Lyserg was in his office, the highest floor of the main castle and twiddled his thumbs while listening to classical music from a radio. It was a harmonic sound that swept through the office. For a man of his standing, he was rather serene. Never liking aggression or confrontation all that much, he preferred to deal with things in a more elegant and orderly fashion.

Sighing, looking at his pendulum clock that had a smooth and unintegrative sound of clicking that never succeeded in being annoying or displeasing, he scooched away from his desk. The chair made a slight squeaking noise as he pushed it away from himself and stood up. Dressed in a more comfortable, but still imposing manner, his ever so proper looking mantel fluttered as he stood up and bursted out his door in a gust.

Trailing down the spiraling stairs of the highest inhabitable tower in the castle he then checked the time on one of the many clocks he has put everywhere on the walls of the castle. Inside the guild, Lyserg never felt the need to wear his armor. Here he was at home. All he had on were rather comfortable clothes and his cloak that allowed him to look adrett without wearing any remarkable fashion.

Noticing the time, it were two more minutes. In two minutes, he had assigned a meeting with Lucille Grove, a rather conspicuous girl who had pleaded to work with the small Intelligence unit Lyserg had created for the purpose of gathering information and passing it along to all the important figures in the guild. Unexpectedly, Lyserg had found her following him on several occasions without ever receiving orders from him. She seemingly did so out of free will. And the stern and composed looking girl would be questioned today.

In a non-confrontative fashion, Lyserg wished to simply find out why she had been doing so without the need for him. Seemingly, there was no superficial reason. The guild had barely any connection to him currently. They small group of followers that were left after Lyserg had led the guild out of Thunder Island and into this place were all simply amazed by his commitment to the idea of keeping up the name of Tartarus and his effort of organization that had never existed previously.

In all honesty, Lyserg knew they were mistrusting of him. Still not completely sure of what he was planning. And Lyserg admitted that they had all reason to. Before the fail of their leadership, they had simply taken it upon them to be the bane of the Magic Council and the Rune Knights. The drive to destruction was still there, he knew. But that was something he wanted to root out. Time after time, he would nip all of the negative attitude in the bud and create something greater.

Snapping out of his deep thought when he arrived at the designated room. A largely empty one with simply a few books on the history of Ca-Elum and the origin of the Giant Monsters surrounding the guild grounds, there was only a large wooden table in the center of the rectangular room, a large set of windows that expanded up to the ceiling on the open side of the study, and three chairs. Two on the door-side of the table facing the window, and one larger one on the window side of the table facing the entrance.

Taking a book out of one of the shelves entitled "Godsire. Myth, Mystery, Legend." he took a seat in one of the smaller chairs and began searching for an interesting chapter after he had appreciated the world outside through one of the windows. He was right on time, but didn't expect Lucille to be any more punctual than 5 minutes after their meeting time. It was usual that people without an extraordinary sense for timing like him had something he called the "5-Minute-Feel" which usually delayed most everything they did by exactly 5 minutes. It was an interesting quirk some humans had.

Post by Lucille Grove 16th August 2014, 10:25 am

Lucille was nervous. This was something that was not a new feeling, but something she had rarely felt in the entirety of her life. Lucille hated being anything that resembled nervousness, always wanting to seem calm and collected in the face of any danger or problem. She had stared down many a fighter that was leagues ahead of her, and felt no nervousness at doing so. The dark mage had successfully accomplished a few infiltrations of her father’s business partners without any trouble, and it seemed like that would have ended in death had she actually been caught. So what would possibly make the unshakable Lucille feel like if she had messed up, she would fail her master epically?

Lyserg had called her in for a meeting. Now this would normally be okay, but Lucille had a sneaking suspicion he wanted to talk about the fact that she had been following him around for a while. She had been caught a couple times, yet continued to do it anyways. It was her way of being a true and loyal member of Tartarus, always making sure nothing could attack their master randomly. It might have gone a little overboard, seeing as how Lyserg was a freaking SS-ranked time mage who could take care of himself, but Lucille wanted to be absolutely sure he was fine and as they say, “If you want something done right then do it yourself.” So thats what she did. Maybe she distracted him at times and overdid it? Lucille didn’t know and was afraid to find out what her master might say.

