Six Feet Apart, Please! (Percy/Leon) Ffjuec7

Sometimes things that fall apart are actually falling into place

"Breaking News: Bosco leads the world in most Boronavirus-19 cases! Over 50,000 dead and 350,000 infected, outbreaks now in Fiore!"

"Bovid-19: The virus that hit Ishgar by surprise and what to do about it just in a second. Larry, take it from here."

"Stores beginning to include social distancing in buildings and masks in company policy. Are they infringing on our rights?"

"The Dongxian Virus! Hoax or real?! More at eight!"

"Boronavirus: 5 things that should terrify you is hitting Fiore hard!"

"Symptoms include headaches, loss of sense of smell and taste, sore throat, fatigue, and..."

Leon turned off the television in the corner of the room after clicking through channel after channel, but only news about the Boronavirus ever seemed to show up. Even though his work kept him occupied, he tried to stay at least a little informed as to what was happening around him, but the quality of press and media coverage seemed more eager to get views through fear-mongering and wacky conspiracy theories than delivering accurate and helpful information. Lately, everyone's been clearing the shelves at grocery stores, and now everything is in high demand—especially cleaning products, food, and toilet paper of all things. Leon always tried to cook all of his meals before this, but now the mass hysteria had gotten so bad that ordering out was easier to deal with than hunting for ingredients.

"Tch... this kind of thing only scares people. Seriously..." Leon placed the remote down somewhere, an exasperated sigh leaving his mouth as the immense paranoia that consumed most channels right now. Still, he couldn't help but acknowledge that it all looked pretty serious... people were dying, after all. In any case, worrying about it didn't fix anything. He was taking a small break from assisting Percy, but all he ended up doing was organize and clean things in the messy lab that always seemed to return to chaos no matter how many times Leon uncluttered it.

When I went to Croger this morning, the place was totally empty... there's no way I'll be able to buy anything at this rate, Leon thought to himself about his dinner plans. Things were too crazy to ignore, so that was a bust. Television in the background as white noise wasn't working out either, and he was about to return to Percy in a moment, so Leon leaned against the wall with his iLac held out as he scrolled through YumHub. He was probably hungry too, right?

"Hey, Percy! You're hungry, right?" Leon started talking before he actually found his boss, knowing that his words would somehow reach him throughout the shared space as he called out into it. He navigated through the lab with an iLac in hand, scrolling through the varieties of cuisines YumHub had to display. Once he returned to where Percy was, he stopped to look at him with his usual steely stare. Sometimes he felt a little intrusive and out of line when he offered to do things like this. This guy probably ate pretty well with that body of his, right? Maybe offering to do takeout was a bad idea. Still, he had to at least get an answer. "I'm paying, so..."

That was a little weird, though. When he called out to Percy, there was a faint scratchiness in his voice. His throat was a little tender today... but not yesterday, or the day before that, and he didn't overuse his voice or anything.

    Strange.

Percy, who had been absorbed in his work, as usual, heard him before he arrived but didn't acknowledge until his presence couldn't be ignored. He pulled himself out of the circuit board he was soldering and blinked up at Leon from behind his heavy-duty goggles. "Huh?" he asked vacantly, though just seconds later his delayed brain processed the words. "Oh, uh...yeah. I'm hungry," he said as his stomach rumbled loudly as if frustrated at only just now being recognized. "A salad with grilled chicken with walnuts and chia seeds...maybe a chile-lime dressing," he said, not really knowing where Leon was ordering from. In his focused state of mind, he couldn't fathom that it was anywhere but the popular clean-eats place in town, which is where he always ordered on the days his home was without a cook. Leon's offer to pay was taken in stride since if there was one thing he was learning about his assistant, it was that the guy didn't like handouts very well. Despite the fact that letting the person in the room-- who would miss 3,000 jewel about as much as a stray coin so worthless that no one bothered to stop and pick it up-- pay was the no-brainer, Leon never seemed to see it that way. It didn't matter anymore, though. The rogue-faced man probably hadn't noticed, but Percy just added the sum back onto his paycheck.

Percy, who had always been a bit of a lab hermit, was even less likely to leave his home now that BOVID-19 was ravaging Ishgar. Any groceries, snacks, and any supplies needed were shipped in with no contact by Dagger personal shoppers. It was subtle, but there was an extra bit of anxiety held in the young man's shoulders, a general unease that only increased any time he heard about it on the news. In the rare instances where he'd had no choice but to leave his Rose Garden home, he wore his ridiculous looking but absolutely germ-proof face mask and stripped down to his underwear to leave the contaminated clothing outside for someone to fetch and clean. Most people were unaware, but Percy was a germaphobe. Most thought since he worked in the medical industry as well as technology that he'd be unphased by disease and illness-causing pathogens, but his medical expertise was more in the marrying of tech and medicine with the occasional life-saving surgery on injuries and undiseased physiological issues. He stayed very far away from working with anything contagious. Maybe it was that time when he was little where he'd caught a sinus infection 4 times in a row from every member of his family and was certain he'd never feel better again...

Leon was lucky he'd been too distracted to notice the scratchiness in his friend's voice. Percy wouldn't hesitate to go into lockdown panic, and it was only his knowledge of the human body that would keep him from spraying any sick person in the face with Pysol. With a sigh, he placed his tools down and set to using a different type of cleaner to rid his hands of the grease from working on the arm portion of some sort of cybernetic suit. And as usual, he missed the smears on his cheeks under his goggles, even as he slid the goggles back on his head like a hairband. "I didn't even realize it was lunchtime...or is it dinner time?" the youngest Dagger son asked, swiveling in his chair to stand and stretch. He'd been hunched over that table for hours now.

As awkward and easily flustered as Percy was, there was no denying that gift for science and technology of his. He was probably a nerd if Leon was going to really put a label on him, the kind that joined the robotics club in high school and thrived in all of the STEM subjects, but that's what drew him to the semi-redhead. He didn't understand half of the stuff he talked about, but he loved hearing him talk. How could someone not find it all interesting and cool? How could someone not be fond of his passion? It was so obvious that he enjoyed what he was doing, and the long hours he spent hunched over drawing boards, picking at gadgets and circuit boards told a million words. Not only that, he knew how it felt to have your passion and interests acknowledge and humored by others—Leon could recall times where his eldest brother, Henri, would ask about his interest in art and mechanical concepts and just let him talk until he was tired. It felt good, and honestly, kind of inflated your ego a little too. It was nice, but he also had his downsides too.

"That's oddly specific considering I didn't even pick a place yet, but 'kay," Leon chuckled without smiling. He could tell by the way he looked that he had completely lost himself in his work for the past few hours. It was like this every time he worked with him, and it really showed in funny ways. He never bothered to test it, but Leon was pretty sure that if he hadn't said something about eating, Percy probably wouldn't have thought about eating. He just seemed like that sort of guy, and it was even more convincing when he had droned on about the time of day. Seriously, how disconnected was this guy? "By the way, I've said this a million times now—clean up after yourself. I really don't know how you haven't killed yourself with all of your stuff lying around before all of this." Leon continued to flick through different local restaurants on YumHub until he found a place that happened to have exactly what Percy wanted, though he gave him a judgemental, tense glance as he did it. If there was anything that Leon persistently griped about, it was about this specific habit of Percy's. Despite his messy black hair, scarred face, and overall thuggish appearance, Leon was actually quite a well-kept and organized man. His cabin in the River Village was the epitome of organization, and his refrigerator was full of plastic containers labeled with categories and expiration dates. His clothes were always neatly folded, and yet his place didn't look so organized that it didn't look real. Percy, on the other hand... "You're gonna get a bad back by the time you're thirty if you keep hunching like that without breaks, too. God..."

At this point, Leon was just letting his grievances slip off his tongue, but he knew that Percy would end up being Percy, and the place would end up a mess, and Leon would be Leon and clean it up with mild satisfaction. It was probably in his job description, anyway.

"What were you working on? Mmhm...!" Leon fisted his hand and covered his mouth with it, attempting to clear his throat. He could feel the scratchiness tickle the back of it, but when his throat rumbled, it was completely dry. Man, maybe he was speaking too much. He finished tapping away at his iLac before finishing up the order by pressing that big red button on his screen and putting it away. Aside from the pay and the fun stuff he got to try, the best part of his job was poking and prodding Percy for his ideas.

