Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
It had been quite some time since they had gone to the beach and relaxed. Granted, relaxing anywhere was much harder to do while several months pregnant with twins, but that was hardly a source of complaint for Serilda. Besides, after everything they had been through recently, they deserved some down time. Plus, it was always nice to see Vandrad and Mercury. Mythal and his adoptive brother had grown quite close to one another since they met, and Serilda felt that bond had only deepened once they had been able to finally connect Vandrad with his birth father. The Bellum prince had opened up more and more as time went on, and it was great to watch their friendship blossom. And Mercury, well… Mercury was always a source of great amusement, even if it was mostly at Vandrad’s expense most of the time. And while the mysterious woman still had yet to talk about herself very much over the course of the last year, she had proven her reliability and put her own life on the line for them in ways that Mythal and Serilda would never be able to repay, so they were more than happy for her company.

At this point, the only thing about today that was partially out of left field was that Serilda and Mythal had also taken the time to invite Shen Kadokawa. The former staff sergeant had only recently returned to Fiore after months of immeasurable hardship following his involvement in the recent skirmishes that had taken place along the border between Pergrande and Bellum. The poor young man had lost his entire squad and been the only survivor of his battle, forced to travel across the lands by foot in order to make it back to Fiore and the Rune Knights months later, only to find that much of his home life had also changed in that time. It had been a jarring experience, and while she didn’t say as much out loud Serilda was worried about his emotional health. They had decided to encourage Shen, now their most recently promoted general, to join them at the beach festival in hopes that a bit of leisure time would do him some good.

Speaking of leisure time, Serilda was making full use of exactly that. Given how far along she was there was little she could do regarding most festivities, so upon arriving at the beach in Hargeon and finding a spot for them to set themselves up, the noblewoman had sat down in a reclined beach chair beneath the shade of a large umbrella and simply relaxed, enjoying the warm air mixed with the cool breeze and the salty scent of the ocean. In her hand was a cold can of sweet iced tea that she sipped from occasionally to keep from overheating. Nearby, Xiuhcoatl was rough housing in the sand with her brother Gren, Mythal’s wolf that had been born to the same parents as Xiuh, though from a younger litter.

With a soft, happy sigh, Serilda glanced around the beach to check on the others. Mercury had managed to convince some of their party to form a beach volleyball team with her. Interestingly enough, Victoria had expressed an interest in giving the sport a go. The Seal of Conquest had shed her armor for a crimson colored two piece that showed off exactly how good a shape she was in, despite her old age. Serilda watched from afar with a smile as the match commenced, wondering how hard the rest of the party was having to work to hold their strengths back in order to keep from annihilating the team on the other side of the net...

“Heads up!”

Somehow Mythal had been talked into participating in beach volleyball. Frankly, he hadn’t quite figured out how that had happened. One minute they had been setting up on the beach and he was quite pleased to simply lie back and enjoy the sun. The next thing he knew, he was suddenly placed in formation, with Vandrad and Gren talking strategy against the other team. Who, by the way, were a bunch of gym rats who looked pretty damn confident in their abilities. They were high fiving one another, making gestures and blowing kisses to the girls watching from the sidelines. Granted, a few of the girls were returning the suggestive flirtations but they also seemed to be transfixed on Mythal’s team. They seemed quite pleased at the sight of the former Rune Knight Gren, who was far too fit for an old man and for Vandrad, who was, understandably, ripped. Between the two of them, the Rune Knight Director was sure they could bench the entire other team.

He’d really just come along as a means of getting away from the work. The promise of getting in a beach chair, throwing back some beers and just ignoring responsibilities for the day was far too enticing to pass up. Plus the opportunity to spend time with Vandrad, Mercury and Gren was always a welcome one. In fact, it was bound to be the first official family outing that didn’t directly involve danger or bloodshed. His idea of fun, though, was to sit beside his future wife and actually relax, not smack around an inflated ball. But that choice was ripped out of his hands, fast forwarding to him watching as the other team gathered in their lines and prepared to serve.

There was the fact that all of them on their team were obnoxiously strong; Mythal, Mercury, Vandrad and Gren were powerful wizards in their own right. Somehow they had to try not to annihilate the ball and maintain their strength in the heat of competition. That probably wouldn’t be too hard for Mythal, as he didn’t plan on getting caught up in the frenzy as much but he could already picture Vandrad going to hit the ball and ripping a hole through it with one swing. He felt a large hand smack him on the back and he glanced over at his adoptive father, grinning from ear to ear. The older man was wearing a red boxer-cut swimsuit that was a little short around his thighs. The fact that he found a bathing suit that fit at all was remarkable enough.