Walking towards the meeting room, she put on an air of confidence around her. In reality she was extremely nervous, and hoping that it was just a formality for something he wanted her to do. As she entered the room, she spotted his imposing figure sitting down and reading. Obviously she didn’t want to interrupt his reading, but she also didn’t want him to think of her as late, so in as calm of a voice as she could muster Lucille would announce her presence. “Master. You needed my presence?”

As the clacking of a pair of boots roamed quietly and delicately down the hallway Lyserg was surprised. He hadn't even read 2 sentences. She was incredibly punctual. Impressed at this, he decided to keep reading until she would enter. And as he picked up that the pair of feet had turned around and entered the door that he had left open, he had a slight smirk on his face. It would seem that he was content with his reading, but in actuality he was amused at the calm atmosphere around Lucille.

Appearances were simply that, appearances. They fooled people, Lyserg knew that. He was a prime example. But he didn't know Lucille well enough. He didn't know any person currently alive well enough. It was a lonely life, truly. But necessary to his strive for knowledge. And there were always people that he encountered he deemed worth spending time with. Shutting the book silently and laying it on the table after she had announced her presence, he stood up and walked over to the slightly bigger chair not scooting the one he was sitting on back into the table.

"Yes, I did. I'm impressed by your punctuality. It's admirable. Not many people tend to dismiss their biological clocks when it comes to keeping track of time." He said with a content voice whilst sitting down on the opposite side. "Do you prefer to sit or stand?" He asked, motioning towards the chair he had sat on with a hand. This was a genuine question as he knew people that simply liked to stand, rather than sit. It was not a test or a purpose for him to observe her. Although he couldn't trust that many members likely thought of him as a deceptive and merciless man that would do such things to his own companions.

Dragging the book over the table, he let it rest at his side and looked at her. Strict clothing, as she always saw her. But noble, and elegant. Lyserg thought that she was quite the beautiful girl. Wondering what she would turn out as when she hit the age of adulthood, he traced her features. Soft, veiling of what kind of profession she followed. Contradictory of the cold attitude she put up around the guild.

"I want to inquire about recent events. It hasn't gone unnoticed that you have been following me. Ever since the first time the ghoul caught you in the Ancient Ruins I have been keeping an eye out for you. And it seems that you never got disturbed by me spotting you. So it can't be that you are spying on me for someone else. You have no personal connection to me or have ever displayed features of extreme admiration that would lead you to do such things." He spoke before a small pause, gazing at her somewhat sternly.

"I want to know Miss Grove, why is it that you follow me? You do not seem like an unreasonable person and there were no orders to follow that I have heard about. As of now, I would rather think that the members would want to assassinate me rather than protect me." He sighed, it did pose as quite the puzzle to him. "You seem like a collected person, so I could likely not catch you lying and invading a member's privacy is unlike me. But I will urge you to speak nothing but truth to me." He finished, likely somewhat more rigorously than he wanted it to come out. But he payed attention to not raise his voice or seem hostile.

Lucille walked over towards one of the chairs and delicately sat down when Lyserg offered it to her. She wasn’t going to possibly be so frightened that her legs would start shaking, and then Lyserg would notice it obviously. No, she would be delicate and ease into this conversation. When Lyserg mentioned exactly why she was meeting with him, she tensed slightly. There wasn’t going to be any beating around the bush for this, it was straight to the point and direct. Maybe in another world she would have gotten her wish of avoiding the subject, but now it was time to deal with it. But the true question was exactly why she was doing it, which almost stumped the blood mage herself. Truthfully her own motives were questionable, but she stopped thinking and placed her hands in her lap as she looked at Lyserg.