Post by Percy 8th January 2021, 4:18 am

Space Cadet was slowly coming down out of his mind galaxy, indicated by the focus and sharpness returning to his eyes as he stared at Leon. "Oh," he muttered when the man said he hadn't even said the restaurant, which now that he thought about it, was too crucial a detail to assume. "Sorry," he said with a weak smile, reaching up to scratch the back of his head. Trying to do so caused a stiff twinge, so he began rolling his sore shoulders instead. He was used to his body feeling stiff and achy after a long day in the lab, but it didn't make it feel any better.

Leon began nagging him about his mindless habits again, to which he sighed in resignation and nodded. "I'll try to do better," he said for probably the millionth time in return, half-heartedly returning a few tools to their holders and cases. He didn't exactly get the whole table cleared before he lost interest and started rubbing his eyes instead. After adding an eyedrop to to his damaged eye. "It's hard to sit up straight and have the stability to work on intricate things, or get a good view..." he tried to defend himself, though in this case, both were right. Percy couldn't really have great posture and do most of what he did, but Leon was right that his back would stuffer. A smile crossed his lips as he thought of something. "Working men's' backs are supposed to hurt, right? Maybe someday I'll come home to someone who will rub it for me," he tittered at his own joke. It was a nice thought, but he hardly considered it to be in his cards.

Now that his dark-headed assistant had ordered the food and had taken a break from prodding his idiosyncrasies, he was curious about the project he was working on. The issue was... Leon made a noise. Percy leaned away a little, mismatched eyes appraising him with mild alarm. Squinting, Percy proceeded with his explanation of his work, since he loved explaining it to Leon just about as much as Leon liked hearing it. The scarred man was the only person to show that much interest in what he was doing since he was in school and his teachers thought they could take credit for his brains. Leon didn't have that ulterior motive. "It's the circuit board for a new cybernetic suit focused on speed," he answered, not explaining too much since Leon probably remembered that he'd been on a cybernetic suit kick lately. He'd already completed five others, focusing on various aspects of a fight. Each improved on the others, and even those were studies for something much bigger he had in mind.

Unable to contain his germaphobia, Percy blurted out the question that had been eating at the back of his mind. "Leon, are you feeling okay? Is your throat sore?" Surely he was just being paranoid. There was no way, after all his efforts to stay out of the public to avoid the dreaded BOVID, that it had just walked into his lab and infected everything. Right? Right?

"Yeah, maybe. But then you'd have to get out more to meet'em," Leon looked at Percy with steely eyes as he teased him, though in a brutally honest way. Before they started working together, the two would often cross paths so often that Leon began to coin Percy as his stalker. It seemed like the semi-redhead was always out and about, but what Leon quickly came to realize was that couldn't be further from the truth. Percy seemed to be in love with his work, and the only times he had seen Percy go out for social gatherings was when they reunited at the Singles Event, and when they went out together to the local Christmas festival. After that, he seemed glued to his lab bench. Leon found his work ethic admirable and interesting, but it was hard to imagine others feeling the same way.

With his arms folded over his chest, Leon eyed the circuit board that Percy was working on with interest. When he mentioned "cybernetic suit", that's when his interest really piqued. When Percy gave him access to the suits he had already made before or was in the process of improving, that's all Leon ever seemed to use. He was prepared for the battles he always seemed to stumble upon nowadays, and he felt more comfortable acting recklessly in between. He almost blew his arm off the last time he fought nakedly, but now it seemed like less and less of a hazard with Percy's genius covering his body from head to toe. Intrigued, Leon began to walk over to Percy's workspace with softer, more eager eyes until his boss had suddenly changed the subject to something that he originally thought hadn't been very noticeable—his sore throat.

"My throat? Well... uh... now that you mention it, it's been a little scratchy since this morning," Leon crossed his arms again, caught a little off-guard by the sudden inquiry, "but I feel fine."

While it was true that his scratchy throat was the last of his problems today, that didn't stop Leon from wondering how he got it in the first place. He took care of himself—stayed hydrated, cooked and ate healthy meals when he could, exercised every day, and dressed appropriately for the weather each time—and to top it all off, he didn't feel sick. The answer to where the scratchiness came from was a mystery, but it was probably allergies or something trivial like that. He couldn't explain every single thing that happens to human bodies. He wasn't a doctor or anything like that, after all.

"Anyway... you've been holed up in here all day. Why don't you come take a walk with me and stretch those legs? Or—uh—maybe go a few rounds? I've got a good feeling that I'll win today, y'know. Mmhm!" Leon pat his biceps a couple of times and began to quietly step towards Percy again, a fist over his mouth to ensure that all of his uncomfortable growlings was kept to himself. The sore throat wasn't a big deal, so there wasn't any good reason to keep talking about it. Besides, he enjoyed sparring and exercising with Percy—it sort of poured gasoline on the competitive spark he had in his soul. In any case, it was something to do while they waited for their delivery.

Percy was still all sorts of paranoid about that sore throat and his consistent clearing of it, but he was trying not to come off like a psycho. In fact, he chanted 'don't be a psycho' over and over in his head a few times, trying to talk himself down from his trigger happy bleach finger. Maybe it was just allergies. There'd been a lot of over paranoia out in the world, people getting punched for harmless coughing and sneezing related to allergens in the air. He said he felt fine. If he had boronavirus, he'd feel horrible, if not need to go to the hospital.

With a nervous exhale and shaky laugh, the half-and-half head would nod. "You've had that feeling a few times now. Never play poker," Percy teased, making a more serious attempt at stretching out his body. Once he was finished, he knocked his fists into one of those biceps Leon had been patting earlier. "Come on, let's go outside. I don't want to knock off all I worked on today," he said, moving past his friend and toward the door. As Leon repeatedly pointed out, his lab was far too cluttered to safely move around in when in a hurry, so horsing around would just...be a terrible idea. Besides, his assistant would love his mind if they had much more of a mess to clean up than the messes Percy usually made.

Once outside, the chilly winter air nipped at any exposed skin, invigorating him more than any caffeinated tea would. It had snowed a few days before, but the sun had melted most of it away. Most of the grass was visible once more, with only lines where the shoveled powder had built up and frozen leftover. However, the sun was no longer shining, and the thick gray clouds overhead and the crisp scent in the air foretold of another snow squall on the way, but they had plenty of time for a round or two before the flakes started. As usual, the tech nerd transformed into his more confident self with that cocky sideways grin appearing on his lips like it always did when they sparred. "Alright, come on, then. Try your luck, Leon," he said, getting into a defensive stance with his fists raised and feet planted lightly enough that he could move in a split second if he needed to.

Six Feet Apart, Please! (Percy/Leon) Ffjuec7

Sometimes things that fall apart are actually falling into place

Out of all the matches he and Percy had, Leon had never won a single one of them. Their match in Equal Grounds was the foundation of their relationship as a mentor and his mentee, and there was nowhere else to go but up from there. Leon began to hit harder and to hit hard where it hurt, his large and toned body felt much more nimble than it did back then, and he making more conscious decisions on when and where to be aggressive. But try as he may, Leon still never managed to snatch a win over Percy. Even when he got significantly close to a victory, all of their matches ended up in a nearly heartbreaking defeat for the dark-haired fighter.

Percy, on the other hand, was completely comfortable in his skin when his fists were raised and his body was braced. Each and every match they've had, he'd don this cocky smirk on his face, as if he were inviting a child to arm wrestle with him. Compared to how he usually was, Percy was like a different version of himself. He was just far more confident than usual—so much so that Leon often wondered why that didn't translate outside of their sparring matches. When he reunited with Percy back at that Singles event, there was a moment where the semi-redhead got caught up in his own head that he went on to explain some of his work in great detail. However, unlike their spars, he almost looked a little embarrassed when he caught himself. What did a guy as amazing as Percy Dagger have to be embarrassed about?

In any case, similar to his mentor, Leon rose his fists and bent his knees, though he wasn't planting his feet into the ground. He was preparing for his attack, and judging by the glint of focus in his eyes, it was imminent.

"Gonna wipe that smirk off your face!" Leon quipped back with a small grin of his own, and as he moved forward, the spar had finally started.