But before he could speak to the former Rune Knight, he was barking about the ball. Mythal turned his attention around in time to watch the other team serve, delivering a hard hit that sent the ball spiraling through the air. It was coming right for him so, trying to figure out the best way to return it, he halfheartedly wrapped his hands together and brought it up in an attempt to keep it airborne. Yet just before it hit his wrists, the ball suddenly jerked in a half circle around his arms, trying to slide past him. Luckily, Mythal’s instincts were quick and in an equally sudden move, he dropped his arms down around the ball and managed to smack it upwards.

A crack of thunder ripped the air behind him as Gren launched himself into the air, spinning like a man half his age. Then he brought his hand around and punched the ball, sending it back from whence it came. Sparks of lightning glistened the surface of the playball as it rocketed through the air, slamming into the sand just past the outstretched hands of a diving player.

“Nice one, Mythal!” Gren said as he landed with a heavy thump, shaking the sand beneath their feet. The Slayer could only blink in surprise as it finally dawned on him that this wasn’t some vanilla game but rather one that did involve using magic. The other team had used it on the ball and Gren had returned it in kind.

Well then. Maybe this wouldn’t be as boring as he once thought.

Mercury Banner
Cunning is the art of concealing our own defects
and discovering other peoples' weaknesses.
Stars that man is fine…”

It wasn’t just the women on the side lines that were preoccupied with the sight of Gren’s ass in those all too tight swim trunks. Even if Mercury cared to exercise a shred of restraint when it came to checking out Vandrad and Mythal’s father -- which, to no one’s surprise, she did not -- it simply would not have been possible today. Mercury knew exactly how big the older man was in every aspect of the phrase, and there was simply no mistaking it in those shorts. She also knew exactly what it was he could do with all that bulk, and it was bringing back some great memories.

And hilariously, she wasn’t the only one on their team that was taking a gander. Mercury and Victoria were standing nearest to each other on their side of the court, and the Nephilim had easily caught Mercury’s murmured comment. “I’d have to agree,” Victoria replied quietly enough that only Mercury would have heard her, casting the Xocili a teasing, knowing smirk. “I don’t typically go for mortals, but I can’t say I wouldn’t make an exception for that one.”

Mercury couldn’t help but grin back at the woman. “Careful there, Vic. First Themmy, now Big Daddy… You’re gonna wind up developing a taste for us mortals.”

The conquoress laughed merrily. “Trust me, Themmy is in a league all her own.”

“Ugh, ain’t that the fuckin’ truth.”

Oblivious to the deeper meaning that Victoria had hinted at, Mercury allowed herself an odd moment to connect with the older woman. The Silver Wolf mage was still extremely intimidated by Victoria. She had not really seen the Seal in action during the events of the graveyard, but it was clear that her power rivaled that of Serilda’s, if not exceeded it, and that was more than enough to spook the woman that was still trying to come to terms with her recent spiritual awakening. Still, Victoria seemed friendly enough, if a bit on the aloof side. So the more time Mercury spent with Mythal and Serilda, the more exposure she got to both of their Seals in order to start feeling a bit more comfortable around them, though frankly she felt like she and Lux had gotten along fairly well from the beginning, if only because they had similar senses of humor and were rather mischievous.

Gren’s voice drew their attention back to the game, where the other team was serving the ball. It careened right toward Mythal, who had been the most reluctant to join them but was participating nonetheless. The director almost missed it as it suddenly swerved to the side, but his instincts kicked in and he compensated quickly for the change, knocking the ball upward with enough height that Gren had the perfect opening to leap into the air and, with the aid of his lightning magic, crack the ball right down on the other side of the net and onto the sand. “Fuck yeah! That’s how it’s done boys!” Enthusiastically, she gave Mythal a high five and slapped Gren shamelessly on his ass -- mostly to get a rise out of the ladies on the side lines. Mercury had never really played a sport like this before, and it was obvious that she was having the time of her life with the physical competition.

Their team rotated now that it was their ball, and it was Mercury’s turn to serve. Standing behind the court like, she idly spun the ball on her palm a few times waiting for the teams to be ready and for the referee to blow the whistle. Then, she lobbed the ball high into the air and made a casual running leap toward it, jump serving the ball to the other side without any obvious use of magic. The other team rushed to get under the ball, one of their members passing it up to the setter who managed to shoot it over to their outside hitter. Unfortunately for them, Victoria was right there. Much like Gren, she was far too strong for her age, and her powerful leg muscles launched her up out of the sand so she could throw her arms up above the net, blocking the ball from getting hit onto their side of the court and earning them another point as the opposing team failed to recover the shank. With a smug grin, the Seal turned toward the others to celebrate the point.