“My teacher Raylard once told me that loyalty is something that cannot only be given in words.” She began, slowly drawing circles on her lap. “One must always show their loyalty in actions, not words. Words can deceive, and lead to one being betrayed. Words are fickle, and mean nothing compared to actions. Actions portray everything about a person. From their behavior, to their interests, to their loyalty. I want to showcase my loyalty to the guild in everything I do. I follow you to protect you from any dangers, no matter what they may be. I am your sword and shield to use as you please, and without complaint my master.” Lucille’s face showed her dedication and determination. She wanted to prove that she was loyal to Tartarus in only ways that would prove her ultimate undying loyalty. No matter what it was, she wanted to showcase that she was a proud mage of Tartarus, even if she couldn’t proclaim it to the world loudly.

She was a fickle figure. What he had heard about her contradicted her appearance, really. She was a blood mage, required to commit to gruesome and violent acts to prowess her strength. It was almost confusing to Lyserg as he looked at her. He knew how much an image could lie, but there was an air about her that told him something else than "violent murderer" even though that was exactly what she was known for.

Scruffing his chin beard, he then heard her speak. Slightly surprised, his eyebrows moved up as she explained her teachings. A teacher. Someone that had educated her in the past. It was a distorted version of loyalty she elaborated upon. But it was her own. As long as she was loyal, Lyserg deemed it no problem. Everyone could be for their personal reasons. But something bugged Lyserg about this definition specifically.

"A strong opinion you have there, Miss Grove. I respect that." He said genuinely and seriously, leaning back in his chair and folding one leg over another and then putting his elbows into an angle in which his index fingers met on his lips and his hands clasped together. Lyserg looked to the side, thinking for a moment. He couldn't pinpoint what exact button she was pressing that was starting to bug him so much.

"Your teacher..." He put forth, after a short pause of thought and moving his hands onto armrests of the chair. "Rylard... tell me about him." He spoke, gazing into her eyes. He was almost sure that there was some information he could get out of her if he asked that question. "Who was he?" He asked, intentionally using past tense. Something told him he had passed away, but he could have been wrong. His grammar was in no case wrong, but more common to describe a situation that can now not be repeated anymore.

Before Lucille had a chance to speak however, he added on. "Please..." He intonated. "Be honest. I am not asking for a run of the mill 'who was he'. I am asking you to answer me whole-heartedly and with your deepest understanding of the question." He spoke, unsure what was to come, but secure that it would only widen his understanding of the girl before him.

Lucille raised an eyebrow when Lyserg asked about her teacher. Raylard was indeed a figure that many would try to say they knew, but deep down only Lucille could figure him out. His motivations and reasonings were only known to his apprentice, and not all of them either. Raylard had done things that would shame him and his family’s name forever, but yet no one could tie him to them due to his careful planning. No one could ever pin any of his crimes on him, and those who might even have a clue would shrug it off. Lucille looked her guild master in the eyes, ready to respond to his question with the deepest of honesty and without holding back anything from him.

“Raylard Jebidiah Wayne. He’s a playboy, and extremely wealthy. His family is an extremely successful merchant business, and as the only child of his parents he inherited the entire thing.” Lucille placed her hand on the table in front of her, and crossed her fingers together. “To the people of Fiore, Raylard is a cool and calm, if a bit perverted, man who would do what is best for his workers and the people. However, the true Raylard Wayne is a man of sick pleasures only the darkest of those of us could comprehend, or stomach. I personally do not condone everything he has done, but even then I would not challenge him to change at all.” Lucille nodded to herself, and then cupped her chin as she continued to think. “The man was a genius though. His ability to tactfully defuse situations and come up with plans was unparalleled to anyone I knew. Hell, its how he got me to be his apprentice in the first place. Learning under him taught me many a thing, but one important one was about loyalty. Not much else about him I could tell, he is still a mystery even to me in some ways.” Lucille finished, looking at her master curiously.

“Is that what you wanted to know master? Or was it something else?” She asked, wondering if she just bored him with details he didn’t want to know.

The Intruiging Spy [Private] Empty Re: The Intruiging Spy [Private]

Post by Tuna 16th August 2014, 4:01 pm

It might have seemed as if Lyserg was spacing out. His eyes were focused on the edge where ceiling met wall, his face appeared to display apathy when in actuality it was deep thought. He was listening, and it was rare, but he enjoyed the voice of the girl talking. Concentrating on the content however, he didn't get to enjoy it too closely. And in all honesty, what she was telling him was quite interesting. He thought that he was beginning to understand.

