Chili let a long, steamy breath leave his lip, the cold air tickling his nose as he walked down the lightly wet dock toward the boat he had acquired for his most recently accepted job. Even though Chili was not a fan of being out on the open sea, he'd never let fear stop him. Especially since this job seemed to be having a lot more going on with it than just what the request said.

He had arrived in Hargeon Town a couple days ago. Where a supposed sea monster was currently attacking the ships that would leave its ports. Though there was no real evidence of that.

Yes, ships had vanished, but no wreckage was found drifting anywhere, just the ship's cargo, which was weird. The townspeople had heard odd noises at night far off the coast, echoing eerily toward the port city when these attacks happened. Later the following morning, scouting crews would find the cargo of the missing ships floating about thirty miles out.

So it could be a creature that takes the whole ship in one go. However, there was something that Chili found odd about it all. Why the lack of wreckage? There was cargo left behind, which meant that pirates were not responsible. They would have taken the cargo goods along with everything else. A monster would have taken the cargo down with the ship.

With this in mind Chili had decided to do more research on the ships and their crews when he first arrived at Hargeon. It was easy to get the records from the local Dock Master. All he had to do was bribe the man for the information. The transaction went smoothly.

Five fishing vessels, three large trade ships, one carnival ship, and from what he could tell, two pirate vessels that had patrolled these waters. Eleven ships had gone missing in total. All crew, their belongings, and the ships all unaccounted for, just the cargo. Digging deeper, Chili figured following up on the ships' crew members would be a waste of time.

The families already convinced their loved ones were gone probably wouldn't want the speculation that something worse could have happened. However, he decided to check if any John Does had been recently added to the local morgue, hospital, or mental ward.

Lo and behold, after two days of cross-referencing dates that the ships had been reported missing, with dates that John Does were found, yielded a single result.

A man had washed ashore, his face horrifically damaged and disfigured by what the local report stated. The man in question had wandered through town, screaming incoherently until the local guards arrived. The man responded violently when approached but was apprehended without any problems. The man was deemed mentally deranged, suffering from hallucinations of a non-magical nature, and was put into the local ward.

Chili had visited John Doe, albeit he didn't get much out of the visit. The man had been in a padded white room, strapped to his bed, straight jacket wrapped around his torso, and rambling to himself. His face was bandaged up, all except for a single hole for his left eye to see out of.

Chili asked the man one question, "So, what happened to the ship you sailed on?"

The reaction he got told Chili enough, almost immediately the man began to flail against his restraints, his one bloodshot eye staring in hysterical fear into Chili's, his quiet rambling turning into screaming laughter.

"Don't let it touch your face! Don't let it touch your face! Hahaha, George let it touch his face, and now George is no longer George. He's swimming with fishies now that he let it touch his face! The thing in the deep stirs, dreamers, dream. We shall all belong to the deep soon! Haha!"

At that point, orderlies came rushing in with medication and promptly pushed Chili out.

That is how Chili came to be walking down the dock early this brisk morning. Hiring a crew to take him out to the open sea and explore some of the locations that left behind cargo had been found.

The ship in question was a standard-sized two-masted Brigitine. As he approached, members of the twenty-two-man crew could be seen scurrying about the ropes and deck, preparing her for departure.

As Chili arrived at the gangplank, he was greeted by the captain, a man of about six foot 2 inches with sleek blond hair beneath his captain's hat. Clad in a worn-out militairy captain's uniform of the Navy of Fiore.

"Ah, you must be Chili. That fiery orb that hangs above your head is distinctive, you know that lad? Well, come on board. We shall be departing soon. Just waiting on one last tag along."

This caused Chili to quirk an eyebrow. Who the hell else would be coming along for such a venture?

Private Fontaine had been deployed on a new mission. There had been alarming reports of ships suddenly vanishing, pirates or sea monsters were rumored to be the culprit. However, rumors provided no bearing, and rumors would certainly not be enough to explain to the grieving families of those missing crew members of the missing ships. Due to the nature of the problem, the Rune Knights had arranged a cooperated task force in hopes to solve the problem. Finnegan had done his research, going over files and reports. But there were clearly some portions that just didn't quite add up well. So, the Seventite wanderer decided it be best to meet up with the people he would be working with on said mission to simply get into the nitty gritty of this odd mystery.