His first jab was quick and rough, stacked with all of that Leon-strength that made him such a promising fighter, and yet fast and lighter than it would've been in Equal Grounds. The fist was high up, aiming for Percy's face even though that was probably the one thing anyone would guard the most. What would he do? Would he block it? Maybe evade and counterattack? He'd probably go for his ribs, wouldn't he? Whichever the case, Leon was at least braced for it, his mind and body hanging on the delicate balance between strategy and instinct—something he had yet to refine.

It was a good start, as far as Leon was concerned. It was at least better than what it was before, and that was the point of their training. But... something was off. It was quick and light, and yet it took a bigger toll on his body than he expected—like he could feel the energy seep away from him faster than he anticipated. He stretched every time they did this, and he slept as well as he could've, so it didn't make any sense. Leon was a man of fitness and good health, so he could recognize it from even the smallest of movements—fatigue.

Post by Percy 18th January 2021, 10:46 pm

Testosterone pumped through Percy's veins with every elevated heartbeat. Few things got him going like a spar. It was one of the few reliable constants in his life that he'd always enjoyed. Some of his fondest childhood memories were sparring with Wallard and Artemis. Though he'd never admit it aloud, Wallard was more like a father to him than his actual father, so many adolescent issues were worked through in their countless spars. It was where everything he was as a person met action, and what came tumbling out was dealt with and what remained was better than the start. Progress felt good, especially when the wheels were spinning in mud in every other part of your life.

Eyes gleaming, Percy took in the taunt with his own condescending expression. "Oh yeah? Like I haven't heard that one before," he responded sharply, trying to provoke his opponent. His ego got the better of him sometimes. He knew there would be a day when Leon would deserve to win, and as a good teacher, he'd have to let it happen. However, Leon wasn't there yet, so for now he'd lord his skill and be what his mentee could aspire to be someday. At least, that was his plan. Percy had to admit that Leon was improving at a rather alarming rate, and it didn't help that he wasn't quite in the same shape that he was when he'd fought Leon the first time. His body was still haunted by the consequences of being inside Fairy Tail's guildhall when it was knocked down. He'd lost a little muscle mass just from how long it took to heal up. Going so long without working out had robbed him of his top strength, and even though he'd been working hard to build it back up, his leg was full of pins and rods that ached and his ribs were still tender. But, in true Dagger style, he'd not acknowledge these weaknesses and continue to act like he was on top of his game.

As the jab came for his face, Percy easily pivoted on one leg to move Leon's target out of the way. At the same time, one hand came up to push on top of the fist containing all of Leon's momentum, aiming that force abruptly at the ground. If he'd wanted, he probably could have gripped the wrist instead and flipped Leon flat on his back, but he was content with just knocking him off balance. As he then stepped into Leon's passing space, he gave him a hearty slap on the back, which probably wouldn't help the balance issue. "Mm, better, but I'm still smirking, I bet."

Six Feet Apart, Please! (Percy/Leon) Ffjuec7

Sometimes things that fall apart are actually falling into place

Whenever Leon sparred against Percy, it always felt like a battle against his own body. Like he could never do what we actually wanted to do, unable to distinguish whether he was frustrated at Percy for dodging or at himself for not landing a hit. Despite that, if Leon had any talent at all, it was his ability to pick up on things quickly. Compared to a lot of people, Leon was improving at significant rates, always showing up to the next spar better than before. But even so, here he was, aiming for Percy's head but ending up heading for the ground in what felt like a blink of an eye.

Leon regained his balance just before he lost it, but at the cost of his form and focus. Although being a quick learner was his strength, his patience was his weakness. The disappointment and anger of missing such a sure-shot got to him faster than it should, especially against Percy. The semi-redhead's taunts rattled Leon up so fast, and he always ended up getting even more fired up than how he started. The slap on the back just sealed the deal.

"You...!" Leon started but didn't finish, instead, he let his words fizzle out into yet another swing, and then another. He'd go for his face again, but this time let his other fist swing out wide towards his sides, hoping to catch him in any evasion he tried to make. It felt heavy. It felt sluggish. His joints ached and his eyes felt heavy. Normally, it'd take a lot more for Leon to feel this labored, but he was already beginning to feel his own bodyweight push against him when the fight had just started. At this rate, he'd exhaust himself. Seriously, what was up with him today?

Percy's smirk widened into a satisfied grin, enjoying how his taunts got the better of Leon. But then, in a twist of fate and probably some karma he deserved, Leon got the better of him. For a split second, Percy forgot about his weak spot. While he lifted an arm to block the shot at his head, he intended to tank through the rib shot as he had in their first fight. However, as the wild blow of pure frustration and impatient strength collided with his tender midsection, a powerful pang of pain stole his breath, or rather, had it all rushing out of him. "UGHN!" he groaned. Refilling his lungs with a sharp inhale, it felt like every muscle in his body lost strength at exactly the same time. Dropping his shoulder to curl his elbow toward the injury was all he could do at first, that and gasp and grunt. His focus broke as well, so he didn't even notice Leon's dip in physical performance. All he could think of was getting out of range of another shot while he tried to recover.

Staggering a few steps back, his arms curled around his ribs as if the heat and pressure from his arms would soothe the jolts of agony. They were no longer broken, but the tenderness persisted. The heavy structure beam that had struck him there nearly crumbled the bones there, just as his leg bones had been. Dropping to one knee, he took a moment to try and compose himself, but really only ended up angling his angry face up at Leon. It was rarely a good sign when Percy when serious and silent. Without warning he sprung, not to continue their boxing match, but in a thoughtless body tackle that would send them both tumbling to the ground in a mess of limbs. Just what he'd do if he managed to pin the larger man was unclear. Perhaps Percy didn't even know yet.

Six Feet Apart, Please! (Percy/Leon) Ffjuec7

Sometimes things that fall apart are actually falling into place

Leon was completely off his game today, every swing and step siphoning away chunks of his energy like a bloodsucking leech. As his patience began to thin, Percy's grin only seemed to stretch wider, knowing how easy it was to play with his student's temper and how satisfying it could be. He knew he was baiting him with those taunts, but it was harder to ignore them than it was to let his anger get better of him, so he always fell for it and lost shortly after. This time, however, things didn't end up like they usually would.

As his fist collided with Percy's tender sides, the semi-redhead staggered out of his form and knelt on the ground, his arms clutched over his ribs as he struggled to cope with the pulsating surges of pain. Leon stood his ground and maintained his sluggish form, looking down at his teacher with his marigold eyes widening fractionally. He was hoping to have dealt some damage, but the actual results were a little shocking. He was used to Percy dodging a lot of his strikes, and the ones that he chose to take, he took well.

Even with his teacher downed and vulnerable, Leon missed his opportunity to follow it up with anything as he continued to be lost in his speechless surprise. But when Percy glanced up at him with an angry look on his face, Leon flinched a bit. It wasn't often that he'd see him like this in their spars, if at all. The discomfort that washed over him almost felt instinctive, yet a lopsided smirk coming over his lips anyway. He looked like he didn't want to look him in the eye, honestly.

"Ha... haha... What happened, man?"  Leon taunted him with deep and scratchy laughter that almost felt delayed. He wasn't really expecting that hit to down the guy, after all, so it was only to be expected that his undertones were layered with disbelief. "If you wanna tap out, we can g—hey, hey, hey! Agh!!"

Thwump! Without warning, Percy threw himself into Leon, tackling him and sending them both crashing to the ground into a wild frenzy of squirming and wiggles. At this point, their boxing match was completely forgotten, and the sparring pair devolved into a clump of men wrestling on the ground, struggling for power over the other.

Leon persisted in pushing and pulling for about a minute before he could feel himself reach his limit. It was already hard enough trying to land a punch without tiring himself out, so this wrestle he had found himself in drained him faster than he could've imagined. Even so, he wasn't going to let Percy get the better of him.

"That's! Enough!" Leon groaned as a final burst of energy surged through him, ripping himself away from Percy's clutches to force him into his own. Both of his hands went for Percy's thin wrists, his tight grip pinning them to the ground above his head as secured his spot above him. His black hair dangling down from his head, shirt soiled in splotches of dirt and water from the wet grass, a layer of sweat caking his neck and running down his strong jawline, and a glaze of pink tinging his entire face as all of the blood rushed to his head in the midst of their tussle. Panting, Leon loomed over Percy in his forced straddle, breathlessly staring down at him as he held him in place. Even as his panting became milder and milder, he didn't say anything as he let his hands sink into his wrists, trapping him under his own body. Where had he seen this before?