In his lifetimes, or rather many lifetimes Lyserg had met many people. Some of them, the evilest and most despicable creatures that dared to call themselves humane. Even though he had done things and was always ready to do things that went against humanity as a whole, there was not a speck of him that would ever call himself belonging to the concept of humanity in the sense of good nature and gentleness. He didn't believe in such things.

That didn't mean he believed in violence and brutality either. The world wasn't black and white, and he wasn't either. Sadly, so many humans seemed to be. And despite Lucille Grove not creating the image that she was, the story of her master made the old geezer appear so. He was able to categorize people with mental issues fairly easily. They functioned following a certain pattern. It was always different, but it was always a pattern these people followed.

As Lucille finished talking and asked a final question, Lyserg understood what had bugged him all along. It was the fact that she was imposed. She wasn't honest. Loyalty to her meant little, if anything at all, and she simply chose to cling to it as an aspect of her teaching. She might deny the fact that there was simply a natural reflex about the concept of loyalty within her, but it made sense if placing the fact that she was following him around without having any real reason to do so.

"Miss Grove," he spoke after another small pause of silence. "it was not what I wanted to know but it helped me conclude something." He spoke, standing up and looking outside the window, hiding his arms under his cloak. Admiring the clouded sky with the rays of sun shining down onto the barren wasteland with rain pouring down far in the distance, he had a decision to make. It would depend on Lucille, which path he would follow. But has determined to try it.

"There is a parabel someone who fostered me once has given me about loyalty. I find it rather.... fitting, in this situation." He said with a light-hearted tone. Turning around, he looked her in the eyes passionately, but seriously. "To simplify it and without sweeping over into philosophical speech, the story gives a situation to the lyrical character. He is to employ one of two workers for a job that requires a high level of obedience. Absolute obedience, if you wish to call it so." He began.

"Now, one worker is a parade example of obedience and loyalty. He does what he is told, when he is told, never complains, takes any punishment and the most important thing of all: He NEVER questions." Lyserg said, stopping for a short moment to let the emphasis on the word 'never' ring out. Taking another silent breath, he continued. "The other worker is eager and determined, however strong-willed and passionate. Obstinate and often going about his own way."

Lyserg now strengthened his gaze into a glare. "The employer chose the second worker in the end. Do you think you can tell me why?" Lyserg said, now laying off the tension. He began strolling over to a bookshelf awaiting an answer from Lucille. It was definitely a hard question for someone with a concept of loyalty like that. It wouldn't surprise him if she simply brushed off the question and asked for the answer. This wasn't supposed to be a test for the answer in actuality, rather a test for understanding of what he meant by his words.

Lucille stopped her initial retort of why this made any sense; Lyserg wouldn’t have said anything about it unless it had to deal with their current situation. Thinking harder, Lucille could honestly say the difference between the two was obvious in a way. “I would assume because the second worker could add in their own mixture of how they do things…...or something of the sort.” Lucille furrowed her eyebrows, trying to make an understanding of it all. The girl didn’t exactly know what it was that would attract someone to hire someone that would talk back. “Why would he hire him over the first worker though? The second could quite possibly second guess everything the master did, leading to frequent arguments and inefficient working. I don’t understand it at all.” Truthfully, she might have understood had Raylard not secretly beat undying loyalty into her mind. Each training session she would unknowingly have her mind warped by him, via his techniques or magic that he had his servants perform on her. It was the perfect way to create his own killing machine, but he did not expect his own untimely end thanks to an assassin. The Wayne fortune went to his only known child, and Lucille went off to look for a new master.

Lyserg snickered at her response. She was visibly confused and it amused him. The facade of a stern and collected already grown-up woman seemed to falter at a simple mind-game. But it was unfair to her, the playing with her mind. Lyserg knew. And thus, he would end it all quickly. But nothing would bring him around this short entertainment he was able to receive.