"Unbelievable.”

One might think that Vandrad was upset over the fact that Mercury was eyeing his father up and down like he was a piece of meat. Worse even was that the Seal of Conquest, Victoria, had apparently decided to join in and agreed with the patronizing sentiment. After all, any normal person would probably be mortified that their parent was being stripped down in the heads of several women in the nearby area. But the prince was unlike others, having grown up in such an open and physical family as the duWolff clan. And Mercury did very little to hide her appreciation of others or her machinations with others, now that they had a far more open and honest communication. The fact that she slept with his father meant very little in the long run, as the man had been absent for so long.

What was aggravating was the fact that it was causing a distraction to the game. Vandrad had hesitantly agreed to come to this charade, for the singular purpose of spending time with his family -- at least, one side of it. He’d opted out of his responsibilities as an Ace for Fairy Tail and to his own personal training, a tentpole he didn’t very easily walk away from. It was even more annoying as he very well knew that he’d be simply lying about and hanging out rather than doing anything trying. But his agreement and patience had been rewarded and shortly after arriving, the group had collectively decided on taking part in the nearby volleyball game. The thrill of competition was one that Vandrad rarely ever passed up and it meant that he had the opportunity to actually get a workout in, if only in the most miniscule of frames. He had agreed wholeheartedly and urged that Mythal participate, leaving the younger man unable to deny him.

Yet now that they were here, everyone was too busy peacocking, save for the Rune Knight Director and the ones that were ogling. The other team was made up of men who fancied the gym but clearly in an attempt to pack on muscle and attract mates. The women were fawning over them, sure, but more infuriatingly was the attention being tossed their way. Gren had a lot of it but Vandrad and Mythal had plenty of appreciative ladies and men from the sidelines. The prince scoffed and shook his head, annoyed to his core that showboating was going on before the game even started. Thank Arcanos that finally the other team lined up and with a warning from Gren, they started. The ball went to Mythal first and the enchanted orb damn near slipped past the Slayer’s hands before he was able to get his bearings and rally. Gren then was able to launch himself up and deliver a hefty blow, scoring them a point. Mercury, overenthusiastic as she was, high-fived his brother and then gave his father a firm slap on the ass.

They rotated in kind, putting Mercury in the spot of the server. She delivered a good pitch, sending it volleying over with ease. The other team moved to pass it amongst themselves and then, just as they were getting ready to spike it over the net, Victoria leapt up and blocked it, completely bringing their offense to a complete stop and scoring their team another point. Two nothing. Now it was time for Vandrad to cycle up to the net, giving him a decent spot to get into the action.

“Man, these old people are tough!” One of the other team members said to his friend.

“It’s fine, this is our comeback. The dwarf is up front now,” the friend replied, grinning and giving Vandrad a curt upward nod. “Hope you’re ready, hairline. I’m going to blow this ball over your head so hard, it’ll make your hair look even stupider.”

Vandrad’s face remained completely neutral at the comments, his eyes fixated on the grinning man with a cold, calculated stare. Then, slowly, his mouth opened into a smirk that would have rendered others as putty and indeed, a few of the other team seemed to lose their jovial mood at the wicked look. Vandrad cocked his head to the side to look over his shoulder, giving his attention to his own team. "Get it to me,” he said simply.

Gren was shaking his head, concerned over the damage that his son was about to bring upon the other team. But even he couldn’t help but smile a little and gave him a nod. They set themselves and then the serve came in, a wave of water erupting in the aftermath of the serve. The other team had used some kind of spell to materialize a sea wave, crashing it through the net and over the rest of them. They didn’t seem to understand the caliber of wizards they were dealing with, as Gren easily planted himself against the water and managed to knock the ball high into the air. In fact, he served it up higher than it should normally go, perhaps in anticipation of what Vandrad was about to do. From the heart of the wave came Vandrad, bursting out from the water with his sleek, blue Empowerment. He shot into the air, his body painted against the sky for only the briefest of moments before his fist swung forward, slamming into the ball.

If Gren’s hit had been impressive, the prince’s was downright perfection… except no one on the other side even saw it. The ball slammed into the sand with such force that it detonated the ground beneath them, causing a hump of golden grain to swallow up the team. In one quick hit, Vandrad had upended the other side of the court and half-buried the opposing team in the sand. Legs, arms and heads stuck out from heavy mounds, the team frantic to free themselves as they yelled at one another for help.