    "Oof!"

Wrestling always looked questionable at best and considering these two's history, it was even more questionable than usual. The twinging in his ribs still robbed him of the strength he needed to get an edge on Leon, so in the end, his wrestling was pointless and he was being pinned roughly against the cold, damp ground. With a growl of displeasure, he struggled to get his wrists free. He brought his legs up and clenched them around Leon's waist, trying to twist his body and throw the dark-haired man's balance off for a last-ditch roll-and-pin. But no, Leon was too sturdy in this position. He wriggled for only a few seconds more before he seemed to finally accept it. When Leon said that was enough, he'd meant it. Nothing short of a crotch kick would get him out of this, and that was a dick move he wasn't willing to pull unless it was life or death. Percy's muscles relaxed and he laid beneath him, his chest heaving from the effort. Like Leon, his face was flushed and a little sweaty from all the activity, giving him the healthy glow of someone who had just worked out, except he was in an expensive black button-up that was now missing its top two buttons and was untucked from his grass-stained khaki pants. His normally perfectly combed head of half-red, half-white was mussed and wild, the white and red mixing haphazardly on the very top and against his forehead. This close to each other, each labored breath brought in the rugged sandalwood scent and the natural musk of the wolfish man looming above. Indeed, this was familiar, but unlike before, Percy wasn't drunk. No, he was high on testosterone instead, and in an even more precarious position.

After a pause for them both to get some of their air back in their lungs, the defiant Dagger spoke. "Now what?" Percy asked in an odd tone (huskiness probably sounded weird coming from him), his eyes intense, but not so much with anger now. It was an aggressive expression to be sure, one that was primal in some way. Challenging. Provoking. Interested. Excited.

Percy had this magnificent talent for turning his big, beautiful brain off at the oddest times, usually unintentionally. He prided himself on being a brawler who also used his brains, but occasionally he was all body and no mind when emotions got involved. At the moment, he seemed to give off the same vibe as at the tail end of the Single's event. Tension. His heart rate was rising for a different reason as Leon sunk his pressure into his wrists, and subconsciously his mismatched eyes flickered away from those marigolds to his angular jaw and mouth. This was the part where he'd said something about not being as fragile as fine china before, but for now, he was silent. The blush persisted on his cheeks and ears, like a beacon that Percy was shamelessly attracted to the man over him. Slow blinking eyes rose back to the golden ones, curious and questioning.

Six Feet Apart, Please! (Percy/Leon) Ffjuec7

Sometimes things that fall apart are actually falling into place

His hair was disheleved and his breaths were laborious. His usual crisp and clean attire was soiled and missing buttons, and the pleasant scent of his body filled the gap between them. With how close they were, Leon got a personal view of Percy's chaotic appearance, and he couldn't say a thing.

Memories of the Singles event flashed through his head as he gazed over the semi-redhead with narrow, piercing eyes. He remembered the way he looked and how eager he was to free himself of those handcuffs, the things he said and the way he said them—they played back in his head like a slideshow as he stared at him and the state he was in now. Even in such a defeated and compromising position, Percy persisted with his confidence, and Leon continued with his awe-stricken, steely expression. Despite how both of them had caught their breaths, it felt like his chest was still full of air. Every breath was long and deep, and yet Leon was never fully satisfied. It reminded him of how he felt during the end of their time together at the Singles event. His ears were beginning to glow and an eagerness to do something washed over him. Seeing Percy's hair in a mess and his face all flushed, but those stunning eyes challenging him still—Leon felt glued to him as he let himself get whisked away in the moment.

"You haven't tapped out yet, so..." Leon mumbled in between nasal breaths, his eyes fixed on Percy's face. He could hear the beat of his own heart steadily fill his ears as he leaned down, his marigolds matching the intensity of Percy's mismatched ones as his thumbs sunk further along his wrists. Seeing him at his mercy like this, vulnerable and yet so defiant—Leon let his face approach Percy's in a dazed captivation. Maybe he was responding to his provocative undertones and expression, or maybe...

    Bzzt! Bzzt!

Before Leon could continue what he was doing, the phone he had laid on the ground before their spar began to vibrate as a small notification popped up on the screen. An unknown number was calling him. He flinched and instantly released one of Percy's wrists in order to answer it.

"Hello? Oh... can you leave it at the door? Thanks. You too. Bye." Leon glanced back at the lab and began to get up from his straddle, turning his back to the downed Percy with his phone pressed against his ear. It was their YumHub driver, and as those calls usually went, the conversation was brief once he confirmed that the food had been delivered. Afterward, he turned back to Percy, offering his hand. "Food's here. Mmhm!"

With such an abrupt change of subject, Leon tried not to look at Percy too much. It wasn't just the fatigue and the scratchy throat that was off about him today—if not for that phone call, Leon would've... well, what would he have done? His ears began to glow again, though only a little brighter than his flushed face. What sort of face was he making when he leaned closer as he did? What would he have done if that tense atmosphere between them hadn't be interrupted? Why was he thinking about the Singles event, of all things?

Post by Percy 19th January 2021, 5:25 pm

When the phone buzzed and Leon stopped his face's descent to lean away and answer it, frustration crossed Percy's features. It was just a split second, but then his eyes widened. The moment's spell was broken. Wait. What were they doing? What was he doing?? What had he been about to let happen, or worse, wanted to let happen? As his senses returned to him and all that confidence retreated back to that primitive cave it crawled out of, Percy was left mortified. He turned into a tomato from the neck up.

Also avoiding looking too directly at Leon, the inventor hastily took the offered hand, stood, and released it. Back to running it would seem, but unlike his ungraceful, hurried, and humiliating exit from the Single's event, he was already home. He had nowhere to run and hide, so they'd just have to surf this awkward moment together... over lunch.

More troubling on many fronts was that gaze Leon had been giving him wasn't forced by some idiotic handcuff scenario. Percy was extremely inexperienced in this sort of thing, but it'd seemed he'd been about to kiss him. Which had been what part of him had wanted (yikes), but he'd been under the impression that he'd been the only one falling victim to hormones under duress before, which had been more than painful to navigate. Had he misunderstood? Did it matter if he had? Leon had kissed his cheek not too long ago as well, but that had been mistletoe...but he could have ignored it if he wanted.

Mind whirling with compounding conflictions, Percy didn't hesitate to turn his back to Leon and head back around to the front of the lab. Snatching up the bag of food, he continued inside and into the designated break corner. It was where the TV was earlier and was predictably the cleanest area in the lab thanks to Leon. He placed the bag on the table, dug his salad out, and flopped onto the couch. He didn't start eating right away, though. He added the dressing but ended up mindlessly mixing it in while he gnawed on the inside of his lip. It was so easy for the guy to slip into his thoughts and get lost, worrying about the implications of his new struggle on top of all the others. Sometimes it was exhausting...

Soon enough, though, with an inhale he actually speared some lettuce and chicken and crammed it into his mouth. Once he swallowed, it seemed he was ready to move on. "Uh...good fight. Finding an opponent's weaknesses is crucial," he complimented, choosing to ignore the fact that he'd lost his cool for a second over it. He'd spin it in a different way. "Also, you did well being flexible when the unexpected is thrown at you. You're, ah, improving very quickly!"

Six Feet Apart, Please! (Percy/Leon) Ffjuec7

Sometimes things that fall apart are actually falling into place

"Really? It looked like you were just pissed that I slugged you for once," Leon shuffled through the stacks of napkins in the bag before pulling out his burger wrapped in foil. He never really liked eating out since it was pretty unhealthy, but it wasn't like there was much of an option right now. Besides, he liked burgers. After he retrieved his food, Leon went ahead and sat down next to Percy on the couch, an arm's length of space between them. "Funny how you got real quiet when I knocked that smirk off your face, huh?"

Leon didn't look at Percy as he teased him, unwrapping his meal from the foil with a distracted look in his eyes. It looked as if the two had returned to their usual banter, but Leon couldn't stop thinking about how Percy looked earlier, pinned on the ground. The image was burned into his mind's eye, and even under completely different circumstances, familiar temptations threatened to swallow him as they did in the Singles event. That nearly primal desire for the man beneath him, the way captivation filled his eyes as if he were really was going to eat him, the most basic of personal boundaries being washed away in a wave of impulses, and worst of all, the vexation and guilt that panged over him whenever something had stopped him from doing what he knew he was about to do. It was just as Percy meant—it was an exercise part of their training, and yet, here Leon was, thinking these things... he was better off dismissing it altogether. It was just a training exercise, after all. He was probably the only one who was thinking of it beyond that.