The ginger haired Rune Knight sped through the streets of Hargon Town on his motorcycle. Like an angry beast his vehicles engine roared as he weaved through traffic, giving little regard to the fact that he was clearly speeding. If someone were to report him, Fin would deal with it later, after all it wouldn't be his first time getting his ass chewed for violating traffic laws. Eventually Fin rounded the corner and pulled up to the appointed meeting point. He would park his heavily modified motorcycle in the shelter of an open storage unit he had asked a friend ahead of time to prepare. The Rune knight would stop the engine and yank his keys out of the ignition and close the storage unit. With his hands on his hips he looked at the fine vessel he and his new companions would be traveling on. The scent of the sea lingered in the air and Finnegan happily breathed it in. "It's be awhile..." Fin muttered to him self with a smirk upon his lips. With hand in his pockets he made his way a board the ship.

The Rune Knight first took off his sunglasses he was wearing tucking it in his inner coat pocket. Fin then proceeded to give the captain a salute before turning to the young man besides him. "Top of the mornin' to ya lads. I'm Private Finnegan Fontaine, combat corps, from the Rune Knights." Fontaine gave the two gentleman a nod of respect. He would shift his gaze from the captain to the young man beside him. Private Fontaine noticed the odd flame above the individuals head, his sky blue eyes narrowed out of curiosity. The young mans magical aura felt similar, as if Fin had encountered something equivalent to it in the past. However, Fin was not the type of man to pry, he simply dismissed it and treated the young man before him normally.

Private Fontaine would then offer his hand for a handshake to Chili out of respect. "I certainly look forward to be working with you lads." Fin stated with a bright and warm smile. "Just let me know what I can do to help, and I'll do what I can, yeah?" Fin chuckled.

Chili blinked a few times in confusion, not to the offer of the handshake. He respectfully shook the man's hand. No, his confusion was caused by one thought. "Does this guy think I'm a member of the crew?" Chili didn't let this thought dwell long as he let the confusion pass along with the issue. It didn't matter who this guy thought Chili was. What mattered was who he was.

A freaking Rune Knight! Inwardly cringing, Chili kept his cool even as he wanted to curse his rotten luck.

Chili had nothing against them, but as someone who had committed an atrocity three years ago in this town, he preferred not to be around justice keepers. Albeit the crime was the turning point in his life that set him on a better path, the path of a good person. However, getting there had cost too many lives.

Thankfully, no one knew what really happened that day. The only thing known was three years ago, a slaver vessel had caught fire at sea, and all persons on board had been lost, either to the fire or the sea.

Mentally shaking the memories from his head. Chili gave a friendly smile to the younger man as he spoke, his tone light, "Happy to make your acquaintance Finnegan. I am Chili Thompson, a random mage slash investigator who happens to have bartered his way onto this little venture. Looking forward to working with ya as well, mate."

As the introduction went on. The captain smiled as he turned and yelled across the deck in a jubilant yet commanding voice, "Alright! Lads! Everyone is on board and accounted for! Now get that main sail unfurled! Helmsman, take us out and head towards the first coordinates as soon as she is ready!"

Turning back to the two young men, the captain spoke, his voice the same but nowhere near as loud.

"We don't have many bunk places to offer. However, considering the two of you are esteemed guests, I spoke to my first mate, and he has agreed to bunk with the men so that you two may use his cabin."

Chili quirked an eyebrow at this. How the hell was he esteemed? Chili got the Rune Knight being called that, but himself? He was a working mage trying to help, so he could see the captain being extra generous to him. However, it still felt odd. Chili filed that away in his brain for later, not wanting to focus too much on his paranoid thoughts until he was alone.

As the captain turned and headed to speak with the helmsman, the crew scurried about doing their different jobs and tasks.
Chili turned to speak to Finnegan again, this time allowing himself to analyze the man in front of him.

The young man seemed full of energy and happy as a clam. Even though part of that seemed genuine, Chili could tell something was off. Maybe because he too. Used cheerfulness to hide other aspects beneath the surface, Chili had a feeling that there was more to Finnegan than what was seen with the naked eye.

Which was good with Chili. People were more enjoyable to be around when they were multidimensional thinkers with complex personalities, not flat, shallow individuals who may as well exit in two-d.

The ship slowly left port and headed for its first destination. Careening in the water as the sails caught the wind. The vessel heeled a little as it gained speed.

Hands resting in his blazer pocket, Chili asked his question. His voice curious and relaxed, "So, considering you are a Rune Knight, you probably had access to the reports. I've read most of them myself. You up to take our conversation to the first mate's cabin and pick each other's brains on the matter?"