Vandrad slowly floated down and landed on the net with a single foot, the other slightly tucked as he put on an impressive balancing act. "Aw, all that muscle and you can’t even pull yourself out from some sand,” the prince mocked the former smiling man, now wearing a scowl and his hair tousled from sand and gravity. "I believe that’s game,” he said, turning to look back at his team.

“Even if it wasn’t, I get the feelin’ they ain’t gonna wanna play with us anymore,” Gren said with a chuckle. “Pro’lly best we find somethin’ else to do.”

In an almost animated flash, a gaggle of women appeared around Gren. “We can find something!” they almost cried in tandem, each one vying for his attention more than the other. The former Rune Knight was stunned -- he had no idea how to handle the situation and looked to the others for some kind of escape.

Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
Serilda watched from afar as the group played against the other team with a small smile on her face. She knew Mythal wasn’t exactly thrilled to have been roped into the sport, but she was glad he had let himself be pulled along. It was warming to see him spending some recreational time with his dad and brother, having a real family for the first time in a very long time. It was also hilarious to see how much their little team was being fawned over by many of the spectators, particularly Gren. Mythal’s father was in exceptionally good shape for his age, and there was certainly an unbiased part of her that could recognize how attractive he was, but unlike Mercury, Serilda had zero interest in even daydreaming about her future father-in-law like that. As such, the entire scene was immensely entertaining to her.

And it only became more so when the match went on for only a couple rounds before Vandrad practically destroyed the court, leaping up well into the air and spiking the ball so hard into the sand that a crater formed and half buried the other team. Serilda was drinking from her tea and choked briefly on the liquid as she tried to laugh mid gulp, causing some of the drink to get caught in her throat. The noblewoman coughed a couple times to clear it, doing her best to restrain her laughter as the spectators could only look on in shock before a few people went in to carefully try to start prying the other team out. Someone must have decided that was enough, because only seconds later a small group of women were suddenly clamoring around the former Rune Knight, vying for his attention and leaving Gren looking more than a little perplexed.

Chuckling a bit to herself after she had calmed down, Serilda sighed happily and looked around a bit. Sitting and relaxing was all well and good, particularly when she was this far along to giving birth, but she had been relaxing since they got here and she was starting to feel a little stiff. It would be nice to get up and move around a bit. Carefully rising to her feet and instructing the wolves to stay and watch their little beach camp, Serilda found herself wandering toward the food stations. Even from a distance she could smell nearly everything they had available. There was lots of fish and other sea foods, which was befitting for a gathering such as this, but there were also a lot of other dishes like potato salads, barbecue, rice, fruits and vegetables, plenty of desserts. And, all of it was free.

So, she got in line and grabbed a plate, putting a little bit of this and a little bit of that together for a proper surf and turf meal. Serilda even tried bits and pieces of things on her plate as she made her way through the line, and most of it was quite delicious. By the time she reached the end, she was greeted with a woman that was passing out leis to each person that had come through. With a smile and a thanks, she let the woman drape one of the delicate rings of flowers around her neck and then carefully made her way back to the little campsite with her food. Letting the plate hover in the air so she could have her hands free, Serilda gently sat back down and then took the plate once more, eating the feast at a comfortable pace and enjoying the meal as she relaxed again.

Well this took a turn quickly.

In one moment Mythal was, just barely, able to save the volleyball from colliding with the sand and managed to knock it up, prepping his father for a hard delivered hit that scored them a point. They rotated, as apparently was custom for the sport, and then Mercury was delivering the serve. The other team managed to juggle the ball but just as they were going for a return in an attempt to score, Victoria leapt up and blocked them. It cut the ball’s progression and earned them yet another point. So once more they rotated and a few members of the other team started making snide remarks about Vandrad. Though the prince held his poise for the most part, he turned his head just enough to look at the rest of his team and insist the ball go to him. “This ain’t gonna end well…” Mythal muttered as he halfway got in a ready stance. The ball came and Gren knocked it up but at the same time, the other team used their magic to send a wave of water at them. Annoying for the most part, as the current really wasn’t that strong. But then Vandrad was shooting into the air, powered up from his magic and when he delivered the return, he hit the ball so hard it bottomed out the ground. The ball disappeared into the sand and the other team was thrown for a loop, winding up half-buried in the grains while the prince landed and idly teased them.

And like that, they’d won. A few of the spectators clapped, mostly still in awe from the sheer force of the delivery Vandrad had just used. Several women came clamoring over to Gren, seeking his attention. He looked utterly perplexed by the gaggle of women about him and Mythal figured this was as good a time as any to skip out and get back to the chairs. Mercury and Vandrad seemed dead set on taking part in some kind of surfing contest and Gren was having to deal with the women. But before he could fully turn and leave, the big hand of the former Knight slapped down on his shoulder. “Sorry ladies but I’m goin’ to play some horseshoes with my son and my friend here,” he said, indicating Victoria.

