. Sure, they may have been curious to know who was stronger, but that didn’t mean they wanted to let Elias live. Monsters didn’t have a concept of respect. But at the very moment Elias began gathering mana for his next round of attacks, the world changed. What had once been a tightly-packed dirt road gave way to hellish, cracked earth. The sky darkened and the silvery moonlight gave way to a reddish glow. As if the world itself had changed. The wolves hesitated and Elias stole a glance down the road. Aliannah stood surrounded by the other grown werewolves, holding that same scythe in her angelic glory. She must’ve cast the spell. One powerful enough to change the world itself, or maybe drag this section of earthland into a pocket dimension. It mattered not what it was. It was still an incredibly powerful spell and, needless to say, Elias was awestruck once again.

He didn’t notice his eyes sparkling.

But those same sparkling eyes drove him even further. For the first time in months, Elias found himself with the drive to improve. He had to prove himself in the face of this newfound wonder. Elias let out a shout of hellish defiance in the face of this half-burning hellscape and drew even more magic to his fingertips. A stomp on his left, fist to his right. Spikes of ice erupted from the ground and shards crystallized in the air. The aurora flared from Elias’ body as these two attacks slammed into the wolves surrounding him. Ice tore into the beasts’ flanks and they fell without even a fighting chance.

“What…” Elias whispered to himself. The cloak and chain dispersed into pale light. And Elias was left standing in a gray sweater and jeans, surrounded by wolf corpses. “... The fuck happened?” The wizard finished as he stared at the last traces of his aurora dispersing into the hellish sky.

Elias doubted Aliannah had any answers for him, but she was powerful. Maybe he would tag along with her for a bit. Who knew where the road would lead?

    My Light...

With the landscape what it was it took the wolves by surprise allowing for the girl to take her scythe with both hands and ram it through the chest of one of the beasts before ripping through its side and slicing the neck of another one. The two wolves she had hit falling to the ground as their blodd slide down her scythe, painting her hands red. Spinning around the girl came eye to eyewith the last two wolves and smirked as she waited for t them to attack. The monsters were no longer rational asbthey had just seen their companions killed before their eyes.

Not much after the girl had smirked had both of the monsters run at her. One of them leaped into the air, aiming for her head. She had seen this attack before. With a scoff the girl bent backward and let her knees hit the ground as her scythe was swung up and stabbed into the belly of the beast. It cut a fine line as the monster finished going over her, but the moment it landed the beast was down. The cut along it's underside had allowed for its intestines to spill out. It was going no where.

The blonde didn't even have to look backwards to know that the monster was down. Instead she looked at the last beast who stood before her challenging. Placing her hand on her scythe a little farther up the girl used it to get to her feet. She looked at the beast and raised a single eyebrow at it. What was it going to do? She had just killed it's pack mates ruthlessly. Her eyes met those of the beast and through her blue Corrine eyes a red and silver flash shown through.

Without another word or motion the beast tucked it's tail between its legs and skittered away.

Taking in a deep breath the girl canceled her spell allowing for the rest of the terrain to return to normal. Upon releasing her breath the girl could feel a surge in magic from behind her. The other mage.

With a gently and slender hand she reached into her pocket and pulled out a wiping cloth. She ran it along her scythe, cleaning the blood that had gotten on it before pushing part of her magic into the blade and making it once more a pendant as to which she reattached to her necklace.

With cloth in hand the girl began to wipe down her hands and parts of her body that seemed to be soaked with the blood. Looking at the bodies of the wolves she frowned, she didn't like to kill, but if an animal was harming a human then things needed to be done. With quick pace she stepped over the bodies and made her way to the other mage.

"Not bad. Good job. You seem to have gotten better too."

A smile played on her lips and she held out the cloth she had used to wipe the blood off of her skin.

"Wipe it off now before it dried. It'll be harder to get off then."

Handing her cloth to the male she smiled before turning to the village that they had just saved. There was still some damage done, but the village would be able to fix itself easily especially with the meat and the other materials they would be able to scavenge from the bodies of the dead wolves.

A thought hitting the girl she turned back to the male. Her eyes were serious now. "Also, you. You will be sticking with me until you learn that you are worthy of a guardian angel. Everyone is. Sometimes it just takes them a while to find you."