"By the way, take a shower after you eat. You look like a mess," Leon continued, taking a large bite of his burger. In all fairness, he also looked like a mess. His hair was always wild-looking and unkempt, but his skin was caked in sweat and his shirt had moist spots of water still present. If anything, they both needed a shower.

The room still felt particularly awkward after what happened, but just as Leon bit into his lunch, something weird happened. He couldn't taste anything. And that wasn't just to say the flavors were mild and muted, but that he couldn't taste anything at all. Shocked, he pulled the burger away from his face and stared at it. It was all there—the meat cooked to medium-rare perfection, the lettuce, the cheddar, the strips of bacon, the tomatoes, pickles, and they generously slathered it all in sauce, but Leon couldn't taste any of it. Hastily, he took another bite and chewed until there was nothing left to chew, but even then, he tasted nothing. There's no way, right?

Leon's expression looked sick with apprehension as he slowly pulled out his phone and quietly opened up the browser. His thumb tapped away at the keyboard, and results for "Bovid 19 symptoms" filled the page. A lot of them looked particularly severe, but the more he looked, the further his heart sank into his stomach. Fatigue, sore throat, lost sense of taste and/or smell... it was all there, and reading it made Leon painfully self-conscious of his own body now. He didn't feel ill enough to be bedridden at the moment, but the small cringe on his face knew what was happening.

"Hey, uh... so... Percy? 'Member how you asked if I was feeling well, earlier? Well, ehm—I, uh—don't freak out, alright?" Leon's eyes crept away from the ceiling and onto Percy, his eyebrows twitching in mild panic, "Soo... I think I might've caught Bovid."

Post by Percy 19th January 2021, 9:17 pm

Ignoring Leon's continuing jabs in an effort to not lose his temper again, Percy only huffed through his nose and dug out some of the nuts and seeds in his salad. They always seemed to sink to the bottom, which was a shame. They tasted nice mixed in with the healthy leaves and grilled chicken

    "You what?!"

As was always Percy's first instinct, the initial alarm faded into skepticism. "Oh, you're just teasing me, right? Well, ha ha, good one," he rolled his eyes. However, the truth niggled at this brain. The clearing of his throat. He'd asked about it earlier, fearing BOVID. Leon could just be ribbing him about it, or...

Maybe it was better to be safe than sorry.

Putting his now half-eaten salad on the table, he angled toward his couch mate. Percy wasn't exactly the most nurturing of people, since he hadn't received much of that growing up to use as an example. For the majority of his life, his mother was as detached as she could get due to the loss of his stillborn brother. She'd never been quite right as far as he could remember, and the Dagger patriarch maintained his estate with chilled firmness and was rarely home. The closest example was Wallard, who was basically a male nanny, but also the head of all the other personal staff in the Dagger household. Many times had Wallard checked him for fever since Percy had been a rather sickly child. Almost without thinking, a concerned Percy reached out to push the dark, messy hair back from his friend's forehead, then stretched up to press his lips against Leon's forehead. The lips had the most sensitive sensation receptors in the whole body, which was why babies put everything in their mouths. This made them perfect for a quick temperature check.

Oh no, he was hot... It'd been enough time since their scuffle that he should have returned to a base temperature, but his face was still flushed and sweaty. This was bad!

If he'd had his can of Pysol, he definitely would have sprayed the man in the face, point-blank. So horrified was his expression that it looked as if he would leap out of his skin. He didn't need it anymore. it'd been touched by this infected person, and thus was compromised itself.

Now seemed like the best time for that shower. Abruptly standing and moving with urgency, Percy sprinted to the emergency shower station that was used when he spilled corrosive materials. His shirt was already off by the time he pulled the curtain closed, and in comedic speed, he washed himself as clean as he could get with the highest strength soap and emerged from the shower area in a literal hazmat suit. Germaphobe Perseus didn't mess around. He knew it could already be too late and he was infected too, but if he thought about that too hard, he'd freak out. And no, this wasn't even freak out levels yet. He would operate as if he wasn't infected and hope for the best.

"Into the house," he ordered, pointing to the lab door. "We're quarantined for at least two weeks. I have spare bedrooms." Yes, he seemed pissed. Pissed and on edge. And a little scared, for both himself and for Leon...and about trying to care for someone. He wasn't sure he knew how to do that, but surely there were guidelines online. At worst, he could call someone from the medical department, right?

Six Feet Apart, Please! (Percy/Leon) Ffjuec7

Sometimes things that fall apart are actually falling into place

Leon flinched at Percy's sudden outburst, his eyes rolling to the side to avoid looking at his friend's panic. It was was pointless to tell someone not to freak out when giving news like that, so it wasn't like Leon could get on his case about it. In fact, his confession was so shocking that for a moment, Percy believed that it was all some sort of sick joke. Leon just sat there with an uncomfortable frown on his face, unsure of what to say. He had to say something, didn't he? He couldn't have Percy continuing to think it was some harmless joke, after all.

"I'm not playing around, Per...cy? What are you..." Leon trailed off into a confused silence as he watched Percy lean forward, and he couldn't have braced himself for what happened next. Feeling the air graze against his face, Leon watched as Percy pushed his messy black hair up from his forehead as his face disappeared from his vision. He could feel his lips press against his forehead, and how much cooler they were compared to how hot his body was right now. All Leon could stare at was Percy's neck and chest as he leaned over him, his heart beating like a drum and his cheeks beginning to glow. What was happening? What was Percy doing? Was he kissing him? No, he was just taking his temperature, right? But even then, it was a bad idea—he was sick, after all. His first thought was to rip his face away from his lips and scold him for getting so close, knowing he was ill, and yet all he could do was stare at the body that loomed over him in one breathtaking image. Leon didn't move a muscle and held his breath, his heartbeat pounding against his ears and echoing in his head as he froze up on the couch.

Before Leon had to suffer through his confusion and shock a moment longer, Percy abruptly stood up and hastily made way for his shower with an air of urgency, leaving Leon on the couch with this wide-eyed stare. He didn't say a word as he watched him walk off, and once he heard the curtains slide against the metal rods they hung from, the dark-haired man immediately placed a hand over his forehead where Percy's lips had been. His face was even more flushed than before.

As he heard the water pour down from a distance, Leon continued to linger on the couch with his hand on his forehead. Honestly, he had seen Percy's half-naked body plenty of times, but now, it seemed like he was losing himself in the weirdest impulses. Back at the Singles event, he had to do a lot of embarrassing things just to get those stupid handcuffs off, but that was over now. There weren't any handcuffs and there weren't any of those impossibly sturdy balloons, and both of them were completely sober, so why was he getting so worked up over something like this?

But no sooner could Leon ponder his conflict did he heard heavy footsteps nearby. He perked up, removing his hand from his forehead and standing up from the couch with a glare on his face, ready to scold Percy the moment he came out.

"Hey, what the hell was that all about?! You can't go around getting so close to people if they're... what are you wearing...?" Leon paused as Percy emerged from the showering room, dressed head to toe in a hazmat suit and donning an almost irritated look on his face and tone. Leon just trailed off into visible confusion, squinting at his friend silently. Percy ordered him into the house, and Leon was a little hesitant at first. He hated being in people's debt, and he almost rejected him out of instinct. But Percy didn't look to be in a negotiable mood right now, and rightfully so—BOVID-19 was waltzing around with him all day, rubbing up against him in the grass, and sitting next to him on the couch as they ate their meal together. Who wouldn't be like this? Still, the hazmat suit was a surprising touch. "Two weeks? That's..." Leon hesitated, but then relented with an exasperated sigh, "Fine..."

    . . . . . .

Leon did as he was told and went into Percy's home after that. The frown on his face was telling of his obvious discomfort, but not because he was sick. Yeah, the news outlets made the whole thing sound like the bubonic plague, and the scary headlines didn't help with that hysteria, but Leon really wasn't all that concerned about the state of his health. In fact, he felt pretty okay right now. A little under the weather, but nothing that could make him bedridden. His discomfort was mostly from entering Percy's home for the first time, and it was just even worse after what had just happened.

