The mint haired woman opened the storage compartment and pulled out her briefcase and a stuffed bear. She hugged the bear and set it down next to her, then popped open her briefcase. It was mostly pictures of her sister and simple children’s artwork, she blushed and closed it. Kaede was sitting in the back of a limousine, across from her superior. Their security detail was also there, but they seemed preoccupied with the view out the windows. This whole situation was just a little annoying, and none of it felt necessary. Thinking back, it really is not Lady Liu’s fault, not directly. She felt her diminutive boss needed to start wording her questions with more care. Or maybe Kaede herself just needed to get better at steering conversations to avoid those open ended questions. Earlier that day, during her weekly financial report briefing, funds were tight but still in the black when completely out of the blue the small woman asked how things were going around town. She asked how things were going.
Why would she word it like that!? I’m sure she meant: how are the various businesses handling themselves, but it was so vague! I had no choice. The mint haired woman told Lady Liu about every person who entered town above our target annual income, every VIP’s movements, she listed off everyone who had gone bankrupt, which ones could be useful if brought in. She told her which shops didn’t open on their normally scheduled days, how many children were born, split between visitors and locals. Lady Liu made no effort to finish the briefing there, so Kaede had to keep going! She listed off new construction, local weather and gang activities, despite them staying FAR from any company property this week.
The shorter woman still hadn’t responded so the accountant had to dig further still. Finally upon hearing the numbers for crime reports something piqued some interest. But not about pickpockets, the minor loan sharks or busted counterfeiting rings, Apparently there was a rash of missing children around town, mostly tourists, which could hurt the bottom line. She felt this really was an issue for the local constabulary. The real issue was all the information was a garbled mess of completely unreal things. There was no way Santa Claus, a man sized Jackalope and a Chupacabra were playing cards around town. People were complaining about men in black talking about aliens, and yet others that swear they were being chased by a Skinwalker. And yet it was the witch kidnapping children that drew her bosses attention.
Which brought everything up to date. The limo was nearing its destination, currently in the lantern district, driving to the edge of Hosenka… To look for some kind of cryptid. The accountant shifted in her seat before speaking. ”Lady Liu, do you really think this rumored creature is actually sitting out there, with the kidnapped children?” Kaede knew she had to be prepared regardless. The freshly minted financial executive checked both of her underslung shoulder holsters, her custom made pair of fifty caliber pistols, right where they should be, and loaded. Some would call them impractical, Kaede would tend to agree with those people, but she knew how to use them, and besides, they were under contract to ignore recoil, just as the magazines strapped to her thigh were contracted to reload themselves.