The collective groan from the women was loud and obnoxious but slowly they cleared out, defeated. The former Knight chuckled as he glanced between the Rune Knight Director and the Seal. “C’mon, let’s get some toss in.”

“I’m not exactly what one would call an expert at these kinda games,” Mythal said, trying to disway his adoptive father.

“Nonsense. All ya do is toss the horseshoe and see who gets closer. It’s easy,” Gren explained as he guided them over to the tossing area. Two bars had been embedded in the sand and several shoes were piled near them, ready for any player to pick up. Gren set Mythal in place and went to retrieve the shoes, bringing them back and offering two to Victoria. “Ladies first,” he said to her with a well-meaning smile.

Meanwhile, far away from the fun and games, Lux was pulling away from a drink counter. He’d offered to go get refills on the drinks for everyone -- a very un-Lux thing to do but he’d apparently been sincere. “I can’t believe mortals charge such ridiculous amounts for liquids. Liquids,” he groaned as he looked at cups in the tray. “You all deserve to burn!” he called back to the tender of the counter, though his direction may have honestly just been all of the people around him. He was so distracted disparaging the other people that he didn’t even realize he’d walked into the middle of a game. The limbo contest was in full swing and anyone was allowed to join but by now, the bar was so low that no normal human being would be able to bend down underneath it without falling. As Lux turned, he suddenly looked down in shock to see a bar at his knees.

Now the normal reaction would have been to jump over it and he made to do so, the tray being tossed straight up. But as he made to pull his leg up, it dragged and got caught in the sand, causing him to topple to the side. Now starting to fall, the Lightbringer pivoted his entire body and swung down underneath the bar, bringing his other leg out to catch himself as he folded back up into an upright position. Then his attention went up and his hand snapped out to catch the drink tray before it spilled any of the liquids. A cheer went up around him from the people watching, the lot of them clapping. One of the women dressed in a hula skirt came over to him and draped a lei around his neck as he looked around, bewildered. “Yeah thanks, I know I’m impressive,” he said, deciding to take the praise for… well, whatever it was they were clapping for. He was pretty handsome after all.

With that silliness out of the way, he walked back to the beach and pulled out one of the drinks. “Here ya go, Serilda. Refill.” As he handed that off to her, he placed the tray in the sand and then plopped into one of the folding chairs, looking at where the rest of their group had gone. “So trolldoll and Amethyst look like they’re going to… ride that flatboard on the water? And Mythal, Old Mythal and my sister are throwing metal U’s at a rod.” He brought the straw up to his drink and took a loud sip from it. “Mortals have such strange customs.”

Mercury Banner
Cunning is the art of concealing our own defects
and discovering other peoples' weaknesses.
One of Mercury’s favorite pastimes was simply being present to witness other people trying to pick on the prince in regard to his height and hair. Vandrad wasn’t even a little self conscious about either, and it showed in the way he gave his cruel smirk to his would-be bullies. “Mmph. I love it when I get a free show,” she said, more to herself than anyone else, clearly more openly amused by the exchange than Gren was. The ball was served and accompanied by a literal wave of water that was meant to throw their team off, though it did little good. Not a single person on their team was moved by the miniature tsunami, not even Mercury or Victoria, who hadn’t really used any magic thus far in the game. Gren set the ball up for Vandrad ridiculously high, but that was no matter for the Fairy Tail ace, who threw on his empowerment, leaping high up into the air and crashing the ball down with such force that it quite literally buried the other team.

Mercury cackled wildly as he lowered himself down onto the net and mocked the people on the other side. She had half a mind to join in, but found herself distracted as she caught Victoria eying the prince with a considering glance. The Xocili grinned. “That taste for mortal release rearing its ugly head again? I told you, you gotta be careful.”

The seal chuckled. “Hardly. I just didn’t get to see him fight, back in the graveyard. Or anyone else, really. He has very unusual magic. I haven’t seen someone channel ethernano so powerfully in quite some time.”

“He certainly worked hard for it. Hell, training’s the only thing he really cares about. You should have seen how much of a stink he put up about taking a single day off to come here.”

“That so? Interesting.”