When he stepped inside, the first thing he noticed was how clean and organized everything was—the complete opposite of his lab. The design was sleek, contemporary, and so uncluttered that or bordered minimalistic, too. It was much larger than his cabin in the River Village and had such a crisp appearance. It was honestly a little breathtaking as Leon glimpsed around in awe. It was annoying.

"So what, you keep your lab a mess just to mess with me, or something?" Leon shot one of his judgemental, beastly glares at Percy, his arms crossed over his chest as he assessed his well-kept home. It didn't look like he owned a lot a stuff, or rather, it didn't really looked like someone lived here at all. It felt desolate.

Post by Percy 20th January 2021, 3:58 am

"I'm rarely in here. Not a lot of downtime. Besides, the maid comes once or twice a week," he said off-handedly, still seeming quite sour but at least a little soothed that Leon hadn't fought him on his orders. It was true that most of the house was devoid of his personal touches, and for a wealthy man, he didn't own a lot of stuff. Most of his funds went into magical research and equipment for the next big project in the lab. His other living expenses, while higher than the average person's due to the level of comfort he was accustomed to, were minimal considering how much jewel he made. The Dagger personal staff that he borrowed from the main estate were well paid out of his pocket and received a handsome bonus. "So no, I'm not messing with you. If you want proof, check my bedroom," he quipped, though he didn't mean right now. He'd prefer Leon keep his germs out of where he intended to sleep without the hazmat suit.

Okay, so he had the sick man in his home. Now what? How did one care for someone who was sick? He thought back on his personal experiences and what Wallard had done when he caught a cold or had that horrible sinus infection. Awkwardly pausing n some sort of thinking process, Percy stared at Leon for a long moment, planning his course of action. At the moment, his patient seemed to feel decent, which meant he could stay on the couch where the TV was. Supplies? Box of tissues, small trash can, cough drops, glass of water, blanket, cold compress, and fever-reducing pills should he need them. "Sit on the couch," he ordered again, turning to fetch all the things he'd just thought of from their various places around the house. "Uh, please," he added, realizing he'd sounded a little harsh. Sure, he wasn't happy about the very thing he'd feared and been careful to avoid being brought to him by someone he'd trusted, but it was what it was. No use being rude. Now they would just deal with it.

The room he'd indicated was at the front of the house, to the left of the front door. Two sides of the room were completely covered floor to ceiling with windows, a third wall served to hold the large TV and shelves for DVDs, books, and a few small figurines from his favorite animated shows. Opposite of the TV was a sleek black couch made from expensive faux-leather (meaning it was both beautiful and comfortable) on a fluffy white rug, otherwise, the dark wood floors might make guest's feet cold. In front of the couch was a simple glass table, and overhead was an artistic chandelier that looked like a starburst. There was also recessed lighting behind the TV, in case dimmer mood-lighting was needed. The fourth wall that would have enclosed the room was missing, stretching the floorplan out into a spacious open concept. The kitchen was a stainless steel, gray, and white masterpiece. Depending on the angle, an activity room could also be seen behind the wall with the TV, where there was a pool table and some other non-electronic activities for parties...not that Percy ever had anyone over. However, the house was designed to accommodate anyway, just in case. Across from it was some minimalist stairs leading up to where three bedrooms and a study were situated. There were three full bathrooms, the master attached to Percy's room, another up across from the other rooms, and one downstairs behind the activity room. It was the smallest one, but still plenty nice.

It was pretty clear a professional had designed and lightly decorated to make it feel somewhat homey, while the white walls and black furniture color scheme that Percy had chosen basically shouted that he kept people at a distance. If not for the few figurines, personalized DVDs, and books, anyone could have lived here.

After a few trips back and forth, the makeshift mother hen had collected all the necessities he could think of. Navigating in the bulky suit was already grating on his frayed nerves, and more than once had he bumped into something as he rushed around, but he managed to line up all the things on the coffee table and at Leon's disposal. Last was the cold, damp cloth, which he was waiting to put on that feverish forehead his lips had grazed. "Get comfortable. You should probably lay back so this doesn't slide off."

From the worried look on his face, it was clear that Percy was stressing out over Leon's fate. People had been dying from this stuff. What if he did something wrong? They may have only known each other a couple of months, but he hadn't spent so much consistent time with another human being outside of his family since Dagda, and Dagda was busy being a guild master these days. He was used to Leon's presence now. The nagging about his cleaning habits, relying on him for some of the mechanical work on his projects, even his tendency to interrupt Percy's work to either ask about what he was doing or encourage him to get up and eat. Sparring was something he looked forward to since it served as the only physical contact he had with other people. It was the best way he knew how to interact with anyone. It was a bit of an overreaction, but thinking about how all of that could stop because of this virus had the poor guy spiraling already.

Six Feet Apart, Please! (Percy/Leon) Ffjuec7

Sometimes things that fall apart are actually falling into place

Percy looked and acted on-edge. He was short and commanding with him all of a sudden, and the expressions he made seemed stricken with apprehension. When he came into work today, Leon would have never imagined that he'd end up staying in Percy's home for two weeks or more, but it wasn't like anyone was waiting for him at home. Honestly, he probably shouldn't even be here. He should've gone home and self-quarantined by himself since he was used to dealing with illness by himself anyway. The Hoffmans weren't particularly nurturing of Leon in both sickness and health, so he ended up always making his own food, dressing and cleaning himself, staying on top of his medications, and wetting his own towels whenever he came down with something—even when it was so bad that he felt as if he would faint. To most people, that sort of neglect was cruel and inhumane, but looking back on it, Leon couldn't condemn them. After all, he was unusually adept at taking care of himself and others now, even at his weakest. So, if anything, he was grateful for that abandonment. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, right?

Still, the boronavirus was so new to the world that it was deadly in the fact that there wasn't a vaccine for it, and known treatment wasn't always reliable. It was hard to not think about the consequences of catching it, because they may be fatal if he wasn't careful about it. The more it settled in his mind, the more Leon began to regret not going home when he realized what had happened. He should've rejected Percy's demands and left until he recovered. He could take care of himself, after all. Yet, knowing this, Leon always seemed to relent to Percy's demands. He'd get all angry and then, once the semi-redhead told him to do this and that, it'd fizzle back into his chest and replace it with a mild warmth. It was selfish of him to stay, but... it felt really nice—being taken care of. Seeing someone other than himself scramble around for everything one needs during their time of sickness just felt really... nice.

"I hear that it's just like a cold, so quit it with the faces. It'll get all wrinkled by the time you're thirty," Leon teased him with his usual intense face, leaning forward from the couch all of a sudden. It all happened so fast, so he didn't find the right time to clean himself, and so he ended up stuck in a sweaty, wet shirt from their spar. Now that he thought about it, the two didn't even get to finish their meal together, let alone finish the work today. He didn't have any spare clothes here (why would he?), and he seriously doubted that anything Percy wore could fit him. These were the kinds of problems one should expect to have when making decisions on a whim, after all.

Leon rolled his shirt off of his body and placed it on his lap, revealing the torso and the nasty scars that covered it. The small burn marks around his nipple, and the strip of blisters around his waist, along with some other smaller cuts that never faded away. After that, he carefully took the damp towel away from Percy's grasp and placed it on his forehead himself, leaning back so it would lay there. Even now, he didn't seem so willing to rely on his friend a bit more. Old habits die hard, as it goes. And, well... aside from the whole boronavirus thing, it was hard to keep a straight face after what had happened earlier.

"I know it's my fault, but you barely touched your food, earlier. I'll order something for you again," Leon stared at his lap, continuing to avoid looking at Percy too much, if only because of guilt and conflict. Even now, he continued to worry about the semi-redhead. Sometimes it felt like if he didn't say anything, Percy would be cooped up in his lab all day and eat only out of necessity. Leon glanced at him, "You need to have a proper meal, regardless of what's happening. Mmhm..!"

