It had been just over a year since Odhran was last in Seven. Since crossing the border into Fiore, by complete accident, mind, Odhran had somewhat forgotten what his homeland looked like. Of course, by this point, he was a world traveler. He was in Fiore, now he lived in Sin, alongside his guildmate that joined in this quest with him, Faustein.

"Seven certainly is a beautiful country, isn't it?" he asked as they neared a village that made itself around this fountain of youth. His own hometown was nearby, but he unfortunately did not have the time to visit his parents and sister. Instead, he had work to do. He had come to this fountain many times in his past, chatting it up with the slightly celestial in nature guardian. She liked him, he thought.  She at least recognized his astounding pedigree as a god of celestial spirits. Odhran passed through the town, some of the people recognizing him despite the year it had been since he last was here. Of course, he chatted with them for a bit, but soon enough he found himself returning to that wellspring of eternal youth. The fountain looked beautiful as always, the serene blue hue of the waterfall behind it painting this area in more of a light than normal. Right where Odhran recognized and remembered a grassy island, instead sat a pillar of obsidian.

"That certainly is a rock," Odhran quipped, stepping through the mushy, sandy soil where the fountain's waters usually flowed. "And if I recall, that isle in the middle housed the source? Never really understood why the fountain worked like that."

"Even though I told you every single time you came around here?" a familiar voice asked.

Odhran lackadaisically turned to see the guardian of the fountain, looking surprisingly cross with him. "Oh. Long time no see, Aoife!"

The guardian clicked her tongue at the native of Seven. "At least you remembered my name."

Odhran smiled a bit. "Of course I do! You were the only person outside of my family and Arnaluuk that would talk to me!"

The guardian raised an eyebrow. "Well, you certainly haven't lost your bluntness. I sense that you've grown more powerful. The King's granted you more keys?"

Odhran gave a thumbs up. "You know it! I know you remember Arnaluuk and Lupa and Scorpio, but I've got a bunch more now."

Aoife rolled her eyes. "Well, hopefully one of them can find a way to open the fountain back up. One of your Spirits, you, or your companion here." She turned to face Faustein. "Might I ask your name?" She waited for his response. "I am Aoife Cyhiraeth, guardian of this spring. I've known Odhran for some time, and word certainly has come around that a certain someone has been making a name for himself." She glared at Odhran at the mention of a "certain someone." "I do hope you're keeping him in line. He certainly can be a difficult one to keep control of." She sighed, walking over towards the boulder in the center of her spring. "Beneath this obsidian is the source. Since Odhran forgot, despite me telling him numerous times, I'll explain a bit. There's a small isle beneath there with a shrine to myself. The shrine's power seeps into the isle beneath, causing the pools of water beneath to flow eternally. Unfortunately, I cannot do anything about this myself. My power is weakened from the shrine's capturing, and no one has figured out how to get through the obsidian shell."

"How did it get there, anyways?" Odhran asked, knocking on the obsidian. Judging by the pain in his hand, it was real obsidian.

    "Balor."

Odhran nodded his head in realization. "Figured it had to do with Balor. Jealousy?"

Aoife shrugged. "Who knows? Either way, I have faith that you'll be able to break through this, Odhran. And if not you or your Spirits, perhaps Faustein can."

Odhran gave a thumbs up of approval before turning to his fellow member of Elysium. "Right, so our job is to break this obsidian open, but it is magical obsidian, so it's a bit tougher than you'd think. Got any ideas? I'm sure you could use some of your sciencey stuff and-"

"Please don't suggest blowing it up. It could ruin the shrine."

"Well, there goes my first plan. Anyways, any other plans?"

"FOR MAD SCIENCE!! TIME TO GET EXCITED, YOU GUYS."

It had been some time after Faustein’s latest adventure, that being the rather intense border clash between Bellum and Pergrande in which Faustein had served on the side of Bellum against Pergrande, working in a squadron of 4 total with three others beside him and one of them being a fellow Elysium guildmate who was a young woman called “Maddox”. Since then, Faustein had once again gotten back to his daily routine of being a professional physician scientist mage and of course, to his one true love beyond all else, aka his ongoing, ever-burgeoning mad science research. So, time had marched on once more for him as it had always done after a major adventure. However, before too long, he had been called upon to serve again, this time as a job partner for another of his guildmates, this one being a young man named “Odhran Aegisbane”. The work looming before him this time had been a request from the nation of Seven involving an apparently giant megalith made entirely of obsidian which had allegedly been blocking their legendary fountain of youth.

Well now, this ought to be an intriguing little expedition…who knows, if the Norns will it so, maybe I can procure some of that miracle water for my research sample collection

Faustein had mused while listening to “Odhran” talk about this job request from Seven. This had been a few days prior to the current time and brings the story up till this point. Faustein’s current situation was one wherein he was currently trekking along in the nation of Seven towards their fountain of youth destination along with “Odhran” while taking in the experiences along the way and recording them for future research purposes in the database stored within his cyborg brain. So, he only was paying half attention to what “Odhran” was saying with the other half being on the spring guardian, “Aoife” and her replies to “Odhran”. Where appropriate, he was nodding to show he was paying attention, though to be honest, his mind was mostly preoccupied with devising a solution to the main objective of the job at hand, aka removing the giant obsidian megalith from the spring and unblocking it for their clients. At last, he was consulted for his opinion about the matter again and so he responded, first by asking the obvious question

Before that, what if any, other methods have already been tried on this megalith? Depending on that data, we can exclude courses of action that will most likely be failures and thus narrow our focus to merely those will have the highest success probability in this situation, thereby increasing our overall work output efficiency.