It was all the exchange the two of them would get before both women succumbed to a health round of laughter as Gren was surrounded by a flock of eager young women. The older man was practically begging the others with his eyes to help him find a way out, and of course there was exactly one person in the group that was only going to make that worse. Wandering past the small group, Mercury gave Gren the cheekiest of grins as she informed his entourage, “Trust me, ladies. You can’t handle what he’s packing.”

Without even waiting for a response, she continued to walk by and beckoned to Vandrad. “Alright, killer. Since you destroyed the volleyball court and stole all my fun, you get to teach me how to surf.”

As they wandered off, Gren finally managed to use Mythal and Victoria to pull himself away from all the ladies, using them as an excuse to get away. The seal chuckled as the women voiced their disappointment. “Very well. I suppose it wouldn’t hurt to continue participating in a few more of these odd mortal customs.” She followed the two men along as they discussed the game. When they found an empty station, Gren retrieved a few horseshoes and offered two of them to Victoria. “Well, Lux isn’t here to start us off.. But I guess I can take up the mantle for him.” She smirked at Gren, more than happy to take a cheap shot at her brother when he wasn’t around, before stepping up to plate.

Her first toss overshot the bar a bit. While Victoria was a master of combat, she hardly ever played silly games like this which required an entirely different skillset more than just strength and cunning. As such, she really wasn’t any better or worse than any of the others playing around them, she just had a lot more power that she had to reign back to keep from throwing the shoes too far. Her second toss was a little closer, the seal having a better feel for the motion of it but still not enough to hook the pole right away.

Meanwhile, Mercury had grabbed an available surfboard and was out in the ocean with Vandrad, just past the waves and carefully observing the other surfers. She was slightly nervous about being in the ocean again, though she wasn’t sure why. Now that she knew how to swim the water should have been less daunting to her, but there was a small part of her that she was blatantly ignoring which was slightly intimidated by the endless pool and its murky depths. Still, this was relatively shallow water where they were, so it was at least easy to set aside for the time being.

And while Mercury was an exceptionally quick learner, it still took a few tries before she was able to stand up on the surfboard long enough to ride for a bit. Once she felt she had the hang of it, she wasted no time in throwing their names in for the competition that was about to go up, most than ready to at least give it a shot. As it came time for the lavender haired woman’s turn, she parked herself in an ideal spot and waited for an appropriately sized wave to swell before she started paddling to try and keep ahead of it. When she felt the board lock in to the push of the water, she hopped up onto her feet and stabilized herself, pleased with at least getting up into position. In fact, she managed to ride the wave at least halfway to shore before a small undercurrent tugged her off course, causing her to lose her balance with a small, comical yelp. When she emerged from the water, she was laughing in amusement at herself, genuinely having fun whether she won or lost.

Trudging her way back to shore, one of the attendants placed a lei around her shoulders and then she turned to watch Vandrad give it a go, eager to see how the prince would do.

There’s no fair or unfair in battle.
( There is only victory or in your case, defeat. )
Unwind in the Sunshine HdwqfS4H_o

Taking down arrogant people was a part of Vandrad’s speciality. He had, quite literally, been trained in the Bellum military to beat the pomposity of new recruits. Having pride in one’s ability was one thing, having an ego and using it to bring down others to bolster yourself was another thing entirely. And it was true, Vandrad had done exactly that to the other volleyball team, using his own strength to knock them down a peg. The difference once, the prince had gotten his moment to gloat and it had been in retaliation for their own comments. He didn’t take observations about his height or hairline or really anything about him seriously; he’d been the subject of scrutiny all of his life. Yet the reason he had made himself a living weapon was so that he could be the one to kick people out from their pedestals and bring them down to reality. Only difference the half-buried jocks got to experience was their lives continuing, whereas others of more notoriety would have already been vaporized by the prince’s power.

As he watched the group of men and women struggle to free themselves from the sand, Vandrad allowed his Empowerment to leave him, returning to his normal colors. With the grace of a master dancer, he pushed off the net he had so carefully landed upon and backflipped back to his side of the competitive space. Gren made a comment about the game coming to an end and, just as he did, an infestation of thirsty women practically materialized around him, hanging on his frame. The prince scoffed as his father attempted some means of escape, his eyes pleading as he looked about for some kind of safety line. "Come now, father; no joy over the idea of what seems to be quickly becoming a harem?” he asked the former Knight, smirking.

Before Gren could answer, two of the girls turned to look at Vandrad, perhaps offended by his remarks over their observed sluttiness. But rather than chastise him, their eyes seemed to glimmer with new discovery. “Oh my god, are you his son? You look just like him! Were you two chiseled out of stone?” one of the girls asked as she stepped forward, draping herself over his arm.