Post by Percy 20th January 2021, 4:20 pm

"I'm not making faces," Percy protested, clearly unable to see his own mug twisted into acute concern. Wrinkles were the least of his worries since the burn on the left side of his face would crease long before his age called for it. "Why would I need to worry about wrinkles anyway? As if this giant, ugly scar on my face isn't enough?" he quipped back, a little bit of his already dry humor sneaking back into his otherwise tightly wound body. Most times he didn't seem like it, but he was pretty self-conscious of the burn to his face. There was no choice but to accept it, but he did think it made him unattractive. Perhaps it was another reason he never made any effort to keep up with his playboy brother, or even his sister who had gotten a lot of attention. He was the ugly duckling of the whole bunch. Due to the secrecy of the Dagger's...other dealings... Percy had crafted a piece of technology that would disguise his appearance that worked much like the magical rings operatives received but actually worked on him. More than once had he used it to simply remove the damage to his face, eye, and hairline so he could gaze at what he could have looked like... what he should have looked like. He'd looked a lot like his brother only with softer eyes, rounder cheeks, and shorter hair. What would he be like now if his grandfather hadn't thrown his gauntlet back at him?

Making yet another face, Percy frowned, both realizing he'd forgotten a few things as well as getting annoyed that Leon was more worried about his unfinished salad. "No, it's fine. The salad was compromised. I'll eat when we have dinner," he said, though that opened a whole new can of worms. The Dagger didn't know how to cook. There were a few meals prepped in the fridge to hold him over between cook visits, but there was nothing in there befitting a sick person. Sick people needed chicken noodle soup. It couldn't be that hard, could it? If he could mix volatile chemicals together and synthesize fuels from complicated molecular recipes, surely he could make a simple soup.

However, more pressing was the clothing situation. "You shouldn't sit there shirtless..." he muttered, imagining the chill of the cool air inside the home against damp, hot skin would only worsen the chilling effect of the fever, which would surely spring at any moment. Undeterred by Leon's unwillingness to let Percy fuss over him, the half-and-half head leaned forward, his hazmat suit squeaking, and laid the blanket over his torso. "I'll go find you something."

Percy had the same thought about his clothing versus Leon's larger frame. Most of his things were tailored, so they definitely wouldn't have any wiggle room for this much of a difference. However, there were a couple items he could think of. In the many times he'd been in the hospital, cheap, oversized clothes had been required to fit over various casts and braces. He was pretty sure he still had those tucked away somewhere. Or maybe even one of his stretchy tank tops? The young man disappeared upstairs and returned with the articles and presented them to his guest. "Here, put one of these on."

Leon might as well get used to helicopter Percy. He and his alarming yellow suit weren't going away anytime soon, and it was sure to only get worse from here.

Six Feet Apart, Please! (Percy/Leon) Ffjuec7

Sometimes things that fall apart are actually falling into place

He and Percy got along well. Their relationship at first was very rocky and full of tension before reaching its peak at the Singles event, but after their outbursts, they both took to each other quite quickly. For the first time in a long time, Leon felt comfortable being with someone else. He didn't have to worry about his magical ineptitude, living up to his expectations, or how his scary face and intense personality could throw him off-guard. But as Percy joked about the scar on his own face, Leon stopped talking and stared at him thoughtfully.

For how much time they had spent together, Leon didn't really know Percy very well. He had always wondered about the scar on his face and his life as a Dagger, but after their meeting at the Singles event, he eventually pushed those curious thoughts to the back of his mind. Likewise, Leon had never shared any details about himself or his family, either. As time passed, they began to resurface.

"Hey," Leon began in his deep, bass-filled voice as he skeptically accepted the tank-top, sliding it onto his body with unexpected ease. It fit rather snugly considering it was Percy's, but it was probably the one-size-fits-all sort of tank-top that people had sometimes. After that, he placed the damp towel back onto his forehead and leaned into the couch with the blanket sprawled over his lap. "How'd you get it? Your scar..."

His marigold eyes watched Percy shuffle around in that silly-looking hazmat suit. Surely everyone would wear a hazmat suit if they had one and were faced with the same circumstances, but seeing it in action felt especially anal. Every time he looked at him, Leon wanted to laugh, but he could feel his body sink into the cushions as the fatigue finally caught up with him. It felt like a huge weight on his head and a heat that swallowed his body. The longer he slumped back into the couch, the closer he felt himself drift away into drowsiness.

As he asked the question, the young man paused. He wasn't used to talking about himself. The incident wasn't even discussed much in the Dagger household. It was just sorta... glazed over it. It happened, it wasn't a great moment, but it was a speck of dirt on the family tapestry that could never quite be washed out, so it was just looked over. Percy's natural distance from others was definitely something he learned from his family.

However, friends talked to each other, didn't they? It was an inevitable question. "Uhm," he started with a filler word, indicating he intended to answer but wasn't quite sure what to say yet. The hazmat suit limited his normal fidgets, so he just had to sit there, turned awkwardly so he could see the man on the couch through the little window in his hood, but then his mismatched eyes dropped to the couch cushion in front of him, where they'd stay. "I was showing one of my inventions to my grandfather," Percy answered truthfully, eyes growing distant. There was so much to unpack from that situation that he couldn't really explain. "It was a prototype for the pyro half of my gauntlets. He looked at it for a second, then flew into a rage, crushed it, and threw it at me. The special fuel sprayed out onto my face and head and then it sparked. Then... whoosh..." he motioned to the burn as if his fingers were flames. Normally he would have stopped there with his explanation, but the stress of the BOVID situation seemed to turn his mouth on like a faucet. More words gushed out of him. "I guess I was trying to impress him or show him that..." he trailed, seeming to lose the words. It felt too edgy to say what first came to mind, which was 'to show I had worth without magic'. A rye smile pulled the corners of his mouth. "I don't know, I guess that I could still be strong with what I could make to make up for not having magic. But to him, 'in power, you find strength' and power is magic, you know? He doesn't tolerate weakness in the family..."

And just like that, he realized that he'd opened the door and rushed to close it. He wasn't sure why, though. Leon knew he had insecurities, yet openly admitting the details of a moment that would forever shape his perception of his life felt like he'd stepped out into public nude. "S-Sorry, that was a bit heavy," he sighed, ducking his head in embarrassment.

Six Feet Apart, Please! (Percy/Leon) Ffjuec7

Sometimes things that fall apart are actually falling into place

Leon continued to lay back into the couch, watching Percy with drowsy attentiveness as the question dawned on him. Seeing him fall into that awkward pause made Leon suddenly regret asking him about it. In hindsight, maybe he pushed past a boundary he wasn't supposed to and ended up making Percy recall unpleasant things. Wordlessly, Leon turned his head to the side a little to face Percy a bit more, about to apologize for the question, until Percy followed up. What he said next was horrifying.

"What?" Leon suddenly perked up from his unusually relaxed and drowsy state, his eyes wide with exasperation and shock. No scars ever came from fond memories, but he wasn't expecting something this cruel and heartbreaking. Not all families were perfect, and everyone had their own fair share of baggage that they carried, but something about Percy's story struck deeply within Leon—the fact that someone like Percy Dagger could be mistreated like that—his patience vanished.

Leon whipped forward so abruptly that the towel slid off of his forehead and onto the blanket, rising to his feet in a sudden fit of anger. His calm and relaxed face contorted into a malicious, nasty glare, and his hands curled into shakey fists. Without thinking about it, his impulses got the better of him and he said the first thing that came to mind.

"If I ever meet your grandfather, I'm going to beat the shit out of him! What the fuck is wrong with—ugh...!" Leon winced as a sharp pain shot through his head. Standing up so suddenly made him conscious of the headache he now had, holding his forehead in his hand as he indignantly sat back down, glaring at Percy. "That douchebag doesn't know what the hell he's talking about. You're the smartest, strongest, and coolest guy I know! I'd like to see one person do the things you can do. Is he fucking blind?! Tch! This pisses me off!"

His leg bouncing, his face stuck in a nasty glare, his face flushed in pink as the blood rushed to it—at this point, Leon was just cursing to himself and he continued his tirade on Percy's behalf. He wished he could've met Percy earlier, so when this all happened, he knew where to find the piece of human garbage of a grandfather. The way Leon was fuming on the couch, arms crossed and his hair a mess, he looked like a bull with steam blowing out of his ears. Still, he managed to regain some modicum of composure as the thought continued to settle. He and Percy weren't really that different, now that he thought about it.

The story suddenly reminded him of his own facial scar, and how his grandfather gave it to him for the same reasons. Yet, when he thought about it, he didn't feel the rage that he was feeling for Percy. His leg stopped bouncing and the flush on his face paled a bit. The glare on his face softened into a vexed frown, and he was left swimming through his sea of conflict with a look of thought and listlessness in his eyes, like how Percy looked. Whenever he thought about his own feelings towards his family, it became muddled. He didn't get angry at what happened or feel betrayed or mistreated, just...  muddled.