Then, he fell silent and waited for either “Odhran” or “Aoife” to enlighten him about the past efforts to remove the obsidian megalith. That said, he did have about 100 different potential plans in mind, but he decided to not reveal them just yet, at least not until he had more situational data to include in his solution formula.

"Mostly magics," Aoife answered. "Most have ended in just backfiring on themselves. The obsidian has a slight bit of a reflective property to it. In terms of physical means, it is primarily attempts to lift the stone. Using chemicals would not be recommended. I would prefer that you not poison my spring, Faustein."

Odhran shrugged. "Stand aside, Faustein! I shall take care of this with little effort! Behold, the strength of the Ace of Creation!"

Odhran snapped, a simple steel shovel manifesting in his hand. He stuck it underneath the obsidian and tried lifting, unsurprisingly to no avail. "Well, there goes plan number two."

Aoife gave an exasperated blink. "You really expected that to do something?"

Odhran smiled. "Of course! Sometimes, the most simple answer is the best answer! Look, Aoife, I'm sure there's definitely some times that it's been overthunk when the answer is just to punch it!"

Aoife and Odhran spent a moment staring at each other, Odhran taking a step forwards. "You are not going to punch the obelisk."

"I am going to punch the obelisk."

    "That's stupid."

    "But it might work."

    "Bigger men have punched it."

    "Yeah but I'm special."

Aoife scoffed. "You're right about that..."

Odhran brushed aside the comment, delivering a hearty punch to the side of the obelisk. Perhaps to be expected, his hand shattered into many little pieces while the obelisk remained standing, completely unfettered by his punch. "Well."

    "Did the punch work?"

Odhran put the broken hand to his chin. "It appears not to have worked."

    "I never would have guessed..."

"You do your thinking thing, Faust. I'll take care of the more obvious answers."

At that, Odhran cracked his knuckles, his hand conveniently repairing with that. He soon sprouted wings, taking flight to the top of the obelisk and delivering an elbow drop to it. Much like with his attempt at punching the obelisk, the only result was a shattered elbow for the God of Celestial Spirits.

"You sure you don't want it blown up?"

    "Yes."

Odhran pouted a bit, marking Dennis off of his list of plans. Without thinking, he summoned forth a bazooka, which immediately got Aoife to float up, slap him, and toss the rocket launcher away. Odhran was a little bit bitter about that, but he figured there was little to be done about it. "Alright, I got another plan. That doesn't involve explosions. Maybe. It could involve explosions."

    "No explosions."

Odhran sighed, rolling his eyes. He fluttered down to the base of the obelisk, manifesting Hallow's Phantom. The mysterious projection's arms grabbed hold of the bottom of the obelisk, lifting with all of its might. To Odhran's legitimate surprise, all the lifting from the Phantom failed to remove the pillar, though it did manage to move it slightly.

"Aha! See! If I do this enough!"

Aoife slapped Odhran again. "Dumbass! You got it more stuck!"

Odhran looked over to see that what Aoife said was, in fact, true. "Huh. That's rather inconvenient." Aoife prepared to slap him again, but Odhran hastily raised his arms. "Wait! Wait! I got a better idea! You seem really on edge, Aoife. How's about you just... just relax and have some tea?" He waved his hand, summoning forth a tea set and table, pouring out some of Aoife's favorite tea.

Aoife sighed. "Fine. But you better hope your compatriot has better ideas, got it?"

Odhran gave a thumbs up. "He learned from me, of course he will succeed!"

Aoife's head collided with the table. "I'm doomed...

"FOR MAD SCIENCE!! TIME TO GET EXCITED, YOU GUYS."

Faustein took in all that Aoife said and remarked with a blank face as the urge for naughtiness had overtaken him just then due to his whimsical nature

Poison this oh so sacrosanct spring? Moi? No why would I ever want to do something so terribly…

He paused for dramatic effect and then ended his sentence while having a mischievous smirk on it, his voice straining with the effort of suppressing an oncoming maniacal laugh which was apparently itching to burst out

    …amusing?

After that, he fell silent, calmed down, and watch Odhran attempt whatever he could to remove the obsidian obelisk, but to no avail

So…this is one job where brute force is NOT the solution, eh? Oh well, I suppose for a job of this caliber more finesse than force is required after all

He mused silently for a moment or two before inquiring of Aoife about all previous attempts to remove the obsidian obelisk

So the obsidian comprising this obstacle is able to reflect magic, but was this magic attempted on it of the offensive, destructive kind…or was it more utilitarian in nature? And regarding the more mundane methods used, how much of a mechanical advantage did the natives deploy in their efforts?

While he was saying this, he noticed Odhran’s suggestion that Aoife have some calming tea and thus, he set about conjuring up a cup of nice, jasmine tea for her which was calibrated to calm the drinker down to whatever extent possible. Within a few minutes, he finished preparing said cup of perfectly brewed jasmine tea and handed to Aoife to drink if she so chose to do so and then waited for her to reply to his further queries.