“Listen, we’re all for spending some time with daddy and son. I’m sure we can find some ways to… uh…” the other girl stopped, her brow knit in frustration as she tried to think of some kind of imagery.

“What she means to say is that there are certainly some things that should be shared between father and son…” the other girl interjected.

Vandrad sneered in annoyance at the two women, clearly unimpressed. Somehow Gren was able to wrangle himself Mythal and Victoria as a saving grace, exclaiming that they should go and play horseshoes. But that wasn’t before Mercury alerted the gaggle that they weren’t prepared for what Gren had in store, a comment that earned a grimace from Vandrad. Yet she proved his savior as well, insisting that he had ruined her fun and now it was time to teach her how to surf. Peeling himself away from the two women dismissively, he scoffed. "And what makes you think I know how to surf? I’ve barely spent any time in the ocean,” he complained as he walked after her.

As Gren offered the two horseshoes to Victoria, she remarked over the fact that Lux wasn’t present, taking the opportunity to take a shot at her brother while he was absent. Mythal snorted in amusement as the former Knight chuckled. The Seal of Conquest aligned herself with the metal rod and tossed her first shoe, sending it sailing over the target and plopping it in the sand past the rung. She took a moment to consider that before she tossed again, reacting to her miss by calculating how she needed to pull back on her strength. The second throw was better but not quite around the rung either. “Considerin’ it’s your first time, that’s pretty good,” Gren complimented her. “Afta you, Mythal.”

Much like Victoria, games like this weren’t exactly the Director’s forte. His first toss flew high and over the pole, landing next to the Seal’s first shoe. After frowning and considering the parameters of what he needed to alter, Mythal tossed his second. It bounced off the metal pole and landed on the ground next to it, closer but still not quite there. “Funny, I wasn’t half bad at the carnival games…” he muttered.

“Ah, these kinds of things take practice… and a certain skill set,” Gren remarked as he idly turned to look at the two of them. And then, with two even swings of his arm behind him, he sent his two horseshoes sailing over to the pole, wrapping the metal shoes swinging around the marker before sinking to the sand below. With a cheeky grin, he looked over at Victoria and gave a wink. Mythal grimaced a little. Gren had come back with rejuvenated energy, ever since the event in the graveyard. He’d been a bit mellow but each time after that, he seemed more energized and vibrant. If he didn’t know better, he’d say that his adoptive father had found a woman. But that seemed impossible.

In the ocean, Vandrad was sitting on the surfboard next to Mercury, casually sitting cross-legged on the floatation device in a manner that should have been impossible. All it took was a little manipulation of the ethernano in the water and he had practically perfect balance and, as he watched others surge in on the crashing waves, he imagined this pastime would be relatively easy. He even managed to stand up fairly quickly and without issue, doing his best not to smirk in absolute smugness. Of course, their combined ability to learn quickly caused Mercury to sign them up for one of the contests that was being held. Doing his best not to groan, he agreed to compete and waded out into the water. He decided to watch her first, taking in the sight of her standing on her board for most of the ride. But then the ocean moved against her and there she went, flopping over herself and crashing into the water. Vandrad cackled loudly, his amusement exploding over even as she emerged and laughed herself. Now it was time to show her how it was done.

Smirking, mostly to himself, he moved his board into place and waited until the water started to swell. A few arm paddles caught him into the surge and he jumped to his feet, balancing himself against the board and the water beneath. He could hear hoots and hollers from the beach from the audience as he came surfing in, looking like a pro. He was just about to turn to Mercury and flash her a mischievous grin when the unthinkable happened. An undercurrent cut off his path, throwing his balance completely off. He tried to counter the awkward positioning, hoping to fix the shift but all he did was make it worse. Back he went, disappearing into the water as his board shot into the air above him, airborne for a moment before splashing down into the water as well.

Well, that felt and probably looked ridiculous. Vandrad rolled his eyes under the water as he took in some of the water’s ethernano and planted himself on the sea bottom. As he pushed out a film of air to surround his form, granting him the ability to breath, he marched towards the shore. His hair was the first thing that could be seen, moving through the water like the fin of a shark. With each step more of him emerged, walking back to the beach with a very annoyed look. A woman ran up to him and draped a lei over his shoulders before leaning in to give him a kiss on the cheek. With another groan, he walked over to Mercury. "Satisfied?”