"I don't care if he's family—your grandfather's a piece of trash. If anyone else gives you a hard time because of stupid stuff like that, tell me and I'll beat the shit out of them. Got it? Tch..." Leon continued to huff and puff, leaning back onto the couch again after placing the damp towel back onto his forehead. He never recalled Percy explicitly telling him that he didn't have magic, but he was able to put two-and-two together after working with him. He felt a sort of solidarity in it, being magicless together. It made him like him even more, but hearing him tell this story only made him remember his own self-esteem issues, and suddenly his rage reduced to a simmer. Leon closed his eyes and looked away, mumbling to himself. "Seriously, what's with that dickhead? You don't need magic to be strong, or else so many people are just destined to fail from the start..."

In Progress Re: Six Feet Apart, Please! (Percy/Leon)

Post by Percy 21st January 2021, 12:25 am

As much as Percy was worried about Leon, especially now that he was worked up, he couldn't help a shy smile and a short chuckle through his nose. His cheeks flushed over the taller man's apparently fond opinion of him, which was admittedly surprising and heartwarming. And a little embarrassing, since Percy wasn't used to being praised. How do you respond to that? He had no idea, but the fluttering in his chest was concerning. "Calm down, killer," he said, not wanting him to get too worked up. He was sick, after all. "I don't think he meant to burn me, though obviously, he did mean to throw my invention back at me. But he's old and pretty frail now, so I don't think it'd be satisfying."

Reaching down to pick up the poor tossed blanket to return to his lap, the scarred man contemplated what his furious friend said. Strongest, smartest, coolest, huh? If Leon had come up against the Mephistopheles Dagger from his childhood, or even his father or brother, he'd most likely rethink calling Percy the strongest. When his grandpa or father released their auras, he couldn't even stand and usually threw up. Given his social life and skills, or lack thereof, coolest hardly applied. Now smartest, at least that one Percy could accept. He wasn't a genius in all things. Far from it. But the few things he did excel in had propelled him to genius status in those areas, so that was something he could be cautiously proud of. Even that, though, wasn't enough to make him a fully successful Dagger... or get him this sort of praise. It felt...good.

Percy snorted a small laugh again as he peered over at the man stewing on the couch. Leon really did look like a raging bull about to gore the heck out of a red-suited bull-fighter. His aggressiveness was... something. It made him feel a certain way that he was trying desperately to ignore. Just like earlier when he'd been laying under him. Just like at the event. Like Leon was a piece of iron and Percy was an awkward, resistant magnet. His intensity was cute, among other things.

Now that his patient had calmed a little, Percy's face also sobered and his cheeks regained their natural color. "I don't know, Leon. As powerful as my family is..." his voice trailed off, unsure how to word it in a way that would be Dagger approved. The Daggers weren't as truly powerful and wealthy as they were because they could punch hard and made smart choices. They were ruthless, cunning, and so strong that no one dared incur their wrath. Even with Grandpa weakened, who could really stand up to the overbearing magical power of Lucarius Dagger, and now his brother Artemis after his contract with that horrifying demon?

Daggers always had to watch what they said. Image was everything. Act this way, look this way, speak this way, succeed this way. Percy didn't live up to that image, no matter how hard he tried. His father, though cold, could at least appreciate that he had plenty of non-magical skill and intelligence. Two out of the three. But it was that third that would always lead to disappointment.

"How did you get yours?" Percy asked suddenly, referring to the ones streaked across his left cheek, and honestly any of the other curious ones on his body. He'd just seen them again when Leon peeled off his shirt, but he remembered them best from that night. Was it weird to want to touch them?

Six Feet Apart, Please! (Percy/Leon) Ffjuec7

Sometimes things that fall apart are actually falling into place

"Shut up. Don't tell me to calm down—it just pisses me off more," Leon pouted, although legitimately still angry. Even if Percy's grandfather wasn't intending on hurting Percy like that, his suffering is what came from those avoidable actions. Leon always condemned that sort of behavior, but he just felt especially riled up knowing that it was Percy, of all people, who was victim to it. He deserved so much better. Through Leon's huffing and puffing and Percy's appeasing explanations, the conversation's subject suddenly shifted to the story behind Leon's scars.

Leon opened his eyes. He should've expected this question to come around eventually, especially now that he had asked Percy about his own. It was only fair. Still, for years, he had been left to deal with his feelings about his scars by himself without a single ear to listen to his conflict, so he took a moment of contemplation before looking at Percy. His anger suddenly fizzled away into that distant, thoughtful air that came over someone when they were thinking about something deep or troubling. He didn't look angry or melancholy, just uncertain of what he would say and how he would say it. How would his family describe it?

"...I'm a Bellish immigrant, one of the Hoffman children—or—well—was," Leon started, leaning into his hand with listlessness in his gaze as he stared at the ground, "My family raises us to be top-of-the-line servants to the bigshots of Bellum, and you know how Bellum is. They love their magic, and if you don't have it, what good are you, right? My family has the same values, so you can imagine how shitty it was to have me." Leon couldn't help but crack an indignant smile as he gave shape to his thoughts. His inner struggle between his most damaging internalizations and the things he wanted to believe about himself finally given verbal form, and hearing it come out of his mouth made the wounds that had slowly been closing over the last couple of months suddenly reopen. "The Hoffmans have raised state-of-the-art mages to fight people's wars and to hold their coats for generations. You prepare your whole life for the moment someone decides to buy you, and that happens when you turn eighteen. And, well, it was my turn to let my grandfather assess me, one year ago, and..." Leon flinched and began frowning again, his eyes squinted in a mild look of hurt and anger as his voice grew low. He chuckled wryly, and though there was a smirk on his face, no other part of him seemed chipper. "Ha... just... left me to rot here, all because my mana pool isn't as large as everyone else's... it's funny, right? Yeah. Real fucking funny."

At some point, the atmosphere grew painfully bitter. There was a moment where his attention shifted away from Percy, and his suppressed grievances just began to pour out of him. It wasn't like this was some decade-old event or some childhood memory that he was reminiscing. It only happened one year ago, and the anger and regret were still fresh. For a year, he had to tell himself that he'd prove them wrong and that they'd acknowledge his worth one way or another. He told himself this every day when he woke up in his terrible apartment, to go work his terrible shifts at his terrible jobs, so he could earn terrible wages just to rinse and repeat. If he couldn't convince himself that he wasn't really abandoned and that this was all just some grand test of his mental, emotional, and physical fortitude. He wrote it best at the Singles event—he had self-esteem issues, but that was the only time he had ever talked about it. Except now.

Leon fell into a vexed silence as he sat on his words, arms crossed over his chest as he glared at the ground. It hurt a lot more now that he was hearing it from his own mouth, but it was also a little... relieving. It was as if reality reeled him back in, and Leon realized the loaded backstory he just went on. Similar to Percy's self-conscious habits, Leon perked up and frowned, his expression tinged with a little guilt for dampening the mood he had worked to restore.

The truth was that he was in the middle of settling into his life here in Fiore. Dealing with all of this stress was rough, but the moment Percy took him under his wing and let him work alongside him, it was like a beam of light in the dark that surrounded him. Like a breath of fresh air among the riptides that threatened to pull Leon under. He'd forgotten about the burden of his troubles for a couple of months now, and it felt really nice. It still did.

Leon looked at Percy and gave him one of his rugged smirks, letting his head roll back as he stared. Even with the hazmat suit on, he felt so drawn to him, like a moth to a flame. But the flame was gentle, warm... and really disorganized. That flame gave him another chance.

"Living in Fiore isn't all bad. I get to work with you, after all," Leon stared at him fondly. As much as he gave him a hard time for his bad habits, the more he thought about the day he believed he would inevitably leave him for Bellum, the worse he felt. Maybe it was that stupid fever getting to his head now, but he wanted to see what other incredible things he'd create, and what sort of fun stuff he'd get to try. He liked eating his meals with him and sparring outside, or how he'd get frustrated when his inventions didn't turn out the way he wanted them to. They were such little things, and his stutter made his chest feel light. He definitely got pissed earlier when he slugged him, right? It was cute. He was cute.

But that was just the fever talking. Definitely the fever.