Turning around, back to Lucille while flipping through the pages of a book he began to speak whilst concentrating on reading. "You see Miss Grove, it is extremely simple. Yet difficult to grasp for someone who's sense of loyalty stems from definition alone." He spoke calmly. "The loyalty out of free will is ultimately always stronger and more earnest than the loyalty that stems out of obligation." He finalized, coming straight to the point.

"You see, if I were to ask you to always obey my orders, no matter what, you would do it. That is what you were taught. There is no substance behind your actions, there is no meaning you derive from it. You do it without emotion. There is no passion in that behavior." Deciding that this was the correct book to keep and take up to his office, he shut it close and slid it under his cloak, raising his gaze to Lucille again.

"The employer was able to teach the second worker to understand his duty. In the end, the second worker didn't do it out of simple obligation, payment or submission. No, he returned to work every single day upbeat and willing to commit." He spoke, eagerly. "We are humans Miss Grove, we have something called passion. It can drive us far past normal limitations." He said light-heartedly with a slight smile towards Lucille.

"Miss Grove, I condone your actions, yes I even support them. But you can't find any other reason for doing them than your reflex, your instinct and your nature. Do you think you would make for someone whom this guild can use, someone who could end up being a constant, a part of this dream? Do you actually believe in me? Is there any respect for your guildmaster at all, or is it all imposed and enforced behavior because of something from your past?" He said, now slightly more serious and losing his grin.

Walking over to the second chair next to her, he pulled it from the table and took a seat. "The loyalty that can be questioned and finally prevails is true. The loyalty that can't be questioned or falters under pressure is false." He said glaring in her eyes. "Why are you loyal Lucille? Is it because of your own volition and commitment to me and my ideas, or is it because you have nothing left to do?" He said, finishing his speech.

Although Lyserg was sure both of them knew the current answer, he was expecting a moment of silence to kick in. He was sure that this was a bit much for the young woman, but he didn't think that it was overkill. He wanted to question her. He wanted the girl to question herself. She was not unreasonable, and somewhere he could sense something from her. An air of desire and passion. He found himself having made his decision. Lyserg wanted her to become stronger, and so he would make her if she commited. If she didn't, he wouldn't force her. She would keep living as a member of the guild under their name. Simply without knowing why.

Silence fell after Lyserg finished speaking. Lucille looked away, towards the ground as she felt ashamed of herself for not having the loyalty her master wanted. In all honesty she knew she had only done this because she had nothing else, nothing that would have her take under a new master. But something screamed that it wasn’t right, and that she needed to follow under Lyserg not out of duty or obligation but out of her own free will. Looking back up towards him, her eyes slightly wavering and showing her vulnerability at the moment. “I was loyal….out of the duty I had. Out of the obligation I felt. I believe...that I have to prove my unblinding loyalty so your goals can be accomplished without hesitation. But…” Lucille’s face hardened into one of a determined warrior to get back to their former level. “I want to be an effective weapon, of my own free will. To be able to do things like question, do things in my own unique way and ultimately be worthwhile to the guild.” Lucille clenched her fists, knowing that it wouldn’t be easy to stop thinking like she was currently.

“I want to be strong….to be useful for you and Tartarus. As I am now…...I cannot be. But I want to become stronger.” Lucille was determined to not be weak and useless any longer. She was still the girl that Raylard Wayne had molded to be his perfect emotionless weapon. But she wanted to be better and more useful for Lyserg and his dreams. She believed in them, but she followed him only out of blind loyalty. She wanted to follow out of her own ideas of loyalty.

Lyserg had gone further than he had expected he would come with her in this conversation. He was duely impressed. Smiling inwardly, he kept the stern expression for now. She wasn't ready yet, he wouldn't force her. He didn't want to abuse this girl. Lyserg could sense that Lucille had had enough of that in the past. What she needed now was drive, commitment, someone who gave her passion. He would try to make that for her.