Conviction never shames nor condemns us.
It calls us back to who we truly are.
Serilda was just starting to think that maybe she should have gotten a refill of her drink while she had been up when, of all people, Lux came over with a newly filled glass for her. “Oh. Thank you, Lux, That was thoughtful of you.” Surprised but not ungrateful, she accepted the glass and placed it in her cup holder. For the most part the Lightbringer had been doing what he usually did during such gatherings, which was wander off and people watch, finding entertainment in the social habits of mortals. He had at least made it a point not to get into trouble lately, so for the most part neither Serilda nor Mythal made any attempts to discourage him and just let him do his thing.

As she ate, Lux plopped down in another chair next to her and surveyed the area, commenting on everyone’s whereabouts and the activities they were up to, which he thought strange. Serilda chuckled. “I can’t say I disagree with that. Though, I’m sure you guys have some customs of your own that we would find strange. If you tried to tell me that Victoria likes to spend her free time brewing alcohol out of the blood of her enemies and volunteering in night clubs as a dominatrix, I’d probably believe you.”

It was a remarkably crude joke for the typically uptight noblewoman, but at this point she was constantly surrounded by so many promiscuous people that even Serilda couldn’t stop herself from making such comments of her own from time to time. It was a reality that seemed to dawn on her shortly afterward, her nose wrinkling lightly in a mixture of annoyance and amusement. Finally, she shook her head and smirked. “I need to start spending less time with Mercury and Ruzatz, I think.”

Reaching over a bit, she held her plate up between them. “I know you don’t really have to eat, but since you have a more physical body now you should try one of these. They’re not bad.” With a small nod, Serilda indicated toward a small tart pastry on the side of the dish closest to him, which was filled with a pineapple and mango fruit puree. It was a small offering, but Lux had been taking steps to try and be more congenial lately, and his efforts seemed genuine. Serilda wasn’t entirely sure she was ready to drop her guard around him just yet, but she still did her part to return the small gestures here and there.

“Let’s not get into thoughtfulness, okay? I had a feeling you’d be out by the time I came back so I just… got you another one. It isn’t a big deal,” Lux was quick to deflect her appreciation for his efforts, the barest hints of a blush on his cheeks. With her drink offered, he simply put the holder in the sand for the others to come and grab as they wanted; he wasn’t a server and he wasn’t going to go around handing out drinks like one. He sat himself down and got comfortable as he took a quick look around to see what was going on. Mythal, his adoptive father and Victoria were playing with horse’s shoes and throwing them at a target, to which the older man seemed to be well trained in doing so. He even could catch the former Knight winking at his sister, which caused Lux’s stomach to flip. Vandrad and Mercury were paddling out onto the ocean on some kind of boards for one reason or another. As far as the Lightbringer was concerned, Serilda was the only one not being strange.

And she concurred with his thoughts, though she admitted that she imagined the Seals probably had their own customs that would be considered weird to the mortals. “I dunno, we mostly spend our time scoffing and judging others that aren’t as glorious as ourselves. Doesn’t seem strange or arrogant at all,” he remarked, taking a moment to take a shot at his brothers and sister, including himself. Serilda continued, stating that she would hardly be surprised if he told her that Victoria used her enemy’s blood for booze and then worked as a dominatrix in night clubs as a side job. Lux turned to look at her, face contorted in derision. “First off, drinking mortal blood? Gross. Even Vicki is above that. Maybe.” He hadn’t honestly considered that until that moment. “Second, she would only get caught in a night club if she had absolutely nothing better to do. For example, that uh… Christmas event thing. She was too busy drooling over bald and ashy woman there to not go with you guys. Hilarious really that she got all hot and bothered; we were supposed to be made to be better than that but it seems that imperfection slipped through the cracks.”

Of course, Lux wasn’t bothered at all with Serilda’s crassness. He just went along with it and didn’t even seem inclined to comment on it until she suddenly came to her own self-realization and remarked that she needed to spend less time with Mercury and Ruzatz. The Lightbringer guffawed loudly. “Ah, c’mon, talkin’ dirty every once in a while isn’t a bad thing. If you act all uptight and proper all your life, you wind up like Vicki and believe me, you do not want that future,” Lux informed the Field Marshall, jabbing a thumb in Victoria’s direction. “Besides, they seem to uh… make you happy or whatever. Isn’t that what matters in the end?”

With that bit said, Lux started to get himself comfortable when Serilda offered him some food from her plate. Glancing down at it and then at her, she explained that while she knew he didn’t need food, he should try some of the food now that he had an actual physical form. “Uh… sure,” he said slowly as he reached out and took the pastry. He regarded it for a few moments before he plopped the entire thing in his mouth. He chewed it awkwardly and loudly, looking a bit like a cat that had licked something it wasn’t expecting. Then after properly gnawing it into mush, he swallowed it. After a moment to process, he nodded. “Yeah… not bad.”