Lyserg stood up and moved over to her putting a hand onto her shoulder and gazing down at her calmly. "Miss Grove, I understand that this has likely been a bit much. I did not intend to question your foundation of life and make it seem meaningless. But in all honesty, I see more potential in your intelligence than submissive obedience." He spoke earnestly before taking his hand away and starting to trail around back to the window.

"I don't expect you to change your ways right away, tomorrow or even in the coming week. Don't expect yourself to. That would amount to nothing. But know that I will always be there for you if you have issues. For I am not only your guildmaster and superior, but also your comrade." He added looking out the window without looking at her. "In the future, I am sure that you will be able to become stronger. You honestly impressed me today. As I hope that I did the same to you as well." He finished light-heartedly, now turning around to look at her.

Lucille felt something well up inside her, and it felt weird to the Tartarus mage. Was this pride, from getting a compliment from her guild master. She couldn’t tell, but it brought a sincere smile to her face. Lyserg had commended her for something she did, and it made her feel proud. Lucille stood, and bowed to her guild master. “You have opened my eyes master. I have been blind but now I can become even stronger for Tartarus.” Lucille kept her head bowed as she spoke. “You have shown your wisdom to me, and for that I can better myself for everyone. Thank you. I will not fail you.” Lucille was determined that things would be different, even if it took weeks, months or years. She would do what was necessary to grow stronger, and lose the ideals she currently held on loyalty, in order to better fit the mold that Lyserg wanted. No not wanted, needed.

And it didn’t matter what else occurred, so long as it helped her on her quest.

Lyserg felt a slight feeling of wariness fall upon him. He was unsure what he had just did to Lucille. Had he awoken her sense of self-fulfillment or just bent her to his will? As of now, he was in no place to tell. Only time was able to tell. And not even he was able to go that distance. He mustered Lucille, her posture still the same as before, her determination still the same as before. Her appearance didn't change. Her aura didn't change. He would know if the seed of self-improvement and free will inside her would sprout and grow or wither and die.

"Strong words Miss Grove. However, don't be too expectant. Optimism is never the root of success." Lyserg spoke in an authorative tone. He went to walk over to the door of the room glancing at her one last time as he was in the doorframe. "If there is anything bothering you Miss Grove, if you have any questions you need to ask, don't be hesistant to approach me. My ear is open for your calls. As yours are for mine. You may return to what you were doing, I thank you for coming here." With that, Lyserg drifted out of the room not turning around to see if she left the room as well.

"Unusual." He whispered to himself in a wonderous manner. "I think I like her. That might not be for the best." He added and furrowed his brows whilst tracing the form of his chinbeard with index finger and thumb. Trailing up the same steps as he trailed down when going to meet Lucille, he felt that their conversation was questionable. Lyserg knew people, but something felt off about the young lady. Somehow he had the feeling that there was something she wasn't showing, or perhaps telling him. It wasn't a sensation of Lucille outright hiding something from him, but as if there was something beneath the surface he needed to uncover by himself.

Reaching his office again, he looked at the opposite side of the entrance to his study. The entrance to his personal chambers were shut, as they were supposed to be. But a strange feeling emanated from them. He was just about to open the door to his workplace when it had hit him. He drifted over to his bedroom and carefully unlocked it and pulled. Inside, everything seemed regular. The bed was made, the small bookshelf in which he only held documents of personal importance was orderly and dusted off, his nighstand stood firmly at the right side of his bed.

He didn't exactly know what had called him in here, but positive that his subconscious was likely trying to tell him something, he moved over to his small bookshelf. Mustering the books, he noticed one that he himself wrote a long long time ago. A book on the Ark of Time itself and its many possibilities. Pulling it out and sitting down on his bed he flipped through it. Lyserg somehow instinctively landed on page 956 about two thirds through the literature. It read "Die Theorie des Zweiten Ursprungs". His eyes widened a bit. Then his forehead wrinkled and he sighed. "My thesis on the Second Origin..." He spoke to himself somewhat reluctantly. Closing the book, he stood up and pushed it back on the shelf going out of his bedroom, locking it and then moving over to his study. He forgot the thought that had just came up in his mind for now. It was unnecessary to think about for the time being. The opportunity would eventually present itself.
